Over blended brews I’ve learned friends were becoming parents, while others were launching businesses. In fact, it was over an iced latte I began my latest adventure: this one, as your new editor. Co ee really has become the backdrop for some of life’s greatest moments.

Whether it inspires you to switch up your usual ca eine fix, or you discover a new spot to sip your favourite brewed beverage, I hope these cups kickstart your exciting chapter. If you happen to see me there, mine’s a matcha latte. Hold the tiramisu. Enjoy the issue,

For me, they’re both things that I confidently concluded as a teenager were not for me. Blue cheese, smoked salmon and tiramisu were all added to that list at various stages of early adulthood. But, apart from the latter, I’ve grown to love them all. Call it my maturing tastebuds, but now sunset drinks are best served with ripe green olives, slivers of smoked salmon belong atop a breakfast bagel, and I’m the first to dive knife-first into the pungent end of a cheese board.

And few take their co ee more seriously than those in the capital. Thanks to a thriving bean scene, you’re never far from brilliant home-roasted blends, internationally-applauded gourmet brews or seriously extra surroundings for a decadent ca eine-spiked creation. Turn to page 15 to start adding Abu Dhabi’s greatest hits to your bucket list.

As for co ee, that’s become an essential part of my daily routine. Just ask Mark, the friendly face behind the café counter in our o ce block, who’s tasked each morning with making mine, and several hundred others, first hot drink of the day. But it’s much more than that.

This district in Old Dubai is packed with plenty of museums and spots for a culture vulture like me. At Al Shindagha Museum, there are four new exhibition pavilions I want to check out that showcase Dubai’s history and culture: the traditional pavilion themed rooms, showcasing the life on the land, a traditional food house, and a house of poetry.

Getting a real taste of summer with… Salt Regional pioneers of the culinary pop-up, Salt are at it again with temporary ‘Salt Island’ set up in Yas Mall. You won’t be able to get their elite selection of sliders, but you can scoop up servings of their brand-new coconut and mango ice cream. Pick it up in tubs to take home, or enjoy it on the go, fresh out of the soft serve machine. We’ve always had a soft spot for Salt’s famous UAE-softies.

So, most of my time in the salon is spent getting nail extensions. Although it’s been around for almost 20 years, and has eight branches across the UAE, this week was my first visit to Sisters Beauty Lounge, that recently opened a gorgeous new City Walk salon. As well as dreamy interiors, the friendly nail technician swiftly had my nails back in check, perfectly painted in my go-to peachy pink.

If you’re a regular reader of this feature, you’ll likely have seen me write about my bad habit – biting my nails – before.

With temperatures refusing to go below 40 degrees, I had to find indoor recreation for the weekend. This Saturday saw me at IMG theme park, which has a host of brilliant rides, ranging from tame to hair-raising but so much fun (I’m looking at you, Thor Thunderspin). I also had a field time in the haunted hotel, but the claw marks left on my arm by my friends should be warning enough for the fainthearted.

It is a certified fact that the best beaches in the UAE can be found on Saadiyat Island. Generally I’m more of a pool girl, but offer me crystal clear waters and pure white sand and I’m willing to make an exception. I spent a relaxing weekend at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and couldn’t have been more grateful for the chance to really switch off after what has turned out to be a (surprisingly) busy summer. If you get a chance to go, do it – it’s good for the soul.

What’s been your biggest achievement so far? It’s got to be taking this business from just me and my husband at zero subscribers to now 40 of us in the team. We’ve got an amazing office on The Palm, and a brilliant team of around 18 nationalities – some of which have flown across the world to work with us. What do you love about the UAE? I love that there’s always something going on; I love the spontaneity. I also love how the UAE is at the forefront of technology, and there’s an app for everything. What frustrates you about the UAE? The heat. It’s very difficult to be outside and film content when it’s 47 degrees Celsius.

What was the first car you ever drove?

Who are you, and what made you famous? I am known online as Supercar Blondie. I create content around cars, which is shared to over 80 million subscribers.

What is your favourite car you’ve ever driven? It was a Koenigsegg Agera RS from a Swedish Above: Testing out a McLaren Elva manufacturer. It’s so powerful that it makes you feel as though you shouldn’t even be in control of the car. They only made a few and if you wanted to buy one now, they can sell for $10 million.

What inspired you to make the move to Dubai? Fourteen years ago, my nowhusband got a job offer in a bank in Dubai, so we moved from Brisbane, Australia. I got a job as a radio host and working freelance in journalism until five years ago when I started Supercar Blondie.

I love to just come home, play with my dogs and see my friends. I’ve been in Dubai for so long now that I’ve built a brilliant network and whenever I’m not travelling, I love to just hang out with them.

