This particular phrase has been said to me so many times over the last few months, mainly because I’ve been fretting over celebrating a big birthday at the end of May. I’m not going to say what it is, but it starts with 3 and ends with 0, and while my lower back would say otherwise, I am surprisingly not 300 years old. I’ve experienced a lot in the last 30 years and I’m using this milestone as a moment of reflection. As it is in normal life, there have been ups and downs, as there will be in the future too, but I can wholeheartedly say that these last few years are where I really found myself. I know, I know, I’m rolling my eyes at myself too, but it’s true. I’ve become more confident, more patient, and more certain on what I want in life. Sometimes it takes what feels like an age to find yourself on the right path, and for the first time in 30 years, I feel like I’m finally on mine. I’ve obviously become philosophical in my old age… What’s On is also celebrating a birthday this month, we’re turning 46 years old. 46 years of showing you the best restaurants, hotels, things to do and everything in between. In honour of this, we asked team What’s On to share 46 wonderful reasons they love calling the UAE home, which you can read from p13.
Elsewhere in this issue, you’ll find staycations, spas and workshops to keep you entertained as it starts to heat up. If this is your first summer in the UAE, you’re about to be surprised by how much there is to do. Just stock up on deodorant.

This month, we catch up with Ahmad Almarri, the founder of artisanal ice creamery Canvas Gelato (@canvas.gelato). For nearly a decade, Ahmad has been on a flavour-filled mission – crafting bold, imaginative scoops using real, high-quality ingredients. His creations range from the delightfully unexpected (goat cheese & figs, black sesame) to the deeply indulgent (beef tallow caramel with candied bacon) and the refreshingly zesty (pickled ginger, anyone?). Here, Ahmad shares his favourite spots in the UAE, from where to find the best burger to where he stocks up on beef for dinner parties.
I’m a fan of the Madinat Jumeirah properties. The beach is beautiful, and there’s something magical about walking through the winding paths and waterways. You’re in the middle of Dubai, but it feels like a resort tucked away in another world. @jumeirah
It all depends on the mood, right? If I’m craving a great burger, like a really good, juicy, messy one, then it has to be LENTO. No question. For something more traditional, I head to Al Qbabh in Al Awir. It’s where I go for an all-out Emirati seafood feast, the kind that makes you want to take a nap after. And twice a month, without fail, I drive to Abu Dhabi for Marmellata. Their pizza is just that good. I genuinely think it’s the best pizza in the region. Totally worth the drive. @lento.ae; @alqbabh; @marmellatalove
For footwear, it’s Tamashee. Their sandals are beautifully made, and they’ve got that perfect blend of tradition and modern design. It’s hard to find that kind of quality anymore. For meat, I always go to Carnistore, especially if I’m hosting dinner. They’ve got great cuts, and the service is super reliable.
@tamashee; @carnistore
A lot of people haven’t heard of the Women’s Museum in Al Ras, Deira, but it’s such a gem. Tucked away in the older part of the city, it tells an important story and gives you a real sense of history and culture. Another spot I love is the Arabian Desert Camel Riding Centre out in Al Marmoom. It’s one of those only-in-Dubai experiences, and they really take care of the animals. womensmuseumuae.com; @adcrc.me
Mirzam Chocolate is a multi-sensory experience. The coffee is great, the chocolate is even better, and the light streaming through the windows while you look out at the mosque? Magic. Then there’s To the Moon and Back, which feels like Dubai’s answer to Central Perk. I don’t know what it is, but I always bump into someone I know there. It’s got that neighbourhood café vibe, which is rare in this city. If I’m in Abu Dhabi, my go-to is Local at Al Zeina. Super chilled, good coffee, great people. @mirzamchocolate; @ttmb.coffee; @_localuae_

