With its burgeoning culinary scene, rich culture, diverse retail and ever-impressive array of hotels, Madrid is always a good idea. If the buzzing Spanish capital isn’t already high on your agenda for 2023, let this comprehensive guide to all the best happenings give you a taste of the good life in Madrid.
April 8, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of renowned Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. To celebrate, the Spanish Capital will host an array of activities as part of a multinational programme put together in collaboration by the French and Spanish governments. This all comes together in an array of curated experiences under the title, Año Picasso.
Among the highlights, catch Picasso/Chanel at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza until Jan 15, 2023, which explores the relationship between Picasso and Gabrielle Chanel. The fascinating exhibition explores the decade of influence the duo of creative talents had on each other, from 1915 to 1925. Through this immersive journey, visitors follow a detailed narrative that shares how both artists creations sought innovation through fashion and cubism. Already ongoing, Espacio 5.1 at IFEMA Madrid is hosting an immersive exhibition of the maestro of modern art until April 10. Celebrating
the acclaimed artist’s most renowned works, it brings together more than 200 works to the same space at the same time for a first-of-its-kind exhibition in Spain. Many of the pieces are from private collections or from iconic museums around the world.
The year of Picasso will also see exhibitions unveiled at Madrid’s renowned Museo del Prado, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and Museo Reina Sofia. Picasso – El Greco is an homage to the 50th anniversary of the Andalusian painter, interspersing his works with that of El Greco, one of his biggest influences. It’s running at the Prado from June 13 to September 17. At the Royal Academy, you’ll be able to check out the most important private collection of Picasso works from March 29 to July 2, with many never-before-seen pieces in the region. Then at Museo Reina Sofia, Picasso 1906: The Great Transformation will show the artist’s contribution to the birth of modern art. Through a current perspective, this exhibition illustrates how Picasso’s influence lives on. Catch it from November 14, 2023 to March 4, 2024.
Joining the ranks of luxurious new showstoppers like The Madrid EDITION and Four Seasons Madrid, JW Marriott, Plaza de Canalejas will soon welcome guests. A new addition to the Galeria Canalejas, the upscale getaway promises 139 rooms spread across 10,000 square metres, with an overall aesthetic influenced by the principles of mindfulness.
Elsewhere, from 2024, guests will be able to check-in to Nobu Hotel Madrid in the heart of the Cortes district. For gourmands, the hotel will offer a tri-level Nobu restaurant and bar, an expansive rooftop bar, and a lounge with views over the skyline.
A defining moment for the showcase of Spain’s national heritage and cultural activity will be the opening of Gallery of Royal Collections. Due to open in the summer of 2023, once inaugurated this promises to be a beacon of cultural diversity, designed to showcase the rich Spanish history and heritage. The backbone of the Royal Palace complex, it will be a show-stopping new addition, accessed from Plaza de la Almudena, and from the Campo de Moro and Madrid Rio gardens.
The world’s largest museum dedicated to football is also due to open in Madrid next year. Across six floors of immersive entertainment, Legends Museum, The Temple of Football promises endless experiences for football fins in the Puerta del Sol region. Taking visitors on a chronological journey through the history of the sport, some 4,000 artefacts will be on display, alongside a gaming area, and a gastronomic space on the rooftop.
A new addition arriving before the end of 2022 will become a must-visit destination in 2023: the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The unveiling of the iconic stadium’s new look – and new spaces – promises to be a highlight for sports fans. Among the new additions, there’s a new stand on the east side of the stadium, a retractable roof and a large cornice built over the square which forms a large entrance atrium.

It’s been the question that’s dominated most of my WhatsApp group chats in recent weeks. It seems like a pretty straightforward question, right? I suppose the straightforward answer is no. I won’t be trading palm trees for fir trees and sand for snow this December, not that there’s a chance of that in northwest England.
But seven years as an expat and two years spent living through a travel-halting pandemic has taught me that family comes in many forms. One of them, you’ll find pictured below. My What’s On family, all looking rather festively fetching in matching Marks & Spencer’s Christmas pyjamas. While I won’t be fighting my sisters for the last mince pie or listening to my mum and aunt hotly debate who burnt the custard, I’ll be tucking into a Christmas feast with this marvelous bunch, each one bringing their own traditions from home. Miles, no doubt, will be adding hot sauce to every inch of his meal; Aarti will take responsibility for ensuring everyone gets an equal slice of dessert; and Shelby will be on DJ duties, although hopefully without introducing us to a Gen-Z remix of a Christmas classic.
That’s one of those brilliant things about being an expat in Dubai – the way cultures, interests and habits from all corners of the globe slot so perfectly together. We may have different ways of decorating the tree, cooking the turkey or using up the leftovers, but it doesn’t matter. In fact, it’s one of the best things about it.
Another form family takes for me, is you. Our wonderful, opinionated, knowledgeable readers. You laugh with us, you inspire us, and you put us in our place from time to time. But that’s exactly what family is for, right?
So ask me again if I’m spending Christmas with family. And the answer is, yes.
From all of us at What’s On, we wish you a Merry Christmas.

So, the chances of a White Christmas in the desert are slim, but thanks to Ski Dubai, you can visit a year-round winter wonderland. It’s particularly magical during the festive period. You’ll find me at the Snow Cinema, keeping toasty with a mug of hot chocolate and watching Home Alone. skidxb.com

Having grown up in Dubai, my European friends ask me if it’s strange to not have a cold Christmas. I always find that an odd question as it’s all I’ve ever known. When we go to the beach on Christmas morning, there is always a fresh and dewy breeze, and the sea is crisp.