Precise roasting is the first and very important step. Different origins’ beans need to be roasted to the standard profile of each – light, medium or dark. Once coffee is roasted, a cupping session should be done to find the notes and flavour of the roasted beans. Roasted coffee must be stored well for at least a week to de-gas before going to the espresso hooper. A good calibration plays a vital role to extract the perfect espresso shot. Time, temperature, volume and cream are all observed while extracting.Micro-texturing of the milk to a standard temperature (60°C to 65°C) adds air to the milk to get the silky foam. Passion – enjoy and love each cup you brew.

PRE-GIG PLAYLIST Get these tunes on as gettingyou’reready Starlight Flying Without Wings Uptown Girl You Raise Me Up Swear It Again

The tour began in June and will continue until February 2023, stopping in cities across the UK, Indonesia, Singapore, The Philippines, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Touring is special to Westlife as it gives the band a chance to reconnect with fans, see the world, and get creative. Nicky explains: “We’ve had a brilliant summer of touring, playing various stadiums across Ireland and the UK. We are always thinking about what’s next and right now that’s the rest of the tour and getting to countries we haven’t been able to for so long. Being on the road is always great for creativity so I’m sure we will be thinking about new music ideas for the near future.” Fans will get the chance to hear a host of the Irish megastars’ classic songs, but their favourite to play at the moment is the album’s lead single, Starlight: “It’s an anthemic, euphoric song and feels like a huge celebration –we absolutely love performing it live”. As one of the most revered boybands in the world, you wouldn’t be blamed for wondering if they have any sense of normalcy in their lives. When asked what a typical day is like in the world of Westlife, Nicky tells us that each of the band members has a varied routine. “I like to get up in the morning, get to the gym and spa and have a nice healthy breakfast. Then we would usually head into the stadiums around lunchtime, rehearse and do soundcheck, watch our kids running around and play football; then we will try and have a bit of down time for a couple of hours before going on stage.” After spending the majority of their lives performing on stage, the guys insist on having a special pre-show ritual: “No matter how big or small a show is, we will always make sure to have a huddle just before going on stage. It’s a great way for us to get in the zone and really take everything in.”

Westlife presents The Wild Dreams Tour, Etihad Arena, Yas Island, Thursday September 29. livenation.me Nicky Byrne

“We absolutely love performing live; there’s always a really special connection that our older songs like Flying Without Wings and You Raise Me Up have with our fans,” Nicky Byrne, one of the four members of Westlife, tells us. “We get so emotional every time we see our fans sing along with us and shine their phone lights in the air – nothing really beats that feeling.” In the build-up to the band’s upcoming Abu Dhabi performance, we caught up with Westlife to see how they’re feeling about returning to the UAE. “We can’t wait. Dubai in 2019 was a great show for us and the Middle East is somewhere we always enjoy coming back to,” says Nicky. Abu Dhabi will welcome Westlife to its Etihad Arena on September 29,With2022.a near-25-year career under their belts, Westlife’s meteoric success is a testament to their unwavering dedication to their fans. “The fans are why we love touring so much. Seeing big crowds together, singing, dancing, and having a great time is reason we do what we do,” Nicky explains. Having performed on stages around the world for more than two decades, one would assume that there can’t be much that still impresses them, but a recent sell-out performance at Wembley Stadium was a real ‘pinch me moment,’ he tells us. Westlife are currently on their Wild Dreams tour, a rescheduled version of their Stadiums in the Summer tour, which was due to take place in the summer of 2020. The band took the Covid-19 pandemic as an opportunity to write new music, and Wild Dreams – Westlife’s 18th studio album – was released at the end of 2021. “Writing and recording our new album was a very different process for us. It was in the middle of the pandemic, and we were able to get really involved in the process and work with writers and producers from all over the world whilst sat at home. We are really proud of it,” Nicky shares.

o you put the lane (thosebuddiesthings that stop gutter balls) up, yes or no? Look, we won’t judge. The most important thing about any recreational activity that doesn’t have a podium, is that everybody is having fun. And nothing says fun like getting beaten by a five-year-old that starts their run up from halfway down the alley, hurling the ball with two hands and watching them ricochet their way to a perfect strike. Game on.

REVIEW: MATÉ Argentinian flair makes its mark on Saadiyat...

Argentina,aRepresentingtruetasteofMatéisarecipeforsuccessinAbuDhabi.

The meal starts strong with starters arriving quick to the table, served piping hot. It’s difficult to choose which of the empanadas (Dhs35 per pc) are better, so we recommend you order both the beef and the cheese. The goldenbrown pasties are crunchy and fresh, with just the right amount of pastry. Aged cheddar, oregano and caramelised onion make up the meat-free option, while wagyu beef, raisins and olives fill the other. We also try the asado croquetas (Dhs65), which comes as four pieces. Gone within two bites, each one is beautifully flavourful and bursting with juicy, slow-cooked beef, lightly fried and topped with a creamy paprika sauce. They are like golden nuggets of goodness, and we’re seriously tempted to reorder. Mains include even more meat, although vegetarians have a couple of options to choose from, too. Under strong recommendation from our server, we opt for the costillas al asador (Dhs195 for a half portion, Dhs350 for a full portion).

