EDITOR’S LETTER
GO ON A JOURNEY WITH US
Some cities are defined by their history, others by their future. Abu Dhabi, beautifully, is defined by both.
This month’s cover feature takes us on a journey through Abu Dhabi then and now, from the bustling souks, heritage corners, and cultural traditions that remain the soul of the capital, to the skyscrapers, islands, and modern icons that point to the city’s ever-evolving tomorrow. It’s a fascinating balance of old and new, and a reminder that culture and progress can walk hand in hand.
But the issue doesn’t stop there. We’ve also gone hunting for the yummiest mocktails in the city, because sometimes you want your evening out to be a little more refreshing than boisterous. And for those days when the mood is less about getting dressed up and more about comfort and convenience, we’ve rounded up the best drive-thrus in Abu Dhabi. Whether you’re craving a quick coffee on the go or a guiltypleasure burger from the comfort of your car, we’ve got you covered. In short, there’s something for every kind of appetite, and every kind of mood.
Beyond food and drink, our pages celebrate the exhibitions currently happening across the UAE, giving culture-lovers plenty of reasons to get inspired. For travellers looking further afield, we journey to Italy and Denmark, destinations that show how exploration opens new doors and perspectives.
And of course, I’ve been out exploring too. A stargazing trip in Al Qua’a desert left me in awe beneath beautiful skies, while a trip to the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert offered that rare mix of indulgence and wilderness. Waking up to baby gazelles grazing outside your villa in the middle of the desert is a moment you don’t forget quickly.
It’s now been three months since I began my journey in the UAE, and what strikes me most is the variety this place offers. From the timeless to the trendy, from heritage alleys to futuristic skylines, from a perfectly mixed mocktail to a drive-thru indulgence at midnight, it’s all part of life here. That’s the spirit we’ve tried to capture in this issue: Abu Dhabi as it was, as it is, and as it’s becoming.
Art Undistracted is an adults-only after-hours experience at teamLab Phenomena, Abu Dhabi’s most innovative digital art space. With no children under 18 allowed, the galleries become serene, immersive environments where light, sound and motion respond to your presence. Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Tuesday Le Roux
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month we chat to a Dubai-based presenter and content creator Tuesday Le Roux (@tuesday_leroux), with over 1.3 million followers and a passion for cars, cutting-edge tech, and luxe properties. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she’s gone from hosting TV and radio back home to working with the world’s biggest automotive brand, Supercar Blondie, and presenting for names like Mercedes-Benz, Steve Harvey, Etihad Airways, and F1.
As much as I adore the luxe life, my perfect escape is in RAK, glamping under the stars, breathing in that crisp, clean air, and going off-roading or hiking during the day. Then it’s all about making a fire, swapping stories, and just soaking in the night sky with zero light pollution.
Anywhere I can find jaw-dropping cars, futuristic tech, or outrageous mansions. If it makes me say “wow” out loud, I’m in.
This might sound random, but my happy place is DNA Board Game Café. Not only is the food unreal (seriously, chef’s kiss), but I love gathering my friends for a night of games, laughter, and a little friendly competition. The vibe is so cosy, the food is amazing and I have to admit… I’m ridiculously competitive.
@eat.play.dna
Honestly? Online. I’m not a mall person, the parking, the crowds, the “where did I park my car?” moment… every single time.
I’m obsessed with stand-up comedy. Laughing is my ultimate reset button - there’s nothing like watching a comic turn the little everyday things we all experience into something completely unexpected and hilarious. It’s watching a creative genius at work, and it always leaves me feeling lighter.
I don’t party often, but when I do, it’s at Stick No Bills. It’s got culture, “get your butt on the dance floor” music, and the kind of crowd that makes you feel instantly at home. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, Aaron and Jeff always leave feeling like you’re part of the family.
@sticknobillsdxb
Yas Island is pure magic - from theme parks to beaches to amazing restaurants. It’s like stepping into a bubble of happiness, tied up with a big bow of vacation vibes.

WORDS BY: LEONIE WAGNER
It’s a windy day in the capital, the kind that sends flags flapping against poles and sets ripples dancing across the water. Boats and yachts in the marina sway rythmically with the wind, while the UAE flag towers above the Heritage Village, tucked behind palm trees on the Corniche breakwater near Marina Mall. On this side of the city, the pace slows, and the Heritage Village offers a glimpse into life before the skyscrapers and highways reshaped the skyline.
The Heritage Village, which opened in 1996, is a living museum of Abu Dhabi’s Bedouin past. The space is laid out like a small, self-contained town, with sandy paths winding between low, fort-style walls. Beyond the wooden doors and Biscoff-brown fort, visitors are led from a mock souk at the entrance to workshops, museums, and traditional homes. The souk hums with life, vibrant with stalls selling Ghutras, Kanduras, embroidered abayas, jewellery, camels, and other souvenirs. A stroll here already feels like stepping back in time. The colours, textures, and scents of the goods give a small taste of the markets that were once at the heart of Emirati towns.
The Al-Saman Museum is the first stop. Named after Salem Ibrahim Mohammad Al Saman, a businessman from Ras Al Khaimah, it houses portraits of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed and Al Saman, along with coins, swords, and daggers. In the centre, a gold plaque displays Sheikh Zayed’s words: “We should preserve our traditions and national heritage. We should stick to our roots and our Arabic and Islamic traditions.” The Heritage Village feels like a living echo of this advice, every courtyard, stall, and workshop keeping the past alive.
Abu Dhabi itself grew slowly. Bedouin tribes moved between the coast and desert in search of water and grazing land. They fished, dived for pearls, herded camels, and farmed dates, following the rhythms of the Gulf. In the 18th century, fresh water was discovered on an island off the coast. A small settlement grew there and was named Abu Dhabi, or “Father of the Gazelle,” after a legend of a gazelle leading tribesmen to the spring. Life revolved around fishing, pearling, camel herding, and date farming. The Bani Yas tribal confederation, led by the Al Nahyan family, became the dominant presence. Oil discoveries in the late 1950s changed everything. Under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the settlement grew rapidly into a modern capital by 1971, with roads, schools, hospitals, and housing reshaping the landscape.

