EDITOR’S

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE DESERT THAT ALWAYS DRAWS ME BACK

No matter how many times I find myself there, whether it’s the break of dawn with the first light spilling over the dunes, or that perfect stillness as the sun dips away, it never feels the same twice. The desert has a way of humbling you. It makes you feel small, but at the same time, it fills you with a sense of freedom you don’t quite get in many other places.

This month’s issue of What’s On Northern Emirates is a love letter to that magic. We’ve gone out and explored the desert in all its different moods, from hot air balloon rides that let you see the world from a whole new perspective, to thrilling dune buggy tours and off-road adventures that test both nerves and stamina. At night, the desert transforms again and offers stargazing under skies so clear you could spot constellations with the naked eye.

Of course, not every desert experience has to be adrenaline-packed. Some of my favourite moments are the quiet ones: the slow clip-clop of horseback riding through the sand, the silence broken only by hoofbeats and wind. It’s the kind of grounding experience that reminds you why the desert is so deeply woven into the culture and heritage of the Emirates.

And for those who prefer to mix their adventure with a little indulgence, this issue is packed with inspiration. We’ve rounded up last-chance staycation deals that are too good to miss, perfect for sneaking in one final escape before the season shifts. I also had the pleasure of checking into The RitzCarlton Al Wadi Desert, and it’s a stay that left me inspired long after I returned. Waking up to gazelles grazing outside your villa, slipping into a private pool as the sun comes up, and winding down the day beneath a star-filled sky, it’s luxury in harmony with nature, and you can read my full review inside.

So whether you’re looking for thrills, tranquility, or just a fresh reason to explore, the desert is waiting. It’s right on our doorstep, yet endlessly surprising. And I can promise you this: no two trips into the dunes will ever feel the same.

Until next time,

Liam

Platinum Heritage is one of the biggest names in the desert safari business in Dubai, offering everything from conservation breakfasts to overnight desert camps. But for the all-out desert experience, book their Platinum Desert Safari. It starts with a nature drive where an experienced guide will point out the unique fauna and flora. Whether you explore it through guided tours or solo adventures, Al Madam offers an fascinating experience, with no entry fee, making it an accessible and captivating cultural landmark for all.

Desert picnic, The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert

If you’re looking for an exclusive and private way to dine in the dunes, opt for a personal desert picnic put on by The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert. It’s the perfect romantic celebration or proposal, and just requires 48 hours advanced booking notice. @ritzcarltonalwadidesert

My Space Café, Sharjah

A post-pandemic trend that emerged across the emirates was social distancing-friendly desert cafés. And while social distancing may no longer be necessary, these cafes continue to be one of the most popular – and Instagrammable – experiences to try during the cooler months. There’s plenty on the fringes of Dubai, like Limited, One Degree and Hidden, which all typically return to operation in early November. In Sharjah, the perennially popular My Space Café usually welcomes guests back from mid-November, and as well as futuristiclooking design, it serves up sweet treats and warming cups of coffee, perfect for enjoying under the stars. WORDS: MANAAL FATIMAH

We won’t be hearing any more Sharjah slander – not in this household. WTo inspire your next visit, we asked Omar Jasim Al Ali - Manager, Mleiha & Strategic Projects, to talk us through what makes it so special. WORDS:

MAKE FOR MLEIHA

With over 210,000 years of human history, 34.2 square kilometres of adventure, and now even a UNESCO Heritage status, Mleiha National Park is a must-visit for culture-vultures, thrill-seekers and history lovers

ith culture, heritage, and a passion for preserving history at its core, Sharjah has cemented its status as a must-visit for authentic, locally inspired experiences. Among its starring attractions is Mleiha. Transformed into a National Park as of February 2025, this fascinating enclave invites guests to adventure across golden dunes, travel back in time to ancient civilisations and stay in dazzling eco-retreats.

Omar Jasim Al Ali

What makes Mleiha so unique?

Mleiha is truly unique as it combines nature, history, adventure, and culture into one breathtaking destination.