Essentially, it’s short ribs slow cooked on the open fire, which should mean for very tender meat. However, after fighting through thick slabs of fat, the meat we did try had nearly all of the moisture sucked from it, making for a soft but less than enjoyable texture. The entrańa (Dhs175) was a better choice – wagyu inside skirt with a marbling score of six. Served perfectly pink in the middle with a roasted half-garlic on the side, we’d sooner recommend this cut for steak fans. A selection of traditional desserts is available, but for us, the winner was torta balcarce (Dhs70). The sublime combination of dulce de leche, meringue, caramelised walnuts and coconut ice cream ticks all the boxes when it comes to a sweet dish. The right amount of creamy, crunchy and sweet makes it an ideal way to finish the meal. Maté, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, Sadiyaat Island, Abu Dhabi, daily 5pm to 1.30am. Tel: (0)54 581 @parkhyattad2576.

A rgentinian cuisine is somewhat under-served in Abu Dhabi, with few venues delivering the level of South American flair we pine for on a Saturday night. That was until Maté opened its doors in Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi. The Saadiyat spot offers guests a large space to enjoy authentic dishes from Argentina, fused with a Lebanese twist. Split over two floors, the upper level is home to a lounge area and bar with a huge wine cellar, while downstairs, guests are greeted with an open wood fire kitchen blazing away and tables sat under prints of Argentinian public figures.

REVIEW: Is it style over substance at Al Qana’s newest offering? editerranean restaurants are popping up all over the capital, bringing baskets of still-warm bread drizzled with olive oil, menus of fresh seafood, earthy interiors and a soundtrack that if you close your eyes could sound like it’s heard over the sound of the lapping sea. The latest addition to that offering is Oii, which opened earlier this year in a wave of launches at waterfront destination, Al Qana. While there might be no sounds of the waves to backdrop dining at Oii, when the floor-to-ceiling windows can be opened during the winter months, diners benefit from a pretty waterside setting. Alas, it’s still summer so we quickly retreat indoors but not before a longing gaze at the wooden tables dotted across the terrace alongside potted plants and rattan lamps. Once inside, our disappointment on missing out on alfresco dining evaporates as we see how pretty the interiors are. White stone walls, olive trees in large ceramic pots, and seats in linen coloured suede create an environment that feels warm and relaxing. Our starters soon arrive, but Oii’s potato gnocchi (Dhs50) is the dish we like the least – despite each piece being soaked in a wild herb pesto, it’s too stodgy. The gambas pil pil (Dhs52) goes down much better, and a sizzling sauce of Calabrian chilli and garlic packs the perfect punch, so much so we mop up every last drizzle with the warm homemade focaccia. The peach caprese (Dhs60) wouldn’t have been our typical order, but comes highly recommended, so we give it a go. It’s the meal’s surprise hit: a peach cut in half and grilled is perfectly plated with neat drops of cucumber gazpacho and stracciatella creating the perfect balancing act between sweet and savoury. When we move onto mains there’s a hefty focus on Portuguese and Greek dishes. The frango com piri piri (Dhs95) arrives as a whole grilled baby chicken with neat pearls of cous cous. It’s tasty but a little drier than we would typically like, so we add a squeeze of lemon and drizzle of salsa verde and enjoy the flavour combination. From Oii’s dessert selection, don’t miss trying the clementine and almond cake (Dhs40), with a juicy, fruity sponge, zesty citrus caramel and whipped ricotta. Before we leave, we’re invited for a ceremonial plate smashing, something we’ve witnessed all the guests around us try before departing. We can’t refuse. It’s a fun way to end an experience that has taken us to Santorini. Oii, Al Qana, Al Maqta, 9.30am to 11pm daily. Tel: (0)2 628 @oiiabudhabi2983.

By Buddha Bar ensemble, certainly puts together a strong candidacy on paper. It sits right at the crowning tip of the pier’s promenade and we’ve heard they offer a pretty good selection of promotional specials. Ingress to the venue is made via a dedicated lift service, which already makes it feel a little more exclusive than your average soiree spot (if a tad lazy, it’s only one floor up). It is essentially an alfesco venue which, with the Al Raha riviera views, is an elemental part of its appeal – but during peak humid, face sweat, frizz season, it does pose an additional logistical challenge. They’ve met this conundrum head on with an armada of portable, camouflaged aircon units, whose combined choral hum is hidden well below the atmospheric ethnicelectro beats.