The Heritage Village itself is a carefully designed snapshot of traditional Emirati life. Archaeological replicas include the Al Hili tomb, a Bronze Age burial site with carved scenes of people and animals at its entrances, and the Al Hili Settlement, a 4,000-year-old colony built from bricks and stones. Walking through these quiet areas feels almost reverential. That’s until an Egyptian Goose perched in a tree breaks the silence with its high-pitched honk. Then, from strategically placed speakers, Mshabehin Zayed, a song by Hussain Al Jassmi begins to play. The song is a tribute to Sheikh Zayed, celebrating his values and the unity he inspired. It drifts across the courtyards and craft rooms bringing the past to life in vivid ways. Fishing dhows and abras are on
display, reminding visitors of a time when the surrounding waters were a lifeline for traders and pearl divers. In one low-ceilinged room, the scent of cardamom, saffron, and gahwa draws you in. A woman in traditional dress offers Arabic coffee in tiny paper cups, poured from a silver dallah, rich with saffron and served without milk. In another corner, a woman works a bright green karjooja, embroidering a Zarri dress with silver and gold thread. Nearby, a Bedouin weaver sits on the ground, creating a red, black, and white rug using Al Sadu, the traditional floor loom weaving that produces cushions, rugs, and camel saddles. Watching them work, it’s easy to see how these crafts carried family stories and desert life across generations.
Outside, the air smells of hay and animal musk. It leads to a sandy path that opens onto a courtyard laid out like a traditional desert village. Here, white Arabian oryx calves move quietly in their pen, an Arabian horse shifts its weight nearby, and a camel chews slowly in the shade. Further along, is the Bedouin camp with a cluster of tents woven from goat and sheep hair, offering shade in summer and warmth in winter. Surrounding the camp are traditional homes that show the ingenuity of early residents.
Some are made from ghaf wood and palm leaves, others from stone, sackcloth, or the coarse hair of goats and sheep, reflecting the materials available in the desert. Every wall and doorway tells a story of survival and adaptation, a reminder of how people once lived long before the high-rises appeared.
Walking past the camp, you can see how the village balances form and function. Homes were built to suit the environment. These Arish shelters made from palm fronds are lightweight and cool in the heat, while stone houses from mountainous regions protect families from the winter chill. Rooms are simple, practical, and communal. Each structure holds traces of daily life: a small fire pit for cooking, mats for sitting, and storage for food and water. These details make it easy to imagine children running along the sandy paths, herding animals, or helping with chores, long before the hum of engines and the glitter of glass towers.
The village also preserves the practices that shaped Emirati identity. In the weaving area, women spin and dye wool, chant poetry, and exchange family news. They are the keepers of Al Sadu, which was never just a craft. Its patterns symbolise nature, animals, and tribal identity, connecting households across the desert. Similarly, the
Zarri embroidery on the karjooja tells stories in thread and silver, a reminder that clothing was not only functional but a form of expression, culture, and pride.
Every corner of the Heritage Village offers a lesson in resilience and tradition. The Al Hili tomb and settlement connect the village to a deeper past, a time when people built with stone and brick, buried their dead with care, and carved their stories into entrances and walls. The artifacts, the homes, and the animals together recreate a living snapshot of history. Visitors can watch camels, oryx, and horses in their pens, wander past the Bedouin tents, and step into spaces where the air smells faintly of hay, spices, and the desert itself.
Leaving the Heritage Village, the hum of the city drifts back in, but the calm of the courtyards and pathways stays with you. The village is more than a collection of replicas and displays. It is a living memory of Abu Dhabi’s origins, the Bedouin spirit, and the traditions that continue to shape the city today. Walking its paths, listening to the music, smelling the spices, and watching the artisans work, it is easy to see where Abu Dhabi came from and how its culture endures. The Heritage Village is a reminder that the city’s story is not only about buildings and oil but about the people, their crafts, and their connection to the land and sea that created a community that would grow into a capital.

FROM SOUKS TO SKYSCRAPERS
Abu Dhabi’s journey from tradition to transformation, as new islands rise and the skyline reaches for the clouds.
WORDS BY: LEONIE WAGNER
If Abu Dhabi were a soundtrack, it would be centuries in the making. In the 17th century, the city’s melody was the rustle of palm leaves in the breeze, the high-pitched bleat of camels and the gentle lap of waves along the Corniche.
Now the tune has shifted. The beeping of cranes cuts through the air, delivery scooters hum down busy streets and taxis call out with impatient honks. Bright lights spill from towers that seem to rise higher every week. It is a chorus of progress layered over the soft swish of the sea.
Not long ago, Abu Dhabi was a quiet fishing town where the soundtrack was the creak of wooden dhows, the cry of gulls and the wind moving over the desert. The skyline was low, the streets unhurried. Mangroves hugged the shore and golden dunes rolled into the horizon.
Today, the view is a forest of towers and cranes. Streets pulse with light and movement. Malls brim with designer labels. Parks and promenades pull families out long after dark. What was once a modest port has grown into a glittering capital, rewriting its own story in steel, glass and ambition.
This once tranquil oasis is now a dynamic metropolis, its skyline evolving before our eyes. Everywhere you look, new developments are reshaping the capital. Al Maryah Island, with its sleek financial district, has become a symbol of Abu Dhabi’s global ambition, while the Saadiyat Cultural District blends art, architecture and heritage, housing world-class museums and cultural institutions. On the horizon, Fahid Island promises to be a first-of-its-kind wellness and sustainable community, with green spaces and Fitwel certification setting a benchmark for healthy urban living.
Behind these projects are architects and planners whose work is defining the city’s identity. Gensler contributed to the Abu Dhabi Financial Centre on Al Maryah Island, integrating sustainability with strategic planning. Dewan Architects & Engineers, founded by Mohamed Al Assam, infuse regional culture into residential, commercial and institutional spaces. Foster + Partners lead in environmental planning and energy efficiency, while MZ Architects, with offices in Abu Dhabi, Lebanon and Qatar, leave their mark through master planning and high-rises. Aedas pairs research-driven global expertise with local insight, keeping the city’s growth innovative and grounded.
For Tariq Shaikh and Todd Pilgreen, the Principals and Co-Managing Directors Gensler Middle East Abu Dhabi’s skyline has evolved from a collection of landmark structures into a more connected, human-centric urban fabric.
Shaikh and Pilgreen said Abu Dhabi’s strength lies in balancing global ambition with deep cultural roots. Its architecture is less about sheer height or scale and more about creating spaces true to the emirate that also appeal to a cosmopolitan audience. For Gensler, that means merging modern design with heritage touches so projects connect both emotionally and functionally.
“The next decade will see Abu Dhabi deepen its focus on sustainable urbanism, mixed-use integration and cultural placemaking. Expect more walkable, human-scale developments woven into the skyline, alongside bold, future-ready infrastructure. The ‘20-minute city’ framework will continue to guide planning, making neighbourhoods more self-sufficient and interconnected,” Pilgreen said.