46 remarkable reasons to love life in the emirates
It might be our birthday, but the best gift we could ask for is to call the UAE our home. Which is why for this anniversary special, team What’s On have compiled their favourite places across the emirates that make life here pretty remarkable.
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The convenience, everything is at your fingertips in the UAE. Need groceries delivered to your door? They’ll be there in 5 minutes with everything you need. Taxis are aplenty. There’s every cuisine you can think of.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
I get this question so often and I never know what to say as we are truly spoiled with choice. I’m going to go with CÉ LA VI, it’s a Dubai favourite for a reason. The location is stunning, food is amazing and service, always incredible.
@celavidubai
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Out in the middle of the desert, grab some snacks to pick on, hop in a 4x4 and head for the sand. You can’t get more UAE than that.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Cocktails with the girlies on Friday evening at a restaurant with a beautiful view, like ATTIKO, then a chilled pool day on Saturday at La Cantine Beach as I’m too old for these wild party ones now. On Sunday, breakfast at Brunch and Cake is always my favourite choice and then a trip
to Dubai Islands’ dog-friendly beach for some walkies with my husband and our fur baby.
@attikodubai, @lacantinebeach, @brunchandcake, @dubaiislandsbeach
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Browse around Ripe Market. This is one of my favourite activities to do. Aimlessly wandering through each stall, chatting to the business owners and treating myself to a handmade piece of jewellery.
@ripemarket
MY FAVOURITE PLACE
TO RELAX IS…
On a staycation. The Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is possibly my
hotel ever. It’s located in the middle of the desert, surrounded by dunes where there is pure peace and quiet. The hotel is really luxurious too with staff that couldn’t be more welcoming and helpful. @anantaraqasralsarab
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
There is a pre-loved designer store in Town Centre Mall in Jumeirah called The Closet and it has so many amazing designers for decent prices. They sell bags, shoes, jewellery and more, and most of the bits don’t even have one tiny mark on
@theclosetuae and
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
That if you like travelling, the country’s geographical placement is ideal. If you’re not here for globe-trotting, no big deal – the world is served to you on a silver platter in the UAE – sights, sounds, smells, flavours, cultures, people – all of it.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
It’s impossible to have a “best” or “favourite” when you’re in this line of work – there are way too many. But if there’s one restaurant you have to try, it’s La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi.
@lpmabudhabi
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Old Dubai. Al Bastakiya, Al Seef, Al Fahidi, or Shindagha. Take your time wandering around the souk and getting lost by the creek. You’ll get a feel of what things were like before this city went into overdrive with respect to its futuristic ambitions. Wonderful photo ops, too. @alseefdubai
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
By being active. The UAE is a great place to be active (use indoor facilities during peak summer). Not a gym rat? Climb a rock wall. Get in the water. Go for a hike or ride a bike. It’s very stimulating, great for the body and mind, and recharges you like mindless scrolling never can.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Dream, with my eyes wide open – because the UAE lets you do that. It gives you so much food for thought, with change happening right in front of your eyes. And that makes you reflect on the potential of infinite possibilities. I like people and places that talk about making things happen – and the UAE is it.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Driving on the roads of the UAE. You done laughing? Now pick a time when it’s not rush hour, and a route that leads you to the mountains or to the sprawling dunes, rather than to glass skyscrapers. Early mornings and late nights are the best. Move over to the cruise lane, don’t quality-test the speed radars, and let that playlist rip. playlist
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
Living with people from around the world in harmony. We read about it being a country that has a reputation for tolerance and religious coexistence, and the firsthand experience is just wonderful and heart-warming.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Golden Dragon in Oud Metha. It is close to five decades old, meaning it was around when Dubai was taking its baby steps towards becoming the global icon it is now known as. Today, its menu leans towards Cantonese, Thai, and Sichuan dishes. And everything is oh-so-good. Try the dim sum basket, dragon chicken, honey chili fish and Kolkata Chinese bhel. @goldendragonme
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Al Ain! This humble city is in Abu Dhabi is often overlooked, but it’s an ancient oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of my favourite places in the UAE. It is one of the oldest inhabited spots in the world and its history runs deep. Don’t miss Hili Archaeological Park, Jebel Hafeet Tombs and Al Ain Oasis.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
I am a homebody, so I love staying at home. You can catch me doing research for my future trips, building LEGO, doing some online shopping, or reading about art history while Netflix goes on in the background.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Fujairah… away from the city skylines and noise. I love its mountain views on one side, and endless blue ocean on the other. While I am not a beach person, I can sit on a lounge chair and just feel my stress melting away. No expensive spa treatment needed.
@discoverfujairah
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
The filter coffee (and the rest of the menu) from Woodlands in Karama. Nothing hits the spot more than the coffee from this no-frills restaurant. No matter how stuffed you are after your meal, do not leave without sipping the filter coffee. You will most likely order a second, or just take one home with you.
Tel: (0)4 337 0253
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The safety, by far. The city gives me the independence and freedom to be the most authentic version of myself. Here, I can explore every corner on my own, without fear or apprehension, reinvent myself as I please, hop on and off the metro whenever and create opportunities for myself. Being a woman never felt so rewarding.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Go on a late-night drive, preferably on a weekend, get a snack and a cup of a karak, and spend the time yapping away. It’s such a great, low-cost, low-commitment way to socialise, and the healing powers of a great cup of karak after a long week are unmatched. This is a prime Dubai experience – you need to try it at least once.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Kinoya is a firm hit with my household; this the one spot both my husband and I enjoy in equal measure – he’s hard to please, impressed by little, but Kinoya has stayed with us from our days being engaged. It’s hearty, wholesome and comforting – what’s not to like? @kinoya.ae
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Walk the streets of Karama, and the childhood of many comes alive. The area around Burjuman extending into Bur Dubai is a concentrate of street food, rows of amazing, cheap dining, old bookstores and so much welcoming energy. Many of us Dubai folk will relate – we spent our teenage here, getting ice cream in Burjuman and shawarma at the corner shop, celebrating festivals and going on late night drives. Peak nostalgia.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Kite Beach. Winter. Darkness. It’s the best combination. What’s even better is when you put a mat down and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. Kite Beach is one of the few free beaches left in Dubai. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a quiet stretch to claim as your own.
@kitebeachdubai
Every time my mother and I go to our tailor in Meena Bazaar, which is too often, we eat at this little neighbourhood Pakistani restaurant – Shehar Karachi –serving up spicy, lip-smacking kadhais and greasy pulaos with fresh, steaming naan. Everything is packed with flavour, easy and cheap – it’s technically comfort food but the food court version. The space is basically bare bones, rudimentary and a little rough at the edges, but filled with charm, from the hospitality of the servers to the warmth of the owner sat by the door. Now, this is an honest operation. Tel: (0)54 553 9820
Sleep in, doll-up, hit the town. After working hard all week, the weekend is when I catch up on sleep, and I’m such a night owl, the nighttime is when I like to venture out. Relax during the day, catch some friends at a dinner in Jumeirah, City Walk or Downtown and then spend the rest of the night at a shisha café.
Reporter
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
For me, the UAE feels like the land of firsts. The possibilities here are unlike anywhere else I’ve lived. With the right mindset, energy, and effort, anything is achievable. If you’re clear about what you want, this place has a way of turning your goals into reality. It’s a country that rewards vision and action.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
@kirarestaurant
Right now, it’s Kira. I’ve only been once since it opened, but I’ve been obsessed ever since. There’s just something about it – the gold accents give it that glam feel, but it’s also calm and quietly elegant. The dishes I tried were absolutely delicious. Kira gets it right on both fronts: beautiful setting and seriously good food. It’s gold –literally and figuratively – and easily one of the most stunning venues I’ve visited. And with food this good, it’s far more than just a pretty face.
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
The Dubai Gold Souk. My mum and I always go whenever she visits – it’s our little ritual, and we both love gold. It’s as authentic as it gets: the buzzing bazaar vibe, the sparkle everywhere, and that old-school charm that transports you back in time.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Doing what Dubai does best: beach and pool days, followed by dining out (always). My ideal weekend starts with a good morning workout, then some time by the water, and later getting dressed up for dinner and drinks with my favourite people. And if I can fit in a spa day? Even better. Self-care here is on another level — nothing beats a little me-time to reset.
Watching the sunset – pretty much anywhere. The way the sky transforms into a canvas of soft hues always gives me a moment to pause, reset, and take in that quiet beauty that feels like it’s welcoming the energy of tomorrow. It never fails to leave me feeling inspired.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Definitely the spa. I recently visited the Banyan Tree Spa and I’m obsessed. But honestly, any spa that gets it right – from the treatments and the service to the peace, the views, and that sense of quiet luxury – is my happy place. It’s where I fully switch off and recharge.
@banyantreedubai
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
Honestly, it’s how outrageously easy life is. Need petrol?
Cafu rolls up. Laundry piling up? Washmen to the rescue. Unexpected midweek drinks turned into a wild night?
