Here’s what happened at the first What’s On Chef’s Table at Teatro
It was an intimate night of fine dining in the capital…
Last month, What’s On hosted the first Chef’s Table at Teatro, Park Rotana. Guests arrived to a specially crafted cocktail that set the mood for the evening. Once seated, chefs Vincenzo Viti and Anbu Narayanan introduced the menu, sharing the stories and inspiration behind each course. For Vincenzo, from Altamura in southern Italy, his upbringing and extensive experience in Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels continues to influence every dish he creates. Anbu brought more than 15 years of international experience, but it was his love of creativity and his instinct for transforming simple ingredients into something extraordinary that shone through. Throughout the evening, laughter and the soft clink of glasses filled the restaurant. The chefs kept the room buzzing as they quizzed diners eager to guess the secret ingredients, weaving in personal stories and
the inspiration that shaped each dish. The menu began with a delicate amuse bouche before moving into amberjack sashimi lifted by plum, ginger, and eucalyptus. Then came the signature Scallop cappuccino, playful under its veil of coffee foam and liquorice. Handmade oxtail agnolotti followed, laced with aged Parmesan and truffle. The star was the beef “royale,” slow-cooked and wrapped in saffron and ossobuco sauce. To end, The Farmer’s Breakfast with persimmons, vanilla, and olive oil, before petit fours of hazelnut praline, pistachio financier, madeleines, and chocolate tabs added the perfect finishing touch. The waiters served each dish with precision, they looked almost too good to eat, and when it did hit the palate, it tasted even better. Each of the five courses was thoughtfully paired with wine, elevating the flavours and the experience.
The night was Teatro at its best: inventive, intimate, and unforgettable.

EDITOR’S LETTER
OCTOBER IN ABU DHABI TASTES LIKE TIME WELL SPENT
Hello Abu Dhabi. This issue arrives with cooler mornings and that gentle switch in mood that makes the city feel newly unwrapped. The pace softens. The light gets kinder. Conversations start to linger. It is the perfect moment to slow down and savour the details. Our cover story is dedicated to the art of afternoon tea. Not as a checklist, but as a small ceremony that turns an ordinary day into something you remember. We sought out the capital’s most thoughtful services. The teas that tell a story. The trays that arrive like tiny architecture. The rooms where time seems to move at a gracious tilt. Pinkies are optional, delight is not. There is excitement on the dining front as well. Abu Dhabi’s restaurant scene keeps gathering momentum and we have rounded up the newest arrivals. Places with confident kitchens, warm service and menus that make you plan a second visit before you have finished the first. In the spirit of eating where the city shops, we spent time at Mina Fish Market. The calls of the vendors, the gleam of the day’s catch, the simple pleasure of choosing what will become dinner. It is a reminder that food is a conversation long before it is a plate.
Music season is gathering speed, so we pulled together the gigs to catch before the year closes. Bookmark it. Compare calendars. That one artist you always said you would see might finally be on a stage within reach. With October’s cooler air I have taken the running routes outside again and collected the best places to stretch your legs across the capital. Waterside paths that wake you gently and park loops that ask for one more lap. I tried to make peace with the treadmill all summer. The treadmill and I have agreed to see other people. Travel takes us further afield. There is a three city playbook for South Africa written from a life spent between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, and a story about how Riyadh wins you over from the first marhaba. I hope these pages lead you to a pot of tea poured just right. A new restaurant that becomes a regular. A market stall that learns your name and a chorus that sticks in your head for days. If we pass each other after a run, please pretend I look faster than I do. And if we meet over afternoon tea, the extra scone is absolutely for sharing.

HOW TO BOOK
are spoiled: icon Abdul Majeed Abdullah performs in Etihad Arena on October 11, while Alshami headlines the same night in Space42 Arena with a set built for singing along. Catch the acclaimed play Al Zeer Salem on October 3 and 4.
PLAN THE PERFECT OCTOBER
The beauty of Abu Dhabi’s event season is how easy it is to do it all: fan zones by day, a headline show by night, and a breezy brunch somewhere in between. Venues are purpose-built and well connected, with parking that’s actually painless and public transport options that make nights out fuss-free. Make a weekend of it, book a stay on Yas Island or along the Corniche, add a museum or gallery visit, and stitch your event into a mini city break.
Prices vary by event, and the hottest tickets move quickly. Your best bet is to secure seats now via Platinumlist and the Etihad Arena booking channels, then build the rest of your plan around your headliners. Pro tip: arrive early to soak up pre-show buzz, merch drops and pop-up dining, October turns the whole city into an extended foyer.
From courts and octagons to orchestras and arena anthems, Abu Dhabi’s October is a chooseyour-own-adventure with no wrong answer. Pick your nights, gather your crew, and let the capital do what it does best: deliver a month of memories, back-to-back.

From golden cappuccinos to Zen-inspired pastries, Abu Dhabi’s afternoon tea scene is a moment to pause, savour, and indulge
In a city that never stops, pausing can feel revolutionary. Afternoon tea offers that rare moment to slow down, even for an hour, to step away from emails, errands, and the constant hum of daily life.
Tea’s story began in China almost 5,000 years ago. Legend says Emperor Shen Nong discovered it when wild tea leaves slipped into his boiling water. Whether accident or invention, tea became prized for its taste and healing properties, and by the Tang dynasty it was a cultural ritual. From there, tea moved along the Silk Road to Japan, where it was elevated into a meditative ceremony. By the 16th century it arrived in Europe with Portuguese and Dutch traders, eventually becoming England’s national obsession.
Afternoon tea as we know it began in the 1800s when Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, added sandwiches and cake to her mid-afternoon pot of tea. What started as a private pause quickly became a fashionable social affair. High tea followed, with heartier dishes for the working classes, and over time the terms blurred, though afternoon tea kept its place as a symbol of elegance.
Today in Abu Dhabi, this centuries-old ritual has been reimagined with Middle Eastern flair. Hotels and boutique cafés serve towers of delicate pastries, savoury bites, and fragrant loose-leaf teas, sometimes infused with local spices or presented with Emirati touches. It is as much about theatre as taste, with each tiered tray and perfectly brewed cup reminding us of tea’s remarkable journey from emperors and duchesses to the tables of the capital. the fragrant
Karak Tea - The Little Cup That Fuels the City
Born in South Asia and embraced in the Gulf, karak has become the UAE’s unofficial national drink. It is made by simmering strong black tea with cardamom, sugar, and either evaporated or condensed milk, creating a rich, creamy, and slightly spiced flavour. In Abu Dhabi, you will find it everywhere, from roadside kiosks to stylish cafés, often served in small paper cups for just a few dirhams. Loved for its taste, affordability, and caffeine kick, karak is a daily ritual that brings people together across cultures.

Explore Abu Dhabi’s
Mina Fish Market where fresh catches, lively stalls, and the ocean’s flavours come alive
WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER
No trip to Abu Dhabi is complete until you’ve wandered past the icelined stalls of Mina Fish Market, tucked inside Zayed Port.
It’s a quiet Wednesday morning and the market looks almost deserted. Outside, construction cranes rise against the skyline. Inside, sandy beige walls hold the hum of a slower day. Fishmongers in matching blue uniforms stand ready in front of stalls with ice piled high with glistening fish, their voices carrying as they try to catch a customer’s attention. There’s a clean, briny tang in the air, sharp enough to remind you where you are, but not overwhelming.
Each stall offers a spread that tells its own story. Like Abu Dhabi itself, the counters are a mix of worlds. You’ll find hamour and safi caught off the UAE’s coast sitting alongside fish from Oman, Turkey, Norway, and Saudi Arabia. The market is a meeting point of oceans, just as the city is a meeting point of cultures.
INSIDE MINA FISH MARKET
Every few steps someone called out, waving me over with the promise of the freshest catch. The fishmongers were eager to tell me what they had laid out on ice, pointing to gleaming silver bodies and striped tails. Part of the charm of Mina Fish Market is that it can feel chaotic at first, with so many stalls competing for your attention, but once you know how to move through the space it becomes less overwhelming and more of an adventure.
Seafood at Mina Fish Market is as fresh as it gets and surprisingly affordable. A mix of fish from the UAE and beyond can be picked up for
How to navigate the market
• Arrive early: The best fish lands in the morning. By mid-day, the most popular choices are often gone.
• Walk the whole floor first: Prices and catches vary from stall to stall. A slow loop
around Dhs 16 for three kilos, depending on the catch of the day. Cleaning will set you back about the same, or you can bring it into one of the market’s restaurants and have it cooked for roughly Dhs 15 per kilo. Prices shift, deals change, and a little haggling is part of the fun, so it pays to take your time and explore the stalls before deciding what to take home.
gives you a sense of what’s on offer before you commit.
• Haggle politely: Bargaining is expected. A smile goes further than you think, and often walking away brings the price down.
• Check the origin: Fish here comes from across the world. Ask where it’s from if you want something local.
• Use the cleaning stations: For a small fee, the fishmongers will scale,