Fahid Island
Beyond the inconvenience of construction dust in the air, there is a quiet thrill building. The city is in the middle of a transformation, with Saadiyat Island, Al Maryah Island and now Fahid Island shaping a new chapter in Abu Dhabi’s story. The vision set by the founders is unfolding in steel, glass and sand, and it is spectacular to watch.
Some of the jewels in this new crown are already here. The Louvre Abu Dhabi stands like a gleaming dome on the water, its honeycomb roof catching the light. The soon-to-open Guggenheim promises to be a cultural powerhouse. The Zayed National Museum, with its soaring falcon wings, is a love letter to the nation’s heritage. Even the Apple Store at The Galleria Mall makes a statement, its cascading water feature drawing curious eyes across the plaza.
At The Galleria, men in white kanduras sip coffee beneath the glow of designer storefronts, a far cry from the days when they gathered in a majlis on red, black and white sadu rugs. The marble floors beneath them now shine as brightly as the city’s transformation. Women who might have been weaving on the floor now drift past Dior, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga, pausing to admire each window display.
Over on Reem Island, the mood shifts. Laughter bounces through Reem Park as children race at the skate park, their voices carrying past colourful art walls and the glowing lights of food trucks selling burgers, smoothies and ice cream. Down at Reem Beach, the water glints under the evening sky as orca boats lit in neon cruise slowly along the shoreline.
Saadiyat Island offers yet another rhythm. At the Saadiyat Beach Club, the sand is blindingly white, the sea breathtakingly turquoise. People often compare it to the Maldives, but Saadiyat is no imitation. It is an upgrade, with its own character and a kind of understated luxury that feels entirely Abu Dhabi.
And then there is Fahid Island. Set between the adrenaline of Yas Island and the cultural gravitas of Saadiyat, Fahid Island stretches across 11 kilometres of coastline and comes with a price tag of over Dhs 40 billion. One side offers 4.6km of white sandy beaches, the other a frame of peaceful mangrove forests. It is designed as a wellness sanctuary, with lush podium-level gardens, shaded yoga pavilions and three infinity pools. Kids’ play zones spill over with colour and laughter, while the waterfront promenade hums with volleyball games, paddle courts and cafés serving cold-pressed juices.
The island is connected to everything that makes Abu Dhabi special. Theme parks and roller coasters are 15 minutes away. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a quick drive in the opposite direction. Zayed International Airport is close enough to make weekend getaways seamless. The residential buildings aim high on sustainability, targeting Fitwel 2-star ratings, Estidama 3 Pearl, and LEED Gold. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak has played a vital role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s cultural, tourism, real estate and entertainment landscape. As chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Aldar Properties, Miral, Aldar Academies and Image Nation, he has been at the forefront of developments that blend heritage with innovation, steering projects that have redefined the city’s skyline and strengthened its position on the world stage.
As chairman of Aldar, he described Abu Dhabi as a “world-class environment” that is a thriving, global destination where heritage and innovation combine to create a place to live, work and explore. “Sustainable and inclusive development has been a critical part of this success, which is why Aldar remains focused on delivering communities that reflect the values and ambitions of the UAE. Fahid Island is the latest chapter in that journey, building on the success of Saadiyat and Yas Islands to offer a new benchmark in premium waterfront living, wellness and sustainable design,” Mubarak said.
Abu Dhabi’s development is not just about gleaming towers or luxury resorts; it also reflects the city’s commitment to education and the development of its people. Investing in knowledge and learning has always been central to the
emirate’s vision, shaping both its culture and its future.
The Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi reinforces this through initiatives like the “Our Traditions, Our Roots” campaign, launched in November 2024, which aims to weave the nation’s heritage into the modern cityscape. Speaking at the launch, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak said, “Culture touches every aspect of our lives, informing our identity as a people and a nation and culture is at the heart of our vision at DCT Abu Dhabi.”
This focus on people echoes the words of the nation’s founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. “The real asset of any advanced nation is its people, especially the educated ones, and the prosperity and success of the people are measured by the standard of their education.”
Today, as cranes mark the skyline and museums and schools rise alongside offices and hotels, his vision continues to guide Abu Dhabi’s growth, blending progress with culture, heritage and learning.
The city pulses with life and possibility, each light along the streets and promenades a note in its own melody, echoing the line from Coldplay’s Fix You: ‘lights will guide you home’.

