EDITOR’S LETTER
KEEP EXPLORING
It’s hard to believe it’s already been three months since I moved to the UAE and took on the role of editor at What’s On. In that short time, I’ve had the joy of discovering so much about this city, its energy, its creativity, its endless appetite for good food and memorable experiences. And yet, I’m learning some important lessons along the way, too… like the fact that just because the grocery store is open 24 hours a day doesn’t mean I need to buy a doughnut at 1am (a work in progress).
This issue is very much about discovery, too. Our cover feature takes you on a tour of some of Dubai’s hippest neighbourhoods. These aren’t just places on a map, each comes alive with its own atmosphere, character, and hidden gems. Whether you already know them or you’re exploring them for the first time, we’ve tried to capture the spirit that makes each pocket of Dubai so unique.
For those new to the city, our newbies’ guide has everything from tips on how to settle in, to the basic Arabic phrases you’ll want in your vocabulary. And since romance is never out of season, we’ve rounded up the 12 most romantic restaurants in town. Whether you’re planning a date night, an anniversary, or simply want to treat yourself to something special.
Culture lovers will want to bookmark our guide to the art exhibitions you should see now, a reminder of how vibrant and dynamic Dubai’s creative scene really is. Meanwhile, families will find inspiration in our back-to-school routine reset, as we all wave goodbye to the long summer holidays and gear up for a new season.
And of course, I’ve been out exploring too. This month, I had the pleasure of dining at Amelia, a spot that more than lived up to the hype, and I also escaped to the desert once more, this time for a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert, which offered a blend of luxury, serenity, and starry skies that’s hard to beat.
As ever, What’s On is here to be your guide, to help you discover the city’s newest finds, revisit its best-loved favourites, and experience everything in between. Whether you’re new here, like me, or a long-time resident, I hope you’ll find something in these pages to inspire your next outing.
See you around the city (but hopefully not at the doughnut counter at 1am),
Up for an icy challenge? The Ice Warrior Challenge takes place in Dubai this month at Ski Dubai. One of the coldest spots in the city will transform into a thrilling obstacle course complete with more than 20 high-intensity obstacles, including rope walls, ice pools, monkey bars, tyre runs, net crawls, and ‘snow’ much more. Register to take part. premieronline.com

Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Tuesday Le Roux
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month we chat to a Dubai-based presenter and content creator Tuesday Le Roux (@tuesday_leroux), with over 1.3 million followers and a passion for cars, cutting-edge tech, and luxe properties. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she’s gone from hosting TV and radio back home to working with the world’s biggest automotive brand, Supercar Blondie, and presenting for names like Mercedes-Benz, Steve Harvey, Etihad Airways, and F1.
As much as I adore the luxe life, my perfect escape is in RAK, glamping under the stars, breathing in that crisp, clean air, and going off-roading or hiking during the day. Then it’s all about making a fire, swapping stories, and just soaking in the night sky with zero light pollution.
Anywhere I can find jaw-dropping cars, futuristic tech, or outrageous mansions. If it makes me say “wow” out loud, I’m in.
This might sound random, but my happy place is DNA Board Game Café. Not only is the food unreal (seriously, chef’s kiss), but I love gathering my friends for a night of games, laughter, and a little friendly competition. The vibe is so cosy, the food is amazing and I have to admit… I’m ridiculously competitive.
@eat.play.dna
Honestly? Online. I’m not a mall person, the parking, the crowds, the “where did I park my car?” moment… every single time.
I’m obsessed with stand-up comedy. Laughing is my ultimate reset button - there’s nothing like watching a comic turn the little everyday things we all experience into something completely unexpected and hilarious. It’s watching a creative genius at work, and it always leaves me feeling lighter.
I don’t party often, but when I do, it’s at Stick No Bills. It’s got culture, “get your butt on the dance floor” music, and the kind of crowd that makes you feel instantly at home. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, Aaron and Jeff always leave feeling like you’re part of the family.
@sticknobillsdxb
Yas Island is pure magic - from theme parks to beaches to amazing restaurants. It’s like stepping into a bubble of happiness, tied up with a big bow of vacation vibes.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and Old Dubai
WORDS: AARTI SAUNDALKAR
THE SCENE
Old Dubai is always buzzing. Whether you’re in Karama, Al Fahidi, Bur Dubai, or Deira, the energy is nonstop. Tourists explore museums and souks, while traders and shopkeepers keep commerce flowing. Residents add to the rhythm, either running errands, socialising, and filling the streets with life. It’s not just about history and heritage; Old Dubai is also home to budget-friendly restaurants serving incredible food, making it a mustvisit for anyone craving culture, flavour, and authenticity.
WHY VISIT
The traffic (or Dubai Metro) battle is worth the visit to Old Dubai. It is the area of Dubai that existed long before the glitzy skyline put the city on the map. It may not be glam, but it is rich in culture and history. Head to Deira to the souqs and shop at the Gold Souq, Spice Souq and Naif Souq. In Al Fahidi, up your step count by visiting the number of museums dotting the intertwining lanes of the culturally rich district. As for Karama, it’s a foodie haven, and perfect for shopping at the eclectic stores dotting the lanes.
WHO LIVES HERE
Rental prices in Old Dubai are more affordable compared to other parts of the city, attracting many long-term residents. Even those who’ve moved to areas like Dubai Marina or Al Barsha often return for the life they left behind. The community here is incredibly diverse: South Asian, Filipino, African, and Middle Eastern expats call it home. A number of Emiratis also live in these neighbourhoods, particularly in Al Fahidi and Al Shindagha, where deep generational roots are still visible and the cultural fabric of the city remains strong.
WHERE TO EAT
Old Dubai is home to an unending range of cuisines and there is something for everyone. For South Indian cuisine, head to Woodlands Restaurant in Karama. This 32 year-old establishment serves golden crispy dosas and medu vadas (savoury doughnuts) with delicious sambar and chutneys. For a bigger meal, try the thali – a platter with a variety of dishes including rice, puris, lentils, vegetables, yogurt, and pickles. Don’t skip their filter coffee. For global flavours, head to Creek City Restaurant in Bur Dubai and treat yourself to a range of cuisines from around the world, including Turkish, Afghani, Thai, Chinese, Italian, and Middle Eastern.
THINGS TO DO
From haggling in souks to feasting on global cuisines, Old Dubai promises a packed itinerary. Don’t miss the museums in Al Fahidi and Al Seef which bustles during winter. In Bur Dubai, shoppers can browse for Indian attire, textiles, gold, and perfumes in vibrant local stores. Short on time during your visit? Head straight to the Creek and hop on a traditional abra for just Dh1, a scenic ride between Deira and Bur Dubai that captures the true spirit of the city.
LOCAL SECRETS
Blend in with the locals and head to Al Hara Cafeteria in Karama. Pull up in your car, get the attention of the staff and order a Disco Chai (a Desi tea) for Dhs2. You can also order their lip-smacking shawarma for a quick bite. For a real treat, visit Bur Dubai over Diwali and be treated to buildings glittering with lights.