Excavated since 1973, Mleiha is home to groundbreaking finds, including evidence of ancient human migration, a 4,500-yearold Umm an-Nar tomb, and Arabia’s only known ritual horse-and-camel burial. A must-visit is the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, which serves not only as a vital research institution but also as a dynamic educational experience that bring the region’s ancient past to life.

The history in Mleiha dates back to the stone age. What are some of the early artefacts you can see?

Mleiha is home to numerous stone tools from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, as well as tools from the Bronze and Iron Ages, offering direct evidence of early human craftsmanship and survival techniques.

A particularly fascinating feature is a collection of inscriptions that provide invaluable insights into the linguistic and cultural landscape of early Arabian civilisations.

What surprises people most when they visit Mleiha for the first time?

People are often taken aback by the sheer scale and beauty of the pristine desert surroundings. Many are surprised to learn that Mleiha is not just a historical site but an active excavation zone, with ongoing research revealing new discoveries regularly.

Are there any new experiences you can tell us about for this winter season?

This season, we are expanding access and refining our current experiences to make them more engaging for visitors across all ages. Adventure seekers can continue to enjoy the Dune Buggy Landscapes Tour, Sand Surfer rides, and horse riding along desert trails. For those interested in the science of the stars, our Stargazing Nights, Astronomy Events, and Space Camp offer unforgettable evenings under the open sky. Visitors can also embark on archaeological journeys with the Valley of the Caves Tour, Jebel Buhais Tour, and the ArchaeoMOG and SUV Landscape Tours, each offering a deeper understanding of our region’s ancient past.

And thrill-seekers can now take to the skies with Sky Adventures, the UAE’s first licensed paragliding centre, offering panoramic views over Mleiha’s extraordinary landscape.

Rather than continuously introducing new concepts, we focus on enhancing these signature experiences, ensuring every visit to Mleiha feels fresh, inspiring, and authentic.

We know there’s loads to do, but if you had to pick one, what is the must-visit Mleiha experience?

If I were to highlight just one that captures the very soul of this destination, it would be the glamping experience. To spend a night here is to rediscover a forgotten rhythm, one where comfort and authenticity coexist, and where the sunrise becomes a quiet lesson in serenity. This experience reflects what Mleiha stands for: a return to what is essential, a dialogue between heritage and horizon, and a moment of stillness in a world that moves too fast. @discovermleiha

DID YOU KNOW?

As of July 2025, Faya Paleolandscape – the ancient desert location in Sharjah of which Mleiha National Park sits within the core – has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only the second destination in the UAE to be placed on the list, it’s described by UNESCO as providing “valuable insights into human resilience in hyper-arid environments.”

HELLO, Copenhagen

FDiscovering a Hygge way of life

rom the bustling way of life here in Dubai, I found myself on a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark. Leaving behind my to-do lists and calendar meetings to slow down and enjoy life in the slow lane. There’s a saying with 25hours Hotel. You know one, you know none. The idea born out of the idea of having different 25hours hotels all over the world. At the heart of Copenhagen lies Amalienborg, the residence of Denmark’s royal family and the seat of one of the world’s oldest monarchies. Inside, you can explore the elegant royal chambers, a glittering treasury of world-class jewelry, a room dedicated to Fabergé masterpieces, and the grand Gala Hall. Time your visit around noon to witness the changing of the guard – a daily tradition that draws a crowd. Just remember, this isn’t a performance. The guards are on active duty, so be respectful and give them space. denkongeligesamling.dk

Copenhagen Canal Tour

Want to experience the best of Copenhagen without adding to your step count? Hop aboard a canal tour for a relaxed, scenic ride through the city’s waterways. Relax as the boat glides under low historic bridges and past iconic landmarks. The friendly guides share fun facts and local stories along the way, pointing out highlights like Nyhavn, the Church of Our Saviour, the Royal Danish Opera House, and even a glimpse of the Little Mermaid (from the back). The tour strikes a perfect balance between relaxing and informative, especially on a sunny day when the colourful facades reflect off the water. Stroll through the Nyhavn

Blend in with the locals and take a stroll through Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s iconic waterfront district. Choose a café, sip a cold beer, or simply wander along the harbour and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The canal is lined with brightly coloured 17thcentury townhouses, buzzing bars, cozy cafés, and lively restaurants, while old wooden ships, some over a century old, gently bob in the water. For fairy tale fans, Hans Christian Andersen once lived at No 20, where he wrote The Tinderbox, Little Claus and Big Claus, and The Princess and the Pea.

