A DATE!”

… I say confidently to plans I know I’ll never stick to. Not because I don’t want to. It usually applies to lovely opportunities to catch-up with friends, planning weddings, sharing important milestones, or long-distance friends with whom a get-together is long overdue. But as we all know, the menial day-to-days of life have a habit of getting in the way. Before we know it, months have passed since we set up that coffee date, or those sundowners got rescheduled, or the apologetic “rain check?” text is sent as the cinema gets postponed for a third time.

Even as I sit down to write this letter, I feel as though the traditionally sluggish January has gone by at record speed. We’ve blinked, and February is here. A month associated with romance, love, and quality time. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to transcend into a mushy letter where I part wisdom on you about love. I’m certainly not qualified in that field.

Instead, I lean on the words of a man you’ll also find in this issue, Kevin Hart, whose upcoming gig you can read all about on p27. A quote I read by the former Chief Island Officer of Yas Island reads “I don’t care how busy I am – I will always make time for what’s most important to me.” And if a man with a schedule like Hart’s can make time, it’s a pretty poor show if I can’t.

So, I’m using this issue, packed with 26 date nights from A to Z, as my inspiration to make plans and stick to them. Whether you tick them off with your significant other, your visitors from home, or that friend that never usually manages to stick to plans, I hope you do the same.

Enjoy the issue,

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES Charlie Sloth

We ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-have products, local brands they love. This month, we chat to DJ, entrepreneur, TV presenter and certified hype man, Charlie Sloth (@charliesloth). Having moved to Dubai in 2020 to launch his ongoing residency with Five Hotels and Resorts, the British personality shares his tips to making the most of UAE life.

The spot where I love to go to unwind is Souk Madinat Jumeirah. There are some great places to eat along the waterways, and there’s a peaceful and mystical energy about it. Then I like to have a little look around the shops and stalls for some local treats.

Indego by Vineet at Grovesnor House is one of the best Indian restaurants in the world. The food and the service are incredible and I could easily recommend the entire menu. I also love Taverna Greek. Their saganaki is a dish that will leave you wanting more. It’s a simple dish but the way it’s prepared, the love, attention to detail, the marmalade garnish – everything is wow.

My relationship with The Dubai Mall is a very special one. I know everyone in my favourite shops on a first-name basis and it’s always my first port of call when I land back in Dubai.

My favourite local brand is Ounass. I love the two-hour delivery service, and the selection of clothing and brands is second-to-none.

Hands down, my favourite place to stay is Five Jumeirah Village. I love the sky villas; the rooms are insane. For food, you need to look for Soul Street, it’s one of my favourite places to eat in the world. Make sure you try the crunchy gringos and the pad Thai.

COYA

This chic showstopper wasted no time establishing themselves as one of the most reliable brunch peddlers in the UAE. The kitchen’s South American influences show their stripes via sophisticated standouts like its zesty ceviche, slow-cooked beef ribs with miso and limo chilli and grilled tiger prawns. Save room for the three-dip churros alongside the much-celebrated Coya pisco sours.

Coya Abu Dhabi, Four Seasons, The Galleria, Al Maryah Island, Sat 12.30pm to 4pm, Dhs298 with soft drinks, Dhs438 with house drinks, Dhs588 with premium drinks. Tel: (0)2 306 7000. @coyaabudhabi

SIM SIM

Whoever said size doesn’t matter has clearly never visited Sim Sim’s mammoth Market Brunch at Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas. It’s so big that guests are given maps of the brunch layout to prevent diners from getting lost. Almost every cuisine on the planet has a home here with everything from Mexican to Italian stands, Indian tandoors, mezze, an enormous cheese station, and a huge grilling counter over the bridge. It’s organised chaos where drinks are topped up swiftly at tables and family fun ensues. Too full to move? Check out the hotel’s brunch and stay package from Dhs1,900 for two people. Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, Sat 1pm to 4pm, Dhs390 with soft drinks, Dhs515 with house drinks, Dhs615 with premium drinks. Tel: (0)2 697 0000. rotana.com

NAHAAM

If you’re brunching at Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, you’re probably already expecting the best. Nahaam continues to live up to the challenge, albeit with a brand-new British twist. The buffet now presents the best of Blighty, including bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, fish ‘n’ chip boxes, a top-quality carvery and much more. Expect Union Jack bunting overhead, live music throughout and a general Jubilee-style atmosphere every Saturday at the aptly named ‘Pardon My Brunch.’

LPM RESTAURANT & BAR

The anti-brunch, LPM offers an elegant yet leisurely Sunday soiree that puts its culinary expertise in the spotlight. Guests enjoy a selection of classy breakfast items (think, folded scrambled eggs and burrata and tomato toast), plus a choice of mains from grilled sirloin steak, sea bream with pistou and peppers and a mushroom risotto. Hot tip: Order the outrageously cheesy gratin dauphinoise as a side dish and finish off with the French toast with spiced ice cream.

The Galleria, Al Maryah Island, Sun noon to 4.30pm, Dhs375 with soft drinks, Dhs450 with cocktails and wine, Dhs575 with sparkling. Tel: (0)2 692 9600. @lpmabudhabi

OAK ROOM

At this spot from celebrity chef Tom Aikens, the very best roast dinners are served up within the elegant confines of the Abu Dhabi Edition. The Sunday roast features a range of sharing starters and desserts, bookending a roast fit for kings. Choose between roast beef, lamb, chicken or, for tables of four guests or more, there’s the signature beef Wellington. Plates are served with golden roasties, veggies, and huge Yorkshire puddings.