• Eat it fresh: Several restaurants inside the market will marinate and grill your fish on the spot. It doesn’t get fresher than that.
Inside the Stalls, Counters and Restaurants of Mina Market
Fresh Stalls
The heart of the market is in its rows of fresh-fish stalls, each one a glistening display of silver, red, and gold scales lying on beds of ice. This is where the energy of the place really lives, with fishmongers calling out and shoppers moving from counter to counter in search of the best deal. The variety is staggering. Prices shift depending on the catch of the day, which is why it pays to take a slow walk around before you buy.
Cleaning
At the far end of the market is the cleaning section, a hive of activity where the real work begins. Here, fishmongers scale, gut and slice your catch according to how you want to eat it. A parrotfish destined for the fryer will be neatly filleted, while a red snapper meant for the grill is butterflied open. Prices depend on the preparation, but it’s still a bargain. Around Dhs16 gets you about three kilos of fish cleaned, and the whole process takes no more than 15 minutes. If queues are
Dry Fish Counters
Tucked among the stalls are a handful of dry fish counters, a reminder of how fish
was preserved long before refrigeration. These are less showy but just as much a part of the tradition. Here you’ll find salted and dried varieties used in stews and broths, the kind of ingredients that have been staples in Emirati kitchens for generations. They add a different layer to the market, quieter and less crowded, but still steeped in history.
Restaurants
Don’t settle for the first restaurant you see. The market has plenty, and some of the best are tucked away at the back, hidden in plain sight. If you’re in the mood for something quick and fuss-free, the kiosks at the entrance serve up your fish cafeteria-style, grilled or fried and ready in minutes. For a slower, sit-down meal, head deeper inside where the more established restaurants are. A word of caution: some stalls are linked to specific restaurants and may try to steer you in a particular direction. It’s worth taking a wander and choosing a spot that feels right for you.
From Market to Meal at Al Shader
The Spot That Stole the Show at Mina Fish Market
AL SHADER
Inside Al Shader, the fresh fish on display catches your eye as soon as you step in. You can choose from their selection or bring in fish straight from the market, and the chefs will prepare it for a small fee. Once you step inside, you’re no longer in the bustle of the market but in a space that feels warm and lived in. The ceiling is a tangle of exposed pipes, softened by rope-wrapped lights glowing like lanterns on an old dhow. Wooden booths line the walls, the kind that invite long lunches, while solid tables are neatly set with glassware, bright yellow placemats and a touch of sea-green. There’s no mistaking the theme. Nautical prints hang on the walls, a painting of a stormy sea takes centre stage at the back, and the curved wooden counter could easily be mistaken for the bow of a boat.
WHAT I ORDERED:
Tabbouleh | Fried calamari | Grilled seabass
THE SERVICE
The staff were friendly and even took me through their fresh fish selection, giving me the background of each catch. The tabbouleh was tangy and refreshing, a sharp kick of parsley and
lemon. The calamari came with two sauces, one a peri-mayonnaise so fiery it almost sent me swimming, but still moreish. Then came the grilled seabass, the dish that stole the show. It arrived cloaked in a spicy red sauce, fragrant and bold, yet not heavy enough to drown out the fish. The skin was crisp, blistered just enough to lock in the juices, while the flesh underneath was soft, buttery and almost sweet. Each forkful melted away, carrying that unmistakable taste of the sea, lifted with a smoky char from the grill. It was balanced, layered, and delicious without being overpowering. The fish still shone.
VERDICT
Choosing your fish fresh from the ice table and seeing it transformed into a dish minutes later is an experience on its own. Eating it at Al Shader takes it further. The room pulls you in, the service makes you feel at ease, and that seabass alone is reason enough to return. In a market filled with options, Al Shader is a reminder that when the fish is this fresh, simplicity wins every time.
long, you can skip the wait by having your fish cleaned in one of the restaurants.
FROM SARDINES TO SHARKS, THE MARKET HAS IT ALL
A closer look at the variety of fish on ice
Step inside Mina Fish Market and the first thing that hits you is the smell of the sea. It’s sharp, salty, and alive, but not overbearing, and you won’t leave smelling like the ocean. The stalls are a riot of coloursilver, pink, gold and blue flashing under the lights - and the fish stare back at you with eyes that seem almost curious. Every step brings a new catch, a new texture, a new flavour waiting to be discovered. From the humble sardine to the dramatic shark, the market is a celebration of the ocean, and every fish has a story to tell.
White pomfret
White pomfret, or silver pomfret, gleamed like a little treasure under the market lights. Its smooth, almost porcelain-white scales reflected the ice, and its round eyes seemed to follow me as I moved past. This can be baked, broiled, grilled, or turned into tempura.
Sherri fish
Sherri fish, also known as Spangled Emperor or Yellow Emperor, sat proudly on ice like it belonged there. Its golden scales caught the light, flecked with silver, and the eyes seemed almost curious as they stared back at me. The flesh was firm and pale, ready to be grilled, steamed, fried or BBQ’d.
Sea bream
Sea bream looked soft and elegant, pale pink and white with hints of silver along its flanks. The smell was light and clean, like a breeze off the water, promising delicate, soft flesh that can be baked, fried or steamed.
Parrot fish
Parrot fish were like a splash of tropical colour - pinks, blues, and greens shimmering across their bodies. Their round, dark eyes blinked at me from the ice, curious and a little mischievous.
King fish
King fish caught my eye with its bold, metallic sheen, scales streaked with green and blue. Its eyes were sharp, as if daring me to cook it wrong. It had a faint, salty tang in the air.
Sea bass
Sea bass looked understated next to its colourful neighbours, but its silver skin and dark, alert eyes gave it quiet confidence. Mild and meaty, it smelled faintly of salt and promised a clean, buttery flavour once cooked. Even people who shy away from fish would find themselves drawn to this one, especially when it’s pan-roasted or grilled to perfection.
Salmon
Salmon lay in thick, rich slices, orangepink and glistening, like sunlight trapped in ice. Its round eyes were dark and glossy. The smell was unmistakable, deep and sea-salty, promising a buttery, rich flavour when cooked or eaten raw.
Sardines
Sardines were small and silver, lined up like little soldiers, their shiny scales reflecting the lights of the market. Their tiny black eyes glimmered, and the smell was unmistakably fresh, salty, and a little sharp.
Sharks
The sharks stole the show. Several fishmongers proudly displayed them, their huge bodies stretched across the ice like trophies from the deep. Scales shimmered in grey, silver, and bluishblack, and their eyes were dark and glossy, almost staring straight through me. The scent of the sharks was stronger than the other fish, sharp with salt and the wildness of the ocean.

Whether it is fire-kissed steaks, zero-proof negronis, or a polished neighbourhood café, here are the city’s newest arrivals

Antonia
From one little trattoria to six buzzing restaurants in just four years, Antonia has become a name Abu Dhabi foodies know well. The homegrown Italian brand, known for its Roman-style pizza al taglio, fresh pastas and Nonnaapproved meatballs, is celebrating its fourth birthday with a new opening at Ansam, Yas Island.
The neighbourhood spot will serve the community with simple Italian favourites, quick takeaway options, and roasted meats like house-made veal porchetta. On the menu, you’ll still find Antonia’s classics, but also new dishes like roasted octopus with confit tomato, shell pasta with salmon and asparagus, and profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream drowned in hot chocolate.
Antonia has grown from its first Mamsha Al Saadiyat outpost in 2021 to five restaurants, a 250-strong team, and more than 20 awards. With its new Yas Island home, its set to keep serving the kind of food that makes people return again and again. @antonia.uae
Marcella
Yas Bay is heating up with the arrival of Marcella, a Spanish-inspired bistro built around the drama of a wood-fired grill. Expect smoky tapas-style plates for sharing, alongside in-house aged bone-in rib eye with a crust that they promise will be worth writing home about.
The 30-seat zinc-topped bar will set the mood with wines from Spain, Portugal, and Argentina, plus cocktails that are bold without being overcomplicated. Marcella is the brainchild of chef-owner Mario Loi, who already has one restaurant under his belt. Channelling his passion for fire, flavour, and easy hospitality into a space that’s warm, vibrant, and made for long nights out.
Marcella will blend Mediterranean flair with Abu Dhabi’s cosmopolitan spirit. @marcella.abudhabi
Gran Tour Emilia
Ferrari World has a new pit stop for food lovers. Gran Tour Emilia, the theme park’s latest restaurant, takes its cue from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, the birthplace of both Ferrari and some of the country’s bestloved dishes.
The menu reads like a road trip through northern Italy. There’s cappelletti stuffed with Pecorino Romano and black pepper, risotto made with aged Parmigiano Reggiano and balsamic from Modena, and a refined take on eggplant parmigiana. Tortelloni pays homage to Enzo Ferrari’s hometown, while a five tomato pasta keeps things light but full of flavour.
The interiors borrow from Ferrari design without feeling like a showroom. Warm terracotta walls, oak floors, and leather seating nod to a GT car’s cabin, while the open kitchen, designed by Angelo Po, adds a flash of Ferrari Red. Guests can watch chefs at work as they turn Emilia-Romagna staples into plates that feel both familiar and elevated.
A dedicated counter serves zero-proof cocktails, from a Dry Lambrusco to a 0.0 Negroni, giving the drinks menu as much attention as the food. Gran Tour Emilia is part restaurant, part homage to Ferrari’s heritage, and it’s now open at Yas Island’s most famous attraction.