Light, perfectlyelegant, prepped and absolutely faultless in flavour, it turns out this lounge is also a pretty decent restaurant. Siddharta Lounge, Yas Bay, Yas Island, open daily 6pm to 2am. Tel: (0)50 601 @thetrilogybybuddhabar1194.

Head mixologist at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island Each W Lounge has its own identity and has surprises at every corner. No two W Lounges are the same which makes for a great conversation starter and inspiration for beverages. W Lounge’s signature drink is called “Rum’pkin”. It is spiced rum based with a homemade sweet pumpkin paste. We top it off with a blaster bubble pop and our secret ingredient. Working at one of the most iconic hotels in the world definitely has its perks. With so many events taking place from Formula One to UFC, I’ve been lucky enough to rub shoulders with some A-listers. I’d say the most memorable celebrities I’ve served are Rafael Nadal, Russel Peters and Dana White. The trick to getting served quickly at the bar? Honestly, just find a way to catch our eye, but don’t be obnoxious. Just flash a smile and be polite and we’ll get to you over the person yelling for attention. There is no drink I don’t like to make. I’m always trying something new and modifying all drinks. I always like to also make all the classics because they take me back to my old bartender days and makes me nostalgic.

A sia brunchSpiceAsia’sRoutehas been a popular choice for many a Dubai atopartyassolidifyingresident, itselftheultimatebrunchthanksitsstellarviews, winningmenuand a vibrant atmosphere – but can the Abu Dhabi branch match up to this level? In a quest to find out, we ventured over to Yas Bay on a Saturday afternoon at the fairly unique time of 2pm. The later start is appreciated, whether you’ve had a big night prior or just a busy morning, rushing to brunch for noon can sometimes be inconvenient. It’s summer, so the venue can definitely be forgiven for not managing to fill the space. However perhaps seating the few tables that are present around the DJ booth would have helped to enhance the atmosphere. A party brunch this is not, and despite the excellent selection of tunes, the decibels are too low to really build a Turningvibe.to the menu we get started with Asia Asia’s selection of signature dishes. Kicking off with sushi, we’re presented with a plate of maki, sashimi and nigiri, along with salmon carpaccio, beef tartare and tuna ceviche. The restaurant’s famous dim sum also arrives; every item offers one piece each, but you can reorder your favourites if you wish. When it comes to mains, guests can choose from a large selection of dishes, from miso black cod to wagyu striploin, robata duck breast and Thai red curry. A selection of Asian side dishes such as fried rice, broccolini and udon noodles can also be added. In lieu of the party atmosphere, we relax into our booth and make our way through the dishes. Highlights include the salmon carpaccio, served in a refreshing mango sauce; the sweet potato dim sum which oozes creamy, flavourful goodness; and the prime tenderloin steak served alongside a punchy shitake sauce. Feeling full, we complete the meal with chocolate matcha marquise. Despite not being able to taste any matcha, the soft moussey texture was a welcome ending to a big meal. The cocktail menu features crowdpleasers such as Aperol spritz, sangria rosé, watermelon martini and Asian negroni. Alternatively, spirits, wine and beer are also included in the house package. D ubai – the city of dreams. One that is packed with creativity and acts as a muse for many all over the world. One artist that fell under the spell of the city is visual artist, Zak Eazy. Originally from Lille, France, Zak works in digital marketing while creating digital artworks in his spare time, though he dreams of a day where he can focus solely on his art. An avid traveller, his artworks feature famous landmarks from his trips. These include the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Taj Mahal and London’s Big Ben. Eazy fell in love with Dubai in 2021, after being encouraged to visit by friends who are residents. This trip inspired him to create a Dubai series called City of Dreams. Zak’s creative influences include nature, architecture, travel and surrealism, and viewers can spot all of these reflected in his work. His first Dubai creation featured Burj Al Arab, with the iconic hotel tinged in pink and surrounded by flamingos in the Arabian Gulf. Another landmark he chose to showcase was the Dubai Frame, which divides old and new Dubai. For this piece, Eazy featured the architectural structure in the desert, juxtaposed with jumping dolphins and an ocean wave. “I really loved the story about the architecture of the Dubai Frame,” Zak told us. “Depending on which side you’re on, you can see either old or new Dubai – it’s a way to imagine theHisfuture.”most recent piece depicts Burj Khalifa. Reminiscing on his first trip to the top, Zak said: “The view of Dubai was just incredible”. When asked when he plans to return, Zak shared his dream of moving to Dubai in 2023. While that dream is still in the making, Zak aims to create more unique edits of Dubai and has set his eyes on Museum of the Future next. Dune 2 is set to detail the second half of Frank Herbert’s epic scifi novel with Denis Villeneuve returning to his seat in the director’s chair. SYNOPSIS

The UAE’s capital will reprise its role as the iconic backdrop of the desert planet Arrakis in Denis Villeneuve’s version of Frank Herbert’s best-selling story.