MORE THAN STARS, A DESERT NIGHT TO REMEMBER IN AL QUA’A
A stargazing trip where the skies stayed quiet, but the desert adventure more than made up for it
WORDS: LIAM JOYCE
There are nights in the desert when the stars put on a dazzling display, glittering like diamonds scattered across the sky. Our evening with Arabian Wanderers in Al Qua’a desert wasn’t quite like that. The stars were shy, peeking out only occasionally through the hazy clouds. But here’s the twist: the lack of a sparkling sky didn’t take away from the magic of the experience. If anything, it made every other element shine brighter.
The journey
The trip began with a drive that felt like part of the adventure itself. Leaving the city behind, we wound through highways that soon melted into open desert roads, dunes rising up on either side. The fading sun painted the sand in golden and rose hues, turning the journey into something cinematic. By the time we reached Al Qua’a, the horizon stretched endlessly, vast and breathtaking.
The setting
Even without a canopy of stars, the desert setting was unforgettable. Golden dunes rolled on in every direction, silent and serene. A crisp breeze carried with it a sense of calm you don’t often find in city life. Standing there, you felt dwarfed by nature’s scale, the kind of perspective only the desert can give.
The activities
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just about stargazing. First came sandboarding, a thrill that had us racing and tumbling down slopes of soft sand, laughter echoing across the dunes. It’s important to note that we went on this adventure during one of the hottest weekends in the UAE, yes, crazy, but well worth it. As twilight deepened, we gathered around a fire, playing games and sharing stories, a group of strangers quickly feeling like old friends. From Portuguese to Spanish, British English to Urdu, the circle felt like a little United Nations in Al Qua’a as people bonded and showed off their competitive side. Dinner was a hearty barbecue feast of meats and some local mezze. Plates filled with meats, salads, and warm bread were devoured under the night sky which was filled with stars, until they got shy and went into hiding. An astronomer’s talk rounded out the evening, guiding us through constellations we couldn’t quite see but could vividly imagine, blending science with mythology in a way that brought the cosmos alive.
The host
At the heart of it all was our host, Rizwan Ali. Charismatic, attentive, and endlessly knowledgeable, he kept the group engaged and comfortable. His ability to transform what could have been a disappointment into an evening full of joy speaks volumes.
The experience
Yes, we saw some stars, but not nearly as many as we’d hoped. Who would have known that you can’t order stars around and ask them to appear, but that’s the beauty of this experience – you know never know what to expect. The desert gave us so much more: the rush of sandboarding, the warmth of a fire under the night sky, the delicious taste of barbecue, and the camaraderie of shared adventure. In the end, the stargazing trip turned out to be about more than stars, it was about connection, nature, and the unexpected magic of the desert.
Stargazing or not, Arabian Wanderers delivers an adventure worth taking. For anyone craving something different, this is a night out in the desert you won’t forget.

Trilogy by Buddah Bar An
LA PETITE MAISON AT THE GALLERIA
The Spot
La Petite Maison hides in plain sight on Al Maryah Island, tucked inside The Galleria. To get there you walk past a graffitisplashed corridor, that feels more like a Parisian backstreet than a glossy mall. Once you step into the lift the sound of French music rises and you’re transported to the French Riviera.
The Vibe
Crisp white tablecloths glow against the bright coloured art on the walls. Every fork, every glass, every fold of napkin is precise. French music plays in the background as the barman mixes beverages with the care of someone mixing perfume.
Food and Drinks
LPM’s food is French Mediterranean with a whisper of Italian. It’s what happens when comfort food gets dressed up for a night out. Think simple ingredients, treated with the kind of reverence usually
reserved for royalty. It’s the sort of food you’d expect from the South of France if your grandmother and a French chef teamed up in the kitchen. Everything feels considered yet effortless. The burrata with black truffle is a starter that makes you close your eyes on the first bite. Creamy, earthy and too good to share. The showstopper is the beef tartare with smoked bone marrow mayonnaise, it’s so decadent, it should come with a warning label.
You haven’t been to LPM if you haven’t had the Burgundy snails with garlic butter and parsley. It’s the real hero of the starters, and a rite of passage.
The grilled Wagyu sirloin was rich and indulgent. The Vivienne lamb cutlets were sublime and packed with flavour and finished with just enough finesse to make you fall in love. Perfectly pink, dressed with olive, eggplant caviar and pine nuts, they’ll haunt your dreams for a long time. But not everything landed perfectly. The
lobster linguine, looked the part but fell short on the flavour. The pasta was tasty, the lobster itself wasn’t bad, but it didn’t sing. Blame the snails for stealing the spotlight.
Dessert is where the magic returns. The vanilla cheesecake lives up to its reputation as the best in the UAE. Light, creamy, perfectly paired with a berry compote. The hot chocolate mousse is smooth amd moreish, like something written straight from the heart of the kitchen. Both desserts tasted like they were made for the king of France.
The Service
There’s a quiet choreography to the way the staff move. They glide, rather than walk, anticipating what you need before you realise you need it.
What’s On the Bill
Expect to spend around Dhs500 per person. If you’re adding Wagyu, caviar or multiple courses, the total climbs fast. But the experience, from food to service, makes it worth it.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
La Petite Maison is an experience that’s about more than just exquisite food. It’s a love letter to French flair that delivers on flavour, charm and style. With each bite you’re transported from Abu Dhabi’s desert heat to the breezy coastline of the French Riviera.