Al Quoz
WORDS: AARTI SAUNDALKAR
THE SCENE
Al Quoz is one of Dubai’s ever evolving districts with many mini-neighbourhoods, predominantly in the creative and culture sector. Because of the crowds that these spaces draw in, it is catching the attention of restaurants and hip cafes, each bringing a unique take on the foodie scene. A drive to visit some of its popular spots will include glimpses of warehouses and spaces that are under construction, but the vibe changes as soon as you reach your destination.
WHY VISIT
People should visit Al Quoz because it’s Dubai’s creative heartbeat, a unique blend of gritty industrial scenes and cutting-edge art. For those not a fan of art, you may not find yourself staring at an art piece for minutes on end, but you will surely stick around for the unique vibes. It’s the perfect spot to escape the glitzy tourist scenes and offers something for everyone: art enthusiasts, culture fans, and foodies alike.
LOCAL SECRETS
Tip: Take your time. Al Quoz is packed with hidden alleyways and interesting spaces just waiting to be discovered. From stunning murals to cafes, you’re sure to find something. During winter, you’ll return time and time again to Alserkal Avenue. Another spot to add to your list when it’s cooler? Al Quoz Pond Park. It’s a great spot to lay in the grass or enjoy a run, and it offers a stunning view of the Burj Khalifa. @alserkalavenue
THINGS TO DO
One of the top spaces to visit is Alserkal Avenue. It is popular for its art galleries, arthouse cinema - Cinema Akil, performing art space The Junction (with local actors), and much more. Over winter, there are cool art festivals which draw in some of coolest people in Dubai. Right opposite is The Courtyard, a space that also fosters art, culture, and collaboration. Its courtyard alone is worth a visit over the winter where you can sip coffee and enjoy the tranquility. Stepping away from the art scene, you can take the little ones to Bounce or Air Maniax, or enjoy an escape room with your friends.
WHERE TO EAT
Sushi fans, don’t skip Kokoro in Alserkal Avenue. It is Dubai’s first handroll bar with a hole-in-the-wall charm, warm energy, and ultra-fresh fish. THINGS TO DO
For foodies on the hunt for your next meal, drive through Al Barsha 1 to find your next favourite spot to dine. You will be spoilt with restaurants spanning cuisines nestled side by side from Indian, Arabic, Filipino and Iranian. For those seeking recovery from a sporting injury, there are acupuncture centres that will help sort you out.

Dubai Marina & Jumeirah Beach Residence
WORDS: MADIE MURPHY
THE SCENE
It’s possibly Dubai’s most famous neighbourhood and a tourist attraction in itself with glitzy skyscrapers, superyachts, and sunsets that look edited. By day, runners and pram-pushers cruise the Marina Walk, while beachgoers stretch out on JBR’s golden sand. By night, the whole place turns into a neon-lit playground of restaurants, rooftop bars, and nightlife spots, and tourists wander the JBR strip of shops and cafes. This part of Dubai is the most holiday-esque, just try not to get in the way of a scooter.
WHY VISIT
Even if your postcode is miles away, Dubai Marina and JBR demand a spot on your weekend plans. You can go for the full day and not be bored for a second. Start with a wander along the Marina Walk, water on one side, skyscrapers on the other, then hit the beach for a swim, camel selfie, or jet ski. Browse the popup markets, shop in Marina Mall, or just sit at a cafe pretending you own one of the yachts. That’s what we do, anyway.
THINGS TO DO
WHERE TO EAT
Head to Pier 7 for all types of food options along with gorgeous and glittering Marina views that you’ll have definitely seen in the background of someone’s Instagram photo. Grab some pub grub and a pint at Bedrock, head to Asia Asia for some delicious sushi or go to the Atelier M lounge at the top for some late night DJs. If you’re looking for little cafes there are plenty dotted around the Marina and along JBR.
Marina mornings = sunrise yoga, paddleboarding, or jogging the 7km loop. Afternoons? Beach time at JBR, complete with water sports and open-air cinema. Shopaholics can hit Dubai Marina Mall, while night owls can head to Pier 7 for seven floors of bars and restaurants, or to Bla Bla on JBR where there’s always a good song playing. Want the wow factor? Try a sunset cruise on one of the many yacht companies based in the Marina. Basically, you’ll run out of daylight before you run out of things to do.
WHO LIVES HERE
The accommodation is mostly apartments, from sky-high penthouses to cosier studios and you’ll mostly find couples and young professionals living here. Think LinkedIn-meets-Instagram. Tourists who came for a week and never quite left. It’s a full-on international mix, so you’ll hear countless accents as you walk around, and the only thing to determine the holiday-makers from the 10-year-deep expats are the tan lines. And yes, it’s a guarantee that you’ll meet your neighbour in the lift, on the promenade, or halfway into a flat white at the local cafe.
LOCAL SECRETS
Even though there are so many amazing restaurants dotted around the Marina and along JBR, if you want really good food for a miniscule price then Grill & Chill in the Marina is a great shout. It’s nothing fancy, and you won’t be getting Insta-worthy dishes but the food tastes great, it’s super cheap and has the freshest juices squeezed right there in front of you. Another tip, if you’re tired of dodging tourists on JBR, head to Bluewaters Island for more restaurants and a vibe that is a little more chilled.