UAE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Tell us who you are and what makes you famous?
I’m the CEO of the largest real estate company in Dubai, Allsopp & Allsopp. We average around 4,000 property transactions a year with over 500 staff working for the business.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I wake up at 6am so that I can have breakfast with my two beautiful children, Myla who
is three and my 18-month-old son, Harvey. After breakfast, I head to the gym. This keeps my mind as sharp as possible – if I don’t train I feel I’m not at my best. Then I’ll head into the office where the first thing on my agenda is to meet the senior management team. We have seven businesses under the Allsopp & Allsopp Group, so it’s important that I get information from the management to make decisions on their division’s directions. I always aim to be home for dinner and bath time with the kids.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I worked out that I Deliveroo at least 20 times a week. I genuinely believe it’s cheaper and more time efficient than cooking myself.
If you weren’t CEO of Allsopp & Allsopp, what would you be doing?
I’d be a professional FIFA player.
What’s the best purchase you’ve ever made?
For the last 15 years, I’ve bought and sold properties in Dubai. My most fruitful investments in recent times have been my property in Atlantis The Royal and my home in Jumeriah Golf Estates. Both were investments I made with my gut knowing the market was going to take an upward trajectory when everyone else was fearful. My gut was right.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned from building your business in the UAE?
Nothing lands on your door for free. If you want something you have to take action.
Do you think Dubai will be home forever?
I have been in Dubai since I was 19, which means I have spent the majority of my adult life living in this amazing city. So yes, I would say this is my forever home, but we do go back to London in the summer to work (and to escape the wild humidity). I’m lucky to be able to do my job from anywhere.
What are your plans for the business in 2023?
We aim to double our workforce to stay aligned with the growth of Dubai’s population and new property handovers.
@lewis_allsoppdubai

It’s probably the most classic of Dubai’s desert experiences, but an early morning Camel Trek is one we’ll never tire of. With Arabian Adventures, you’ll be picked up and driven about an hour out of town to their private desert reserve. To get to the destination, expect to take a 4×4 ride, with a guided tour to help you spot the local wildlife and see Arabian Oryx. Then it’s onto the camel ride. It’s either a single person or double trip, and it takes around 40 minutes to make the journey to the waterside breakfast spot, but there’s plenty of opportunities to snap selfies on your way. At breakfast, expect a continental spread that includes pastries, croissants, fresh fruit and juices. A glass of bubbly gives it the ‘Dubai’ touch, and you’ll enjoy a leisurely break before you make your way back to the 4×4, which will then return you to your destination. Whether you’ve been in Dubai forever, you’re just visiting, or you’re looking to show visitors a great time, this is one trip you must add to your winter bucket list.

In the women’s tournament, teams including New Zealand, France and Fiji will all be competing in the hopes of dethroning Australia, the 2021 winners.
Elsewhere, the Emirates Dubai 7s plays host to the invitational tournament, the largest mass-participation rugby 7s tournament in the world. This year, teams from every corner of the globe will descend on the Sevens pitches across 15 divisions of play that include international and GGC divisions of vets rugby 10s, social, and youth matches.
But there’s so much more than just rugby. After a successful inaugural event in 2021, the fast-paced Cricket 7s takes over the world-class ovals with open and social competitions for men, women and mixed teams. There’s also netball –a crowd pleaser since its addition in 2014 – which will see women’s social and mixed netball added to the mix of competitive and social teams for the first time this year. And new for 2022, the Sevens gets its first taste of functional fitness with WODON3, an inclusive fitness competition with three divisions to push yourself in: social, open and athlete. Competitors will test all aspects of their fitness from strength to power, speed and endurance across limit-pushing power workouts lasting between 10 and 30 minutes.

Miami comes to Dubai at this lively new spot
The freshest addition to Palm Jumeirah’s bustling strip, West Beach, is a Miami-inspired restaurant by the name of Black Flamingo. It stands out among its neighbours thanks to a vivid colour scheme used across its furniture, art, and interior decor. Parasols in bright teal or magenta signify you’ve reached the right place, as does the custom flamingo statue. Inside, tasselled bar stools and tables add fun texture to the bar area, while the lounge boasts a catwalk-style stage with sofa seating on each side. A neon palm tree lights up one wall, while on the ceiling the theme continues with a tropical mural and flamingo-themed chandeliers.
The menu is Caribbean, a somewhat underserved cuisine in the city, but perfectly fits with the vibe of the venue. Created and overseen by renowned Dubai chef, Reif Othman, guests are treated to an authentic
selection of dishes from the West Indies.
Proceedings start off strong with a portion of chips and guacamole (Dhs55) and beef empanadas (Dhs78 for five pieces). Despite not being prepared tableside, it’s clear that the guacamole is fresh, and the super-crispy chips certainly taste homemade. Each empanada was well-stuffed with flavourful and juicy pulled beef, the ratio of pastry to meat excellently balanced.
Upon recommendation we try the coconut seafood ceviche (Dhs88). The coarsely chopped seafood arrives in a bath of chilli and coconut broth that we’d have happily finished off with a straw. The combination of creamy and spicy juice along with the varied mix of seafood and the sweetness of juicy lychee pieces was surprising and delicious. The beef skirt fresh tacos (Dhs82) are also a must-try, as the tender steak, crunchy veg and soft tortilla create the perfect balance of texture and flavours.
A special mention must go to the staff, who seem overjoyed to play a part in the
opening of the fun new restaurant. Not only are they attentive without being overbearing, and knowledgeable about the menu, but they also bring good vibes to help you feel welcome from the offset. A playlist of new and classic R&B tunes also elevates the atmosphere, and – along with the decor, menu and mixology – helps to transport us to Miami with every song.
We finish our meal in an impressively creative fashion, through a dish named el mejor coco (Dhs78). The dish has taken months to perfect, we’re told, and includes a fully edible chocolate nest, and a chocolate ‘coconut’ filled with mango, dragon fruit and orange jelly, and coconut ice cream. It’s light by dessert standards, but still feels indulgent as we break the chocolate shell to reach the fruit.