TRILOGY BY BUDDAH BAR
The Spot
Fairytales always promise a touch of magic, whether it’s three wishes from a genie or a ride on a flying carpet. The child in me still chasing that magic decided to grant myself three wishes at Trilogy by Buddha-Bar, it’s three establishments under one roof. The plan was simple, starters at Zeera, mains at Bushra and dessert at Siddharta Lounge.
The Vibe
From the moment you walk into Zeera you’re transported from Yas Bay to India. The smell of cardamom and saffron greets you at the door. Walls are dressed with art, music plays softly, and a karak tea station adds to the charm. Bushra is equal parts opulent with hints of ancient elegance. Then there’s the rooftop area at Siddharta Lounge, with views of the marina that make the night feel like it shouldn’t end. It’s grown up and sensual. The DJ’s Afrohouse playlist calls for toe-tapping and a slight shoulder shimmy.
builds in flavour. The chicken is marinated in cheese, cream with chilli and coriander scented with cardamon and mace. Even the drinks are an ode to Indian cuisine with options like Curry Me Softly, Cardamom Spritz and Same Same But Different.
The Food and Drinks
The samosa chaat with mint, sweet yoghurt and pomegranate seeds at Zeera is unrivalled. The malai chicken tikka is unassuming in presentation and easily misjudged but with each bite it
Once you leave Zeera, the experience then takes you to the Middle East and North Africa at Bushra. If the best parts of Lebanon and the best of Morocco had a baby it would be Bushra. Here the chicken livers are sublime. It’s pan fried with Lebanese olive oil, garlic lemon juice and pomegranate molasses. The Moroccan lamb tagine, slow-cooked with apricots and prunes and served with saffron rice, is rich and indulgent. The mixed grill with kofta, tawook, tikka, lamb chops, is fine but not the highlight.
When it comes to beverages, Siddharta Lounge knows what they’re doing and their shisha menu is just as impressive. The beverage menu says “flavourforward drinks. 0% alcohol. 100% character” and they’re not lying.
The Service
At Zeera the waiters tell stories of India that make every dish feel alive. At Bushra you’re treated like royalty, each plate presented with quiet ceremony. By the time you reach Siddharta the rhythm is effortless.
What to Order

WHERE TO GET THE BEST MOCKTAILS IN ABU DHABI
Dry but never dull. Here’s where to drink well without the booze in Abu Dhabi
For cocktail lovers, Abu Dhabi’s bar scene has options for days, but what about those of us who want all the flavour, hold the alcohol? Whether you’re driving, detoxing, or just not into the booze scene, there’s no reason your drink should feel “basic”.
Thankfully, more and more spots across the capital are taking their mocktails seriously; crisp, creative, and just as good as the real thing (if not better). From garden-inspired mixes to spice-laced refreshers, here’s where to go in Abu Dhabi when you want a proper drink minus the alcohol.
La Petite Maison (LPM)
Mika
Tucked into the waterfront at Yas Marina, Mika is a refined Mediterranean restaurant that brings subtle Middle Eastern influence into its kitchen and its drinks menu. With interiors that lean modern but relaxed and a stunning view, it’s the kind of place that works just as well for a long lunch as it does for a laid-back dinner. Mocktails here anything but basic. Mika’s “art in a glass” philosophy means each nonalcoholic drink is carefully crafted from layered ingredients. Expect seasonal options, delicate garnishes, and flavour profiles that match the mood of the food.

This elegant French-Mediterranean spot at The Galleria ticks all the right boxes: refined interiors and water views from a dreamy terrace. And beyond the classic cocktails, LPM has quietly built one of the city’s most impressive mocktail menus. It’s 16 drinks deep, featuring everything from black lemonade to zero-proof espresso martinis. The Limonade Noire is a standout; rosemary-infused honey, verjuice, activated charcoal, and soda water. It’s unexpected in the best way. On the lighter side, Pomme-Basilic mixes green apple cordial, fresh basil, and sparkling water.

The mocktail list is refreshing, with tropical flavours, citrusy mixers, and the kind of ice-cold energy you want when it’s 40°C and rising. Ask the team for their seasonal picks or go classic with a Havana-inspired noalcohol twist.

With a tagline like “serving joy,” it makes sense that the drinks list leads with flavour. The mocktail menu is stacked with 12 originals, all equally photogenic and refreshing. Bird’s Kiss is a grapefruit, elderflower, and butterfly pea tea blend. Skopelos Vibes channels island energy with passionfruit, pineapple, and ginger ale, while Porto goes peach and strawberry for something smooth and low-key.