The Palm Jumeirah
WORDS: LANA DUGMAG
THE SCENE
There are two versions of Dubai: one built on speed, one built on stillness. You’ve got the energy of Downtown Dubai, and then you’ve got the calm of The Palm. The Palm has its own pace: wide streets, endless sea views, and that feeling of being in your own world. Life here revolves around water; swims, kayaking, coffee with a view, and sunset walks along the Crescent. Villas and low-rise apartments come with that backdrop, if you’re on the right side of the frond. This neighbourhood is for those who love space, light, water, community, and prefer a laid-back vibe over the daily rush.
WHY VISIT
No matter how long you’ve lived in Dubai, ten years or ten days, The Palm still feels surreal. A man-made island shaped like a palm tree, lined with beaches, restaurants, and hotels - it’s a one-off. It’s also one of the most walkable neighbourhoods in the city. Spend the day on West Beach, swim, eat, work, stay, all without getting in a car. It’s full of contrasts: quiet mornings, beach clubs by afternoon, skyline views at night. Walk West Beach, grab coffee at Jones, watch the sun drop behind the city. Or check into a hotel and spend the weekend moving between the water, the restaurants, and a late-night table by the sea.
WHO LIVES HERE
WHERE TO EAT
KoKo Bay is the go-to on West Beach for Asian fusion right on the beach, with a relaxed atmosphere and good tunes. If you’re after a day-into-evening hangout for food, drinks, and beach lounging, Tagomago is the spot, a Mediterranean beach bar that has it all. Ibn Al Bahr is a solid option for Lebanese seafood market-style dining right by the water. AMELIA, DOWNTOWN DUBAI
The Spot
Located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, Amelia is no ordinary restaurant. Named after aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, this glamorous lounge-dining concept marries fine dining with theatrical interiors. Step inside and you’re transported: soaring ceilings, gleaming brass, and intricate aviation-inspired design details that make you feel as though you’ve boarded a luxury aircraft from a bygone era. Add in sweeping views of the Burj Khalifa, and Amelia sets the scene for a night that feels every bit as iconic as its namesake.
The Vibe
Early in the evening, Amelia is sleek and refined with well-heeled diners soaking in the interiors with a cocktail in hand. As the night progresses, the atmosphere shifts gears: a DJ picks up the tempo, beats fill the room, and guests gradually swap fine dining for dancing. It’s part supper club, part high-energy lounge, all wrapped in a polished, cosmopolitan energy.
The Food And Drinks
The culinary offering at Amelia is outstanding, blending Japanese precision with bold Peruvian flavours. Highlights
from our table included the Ageta, Sake Nikkei Ceviche, and Hamachi Tiradito, each dish balancing freshness with artful presentation. The Rollo de Camarones (shrimp rolls) and Papas a la Trufa (truffle potatoes) were indulgent yet perfectly balanced, while the Mariscos Mezclado showcased seafood at its best. A standout was the seafood pasta because it was rich, comforting, and packed with flavour.
For mains and sharing plates, the Machu Picchu arrived as a colourful fusion of textures, and dessert was a showstopper: the Pelota de Chocolate, cracked open to reveal layers of decadent sweetness. Drinks are as creative as the menu: we tried the Amelia, Tropical Island, and a Passion Virgin Martini; the Lollipop mocktail proved just as inventive. Every sip, much like every bite, felt meticulously crafted.
The Service
Service at Amelia is world-class. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, topping up glasses and guiding us through the menu with precision and enthusiasm. Every recommendation by our South African waiter felt spot-on, and small details like pacing the dishes perfectly and checking in at the right moments elevated
the experience. There’s a confidence in the way the team moves, mirroring the sophistication of the venue itself.
What To Order
❑ Sake Nikkei Ceviche
❑ Hamachi Tiradito
❑ Rollo de Camarones
❑ Seafood pasta
❑ Pelota de Chocolate
❑ Amelia signature cocktail or Lollipop mocktail
What’s On the bill
Expect to pay around Dhs800–1,000 for two, including cocktails. Pricey, yes, but worth it for the food quality, attention to detail, and atmosphere.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
A dazzling blend of design, dining, and nightlife, Amelia is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience. Go for the food, stay for the music, and leave feeling like you’ve taken flight.

THE BOMBAY CLUB
A contemporary take on India’s heritage
We stepped into The Bombay Club at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab with clear expectations, and left with something more. The space is warm and intimate, with an open kitchen and a tandoori oven that’s part of the art of Indian cooking itself. Led by Chef Manav Tuli, the menu honours Bombay’s culinary roots with dishes that feel familiar but offer a contemporary take on the classics. Great Indian food is rich, spiced, layered, vibrant, fragrant, smoky, and hearty, and The Bombay Club knows how to bring it all together.
The spot
You’ll find The Bombay Club on the ground floor of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. It’s dimly lit, wood-heavy and high on retro. The kind of place that feels like a hidden Bombay retreat, with vintage charm and art details throughout. There’s a show kitchen in one corner, with a tandoori oven that adds warmth and a homey feel. It’s lively, but still feels intimate, just as suited to a laidback dinner with friends as it is to a quiet date night.
The vibe
There’s a quiet confidence here. It’s not trying to be trendy, which makes it even more special. It feels like someone’s
retro-style home with a refined touch of chic interiors, giving off an elegant yet comfortable vibe.
The food
The Bombay Club’s menu is a mix of Bombay street food favourites, but it also dives deeper into regional specialties from Goa, Hyderabad, and other parts of India. The dishes showcase India’s diverse flavours, with rich spices and authentic recipes that are perfect for sharing.
The service
The team knows their stuff. Expect smart recommendations. They’ll also share facts about the food’s origin or spice mix if you ask. There’s a sense of storytelling behind the menu in a way that connects you to where the food comes from.
What to order
Chef Manav Tuli, known for his work at Hong Kong’s Michelin-starred Chaat, brings a focused, heritage-led approach to Indian cooking. The menu explores the flavours of Bombay through the lens of India’s royal kitchens; rich and perfect to share. Starters include the chutney set (sweet lime, tomato, mint, beetroot, chili), the signature guinea fowl samosa, keema pav with soft milk buns,
and tiger prawns in a punchy Goan balchao. From the tandoor, there’s chicken sooley, wagyu beef cheek, Konkani lamb chop, and a standout chestnut paneer tikka. Mains include a perfectly creamy smoked butter chicken, while the Hyderabadi dal and naan basket round things out. The Masala Chai is the ideal finish; sweet, soothing, and just perfect after a hearty meal.
What’s On the bill
Prices lean towards the premium side. Starters sit around Dhs80–Dhs120, tandoor mains range from Dhs98–Dhs218. It’s a special spot that works just as well for a date night as it does for a dinner with friends or when you want to take someone visiting the city somewhere special.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Everything at The Bombay Club works in sync, the food, the space, the service, the atmosphere. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves Indian food. You’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for it.

Nando’s
When the craving for flame-grilled chicken hits, there’s really only one answer: Nando’s. The South Africanborn Afro-Portuguese inspired brand (just like me) has become a global favourite, but there’s something special about sitting down to a plate of peri-peri chicken here in Dubai. Maybe it’s the mix of spice levels (from lemon and herb to extra hot, depending on your bravery), or the fact that it reminds me of my late Portuguese grandmother who loved their bread. For me, it’s comfort food with a kick, casual, satisfying, and always consistent.