Sublimotion returned for its second season last month, promising even more culinary theatrics than before. The hyper-exclusive immersive dinner experience dropped jaws with its Dhs5,000 per person price tag, causing everyone to ask: is it worth it? The new season brings a new menu, refreshed entertainment and the introduction of a slightly less eyewatering package of Dhs3,500 for those who don’t wish to drink alcohol.
Found in the ultra-luxe Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Sublimotion has its own entrance, guided through a LED tunnel. The experience begins in a mini library, with hotel keys hanging behind the bar. Instead of being asked which welcome drink we would like, fate decides for us as we choose a playing card from the pack. “You were born to be a player. This moment is yours. Destiny,”
it reads, and the bartender begins shaking up a long, amber-toned cocktail.
We’re ushered into the main room and take our seats based on the name projected onto the table. We’re sat in white wheely chairs around a large board-room style table, with a mirrored wall on each end of the room, and full projection on the remaining two walls.
Proceedings begin with rosé Champagne, which is delivered via a suspended diamondshaped bucket gently lowered to the table. A spiral projection on the table indicates where the glass should be placed, and the team of waiters pour each one in synchronicity. The courses that follow grow in creativity when it comes to both presentation and delivery, however some of the tastes and textures we found to be a little too ‘creative’ for our liking.
When it comes to the entertainment,
however, the more unusual, the better. One moment we’re gliding through waterfalls and mountainscapes via a VR headset, the next we’re being pulled across the room on our wheely chair to a Dutchinspired picnic.
If we were to pick a favourite course it would be the aeroplane meal, which we were served after watching the waitress’ rendition of Britney Spears’ Toxic music video. From the trolley, we’re presented with a plastic tray housing plates of artistically presented sea bass fillet, mash potato covered in edible gold leaf, and snow peas in a pumpkin marinade.
The full experience lasts around two-and-a-half hours, which works out at about Dhs33 per minute. Is the dinner worth the price tag? That really depends on your perspective, but if you’re tired of Dubai’s usual restaurant offering, Sublimotion will certainly be an extraordinary alternative.
Sublimotion, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, daily, 6.30pm or 9.30pm, Dhs3,500 soft drinks, Dhs5,000 Champagne. Tel: (0)4 777 2250. @sublimotiondubai

Best known as the Mexican party restaurant inside Anantara Downtown, La Mezcaleria opened a second outpost at Pavilion at The Beach in JBR earlier this year. With inspiring views over Ain Dubai and jungle-chic interiors, the restaurant serves Mexican classics, including tacos, quesadillas, and more.

Located on the 31st floor of the new W Dubai Mina Seyahi, Attiko recently began welcoming guests to enjoy its pan-Asian cuisine and incredible views of Palm Jumeirah. The rooftop lounge is influenced by an Asian garden with floor-to-ceiling windows, a large outdoor terrace, and crafted menu.

After 14 years, Ronda Locatelli at Atlantis, The Palm officially closed its doors this year. The much-loved fine-dining restaurant by Italian master chef Giorgio Locatelli is set to be replaced by colourful South American restaurant, En Fuego, before the end of the year.
It was a short but sweet run for Jolie, the French Mediterranean brasserie at The Dubai Edition, which is now no more less than a year after opening. Although it’s yet to be replaced, there are plans for several exciting new restaurants to open in the near future, including Japanese restaurant Sumosan and a new iteration of Masti.
Chic Nonna, the long-awaited Italian gourmet osteria opened in the heart of DIFC earlier this year. With views of Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai, the two-storey, upscale venue boasts authentic Italian flavours with a contemporary twist, and one of the chicest lounges Dubai has ever seen.

The expectation on Kyma is especially high. Not only is its plot on arguably the most sought-after strip of sand in the city, Palm West Beach, but it’s also the latest opening from Rikas Group, who made Dubai Creek one of the dreamiest locations for a beach day when they opened Twiggy by La Cantine in January 2021. Found close to instant-hit neighbours February 30 and Surf Club, Kyma stands out from its fellow residents by surrounding itself almost entirely with lush plants. Verdant bushes, towering Palm trees and tall grasses encase the earthy stone structure of the beach club. It’s like stepping into an exclusive hideaway when you make your way inside. Kyma’s Grecian inspiration is everywhere, and thanks to the abundance of plants, it has a gorgeous island-getaway aesthetic. At the centre, an inviting infinity pool is surrounded by plush sun loungers, each shaded by macrame parasols that dapple, but don’t block the sun. It might sound unusual, but a special mention should be given to the imported sand – soft and sugary, it adds to the instant escapism. In fact, as we settle into a lounger by the pool, the perfectly framed Dubai Marina skyline backdrop is the only reminder that we’ve not left the shores of the UAE. Melodic house tunes are atmospheric but not overbearing, and in the balmy midday heat, we refresh with dips in the temperature-controlled water, cold flannels, which are handed to guests
at regular intervals, and fresh coconuts (Dhs45).
Although a more concise menu of modern Greek eats is available to order to your lounger, we don’t want to miss out on the extensive menu designed by chef Gilles Bosquet, so move to the alfresco restaurant for lunch. We’re instantly glad we did, as we peruse the extensive list of crudo and ceviches, hot starters, salads, pastas and grills.
Sharing starters arrive as they’re ready, something we don’t mind – but isn’t always popular. The crispy zucchini (Dhs56) is so lightly battered and fried that it almost melts in our mouth and we delight in every mouthful. The perfect parcels of feta in fylo (Dhs89) are another delicious hit: cheesy, crispy and drizzled with just the right amount of sweet honey. The sea bream carpaccio (Dhs72) is a narrow favourite, each sliver topped with a truffle vinaigrette. For our main, we opt to share a lobster pasta (Dhs425 for two), which arrives as a generous bowl of
al dente pasta, swirled in a tomato and capsicum sauce, and while we might not be able to finish it all, we pick out all of the chunks of fresh lobster so as not to miss a mouthful. The lamb chops (Dhs240) arrive piping hot from the charcoal grill, simply served with a light oregano seasoning and roasted tomatoes, and we’re glad we order a side of hand cut fries (Dhs45).
This is elevated beachside dining that goes far beyond a menu of typical beach club eats and the stunning setting makes it hard to tear ourselves away as the sun begins to set beyond the horizon. Kyma, Palm West Beach, daily, 10am to sunset pool, 12pm to 1am restaurant. Tel: (0)4 666 5999. kymabeach.ae
A bold claim to make, but this could be a strong contender for Dubai’s best new beach club.