For Dune, shooting took place in July and August for the perfect look. However, the sequel will be filmed in the latter half of this year – a time of year that is significantly cooler – a welcome break for the film team and actors, we’re sure. Speaking of actors, as of now, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård and Javier Bardem are confirmed to take up their original roles. They will be joined by Lea Seydoux, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. It has not been confirmed if Jason Momoa and Oscar Isaac will be making comebacks. The film’s expected release date is November 2023.

On shooting in Abu Dhabi for Dune, Robbie McAree of Epic Films, which provided production services for Dune stated that the UAE has seen its share of Hollywood, Bollywood and independent movies who chose the country as a filming destination but having a film like Dune really raises the bar. He added that that the producers, upon seeing the location, fell in love with the UAE and the vast desert landscapes. The picturesque scenes that Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter boasts matched the director’s vision for planet Arrakis.

Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

CULTURE //

MOVIES FILMED IN THE UAE Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) We always knew the force was strong with Abu Dhabi, but did you know the planet of Jakku – where we first meet Rey, the central protagonist of the final Star Wars trilogy – is actually our very own Abu Dhabi? Or at least that’s where those scenes were filmed. The movie centres around Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, who must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace when a new threat to the galaxy rises. Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, so having your location immortalised as part of the saga is a pretty big deal. Abu Dhabi actually gets a name check in the movie too, during a conversation with companion Finn, Rey refers to a location called ‘Liwa Outpost’. Filmed at: Empty Quarter in Abu Dhabi

Five out of five sweaty palms for the stunts in this, the fourth Mission Impossible movie. Super-agent Ethan Hunt and his team take on another deadly mission to prove their innocence when they are framed for bombing the Kremlin. The sequence on Burj Khalifa is undoubtedly Cruise’s most famous stunt to date. It involves a start on the 123rd floor, a malfunctional suction glove, rappelling down the building and an almost-fall that requires his associates to clutch onto his foot as he hangs on for dear life. Gulp. Filmed at: Burj Khalifa, Dubai International Financial Centre and Deira Creek

6 Underground (2019)

Love them or hate them, Fast and Furious movies are a big deal at the box office. And the seventh installment of the franchise, Furious 7, takes some of its road rage out on the cinematic streets of our capital. In one of the most physics-defying scenes from a series known for playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) take a Lykan Hypersport car and jump between the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers. Twice. This movie was sadly Paul Walker’s last, as he tragically passed away during filming. Impressive CGI rendering was used to fill-in his final scenes to make for an emotional farewell.

When the location scouts were searching for a futuristic cityscape to set the third installment of this sci-fi reboot saga, Dubai must have stuck out immediately. Its architecture, fast cars, smart city credentials and Dubai Metro stations that look straight out of 3020 make it the perfect candidate for offering a glimpse of what’s to come. Filmed at: Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai International Financial Centre and Burj Khalifa

There’s some pretty simple box office arithmetic that goes into putting Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds together. You know you’re going to get epic cinematography backed up by frantic action scenes and sassy dialogue, delivered with trademark Reynolds panache, which neatly sums up this particular high energy, super fun Netflix movie. And a lot of it was filmed right here in Abu Dhabi. Filmed at: A total number of 24 locations including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Aldar’s headquarters, Etihad Towers, Arkan – Al Ain Cement Factory, Liwa desert, Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.

This sequel to the hugely popular 2001 movie starring Will Smith, didn’t hit quite as well with the critics, but it is absolutely watchable if you let yourself embrace the cheesiness of it all. As you might expect from a film that puts humanity on the brink of annihilation, there’s not a lot of happy imagery for planet Earth – Dubai’s big moment comes in the form of the Burj Khalifa being up-ended and used to shish kebab a section of London’s South Bank. Those aliens really did us dirty. Filmed at: Burj Khalifa

T o non-runners, picking up a jogging habit can seem incredibly daunting. But the benefits of running –improved mood, stronger muscles and a sharper mind – far outweigh the cons (shortness of breath and the odd bout of So,chafing).ifyou’re thinking about taking up running, Jonothan Dietz, PT and group class coach at The Bridge Lifestyle Hub is on the starting block ready to help. He’s leading the new Train to Run programme designed to help beginners reach their goals as a runner, with a range of drills, sprints and agility work to help set you on the right track. What happens during a Train to Run session?

Words: Laura Coughlin

The space and zone your mind goes into.

Can you introduce yourself?