Zofeur has your back. Add tax-free living and year-round sunshine – and you’ve got pure, golden, app-powered bliss. @mycafu, @washmen.app, @zofeur
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Kokoro in Alserkal Avenue is my current lunchtime obsession in Dubai. It’s fast, fresh, and hits the spot every single time. I perch at the counter, devour spicy tuna handrolls like they’re going out of style, and watch sushi wizards roll, slice, and plate like edible theatre. @kokoro.dxb
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Al Ijaza Cafeteria in Jumeirah 1. No frills, no fuss – just decades of loyal locals, chaotic curbside orders, and honest food. Pull up, give a quick beep, and out comes a Hassan Mattar sandwich: chicken, fries, mayo, cheese, hot sauce – all perfectly wrong yet absolutely right. Wash it down with a neon-bright fruit juice. Open since 1990, it’s a cultural fixture for many, a real gem that never changes. @aliljazacafe
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Start strong with a workout. My go-to is 1Rebel in ICD Brookfield Place, followed by coffee chats with the girls. Then it’s off to a long, lazy lunch somewhere fun like Chez Wam or Bungalo34 – sunshine, good food, and even better company. Bed by 9, of course. It’s giving nearly-40 energy, Dubai-style: social but balanced. @1rebel_uae, @chezwamdubai, @bungalo34
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Scouting out new restaurants. The UAE’s food scene is a constantly evolving playground, with every flavour and concept imaginable. From small, long-standing Pakistani spots that have survived decades, to experimental eateries,
food halls, and celebrity-driven kitchens, there’s always something unexpected around the corner. It’s a mix of global influences and local flair, all packed into one country, and I’m always excited to see what the next bite might bring.
FAVOURITE
There’s this quiet gem in Al Quoz called Longevity Hub – a sort of no-nonsense wellness spot focused on cold plunges and saunas. I won’t pretend I love the ice bath – it’s 15 minutes (humble brag) of existential crisis – but the high afterwards is unmatched. Muscles unlock, my brain exhales, and I walk out feeling strangely invincible. What I love most is the vibe –clean, calm, and refreshingly unfussy. No zen waterfalls or whispering staff, just a nice place that lets you reset in peace. @longevity.wellness.hub
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
With its chic Californian Palm Springs vibes, Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha in Abu Dhabi offers everything from terracotta-framed padel courts surrounded by greenery to a stunning infinity pool with views of the Arabian Gulf. Between the wellness-focused amenities and serene spaces, it’s the ultimate place to unwind, feel fancy and miles away from anyone else. @matchaalbateen
Contributor
THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The way every weekend feels like a holiday. From early morning beach walks to afternoon brunches and leisurely pool days – I’ve been living here for a decade and I still sometimes can’t believe how blissful it feels to be here.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Sucre. This is a seriously underrated DIFC gem. Start with drinks at sister bar Alma, where crimson shades and master mixology create a sultry environment for early evenings. Then head next door to Sucre, where foodie highlights include padron peppers, perfectly cooked steaks, and the best dessert in the city – the dulce de leche fondant.
@sucredubai
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
The waterfront market. Go for sunrise and see the local fishermen bringing in their
fresh catches, and shop over 500 vendors selling everything from seafood to fruit and vegetables, dry goods, and meat and poultry. Stick around for lunch and have the one of the on-site restaurants cook what you buy.
@wfm.uae
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
With after-work drinks on a Friday. For the nostalgic British pub vibe (and convenience to my apartment in The Greens), garden on 8 is my go-to. From there, Saturday and Sunday typically revolve around quintessential UAE experiences – pool days, brunches, seeing friends. Tagomago is one of my favourite weekend spots, but since the opening of J1
Beach, I love to glam up and go to Sirene or Gitano.
@gardenon8, @tagamagodubai, @j1beachdubai, @sirene_dxb, @gitano.dubai
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Explore! Be it a new restaurant or beach club that’s opened in the beating heart of Dubai, a hiking route in Khorfakkan worth a 5am start for, or a pretty café on the beach in Abu Dhabi. Another wonderful thing about UAE living – there’s always so much new stuff to do.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
With some full-scale pampering. For a pinky-nude manicure my favourite place to go is We Nails, while Ellis at JVC’s Bali-inspired SOTA salon is my go-to for all things haircare. I’ve also recently found sound healing really helps me switch off, the Beyond Wellness sessions are utterly brilliant.
@wenailsdubai, @sotasalon, @beyondwellnessdxb
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
Emirates Bio Farm is a great place to go to escape the city. They’ve been growing fresh fruit and veggies since 2016, but it’s evolved into so much more than that – with farm visits, tractor tours, animal feeding and barrel rides through the fields that add to the wholesome feel.
@emiratesbiofarm
Explore the diverse, exquisite flavors of North Indian cuisine at Rohini by Little Miss India. From aromatic curries to tantalizing tandoor, every dish is a discovery. Let us guide you to an unforgettable dining experience.
Stretch out your summer days with these outdoor sunrise and sunset experiences across the city
If you don’t mind sacrificing a few hours of shut-eye, you can still enjoy alfresco breakfasts in the summer. Start the day with a relaxing beach walk –Kite Beach is a popular spot for watching the golden orb lift from below the Arabian Gulf and into the sky to welcome the day, then reward yourself with breakfast at perennially popular Common Grounds. Their Kite Beach location opens at 6am, so before the temperatures rise to unacceptable levels, you can tuck into colourful acai bowls, sliced avo and hummus toast, or the five-grain banana porridge. Common Grounds, Kite Beach, 59 Al Hadd Street, Jumeirah 3, 6am to 10pm. @_common.grounds_
Set 77 floors above ground, this rooftop restaurant is one of Dubai’s best vantage points for drinks with a view. The contemporary venue is adjacent to the infinity pool, and tables are arranged around a central bar, well positioned to enjoy the stretching views of JBR and The Palm. And, being at such a height (and sea facing), means you can still enjoy alfresco drinks in early summer. On Mondays, a three-hour package from 6pm to 9pm is a brilliant way to start the week on a high, with a snack platter and unlimited drinks included. It’s adults only.
ZETA Seventy Seven, Address Beach Resort, JBR, 6pm to 9pm, Mondays, Dhs377 ladies, Dhs477 gents. Tel: (0)4 879 8866. addresshotels.com
There’s no need to sacrifice your alfresco self-care when the temperatures rise. Simply take your session 50 storeys above ground with wellness sessions at Aura Skypool. This jaw-dropping, 360-degree pool provides a panoramic backdrop for a morning yoga session throughout the summer. Start the day with a 6.30am class on Monday, Thursday and Saturday of awakening vinyasa, combining breathwork, mindful movement and empowering poses for an energy and mindset rest. It’s followed by a nourishing healthy breakfast in the lounge.
Aura Skypool, Palm Tower, 6.30am, Mon, Thurs and Sat, Dhs280. @auraskypool
Bringing a slice of Riviera rive to the shores of the Park Hyatt is Twiggy. Through the cooler months, it’s the place to see and be seen for pool days, DJ sets and high-octane dining. But this summer, it’s also a vibrant spot for a night swim, with Tropezienne Nights taking place every Friday and Saturday from 7pm, perfect for catching the sun dip behind the infinity pool. The glamourous night swim means moonlit swims in the lagoon pool, a Riviera-inspired menu, and live DJs spinning tunes under the stars. Twiggy, Park Hyatt Dubai, 7pm, Fri and Sat, Dhs250 with Dhs150 redeemable. @twiggydubai
See the city from above with a hot air balloon
As a Dubai visitor, there’s lots of landmarks to tick off: Downtown, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina… But for a unique vantage point, few activities compare to a hot air balloon tour above the desert, which continue at sunrise until mid-June. You’ll be picked up in the early hours and driven to the desert to drift into the air just as day breaks. Drink in the stunning views of the golden dunes with the delicate early morning light as you float above the sands. Once airborne, you’ll enjoy an in-flight falcon show, and then return back to the city.
Hot Air Balloon UAE, 4am, daily until June 15, Dhs1,100. hotairballoonuae.com
Retreat to the desert for dinner at Sonara Camp
Elevating the desert dinner experience, Sonara Camps are now located in both Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah, but the orginal in Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve offers an elevated experience with all the quintessential highlights of a trip to the desert, coupled with five-star food and service. Korean cuisine takes centre stage with a star chef at the helm
In Dubai’s burgeoning restaurant scene, a handful of restaurants make an instant impact. Sushisamba was one such restaurant, which brought a trifecta of excellent views, dishes and vibes to the Palm Tower in 2021.
The man who can be credited with much of the success on the culinary front is chef Kyung Soo Moon, the restaurant’s then-executive chef. But now he’s turned his attention back to his roots for Hanu, a modern interpretation of Korean
cuisine. Found at St Regis Gardens, it’s in good company with restaurants like Leña, Aretha, Chez Wam and Tresind Studio among its neighbours.
Once inside, we’re met with dark and moody interiors with intricate attention to detail. Rich dark walnut woods, striking artworks and Korean pine trees lace the traditional with more contemporary accents, befitting of a glamourous new Dubai restaurant. You enter through the lounge and bar where a DJ spins enigmatic beats that are ambient but not overpowering, through to a table in the restaurant. If you’re unfamiliar with Korean BBQ, the knowledgeable team are on-hand to make recommendations, and confidently talk us through the concept and must-try dishes. The wagyu
beef gyoza (Dhs68) is one such dish, piping hot parcels of Japanese A5 wagyu short rib and shiitake mushroom encased in a dough that’s the perfect level of crispy and tender. Forget everything you know about vegetables and order the Korean fried cauliflower (Dhs65), coated in a spicy sauce and served with a side of yuja radish to balance the heat. The almosttoo-pretty-to-eat beef tartelette (Dhs110) is another playful interpretation of classic Korean flavours, with a soft quail egg marinated in soy sauce, served on top of a tartelette of beef jongjorim, a layer of caviar giving it a Dubai elevation.
To truly get a taste of Korean BBQ, order the ‘Meat Me At The Grill’ (Dhs365 per person), where you’ll be served four cuts of premium meat with a selection of sides, condiments and a stew. It’s a generous offering – much like it would be if you dined at Chef Moon’s family home – given added wow-factor with the meats cooked on the charcoal grill built into each table. Each buttery cut of meat is full of flavour and perfectly cooked, from the Australian Black Angus to the Japanese A4 Wagyu striploin.
For dessert, a beautifully presented golden pear delight (Dhs63) is a light and fresh way to end the meal. Diced Korean pear is paired with a walnut crumble and a scoop of tonka bean ice cream.