A beloved French brasserie has opened another outpost…
Couqley, a much-loved restaurant in JLT, known for its snug setting and authentic feel, has recently opened a branch in Pullman Dubai Downtown, Business Bay, taking the original concept and revamping it to create a new, bright and chic experience.
Greeted by stunning red doors upon arrival, we are transported into a chic French bistro as soon as we walk through. At the centre of the restaurant is a heightened bar boasting the signature Couqley cockerel hung from the ceiling. To the left we spot an open-style kitchen and to the right is a private dining area.
The interiors provide a real feel for France, paintings and décor are all reminiscent of mid-century style, while the alfresco dining is adorned with hanging
plants and greenery that one would expect in Paris.
We start off with two varieties of steak tartare. The classic steak tartare (Dhs119) was an instant hit, and we couldn’t resist scooping up more of the flavourful meat onto our toast. The wagyu steak tartare et truffes (Dhs137) was not quite as tasty but still managed to satisfy our truffle craving. Next, we move onto the poélée de champignons (Dhs76). The poélée’s mushroom sauce was deliciously creamy, and well balanced against the ratio of flaky pastry. We couldn’t waste a single morsel, so much so that we swiftly reorder. Naturally at any French restaurant, we had to try the escargot de Bourgogne (Dhs61 for six).
The snails were cooked to perfection, and drenched in butter, garlic and herbs – just the way they should be.
Making our way through the main courses, we try Couqley’s signature steak
There is not a single negative thing to say about Couqley. Perfectly cooked food, incredible service and the new venue is refreshing and inviting.
frites (Dhs137). We requested it medium rare and the steak arrived at optimum temperature, which alongside with Couqley’s signature sauce, really sealed the deal. We also enjoyed the sea bass en papillote (Dhs129), which was served in a foil bag to ensure all of the juices remained, and led to the most flavourful, tender fish.
Dessert consisted of a crème brûlée (Dhs41) and the pain perdu (Dhs55).
The crème brûlée arrived perfectly caramelised with sweet vanilla cream underneath. However, the real showstopper is the pain perdu. It was crispy on the edges and deliciously soft on the inside, the thickness of the brioche was perfect, and the balance of cinnamon and vanilla ice cream perfectly rounded out the day. Couqley, Pullman Dubai Downtown, daily 12pm to 1am. couqley.ae
Find out who secured a place in the inaugural Michelin Guide Abu Dhabi
The plat is now out of the Michelin bag in Abu Dhabi and based on the whims and wants of its inspectors, we’ve learned who’s kind of a big deal on the capital’s culinary scene. A significant 42 restaurants were added to this inaugural 2023 Guide, four were awarded the sought-after Bib Gourmand status (good, affordably priced food) and three more were honoured with what is likely international gastronomy’s most coveted prize of all, a Michelin Star.
Three restaurants were each awarded one Michelin Star in Abu Dhabi as part of the 2023 guide.
But who are these Michelin winners, and why should we care? Well, if you like good food – you’ll struggle to find a better respected independent arbiter of taste, than our friends at Michelin. Their rigorous testing method applies science to art, and rates experience based on the quality of the ingredients, the mastery of cooking, the harmony of flavours, the personality of the chef through the cuisine and the consistency both over time and across the entire menu (each restaurant is visited multiple times).