Indian cuisine is a world favourite (and mine), and for good reason. It’s so vast, comes packed with flavour and a range of spice levels. Hot Chicken
They say stereotypes exist for a reason and as a South African with a wellknown love of fried chicken, I giggled when my first day at What’s On came with Dave’s Hot Chicken. It reminded me of home in the most comforting way. There’s something sacred about sharing a meal, it’s never just about the food, it’s about the people around the table. Sitting with my new colleagues, passing plates, food becomes more than fuel. It’s a connection, and the ritual that turns colleagues into family.

Growing up in South Africa I was raised on food bursting with spice and flavour. Indian cuisine has always been close to our hearts. We celebrate with it and argue over who makes the best biryani. You don’t need a boarding pass to stock up, Hyperama in Dubai carries Woolworths products, so you can get your fix of home comforts right here. My must-have? Lekker Meat Shop
South Africans take their meat seriously. We even have our own word for barbecue, braai, and it’s more than just a way of cooking. EAT // BAR SNACKS
WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN
BITE-SIZED BRILLIANCE
Dubai’s bar scene is growing up, and the snacks are keeping pace, with clever, craveable bites that go far beyond the afterthought
Paradiso
In the past few years, Dubai’s bar scene has undergone a quiet revolution. The same audacity that transformed the city into a global dining capital is now being poured into the glass, with worldclass mixology, concept-driven lounges, and interiors as polished as anything in Tokyo, London, or New York. But the evolution doesn’t stop with the drinks.
Bar snacks, once an afterthought, a sad bowl of nuts or a solitary olive clinging to relevance, are now having a renaissance. They’re punchy, precise, and purposebuilt to elevate what you’re drinking. Call them snacks with ambition: tightly edited menus of craveable, clever bites that demand attention in their own right. Here are some of the city’s most surprising, unforgettable, and absolutely worth-the-hunt bar bites.
1920
Originally hidden behind a pastrami shop in Barcelona, Paradiso soared to global fame with its surreal design, theatrical cocktails, and secret-speakeasy charm, earning the title of World’s Best Bar in 2022. Now open at FIVE LUXE in JBR, its first international outpost brings the same imaginative spirit to Dubai, complete with floating hot air balloons, runaway carousel horses, and a sweeping bar that leads out to a vibrant terrace overlooking Ain Dubai. But beyond the cocktails, it’s the playful bar bites that elevate the experience. There’s truffle brioche oozing with buffalo mozzarella and provolone, mini chicken banh mi, luxe chicken nuggs topped with caviar, saffron paella croquettes crowned with shaved Manchego, and fingerfriendly patatas bravas with green and red mojo, all designed to be as fun and indulgent as the cocktail concoctions.
FIVE LUXE JBR, Sun to Wed 5pm to 2am, Thur to Sat 5pm to 3am. Tel: (0)4 455 9989. @paradisodubai
Perched high above the city on the 52nd floor of ICD Brookfield Place, 1920 channels old-school New York glamour with a sultry, speakeasy twist. Behind a red velvet curtain lies an Art Deco gem. Think plush booths, skyline views, and a live band setting the tone. While the cocktails dazzle, it’s the food that seals the deal. The truffle croque monsieur is pure indulgence, melty, rich, and unapologetically decadent. Or opt for the prawn cocktail, elegantly retro with a kick. 1920, ICD Brookfield Place, daily 5.30pm to 3am. Tel: (0)4 498 1920. @1920dubai
Salmon Guru
With its neon-lit interiors, mind-bending presentation, and flavour-forward drinks, this Madrid-born concept by mixology maestro Diego Cabrera brings a dose of theatrical flair to every pour. But the alchemy doesn’t end at the bar. Chef George’s Twisted Kitchen is where culinary creativity comes alive, crafting out-of-the-box bar bites that are designed to elevate, not outshine, the drinks. The tostada escalivada is a prime example: crystal sourdough piled with coal-grilled vegetables, sweet roasted onions, and crowned with torched brown-crust foie gras for a melt-in-your-mouth finish. Add to that cheeky bites like the braised oxtail croquettes or the smoked picanha tataki, and you’ve got a bar food lineup that’s just as daring as the drinks. And here’s a hot tip for those in the know, don’t leave without trying the Gilda. These intensely flavorful skewers of anchovy, olive, and pickled pepper are a salty, umami-packed homage to Spanish tapas tradition, and absolutely divine with a crisp, citrus-forward cocktail. Salmon Guru, The Opus by Omniyat, Business Bay, Mon to Fri 12.30pm to 2am, Sat and Sun 5pm to 2am. Tel: (0)52 814 9537. @salmongurudubai
Gaba
GABA has quietly carved out a spot in Dubai Marina’s dining scene, and it’s the kind of place you’ll want to keep in your back pocket. By day, it’s a serene tea lounge, but after dark, it transforms into a sultry speakeasy inspired by Tokyo’s hidden bars and Bangkok’s vibrant street food scene. The menu leans into Japanese Izakaya roots with a modern Pan-Asian twist. There’s charred edamame, Kaiso salads, and standout mini wagyu sliders with robata onion jam. While the offerings hint at a full-blown dinner menu, GABA still nails the art of refined bar bites. And on Wednesdays, there’s a fresh oyster special –just Dhs8 a slurp, until they sell out. Blind Tiger
Blind Tiger balances speakeasy intrigue with live music energy, and while the cocktails are undoubtedly the main act, the bites are quietly stepping into their own spotlight. Elegant and snackable, they’re just the thing to power a night on the dance floor with Katty Gold and her showstopping Cruise Band. Expect buttery Maine lobster rolls, fan-fried gyozas with a delicate crunch, and luxe mini tuna tartare tacos topped with gold flakes. Understated yet satisfying. Blind Tiger, Jumeirah Al Naseem, daily 5pm to 2am. Tel: (800) 323 232, @blindtigerdxb

