EDITOR’S LETTER
AND JUST LIKE THAT…
EDITOR’S PICKS
We’ve somehow landed in the middle of 2025 – and yet, I can still recall what a turkey cost last December. Blink, and half the year’s gone. But it hasn’t disappeared quietly. The pace has been relentless, with new announcements, headline-stealing reveals, and milestone moments coming thick and fast.
Cast your mind back just 12 months, when What’s On dropped its landmark 45th anniversary issue. A bumper collector’s edition spanning Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Northern Emirates –packed with expert takes and insider picks. And while we’re not rolling out quite the same pomp this June, we’re still lighting 46 candles on the proverbial cake, and delivering another stacked issue with plenty to celebrate.
In this month’s cover story, we spotlight 46 things we love right now – a toast to what our team believes makes the UAE such a brilliant place to live, dine, and travel to. Flip deeper into this issue, and you’ll see how the UAE has successfully brought concepts from around the world to town – proof that you really can see the world without leaving the country.
If you caught last week’s headline about Disney’s arrival, you’ll know what we mean. Team What’s On was there as the news broke, and we’re still buzzing from it. It’s the kind of bold, future-facing move that defines the capital right now – ambitious, unexpected, and expertly executed. Dive into everything we know (so far) on page 54.
And speaking of Disney, a certain beloved mouse – (or was it the man behind him?) once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
Well, Abu Dhabi dreamt big. Now it’s doing even bigger.

THE BIG BRUNCH GLOW-UP
Introducing What’s On Brunch:
First stop – the craic starts at Ma Buckley’s
Clear your calendars, brunch fans – What’s On is flipping the script on your usual weekend routine. We’re thrilled to announce the launch of What’s On Brunch, a deliciously curated new series where we take over the capital’s tastiest spots, and guess what? You’re on the guest list.
We’re kicking things off in style on Saturday, June 28 from 1pm to 5pm at Ma Buckley’s Bar & Restaurant, an Irish soul with a cosmopolitan twist, nestled in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Think raucous laughter, and that unmistakable hum of a place where the craic is always mighty.
THE MENU:
Start with explosive dynamite shrimp, basil & mozzarella arancini, or go old-school with chicken satay or mushroom vol-au-vents. Then, saddle up for the main event, a legendary Irish Spice Bag, a Dublin late-night hero made brunch-ready. Crispy fries, juicy meat, peppers, onions, and McDonnells Curry Sauce (it’s the unofficial sauce of Irish glory). Not feeling the spice? Opt for the juicy smash burger, Buffalo chicken wrap, hearty fish ‘n’ chips, Asian beef salad, or loaded stir-fries. As for dessert, we’re sweet on lotus berry cheesecake, classic apple pie, and a perfectly torched crème brûlée.
THE VIBES:
We’re bringing in not one, but two top-tier troubadours: Dermot Taggart and Dale O’Hanlon, both armed with guitars, silky Irish vocals, and more charm than a pot of gold at the end of a very tipsy rainbow.
THE POUR:
Bottomless drinks come as standard. Whether draught devotees, wine fans, or spirits savants, the team at Ma Buckley’s will keep your glass filled and your spirits high. Guests are welcome to add signature cocktails into the mix for just Dhs50.
THE DAMAGE:
All this for just Dhs129 per person. Bargain.
Spaces are limited, so book fast. Reserve now on mabuckley.com. For more information, call (0)2 642 8600 or follow @ma_buckleys