DAI PAI DONG

In our opinion, dim sum is one of the most delicious ways to brunch, and Dai Pai Dong is one of the best in town. Past the enormous dragon sculpture in Rosewood Abu Dhabi, you’ll find elite-tier prawn with truffle dumplings, beef short ribs, barbecue chicken puffs and killer crispy shrimp wontons, as well as Cantonese roasted duck rolls, non-halal sui mai, and a barbecue live station. Show up on a Sunday with an entourage and go slow – yum cha brunches are a marathon not a sprint. Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Sun noon to 6pm (three-hour slots), Dhs298 with soft drinks, Dhs428 with house drinks. Tel: (0)2 813 5588. @daipaidongad

ANNEX

Party like an animal at Annex Abu Dhabi every Saturday. The new rooftop brunch at the Abu Dhabi Edition places much emphasis on the unlimited multi-coloured bottled cocktails and deep house beats. Bites include Korean barbecue chicken wings, truffle beef sliders, and cheese and charcuterie boards. Look out for (or dodge, depending on your vibe) the face painter by the entrance, who’s eager to bring out the inner animal in you. Dress code is casual although animal prints are encouraged. The after-party continues from 5pm to 7pm with two-hours of free-flowing drinks for an extra Dhs150.

Abu Dhabi Edition, Sat 2pm to 5pm, Dhs245 with soft drinks, Dhs295 with house drinks, Dhs395 with bubbly. Tel: (056) 992 2305.

But in a smart move to prove that it offers more than just killer pizza slices, Antonia hosts a fabulous monthly Italian brunch… without a margherita in sight. If you’re looking for the ultimate mark of excellence for a restaurant in a great city, look no further than the Michelin Guide. Recently, Michelin announced its star selections for Abu Dhabi and three spots were awarded one Michelin star, including Hakkasan. No wonder then that its Friday Hakka night brunch is regarded as one of the best in town. Expect a curated menu of the brand’s signature bites, starting with the supreme Peking duck with caviar as well as a selection of Hakkasan’s most popular dim sum, salt and pepper squid and Jasmine tea-smoked wagyu beef ribs.

In 2022, actor, comedian, author, podcaster, entrepreneur and the scissors to Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rock’, Kevin Hart, added another professional title to his already farcically long CV, when he was appointed as ‘Chief Island Officer’ for Yas Island Abu Dhabi.

Hart was essentially an ambassador for the island, appearing in videos living his very best life across Yas’ collection of leisure attractions. So it’s fitting then, that his next Middle East comedy show will be right in the ‘hart’ of his ambassadorial feifdom, Etihad Arena on Yas Island. Live Nation is in charge of bringing the icon-tier standup back to the island, for the only Gulf date of his Reality Check tour. The gig will go down on Wednesday February 22 and tickets are on sale from Dhs499.

You’re probably familiar with his comic roles in Hollywood, movies such as Scary Movie 3, the 2017 Jumanji reboot franchise, Ride Along, Get Hard, as well as providing voice support in animated films such as DC League of Super-Pets, The Secret Life of Pets and Captain Underpants, or any one of the number of team-ups with The Rock.

You may recognise his contortive features and hilarious raconteur monologuing from his stratospheric stand-up career, Netflix specials and comedy albums, or from taunting pal Dwayne Johnson with TikTok skits, Rock-inspired fancy dress, and eyebrow-raising impressions.

He’s a regular on podcasts and comedy shows, he’s anchored awards ceremonies, provided MC support for global events, he’s modeled for

Macy’s, launched a vegetarian restaurant (Hart House) and fronted charity drives.

But regardless of where you know Kevin Hart from, it is practically impossible to see him as anything other than one of the comedic genre’s most precious international treasures. The Kevin Hart gig will be the last of an epic A-list comedian trilogy at Etihad Arena in Q1 of 2023, with two British acts, Jimmy Carr and Kevin Bridges having already warmed the boards in January.

KEVIN HART 28 FEBRUARY 2023 | WHATSON.AE
HART IS ESSENTIALLY AN AMBASSADOR FOR YAS ISLAND, APPEARING IN VIDEOS LIVING HIS VERY BEST LIFE ACROSS ITS COLLECTION OF LEISURE ATTRACTIONS.

Kevin Hart’s time as ‘Chief Island Officer’ for Yas looked like a pretty sweet gig. These are just some of the things he got up to over his ‘Hartifying’ tenure.

1. We saw him crying tears of happiness (see: terror) after getting on the world’s fastest roller coaster (Formula Rossa) in Ferrari World. Which, for all you stat-fans out there, hits speeds of 240kph and pulls an eye-watering (as Hart proved) 4.8Gs.

2. He really seemed to enjoy Yas Bay, too. The Ibizan beat beach hub of Cafe Del Mar in particular. It was here that he very generously offered to share some of his fragrant pre-worn swimwear, snorkels and towels with visiting guests.

3. The comedian also took on the dizzying heights of adventure hub Clymb, renaming the record-breaking climbing wall ‘Mount Kevinmanjaro’. There’s no video footage of him actually climbing it though, and no flag at the top so feel free to claim the mountain in your own name if you make it to the top.