Bar du Port
Yas Marina is getting a taste of the Riviera as Bar du Port prepares to open later this year. The French-style bar has already made its mark in Beirut, Dubai, Byblos, Doha, and Cairo, and now it is bringing the same mix of chic and playful energy to Abu Dhabi.
It is moving into the prime waterfront spot that Iris called home for more than a decade. Bar du Port promises drinks with French flair, a lively crowd, and music that keeps the night rolling. The atmosphere is glamorous without being stiff, the kind of place where jet-setters and locals cross paths over cocktails and late-night bites.
Yas Marina’s reputation as a nightlife hub makes it a natural fit. The team behind Bar du Port, AlphaMind, has three more Abu Dhabi venues in the works, but this is the one that will set the tone. Expect ‘a little luxury, a lot of fun’ before the year is out. @barduportabudhabi
The Flame Steakhouse
Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi is adding a new restaurant to its line-up. The Flame Steakhouse will serve Argentinian Asados alongside Portuguese-inspired plates, bringing smoky grills and plenty of theatre to Marina Village.
The 168-seat space will feature several live stations, so guests can expect fire, flames, and the kind of A-grade cuts Argentina is famous for. Think perfectly aged steaks, robust seasoning, and meat cooked the way it should be, over open flame.
Opening soon, The Flame Steakhouse is set to become the hotel’s go-to for long dinners, good wine and the unmistakable drama of the grill. @rixosmarinaabudhabi
Tashas
Tashas is opening its first branch in Al Ain in January next year. The new café forms part of a Dhs100 million joint venture between Arada and Tashas Group, which will see at least 10 premium dining concepts launched across the UAE and Gulf.
The Al Ain café will follow the brand’s signature approach: stylish interiors, a relaxed atmosphere, and a menu that balances everyday classics with a few indulgent plates. Tashas has built a reputation for neighbourhood dining that feels polished but approachable, and the new opening is designed to serve the growing community in the Garden City.
This marks an important step in Tashas Group’s expansion beyond Abu Dhabi and Dubai, adding Al Ain to its network while laying the groundwork for more locations in the region.

TEATRO, PARK ROTANA
Dinner, drinks, and playful flavours come together at Teatro in Park Rotana Abu Dhabi, where every bite will have you dancing in your seat
The Spot
From the moment you step through the wooden doorway and under the glowing red Teatro sign, it’s clear this is more than just another hotel restaurant. Wine barrels and wooden crates stacked along the walls whisper of indulgence, while crystal chandeliers scatter a soft shimmer across marble floors and neatly set tables. A golden mask hangs on the wall, resembling a traditional Battoulah worn by Emirati women, a subtle nod to Abu Dhabi’s roots that anchors the space with quiet elegance.
The Vibe
It’s a quiet Friday night when we visit, and while other guests are dining, Teatro still manages to feel like an exclusive hideaway. The restaurant is dimly lit, with a relaxed, intimate energy. Outside, the blue glow of the hotel pool creates the perfect backdrop for an alfresco dinner on cooler nights. It’s the kind of setting that invites conversation to linger over multiple courses.
The Food and Drinks
Teatro has made its mark with dry-aged steak and a live sushi counter, and it doesn’t disappoint. Freshly baked bread arrives first and is impossibly moreish. The Tom Yum soup follows, spicy and well-balanced, warming without
overwhelming. Tempura prawns are crisp and perfectly cooked, though the baby marrow tempura doesn’t quite sing. The signature volcano roll is a highlight of the sushi counter - handrolled and satisfying, a must-order for firsttimers. A refreshing apple sorbet acts as a palate cleanser mid-meal, a small but thoughtful touch that lifts the whole dining experience. Sides include chili and garlic sautéed broccoli and grilled asparagus sprinkled with almond flakes, simple but flavourful accompaniments. The Australian Wagyu beef tenderloin, grade 9+, is melt-in-your-mouth good, an indulgence that feels worth every dirham. Dessert brings a Valrhona chocolate fondant paired with vanilla ice cream, the kind of guilty pleasure that’s impossible to resist. Cocktails and mocktails are playful and inventive, with enough character to make ordering a part of the fun.
The
Service
Staff are attentive without hovering, offering suggestions that feel helpful
rather than rehearsed. There’s a rhythm to the service that keeps the meal flowing without pressure.
What to Order
❑ Tom Yum soup
❑ Volcano roll
❑ Wagyu beef tenderloin
What’s On the Bill
For a three-course meal with drinks, expect to pay around Dhs 450-500 for two.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
The food at Teatro is so good it’ll have you dancing in your seat, the setting is intimate, and the touches of Abu Dhabi in the décor make it feel special rather than generic. It’s the kind of place where a dinner feels like a small celebration.

ASH & OAK
Abu Dhabi’s new lounge blends smoke, song and slow sips in style
The Spot
Abu Dhabi’s latest arrival, Ash & Oak sits inside the Marriott Hotel Al Forsan. It feels like a secret rendezvous where the night unfolds with the glamour of a spy thriller. The moment you step inside you could be in Havana. The room is dim, velvet armchairs pull you in, and the air is laced with cigar smoke. On one side a singer seranades guests while on the other a cigar roller works with quiet precision, his hands moving like choreography.
The Vibe
The space hums with music, laughter and the clink of glasses. Wood-panelled walls, low lighting and plush seating create a rhythm that feels both intimate and cinematic.
Food and Drinks
Bar snacks and small plates are perfectly fine, but Ash & Oak’s strength is in its drinks and cigars. Start the night with a classic cocktail like an Old Fashioned,
which arrives under a soft curl of smoke. Martinis gleam under the lights and the Negroni delivers just the right bite of bitterness. The Glenmorangie 18-year-old is a treat and a must-try for anyone who enjoys taking their time. Cigars from the world’s most iconic regions rest in custom humidors, ready to be paired with aged rums, silky whiskies, or cocktails that highlight their character.
The Service
Service has a leisurely pace so settle in and let the night unfold. Staff know their cigars as well as their spirits and guide newcomers with ease and just enough charm to make waiting feel part of the experience.
What’s On the Bill
Budget around Dhs 250 per person for cocktails and bar bites. Rare whiskies and premium cigars push the total higher, but for a night of jazz, smoke, and sophistication, it feels fair.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Ash & Oak is a lounge with presence. Jazz, cigars, and cocktails converge in a setting that feels timeless, polished, and deeply transportive.

FROM ONION TEARS TO CULINARY TRIUMPH
Executive Chef Muna Al Mansoori’s journey proves that passion and pride make the perfect recipe
In Abu Dhabi’s Fairmont Bab Al Bahr lobby, children giggle as they chase each other across the marble floor. The sound of running water blends with classical music. The hotel’s executive chef, Muna Al Mansoori, walks in wearing a black embroidered abaya and headscarf.
We head to Mazaj Bab Al Bahr, the Mediterranean restaurant, where Arabic music drifts from hidden speakers. She orders tabbouleh, hummus, and sautéed shrimp tossed in garlic, fresh cilantro, and lemon juice.
Her story begins in 2013, when she joined a group of women training as chefs, stepping into kitchens that are still dominated by men. She starts at the bottom, peeling vegetables and hauling 50kg sacks of onions until her arms burn. “When I started this, I didn’t know what it takes to be a chef. It’s long hours. I started out by cutting 50kg bags of onions and I was crying while peeling them. It was really hard, but I love it. That made me strong,” she says.
Today, she is the executive chef at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, where she has led
the kitchen for the past six years. Her rise is marked by hard work, grit, and a desire to share Emirati culture through food.
“The UAE is not only for the local people, the UAE is for all people. That comes from Sheikh Zayed, our founding father. Food is culture, and we have a culture. So I collaborate with people not only to learn but also to share my culture and our cuisine,” she says.
Her story is stitched into the Emirates themselves. Her mother is from Sharjah, she grew up in Ras Al Khaimah, and she now calls Abu Dhabi her home. It is the reason her black chef’s jacket has the UAE flag sewn into it.
“I want to show the world Emirati hospitality. This is how I was raised. My country is the one who made me Chef Muna. I first found my country and after that I found myself, and now I’m trying to help others. That’s why I will always wear my flag on my jacket.”
She has fought for her place in the kitchen and, in doing so,
WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER
opened doors for other women to follow. Chef Muna is the first internationally certified Emirati chef and has represented the UAE in global competitions. She has won medals and serves as a certified international coach and esteemed judge.
“When I started, there were no women chefs in hotels. Today there are many. That makes me happy.”
Beyond the kitchen, she appears on Abu Dhabi TV and Al Sharjah Channel. She is also passionate about mentoring emerging chefs and sharing Emirati cuisine with wider audiences.
The conversation turns to Emirati cuisine and I nervously admit that I have tried harees before and didn’t really enjoy it. Chef Muna looks surprised, then smiles, as if I had just thrown down a challenge. She explains the slow, careful cooking process that turns wheat and meat into the creamy dish. Then she winks and says: “You haven’t really had harees until you’ve tried mine.”
Today, however, is not a harees day. Instead, I try her majboos, another Emirati signature. When the chicken majboos arrives, she shares that it’s her mother’s recipe, a dish layered with cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaves, dried black lemon, turmeric, and cumin.
“My mother taught me how to cook, it’s my favourite and people love it. With majboos it feels like you are at home. I want people to feel like they are at home when they eat my majboos,” she says.
The aroma drifts across the table like a memory you did not know you had. For Chef Muna, every dish is her heritage plated with pride, her story served with spice, and her country carried into every bite.
TAKE THE MIC, OWN THE NIGHT
Whether you want a private booth or an audience, Abu Dhabi has a mic waiting for you at these karaoke spots
There’s something about getting up in a room full of strangers and belting out your favourite song that just feels right. It’s about having fun, forgetting how you sound, and being the star of your own concert. Abu Dhabi has something for everyone - from private rooms to pub nights, the capital’s karaoke scene is as varied as the playlists. I did my vocal exercises and visited a few karaoke spots, one off-tune hit at a time.
Mercure Karaoke Bar and Restaurant
From the outside, it’s a quiet hotel bar. Inside, it’s where you and your crew transform into a questionable version of the Backstreet Boys. This one felt like stumbling across a hidden treasure, mostly because it’s so tucked away on the fourth floor of the Novel Hotel. Each of the five karaoke rooms is fitted with leather couches, microphones, tambourines and multicoloured lights that instantly set the mood. The rooms come in different sizes, so whether it’s a small crew or a full squad of 15, there’s space for everyone to sing badly together.