BLIND TIGER, JUMEIRAH AL NASEEM
The Pour Point
Hidden deep within the marble-veined corridors of Jumeirah Al Naseem, past a spa and behind what feels like a concierge’s secret, you’ll find Blind Tiger. Quietly gaining momentum since opening in late 2022, it officially entered the big leagues five months ago, snagging a coveted spot on the 50 Best Discovery Bars list. That’s no small feat, and certainly no fluke.
The Scene
The energy here is part speakeasy, part live music venue. There’s a clear reverence for detail from the chinoiserie wallpaper and framed Bengali tiger artwork, to the vintage blue paneling and mirrored ceilings, and the crowd matches that tone. You’ll spot everyone from soul music aficionados to cocktail connoisseurs and well-dressed partygoers letting loose to the rhythm of a live band. On our visit, it wasn’t long before guests were up dancing to Tina Turner, whipped into a frenzy by the electric Katty Gold and her ever-so-slick Cruise Band.
The Sips
Tightrope Walker, a delicate botanical blend of Roku gin, sakura, and a silky foam top. The Illusionist is one for the curious: Ketel One, coffee infusion with a vanilla tonic. They’re as far away from cookie-cutter drinks as we’ve seen, in the best way.
The Bites
Cocktails here come with flair, and a theme. The vintage circus-style menu is playful and clever, with names like The Magician (a bourbon-mezcal number that’s rich and mysterious), and The
Food plays a supporting role, and arguably a little shy compared to its starry cocktail counterparts. Think fan-fried gyozas, Maine lobster rolls, and mini tuna tartare tacos dressed up with gold flakes. They’re good, just not quite as inspired as the drinks menu. We’d love to see Blind Tiger take more risks here, with bold, flavourforward bites to better complement the character of the venue.
The Service
With a full house and live music pulsing through the space, it’s refreshing to see high quality service. Our server kneeled beside us to catch our cocktail preferences above the volume, and returned with
recommendations that hit the mark. There’s theatre in the service too, like when the Clown cocktail was delivered with a literal red nose. It’s cheeky, and adds personality that fits the room.
The Extras
We followed a trail of glowing word-ofmouth recommendations to book in for a Saturday night and were rewarded with a standout live set from Katty Gold. She’s a powerhouse, and the band matches her energy note for note. A real headline act, rather than mere background music.
What’s On the bill
Expect to spend around Dhs680 for two, including three cocktails each and a few light bites.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
A stylish hideout with attitude, it’s one of the most distinctive and entertaining bars in the city.

Boubker Benjelloun
Museum of Humanity
Forest House Le Courbe
Dubai’s skyline is a gallery of ambition, but few buildings command the kind of attention that Boubker Benjelloun’s creations do. Benjelloun is an architect and real estate developer who has led projects across the Middle East, Europe, the USA, India, and Morocco. One of his most iconic projects is COMO Residences, s skyscraper curves skyward like a seashell carved by the wind with its layered terraces spiralling upward toward the clouds. The tower is scheduled for completion in 2028 and is being built on The Palm. In Morocco, Solara gleams with clean modern edges that catch the sunlight like a blade, yet its warmth holds true to the land beneath it. And then there is the Museum of Humanity under development in City Walk, where stone and metal are woven together to hold memory and meaning in walls that feel timeless.
But long before he was dreaming of redefining skylines, Benjelloun was a champion swimmer in Morocco. Hours in the pool taught him discipline and focus, but they also gave his imagination free rein.
“While moving through the water, I would imagine entire cities, shaping skylines and spaces in my mind with each lap. Those visions were vivid and constant, though it wasn’t until much later that I realised they were the foundation of a future in architecture,” Benjelloun said.
His path to architecture was not straight. Before embracing design, he trained as a dentist, a choice that might seem far from blueprints and cranes. But he remembers it as a masterclass in precision, patience, and the art of working with his hands. But even in the clinic, his mind lingered on spaces and structures.
“My involvement in real estate development in Casablanca drew me deep into the design process and reignited a creative passion I’d carried for years. Each step along the way, no matter how different, added layers to how I approach architecture today, blending technical discipline with an instinct for spaces that inspire,” he said.
This move into real estate development in Casablanca brought him back to his creative instincts and gave him the first thrill of seeing ideas become real. It was this first experience in development that gave him the joy of seeing ideas become real. Clarity came during his first major project in Morocco.
“I stood in a space I had imagined, now fully built. That moment of alignment, seeing an idea move from my mind into the physical world, was when I knew I’d found my purpose,” Benjelloun said.
That moment set the tone for a career defined by bold ideas, meticulous detail, and a vision that stretches from imagination to skyline.
Benjelloun’s vision has since expanded across continents, shaped by the cultures, climates, and traditions of every place he has worked. Today, his imagination has a global reach. From the sculptural terraces of COMO Residences in Dubai to daring developments in Europe, the USA, India, and Singapore, his projects command attention.
Boubker Benjelloun
“IT WASN’T JUST ABOUT PROVIDING SHELTER, IT WAS ABOUT RESTORING SELFRELIANCE AND DIGNITY”
“Each region carries its own rhythm, from cultural habits and climate to material traditions. I try to absorb those layers so the design feels globally relevant yet deeply connected to its local context.”
He believes architecture is never isolated, that a building is part of a living ecosystem, made up on the cultural, environmental, and emotional elements. For Benjelloun his philophy is that you have to listen before you draw.
That philosophy extends beyond architecture. Through his philanthropic project, B.Foundation, Benjelloun has helped rebuild a village in Ethiopia, restoring homes, schools, and irrigation systems.
“It wasn’t just about providing shelter, it was about restoring self-reliance and dignity,” he said.
Even with a career that spans the globe, Benjelloun knows the importance of pause. When he is not flying, planning, or visiting sites, he seeks out moments to clear his mind, exploring the outdoors, discovering new places, and enjoying time with family and friends.
“It’s in those pauses that fresh ideas often come to me,” he said.
For Benjelloun, architecture is more than buildings. It is a way to connect, to inspire, and to leave a mark that is both bold and deeply human. Every project, from towering cityscapes to intimate spaces, carries the vision, discipline, and purpose that began decades ago in a quiet pool in Morocco.
“I aim for a sense of wonder, that first moment of seeing something and feeling uplifted, but also comfort, belonging, and dignity. This is the essence of what I call Architecture for Humanity: creating spaces that not only inspire but also serve a deeper purpose, enriching the lives of those who experience them,” Benjelloun said.