4. At Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi he revealed his superpower is “adding a whole lotta Hart into every adventure”. Not the most conventional flex, but at the very least, bang on-brand. He also declared himself de facto leader of the Justice League and that his superhero name is ‘Hart Dude’. Well, we guess Ant-Man was already taken.

5. His last act as Chief Island Officer is to pass the torch. He’s currently promoting the role, which comes with a two-month contract worth $100,000 and includes some incredible benefits such as VIP entry to events and attractions. He’s billing it as the ‘World’s Best Job’, and you know what? It just might be.

99 SUSHI BAR AND RESTAURANT

Has this Michelin-approved spot earned its place?

Since 99 Sushi Bar and Restaurant was chosen as one of Michelin’s coveted one-star restaurants last year, the hype around it has doubled. A Japanese fine dining establishment with roots in the culinary crucible of Madrid; the Abu Dhabi outpost is located in Four Seasons Hotel on Al Maryah Island.

We’ve been invited on a tour of the 13-course Fuyu Tasting Menu (Dhs950 per couple), which takes a bisecting line straight through the restaurant’s signature creations. Thirteen courses, 13 engagements with cuisine and craft, and we hope 13 reasons why 99 Sushi delivers on its red hot reputation.

The voyage begins with a pair of chutoro (tuna belly) hosomaki pieces, but before tasting, we long-pour a lake of soy sauce. It’s invitingly chestnut-toned, and unsure about the protocol of drinking soy in Japanese restaurants, we lift the dish up and nervously check over our shoulder to see if anybody is watching. The brand’s culinary director, Chef Ruben Guerrero catches us in flagranti. He nods. Permission. We take a sip. There are fermented notes of caramel, of brandy and honey. It’s in this condimental detail, we

find reason number one. Plates are swapped and we’re confronted with dishes (and reasons) number two and three. Edamame, but not as we know it. Seared in Kobe beef fat, togarashi and truffle this simple legume ascends to an entirely new dimension. An augmented reality where finger-licking is practically unavoidable. There’s an oyster too, with yuzu pearl and foam. Wildly polar flavour and texture points that harmonise on the palate.

Reasons four and five arrive. Sake tiradito, a nikkei crudo salmon ensemble served with crispy skin and inky blots of truffle mayo and coriander oil. It is subtle, stubborn, and refreshing. The restaurant’s capumiso soup is a fusion dish with a nuclear core of miso, tofu, leek and truffle, and in terms of mouth experience – it’s an astounding achievement. Complex simplicity, a millefeuille of evolving flavour shades.

Next, there’s uni (sea urchin) tempura maki, fake nigiri (with wagyu tartar on potato croquette), toro flambé nigiri, carabinero nigiri, and foie and maguro zuke. Compound

‘reasons why’ cascading onto our busy tabletop. The fatty tuna nigiri features yamato spirit-grade cuts of otoro, the fake nigiri whilst a playful jeu-de-bouffe is deadly serious in culinary intent, and the artful plate of carabinero (prawn) alone is responsible for a Babellian library of taste tomes. The final savoury course is the robata wagyu skewers. Served on a box-shaped konro-style grill, with aromatic smoke plumes painting the tender beef above. It’s pure theatre, smoke and skewers, texture and tone, a cabaret of intense olfactory stimulation that results in a meat dish worthy of a standing ovation.

Our culinary cruise comes to an emotional end with an impossibly light Japanese souffle, served with caramel ice cream. Crafty themes and the intelligent pairing of flavour and form aesthetics to enhance the end result.

This menu is a masterwork. The restaurant is one of very few in the region that deliberately dares to do things differently, and manages to pull it all off with an immaculate record.

January saw What’s On take over Desert Islands Resort at Anantara Sir Bani Yas for a wild weekend of fun…

By now we’re sure you’re all well-aware, but just in case we have any newcomers in the crowd — the What’s On Lock In is a very special sort of staycation. This time around, we invited you to enjoy the luxury and exotic charms of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts. In addition to the fancy hotel, the brunch and afterparty, and our imported treats provided by the entertainment and grooming partners — our 100 guests were able to enjoy trips out into the island’s wilderness. Nature trails, bike rides, horse riding, wadi treks and safari tours breezing past some of the island’s 12,000 Jurassic Park-tier inhabitants (including cheetahs, giraffes and gazelles)

It all went down on January 14 and 15, and looking back, we can now say with full clarity

that this was one of the (if not ‘the’) best Lock-In’s to date. And for that, we’d like to thank our gorgeous gang of staycationers, the hotel team, and our partners, without whom a Lock In simply wouldn’t be a Lock In.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

ANNEX ANIMALS BRUNCH

Let loose at the city’s fiercest alfresco rooftop party

With temperatures in the capital reaching peak levels of beautifully cool, our next task is to cram in as many sizzling outdoor brunches as possible before things start to heat up again. The notoriously lively brunch at Annex Rooftop is the perfect place to start.

Stepping out onto the stunning toplevel terrace of the Abu Dhabi Edition’s trendy three-tier night spot, we rush straight to the edge to absorb its famous panoramic views in their full glory. Taking in the yachts of Al Bateen Marina, the city skyline and the blue Arabian Gulf, it’s a scene that never gets old, no matter how many times you see it.

Decked out with elegant white sofas, ample greenery and ultra-Instagrammable flowers, we appreciate how it manages to

embrace the wild and wonderful ‘Animals’ theme, without making anything overly tacky or garish. A face painter is on-hand to cover you with artistic depictions of tigers, butterflies, spiders and all your favourite jungle critters, and the matching leopard print shirts of the servers are super fun.