TOK Karaoke Booth and Studio
Finding this spot was the first challenge. I felt like I’d accidentally signed up for a solo mallathon through Al Wahda Mall, but once I found it, the effort was worth it. Here, your experience starts with a photoshoot. Grab a wig, oversized sunnies, a funky hat, or even a Squid Game mask, then take some selfies before it’s time to sing. The six private karaoke booths are small but electric, with flashing lights, two microphones and even a tambourine because why not be your own backup band. Inside the booth you forget you’re in a mall, especially when you’re halfway through Luther Vandross or a K-pop track. My rendition of “Golden” was deserving of a Grammy and a cameo in the next K-pop film.

STAGE INVADERS
A smashing, swooning, stadium-shaking month ahead
If your idea of a good time involves face-melting riffs, orchestral grandeur, or swooning under arena lights to smooth Spanish ballads, you’re in luck. Abu Dhabi is about to explode with sound this October as an eclectic mix of musical heavyweights hits the capital…
[OCT 9] SMASHING PUMPKINS
If the ‘90s had a soundtrack for teenage angst, it was probably penned, shredded, and howled by The Smashing Pumpkins. Emerging from Chicago in the early ‘90s, this band, helmed by the ever-enigmatic Billy Corgan, quickly became the poster children for alt-rock’s expansive, moody, and epic sound. With their blend of crushing guitars, dreamy synths, and poetic angst, they crafted entire emotional landscapes. Their holy trinity of albums –Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness – contain everything you want in rock: blistering riffs, atmospheric synths, gut-punching lyrics, and moments of pure, unfiltered catharsis.
Fast forward to today, and The Smashing Pumpkins are still cranking up the volume and pushing boundaries. The
band’s latest ambitious project, ATUM – A Rock Opera in Three Acts, showcases their undying commitment to innovation and storytelling through sound.
They’re currently touring this new material, but fear not, classic Pumpkins gems like Today, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Zero, 1979, and Ava Adore remain staples of their live shows, much to the delight of old-school fans and new recruits alike. And if you’re in Abu Dhabi, mark your calendars for October 9, when the band rolls into town to deliver a night of nostalgia, new tunes, and unmistakable rock magic.

ANDRÉ RIEU
Mozart and Liberace might have had a love child who adored sequins, swooning crowds, and swoon-worthy violins – enter André Rieu. The Dutch violin virtuoso, conductor, and showman has redefined classical music for the masses, transforming the waltz into a glittering, globe-trotting spectacle.
Rieu’s concerts are part royal ball, part Las Vegas extravaganza. Grandmas adore him. So do date-night couples and classical buffs. His Johann Strauss Orchestra is as famous for its lush sound as it is for its joyful, tearjerking, champagne-popping vibe. It’s classical music, but not as you know it.
He’s sold over 40 million albums, fills stadiums like a rock star, and still manages to make every audience feel like they’ve just been invited to an intimate Viennese soirée. And now, Abu Dhabi is in for a treat, as Rieu brings his inimitable magic to the UAE once more. But he’s no stranger to our shores; this follows the record-breaking success of his 2024 Abu Dhabi performance, which drew 12,000 attendees and set a new record for the largest audience for a classical concert in UAE history. His return promises even more sparkle, humour, and heart. The luxury life of a classical rockstar
Inside André Rieu’s world of opulence and orchestras
He might be the King of the Waltz, but André Rieu lives like true royalty. From flying private to performing with palatial stage sets, here’s a peek into five of his most extravagant possessions:
1. £7 million Stradivarius
This 1692 violin is a statement. Warm-toned, historic, and handled with reverence, it’s Rieu’s weapon of choice.
2. His own 15th-century castle
Nestled in Maastricht, Huis de Torentjes is Rieu’s lavish residence, complete with chandeliers, tapestries, and even portraits of himself and his wife. Modesty? Not quite.
3. Private jet + orchestra convoy
Rieu tours with a private plane, five tour buses, and eight trucks.
4. A life-size palace stage
He once recreated Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace (fountains, façade, and all) for his tour, a dazzling move that cost £24 million and nearly bankrupted him. Go big or go baroque.
5. A butterfly-filled orangery
Behind the grandeur, a peaceful escape: his tropical greenhouse houses butterflies, exotic plants, and tranquil vibes.
[OCT 21] SCORPIONS
They’ve rocked us like a hurricane for over five decades, and they’re not done yet. Scorpions, Germany’s loudest export since Oktoberfest, are bringing their anthemic hard rock to Abu Dhabi this month, and fans better brace themselves for a night of leather, lighters, and legendary riffs.
Formed in 1965, the Scorpions are true rock survivors. With global hits like Wind of Change, Still Loving You, and of course, Rock You Like a Hurricane, they’ve sold over 100 million records and inspired generations of headbangers, romantics, and air guitarists alike. Their sound is big, bold, and melodic. Expect power ballads that make stadiums weep, and solos sharp enough to cut steel. But don’t let the decades fool you. These guys still tour like titans, and their shows are full-blown spectacles, complete with pyrotechnics, screaming guitars, and Klaus Meine’s unmistakable voice, still going strong. Younger fans now worship them for their raw authenticity, while longtime devotees show up in vintage tees and devil horns, ready to relive their youth, louder and prouder than ever. So yes, the Scorpions are heading to Abu Dhabi, and no, they’re not here for a quiet night in. Scorpions Vs Scorpions
Venom, armour, and the ability to stop you in your tracks.
You wouldn’t think a desertdwelling arachnid and a German hard rock band would have much in common, but you’d be wrong. Turns out, both Scorpions know how to bring the sting.
Deadly when provoked: Whether it’s a surprise sting or a screaming guitar solo, both know how to make their presence felt.
Iconic silhouettes: One has pincers and a curved tail. The other has teased hair, flying Vs, and leather. Both look unforgettable in the dark.
Armour-plated: The creature’s got a natural exoskeleton. Meanwhile, the band has layers of studded leather and rock ’n’ roll attitude.
Thriving for decades: Scorpions have crawled through prehistory. The band’s been rocking since the ‘60s, and still fills arenas.
Loved & feared worldwide: One’s a symbol of danger. The other is a symbol of epic guitar solos, power ballads, and latenight anthems.

Few pop artists have navigated the mainstream with the quiet consistency of Enrique Iglesias. While trends have come and gone, Iglesias has held his ground not by reinventing the wheel, but by refining his version of it: sleek, emotional, and built for global appeal.
Since breaking through in the late ’90s with Spanish-language ballads and crossover chart smashes like Bailamos, Iglesias has played the long game. His catalogue is vast, peppered with dance-pop anthems (Tonight I’m Lovin’ You), brooding slow-burners (Hero), and collaborations that span genres and generations. He’s worked with everyone from Whitney Houston to Pitbull, proving his adaptability without ever chasing relevance too desperately.
His strength lies in his songwriting instinct, hooks that stick, melodies that lean just enough into melancholy, and a vocal delivery that’s more intimate than flashy. It’s this unshowy charisma that’s earned him a global fanbase and over 180 million records sold.
Now, after a period out of the spotlight, he’s back in the capital for one night only, a rare chance to see a polished pop veteran in his element. The set promises deep cuts, massive hits, and the kind of tightly produced spectacle that’s increasingly hard to come by.
Enrique Iglesias might not dominate headlines, but in the world of global pop, he’s quietly built an empire. One night might not be enough, but for fans, it’s a reminder that consistency, craft, and a well-placed chorus still count for something.