After the Guide announcements, we predict that this (Spanish by birth) haute Japanese cuisine concept is probably experiencing somewhere in the region of 99 problems seating all the people trying to get a table now. These are of course great problems for the sushi house, based in The Galleria Al
Maryah Island, to have. And whilst the volume of attention is likely new, 99 Sushi has been a central pillar of Abu Dhabi’s fine dining circuit since 2017. Their signature dishes include wagyu and Kobe prime cuts, otoro nigiri, blue fin carpaccio, Hokkaido uni, gyozas, and king crab salad. They’re also known for adding exciting European flexes onto Asian cuisine. We’re talking tinkering with truffle and figuring out new ways to use foie gras.
@99sushibaruae
The name ‘Hakkasan’ represents a global chain of high-end Cantonese restaurants, with strong links to the Guide. Two London Hakkasans have won Michelin Stars, and Dubai’s own location gained one in its inaugural guide earlier this year. And this Abu Dhabi outpost, found in a very special location, has now joined that list. You’ll find it at Emirates Palace, plating up artful servings of dim sum, seafood, spice and other food fire, often based on ancient
Chinese recipes. Our picks from the Abu Dhabi menu? Typhoon lobster, Chilean sea bass with organic honey and the supreme dim sum selection. The aesthetic element of the courses at Hakkasan is important, yes, but the art is indistinguishable from the eating. It’s all about the holistic experience. The chef is speaking through the food, and whilst we can try to describe it here, the only way to hear this beautiful mantra is to try it.
@hakkasanabudhabiEmirates Palace now finds itself represented by a binary star system, with the relatively recent launch of Talea. It’s a culinary engine driven by multiple Michelin Star-honoured Chef Antonio Guida. A modern space, there are faux frescos on the wall depicting scenes from various Italian cities and highlighted detailing on the ceiling coves. We swooned over the calamari alla griglia, and gushed in hushed cooing sounds over what they did to a fillet of ricciola (amberjack). And what is now their verified ‘Michelin Star’ range of pizza, represents the perfect way to introduce yourself to the kitchen’s incredible flavours on a relative budget. Talea is an Italian job extremely well done, blowing the doors of our expectations clean off. Best Italian fine dining in the city? It just might be.
@taleauae
Located along the picturesque, beachfront promenade of Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Beirut Sur Mer comes painted in scintillating botanical aesthetics, paired with a remarkably strong Levantine menu. The menu is absolutely gargantuan, filled with a mezze myriad with dishes such as quinoa tabbouleh, crab moutabal, and halloumi bil teen. Beirut Sur Mer offers the finest service and a vast menu that will leave you wanting to linger for hours if only to try more plates of mezze, but don’t be like us – save room for your mains.
@beirutsurmer
You’ll find expertly crafted ArmenianLebanese dining at The Galleria Al Maryah Island’s Almayass, and in line with the defining requirement of the Bib Gourmand award, it won’t break the bank. This cross of two culinary
houses, both alike in dignity, translates into some great mash-up mezze items – kebbeh karaz, ras asfour with cherry sauce, manti, bastermi, and shanklish lead the pack for us.
@almayass_abudhabi
The second of two Al Qana entries, Tazal’s range and quality of Mediterranean meets Middle Eastern fare impressed the inspectors enough to earn a solid Bib Gourmand nod. The creative menu includes fusion dishes such as peri-peri chicken biryani, seafood machboos paella,
chicken kaaksadilla, wagyu al mosul, and a Korean lamb explosion with cumin tuile. It’s fair to say the restaurant’s claim that these are ‘brave twists’ certainly checks out, but given the recent Michelin acknowledgement, it seems it was a flavour experiment worth making.
@tazaluae
Locally based culinary legend, chef Akmal Anuar (whose Dubai restaurant 11 Woodfire won a Star in the inaugural Dubai Michelin Guide) opened his first Abu Dhabi restaurant this year, and it’s a keeper. The location pin drop is at the canal front destination Al Qana, the seat of so much exciting new gastronomic and leisure murmurings in the capital. Otoro is an authentic and clinically studied reenvisaging of an Osakan kitchen, and beyond the stunning nigiri options (of which, naturally the otoro fatty tuna is their expertly crafted signature), our pick of the dazzling dishes was the melt-in-the-mouth shabu shabu burger. A burger like no other, its moreish wagyu slices, perfectly toasted bun and buttery caramelised onion make every bite jucier than the last. We licked our fingers clean. @otoro.ad
The inspectors aren’t only focusing on food while they dine, they’re also looking out for shining stars among the service. In this year’s guide, there are three Abu Dhabi contenders for special awards. Service Award: Rawad Hamdan and team, Restaurant Li Beirut Sommelier Award: Marlon Nuque, Zuma Restaurant Young Chef Award: Luigi Stinga, Restaurant Talea by Antonio Guida
Call it blasphemy, but some of us are big fans of the end of the week brunch. For one, it’s the perfect way to escape the Sunday scaries, preferably with a cocktail in hand. Secondly, Sunday brunches are always just a little more… refined.
At relatively new Monaco import Mayabay – located at the far side of Jumeirah Al Naseem’s turtle lagoon –chef Shane MacNeil has designed an extensive Asian-influenced Sunday brunch menu that’s both elegant and bountiful.
Inside, Mayabay is loosely split into three areas: a large lounge area, even larger main dining room, a smaller private dining space as well as an enormous open kitchen, with an army of chefs working diligently at their stations. The ceilings are high – so high in fact that on one side of the main dining room, a DJ,
guitarist and singer perform sporadically throughout brunch from a balcony to the guests below.
We’re at the second Sunday that Mayabay has hosted brunch and all the tables are full. There are couples, families and groups of friends all looking relaxed as they sit on the plush-red chairs and nosey through the extensive menu.
Here’s the general gist: guests are welcome to choose one soup from a selection of three; three appetisers each, and two mains and sides each. Oh, and there’s unlimited sushi and sashimi, and unlimited dim sum. In short, it’s a feast fit for an emperor, and his entire family.
Can’t-miss items we recommend for your brunch table: prawn toast with Thai chilli sauce, which are more like piping-hot prawn parcels; Cantonese roast duck tacos;
chicken and shrimp xiao long bao soup dumplings (unlimited, can you believe?); shui jao, an elegant take on the traditional shui mai only with smoked scallop, chicken and carrot; and, of course a trip to the sashimi and sushi counter for a plateful of the good stuff. And that’s all before you’ve even reached the main courses, which run the gamut of top Asian specialities. Think Dubai’s favourite black cod with yuzu miso sauce, plus Thai green curry, wok beef and pad Thai with prawns, chicken, or tofu. Mix and match menu items to your heart’s desire and enjoy one of two Asian-inspired cocktails or sake to wash it all down.
Despite the unlimited drinks packages, Mayabrunch never sways into rowdy territory, probably because it’s Sunday. Instead, it remains upbeat and elegant with well executed Asian cuisine – a combination that works very well.