We’ve barely taken a seat when we are presented with an entire bathtub of colourful refreshments, all served in iconic Edition glass bottles. Different creative concoctions continue to appear on our table throughout the afternoon, and the entire experience is truly a lesson in what it means to ‘go big or go home’.

The food is plentiful, coming out in a constant

flow of two dishes at a time, and the staff couldn’t be more helpful or invested in ensuring we have a sensational time. Our favourites of the sharing-style nibbles include the cold cuts and cheeses, served with slabs of crusty bread, homemade pesto and juicy roasted tomatoes, and the exceptional mini beef sliders, that somehow disappear in seconds. Spanning nachos, skewers, chicken wings and bao buns, we’re taken on a tour of the world’s most popular bar bite staples, before finishing with a few dainty coconut tarts and light fruit-filled profiteroles. Admittedly, some of the pairings, such as the charcuterie board with edamame, are a bit unusual, but then again this isn’t meant to be a brunch for serious food connoisseurs.

Presenting an idyllic fusion of tasty bites, funky beverages, tribal beats from a live DJ and chilled, yet upbeat vibes, it’s the perfect place to gather with the gang, let off some steam, and welcome in 2023 in style.

The Abu Dhabi Edition, Al Bateen Marina. Sat 2pm to 5pm, Dhs295 with house drinks, Dhs395 with bubbly.

Last month, we gathered 50 friends of the What’s On brand for the first ‘What’s On the Menu?’ of 2023 at a new outpost of Abu Dhabi’s favourite Lebanese restaurant, Mosaic. And by every measure, it was a roaring success.

For the first time in ‘What’s On the Menu?’ history, we hosted our much-loved supper club in the morning, treating guests to a lavish breakfast spread that had even the most ambitious foodies loosening their belts. We allowed our guests a nice lie-in, before kicking off proceedings at 10am, with plenty of Lebanese tea and coffee, as well as freshly squeezed orange juice.

What was on the menu...

Our attendees tucked into a feast of Lebanese delights, including fresh bread with butter, honey and jam, labneh with mint, fatteh laban, hummus Beiruti, eggplant fatteh, fried chicken liver, fried halloumi cheese, lahm bi ajeen, falafel, manakish, Lebanese foul, mousabbaha, omelette, spinach fatayer and egg shakshuka. Desserts added a touch of sweetness with cheese kunafa and rice pudding.

The best part of my job is that I get to showcase my creativity and ideas in liquid form. Every drink we create is a story to tell, through various techniques and making sure it’s well-balanced.

The most creative cocktail I ever made was inspired by the local market of Marrakech, Morocco. The souk has so much to offer to the world, loaded with lots of local ingredients, you discover a way of life that hasn’t changed very much for centuries.

The best bar I’ve been to is Joseph Bar in Panjim Goa. It’s a very small old school local bar with great drinks, food and atmosphere. The vibe of the place is so upbeat and makes you want to return again and again.

My favourite ingredients to use? Spices and any locally sourced ingredients.

My cocktail menu is influenced by many things. The main source of inspiration are history, science and travelling.

The one drink I could never take off my current menu is called elixir of life. It’s made with raspberry, cranberry juice, sage, vanilla, citrus, and ginger beer – it’s so delicious.

BAR OF THE MONTH:

La Carnita, Yas Bay

It’s

The Yas Bay incarnation of La Carnita is a more grown-up, polished version of its Dubai sister, but don’t let its sophisticated facade fool you. It’s founded on the same set of shared principles. Authentic Latin flavours, an all-vibe soundtrack, fuego nights and... la pasión

We’d long heard rumors from multiple sources that La Carnita is ‘the’ latest hotspot for late night revelling in the capital. It makes sense, since opening just over a year ago, the entertainment gravitas of Yas Bay has pulled a significant number of casual and committed merry-makers away from their traditional haunts into this new orbit. And within these sorts of migratory patterns, there’s always at least one hub that ends up as the defacto ‘Studio 54’ of the displacement.

In our position as unofficial investigators of vibe in Abu Dhabi, we’ve parked ourselves in a breezy waterfront booth at the trendy Mexican cantina. The music is a brilliant blend of bass-heavy bangers, there’s an amber glow from the above-bar neon gothic arches.

We’ve strapped in for achiote chicken, carne asada and Mexican chorizo tacos

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

A thriving bar with plenty of flavour to see you through the night.

(all Dhs22 for one or Dhs58 for three). There’s a real variety of Mexican food experiences in the UAE, it’s often Tex-Mex labouring under the banner of authentic Mexican – but the dining here passes the Mex-Mex test. Messy mouthfuls of meat and tortilla enlivened with electriccitrus marinades and spicy salsas.

If you come for the eats, you’ll stay for the beats, for people getting out of their seats and dancing like they’re on the streets of Cabo.

La Carnita has an attraction to it that can’t be cultivated without sincerity – people see through gimmickry and move on if there’s nothing meaningful behind it. Add to that, promotions such as Tuesday’s taco and margaritas night (Dhs250), Thursday’s ladies’ night (which also comes with bottomless margs), the Saturday brunch (Dhs199 soft, Dhs299 house) and the Monday to Friday, 4pm to 7pm happy hour and the canvas on which La Carnita’s popularity is painted on comes alive with colour.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Dubai-based Irish artist, Anna McKeown is better known by pseudonym, Pop and Toast. You might recognise her pretty colour-splattered Champagne bottles, which have likely been popping up on your Instagram feed.