Enrique Iglesias’ greatest collabs
Here are five of his most iconic team-ups
1. Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull –I Like It (2010)
Arguably the ultimate Enrique/ Pitbull team-up. EDM synths, a Lionel Richie sample, and pure, reckless club energy. A peak 2010 moment in one track.
2. Enrique Iglesias ft. Wisin & Yandel – No Me Digas Que No (2011)
Before every pop star was jumping on reggaetón, Enrique was already in the mix. This one’s all heat, heartbreak, and hips.
3. Enrique Iglesias ft. Whitney Houston – Could I Have This Kiss Forever (2000)
Yes, it happened. Yes, it was kind of iconic. A smooth, late-night duet that paired two powerhouses in peak slow-jam territory.
4. Enrique Iglesias ft. Sean Paul – Bailando (2014)
The bilingual smash that took over the world. Dancehall meets flamenco guitars meets Enrique whisper-singing about fire. Still huge.
5. Enrique Iglesias ft. Ludacris & DJ Frank E – Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You) (2010) Blatant. Brazen. Big. The NSFW version was even bigger. Enrique goes full club villain with Luda riding shotgun.

STEREOPHONICS
Date: October 29
Venue: Coca-Cola Arena
Genre: Gritty British Rock
Best Known For: Dakota, Maybe Tomorrow
Twenty-five years on from Performance and Cocktails, Stereophonics are still the sharpest Welsh rock export since Manic Street Preachers. Frontman Kelly Jones’s gravelly growl remains a force of nature and if there’s a more reliable hit machine in UK rock, we’re yet to see it. Live, they deliver a tight, chest-thumping set built on tracks like Dakota, Maybe Tomorrow, Just Looking, and Bartender and the Thief. Whether you were there in 1999 or just catching up now, their gigs are masterclasses in anthemic storytelling, big choruses, heart-on-sleeve lyrics, and no pretence. This Dubai date is a rare Middle East stop, and with the band still packing arenas back home, expect a fired-up crowd of loyal expats. Worth the trip? If you like your rock straight-up and no-frills, this is a no-brainer.

DAVID GRAY
Date: October 31
Venue: Dubai Opera
Genre: Soulful Acoustic/Pop-Folk
Best Known For: Babylon, This Year’s Love
David Gray might not seem the most obvious Halloween pick, but if soulful melancholy is your vibe, Dubai Opera is the place to be on October 31. Twenty-five years since White Ladder broke the mould for bedroom-recorded albums, Gray’s voice, all fragile, weathered, unmistakable, still tugs at every last thread of your heartstrings.
You can expect far more than Babylon and This Year’s Love, too. Dig into the setlist and you’ll find deep cuts from Life in Slow Motion and his later records that show how he’s evolved beyond that ‘acoustic guy from the early 2000s’ tag. Expect piano-led epics, acoustic intimacy, and maybe even a few stripped-back reinventions of the classics. Worth the trip? If your idea of a night out includes goosebumps and a reflective drive back home, absolutely.

GREASE IS THE WORD
Meet the stars bringing Rydell High to Dubai
Whether you first fell for Sandy and Danny under the flicker of a drive-in movie screen or danced to “Greased Lightnin” at a school disco, Grease is a cultural juggernaut that refuses to quit. Yes, the 1978 film (and the original ‘70s stage musical before it) still sparks debate – Sandy’s makeover, the gender politics, the questionable lyrics – but
the music star power is undeniably electric. Now, a brand-new production in collaboration with MAC Global and People Entertainment Group, is revving its engines for a Dubai debut, promising all the charm, camp, and choreography of the classic, turbocharged for a 21stcentury crowd.
With hits like Summer Nights and You’re the One That I Want as irresistible
as ever, and a fresh cast set to bring Rydell High to life on the Dubai Opera stage, it’s time to dust off your leather jacket, slick your hair back, and prepare to hand-jive your heart out.
Before opening night, we sat down with the stars of Grease – the ones stepping into the iconic saddle shoes and skintight trousers – to talk roles, rehearsals, and revving up for Dubai.
Christopher Foley
Plays: Danny Zuko
What do you love most about stepping into Danny Zuko’s shoes each night?
I love that it’s such an iconic and instantly recognisable role, inspired by so many legends like James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Elvis. I’ve always been drawn to the 50s and 60s as an era, so it feels like a real privilege to step into Danny’s shoes every night.
How do you bring your own twist to such an iconic role while still staying true to the original?
I draw on my own memories and experiences from school. The ups and downs of relationships, the embarrassment when things don’t go right, and the challenge of navigating friendships while still figuring out who you are. Those feelings help me bring something personal and authentic to Danny.
What’s your favourite on-stage moment as Danny, and why? Summer Nights is always a highlight. As Danny, I get to show
Amelia Colfar
Plays: Sandra (Sandy) Dee
What draws you to Sandy as a character, and how has your connection with her grown during the tour?
I think what draws me to Sandy as a character is her confidence in who she is. I think we watch Grease and believe Sandy only gains real confidence at the end with her transformation. Yet, from the very beginning, she stands her ground for what she believes in. I think she is a perfect example of women conforming their own truths about themselves on their own terms. I feel connected to this as a young woman growing up in this world. Being a young woman can be hard to navigate, but Sandy shows it’s okay to figure yourself out on your own terms.
Sandy goes through a huge transformation. How do you approach that shift on stage?
Sandy’s transformation, for me, is her taking back her own power. I think all young women can relate to this in some
off in front of the boys while still revealing all the emotions he felt for Sandy that summer. As an actor, it’s a brilliant balance of comedy, bravado, and genuine feeling –an exciting moment to play.
Do you have any pre-show rituals that help you get into character?
I’ve developed a quirky habit of counting the teeth on my comb before going on –it’s strangely calming, almost like a form of meditation. And of course, putting on the leather jacket instantly adds a layer of confidence.
What are you most looking forward to doing or seeing while you’re in Dubai?
It’s my first time in Dubai, so I’m really excited. I don’t have one specific thing on my list because there seems to be so much to experience. I feel safe in the knowledge that whatever I do, it’s going to be unforgettable.
way. There comes a point when we want to become our own woman and have our own complete identity. We are constantly changing and finding new versions of ourselves. I am not the person I was five years ago and I am sure in five years’ time I will also be different in many ways. When on stage I approach this through these personal experiences.
What’s your favourite musical number to perform and why?
My favourite musical number in the show is Summer Lovin’. I love it because it’s at the top of the show with most of the company together. It’s an iconic song that everyone knows from the movie and we get to have the most fun doing it.
Do you have a pre-show routine that gets you into Sandy’s mindset?
Before any show the most important things to me are to be warmed up, fuelled, and in a focused mindset. I use the time after a company warm up to do my makeup and look through any notes so they are fresh in mind. I also like to chat to my cast mates. It’s
never good to sit and overthink how a show is going to go, so chatting to everyone puts us all at ease.
Is there anything in Dubai you’re especially excited to explore, be it food, sights, or shopping?
I am so excited to see it all! Dubai looks incredible and I want to squeeze in seeing as much of it as I can in between shows. I’m also very much a shopaholic so I must go for a look around the mall at some point!