ROUTINE RESET
How to get kids back into a school routine (without the tears)
Summer holidays are full of late nights, lazy mornings, and endless freedom, but as the kids are easing back into school, parents across the UAE know the struggle: how do you get children back into a school routine without meltdowns, moaning, or missed alarms?
“Getting back into the school routine can be a challenge, but with a little preparation, the transition can be smooth and stress-free for both children and parents,” says Dr Funke Baffour-Awuah, Corporate Head of Wellbeing at GEMS Education.
Here’s her expert advice, plus some bonus parent-approved hacks, to help you all ease back into term time without the morning meltdowns.
Protect the power hours
Sleep researchers call the hours before midnight the golden hours for restoration. As school begins, gradually bring bedtime forward by 15 minutes each night until kids are clocking in the right amount: nine to 11 hours for younger children, eight to 10 hours for teens. A well-rested brain can absorb new learning up to 40 per cent more effectively, a game-changing boost for the start of term.
Prime the mind for positivity
Neuroscience shows that simply anticipating something good can lower stress hormones and lift mood. As school begins, create a small “morning moment” with your child – a chat about the fun bits, from seeing friends to joining a new club. This mental rehearsal plants a seed of calm confidence as they ease back into school.
Rehearse the rhythm
Routine is the brain’s best friend. Keep a similar routine in the mornings before school, especially the first few weeks, wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed, and head out, without mad dashes and stress. This gives your child’s body clock and nervous system time to adjust.
Have conversations that count
Kids often return to school with what Dr Funke calls an “invisible backpack” full of emotions. Research shows that empathy from adults can dramatically reduce stress in minutes. Take time to listen, name their feelings (“I know you’re feeling nervous”), and offer reassurance. Emotional safety is a powerful springboard for academic success. With these small, proactive steps, the first week back doesn’t have to be a shock to the system –for you or your kids. As Dr Funke reminds us, “A smooth transition sets the tone for the whole term.”
HACKS
Refresh the lunch game
Get kids involved in planning and prepping their lunches. If they’ve had a say in the menu (yes, even if that means cucumber stars or quirky wraps), they’re more likely to eat well and have steady energy throughout the day.
Ease back on the screens
A sudden screen-time ban can spark rebellion, so taper off slowly. Start introducing screen-free evenings as school starts, swapping devices for board games, reading, or evening walks to help bodies and brains wind down.
Build in buffer time
Morning stress isn’t just about waking up late, it’s about cutting it too close. Factor in a 10-minute “just in case” window to the school run. Less rushing = fewer meltdowns (and less coffee-spilling for you).
Sync your own schedule
Parents, your mood sets the tone. If you’re rushing and stressed, kids will pick up on it. Adjust your own wakeup and prep routine so you’re not scrambling either.
Limit big life changes as term starts If possible, avoid major schedule changes (like travel, new extracurriculars, or big home projects) as schools starts. A calm, predictable home environment makes the transition much smoother.
Review school essentials together
Go over the timetable, homework expectations, and any after-school activities as a family. This way, there are no “surprise” late days or PE kit panic moments in the first few weeks.
Stay flexible
Despite all the prep, the first few weeks can be bumpy. Build in time for early nights, quiet afternoons, and extra patience as everyone adjusts.

INSIDE THE ALL-NEW FITnGLAM
A women-only fitness campus in Nad Al Sheba Mall now open for enrollment
Dubai doesn’t do things halfway, especially when it comes to fitness. And FitnGlam’s new 21,000-square-foot women-only gym in Nad Al Sheba Mall is proof. It’s the fourth location for the homegrown brand, and by far its most ambitious. FitnGlam has built its name by delivering luxe, women-focused training in a city that’s obsessed with boutique wellness. This new opening takes that concept and scales it up into a fullblown fitness campus. With state-of-the-art equipment, spa-level recovery tools, and boutique studio programming, all under one seriously polished roof.
Reformer Pilates room
A full-scale fitness facility
Yes, there are weights, more than you’ll know what to do with, and enough topspec equipment to rival a Technogym showroom. But you’ll also find a 25-metre, five-lane pool (opening soon), five boutique fitness studios, and a dedicated recovery zone that could hold its own against most wellness resorts.
Designed to support every phase of the training-to-recovery cycle, the recovery facilities include cold plunge pools, an infrared salt sauna, and private massage rooms, the kind of amenities typically reserved for elite athlete training centres or destination spas.
Five boutique studios
One of the biggest differentiators here is the class offering. It houses five separate boutique studios, run in partnership with The Platform Studios team, each focused on a different modality, from strength and conditioning to mobility, cycling, Pilates and more.
You could hit a different studio every day of the week and still have classes left to try. This setup is ideal for women who want variety without having to bounce between gyms, and it allows FitnGlam to stay on the pulse of fitness trends, with flexible programming and room to evolve. There’s also a private Reformer Pilates room tucked away for tailored instruction.
Recovery is built in
Plenty of gyms talk about recovery, but FitnGlam built for it. Instead of a token foam roller station or a sad massage chair, there’s a full recovery suite designed to help you reset and rebuild. You’ll find two Longevity cold plunge tubs, an infrared salt room, and private rooms for massage therapy. It’s a smart shift: with recovery baked into the offering, members can make real progress without burning out.
Community-driven
FitnGlam champions empowerment and community, but with a slightly curated twist. Expect members-only events, wellness seminars, and invite-only workshops alongside the regular schedule of classes. That said, it’s not aiming to be a social freefor-all. The brand leans into exclusivity, with its sleek aesthetics, intentionally undisclosed pricing, and polished membership model. If you’re after a casual, come-one-come-all gym, this might not be for you. But for women looking for privacy and premium facilities, this is the place.
MEMBERSHIPS
FitnGlam offers a range of membership tiers, including:
•Gym + Classes + Pool Access (including access to Hyrox classes via the adjoining unisex FitCode gym)
•Gym + Classes + Reformer Pilates
All packages include two personal training sessions and an initial fitness assessment, with the option to purchase additional PT sessions as needed.

Go hard, go Lagree
From LA to Dubai: Bodyrock brings the original Lagree home
On a Saturday morning, you could be anywhere, in bed, on the beach, at brunch. But instead, we’re on the Megaformer, locked into a Lagree class at Bodyrock, knees shaking, core firing, holding a lunge that feels like it’s never going to end. And weirdly… we’re into it.
So what is Lagree?
People often throw Lagree into the Pilates mix. In fact, it’s not Pilates. “Lagree is a method, not a name,” says Tara, founder, sole owner, and undeniable star of Bodyrock. It’s a high-intensity, low-impact workout that targets muscular strength and endurance through slow, controlled movements on the Megaformer machine. The workout engages muscles deeply, activating your core and providing a fullbody burn, all without putting strain on your joints.
Why Lagree stands out
•Builds muscular strength and endurance
•Tones and sculpts your body (yes, expect your abs to really feel it)
•Keeps your heart rate elevated between 120 and 140 bpm, significantly higher than Pilates, which averages about 90 bpm, meaning you burn far more calories
•Boosts cardiovascular fitness
•Enhances balance, coordination, and body awareness
•Is safe and adaptable for most fitness levels, making it a healthy alternative to high-impact workouts like CrossFit, which can be tough on the spine and joints
The Bodyrock experience
Bodyrock isn’t just another fitness studio, it’s the official home of Lagree in Dubai, with classes based on the original Lagree method from LA. And at the centre of it all is Tara. She doesn’t just lead the class; she drives the energy in the room. She’s passionate, supportive, and right there with you, calling out names mid-move and cheering you on while holding the plank (even when you’re about to drop). She reminds you: “The shake is good. The shake means it’s working.”
The final word
Lagree keeps your heart rate up while activating muscles you didn’t even know you had. It’s a full-body workout that tones, strengthens, and challenges endurance, all while being kind to your joints. And at Bodyrock, there’s more than just Lagree. With a fully equipped gym and additional group classes upstairs, it’s a space that has it all. For anyone looking for a workout that does it all without the risk of high-impact injury, Lagree at Bodyrock is the perfect place to start.