From what started out as a hobby, now earns McKeown a living, as the former art teacher receives commissions from private collectors, and even restaurants who adore her work.

“I have always had a passion for art from an early age, and I only ever saw myself working in a creative career –such as interior design, teaching, curation, consultancy or an artist,” McKeown tells us.

Before becoming a full-time artist, she studied fine art and art history and worked alongside pioneering artists around the world – many of whom have influenced her and paved her creative journey.

Her favourite art movement is abstract expressionism, which was developed in New York City in the 1950s. She gives credit to Jackson Pollock, a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement for her signature abstract painting style of splashes and neon undertones.

She added: “My style and art practice are heavily influenced by my appreciation of fashion, popular culture and interiors – and I am finally starting to be able to bridge these specialisms and work between all three areas”.

Her Champagne bottle pieces “have become very popular and are very much a key component of my brand. However, I love working on portraiture –especially the female figure, imagery from historical fashion shoots and magazines have been an influence of mine in the past,” she shares.

Speaking on her creative process, McKeown tells us: “The actual process of painting, my use of colour, the fluidity of the paint, the energy that I exert and the solitary nature of my practice, is the central driving force behind my work”.

McKeown works with a range of mediums, but most importantly she loves to explore and experiment. Her main medium is oil paints, which will always remain a constant in her practice, and in a bid to diversify, she also released a collection of NFTs last year – all of which sold out in 24 hours.

Outside of her colourful art world, McKeown is a keen yoga and Pilates practitioner. She enjoys rising early when the world is asleep and soaking in the silence during her walks on the beach.

McKeown has a number of projects coming up this year, including exhibitions across the UAE and the UK. She states that her main goal is to showcase her work in more galleries across Dubai, Europe and the UK.

Besides creating works of art for private commissions, she will also be working with several prestigious food and beverage companies and creating artwork for several new projects. She’s very much looking forward to it, and so are we.

Into the Blippiverse

Children’s entertainer Blippi brings his live show to Abu Dhabi

Blippi is a divisive character in the world of parenting. The bespectacled children’s entertainer rose to prominence on YouTube where his inclusive ‘to camera’ monologues, quirky dancing and songs about monster trucks and excavators have translated into 37 million subscribers with an average of one billion views per month. He’s essentially Kylie Jenner for pre-schoolers.

And whilst the orange and blue colour scheme along with frenzied enthusiasm about whether things ‘float or sink’ can be a jarring sight at 4am, if we’re completely honest, Blippi has often stepped in on

parenting our children when we’ve been too bleary-eyed and half-asleep to do a proper job of it ourselves. For that Blippi, we salute you.

So, if you are a parent, there’s probably a heady mix of emotions on hearing the announcement that Blippi will be bringing a musical version of his show to the stage of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena on February 18 and 19.

Blippi The Musical will land in the capital following a sell out 500-show tour in North America and the UK. Tickets to see the Abu Dhabi leg are priced from Dhs105 and are available from etihadarena.ae. There are also meet and greets available from Dhs185.

CULTURE // BLIPPI

WHO IS BLIPPI?

The Blippiverse is a confusing place. The original Blippi – the creator of the character, real name Stevin John, has recently become a parent and is taking some well-earned paternity leave (although we suspect he’s still Blippi-ing to an audience of one). Before he hung up his flat cap, John spawned a clone played by Clayton Grimm (who will likely be the one taking the stage at the Etihad Arena). Grimm has taken over Blippi reins for both the YouTube channel and the live world tour.

SEARCHING FOR MEANING IN BLIPPI SONG LYRICS

All of this has us wondering, what can we as adults learn from Blippi?

need to be”. Should we then treat this as a self-empowerment anthem? Are feet an emblematic representative of external coddling? Is “I roll on tracks” the most gangster rap thing Blippi has ever said? We’ll likely never know.

In The Blippi Tools Song, we’re delivered the refrain “when you’re working with tools, you hear all kinds of things”. Are we to assume that the street poet simply means hammer thuds and sawing noises, or is he perhaps asking us to look at our colleagues, to hear but not listen to the gossipy chatter? Is he leading us to question programmed learning, educational biases from the machine of institutionalised academia? Probably not.

If we dissect the popular Excavator ballad, one of the verses proclaims “Oh, can’t you see that I don’t have feet, I roll on tracks to get to where I

The Monster Truck Song truly is one of Blippi’s most important lyrical masterworks, and it contains within it, the absolute gem “monster trucks can jump so high, I wonder if they can jump over the moon”. If we take this literally, it’s a preposterous rumination. The escape velocity of Earth is 11 kilometres per second, well beyond the capabilities of any monster truck, not to mention their lack of lunar navigational equipment. But what if the monster truck isn’t a monster truck, and the moon isn’t truly a moon? Is it possible, dear reader, that Blippi is asking us to look within and experiment with the dissolution of our own monster truck, our ego? No?

A ‘toddler sleep regression’ YouTube rabbit hole can be a dangerous place to think from.