SONNY FODERA IS BRINGING THE BEAT
Dance like only the skyline is watching CULTURE // SONNY FODERA
There are DJs you hear once and never forget - Sonny Fodera is one of them.
The Australian-born house favourite has built his name on keeping the crowd moving and singing all night. This October, he’s bringing that magic to Dubai as Bohemia Presents returns with another season of big names, big beats, and beachfront vibes at Bohemia Beach Club.
Fodera’s sound is the kind that makes you feel alive on the dancefloor. His tracks Always Gonna Be ft. Alex Mills and
Somedays ft. Jazzy & D.O.D are my personal favourites, non-stop playing in the car, and are the kind you can’t help but sing and dance along to. Honestly, the beat is so catchy that you just want to have them on repeat, and I’ve even seen Somedays hit off on TikTok and reels, which makes total sense as it’s impossible not to move to it. His music is all about fun, energetic vibes, and keeping you dancing from the first drop to the last.
Over the last decade, Sonny has gone from underground remixer to global headline act, running his own Solotoko label and lighting up clubs from Ibiza to London. His style is instantly recognisable - infectious house beats that are both uplifting and exhilarating, with just the right mix of groove and melody to make every track feel like a mini celebration.
But here in Dubai, the setting couldn’t be more perfect. Imagine this: a
beachfront stage, the sea breeze rolling in, and Sonny dropping track after track as the sun sets over Palm Jumeirah. The vibe is all festival energy and pure house beats, with the marina skyline and sea breeze setting the scene. With his lively stage presence, you know it’s going to be a night where every beat lands and every song feels like your new favourite.
For Dubai’s nightlife, Sonny’s gig is a big one. Bohemia has fast become the city’s go-to for world-class DJs, and this season is stacked - with names like Robin Schulz, Lost Frequencies, Purple Disco Machine, and more lined up from October 4 to November 29. But mark your calendar: Sonny Fodera owns the night on October 25.
Sonny Fodera Live in Dubai
When: Friday, October 25, from 5pm
Where: Bohemia Beach Club, Palm Jumeirah
Tickets: Dhs150 for ladies (incl. one drink), Dhs200 for gents (incl. one drink), VIP tables from Dhs650
Two epic retreats from UAE experts you’ll want to escape to this season
This season, two UAE-based wellness powerhouses are heading abroad, and they’re inviting you to come along for the ride (and the run, and the yoga, and possibly a dance under the stars). From soul-soaked sunsets in Zanzibar to surf-splashed mornings in Sri Lanka, here’s your definitive guide to two seriously good retreats.
REBIRTH BY WHAT’S NEXT
Where: Zanzibar
When: October 24 to 26
How much: Dhs679 to Dhs1,928 per person (including breakfast) depending on length of stay, excl flights and transfers Best for: The creatively curious, musicloving soul-seekers, and anyone who wants their wellness with a side of Afrohouse beats and artisan markets.
Waking up to the sound of waves, sipping turmeric tea in a breezy boutique hotel, and easing into the day with intentionsetting and movement – Rebirth by What’s Next is where wellness meets celebration, with a generous side of soul. Forget rigid detox schedules and silent meditation marathons. This is more like a spiritual house party… with really great lighting.
Curated by Dubai’s own creative force and event maestro Isabella Murgu, this three-day gathering on Zanzibar’s southeast coast blends movement, music, and meaning into one seamless, sunsoaked experience. Mornings begin with grounding practices and mindful rituals, afternoons invite adventure, and evenings unfold into a flow of organic soundscapes and barefoot dance floors. Local musicians
meet international DJs, and a creative market brims with handmade crafts and cultural flavour – an immersive tribute to the island’s vibrant spirit.
The setting – the serene and effortlessly stylish Sharazād Boutique Hotel – feels like a place time forgot, where the pace slows, the sea heals, and the mind finally exhales.
It’s all about reconnection. To self. To others. To something bigger. Think less ‘retreat,’ more soulful reset, a reminder that transformation doesn’t always require stillness. Sometimes, it starts with movement.

GO TO ZANZIBAR IF…
❑ You want meaning, music, and movement, not just muscle fatigue.
❑ You’re craving deeper connection, not just reps and routines.
❑ Your ideal itinerary includes guided meditations and dancing till late.
The idea of a soulful creative market and DJ sunset ritual makes your heart skip a beat.

MAKAHIYA X JUMEIRAH JOHN’S RUN CLUB
Where: Sri Lanka
When: November 8 to 13
How much: Dhs5,999 (in a shared room), excl flights and transfers Best for: The high-energy, let’s-do-it-all types who believe cold plunges are a personality trait and find joy in both early morning runs and postsurf banana pancakes.
If the Zanzibar crowd is sipping ceremonial cacao by candlelight, the Sri Lanka crew is doing sunrise sprints followed by a protein shake and some well-earned pool time.
Over six days on Sri Lanka’s sun-drenched coast, this retreat delivers exactly the kind of highenergy reset that leaves you glowing (and possibly a little sore, in the best way). Hosted by the ever-popular Makahiya Fitness and Dubai’s own Jumeirah John’s Run Club, this is a no-fuss, fullbody experience built for the movement-loving crowd.
Daily runs, strength workouts, yoga flows, and surf lessons form the backbone of the week, with community dinners rounding out the rhythm. Ice baths make an appearance (of course), as do plenty of laid-back moments for recovery.
Set at Makahiya’s boutique fitness hotel, a sleek, mountain-top hideaway surrounded by jungle, the vibe is warm, welcoming, and totally unpretentious. Come with a friend or show up solo, shared rooms keep things social, and there’s always someone around who’s equally excited for a 6am run and a post-workout smoothie. For more info, visit @jumeirahjohnsrunningclub
HEAD TO SRI LANKA IF…
❑ You’re the type to say “Let’s go for a quick jog” and actually mean it.
❑ You love the endorphin buzz of back-to-back activities (and maybe a cheeky post-workout nap).
❑ You want to improve your surf skills, do yoga, and still have time to sunbathe.
❑ You’re all about the crew, the camaraderie, and the challenge.
Back on the road as Abu Dhabi hits its stride
From sunrise along the Corniche to twilight loops on Yas, these Abu Dhabi routes make the most of the cool change
Good news, capital crew, October means softer sunrises, breezier evenings, and runs that don’t feel like a survival sport. If you’ve been faithful to the treadmill all summer like I have , here’s your gentle nudge back outdoors, with routes for every pace, mood, and playlist.
01
Hudayriyat Island loops
With car-free waterfront paths, parks, and workout zones, Hudayriyat is built for movement. Stitch a loop around Marsana and the waterfront parks, add gentle bridge rises for variety, and finish with a cooldown on the sand.
Why it’s great: Wide paths, zero road crossings and plenty of parking.
Try: Six to 12km mixing waterfront and bridge segments.
02
Al Maryah Island promenade
Loop the waterfront around The Galleria and Cleveland Clinic for skyline reflections without the drama of traffic. Early evening is lively but never hectic, because that’s the Abu Dhabi way of life.
Why it’s great: Smooth paving, glitzy views and easy parking, sounds like a win.
Try: Four to 7km with short tempo bursts along the straightaways.
03
Eastern Mangroves promenade
Skirt the mangroves on a gentle, mostly flat path where the soundtrack is paddles and bird calls. Shade pockets help if you’re running late morning.
Why it’s great: Peaceful, pretty and kind on the mind.
Try: Four to 6km easy effort; keep it conversational.
04
Al Bateen to the bridge
Start near Al Bateen Beach and aim for the bridge views as the city lights come on. Quiet streets meet waterfront serenity and a chef’s kiss at sunset.
Why it’s great: Low traffic, big sky and small thrills.
Try: Five to 7km steady with a final kilometre push.
Abu Dhabi Corniche
A wide, well-lit promenade runs the length of the Corniche with beach showers, cafés, and plenty of benches for pre or post run stretches. Go at first light for sherbet skies, but after dark works just as well thanks to solid lighting.
Why it’s great: Flat and scenic with facilities everywhere.
Try: Five to 10km out-and-back, and watch the headwind on the return.
Desert edge at Al Wathba
Trade pavements for firm sand paths at sunrise for flamingo-pink skies and meditative miles. Go with a buddy, water, and a cap.
Why it’s great: Joint-friendly and soul-soothing with spectacular dawns.
Try: Five to 10km easy; watch footing and enjoy the quiet surrounds.
WHEN TO RUN (AND FEEL GOOD DOING IT)
Best windows: Sunrise and after sunset. October warms fast by mid-morning.
Hydrate & shade: Carry a soft flask or make sure your route is past fountains. SPF still matters.
Build back gently: If you’ve been indoors, increase distance and intensity gradually. There’s no need ro rush just yet.
Be seen: Light kit, a clip light for late finishes, and eyes up on shared paths.
Yas Island routes
Run the marina boardwalk, add Yas Bay’s promenade for a breezy extension, or time your week to join the free community nights that open Yas Marina Circuit to runners and cyclists. Nothing like ticking off kilometres on a Formula 1 track.
Why it’s great: Destination atmosphere, perfect surfaces, and your parking is sorted.
Try: Five to 8km marina and bay combo with track nights for tempos.
Umm Al Emarat Park
Leafy paths, gentle rollers, bathrooms, and water on tap which is great for progression runs or a social jog that somehow turns into coffee. Why it’s great: Central, green and family-friendly.
Try: Three to 6km of linked inner loops building pace each lap.
First week back? Pick the route that makes you want to linger, let the cooler air do its quiet magic, and remember: the win isn’t just running farther, it’s loving the run again. 05 06 07 08 09
Mamsha Al Saadiyat
A silky promenade along Soul Beach with public showers and cafés is perfect for steady-state runs where you lock a pace and let the view do the rest.
Why it’s great: Big horizons, cushy underfoot and great sunset photo-ops.
Try: Five to 8km out-and-back, and add pickups between lifeguard towers.