Museum of Humanity
Forest House Le Courbe
Dubai’s skyline is a gallery of ambition, but few buildings command the kind of attention that Boubker Benjelloun’s creations do. Benjelloun is an architect and real estate developer who has led projects across the Middle East, Europe, the USA, India, and Morocco. One of his most iconic projects is COMO Residences, s skyscraper curves skyward like a seashell carved by the wind with its layered terraces spiralling upward toward the clouds. The tower is scheduled for completion in 2028 and is being built on The Palm. In Morocco, Solara gleams with clean modern edges that catch the sunlight like a blade, yet its warmth holds true to the land beneath it. And then there is the Museum of Humanity under development in City Walk, where stone and metal are woven together to hold memory and meaning in walls that feel timeless.
But long before he was dreaming of redefining skylines, Benjelloun was a champion swimmer in Morocco. Hours in the pool taught him discipline and focus, but they also gave his imagination free rein.
“While moving through the water, I would imagine entire cities, shaping skylines and spaces in my mind with each lap. Those visions were vivid and constant, though it wasn’t until much later that I realised they were the foundation of a future in architecture,” Benjelloun said.
His path to architecture was not straight. Before embracing design, he trained as a dentist, a choice that might seem far from blueprints and cranes. But he remembers it as a masterclass in precision, patience, and the art of working with his hands. But even in the clinic, his mind lingered on spaces and structures.
“My involvement in real estate development in Casablanca drew me deep into the design process and reignited a creative passion I’d carried for years. Each step along the way, no matter how different, added layers to how I approach architecture today, blending technical discipline with an instinct for spaces that inspire,” he said.
This move into real estate development in Casablanca brought him back to his creative instincts and gave him the first thrill of seeing ideas become real. It was this first experience in development that gave him the joy of seeing ideas become real. Clarity came during his first major project in Morocco.
“I stood in a space I had imagined, now fully built. That moment of alignment, seeing an idea move from my mind into the physical world, was when I knew I’d found my purpose,” Benjelloun said.
That moment set the tone for a career defined by bold ideas, meticulous detail, and a vision that stretches from imagination to skyline.
Benjelloun’s vision has since expanded across continents, shaped by the cultures, climates, and traditions of every place he has worked. Today, his imagination has a global reach. From the sculptural terraces of COMO Residences in Dubai to daring developments in Europe, the USA, India, and Singapore, his projects command attention.
Boubker Benjelloun
“IT WASN’T JUST ABOUT PROVIDING SHELTER, IT WAS ABOUT RESTORING SELFRELIANCE AND DIGNITY”
“Each region carries its own rhythm, from cultural habits and climate to material traditions. I try to absorb those layers so the design feels globally relevant yet deeply connected to its local context.”
He believes architecture is never isolated, that a building is part of a living ecosystem, made up on the cultural, environmental, and emotional elements. For Benjelloun his philophy is that you have to listen before you draw.
That philosophy extends beyond architecture. Through his philanthropic project, B.Foundation, Benjelloun has helped rebuild a village in Ethiopia, restoring homes, schools, and irrigation systems.
“It wasn’t just about providing shelter, it was about restoring self-reliance and dignity,” he said.
Even with a career that spans the globe, Benjelloun knows the importance of pause. When he is not flying, planning, or visiting sites, he seeks out moments to clear his mind, exploring the outdoors, discovering new places, and enjoying time with family and friends.
“It’s in those pauses that fresh ideas often come to me,” he said.
For Benjelloun, architecture is more than buildings. It is a way to connect, to inspire, and to leave a mark that is both bold and deeply human. Every project, from towering cityscapes to intimate spaces, carries the vision, discipline, and purpose that began decades ago in a quiet pool in Morocco.
“I aim for a sense of wonder, that first moment of seeing something and feeling uplifted, but also comfort, belonging, and dignity. This is the essence of what I call Architecture for Humanity: creating spaces that not only inspire but also serve a deeper purpose, enriching the lives of those who experience them,” Benjelloun said.

When it comes to Dubai landmarks, few shine brighter than the Burj Al Arab. Stepping inside for the first time feels every bit as glamorous as you’d expect, and tucked within this iconic hotel is the equally dazzling Talise Spa, a serene sanctuary suspended high above the Arabian Gulf. Spread across separate ladies’ and gentlemen’s facilities, Talise Spa offers a sense of exclusivity and privacy. Everything about the spa exudes quiet opulence, from the intricate design details to the plush relaxation areas.
THE SETTING
Talise Spa is as much about the setting as the treatments themselves. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and frame breathtaking views of the water. From the sauna you can watch jetskiers carving through the Gulf, while the relaxation areas offer a front-row seat to one of Dubai’s most spectacular panoramas. Even walking between the facilities feels indulgent, hushed corridors, soft ambient lighting, and the calming scent of essential oils drifting through the air. It’s a setting designed to silence the outside world and
centre you in the moment, with the Arabian Gulf stretching endlessly in view.
THE TREATMENTS
I booked in for a 60-minute full-body massage, and from the very first touch, it was clear I was in expert hands. My therapist, from Indonesia, combined skill and intuition to ease away every knot with precision. She worked with a rhythmic flow that felt both deeply restorative and highly personalised, checking in discreetly on pressure but never breaking the sense of calm. The experience struck the perfect balance between indulgent pampering and genuine therapeutic benefit and a treatment that lingered long after I’d left the table. The Gulf views from the treatment room only amplified the sense of escape, reminding you that this isn’t just any massage, it’s a Burj Al Arab experience.
THE FACILITIES
Beyond the treatment rooms, the spa’s facilities feel like an extension of the Burj’s opulent spirit. Guests can unwind in the indoor infinity pool, soak in the jacuzzi, or heat things up in the sauna, all available to both spa and hotel guests. Small touches
elevate the experience: staff topping up chilled water bottles before you even realise you’re thirsty, or guiding you seamlessly between facilities.
THE SERVICE
Service here is polished but never overbearing. Every member of staff I encountered was warm, thoughtful, and genuinely attentive with the kind of hospitality that makes you feel looked after in the smallest of ways. From the moment I checked in, staff took the time to explain the flow of the spa, guide me through the facilities, and ensure I felt at ease. My therapist showed real expertise, tailoring the treatment to my needs without it ever feeling formulaic, while attendants anticipated small requests, from replenishing amenities to offering herbal tea after my massage before I could even think to ask. It’s this combination of world-class professionalism and instinctive attentiveness that makes Talise Spa stand out.
THE EXPERIENCE
There’s no denying that a visit to Talise Spa feels like a quintessential Dubai indulgence and one that lives up to the jewel-box reputation of the Burj Al Arab. The only note? The treatment rooms themselves could benefit from a gentle refresh to match the grandeur of the views. That said, the moment you sink into the massage table and let the therapist work their magic, any minor details fade into the background.
WHAT”S ON THE BILL
Treatments from around Dhs800 for adults and Dhs700 for kids. A splurge, yes, but an unforgettable way to experience one of Dubai’s most iconic addresses.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
A spa that matches the sparkle of its setting, Talise Spa is the crown jewel of relaxation at the Burj Al Arab.