SPA REVIEW:
Talise Spa, Burj Al Arab
THE SPA
When it comes to Dubai landmarks, few shine brighter than the Burj Al Arab. Stepping inside for the first time feels every bit as glamorous as you’d expect, and tucked within this iconic hotel is the equally dazzling Talise Spa, a serene sanctuary suspended high above the Arabian Gulf. Spread across separate ladies’ and gentlemen’s facilities, Talise Spa offers a sense of exclusivity and privacy. Everything about the spa exudes quiet opulence, from the intricate design details to the plush relaxation areas.
THE SETTING
Talise Spa is as much about the setting as the treatments themselves. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and frame breathtaking views of the water. From the sauna you can watch jetskiers carving through the Gulf, while the relaxation areas offer a front-row seat to one of Dubai’s most spectacular panoramas. Even walking between the facilities feels indulgent, hushed corridors, soft ambient lighting, and the calming scent of essential oils drifting through the air. It’s a setting designed to silence the outside world and
centre you in the moment, with the Arabian Gulf stretching endlessly in view.
THE TREATMENTS
I booked in for a 60-minute full-body massage, and from the very first touch, it was clear I was in expert hands. My therapist, from Indonesia, combined skill and intuition to ease away every knot with precision. She worked with a rhythmic flow that felt both deeply restorative and highly personalised, checking in discreetly on pressure but never breaking the sense of calm. The experience struck the perfect balance between indulgent pampering and genuine therapeutic benefit and a treatment that lingered long after I’d left the table. The Gulf views from the treatment room only amplified the sense of escape, reminding you that this isn’t just any massage, it’s a Burj Al Arab experience.
THE FACILITIES
Beyond the treatment rooms, the spa’s facilities feel like an extension of the Burj’s opulent spirit. Guests can unwind in the indoor infinity pool, soak in the jacuzzi, or heat things up in the sauna, all available to both spa and hotel guests. Small touches
elevate the experience: staff topping up chilled water bottles before you even realise you’re thirsty, or guiding you seamlessly between facilities.
THE SERVICE
Service here is polished but never overbearing. Every member of staff I encountered was warm, thoughtful, and genuinely attentive with the kind of hospitality that makes you feel looked after in the smallest of ways. From the moment I checked in, staff took the time to explain the flow of the spa, guide me through the facilities, and ensure I felt at ease. My therapist showed real expertise, tailoring the treatment to my needs without it ever feeling formulaic, while attendants anticipated small requests, from replenishing amenities to offering herbal tea after my massage before I could even think to ask. It’s this combination of world-class professionalism and instinctive attentiveness that makes Talise Spa stand out.
THE EXPERIENCE
There’s no denying that a visit to Talise Spa feels like a quintessential Dubai indulgence and one that lives up to the jewel-box reputation of the Burj Al Arab. The only note? The treatment rooms themselves could benefit from a gentle refresh to match the grandeur of the views. That said, the moment you sink into the massage table and let the therapist work their magic, any minor details fade into the background.
WHAT”S ON THE BILL
Treatments from around Dhs800 for adults and Dhs700 for kids. A splurge, yes, but an unforgettable way to experience one of Dubai’s most iconic addresses.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
A spa that matches the sparkle of its setting, Talise Spa is the crown jewel of relaxation at the Burj Al Arab.

HELLO, Copenhagen
FDiscovering a Hygge way of life
rom the bustling way of life here in Dubai, I found myself on a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark. Leaving behind my to-do lists and calendar meetings to slow down and enjoy life in the slow lane. IN MOTION
How to eat, stroll, and soak up the Spanish capital like a local, one perfect day at a time
Madrid, like any other millions-strong capital cities, is a shapeshifter, easy to adore but hard to pin down. To museum lovers, it’s a bottomless trove of Goyas, Velázquezes, Sorollas, and Picassos; to partiers, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure of world-class techno, house, flamenco, jazz – any scene you love, any night of the week. Food lovers may have the most fun: Dinner might be a handful of olives and Sangria at a glorious hole-in-the-wall tapas bar, a nine-course tasting feast at a Michelin-starred gastro haunt, or anything in-between.
Today Madrid is a patchwork quilt of cultures hailing not just from around the Iberian Peninsula but far, far beyond. Here are the reasons why there’s never been a better time to visit the Spanish capital – plus a smattering of insider tips to knit you straight into the city’s fabric from the moment you touch down.
MORNING: HIT THE STREETS
First things first: walk. Madrid is a walker’s paradise. Start your day early on the Gran Vía, the city’s beating commercial heart, where stunning early 20th-century facades frame a stretch of high street stores, cafés, and classic Madrid hustle. It’s Madrid’s own Oxford Street, but with more sunshine and less rush. You’ll find Uniqlo’s flagship spread over three glorious floors, plenty of Zara stores (this is Spain, after all), and a massive Primark that’s practically a landmark in itself.
But don’t stay on the main drag for long. Slip down a side street and into Malasaña, Madrid’s effortlessly cool, boho-chic neighbourhood. Think Berlin energy with a Latin twist: vintage shops, record stores, street art, and people who somehow look great without trying.
Refuel at HanSo Café (@hansocafe), a gem of a coffee shop with an easygoing, communal vibe. Their flat white is fantastic, and the homemade matcha cake is equally rave-worthy. Coffee nerds will appreciate the ever-changing rotation of beans, from local Spanish roasters to global indie favourites.
From there, it’s a 20-minute walk east to El Retiro Park, Madrid’s leafy heart. This former royal retreat is all fountains, sculptures, tree-lined paths, and dreamy vistas, the perfect place to slow down. Don’t miss the Palacio de Cristal, a gorgeous glass pavilion often used for art installations, or the Estanque Grande, the grand boating lake. Hop in a little rowboat and paddle under the sun for some classic Madrid leisure.