Located on the rooftop of Canary Club, Tiki’s is the newest rooftop lounge in JLT. From the second we arrive, we start gushing over the venue. With a long bar and thatched roof, we snap pictures of the venue as mixologists are busy creating unique cocktails. Next to the bar, a DJ is spinning house tunes under a disco ball.
Tables are placed in a line opposite the bar under a bamboo roof with hanging geometric wooden lamps. Plants segregate each table giving diners an intimate dining experience without losing out on the view.
Despite the foliage, Tiki’s manages not to
go overboard with the decor, instead opting for a more minimalistic approach. There’s another dining space at the far end with white sofas and low dining chairs – a spot we’re told is already popular for events and occasions.
When it comes time to order drinks, we pick from the special cocktail section unique to the lounge. First up is Coconut Skies (Dhs70), a whiskey-based coconut creme drink, was a refreshing sweet delight and the Cobra’s Fang (Dhs65), an Aperol Spritz with a habanero reduction – an element that added a spicy note to an otherwise sweet drink. The
Boozy Suzy (Dhs88) is great gin-based option, while the Pina Colada in a coconut shell is also a must-try.
For bites, we opt for the braised short rib taco (Dhs85), which comes with a juicy filling packed generously inside a crispy taco shell. The sushi platter (Dhs195, only available on Mondays) comes with four dishes. We loved the salmon aburi – a medley of torched salmon, crab meat, shrimp tempura and aioli, which was a delicious mouthful of flavour; and we quickly polished off the ceviche, which had the right acidic touch.
For desserts, the churro tarte tatin (Dhs48) with pineapple compote and ice cream is nestled in a sugary crispy churro bowl and won us over as the dish of the night. For cocoa fans, try the the flourless chocolate cake (Dhs58) with ice cream for a light yet gooey treat.

A spot we’re sure will be a huge hit with the JLT crowd and beyond.
Be honest, how many Christmas movies really stand up to the annual rewatch test? You’ve got Elf, Love Actually and The Holiday as the big presents under the theatrical tree. After you’ve unwrapped those, you’re left with the cinematic equivalent of satsumas and itchy socks from Aunt Doris. But if you fancy adding a bit of abstract tinsel into your festive film rotation, these are our suggestions for the best Christmas movies that aren’t actually Christmas movies. And we’re not including Die Hard, because that is a proper Christmas movie.
Christmas films tend to follow one of a collection of pretty formulaic plot structures: Santa duties are suddenly thrust onto an unsuspecting recipient; a lifelong humbug enthusiast softens after finally feeling the true magic of Christmas; a stressful Christmas pushes a couple/individual/group to breaking point, only to be revived from the brink by the aforementioned Yuletide woo-woo. Less common, however, are comedies about assassins hiding out in quaint, admittedly dull, Christmas market-festooned Belgian cities, impatiently waiting for their next wet work contract. And whilst it’s unlikely to flush much Xmas cheer down your existential chimney, it is a very, very good movie with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes all putting in ho-ho-honestly brilliant performances.
Essentially a lesson on the perils of not reading your Ts and Cs thoroughly. But make it festive. A travelling salesman buys a mysterious cuddly creature from the Pennsylvanian equivalent of DragonMart, as a last-minute panic-purchase Christmas gift for his son. The acquisition comes with a few easy to follow ownership rules, but ones if not followed will result in dire consequences. After his owners accidentally and still somehow systematically break the pet care protocols one by one, the cuddly protagonist Gizmo inadvertently sires a litter of carnage-mongering, very unChristmas-spirited lizard babies. The town is swept by a one-species, Gremlin crimewave, punctuated by incidents ranging in severity from minor mischief to willfull murder. There is a way to defeat them, but it was laid out in those pesky terms and conditions that seem to have gone unheeded.
Everyone has a little bit of Grinch in them, right?
The Christmas element of this movie is essentially window dressing for what is a Dickensian de-Scroogeing of a Wall Street banker, via a ‘this is what you could have won’ glimpse at an alternate life. The one he would be living if he’d only chosen love over greed. Yes, it’s sentimental, absolutely predictable, and occasionally silly, but it’s heartfelt, enjoys some great lead performances from Tea Leoni and old Saint Nick (Cage), and ends in a teasingly unresolved way that perfectly parallels post-Chrimbo-pre-NYE interim ennuis.
Originally slated to star Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, this comedy sees a wealthy commodity broker switch fortunes with a lowly street hustler, in order to test a hypothesis on the validity of class structure. That makes it sound noble. It isn’t. It’s a calculated, subterfuge-laden switcheroo that threatens to irrevocably ruin the lives of two, probably unfair to say innocent but on balance ostensibly good, men – all over what amounts to a dispute on eugenics. “What’s all this got to do with Christmas then?”, the choral line of carol singers in our head cheer. Again, the festive setting is mainly a decorative element in the movie, but it does end up being an essential part of a concluding plot mechanism. And we’ll stop there, unless you’ve been bad this year in which case you’re getting nothing but spoilers in your stocking.
This is probably the closest thing to an actual Christmas movie in our round-up. It’s a 1988 black comedy and shameless Bill Murray vehicle that essentially amounts to a modern (albeit 34-year-old modern) reimagining of A Christmas Carol. Murray plays Frank Cross, a gleefully cruel and miserly TV exec, who’s sacrificed a shot at true love for a Santa’s sack-sized salary package. After swapping out the seasonal cash bonuses he promised to his staff for vanity towel sets, Cross is visited by a series of three apparations who all attempt to show him the avaricious error of his ways. As a bonus bit of meta narrativising, the events are set against a backdrop of Murray’s character overseeing a television production of the Dickins novella that the film is itself parodying.
Each entry in this branch of the Wizarding World saga usually covers a full academic year of ‘I dunno, that Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher looks a bit dodgy mate’. That means we’re often voyeurs for Harry’s orphan Christmas, frequently spent alone or with scant company hanging out in and around the Gryffindor common room. It’s not all bad news though, Dumbledore buys the best presents and it beats Boxing Day dinner with the Dursleys. Imagine how aggressive those games of Monopoly would get.
On December 3, Rockstar rap impresario, Post Malone, will take to the stage at Etihad Park, (formally du Arena).
Real name Austin Post, Malone selected the second half of his stage moniker allegedly from a rap name generator. Back before his Rap Billboard number ones, Posty, an artist that most consistently cites Bob Dylan as his biggest influence, had already spent time playing guitar in a heavy metal band.
Seeking out new sound experiences, Malone went on to swap shred for dreads, and grew a devoted Soundcloud audience with his unique blend of hip hop, trap, alt rock, pop and electro. The genre-melting break-out hit on debut album Stoney, was 2017’s aspirational Congratulations, which features the artist rapping and singing over what would become signature trap drum loops.
The soulful hooks kept rolling on through his 2018 multiaward-winning second album, with Rockstar taking the US 100 number one spot. His third album Hollywood’s Bleeding dropped just a year later in 2019 and although it spins with a slightly more refined sound, that same skillful blending of musical styles threads through the track list. For a quick demo of audio
diversity, channel your inner shuffle button and play singles Wow and Circles back-to-back, comparing musical notes.
Post Malone’s December 2022 performance won’t be the first time he’s lit up a Yas Island stage. He was here for 2018’s F1 Yasalam After-Race concerts, droppin’ bangers, and poppin’ shawarmas like a rockstar. His performance of Congratulations is always an emotional one, offering a pre-stardom snapshot of the Malone mindset.
It also includes the line ‘worked so hard forgot how to vacation’. And that hasn’t changed. In addition to the Herculean toil ethic that saw him put out three albums in three years, play tours, make podcast appearances, enjoy numerous ‘featured’ credits – the New York state native also somehow found time to take up acting roles in Guy Richie’s Wrath of Man, and Peter Berg’s Spenser Confidential. Still, we’d vote for his (five-time) collaboration with the pragmatic footwear brand, Crocs as his most rapper-expectation-defying behaviour.
One thing you can expect from a Post Malone concert though, is one epic show.