South Africa
THREE CORNERS OF South Africa, ONE LOVE TRIANGLE
Sea, city, summit: A South African’s three-city playbook
WORDS: LIAM JOYCE
People often ask me where to begin with South Africa, as if a country this big could be neatly folded into a single postcard. My answer is always a triangle. Durban for warm seas and sweeter-than-youremember mangoes, Cape Town for mountains that photobomb every moment and wines that turn lunches into afternoons, and Johannesburg for a heartbeat you feel in your chest, where stories and skylines compete for your attention. It’s a loop you can fly in a week, or drift through over two, and it shows you three different moods of the same place, like hearing a favourite song in three keys. It’s the kind of love triangle you want to be involved in.
DURBAN:
Where the ocean says “just jump in”
Durban, often referred to as the ‘Miami of Africa’, is a city that greets you with a sun-warmed shoulder and asks why you’re wearing shoes. The Indian Ocean here isn’t a concept, it’s an invitation. Walk the Golden Mile, a famous beachfront promenade, at first light, and you’ll see the whole city stretching. Surfers shrugging into wetsuits, aunties power-walking in floppy hats, kids trying to convince parents that breakfast can wait, and labradors modeling through the activity. If you’re brave, rent a surfboard at North Beach and hit the waves. If you’re honest, order a coffee at Durban Beach Café (@durbanbeachcafe) or Café Jiran (@the_jiran_restaurant) and offer enthusiastic commentary from the sand while tanning. For those who enjoy living life on the edge, take a trip to Ushaka Marine World (@ushakamarineworld) where you can go shark diving or zip line over shark infested waters.
Food in Durban doesn’t whisper, it beams. Follow your nose to a bunny chow, a loaf hollowed out and filled with curry, and accept the fact that there is no elegant way to eat it, only joyful ones. Try out House of Curries (@hoc_florida), Billal’s Cuisine Windermere (@billalcuisinewindermere) or Solly Manjra (@sollymanjracatereres).
Duck into spice shops for masalas that perfume your suitcase for months, and when the sun leans west, head to the city’s countless nighttime strips, like Florida Road in Morningside or Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga.
If the coast makes you restless in the best way, drive inland along the Midlands Meander - all farm stalls and potters and the kind of cafés where the milk still knows the name of the cow. Make a stop at Brahman Hills (@brahmanhills) for lunch or enjoy fresh farm food and the best pies (this is no exaggeration) in the country at The Windmills (@thewindmillskitchen).
During winter, this area gets snow, so pack warmly.
Keep going and the Drakensberg Mountains rise in front of you. These aren’t just the highest mountains in South Africa, they are magnificent, old, and very good at reminding you to put your phone away. Durban never feels in a hurry and that’s its magic. You stop trying to ‘fit things in’ and find yourself simply living, that’s the Durban way of life.
Drakensberg Mountains
Umhlanga Pier
CAPE TOWN:
A mountain, a table, and a very long lunch
Cape Town is shameless about her angles, and who can blame her? Table Mountain, which is recognised as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, parks itself in the background of every plan, and even the most routine errand turns into a moment. Go up early if the cableway (@tablemountainca) is open (weather conditions play an important role here), and watch the city waking below, harbour cranes stretching, joggers dotting the promenade, the Atlantic winking an icy dare. It’s a view that will never leave your memory. Later, take the long way round on Chapman’s Peak Drive where every bend is a reason to pull over and make everyone in the car say “wow” in unison. This drive on the Atlantic Coast between Hout Bay and Noordhoek in the Cape Peninsula is one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world.
Then let the road loosen your shoulders as you roll into the Winelands. Stellenbosch has gravitas and gables; Franschhoek wears her beauty lightly and pairs it with pastries. Both have award winning wine farms that offer generous tastings, theatrical views, and lunch that has a way of drifting into golden hour without apology. I highly recommend booking a ticket on the Wine Tram, it’s the best way to explore the Winelands. From farms like Vrede en Lust Wine Estate (@vredeenlust), Plaisir Wine Estate (@plaisirwineestate) and Klein Goederust Wine Farm (@klein_goederust), you will get to taste all of the grapes South Africa has to offer.
If your romance requires sea air, head to Kalk Bay for harbour-front fish and the theatre of fishing boats coming in, then shuffle along to greet the Boulders Penguin Colony (sanparks.org) who behave like tiny celebrities late for a red carpet. On a still evening, Signal Hill glows with the most beautiful sunsets - pack a small jacket, snacks, and the person who makes your jokes funnier.
Cape Town can put on a moody tablecloth (that cloud cap) without warning, which is half the charm. Pack a layer, say yes to a tasting flight you can’t pronounce, and let the city set the tempo. You won’t win, you’ll enjoy losing.
Foodies will be happy to know that the city eats as beautifully as it looks. Start on Bree Street where clever chefs turn small plates into long conversations at spots like Villa 47 (@villa47onbree) and one of my favourite city gems, Vixi Social House (@vixi_social_house). Wander through Woodstock for markets, murals, and coffee that takes itself seriously in all the right ways. Spoilt for choice, try out The Old Biscuit Mill Market (@oldbiscuitmill) and The Neighbourgoods Market (@neighbourgoodsmarket).

JOHANNESBURG:
The paragraph on the back of the postcard
If Cape Town is the photo, Joburg is the caption: busy, bold, and absolutely itself. Start with context at Constitution Hill (@constitution_hill), a UNESCO World Heritage Site where a former prison now houses South Africa’s highest court. The architecture is beautiful, the stories aren’t always easy, but that’s the point as you step out understanding the country better than when you walked in. Take a guided cycle through Soweto, the largest township in the country, and along Vilakazi Street, and you’ll learn that history here is not a museum label but something people still tell with their hands.
Then slip into the daily rhythm. Maboneng (mabonengprecinct.com) pops with art, food stalls, and the particular energy of a city that builds-and-rebuilds itself in public. 44 Stanley (@44_stanelyavenue) is the exhale, leafy courtyards, indie shops, and even a great haircut if you need to feel brand new. And because I promised shopping that tests your suitcase, make time for Sandton City (@sandtoncitymall) and Nelson Mandela Square (@nelsonmandelasquare) in the heart of Sandton, Africa’s richest square mile.
It’s gleaming, unapologetically glossy, and full of both global names and South African labels you’ll be smuggling back with triumphant justification.
Joburg rewards curiosity. Wander Braamfontein for galleries and rooftop viewpoints; book dinner where the chef is cooking loud, confident flavours and listen to the way strangers on neighbouring tables join your conversation and you mysteriously don’t mind. People will tell you to be street-smart, and you should be, but they forget to mention how generous the city is when you meet it halfway. Smile, ask questions, keep your phone zipped, and you’ll find a warmth that lingers.
WHEN TO GO?
South Africa flips the Northern Hemisphere - November to March is peak summer, Durban shines and gets humid, Cape Town sparkles, and Joburg twinkles. May to August brings cold days to Joburg and Cape Town while Durban keeps things cool.
SMALL SUGGESTIONS, BIG RETURNS
Eat with curiosity. Let Cape Malay spices, Zulu staples and ambitious tasting menus tell you where you are. Always say hello; South Africans will give you directions, a restaurant tip, and occasionally unsolicited life advice that turns out to be useful, but say hello first. Leave literal space in your luggage for wine and ceramics, and metaphorical space for plans you didn’t know you had like an extra night because the view is ridiculous or a detour because someone said “you must.”
You’ll return home a little sun-freckled with a suitcase that closes only if you sit on it and a sense that South Africa didn’t just show you places, it introduced you to moods. And if you catch yourself checking flight prices right now, that’s not restlessness, that’s the triangle doing its work.
STITCHING THE TRIANGLE
You can do this loop quickly or let it breathe. With seven to nine days, fly into Joburg for a couple of nights of museums and markets, hop to Cape Town for landscapes and long lunches, then exhale in Durban where the sea does the heavy lifting. If you have 10 to 14 days, add a night in the Winelands or a Drakensberg lodge, and if a safari is non-negotiable, swap a Durban day for an easy add-on to Pilanesberg (@pilanesberg_) or Madikwe (@madikwe_game_reserve) from Joburg. Domestic flights are frequent with carriers like South African Airways (@flysaa), Flysafair (@flysafairza), Airlink (@fly_airlink) and Cem Air (@flycemair).