A focus on quality cuisine and service makes this a restaurant deserving of a place on your foodie bucket list.
From serial gastropreneur Joey Ghazal, The MAINE is one of Dubai’s biggest homegrown restaurant success stories. And adding to the existing trio of restaurants in Dubai later this year will be The MAINE Palm, set to open alongside Canary Beach – a seaside iteration of Canary Club – at Club Vista Mare. There will be multiple lounge bars, a terrace, beach beds and cabanas, ideal for sunsoaked days and romantic date nights. On the menu, fan favourites from both venues will offer something for everyone when they open in October. @themainesea, @canaryclubdxb

Gran Meliá Dubai Jumeirah is set to bring a new dynamic to luxury stays in Jumeirah 1 when it opens in early 2027. The resort has unveiled an impressive culinary line-up ahead of its debut, which promises to bring big names and even bigger flavours to the city. Zuma Beach House will see guests enjoy sun-soaked days on a private stretch of sand, recline on push liners that flank a sleek swimming pool, and of course graze on iconic izakayastyle dishes. In search of spots to keep cool this summer? This one is all about the wow-factor
No matter how many times I drive up to the Burj Al Arab, I’m always in awe. The way the sail-shaped façade of this iconic ‘7 star’ hotel looms into view as you cruise over the bridge, the sparkling Arabian Gulf on either side adding further allure to the serene setting. It’s a suitably glamourous entrance that sets the tone for an array of Michelin-pedigree restaurants, opulent suites and a lavish spa. But we’re not here for any of those today. Instead, we bundle into a buggy waiting to welcome us at the entrance for SAL, the chic Mediterranean concept that unrolls against the terrace at the back of the hotel.
Despite the climbing temperatures, a welcome breeze dances off the ocean and across the terrace, and as we walk down towards the pools it feels like we’re leaving the humid city behind for a serene seaside oasis. With the Burj Al Arab behind you, you face towards endless blues. A bridge over the family-friendly freshwater pool leads to the mirrored restaurant on the right, and neat rows of loungers on the left, then opens up to the adults-only infinity pool, which stretches the entire length of the terrace, seemingly dropping into the Arabian sea beyond. We settle into loungers, already laid out with smart navy towels and white pillows in cotton cases that are plump and luxurious. A fresh coconut (Dhs60) is a refreshing way
to keep cool as we take in the views. But we’re regularly approached with amenities like cold towels and detox shots to keep us hydrated.
While many of its beach club rivals favour loud DJ sets and exuberant entertainment, SAL favours a quiet luxury approach, and that’s all part of its appeal. Chilled house beats enhance the ambience, but at a welcome background level that allows guests to relax and socialise.
There’s an extensive Mediterranean served poolside, but for lunch we choose to dine at the restaurant. It still benefits from those same endless blue views, but with the added bonus of AC while we dine. The standout starter is the delicately plated wild crab (Dhs105), a flavour sensation of pickles, paprika and mayonnaise. The lobster linguine (Dhs250) is a stellar choice for main – a generous portion that gets the ratio of freshly made pasta and meaty lobster just right. We also try the tender and delicious grilled lamb chops (Dhs190), simply seasoned with harissa. For dessert, the pistachio (Dhs70) gelato is rich and creamy, a welcome crunchy from the caramelised pistachio pieces adding great texture to an indulgent dessert.
SAL, Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, pool 10am to 7pm, restaurant 12.30pm to 10.15pm daily, pool passes Dhs500 with Dhs250 redeemable Monday to Thursday, Dhs800 with Dhs400 redeemable Friday to Sunday. Tel: (800) 323232.