Dubai’s arts scene has recently made a strong comeback and is once again hosting its most popular annual events. One festival that stands out from the rest is the much-loved streetwear event, Sole DXB, which returns to Dubai Design District from December 9 to 11 after a two-year haitus.
And for Sole fans, the event is back for its 10-year anniversary edition which means plenty of soulful fun. As with past events, this year’s festival has been built on its four pillars of music, fashion, visual arts, and sports.
Sole DXB last took place in 2019 and saw over 36,000 attendees with entertainment from more than 100 performers, designers, speakers and brands over the three-day event. This year, we can expect those numbers to be a lot higher as everyone is eagerly awaiting its return.
In each edition, Sole DXB spotlights a different sub-culture. This year, the festival will celebrate the excellence across the Arab World and its diaspora.
Over the summer, the team – who has worked with visionary Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj – travelled to Morocco to learn and draw inspiration from the culture and to connect with creators and creatives. Expect to see a number of musicians, designers, artists and speakers from across Morocco and the Arab World.
Speaking of the collaboration, Hassan Hajjaj said: “Sole DXB is a space where you can come and be yourself and one where you are celebrated for who you are”.
He added: “I believe that art can move us forward. It can dispel stereotypes. I believe in our youth and the next generation of creators that are showing us that we aren’t just consumers of the culture but are actively contributing to it.”
Speaking on his work with the festival this year, he stated: “My work this year with Sole DXB was to build a space that was a reflection of those shared values. The Arab world is not a monolith. It’s a collection of diverse people with a shared heritage. Our contributions to the world have changed the course of history and we’re here to show that we aren’t out of ideas.”
“I BELIEVE THAT ART CAN MOVE US FORWARD”

London’s hottest studio lands in DIFC – are you ready for 1Rebel?
There’s a fresh face of fitness in Dubai that’s hell-bent on helping you torch calories. Like all great uprisings, 1Rebel stormed into the city with an air of unwavering defiance. It’s battle location? The prestigious ICD Brookfield Place in DIFC. The famous London fitness brand, which first opened in 2015, changed the appearance of the fitness industry with its dynamic workout concepts and focus on slick interior design. Renowned for its high intensity workouts, its latest international opening, 1Rebel Dubai, encapsulates an urban chic aesthetic balanced with a side of Dubai glitz. Currently, guests can book into 1Rebel’s two high-energy, workout disciplines – Ride, the brand’s signature spinning concept, and Reshape, encompassing quick-fire rounds of treadmill intervals, alongside vigorous weight sequences – as well as the brand’s first and only open gym floor featuring over 100 pieces of TechnoGym equipment, along with a cardio and a strength zone. As with any workout, it’s all about the trainers – their charisma, enthusiasm, and killer playlist – that can make or break an experience. What’s On chats to two of the new instructors fresh off the plane from London…
Instructor for: Reshape
You’re new to our shores – how does life compare to the UK?
Well, the weather is certainly far better, and the motorways are crazier, but it still has that fast-paced life that I love.
How would you describe a Reshape class to newbies?
Be prepared for a fun and challenging workout, one that you might not have experienced before.
Are we going to feel dead or revitalised after class?
You’ll feel like you can take on whatever comes your way.
When you’re not leading a class what are you up to?
When I’m not at 1Rebel, I love to catch up with my friends, work out and do other sports.
Welcome to Dubai. What are your first impressions?
Thank you! I first noticed just how shiny everything is. The people are all so kind and helpful, and the weather is just amazing.
How would you describe a Ride class to newbies?
Our 1Rebel studios are designed in such a way that coming to a Ride class is like stepping into a club with your favourite music playing.
What do you reckon sets 1Rebel apart from other gyms?
Our classes are epic, and now we have our beautiful open gym for you to come and enjoy. It’s an experience that you’ll never forget.
What song(s) are we likely to hear on your playlist right now?
I’m an all-rounder. I’ll give you throwback ‘90s jams, techno and melodic house, all in one class. Right now I’m loving 3 Wheelups by Kano, Dojo Cat’s Woman and anything by Fred Again.
1Rebel DIFC, Ground Floor, ICD Brookfield Place, DIFC, weekdays from 6.15am and weekends from 8.15am, firsttimers Dhs250 (first-three classes) or Dhs115 (per class); open gym-only Dhs105 or Dhs750 one month unlimited; all access Dhs1,000 (one month); other packages available. 1rebel.com/ae

