Are those of the sparkling waters of perfectly chilled swimming pools. Of cloudless skies on early morning beach walks. And gently lapping waves on sunset strolls along the Arabian Gulf. Because while summer may be just around the corner, if you’re staying in the emirates, you can look forward to a season of hopping between the country’s best hotels – no passport required. With the high temperatures comes the low tourism season, meaning the UAE’s dreamy desert resorts, golden beach retreats and sleek city pads all roll out the red carpet for residents with reduced rates, dining deals and plenty of perks thrown in. So whether it’s a bucket list family escape or a luxe new resort perfect for a romantic getaway, we bring you the best from the staycation scene from p12.
If you’re not quite ready to head indoors just yet, then this issue has you covered with a guide to one of our favourite lesser-trodden spots, Khorfakkan. With the East Coast a few degrees cooler than the West, this sunny enclave is the perfect spot to escape to for outdoor adventures, be it early morning hikes or dinner on the beach. Find our perfect itinerary on p18. And we couldn’t miss out on shining a light on the standout spots across the Northern Emirates recognised in the What’s On Dubai Awards 2025. While these awards largely celebrate the very best of our neighbours in Dubai, a duo of awards for Favourite Restaurant and Favourite Staycation pay tribute to the very best in the business across the Northern Emirates. See who won what on p23.

This month, we chat to Charlotte Bruce-Alexander (@farfromfat126), Mum of three, career woman in the medical device world, part-time nutrition student, fitness influencer extraordinaire and co-founder of gym wear brand SWTZ. She’s juggling so much she refers to it as ‘cardio’, but she’s managed to take a bit of time out to share with us the benefit of her 15 years in Dubai. These are a few of her favourite spots in the UAE…
When the UAE weather cools down, it’s Jebel Jais all the way, nothing beats a mountain hike or bike with fresh air and no Wi-Fi. The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort is my ultimate staycation spot. The beach is dreamy, the service is nextlevel, and it somehow makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island without ever leaving the UAE. 3Fils, Jumeirah: Tiny, lowkey, no frills and without a doubt the best sushi and seafood I’ve ever had here. You’ll probably wait for a table as it’s not such a ‘hidden’ gem these days… but honestly, I’d happily wait in the car park just to dine there.
Kite Beach is our go-to family spot, the kids love renting bikes and riding along the beachfront while we soak up the sun (or chase them around, let’s be honest). A quick dip in the sea followed by a cheeky ice cream makes it the perfect chilled-out day for everyone.
Hands down the best blow out food binge in the UAE, is the culinary duo of a Fuddruckers burger followed by a box of pick ‘n’ mix from The Sweetie Shop. It’s my ultimate treat combo, and honestly, if I had to choose a last meal, this would be it. No regrets, just pure joy. I wasn’t 60kg heavier at one point for no reason. fuddruckers.ae, @thesweetieshop.dxb
If you haven’t camped in the UAE desert, you’re missing out. There’s something unreal about those sunrises, total peace, golden skies, and for a few glorious moments, of no emails or school runs. Just you, the sand, and your slightly overcooked marshmallows.
My favourite chill-out spot in the UAE is a Privilee day. Any beach or pool with a view and a vibe. A cabana, child free, a cold drink, and zero responsibilities for a few hours. Bliss. Bonus points if there’s a wellness retreat like the one at Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi involved. @privilee_uae, @alwathbahotel