Can this sleek steakhouse stand out in Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab’s extensive culinary line-up?
Does Dubai have a really great highend steakhouse? It’s something I think to myself as I pull up at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. The hotel – and its near dozen restaurants – are only six weeks into operation when we find ourselves heading to The Cullinan. But word has spread fast, and even though we’re here for an early reservation, the dining room fills up quickly. Sure, in part, it can be credited to this being one of the newest tables in town. But I also suspect others also welcome the arrival of a glamourous steakhouse to Dubai’s well-populated dining scene.
The interiors are deliciously Art Deco. Think smooth white and grey marble, a monochrome tiled terrace, mirrored ceilings, and plenty of gold accents. If
pages of steaks might be overwhelming, but our friendly server is on hand to make expert recommendations and answers all our questions with a knowledge and passion that impresses.
there was any doubt beforehand that this restaurant was a steakhouse, it melts away upon arrival, where grand meat display refrigerators, stocked with premium cuts, welcome guests. The dining room is expansive, but cleverly designed so it’s still got soul. An open kitchen runs down one side, chefs bustling away at stations, while the other side opens out onto a long alfresco terrace that perfectly frames the Burj Al Arab for instant wow-factor.
The Cullinan has a big focus on meat, but there’s also seafood options across the starters, a page of salads, and a selection of mains that aren’t steak for those not here to sample the premium cuts. The two
To start, we’re told we have to try the steak tartare mille-feuille (Dhs118), and we’re very glad we do. It arrives as a beautifully plated ring of diced beef tenderloin topped with truffle caviar, cucumber pearls and gold leaf (this is Dubai, after all), with a creamy demiglace poured into the middle. The flavours are powerful but balanced, and it’s exceptionally good. The wood-fired prawns (Dhs95) are meaty but a little dry, despite the plate being dotted with a basil cream and yellow capsicum gel. Our steaks arrive, and the 300-day grain-fed Black Market ribeye I order (Dhs380) is near perfection. Each bite melts in the mouth, it’s cooked just as I like it, and when dipped in a side of chimichurri (Dhs30), it creates the perfect pairing. You’ll need to order sides too, and the garlic butter spinach (Dhs45) is one we’d order over and over again.
For dessert, we like the look of almost all of them, but the white chocolate soufflé (Dhs85) is the ideally indulgent end to a meal that hits almost all the high notes. With a great soundtrack, sophisticated ambience, and a buzzy vibe that makes you want to keep the evening going at the bar after dinner, The Cullinan makes a solid case for one of Dubai’s best new restaurants.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT
This is a sleek date night spot worth splashing out on.
It’s known and loved for its Tomatini cocktails, warm prawns, and effortlessly chic French vibes, and DIFC stalwart La Petite Maison has just added a new reason to make reservations – a new cocktail menu. A tribute to the golden age of the French Riviera, Déjà Vu features 10 new drinks inspired by the nostalgia of the South of France. Try the Birkin, a twist on the Americano; or Soleil, a sunny reimagining of the classic G&T.

OF THE MONTH:
So, here’s the scoop: GABA has quietly landed in Dubai Marina, and it already feels like that place you want to gatekeep (but won’t, because your friends deserve this too). By day, it’s a tea lounge serving rare brews in a setting that feels calm and curated. There’s a real ritual to it – organic teas, calming vibes, and just enough ceremony to make it feel special.
But stay a little longer (or better yet, come back after dark), and the doors open to an entirely different world. Hidden behind the tea façade is a speakeasy that’s glam yet intimate in all the right ways –vintage touches, velvet chairs, and warm, low lighting. DJs set the mood without overpowering the room, cocktails get creative, and the whole space feels both elevated and chilled. It’s the kind of spot where you can dress up or down and still feel right at home.
GABA’s design nails the balance between cosy and glam. The tea room is calm and simple, while the speakeasy gets a little darker, with hints of old-school glamour. Think plush seating, gold touches, cool art on the walls, and flattering lighting. It has that lived-in vibe, like stepping into someone’s stylish retro living room, but with enough polish to feel like a night out.
This is not your usual Marina bar hop. GABA’s vibe is chilled but with a pulse. DJs are on rotation, playing sets that stay cool rather than clubby – think groovy rather than full throttle. Here you can actually catch up with friends, share bites, and slowly shift from tea to tequila. It’s intimate, stylish, and perfect for those seeking a night out without shouting over the music.
We started with the charred edamame (Dhs35), the ebi tempura (Dhs45), cucumber bites (Dhs35), chicken karaage (Dhs45), Kaiso salad (Dhs75), and the salmon tartare (Dhs65). From the Robata
menu, we tried the corn and miso (Dhs40), ume shiso (Dhs45), and the Gaba slider (pretzel bun, wagyu beef, and robata onion jam), (Dhs110) – probably the best slider I’ve ever had. For mains, the grilled sea bass (Dhs110) was meltin-your-mouth light yet rich in flavour, and the mushroom soba (Dhs75) hit all the right notes. To end on a sweet note, we had a selection of mochis (Dhs15 each), light and just the perfect touch of sweetness.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
There’s something quietly special about GABA. It’s that kind of place where you can ease into the night without the full club chaos, with creative drinks and food that’s absolutely delicious. It’s more house party vibes, but make it chic, which makes it a must-visit for those who want to leave the house while keeping it lowkey.
While we mostly stuck to the impressive wine list, Gaba’s drinks menu is packed with fun and creative cocktails, offering plenty of playful and inventive options for those looking to sip on something special.