AFTERNOON: ART & CULTURE FIX
Once you’ve worked up a cultural appetite, it’s time for the Golden Triangle of Art: the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofía museums, all within walking distance of each other and essential to Madrid’s artistic soul.
For classical lovers, the Prado (museodelprado.es) is an embarrassment of riches, Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Rubens and more, all in one stately space. A private tour is a wise splurge here; with so much to see, a guide helps bring context to centuries of art.
Next, wander to the Reina Sofía (museoinasofia.es), Madrid’s modern art juggernaut. The main draw is Picasso’s “Guernica”, a mural-sized anti-war masterpiece that hits you in the chest. Surrealism fans will also love the works of Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, while contemporary art lovers will find rotating exhibits that are as sensual as they are surprising.
feels more like a performance space than a restaurant. Industrial décor, think meat hooks, steel trays, and open prep stations, sets the stage for a menu that’s all about playful precision: raw ingredients presented like lab specimens, then torched, plated, or assembled tableside with tweezers. Go early or book ahead as this place fills fast.
EVENING: TAPAS, TECHNIQUE & GLOBAL FLAVOURS
Madrid’s food scene is the stuff of legends. Start your night with a classic tapas crawl, best done with no map and an open mind. Order whatever the locals are eating: rich Spanish omelette (ask for it slightly runny), jamón croquettes, vinegary gildas, and plenty of tinto de verano (the locals’ refreshing red wine spritz).
If you’re craving something different, Madrid still delivers. Kaito (@kaito.handrollbar), the city’s original handroll bar, is a minimalist gem where toro, eel and uni are prepared with care and handed over one perfect bite at a time. If you’re a fan of Dubai’s Kokoro, this spot will feel like home.
For heartier fare, check out China Crown (@chinacrownrestaurante), an upscale Cantonese restaurant where the Peking duck is carved tableside and the xiao long bao are delicate, soup-filled perfection. There’s a fantastic eight-course degustation menu where the team recreates the flavours of Imperial China and features spring rolls, fried rice, a dim sum selection and a glorious plate of gleaming duck for just 70 euros per person.
For an all-in-one culinary playground, head to the iconic Mercado de San Miguel (@mercadosanmiguel). This buzzing glass-and-iron structure near Plaza Mayor is packed with stalls serving everything from Galician oysters to manchego cheese, cured meats, craft vermouth, and Basque pintxos. It’s a feast for all the senses.
Prefer something more experimental? Madrid’s nueva cocina scene finds its wildest expression at Sala de Despiece (@saladedespiece), a compact, butcher-themed hotspot that

Just off Madrid’s iconic Gran Vía in the lively Plaza del Carmen, Thompson Madrid offers a mid-century modern retreat with a cosmopolitan edge. Blending the elegance of Spanish design with a New York sensibility, the hotel sets the tone from the moment you enter: cobblestone-style pavers echo the historic streets outside, while suitcase-shaped counters in the lobby nod to the spirit of travel.
Rooms and suites are spacious yet intimate, with rich materials like marble, wood, and leather, softened by neutral tones and warm lighting. Floor-to-ceiling windows and inner courtyards ensure even interior rooms are filled with natural light. Inside, king-size beds, curated artwork, plush seating, and luxurious bathrooms with rain showers and high-end finishes offer a residential feel. Technology, including automated shades and integrated sound systems, is seamlessly woven into the design.
The rooftop terrace is a standout, with an infinity pool, sweeping city views, a small cluster of loungers (editor’s note: get there early to bag a coveted bed), and a stylish bar perfect for day-to-night relaxation.

The RitzCarlton Ras Al Wadi Desert
THE STAY
The moment you pull into the long, winding driveway of The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, you know you’re in for something extraordinary. Set in the heart of a protected nature reserve, this resort offers a stay unlike anywhere else in the UAE. Whether you’re coming from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or further afield, the contrast between the city’s hustle and the serenity of the desert hits immediately. This isn’t just a weekend getaway, it’s a chance to reset. The level of care begins from the welcome drink at check-in to the personalised itinerary recommendations offered by the concierge. Everything is designed to let you experience the desert in the most luxurious, yet authentic way possible.
THE SETTING
The sprawling desert reserve is home to oryx, gazelles, camels, and even wild foxes. You’ll spot them wandering freely between villas or lounging under ghaf trees. At night, the sky becomes a canvas of stars, unobstructed by city lights. Mornings begin with golden sunrises casting long shadows over the dunes, while evenings bring dramatic colours and total calm. The natural beauty is enhanced by the resort’s unobtrusive architecture, which blends seamlessly into the sand-hued landscape.
THE ROOM
We stayed in an Al Rimal Pool Villa, and
it was nothing short of breathtaking. With high ceilings, and natural dark wood finishes, the interiors reflect the desert’s calm without sacrificing modern comfort. The bathroom had a deep standalone tub, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let in endless natural light. But the real luxury was the private outdoor space: a terrace with a sun lounger, a shaded dining area and a temperature-controlled private pool overlooking the dunes. It felt like our own desert sanctuary. Waking up to wildlife grazing near the pool and ending the day with a dip under the stars made for an unforgettable experience.
THE FOOD & DRINK
Dining at this hotel is full-on experience. Breakfast at Kaheela was a generous, global affair with fresh Arabic mezze, perfectly poached eggs, and more juice options than you can count. Our dinner at Gobi took us on a pan-Asian journey that hit all the right spots. Sushi with caviar, Omani lobster and the yummiest chocolate fondant were just some of the highlights. A private dinner at The Paddock took the experience up a notch. Who doesn’t want to have a private chef and staff prepare mouth watering baked camembert with honey while watching the camels roam around outside. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and every dish felt crafted with care.
THE ACTIVITIES
Whether you’re craving action or relaxation, there’s plenty to keep you busy. There are falconry shows, and nature walks when it isn’t too hot and villas come with bikes for guests to ride around the resort. There is also horseback riding offered. The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers desert-inspired treatments and The Rainforest combines European hydrothermal culture with Middle Eastern bathing rituals, creating a rejuvenating sanctuary in the Arabian desert.
THE EXPERIENCE
The true magic of the resort is in its balance. It offers complete escapism, but with every comfort accounted for. The staff are incredibly warm, with genuine hospitality and they are always going the extra mile. Every interaction, from housekeeping to the spa, felt thoughtful and considered. There’s a personalised touch that elevates the stay.
WHAT TO PACK