Sharjah’s East Coast has quietly been gaining momentum as a scenic spot for a weekend escape from the city. Let us plan your perfect itinerary…
WORDS: ALICE HOLTHAM-PARGIN
9am
Begin your adventure at Al Rafisah Dam
You can kickstart the fun before you reach the heart of Khorfakkan by stopping off at Al Rafisah Dam. About 10 minutes outside of the central area, this picturesque enclave has existed since the 1980s but has been recently redeveloped to make it more tourist-friendly. As such, you can now enjoy walks, hikes and kayaking around the serene lake. For stretching views, enjoy a short climb up the side of a mountain to the castle, or for a more low-tempo morning, pass by to the manmade waterfall.
visitsharjah.com/al-rafisah-dam
1pm
Soak up the local sights
One of Khorfakkan’s crowning features, the Romanesque Khorfakkan Amphitheatre is a must-visit. A celebrated local landmark, it can accommodate more than 3,500 spectators and has been designed with a state-of-the-art cooling system, making it a yearround attraction. Admire the architecture, walk the tiered steps that gaze towards the stage, and make a pit stop at the amphitheatre restaurant. Next door, the Khorfakkan waterfall is another towering structure you won’t want to miss. Stretching some 45 metres, it’s carved out of natural rock, and the windows at the top open for visitors at regular intervals, for those looking to enjoy the best views.
11am
Brunch at a novelty café
A striking structure at Khorfakkan’s Resistance Monument, Railway Café has been uniquely designed to resemble a train station, albeit one of beautiful glass and geometric structures. Pick up a hot or cold coffee at the brew platform, or grab an espresso from espresso station, and order sweet treats like date pudding, French toast, or the Instagrammable kunafa cheesecake. Breakfast is served until 2pm, and features favourites like scrambled egg on toast, shakshuka, and eggs Florentine. @railwaycafe.ae
5pm
Step back in time at Souk Sharq
Be transported back in time at Souk Sharq, an old market styled as a tribute to the UAE’s yesteryear. Wander the halls and enjoy the sights, aromas and sounds that drift from the market stalls, picking up heritage crafts, handmade souvenirs, and sampling local flavours at the many restaurants and cafes dotted throughout. The market also houses the Traditional Craft Museum, well worth a visitor to delve deeper into the history of Khorfakkan (it’s free to enter, too).
6am
8pm
Bed down in a heritage hotel
While there are several modern hotels under construction in Khorfakkan, for a taste of the traditional check in to Najd Al Meqsar. Arguably one of the most unique stays in the UAE, the Sharjah Collection property has transformed a traditional mountain village into a boutique heritage hotel of just seven ‘Kareen Houses’, each a one-bedroom abode filled with charming traditional features. While free WiFi, AC and Smart TVs have been added, the hand-hewn wooden beams, stone walls and thatched roofs retain the traditional charm. Room rates start from Dhs720.
@najdalmeqsar
9am
Relax on the beach
The golden sands of this natural beauty make for a lovely spot to bask in the sunshine, but the corniche along Khorfakkan beach is also dotted with plenty of family-friendly spots to enjoy. Stroll along the scenic promenade and make lunch plans around pretty restaurants like chic seaside spot Pentagon (@pentagonuae), Mangrove Café (@mangrovecafe.ae) or casual Italian restaurant, Vinci (@vincirestaurantuae). There’s a play area for little ones to burn off some steam, tennis courts available for hire, and watersports too. @khorfakkanbeach
Enjoy a sunrise hike
To really make the most of this scenic enclave, set your alarm early and head out on a morning hike to catch the sun dramatically lift over the calm waters of the sea. The Al Rabi Mountain trail is one of the most popular and easy hikes in the UAE – clearly marked so that it’s suitable for all abilities. While the trail does get steep at times, the views across the Hajar mountains and Khorfakkan landmarks are rewarding. Make a pit stop at The View by Wave and treat yourself to a nourishing post-hike breakfast.
@theviewbywave
1pm
Discover the colourful marine life on a boat trip to Shark Island
Those with a penchant for aqua-based adventure should head to Khorfakkan port and take a boat out to Shark Island, officially called Sira Khorfakkan, a small island five minutes off the coast of the beach. The crystal waters are home to a phenomenal variety of marine life and is so clear that you’ll likely be able to see the shoals of fish swimming by from the boat. But the underwater world is best enjoyed with a snorkelling session, where you might also see rays and black tip reef sharks.
4pm

After a weekend of thrills, it’s time to head home – but not without taking a small diversion to Medellin, a speciality coffee spot where you can order via drivu and have your coffee delivered to the car. @medellin.ae