The global craze has landed in the UAE. So why are we going loco for Labubus?
We’re not exactly sure how we got here. Social media is rife with every category of content starring these dolls, and the comically long lines outside toy stores featuring fullgrown women (without children in tow) are quite telling of just how strong this wave is.
Popularised by our fellow Gen Z folks, the Labubu is not your typical doll. It looks like a mildly disturbing crossover between a bunny and some kind of sharp-toothed monster, and essentially, they’re collectible keychains. They come in a range of colours, and have individual identities, with different names and facial expressions.
The doll is the creation of Hong Kongborn, Netherlands-raised illustrator Kasing Lung, who created the Labubu as part of a cast of characters in The Monsters, a Nordic fairytale series. The Labubu is just one of the many monsters inhabiting this world and is a cheeky, naughty personality (hence the uniform devilish grins). The entire
family of Labubus are female, and while they play pranks and create chaos, they’re meant to be harmless and kind-hearted.
One may not be able to understand why the doll has blown up into such a big trend. Sure, you don’t know which one you’re getting until you open up the package and there’s a whole universe to get through, but still, some netizens think it’s ugly or creepy, and that, my friends, is exactly why.
The fact that Labubus look different, unique, a little strange and out-of-the-box is why everyone is out for one. The appeal lies in the fact that this is not cute – it’s any other variation of cool, edgy, weird, so-on-and-so-forth – the social currency of 21st Century popularity. They’ve come to be a sort of high-fashion, luxury accessory, seen on purses, work totes and backpacks, a weird juxtaposition dangling from Birkins, Kellys and Lady Diors, and on the arms of popstars and celebrities.
We’ve seen the manic, frenzy-fuelled eras of the Cabbage Patch Kids and the
Tamagotchis. This time around, the adults are the ones buying into the fad – a sign of the times, if you will.
There is also an air of acquired exclusivity – these little things always seem to be sold out; all part of a marketing strategy where limited quantities are supplied into the market at a time – you starve the people, they want more and they want it now. Thanks to this, Labubus are now enjoying collectables status, being resold on collectables websites and by third parties for multiple times the price.
It all adds up, creating a sort of club, and if there’s one thing the digital world has cursed us with, that is major FOMO; wanting to be on the inside, with the ones in the know, and that exactly is the anatomy of a trend. I mean, if we’re under-the-table, third-partying these things, you know it’s a real trend.
In the UAE, websites are retailing these for up to Dhs350, which is indeed a massive markup from the original price, but the demand is insanely high, and the people are making their money. Labubus are available in The Little Things stores across Dubai for the base price of Dhs79.

The iconic musical is heading to Abu Dhabi this June
hether you grew up belting out Dancing Queen or discovered ABBA’s top tunes through TikTok, there’s no denying it: their music is absolute magic. And for you fans here in the UAE, it’s time to sing, dance and celebrate as the iconic musical, Mamma Mia! is coming to Abu Dhabi. It is set to dazzle audiences from June 11 to 22 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island.
The musical is a celebration of ABBA’s timeless melodies – loved by everyone from Gen Z to our lovely grandparents, who all know their inescapably infectious pop anthems.
In fact, Mamma Mia The Musical was named after one of its chart-topping singles – Mamma Mia, which continues to stir our souls even though it has been five decades since it hit the radio waves back in 1975.
Mamma Mia the Musical was an idea conceived by Judy Craymer, a British producer who was working with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (two members of ABBA) on the musical Chess. She believed that the 1980s song The Winner Takes It All had excellent potential for a wonderful story. After a decade of trying to convince Andersson and Ulvaeus, a writer was bought in to write the script and the curtains raised on its very first show in 1999.
From there it has travelled across the world to over 50
countries with over 1,500 performances to its name. And it is performed in various languages as well from German to Swedish, Italian, Spanish and even Japanese, allowing the show to connect with audiences globally. Around 65 million people have seen the show, which means ‘My, my, how can you resist it?’
Many of you may have seen the movie under the same name, which is based on the musical. It hit the screens back in 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and other star actors. The movie was another major box office hit and introduced ABBA’s music to a whole new generation. It was so popular, a sequel came out in 2018.
Want to know more about the story? Sit back and read on, because you are in for one interesting tale of family, friendship, and love.
Mamma Mia is set on the (fictional) picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi and revolves around a young woman named Sophie who is preparing for her wedding. However, there is one very important person missing – her father. In a bid to have him at her wedding, Sophie invites three men from her mother Donna’s past, hoping one of them is her biological father. But she has to do it all without her mother knowing.
However, it doesn’t go according to plan and each character must navigate on their own while dealing with their feelings. Ultimately, the musical celebrates love, family, friendship, and the joys of self-discovery.
And of course, it’s all intertwined with the unforgettable music of ABBA backed
with some wonderful dance moves, glittering costumes and simple yet gorgeous set designs. Tickets start from Dhs125 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, and from Dhs200 from Friday to Sunday. Do note, children under six and babies will not be admitted into Etihad Arena.
If you want to make the most of your experience, arrive on time as the drama starts the second the lights in the theatre go out. Doors open an hour before the show giving you enough time to pick up some drinks or a bite to eat.

A slice of serenity at one of the hottest new hotels in the city…
Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab has been one of Dubai’s most anticpated hotels, so when it opened everyone was chomping at the bit to see what the hype was all about. The architecture impressed. As did the 11 dining concepts available. But what about the wellness side? A hugely important piece of any luxury hotel’s offering. For spa fanatics like myself, this was what I was waiting for.
The spa is located opposite the lobby and up a few floors in the elevator. Upon arriving, I discovered there are actually several floors to the spa experience, ladies areas are separate to men’s, and there’s even an indoor spa pool, which has an incredible view of the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab. I happened to be there for a sunset
appointment, and it was breathtaking to watch the red and orange colours bounce over the ocean in front and the water of the pool too.
The treatment rooms are each accompanied by a private terrace that gazes outwards, making full use of one of the most sought-after views in Dubai. After firstly washing my feet, the therapist offered me some cards, after choosing one I realised that it was an affirmation for the day, a nice touch that I hadn’t seen before. The treatment itself was beautiful too, as expected.
In the relaxation room post-treatment, the views are as spectacular as the rest of the spa. Each bed was divided by drapes, and a table where tea, nuts, and dried fruit was placed. There was also a book on each for those who fancied, each centering about health and wellness. On my table was one detailing menopause, and although I am hitting the big 30 at the end of this month, I’m not quite at that age to worry about that yet, so I decided to admire the view instead.

Thinking about aesthetics for a fresh-faced summer glow? Here’s where to start…
I’m not afraid to admit I’ve dabbled with aesthetic treatments. From adolescence, I struggled with acne-prone skin. In my twenties, I contended with sensitive and dehydrated skin, not helped by a nonchalant approach to sunscreen, despite living in Dubai. And as I’ve moved into my thirties, I’ve regularly stood in the mirror looking into how weight gain and frown lines have impacted my once fresh face.
So while I have a clear goal in mind, I arrive open-minded to Seline Clinic. A relative newcomer to Dubai’s scene of world-class clinics designed to help you put your best face forward, it’s a beautiful and grand space. The reception is chic, spacious and neutral, and once I’ve completed all the formalities, I’m invited to order a drink from their array of coffees, smoothies and teas neatly presented on a menu, a lovely, welcoming touch.
I’m led to the second floor for my appointment with Dr Patricia, who instantly puts me at ease with her friendly manner. She talks me through some of her favourite treatments, takes time to understand what I’m looking to achieve, and is honest – and realistic – about the results. She’s not keen on treatments that make a drastic difference, instead focusing on subtle medicines and devices that offer natural and long-lasting results. After a skin consultation, we deep-dive into the good and the bad. She shares advice on the best ways to rehydrate my skin, and products that would complement my routine, before recommending a series of Botox that will help lift and brighten my face. I’m offered numbing cream (yes please) and another drink, and relax in the serene treatment room, until I’m ready for my injections. In total, it takes no more than 10 minutes, and aside from a little discomfort, it’s relatively painless. Best of all, it’s downtime-free, making it the ideal lunchtime quick fix. The results begin to show a few days later, and after a fortnight (and a brief top-up at 14 days), I’m impressed with the visible results that turn back a few years. Rates: Botox is priced from Dhs700 depending on the area.
Seline Clinic Dubai, 623 Jumeira St, Umm Suqeim 1, 9am to 9pm Mon to Fri, 10am to 9pm Sat and Sun. Tel: (800) 735463. @seline.dubai