CULTURE // UPCOMING FILMS

years for film in recent history

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Expected: June 2023

It’s hard to resist the subconscious urge of ageist prejudice after learning that at 80, Harrison Ford is reprising his iconic action-archeologist role, Indiana Jones, for one last crack of the whip. He might not be as spritely, but the trailer teases that same pedigree of swashbuckling, snake-phobic, artefact-chasing, map-hopping, humour-laced adventuring that’s often been imitated over the past four decades, but never replicated. And an inestimably large part of its charm over that tenure has been Ford’s glint-eyed screen charisma. Of course he has his sidekicks along for the ride, this fifth chapter of the story sees the return of long-time pal and Fez enthusiast Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Indy’s Goddaughter Helena, Mads Mikkelsen also appears (presumably as arch baddy) and Antonio Banderas is also named in the cast list. We’re looking forward to it, as long as there aren’t any snakes, we hate snakes.

The Little Mermaid

Expected: May 2023

Disney’s live action presents this enchanting tale of a young fish girl living ‘under the sea’, who is so besotted with the strapping young Prince and human life that she makes a Faustian bargain with a scheming sea witch, for a shot at true love with a mouth-breather. These real world Disney reboots have enjoyed a pretty consistent approval rating so things are looking up for Ariel (played by Halle Bailey). We also have the delicious Neptunetier casting prospects of placing Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) and King Triton (Javier Bardem). We hope it finds its voice because it really feels like it deserves to be ‘part of your world’.

Oppenheimer

Expected: July 2023

This film has all the right periodic elements for a truly explosive release. Directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role and a based-on-a-real-storyline that follows the ethically-fraught series of events behind the Manhattan Project, the race to master nuclear fission and “become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. After shaking the atomic genie out of the bottle, Oppenheimer famously spent the rest of his days lobbying against its use, and we couldn’t think of a better pairing (Nolan and Murphy) to smash that sort of internal conflict nucleus apart. If all this wasn’t enough to send your expectations into an anticipatory mushroom cloud, there’s also the prospect that rather than using CGI to recreate the famous Trinity Test — Nolan, opted for a real explosion. Just not with uranium right Chris? Right Chris? Either way, literally zero chance that this will flop at the box office.

Barbie

Expected: July 2023

Take yourself back to 10 years ago. Now sit down in a studio executive’s chair and consider how you might feel if we pitched to you the idea of a romantic comedy loosely based around the imagined life of popular Mattel toy, Barbie. You’d likely march us straight out of that door, screaming something incoherent and unflattering about G.I. Joe. Snap back to today, with several big Lego movies still looming large in the rearview mirror, it seems dramatically less of a gamble. Especially when you have Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) directing and a cast that includes Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and support from Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Helen Mirren.

Gran Turismo

Expected: August 2023

This isn’t a true movie adaption of the popular Sony game, though it shares some of the same DNA. It can’t be. The game doesn’t have a plotline and whilst you may argue that might actually have improved the Assassin’s Creed movie, we wouldn’t dare comment. This film tells the miraculous real life story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster, who was recruited into a racing academy on a gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Josha Stradowski and Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Expected: November 2023

Set 64 years before the Katniss-led Hunger Games trilogy, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes tells the story of the 10th edition of the last-tribute-standing stab-off. Like the originals, it’s based on a book by Suzanne Collins — so the source material foundations at least are reliably solid. The events centre around a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the antagonist in the last series. Ambitious, sneaky but far from the sociopath you revel in despising during his autumn years – he’s tasked with tutoring a young (trigger warning) District 12 tribute by the name of Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). Expect the sort of series of events that embitter a man to walk a path of aspirational villainy.

Ferrari

Expected: TBC 2023

Adam Driver has worked pretty hard to carve out a career where he rarely picks up similar sorts of roles, but here — his turn as Enzo Ferrari, marks his second chomp on the iconic Italian designer truffle (the first being Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci, 2021). This biopic provides an autopsy on a pivotal period of the life of the famous racing driver and subsequent supercar conceiver. On the verge of financial ruin, and in wheel spin of personal turmoil, Ferrari decides to put it all on red and lead the House of Horse to some particularly risky waters.

If you’re still exhibiting mild PTSD from watching either of the big screen adaptions of Roald Dhal’s customarily dark kid’s book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, you’re in good company. Someone need only mention the word ‘Oompa-Loompa’ and we’re hurled into a dizzy fog of flashbacks — horrendous factory accidents, including children being sucked into waste valves in a Squid Gamesian furore. Wonka, examines the origin story to the character that headed up this Candyland Gulag – before the ensuing “where the blame” lawsuits. What sort of experiences build a man that metes out sadistic punishments for parent-enabled character flaws in minors? To answer that, it’s Timothée Chalamet who’s leading us on this cane-twirling jaunt of Willy Wonka — the formative years.

Action island

Why Hudayriyat is an adventure-lover’s dream

PAGE 52 MUBADALA ABU DHABI OPEN p54

Words: Laura Coughlin

A BRIDGE TO SOMEWHERE

Exploring Abu Dhabi’s very own ‘Action Island,’ one activity at a time

With a campsite, vast flat landscape, and state of the art sports facilities, Hudayriyat Island immediately seizes the imaginations of active enthusiasts, whether that activity is a battle across a hardy assault course, a knee-knocking high ropes quest, or an adrenalinepumping biking challenge. What’s On travels over the “bridge to nowhere” to get a lay of the land.