The aim is to improve individuals’ running capabilities but at the same time create a community of runners that come together to train, compete and most importantly enjoy the journey of it all. And it’s ok to be a complete beginner? Absolutely. Our aim is to help every person that joins a session. They will improve no matter what level they’re at to begin with. For example, if there is a specific move that’s out of reach, we can tailor it by giving other options that are just as effective. It’s designed to teach everyone the skills needed to be a great runner. Are there are races that you recommend signing up for in Abu Dhabi? I’m new to Abu Dhabi, but I’ve heard about so many great runs that happen in the city. The ADNOC Abu Dhabi marathon in December would be a great place to start with optional courses from 5km, 10km to the full 42km.

I’m a certified personal trainer and group class coach at The Bridge Lifestyle Hub. I’m very passionate about leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle and following a good training regimen that involves all types of training from weightlifting, strength training, to running and cardio.

SPORT // NEWS

In each session, we focus on speed, stamina, agility, balance, strength and endurance. With a combination of all these points, a runner can see great improvements in their running performance.

It’s very therapeutic. I would also say the challenge that comes with it, because each time you run you can push a little harder to hit your desired goal.

56 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // LONDON

Some of our favourite Dubai hotspots have made their way to London. Elise Kerr sees how they fare up in the Big Smoke... AWAYHOMEFROM

e’re fortunate in Dubai to have imported many of the globe’s biggest names in hospitality. From Coya and Indochine to Nammos, Zuma and Nobu, the list goes on. In recent years though, we’ve seen more of our favourite homegrown concepts make their way overseas. La Cantine just opened in Mykonos, Gaia exported to Monaco, Opa is in St Tropez, and a handful of hotspots have chosen London as their home. But with 7,000 kilometres between them, can the sister outposts match up to their desert-based siblings?

W

DINING

Externally, Il Borro Tuscan Bistro in London couldn’t be more polar opposite than the one found in Dubai. In Dubai, Il Borro is located in Turtle Lagoon of Jumeirah Al Nassem; a ground floor trattoria with a large outdoor terrace that overlooks the turtles as the sun sets behind Burj Al Arab. In London, we’re presented with a twostorey terraced building on busy Berkeley Street in Mayfair. Inside, however, we’re thrown into familiarity as the interiors effortlessly convey the high-end warmth that Il Borro guests adore. Dubai is ingrained in the story of the London space, as our waiter immediately launches into the brand’s timeline with genuine enthusiasm. The menu is nearidentical to its original, which makes us wonder if the best-sellers are the same in both regions. We start with the pappa al pomodoro (approx. Dhs71), although it’s a little more rustic than we’d imagined. It’s hard to finish everything as we know we have a pasta course on the way. Choosing the tortelli con zucca e tartufo (approx. Dhs142), we tuck into al dente tortellini pieces filled with creamy pumpkin, topped with crispy pumpkin pieces and fresh truffle shavings. Next, we go for a filetto di branzino (approx. Dhs161). It’s a beautiful piece of delicate sea bass, with perfectly crispy skin and served on a vivid green bed of pea and mint puree. Our last stop is a light and fluffy tiramisu, which has just the right balance of cream and caffeine. ilborrotuscanbistro.co.uk and an oddly bright open kitchen at the back of the venue. It’s a weekday when we visit, and a glamourous four-piece jazz band are playing in the middle of the room, providing a retro supper club-style atmosphere. On weekends, we’re told the entertainment cranks up a notch with cabaret-style dancers. Those familiar with The Maine Land Brasserie in Dubai’s Business Bay will recognise many of the menu’s dishes, such as crispy fish tacos, slow cooked short rib, Maine lobster and a selection of steaks. We couldn’t resist the tacos (approx. Dhs90), one of our favourite dishes in the Dubai outposts, and they don’t disappoint here either. The lightly battered fish balances perfectly with the fresh pico de gallo and drizzle of sour cream. We also try the T-bone (approx. Dhs700). While grass-fed meat wouldn’t normally be our first choice, the meat is suitably tender and cooked to our medium rare request. The restaurant carries many similarities to its original, however the added element of entertainment seems to elevate this outpost from a great restaurant to an exclusive cabaret club. themainemayfair.com

The Maine Mayfair

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2022 57

One of the UAE’s finest homegrown concepts, The Maine, had no issues in making its mark in Mayfair. Proudly hosting some of the biggest names in fashion within the first four weeks, The Maine Mayfair earned its place as talk of the town in no time. The two-storey space, set within a historical townhouse in Hanover Square, has a casual yet cosy outdoor terrace on the ground level, but head downstairs and you’ll discover a sultry brasserie, lit only by the glow of some very glitzy chandeliers, small lamps on each of the luxe marble tables

The menu features more Brazilian dishes than the Dubai outpost, which focuses a little too much on sushi and not enough on samba for our liking. Taking advantage of the opportunity, we go full Carioca on the mains - but first, it’s a sushi starter. We try the samba London (approx. Dhs87), which somehow manages to pack in tuna, salmon, hamachi, avocado, asparagus and onion into one neat roll, topped with hishiho miso, crispy yuba and a yuzu dressing. Despite the mix of ingredients, the flavours blend well for a refreshing start to the meal.