What are three things to consider before getting aesthetic treatments?
Be clear about your goals, whether it’s lifting, glow, firmness, contouring, skin texture, or pigmentation. Be sure to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner. Understand the treatment plan, downtime, and longterm care involved.
What are the best treatments for subtle, natural results?
In my practice, I focus on combining regenerative medicine and energy-based devices to achieve natural, long-lasting results:
• I use Sculptra (poly-Llactic acid) to stimulate deep collagen, gradually improving firmness and elasticity
• Ultherapy and Ultraformer MPT are my go-to “Oncea-Year Treatments” for lifting and tightening with no downtime
• My signature GLOW SKIN Protocol combines Ultraformer, polynucleotides, amino acids, and Exopeel (Lhalapeel + exosomes) to boost radiance and firmness in one session.
What should you ask your practitioner before a treatment?
Firstly, is this treatment suitable for my concern and skin type? Second, what kind of results can I expect, and how long will they last? And finally, make sure you’re aware of the recovery time and aftercare.

If it’s peace you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. But don’t let the serenity fool you. Beyond its calm coves and quiet luxury lies a pulse of pure adventure. Glide across glassy waters aboard a traditional dhow, dive into vibrant coral reefs, embrace farm life or take flight above its towering cliffs. This is a choose-your-ownadventure resort with really good room service…
Tucked away in the fertile valleys near Dibba lies a hands-on escape into Oman’s agrarian roots. At this Dibba Farm experience, you’ll trade your sandals for farmer’s boots as you learn the ageold rhythms of rural life. Start your day exploring the lush greenhouses, tasting crisp cucumbers and sun-ripened tomatoes straight off the vine. Sample sweet, sticky local dates plucked fresh from towering palms, then sip rich Omani coffee, brewed low and slow over an open flame. Roll up your sleeves for a cheese-making class, or try your hand at harvesting vegetables and feeding the animals. As midday arrives, gather on a breezy veranda for a farm-to-table lunch, featuring garden-fresh fare and slow-cooked meats. It’s a sensory immersion into a slower, more intentional way of life.
OMR 80 per person.
If Zighy Bay impresses from sea level, wait until you see it from the sky. Climb aboard a microlight aircraft and ascend to 1,640 feet above sea level, where mountains fall away and the coast reveals itself in stunning clarity. You’ll be seated just behind the pilot, the open cockpit offering a visceral connection to the wind and the wild. Glide over the honey-hued sands of Miam Beach, the rugged edges of the Hajar Mountains, and the hidden beauty of Dibba town. Whether you choose a three five-, or seven-hour day voyage, or opt to sleep under the stars on an overnight cruise, this is slow travel at its finest. Your route glides past the unspoiled bays of Haffa, Sanna’t, Lima, Charia, and Hamra – each offering a new view, a hidden cove, or an invitation to dive into warm, crystal-clear waters. They’re equal parts rugged and refined – just like the landscape. Whether beachside or mountainbacked, every space feels like an escape from the algorithm. No noise, no schedule, no shoes required. Just the kind of luxury that whispers, not shouts.
Accommodation varies during the year. June prices start from Dhs8,150 per villa per night. sixsenses.com
Food is the gravity of life - we live to eat, not eat to live. And if you do otherwise, then maybe it’s time to reconsider, for there is so much incredible food in this world and nearly not enough time to try it all. Food is perhaps the most integral, telling part of a country’s social
fabric – it answers so many questions about a culture, the local way of life and why things are the way they are.
If you’re not sure where to start, get inspired with a foodie-focused holiday to these hotspots, where the local flavour is the way to discover.
The hawker-dining scene of Bangkok is the highlight of this cuisine, a street-food culture so strong, you’ll find the best food for mere dollars inside tin shacks, under plastic roofs and in the glow of fluorescent tubelights. This tour is best done on foot, where you walk around the honeycomb lanes, see what whets your appetite and just go for it. Flavours in Bangkok are bright and explosive, with heat, tang and colour, much like their food markets – a haven for foodies.
Eat this: Sample the Pad Thai, street-style, grilled skewers, fried chicken and som tom, to name just a very few. The variety is endless – you can eat your way through the city for the entirety of your trip, but do visit Chinatown and Old Town.
Stay here: The 1905 Heritage Corner is as boutique as it gets – once a tearoom, now a guesthouse laced with character and charm, its got a gentle feel with polished wood bedrooms, metrotiled bathrooms, old-school furniture, and Chinese antiques. 1905heritagecorner.com
A stunning North Indian city dripping in history and the timeless charm of the nawabs, the blue-blooded elites who birthed the Awadhi cuisine in their royal kitchens. This culinary tradition still lives in the winding lanes of the city, a symphony of luxurious flavours and techniques that reflect the excess of wealth of that time. The roots lie in the influence of the Mughal Empire, chooseing subtlety and refinement over the heat the country is synonymous for.
Eat this: You can’t leave without sampling the legendary galouti and kakori kabas, nihari, Lucknowi birynai, sheermal and kulche, served up quick, hot and unfussy on the streets of Aminabad, Chowk, Hazratganj and Akbari Gate.
Stay here: The Taj Mahal Lucknow is a tribute to the bygone era of the city, transporting you back to the glory of the nawabs with splendour and opulence. The beautiful domes, lattice work, expansive gardens, dignified columns and private balconies are sure to whisk you away. @tajmahallucknow
The Punjabi city of Lahore is called the culinary heart of Pakistan, and rightly so. With a unique street food and dining culture, Lahore welcomes hungry patrons with open arms and regales them with tales of spicy kababs, charcoal-grilled meats and fiery curries at stalls and dhabas that come alive at under brightly lit nights. The residents of the city flank their food proudly, and the warm hospitality of this community is one to experience.
Eat this: Kababs are king here – try the seekh kabab, the malai boti, the chapli kabab, all grilled to smoky perfection and spiced with a myriad of flavours. The curries are also quite popular - the karahis with steaming naan is an excellent place to start. Stay here: The Nishat Hotel Gulberg is one of the most premium properties in Lahore, a luxury boutique hotel featuring a whimsical, modern-day approach with it’s printed tiled floors, quirky sculptures and fun artwork. @the_nishat
Lima is considered the undisputed king of South American food cities, and the secret to that lies in how deeply integrated the cuisine is with the local culture. The wealth of local produce ranges from the coast to the mountains and the jungles, and there is no dearth of flavour and colour, with each dish an explosion of tangy, spicy and savoury in your mouth. Community dining is also a huge part of the culture here, hence the emphasis on good food.
Eat this: Peru is, of course, home of a crowd favourite – the ceviche. Here, you can find it on expensive menus in fancy restaurants, but there, this seafood dish marinated in citrus and spices can be found in small, streetside outlets – the freshest catch and the brightest flavours.
Stay here: Hotel B oozes sweet Peruvian charm, first built in 1914 as a summer home for a wealthy family. The white stucco Belle Époque mansion has since been restored and sits firmly as one of Lima’s best hotels. @hotelblima
New Orleans’ culinary history is as rich as it is diverse, with influences spanning French, Spanish, Vietnamese, African and more, all testament to the history of immigration. You’ll find the best, most authentic local fare on the streets all around the city, so put on your walking shoes and get going, making stops at some of their annual festivals honouring their best food.
Eat this: Sample the shrimp Creole, jambalaya, gumbo and red beans and rice, and of course, you can’t forget the beignets. We’ve all seen Chef, and we’ve all loved it. These are things you’ll find in the small joints across the city.
Stay here: Hotel Peter & Paul is a boutique beauty revived from a former 19thcentury Catholic church, schoolhouse, convent, and rectory. It’s bright and whimsical, with mint green doors and canary yellow check-in counter, and it offers an unusual serene escape from the chaos of the streets.