SEASIDE COURTS

Besides the facilities at 321 Sports, you’ll also find a range of activities nearer the ocean. The Hudayriyat Courts welcomes visitors daily, from 8am to midnight, and features several beach football fields and beach volleyball courts.

TRAIL X

Opened at the end of last year, Trail X is Abu Dhabi’s first and only mountain bike circuit offering a hardcore 15km biking loop. Developed to international standards, Trail X is built on rough terrain to mimic mountain, desert and rocks with routes ranging in difficulty levels from green (beginners and casual riders) and blue (biking enthusiasts), to black (hard, high adrenaline riders).

The OCR Park features the largest permanent obstacle course site in the UAE. The obstacle course has eight different challenges, as well as eight fitness stations in between each obstacle. It also features a children’s track with six smaller obstacle challenges. Visitors can enroll in classes and boot camps with OCR Park’s onsite personal trainers and instructors who design personalised programmes for visitors of all ages.

CYCLING TRACK

Hudayriyat offers up to 10km of cycling track loops for new and avid riders to make the most of. The network of tracks stretches through a recreational park, up and over waterways and along the edges of green spaces on the island.

CAMPING

Not every activity on Hudayriyat Island is predisposed to get the heart pumping. The island’s own private campsite, Bab al Nojoum (@babalnojoum_hudayriyat) is an attraction – and activity – in itself. There are an impressive 124 units of glamping accommodation to rent, including oceanfront tents, duplex tents and vintage campervans. Guests can revel in the alfresco life with barbecue and bonfire facilities, kayak and paddleboard hire, a beach cinema, kid’s playground, hammocks and assorted beach-based fun.

VELODROME

Back in 2021, Abu Dhabi was declared a ‘Bike City’ by Union Cyclist Internationale, the world governing body for cycling. In tandem with the award ceremony, Abu Dhabi announced a series of new measures and facilities to encourage more people to take up cycling, including a huge 3,500-seater velodrome to be built on Hudayriyat Island, to host international track cycling events.

CIRCUIT X

Circuit X is home to four unique parks in one: BMX Park, Splash Park, High Ropes Park, and Skate Park. Splash Park features several exciting water-themed attractions, while Skate Park invites new and experienced skateboarders and scooter riders to navigate its many obstacles and get tips from onsite coaches. Meanwhile, BMX Park is home to a tricky pump track suitable for experienced and advanced riders only. Finally, at the High Ropes Park, visitors can test their nerve on two quad-quivering courses, complete with zipline and climbing wall.

321 SPORTS

The 321 Sports complex is Hudayriyat Island’s actionpacked sports village. You’ll find indoor and outdoor football pitches, basketball, badminton, tennis and padel courts, as well as a full-spec gym and group classes. Visit 321sports.ae to hire out a pitch or court. Meanwhile, a 750m jogging track surrounds the complex.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Take a water cruise along the Seine

Admire Paris from a different perspective with a water cruise along the Seine. The scenic one-hour cruise picks you up from the Eiffel Tower, where iconic sights include the Notre Dame, Louvre, and Grand Palais. The boat has outdoor and indoor seating with large windows, so you won’t miss a thing. Get your camera at the ready!

Discover some intriguing (very) hidden bars

Hidden behind phone boxes, grocery shops and launderettes, cocktail lovers will find secret bars oozing with creativity and character that are a must-visit for a unique Parisian experience. Here are some clues to get you started on your secret-bar crawl: L’Épicier translates to ‘the grocer’ in English, and is located near the Place de la République, while Little Red Door is nestled in the trendy Marais neighbourhood and is currently fifth on the World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Visit the iconic Montmartre

The magical village on a hill, located in 18th arrondissement, is famous for its cobbled streets, quaint cafés, art museums, and of course breathtaking views of the city from the top of Sacré-Cœur. Make a reservation at La Café Rose (the beautiful pink restaurant) for a traditional French farm-to-table dining experience.

Lebanon LOVE FOR

Lebanon may be famous for many things, but food is arguably its greatest draw. Sure, its winter and skiing season is in full throttle but give us some kibbeh mishwieh and spicy makanek any day of the week. Here’s our guide the best foodie spots...

Aculinary tour of Lebanon should take in as many corners of the country as possible, but start in Beirut. Nobody really needs an introduction to the Lebanese capital, with its sometimes-intoxicating mix of hedonism, glamour, chaos and danger, but where to eat? Well, head to Tawlet in Mar Mikhael and Liza Beirut in Achrafieh. Both offer traditional Lebanese dishes to die for but come at them from different angles.

At Tawlet, the farmer’s kitchen of Souk el Tayeb, the restaurant’s continuously changing menu, rotation of cooks, and championing of small-scale producers means dishes are regional, seasonal and simple. The last time What’s On visited, we ate everything from massaee’t batenjeen (an aubergine and tomato dish) to bayd

bil fokhara (eggs cooked in a clay dish). The main dining area includes a long communal table and if you’re lucky you might spot Souk el Tayeb’s founder, Kamal Mouzawak, mingling with diners and enjoying the true taste of Lebanese home cooking.

At Liza Beirut, there’s a similar dedication to craft and tradition, although with a twist. Founded by restaurateur, Liza Asseily, and her husband Ziad, the dishes are fresh, light, generous and bursting with flavour – but just as important, is the restaurant’s location. Occupying the second floor of a former 19th century palace, Liza Beirut is something to behold. Even if you’re not a foodie, go for the decor. There are stunning Ottoman-style windows, ceramic cityscapes by Marilyn Massoud and Rasha Nawam, and wallpaper designed by Idarica Gazzoni. It’s arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Beirut.