IRiyadh,
RIGHT AWAY
confident, generous. Dishes arrived familystyle: fragrant rice, beautifully cooked chicken, sharp little salads, sauces with bite and breads I devoured. It felt unmistakably Riyadh, rooted in tradition, happy to improvise, and very, very good.
From Diriyah’s dreamy stays to platelicking dinners and blissfully zero humidity, I fell hard for Saudi Arabia
WORDS: LIAM JOYCE
landed in Riyadh expecting heat and hustle. I didn’t expect the immigration officer to greet me with rapid-fire Arabic, assume I was local, and wave me through with the easy warmth of a long-lost cousin. It happened again with cab drivers, hotel staff, even the barista who handed me a cup of karak like we’d known each other since school. Apparently I’ve got a very convincing ‘Saudi on a city break’ face, and honestly, I took it as the highest compliment and a sign to fast track my Arabic lessons.
What really surprised me was how quickly the city felt like mine. Riyadh is big and bold and buzzing, but it’s also gracious, and, praise be, free of humidity. My hair forgave me. My temper did too.
Base camp was Bab Samhan Hotel in Diriyah, a hotel that feels stitched into the earth. Think warm textures, handsome lines, and that classic Najdi palette that makes every corner a camera moment. Step outside and you’re in lanes that whisper old stories - mud-brick silhouettes, date palms,
the soft thrum of evening when lanterns flicker on and families begin their stroll. It’s the sort of place that slows your breathing a notch. I slept like a saint and woke to sunlight ribboning through the windows, the city stretching awake beyond.
Meals became the day’s punctuation marks. La Petite Maison for lunch was the familiar hug I didn’t know I needed, bright, lemony, and a little bit show-off (as it should be). We shared plates until the table disappeared: silky burrata, delicious snails, and that iconic roast baby chicken that tastes like sunshine learned to cook. Dinner at Najdi was the Saudi chapter, modern,
Now, the roads. Riyadh drives like it’s training for a motorsport category that hasn’t been invented yet. Lanes are more ‘suggestions’ than ‘rules’, indicators are décor, and speeds are, well, enthusiastic. I clutched the seatbelt like a rosary and developed a sudden interest in defensive breathing. And yet, even in the chaos, there’s courtesy: drivers slide over to let you merge, wave you through with a nod, and deposit you curbside with a parting “welcome” that you feel in your bones.
That’s the enduring note of the city: welcome. Saudis are startlingly friendly, curious, generous, and quick to help. Ask a question and you’ll get directions, recommendations, family history, and probably a phone number in case you need anything else. I lost count of the times someone walked me to a door rather than just pointing. It turns a big city into a neighbourhood.
By the time I checked out, Riyadh had picked my pockets and filled them with new favourites. Sunrise walks in Diriyah, long lunches that stretch into plans, and the thrill of a city reinventing itself in real time. I left with a full camera roll, a half-learned greeting, and a soft promise to come back soon. Some places seduce you slowly. Riyadh got me the moment the plane door opened and the air said: relax, there’s no humidity here.

Once the homes of kings and queens, these palaces now welcome travellers with five-star service and majestic charm.
Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, India
This palace-turned-hotel was originally known as Jag Niwas, built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Floating on the serene waters of Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Rajasthan, it once served as the royal family’s summer retreat. Today, it houses 83 rooms, each meticulously restored to its former glory, offering guests a glimpse into a bygone era. Dromoland, Ireland
Fun fact: Ireland is home to around 30,000 castles and ruins, a legacy of centuries of conflict between Irish clans and invading forces like the AngloNormans. Many still stand today, and some even welcome guests.
Dromoland Castle, in Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare, is a 16th-century five-star castle hotel set on a 500-acre estate. Once the ancestral home of the O’Briens, descendants of High King Brian Boru, it now offers spacious rooms with canopied beds, exquisite furnishings, and sweeping views. Guests can enjoy falconry, archery, clay pigeon shooting, or the championship 18-hole golf course, while guided tours reveal the castle’s fascinating history. The estate also serves as a stunning wedding venue.

Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, Turkey
Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, with a history as captivating as its setting. Dating back to the 17th century, it began life as a waterside villa before being transformed into a marble palace and royal residence. In 1910, a devastating fire reduced it to ruins, and it remained unused until Kempinski Hotels reopened it as a luxury hotel in 1991.
Today, the palace is home to 317 rooms and suites, as well as restaurants and bars offering exceptional culinary experiences. It regularly hosts Istanbul’s most high-profile meetings, congresses, weddings, and social events, and holds the distinction of being the only Ottoman imperial palace and hotel on the Bosphorus. Guests can unwind in the indulgent spa or take a dip in the infinity pool, where the sensation of floating directly on the Bosphorus makes for an unforgettable experience.

Canal-Side
THE STAY
A long weekend at Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf and I briefly considered forwarding my mail. It’s a bona fide escape tucked inside the city and once you pass the gates, the traffic, to-do lists, and that recurring “did I reply to that email?” question, all fade behind palm-lined canals and wind towers. We checked into one of the Arabian Houses and did the only sensible thing, ditched the schedule and let the resort set the pace.
THE SETTING
This is the grand, quietly glamorous side of Dubai: low-rise ‘houses’ cattered along tranquil waterways, abra boats gliding past, and the sea a short stroll away. It’s very Arabian with arched doorways, warm timber, textured stone, and true Arab hospitality, which we appreciated. The whole place hums at that sweet spot between secluded and social. Yes, you’re minutes from the city’s buzz, but it truly doesn’t feel like it.
THE ROOM
Our room in the Arabian House was generous without showing off. Calm tones, carved details, and a bed that actively resists checkout. The bathroom is built for lingering (long shower, deep tub), storage is grown-up with proper wardrobe space, and the balcony is where morning coffee somehow tastes better. Housekeeping is quick and eagle-eyed and having a private butler is of course a luxury you never want to end. Lenon made our stay special and made sure every request was met.
THE FOOD & DRINK
The resort offers an array of dinning options. Our first stop was Pai Thai, where arriving by a buggy and leaving by abra is half the joy. This casual restaurant offers authentic Thai classics with bright, balanced flavours and a setting by the water that does most of the talking. Dinner at Pierchic was, and will always be - a big gesture. Waves below, skyline beyond, views of the iconic Jumeirah Burj Al Arab and Italian food that hits the soul. Brunch at Arboretum was the weekend’s warmest moment. While it had all the elements of a Dubai brunch, manager William and assistant manager Ryan ran the floor with the kind of attentive, unfussy hospitality that turns a good spread into a great afternoon. The dessert offerings were delicious and yes, multiple plates were enjoyed (not ashamed).
THE ACTIVITIES
Pack your ‘I’m definitely working out this trip’ optimism because the J Club makes it plausible with serious kit and classes. When the spa voice in your head wins, Talise Spa answers with calm rooms and therapists who know when to chat and when to let you float. And for pure dopamine, we booked jet skiing at sunset. Golden light, fresh air out at sea, and the sort of grin you can’t Photoshop.
Top tip: secure your sunglasses unless you enjoy donating to the Gulf waters.
THE EXPERIENCE
Service is polished and personal without hovering. Staff remember your coffee order, boats appear when you start thinking ‘boat?’, and dinner teams anticipate the next move. It’s the kind of choreography you notice most by how little you notice it. The overall rhythm is slow-luxe, you wander, swim, eat, relax and repeat, sprinkled with the occasional “how do we live here?” conversation.
WHAT TO PACK
Light linen and something smarter for Pierchic; gym kit for J Club; swimwear (plural); SPF you actually reapply;
WHATS ON THE BILL
Seasonal rates for a Arabian Palm House garden room start from Dhs4,300 per night in the winter season and Dhs1,400 during summer.
THE FINAL SAY
If you want proof you can switch off without leaving Dubai, Dar Al Masyaf is it. Grand but grounded, romantic but family-friendly, and the kind of place where an abra ride becomes a memory. Go for the Arabian Houses but stay for sunsets on the water and brunch service that remembers your name. I promised myself I wouldn’t move in. I failed, mentally at least.

The Boneyard BBQ Day Brunch & After Dark Brunch at BAI Bar & Terrace
Saturday plans, sorted. From 1pm to 4pm, BAI Bar & Terrace turns lunch into an easygoing canalside party where the grill does the talking and the skyline does the flirting. Chefs work the flames while platters land with swagger. Smoky cuts fresh off the fire, punchy slaws and pickles, and sauces that insist on a second dip. It’s the kind of brunch where conversation stretches, playlists stay feel-good, and the afternoon moves at the pace of your appetite.
Grab a table on the terrace and let the team keep things flowing. When the sun clocks out, BAI clocks in
Deep South Social Brunch at FireLake: bold flavours, big vibes
for round two. After Dark runs 7pm to 10pm, swapping sunshine for city lights and turning the grill into centre stage. The formula is deliciously familiar: flame-kissed favourites, share-worthy sides, and a steady flow of drinks, recast for a night that feels like a party with very good catering. Staff keep glasses topped and courses moving, so you can focus on the stories that only come out at night.
The soundtrack leans upbeat, the canal mirrors the skyline, and plates arrive with that just-off-the-coals char you can smell before you see.
When: Saturdays, 1pm to 4pm and 7pm to 10pm
Where: BAI Bar & Terrace, Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Canal View
Saturdays just found their groove. FireLake Grill House & Cocktail Bar at Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Waterfront has launched the Deep South Social Brunch, a canal-side celebration of smokehouse cooking, live music, and proper Southern hospitality. From 12.30pm to 4pm, the terrace hums with weekend energy as chefs work the flames and platters land with serious swagger. Wagyu smashed burgers hot off the plancha, wood-fired king prawns, freshly grilled lamb chops and classic steak frites, all backed by punchy sides and sauces that demand a second dip. Views of the Dubai Canal and Downtown skyline do the rest.
The experience starts with interactive tableside service, “Bring Me Food!” small plates and a stacked seafood tower designed for sharing, then moves to the live-fire BBQ counter before finishing on a sweet note with a dessert selection worth lingering over. Drinks keep pace with the party: Southern-inspired cocktails, an on-themove Oyster Cart and Aperol Cart, plus live mixology stations that make the rounds feel effortless.
A live singer, DJ and saxophonist set the rhythm, so your afternoon naturally slides from lazy catch-ups to a low-key celebration. Choose your package, Dhs395 for soft drinks, Dhs495 for house beverages, or Dhs595 for premium pours. Little foodies aged six to eleven join for AED 115.