Cairo has a distinct, personal cuisine existing from the time of the pharaohs. It’s derived from the Middle East, while still remaining unique, and dining out or grabbing a drink won’t break your bank. Culinary trips to Cairo come with a flavour of hospitality and diversity, so make sure you explore the backstreets for those stalls and carts.
Eat this: When in Egypt, you can’t miss out on the koshary, the ful medames and the molokhia, all hearty options. Head over to the streets of Khan El-Khalili, Cairo’s largest open-air market, not just for souvenir hunting, or explore Al-Muizz Street and Downtown Cairo.
Stay here: Marriott Mena House has been around for a long time, since 1886, to be precise, but continues to be one of the best hotels in the city. With direct, breathtaking views of the Pyramids of Giza, this property is unmissable.

We all know and love Italian food, the cuisine of choice for many a celebration and special occasion. The history of food in Naples is almost as ancient as the city itself, and the cuisine is a bit more humble than it’s more flashy neighbours. Ingredient-focused, with simple options and all that Neapolitan goodness. Traverse the streets and lanes for some of the best of their signature dishes. It’s strongly authentic, cheap and palate-friendly.
Eat this: The pizza fritta is a no-brainer option, but there are also some great fried, street-food favourites like cuoppo and the pasta frittata. Head over to the Pignasecca district for your eats. Stay here: Duomo House comes with all the romance of the Italian holiday – a B&B that was once an abandoned apartment. Filled with repurposed, quirky antique finds, Duomo House stands out like the rest of it’s B&B counterparts. This is your fun, artsy stay in Italy that you’re going to tell everyone about. @theduomohouse
With a street food culture so strong, you might not need a real restaurant, Istanbul is a must-visit for foodies. The city loves it’s baked goods and meats, with a wide variety to choose from in all those departments, and a subtle profile of flavours that dodges any excesses – spice, oil and the works. Communal dining is big, and they feel quite strongly about some of their delicacies –an ownership that will rope you in, too.
Eat this: Wander the streets and snack on simit, menemn, katmer, Turkish delights and borek, to name a few. The snack game is very strong with this one, with plenty of handheld goodness you can pick up on the side of the streets.
Stay here: Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanhamet is one of the two Four Seasons properties in the city, and sits in the midst of the Old Town, where the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace keep a watchful eye. Once a prison for intellectuals, it is now insanely luxurious, a romantic, historic façade of bright yellow and stunning insides, Turkish textiles and all the opulence.

Lagos is all about food. It takes centre stage in daily life, culture and history, and retains a very distinct and dynamic profile unlike any other cuisine. There is much diversity, with different flavours coming from different regions, and is known for being easy on the pocket without compromising on any of the flavours. Prepare to gorge on Yoruba cuisine.
Eat this: On the streets and in the small buka joints, sample the jollof rice, the suya, the boli and the puff-puff. Like most places, the small, local joints may offer you the most authentic version of the cuisine. Stay here: The Wheatbaker calls itself Lagos’ most iconic hotel, and is a stunning boutique property inspired by art. It’s one of the sleekest places to stay in the city, decorated in minimalist black and white and has all the luxuries a modern traveller would seek, like flatscreen TVs, massive beds and minibars.

A place where you really could spend all four seasons…
While Four Seasons may have global acclaim, I realise it’s my first time checking-in to one of their properties as I drive up to the elegant entrance. One thing I particularly look for in staycations is to be transported to another world. To switch off, reset and live in the moment. Four Seasons did just this for me, and I felt the benefits after an hour of being there.
Upon check-in, a beautiful suite awaited us that looked directly out onto the Arabian Gulf. Our suite was on the corner of the hotel and my favourite place was the balcony that wrapped around the whole sitting room area. From one side you could sit and look out onto the ocean, and on the other you could bask in the view of the Burj Khalifa.
I often get massages, but I don’t often become relaxed enough to fall asleep during them. So, once I found myself jumping awake several times during the massage, it meant the therapist truly did her job well.
We dined one evening in their newly opened Mediterranean, Jou Jou Brasserie, which happened to also be the location for
breakfast. By day, the atmosphere is bright and welcoming, with an extensive spread for guests to enjoy. But at night the ambience was beautifully different: think soft lighting, delicate music and elegant décor that enhanced the romantic feel. The food was delicious, for fish lovers it’s a must try, but the choices were varied for others too. Weather permitting, drinks pre- or postdinner at the glamourous Mercury rooftop bar are also essential for stays here, with fantastic cocktails and stretching views of the city.
A one-night stay for two in June starts from Dhs1,595 per night.
Stunning. And top tip, fresh towel racks at the exit of the pool are an added luxury everyone should make the most of.