TRAVEL // LEBANON

When you’re done, head south to Tyre (called Sour in Arabic), where you’ll not only be treated to the Old City’s narrow cobbled lanes, brightly coloured houses, courtyard gardens, boutique hotels and beautiful shuttered windows, but some of the best street food in Lebanon. Take Mahfouz, for example. Essentially a sandwich shop, its speciality is fatayel – beef filets cut into small, mince-like pieces and then fried and served in Arabic bread with tarator and tomatoes. Chicken and makanek (a small, pan-fried beef sausage) versions are also available, but it’s the fatayel that’s the winner. Located in the Old Souk, it’s takeaway only, so probably best to take a few with you for the road.

Another Tyre institution is Baroud. Also situated in the Old Souk, it opens at the crack of dawn. A morning spot only, it serves traditional Lebanese breakfasts with zero pretension and maximum taste. The menu is limited – foul, hummus with tahini, or msabbaha (hot chickpeas with tahini, crushed garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and salt) – but delightful. With plastic chairs and only a handful of tables, don’t go expecting five-star luxury. When you’re done, go and enjoy the splendour of Tyre, with its dizzying array of Roman and Byzantine ruins and glorious beaches.

Wherever you go next, you’ll be in for a treat. If you drive east through Bikfaya and Bteghrine, past Wadi al-Jamajem (the Valley of the Skulls) and on towards Mount Sannine, you’ll eventually reach Baskinta. On the outskirts of the town, set back from the main road down a short track, is a small bakery run by husband and wife, Krikor and Laure.

Perched peacefully on the side of a steep valley, in the spring and summer months their home is sprinkled with the harvests of rural endeavour: bowls of thyme and herbal tea; olives and tomatoes; cucumbers and courgettes; mint and parsley; even walnuts and aubergines. Somewhere down the hill you’ll see chickens and their freshly laid eggs.

The bakery itself is humble, with low ceilings and an oven that can only fit two manakeesh at a time. There is a long wooden board on which dough – handmade in the early hours of the morning – is rolled into ovals and smothered with ingredients. When we visit, one is topped with three types of cheese (akkawi, kashkawan and mozzarella), another with homemade zaatar. Then there’s bayd w awarma, a calorie-ladened masterpiece topped with cheese, eggs and lamb confit, which sits confidently in the centre of the large aluminium tray. There is labneh w awarma, too, and bowls of olives and freshly chopped tomatoes. It’s the best manakeesh you’ll ever have – all served with the fullness of Lebanese generosity.

WHERE TO STAY

If you’re feeling flush and love the glamour of Golden Age Beirut, there’s only one place you can stay – the Phoenicia. The hotel looms large in the imagination and is all delicately perforated façades and shimmering blue and turquoise tiles. Zaitunay Bay is a stone’s throw away and the hotel’s interior is a fascinating mix of the luxurious and the ostentatious. Originally opened in 1961, the hotel was only reopened in October last year following two years of closure in the wake of the Beirut blast. It’s return to life created quite a buzz and signified a return to better times for Lebanon’s tourism industry, although the country remains deeply entrenched in a crippling financial crisis.

THE LOCATION

This unique getaway can be found a little way off the beaten track. In Dubai Heritage Vision, Terra Solis is the brainchild of the group behind one of the biggest music festivals in the world, Tomorrowland. With very little around it, Terra Solis is the perfect desert destination for those who are looking to escape the city, but not leave behind a sense of luxury and fun. The venue is only open to adults aged 21 years and over, so guests can enjoy a weekend of ultimate relaxation.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Driving up to the venue feels like you’re on a desert safari, complete with camelspotting opportunities. Upon entering, the pool is welcoming, and the exterior of the venue has a traditionally Arabian feel. The resort blends into its sandy surroundings

perfectly and the rooms spread out into the desert landscape give the experience an adventurous edge.

THE ROOM

We stayed in the Perseid lodge which comes equipped with an en-suite bathroom, and a king size bed with pillows that had just the right amount of weight. The room has a minimalistic feel to it with white linen and concrete floors. Wooden accents and black hardware in the bathrooms are sleek and modern, with a walk-in shower. Other options include the Polaris tents, and the ultra-VIP Orian lodges. All of the room categories include breakfast, as well as access to the facilities and a sun lounger by the pool.

THE FACILITIES

The main goal of Terra Solis is for you to relax and rejuvenate, with rooms surrounding the vibrant but relaxing pool

area. It is the main allure of the destination. There are sunbeds and cabanas available for rent for those looking for a daycation. There is also a DJ on the decks at the pool playing energetic beats throughout the day.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Poolside, there is a small menu to choose from that features everything from crudites (Dhs45) to short rib sliders (Dhs90) as well as an array of refreshing drinks. We enjoyed the Sala Fizz (Dhs70), which is a gin-based drink that was light and refreshing. Breakfast is served near the pool at Mesa and consists of a selection of sharing dishes and a range of drinks. We shared a Bedouin salad and avocado scramble, which were both delicious and a delightful way to finish off the stay.

THE ROOM RATES

A one-night stay in the Perseid lodge for two adults, which is inclusive of breakfast, sun loungers and all the facilities, costs approx. Dhs3,128 inclusive of all taxes.