The RitzCarlton Ras Al Wadi Desert

THE STAY

The moment you pull into the long, winding driveway of The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, you know you’re in for something extraordinary. Set in the heart of a protected nature reserve, this resort offers a stay unlike anywhere else in the UAE. Whether you’re coming from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or further afield, the contrast between the city’s hustle and the serenity of the desert hits immediately. This isn’t just a weekend getaway, it’s a chance to reset. The level of care begins from the welcome drink at check-in to the personalised itinerary recommendations offered by the concierge. Everything is designed to let you experience the desert in the most luxurious, yet authentic way possible.

THE SETTING

The sprawling desert reserve is home to oryx, gazelles, camels, and even wild foxes. You’ll spot them wandering freely between villas or lounging under ghaf trees. At night, the sky becomes a canvas of stars, unobstructed by city lights. Mornings begin with golden sunrises casting long shadows over the dunes, while evenings bring dramatic colours and total calm. The natural beauty is enhanced by the resort’s unobtrusive architecture, which blends seamlessly into the sand-hued landscape.

THE ROOM

We stayed in an Al Rimal Pool Villa, and

it was nothing short of breathtaking. With high ceilings, and natural dark wood finishes, the interiors reflect the desert’s calm without sacrificing modern comfort. The bathroom had a deep standalone tub, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let in endless natural light. But the real luxury was the private outdoor space: a terrace with a sun lounger, a shaded dining area and a temperature-controlled private pool overlooking the dunes. It felt like our own desert sanctuary. Waking up to wildlife grazing near the pool and ending the day with a dip under the stars made for an unforgettable experience.

THE FOOD & DRINK

Dining at this hotel is full-on experience. Breakfast at Kaheela was a generous, global affair with fresh Arabic mezze, perfectly poached eggs, and more juice options than you can count. Our dinner at Gobi took us on a pan-Asian journey that hit all the right spots. Sushi with caviar, Omani lobster and the yummiest chocolate fondant were just some of the highlights. A private dinner at The Paddock took the experience up a notch. Who doesn’t want to have a private chef and staff prepare mouth watering baked camembert with honey while watching the camels roam around outside. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and every dish felt crafted with care.

THE ACTIVITIES

Whether you’re craving action or relaxation, there’s plenty to keep you busy. There are falconry shows, and nature walks when it isn’t too hot and villas come with bikes for guests to ride around the resort. There is also horseback riding offered. The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers desert-inspired treatments and The Rainforest combines European hydrothermal culture with Middle Eastern bathing rituals, creating a rejuvenating sanctuary in the Arabian desert.

THE EXPERIENCE

The true magic of the resort is in its balance. It offers complete escapism, but with every comfort accounted for. The staff are incredibly warm, with genuine hospitality and they are always going the extra mile. Every interaction, from housekeeping to the spa, felt thoughtful and considered. There’s a personalised touch that elevates the stay.

WHAT TO PACK

Pack light, breathable clothing and a good pair of sandals is essential, and don’t forget sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat for daytime activities. A swimsuit is a must.

WHAT’S ON THE BILL

Rates start from Dhs2,000 for a Al Rimal Villa and Dhs9,000 for a Sunrise Signature two bedroom villa. Season dependant.

THE FINAL SAY

This the kind of place that lingers with you. It’s not just about five-star luxury, but about reconnecting with nature, with loved ones, and with yourself. For a staycation that feels like a true escape, far removed from the skyscrapers and speed of city life, this is one of the UAE’s best-kept secrets.