58 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE

Having a mix of cuts to choose from is a dream for meat-lovers, so we were more than satisfied, mopping up the juices ‘til the end. sushisamba.com

A more unusual maki choice is the el topo roll (approx. Dhs73). We were intrigued by the fresh melted cheese, which sits atop salmon, jalapeño, shiso, and is finished with crispy shallots, spicy mayo and eel sauce. It divides the table due to the unusual textures and use of warmth in a typically cold dish. It’s worth trying, but we’re still trying to decide if we liked it or not.

While Palm Tower Dubai might not have been the originator of this iconic restaurant, it’s certainly made a name for itself in the last year. SushiSamba opened in London’s Heron Tower in 2012, followed by Covent Garden in 2018 and Dubai in 2021 (as well as an outpost in Las Vegas and a soon-to-open restaurant and beach club in Doha). The restaurant takes over the 38th and 39th floor of the skyscraper in Liverpool Street, with views of The Gherkin, The Shard and many more of London’s best-known landmarks – whether you’re dining next to the restaurant’s huge floor to ceiling windows, or its expansive outdoor terrace (home to SushiSamba’s famed orange-leaf tree).

For our main course, or ‘large plate’, we share a churrasco Rio grande (approx. Dhs248), which includes sliced rib-eye, chorizo and filet mignon all on one platter. Sadly, the kitchen was out of farofa (a traditional quinoa-like side dish), so we opted for rice, but it was also served with plenty of chimichurri and signature dipping sauces. The meat was well-seasoned and cooked so that it’s just pink in the middle.

SushiSamba Heron Tower

In any restaurant with a menu that features gyoza, we will be trying said gyoza, and SushiSamba is no exception. The only option is wagyu gyoza (approx. Dhs92), but that’s alright with us. We receive tightly packed little parcels, pinched at the sides to stop any juices escaping. Inside is an explosion of flavour, bursting with delicious beef, kabocha purée and sweet soy that effortlessly disappears in just one bite.

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2022 59 TRAVEL // LONDON

Al Mare is the hotel’s signature restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from its ground floor location. It’s an elegant space that feels stylish and premium, with white clothed tables set against quilted leather booths and soft furnishings in royal blue tones.

The morning presents a menu of classic breakfast dishes, along with a small buffet serving fruit, cold cuts and pastries. After 12pm, the a la carte menu offers modern Italian cuisine, with a focus on fresh seafood, working its way from crudo to pesce through a series of insalatas, homemade pastas and main courses.

The hotel is just a five-minute walk from Knightsbridge tube station, and if you keep walking, you’ll reach Hyde Park. Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace are also within walking distance, so anyone looking to stay in the thick of the city should definitely consider The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah. jumeirah.com

SLEEPING

The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah Jumeirah and Dubai go together like Burj Khalifa and selfies. The city is home to 12 Jumeirah properties (soon to be 13), with another in Abu Dhabi, so most of us are well accustomed to its level of hospitality. But we were a little apprehensive to see how the brand would translate in London’s upmarket area of Knightsbridge. The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah recently underwent a huge renovation, and now has a very luxe yet welcoming feel to it. The redesign focused around letting in much more natural light, creating big windows that overlook Cadogan Place Park. The hotel is home to a large indoor swimming pool, housed in its chic spa with luxurious day beds surrounded by sheer white curtains, which are perched on the mezzanine level under an arced window that floods the room with even more natural light. The rooms are well-designed and comfortable, finished in that signature Jumeirah style. We stay in a balcony room that has a small ledge just wide enough to stand on and enjoy the view of the park and across the top of London’s busy streets. The first thing that struck us was the size of the TV – pinned to the wall was a close-to-cinema size screen and on the other side of the room, a plush velvet L-shaped sofa. The second thing was the level of detail that had gone into making the experience personalised and special. We received leather key cards, emblazoned with our initials; monogrammed slippers in the softest material we’ve ever touched; and on the coffee table was a scrabble board complete with edible biscuit letters, spelled out with our names. Talk about a warm welcome.