Yerevan is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world and one that is filled with hidden wonders and treasures just waiting for you to explore.
There’s something truly special about Armenia. Whether you enjoy travelling for the rich history and culture, or green scenery and landscapes – you’re sure to find it here.
A few hours in Yerevan’s city centre is all you need to fall in love with it. There’s a lot that can be done in a day, so be sure to wake up early, grab breakfast and go discover the city.
Start out at the world-class sculpture garden in front of Cafesjian Center for the Arts. Spot a huge sculpture of Trdat – the chief architect of the Bagratid kings of Armenia, as well as the iconic pop art ‘LOVE’ by American artist Robert Indiana. Art-lovers need to allot time to spend inside the art centre but one masterpiece you don’t want to miss lies outdoors on what is most commonly known as The Cascade – the beating heart of the city with sweeping views of the Armenia cityscape. If you’re lucky, you may also be able to spot Mount Ararat on a clear day.
Visit one of the many cafés here before you set off on a tour. Be sure to pay a visit to Katoghike Holy Mother of God Church, one of the oldest churches in the city, and the Blue Mosque, the largest of eight mosques in Yerevan.
This city truly comes to life at night. This is the time to visit the dancing fountain
in front of the History Museum of Yerevan, complete with lights and music. Then, soak in the sights of Republic Square from the impressive stone buildings and enjoy the musicians roaming the streets.
From here, Yerevan offers plenty of places to stop and pick up some souvenirs, try traditional Armenian cuisine and its wonderful local wine.
Soak up nature and the panoramic views from up-high at Sevan National Park –one of the four protected national parks of Armenia that surrounds and protects Lake Sevan. Known as the ‘blue pearl’ or ‘blue eye of Armenia’ – Lake Sevan is the country’s national treasure. It is home to fresh water, providing fish to the region, and is vital to tourism and agriculture. Lake Sevan is also dotted with a number of impressive churches and monasteries, including the mustsee Sevanavank, known as ‘the Black Monastery’. Though simple in design, the monastery is one of the mostvisited sites in Armenia.
A two-hour drive away from Yerevan’s city centre is Haghartsin Monastery (meaning soaring eagle) located near the town of Dilijan in the Tavush Province of Armenia. It was built around the 10th century and comprises three different churches, a sepulchre, and a refectory. Due to storms, raids and decades of neglect, the complex was near ruins. However, when His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, visited Armenia in 2005, he generously offered to renovate the complex. After repairs, the monastery reopened to the public in 2013. Visit the monastery and see the exquisite stone carvings, the refectory hall showcasing medieval Armenian architecture, and the centuries-old khachkars (carved stone crosses).
Oenophiles will love Van Ardi – an award-winning boutique winery in the Aragatsotn region of Armenia. The charming family run boutique winery offers a unique experience with tours of the estate’s vineyards, the history of Armenian wine and of course, wine tasting. Spend two to three hours (or more) sampling wine with food pairing as you sit enjoying the views of the gorgeous vineyard and Mount Ararat with a specially built bell tower just metres away. The bell tower, which stands right in front of the vineyard is important as the family believes that the vibration and sound add positive energy to the ingredients that make up their fine wine. You will be able to ring the bell, too. vanardi.com

Armenian food is not only delicious, but also healthy. Here are some must-try dishes to look out for.
Brduch, which translates to ‘wrap’ in Armenia, is an essential all-purpose food, which you can treat yourself to for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It includes green vegetables, and cheese wrapped in lavash (unleavened bread).
Lahmajo [lah-mah-jo]
This Armenian-style pizza is a flatbread topped with minced meat.
Tolma [tol-mah]
A common Middle Eastern dish, this is a cabbage or grape leaf stuffed with minced meat and rice, which can be eaten either hot or cold.
Gata [gah-tah]
For a sweet treat, skip the cakes in Armenia and indulge in Gata – a traditional bread stuffed with sugar and butter.

If soft sandy beaches and snoozing under a palm tree sounds like your perfect escape, this is the place for you. Adrenaline junkies need not apply.
Sri Lanka is a foodie’s dream with so many hidden restaurants to discover behind every street. Animal lovers will also marvel at the wild elephants, and options for safari explorations. This friendly country is less about the extravagant luxe, although you can of course find that too, but more about going back to the roots, with natural flavours, untouched beaches and lush forests.