Why Ras Al Khaimah?
EAT // REVIEW
Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin
Ras Al Khaimah has a raw, honest energy. It’s close to nature and not trying to be anything else, that really spoke to me. I’m not chasing trends, I’m building something meaningful close to the source. Farmhouse by Syrco is about more than dining, it’s about connection.
How easy is it to apply a farm-totable ethos here?
It’s a journey and one I believe in fully. I stay close to my values: traceability, nature, and transparency. We work with as many local producers as possible. There’s so much already here: local seafood, traditional farms and innovative growing techniques. I think many chefs would be surprised by what’s possible in the UAE.
What’s your favourite dish on the new menu?
The Dibba Bay oysters in three preparations.
1. Pure with a vinaigrette of pink pepper and coriander.
2. Salad version with cucumber, roquette, and rose-hip. Fresh flavour, with some Arabic influences.
3. Poached oyster with dukkah beurre blanc, green olives, and salted lemon. It’s one local ingredient with three expressions. Simple, but full of character.
Describe your culinary style in three words?
Nature – Conscious – Modern. Follow the chef at @syrcobakker MEET THE CHEF
There’s much discussion surrounding the transformation of Ras Al Khaimah’s hotel landscape, spearheaded by the upcoming Wynn Marjan Island. But a quieter revolution is also happening in the emirate’s restaurant scene. And leading the way is Farmhouse by Syrco, where acclaimed Dutch chef Syrco Bakker is now at the helm of The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert’s signature restaurant.
The rustic-luxe restaurant, overlooking a watering hole where Arabian oryx and gazelles regularly stop by, is lovely and serene – a fitting destination for an elevated farm-to-table concept. Inside, wooden beams, oversized vases filled with pampas and shelves laden with jars lean into the farmhouse theme. Outside, the terrace features a firepit, a bar, and lots of seating.
vinaigrette to make a simple dish sing. From the specials, the BBQ grilled prawns (Dhs110) are a dish we wish could make it onto the permanent menu – full of flavour, deliciously meaty, and simply served in a punchy harissa. From the steaks, we venture further afield with a Wagyu striploin from New South Wales (Dhs350), Australia, an example of Syrco’s commitment to the highest quality – responsibly sourced – ingredients. It arrives perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, although the side of beef parmentier, a rich stew topped with mashed potato foam, feels unnecessary. We’re glad to have ordered a side of fries (Dhs45) that feels more like a natural pairing.
The menu is concise and focuses heavily on locally and sustainably sourced ingredients. As well as the regular á la carte, there’s a special menu for meats and another one for seasonal specials.
The heirloom tomato salad (Dhs90) uses juicy local tomatoes and pairs them with creamy burrata and a zesty
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Local flavours get an innovative upgrade in a unique desert setting.
For dessert, the light and prettily plated berries (Dhs65) features crunchy meringue, creamy citrus mousse and a sweet berry compote and makes for a refreshing end to a great meal. Farmhouse by Syrco, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, 5.30pm to 11pm, Mon to Fri and Sun, 1pm to 4pm and 5.30pm to 11pm Sat. @farmhousebysyrco
Mateen Shah is the mind behind Assembly, the vintage interiors concept store bringing the past back – and making it chic
What inspired you to open Assembly?
Assembly was born from a passion for storytelling through design – bringing together rare, timeless pieces that add character to modern spaces. The thrill of discovering unique vintage finds and giving them new life is what truly inspired me. Believe it or not my home was where I experimented and built my personal collection that lead me down this path.
Your collection feels incredibly curated. How do you go about sourcing these one-of-a-kind pieces? Sourcing is a mix of strategy and serendipity. I work with trusted collectors, attend auctions worldwide, and constantly explore estate sales for hidden gems. The hunt itself is just as exciting as finding the perfect piece.
Who is the typical Assembly customer?
Assembly attracts a mix of seasoned collectors and a new generation of designconscious buyers looking for unique,
storied pieces. There’s a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and heritage, especially among younger collectors.
Is there a particular style, era, or designer that seems to resonate most with your clientele right now?
Mid-century modern and Art
Deco continue to resonate, but there’s also rising interest in Brutalist and postmodern designs. People are drawn to pieces with strong forms, rich patina, and a sense of authenticity.
Could you share a few of your personal favourite pieces currently available at Assembly?
Right now, I’m particularly drawn to the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Praying Mantis Sculptural Floor Lamp, and a beautifully patinaed Persian rug. Each iconic in its own right. They all embody timeless design and bring warmth, artistry, and presence to a space.
What’s next for Assembly?
We hope to expand our curation, collaborating with designers, and creating immersive experiences through exhibitions and events. We want to continue shaping a destination for collectors and design lovers in the region. Visit Assembly’s physical store inside Klekktic, Warehouse 9 –924A St, Al Quoz, or follow @assembly.vintagestore for more.
Bait Elowal is a multi-dimensional space that puts Emirati heritage centre stage
If each Emirate can be defined by a certain personality trait, Sharjah is undoubtedly the cultural capital of the UAE. This makes it the perfect place for Bait Elowal, a multi-dimensional sanctuary of heritage and cuisine. Brought to life by Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Bait Elowal is a thoughtful homage to Sharjah’s history and hospitality, laced with handpicked touches inspired by Sheikha Bodour’s global travels.
Even the name is deliberate. ‘Bait’ means house, while the Emirati word ‘Elowal’ is a phrase used to describe a traveller who returns home to the familiar with new stories, trinkets and ideas to share. Which is exactly what Sheikha Bodour has poured into Bait Elowal. The resulting space has transformed the former Beit al Mazrou heritage house in Sharjah’s beating heart into a beacon of fascinating and deliberate storytelling that pays tribute to Sharjah’s role as a thriving trading hub. Much of the traditional architecture has been lovingly preserved, and the authentic Arabian aesthetic remains across the weathered walls, Arabesque arches, and a central courtyard
where a fountain trickles softly. “Bait Elowal is a real tribute to the values of care and hospitality shared by Emirati people,” Sheikha Bodour explains. “[It] embodies the essence of our identity.”
Stepping through the intricately carved wooden door, the ground floor features Soghat Elowal, a concept store of curated pieces that are handcrafted, ethically and locally sourced. Many are designed exclusively for Bait Elowal, and all are infused with the passion and artistry of traditional makers. Here, guests can pick up souvenirs to share memories of their travels. This is also where you’ll find the Bait Elowal restaurant, extending into the courtyard, where a menu designed

to transport you back in time and along the Silk Road is filled with dishes like saffron and orange arborio rice, roasted eggplant with red miso and feta, and lamb shank braised in Silk Road spices. Elsewhere, you can also discover a diverse collection of Arabic and English prose at Al Kutubkhana, Bait Elowal’s beautiful library and bookstore, a haven for literature lovers where texts of all styles line the wooden shelves.
Upstairs, highlights include a serene tea terrace that overlooks the bustling port; and Al Atlas, a private dining room where guests can curate their own experience, ensuring no two evenings are alike. The crowning feature is the open-air rooftop, which provides a blank canvas for special memories to unfold.