60 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // OMAN

Dense fog, lush greenery, vast waterfalls, wild waves, seemingly endless desert, rolling dunes, winding wadis, Mars-like mountainscape, abandoned towns, bustling cities, countless camels, baby goats and a few donkeys – these are just a handful of things you will see in Oman when you experience it on four wheels. Exploring Oman’s natural wonders by car allows you to witness many of the country’s most underrated assets. So, armed with a full tank of fuel, our favourite snacks and essential road trip tunes, we hit the road fromTheDubai.journey begins with a six-hour drive to Alila Jabal Akhdar, where we check into a mountain view room, although realistically, as we’re 2,000 metres above Jabal Villa Master Bedroom

If you’ve ever considered a road trip through Oman, now is the perfect time sea level, we imagine every room has a mountain view. To reach the hotel you’ll need a 4x4, and our transport of choice is a Mini Cooper Countryman. The small but mighty vehicle is the perfect size, with plenty of space for luggage (and snacks) and has more than enough power and agility to get us across the diverse types of terrain we come across throughout the road trip. The resort is totally remote, and the stark silence is a welcome change from city life as we sip coffee on our balcony in the morning. With a breathtaking infinity pool that stretches into the mountainous view, the hotel’s location and facilities sell themselves. However, the superb dining options and faultless service are an additional bonus.

To find out more about Mini visit mini-dubai.com When it’s time for the next leg of our trip, a 7am departure is required. We’re headed to Alila’s second Oman-based resort, found close to Salalah in Hinu Bay. The ‘quick route’ cuts right through the middle of the country and takes us across almost 1,000km of completely untouched land. Empty desert fades into harsh dusty conditions, before slowly turning greener as we approach the coast. Oman’s annual monsoon season, called Khareef, runs until September, meaning for three months, thick cloud envelops the huge mountain that blocks the desert from the beach. As we approach it, we find our thermostat dropping from 45° Celsius to 25° Celsius in less than half an hour, and soon we’re passing through dense fog and mist with minimal visibility. The surroundings we can see, however, offer lush greenery and thick forest, clearly benefitting from the intense moisture. When we reach the coast, conditions are still overcast, and the ocean waves are thrashing aggressively against the beach rocks. After eight-and-a-half hours, we make it to Alila Hinu Bay and are welcomed with a refreshing hibiscus tea. The boutique property features both rooms and villas, and ours has a private pool, beach view and outdoor seating area. The interiors are gorgeous, featuring a modern, beachy design with chic furnishings and a part-alfresco bathroom.

■ Give yourself plenty of time at the border and make sure you have all your documents ready (including Oman car insurance)

■ Keep your eyes peeled for speed cameras – Oman has a 10kph buffer (unlike 20kph in most of the UAE)

TOP TIPS FOR THE ROAD below you. You can get a decent view throughout the morning (weather dependent), but the best time to arrive is at sunrise. Wadi Durbat is a popular spot to visit, with cascading waterfalls and boat rides around the lake, but unless you enjoy sharing your experience with hundreds of other tourists, we’d give this one a miss. Instead, drive to Dolphins Beach, given its name due to the high probability of watching wild dolphins happily bounce along the horizon. Even if you don’t manage to see them, you’ll enjoy a secluded patch of sand and calm waves, set beneath a picturesque mountain – many of Salalah’s beaches are rocky and overgrown, so this one is worth the trip. The drive along the coast road alone is truly magical, with natural beauty around each winding bend.

The hotel offers excursions, but we’re here for a solo adventure so we hop back in our trusty Countryman and head to Jabal Samhan. During Khareef season the clouds lay low, meaning when you’re on top of the mountain, the fluffy white pillows sit Dolphins Beach Alila Hinu Bay Pool Villa Jabal Samhan

On our final day, we make our way up the eastern coastline towards Muscat. While it’s not the most efficient route home, it’s certainly the most beautiful. The varying landscapes we come across are somewhat mindblowing, and unlike the busy one-lane drive down to Salalah, on the way back we rarely encounter other cars, giving us free reign to enjoy the mountains, desert and beachside roads to ourselves. We pass through many small towns throughout the journey, which show the reality of how many people in Oman live, built with all the necessities needed for a simple life. Villages next to the sea are stacked up with fishing boats, while many of the towns further into the desert have been abandoned, likely due to extreme weather conditions and lack of infrastructure.

Seeing an alternative side to Oman, away from luxe resorts and tourist attractions, gives us a new perspective of the country and a deeper understanding of its culture. While the view of mountains and beaches can be enjoyed from a hotel room, it’s venturing into the unknown and soaking up the surroundings that will imprint the experience in your memory forever.

■ Watch out for speed bumps, especially in small towns where they tend to blend into the road and are not always sign-posted

THE ROOM RATES

You have to make a conscious effort to not use the word ‘palatial’ when describing the property. It’s not easy, the definitive qualities are politely screaming the word at you from every direction. But it suffices to say that it is on a completely different level to any other hotel in Abu Dhabi, likely the whole of the UAE.

There’s a massive gym; two separate pool complexes on each hemispheric wing — one has what amounts to a water park complete with slides, kids’ club and lazy river; the other has a meandering stream, hot tub, swim-up bar and overwater hammocks; you can ride camels along the beach at dusk, play tennis or padel or beach volleyball, do yoga, have a bonfire brunch at a pool bar or just go for a meditative stroll through the gardens.