Go hard, go Lagree
From LA to Dubai: Bodyrock brings the original Lagree home
On a Saturday morning, you could be anywhere, in bed, on the beach, at brunch. But instead, we’re on the Megaformer, locked into a Lagree class at Bodyrock, knees shaking, core firing, holding a lunge that feels like it’s never going to end. And weirdly… we’re into it.
So what is Lagree?
People often throw Lagree into the Pilates mix. In fact, it’s not Pilates. “Lagree is a method, not a name,” says Tara, founder, sole owner, and undeniable star of Bodyrock. It’s a high-intensity, low-impact workout that targets muscular strength and endurance through slow, controlled movements on the Megaformer machine. The workout engages muscles deeply, activating your core and providing a fullbody burn, all without putting strain on your joints.
Why Lagree stands out
•Builds muscular strength and endurance
•Tones and sculpts your body (yes, expect your abs to really feel it)
•Keeps your heart rate elevated between 120 and 140 bpm, significantly higher than Pilates, which averages about 90 bpm, meaning you burn far more calories
•Boosts cardiovascular fitness
•Enhances balance, coordination, and body awareness
•Is safe and adaptable for most fitness levels, making it a healthy alternative to high-impact workouts like CrossFit, which can be tough on the spine and joints
The Bodyrock experience
Bodyrock isn’t just another fitness studio, it’s the official home of Lagree in Dubai, with classes based on the original Lagree method from LA. And at the centre of it all is Tara. She doesn’t just lead the class; she drives the energy in the room. She’s passionate, supportive, and right there with you, calling out names mid-move and cheering you on while holding the plank (even when you’re about to drop). She reminds you: “The shake is good. The shake means it’s working.”
The final word Lagree keeps your heart rate up while activating muscles you didn’t even know you had. It’s a full-body workout that tones, strengthens, and challenges endurance, all while being kind to your joints. And at Bodyrock, there’s more than just Lagree. With a fully equipped gym and additional group classes upstairs, it’s a space that has it all. For anyone looking for a workout that does it all without the risk of high-impact injury, Lagree at Bodyrock is the perfect place to start.

SPARTAN TAKES OVER THE STAGE
Etihad Arena swaps rock concerts for rope climbs in its first-ever indoor race this month
Usually when you head to Etihad Arena, it’s to catch a global pop star belting ballads or a UFC fighter getting introduced with enough pyrotechnics to roast a marshmallow. But on Saturday, September 20, the mood shifts from glitter and glam to grit and glory, as the Middle East’s first-ever indoor Spartan City Race crashes into Abu Dhabi. Forget the sand dunes, blistering sun, and long-distance crawls under barbed wire. Instead, Spartan is bringing the pain (and the gains) indoors, with a turbo-
charged 3km course stacked with signature obstacles, set against the sleek, air-conditioned backdrop of Etihad Arena, Yas Island’s palatial performance space.
Spartan races are known worldwide for their punishing terrain, dramatic locations, and a level of masochism that turns crawling through mud into a badge of honour. But this isn’t a traditional Spartan race. There will be no mountains to climb, but if Spartan’s history tells us anything, that just means the obstacles will come at you faster and harder. Expect classics like the A-Frame Cargo Net, Spear Throw, Rope Climb
WHAT’S NEW AT SPARTAN CITY?
and Z Wall, all reimagined to fit the indoor arena vibe. What’s normally a sprawling course of chaos will now be tighter, tenser, and possibly even more intense, with shorter recovery windows and non-stop action.
The City format is also the most beginner-friendly race Spartan has to offer, perfect for those new to obstacle course racing, returning Spartans looking to sharpen their skills, or corporate teams trading spreadsheets for sweatbands. Younger athletes will also have the chance to compete, with dedicated Spartan Kids races. The distances are tailored for different age groups, including a 1km course for ages four to six years, a 1.5km course for ages seven to nine years, and a 3km course for ages nine to 14 years.
The beauty of this new format is the air conditioning. While there may still be some brief outdoor segments, the majority of the race unfolds within the cool walls of Etihad Arena. So, whether you’re chasing a podium, your personal best, or just your dignity, Spartan City should be a race like no other.
Ross Moyles, Spartan Middle East’s Marketing Manager, gives us a sneak peek at a few new challenges racers can expect inside the arena:
Box Jumps
Jump onto and off the box without using any of the side braces, support poles, or flags. It’s all about lower-body power and explosive control.
Jump Rope
This is a timed rope-skip challenge designed to test your coordination and cardiovascular endurance.
Slam Balls
Pick up a weighted ball, lift it overhead, then slam it to the ground, again and again. It’s a full-body challenge focused on power and stamina.
The Mystery Obstacle
There’ll be a surprise obstacle revealed only on race day. No hints, just be ready for anything.

HELLO, Copenhagen
FDiscovering a Hygge way of life
rom the bustling way of life here in Dubai, I found myself on a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark. Leaving behind my to-do lists and calendar meetings to slow down and enjoy life in the slow lane. Madrid
IN MOTION
How to eat, stroll, and soak up the Spanish capital like a local, one perfect day at a time
Madrid, like any other millions-strong capital cities, is a shapeshifter, easy to adore but hard to pin down. To museum lovers, it’s a bottomless trove of Goyas, Velázquezes, Sorollas, and Picassos; to partiers, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure of world-class techno, house, flamenco, jazz – any scene you love, any night of the week. Food lovers may have the most fun: Dinner might be a handful of olives and Sangria at a glorious hole-in-the-wall tapas bar, a nine-course tasting feast at a Michelin-starred gastro haunt, or anything in-between.
Today Madrid is a patchwork quilt of cultures hailing not just from around the Iberian Peninsula but far, far beyond. Here are the reasons why there’s never been a better time to visit the Spanish capital – plus a smattering of insider tips to knit you straight into the city’s fabric from the moment you touch down.
MORNING: HIT THE STREETS
First things first: walk. Madrid is a walker’s paradise. Start your day early on the Gran Vía, the city’s beating commercial heart, where stunning early 20th-century facades frame a stretch of high street stores, cafés, and classic Madrid hustle. It’s Madrid’s own Oxford Street, but with more sunshine and less rush. You’ll find Uniqlo’s flagship spread over three glorious floors, plenty of Zara stores (this is Spain, after all), and a massive Primark that’s practically a landmark in itself.
But don’t stay on the main drag for long. Slip down a side street and into Malasaña, Madrid’s effortlessly cool, boho-chic neighbourhood. Think Berlin energy with a Latin twist: vintage shops, record stores, street art, and people who somehow look great without trying.
Refuel at HanSo Café (@hansocafe), a gem of a coffee shop with an easygoing, communal vibe. Their flat white is fantastic, and the homemade matcha cake is equally rave-worthy. Coffee nerds will appreciate the ever-changing rotation of beans, from local Spanish roasters to global indie favourites.
From there, it’s a 20-minute walk east to El Retiro Park, Madrid’s leafy heart. This former royal retreat is all fountains, sculptures, tree-lined paths, and dreamy vistas, the perfect place to slow down. Don’t miss the Palacio de Cristal, a gorgeous glass pavilion often used for art installations, or the Estanque Grande, the grand boating lake. Hop in a little rowboat and paddle under the sun for some classic Madrid leisure.
HanSo Café