TRIED & TESTED
Tucked within the ultra-luxe One&Only One Za’abeel, the Longevity Hub by Clinique La Prairie is a serene three-storey sanctuary dedicated to cutting-edge wellness.
Spanning 3,800 sqm, a spa experience here is a futuristic, hyper-personalised approach to optimising health and longevity. And if contrast therapy is already part of your wellness routine, prepare to experience it on a whole new level.
We began with a cryotherapy session, stepping into a sleek vertical chamber chilled to a staggering -110°C. If you’re familiar with ice baths, you’d expect the initial shock followed by a strange sense of calm. Cryo flips the script – it’s deceptively manageable at first, but each second intensifies. The sensation creeps in, sharpening your mental focus and demanding a different kind of resilience. It’s both physical and psychological conditioning, too.
Post-freeze, we were guided to a calming treatment suite via private elevator. While the room was gorgeously appointed, it was slightly disappointing that the
curtains were drawn, obscuring what must be a jaw-dropping view of Dubai’s skyline. Presumably, this helps maintain temperature, but it feels like a design oversight in an otherwise flawless setting.
Next came a 60-minute detox lymphatic drainage massage (Dhs1,000). Often underrated, this treatment is foundational for holistic health. Gentle, rhythmic movements help stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the release of toxins, reducing water retention, and promoting immune function. It’s deeply relaxing, yet energising, a bit like hitting the reset button
on your internal systems.
Though our official session ended here, we couldn’t resist rounding things off in the wellness lounge, opting for the sauna, but there’s a steam room and Jacuzzi available, too. After cryo and massage, the warmth felt like a luxurious reward – relaxing the muscles and sealing in the benefits of the earlier treatments. A perfectly curated journey towards vitality.

Luxury meets tradition by the iconic Dubai Creek at the perfectly-formed Al Seef Heritage Hotel TRAVEL // STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT
If you’re looking to experience the cultural soul of a city that’s always in flux, Al Seef Heritage Hotel offers a beautifully nostalgic escape. Set along the historic Dubai Creek, this boutique hotel blends Emirati heritage with modern hospitality, placing you right in the heart of Old Dubai, yet feeling worlds away from the steel-and-glass sprawl of Downtown.
Whether you’re weaving through the souks or cruising past wind towers in a buggy, everything about the experience feels like stepping into a slower, storyrich version of the city. The hotel itself blends seamlessly into the old market surroundings, almost disappearing into its own setting, which is exactly the point.
Dubai’s Al Seef district is, in a word, unique. Set along the storied banks of
the Creek, it’s a heritage hotspot perfect for aimless wandering and deep cultural dives. The hotel sits just steps from the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, bustling spice and gold souks, abra stations, and beloved restaurants like Bayt Al Wakeel. It’s an area that anchors you in the past, but doesn’t leave you stranded from the action.
Spread across 10 traditional “bayts” (Arabic for homes), the hotel is a time capsule done right. The architecture and interiors reflect a bygone era – wind towers, vintage radios, weathered doors –but with just enough modernity to keep it all comfortable. Rooms are intentionally simple, letting the heritage shine, while small luxuries remind you you’re still in a Hilton. Some rooms look out over the Creek, others open onto quiet inner
courtyards made for stargazing or morning coffee. It’s atmospheric, grounded, and refreshingly unpretentious.
The hotel’s in-house restaurant, Sabaa, delivers hearty Emirati flavours in a warm, laid-back setting. The breakfast buffet is generous, with local touches alongside international staples, while the à la carte menu offers comforting dishes like grilled meats, seafood, and regional favourites. Grab a table outside if the weather’s kind, you’ll have a front-row seat to the rhythm of souk life.
Al Seef Heritage Hotel is a rare find in a city that often leans toward the ultramodern. It’s charming, thoughtful, and effortlessly authentic – a stay that gives you a sense of place. With its winning location, rich cultural cues, and low-key luxury, it’s the kind of hotel that invites you to slow down, look around, and fall a little in love with the old soul of Dubai.
Rooms start from Dhs270 per night. Al Seef Heritage Hotel Dubai Curio Collection by Hilton, Al Seef Street, Dubai. Tel: (0)4 707 7080.