AFTERNOON: ART & CULTURE FIX
Once you’ve worked up a cultural appetite, it’s time for the Golden Triangle of Art: the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofía museums, all within walking distance of each other and essential to Madrid’s artistic soul.
For classical lovers, the Prado (museodelprado.es) is an embarrassment of riches, Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Rubens and more, all in one stately space. A private tour is a wise splurge here; with so much to see, a guide helps bring context to centuries of art.
Next, wander to the Reina Sofía (museoinasofia.es), Madrid’s modern art juggernaut. The main draw is Picasso’s “Guernica”, a mural-sized anti-war masterpiece that hits you in the chest. Surrealism fans will also love the works of Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, while contemporary art lovers will find rotating exhibits that are as sensual as they are surprising.
EVENING: TAPAS, TECHNIQUE & GLOBAL FLAVOURS
Madrid’s food scene is the stuff of legends. Start your night with a classic tapas crawl, best done with no map and an open mind. Order whatever the locals are eating: rich Spanish omelette (ask for it slightly runny), jamón croquettes, vinegary gildas, and plenty of tinto de verano (the locals’ refreshing red wine spritz).
If you’re craving something different, Madrid still delivers. Kaito (@kaito.handrollbar), the city’s original handroll bar, is a minimalist gem where toro, eel and uni are prepared with care and handed over one perfect bite at a time. If you’re a fan of Dubai’s Kokoro, this spot will feel like home.
For heartier fare, check out China Crown (@chinacrownrestaurante), an upscale Cantonese restaurant where the Peking duck is carved tableside and the xiao long bao are delicate, soup-filled perfection. There’s a fantastic eight-course degustation menu where the team recreates the flavours of Imperial China and features spring rolls, fried rice, a dim sum selection and a glorious plate of gleaming duck for just 70 euros per person.
For an all-in-one culinary playground, head to the iconic Mercado de San Miguel (@mercadosanmiguel). This buzzing glass-and-iron structure near Plaza Mayor is packed with stalls serving everything from Galician oysters to manchego cheese, cured meats, craft vermouth, and Basque pintxos. It’s a feast for all the senses.
Prefer something more experimental? Madrid’s nueva cocina scene finds its wildest expression at Sala de Despiece (@saladedespiece), a compact, butcher-themed hotspot that feels more like a performance space than a restaurant. Industrial décor, think meat hooks, steel trays, and open prep stations, sets the stage for a menu that’s all about playful precision: raw ingredients presented like lab specimens, then torched, plated, or assembled tableside with tweezers. Go early or book ahead as this place fills fast.

The RitzCarlton Ras Al Wadi Desert
THE STAY
The moment you pull into the long, winding driveway of The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, you know you’re in for something extraordinary. Set in the heart of a protected nature reserve, this resort offers a stay unlike anywhere else in the UAE. Whether you’re coming from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or further afield, the contrast between the city’s hustle and the serenity of the desert hits immediately. This isn’t just a weekend getaway, it’s a chance to reset. The level of care begins from the welcome drink at check-in to the personalised itinerary recommendations offered by the concierge. Everything is designed to let you experience the desert in the most luxurious, yet authentic way possible.
THE SETTING
The sprawling desert reserve is home to oryx, gazelles, camels, and even wild foxes. You’ll spot them wandering freely between villas or lounging under ghaf trees. At night, the sky becomes a canvas of stars, unobstructed by city lights. Mornings begin with golden sunrises casting long shadows over the dunes, while evenings bring dramatic colours and total calm. The natural beauty is enhanced by the resort’s unobtrusive architecture, which blends seamlessly into the sand-hued landscape.
THE ROOM
We stayed in an Al Rimal Pool Villa, and
it was nothing short of breathtaking. With high ceilings, and natural dark wood finishes, the interiors reflect the desert’s calm without sacrificing modern comfort. The bathroom had a deep standalone tub, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let in endless natural light. But the real luxury was the private outdoor space: a terrace with a sun lounger, a shaded dining area and a temperature-controlled private pool overlooking the dunes. It felt like our own desert sanctuary. Waking up to wildlife grazing near the pool and ending the day with a dip under the stars made for an unforgettable experience.
THE FOOD & DRINK
Dining at this hotel is full-on experience. Breakfast at Kaheela was a generous, global affair with fresh Arabic mezze, perfectly poached eggs, and more juice options than you can count. Our dinner at Gobi took us on a pan-Asian journey that hit all the right spots. Sushi with caviar, Omani lobster and the yummiest chocolate fondant were just some of the highlights. A private dinner at The Paddock took the experience up a notch. Who doesn’t want to have a private chef and staff prepare mouth watering baked camembert with honey while watching the camels roam around outside. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and every dish felt crafted with care.