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
AHMAD ALMARRI
This month, we catch up with Ahmad Almarri, the founder of artisanal ice creamery Canvas Gelato (@canvas.gelato). For nearly a decade, Ahmad has been on a flavour-filled mission – crafting bold, imaginative scoops using real, high-quality ingredients. His creations range from the delightfully unexpected (goat cheese & figs, black sesame) to the deeply indulgent (beef tallow caramel with candied bacon) and the refreshingly zesty (pickled ginger, anyone?). Here, Ahmad shares his favourite spots in the UAE, from where to find the best burger to where he stocks up on beef for dinner parties.
@lento.ae; @alqbabh; @marmellatalove
I’m a fan of the Madinat Jumeirah properties. The beach is beautiful, and there’s something magical about walking through the winding paths and waterways. You’re in the middle of Dubai, but it feels like a resort tucked away in another world. jumeirah.com
It all depends on the mood, right? If I’m craving a great burger, like a really good, juicy, messy one, then it has to be LENTO. No question. For something more traditional, I head to Al Qbabh in Al Awir. It’s where I go for an all-out Emirati seafood feast, the kind that makes you want to take a nap after. And twice a month, without fail, I drive to Abu Dhabi for Marmellata. Their pizza is just that good. I genuinely think it’s the best pizza in the region. Totally worth the drive.
For footwear, it’s Tamashee. Their sandals are beautifully made, and they’ve got that perfect blend of tradition and modern design. It’s hard to find that kind of quality anymore. For meat, I always go to Carnistore, especially if I’m hosting dinner. They’ve got great cuts, and the service is super reliable. @tamashee; @carnistore
A lot of people haven’t heard of the Women’s Museum in Al Ras, Deira, but it’s such a gem. Tucked away in the older part of the city, it tells an important story and gives you a real sense of history and culture. Another spot I love is the Arabian Desert Camel Riding Centre out in Al Marmoom. It’s one of those only-in-the-UAE experiences, and they really take care of the animals. womensmuseumuae.com; @adcrc.me
Mirzam Chocolate is a multi-sensory experience. The coffee is great, the chocolate is even better, and the light streaming through the windows while you look out at the mosque? Magic. Then there’s To the Moon and Back, which feels like Dubai’s answer to Central Perk. I don’t know what it is, but I always bump into someone I know there. It’s got that neighbourhood café vibe, which is rare in this city. If I’m in Abu Dhabi, my go-to is Local at Al Zeina. Super chilled, good coffee, great people. @mirzamchocolate; @ttmb.coffee; @_localuae_
46 wonderful reasons we LOVE the UAE (and you should too)

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The convenience, everything is at your fingertips in the UAE. Need groceries delivered to your door? They’ll be there in 5 minutes with everything you need. Taxis are aplenty. There’s every cuisine you can think of.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
I get this question so often and I never know what to say as we are truly spoiled with choice. I’m going to go with CÉ LA VI, it’s a Dubai favourite for a reason. The location is stunning, food is amazing and service, always incredible.
@celavidubai
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Out in the middle of the desert, grab some snacks to pick on, hop in a 4x4 and head for the sand. You can’t get more UAE than that.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Cocktails with the girlies on Friday evening at a restaurant with a beautiful view, like ATTIKO, then a chilled pool day on Saturday at La Cantine Beach as I’m too old for these wild party ones now. On Sunday, breakfast at Brunch and Cake is always my favourite choice and then a trip
to Dubai Islands’ dog-friendly beach for some walkies with my husband and our fur baby.
Browse around Ripe Market. This is one of my favourite activities to do. Aimlessly wandering through each stall, chatting to the business owners and treating myself to a handmade piece of jewellery.
@ripemarket
MY FAVOURITE PLACE
TO RELAX IS…
On a staycation. The Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is possibly my
hotel ever. It’s located in the middle of the desert, surrounded by dunes where there is pure peace and quiet. The hotel is really luxurious too with staff that couldn’t be more welcoming and helpful. @anantaraqasralsarab
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
There is a pre-loved designer store in Town Centre Mall in Jumeirah called The Closet and it has so many amazing designers for decent prices. They sell bags, shoes, jewellery and more, and most of the bits don’t even have one tiny mark on

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
That if you like travelling, the country’s geographical placement is ideal. If you’re not here for globe-trotting, no big deal – the world is served to you on a silver platter in the UAE – sights, sounds, smells, flavours, cultures, people – all of it.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
It’s impossible to have a “best” or “favourite” when you’re in this line of work – there are way too many. But if there’s one restaurant you have to try, it’s La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi.
@lpmabudhabi
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Old Dubai. Al Bastakiya, Al Seef, Al Fahidi, or Shindagha. Take your time wandering around the souk and getting lost by the creek. You’ll get a feel of what things were like before this city went into overdrive with respect to its futuristic ambitions. Wonderful photo ops, too. @alseefdubai
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
By being active. The UAE is a great place to be active (use indoor facilities during peak summer). Not a gym rat? Climb a rock wall. Get in the water. Go for a hike or ride a bike. It’s very stimulating, great for the body and mind, and recharges you like mindless scrolling never can.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Dream, with my eyes wide open – because the UAE lets you do that. It gives you so much food for thought, with change happening right in front of your eyes. And that makes you reflect on the potential of infinite possibilities. I like people and places that talk about making things happen – and the UAE is it.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Driving on the roads of the UAE. You done laughing? Now pick a time when it’s not rush hour, and a route that leads you to the mountains or to the sprawling dunes, rather than to glass skyscrapers. Early mornings and late nights are the best. Move over to the cruise lane, don’t quality-test the speed radars, and let that playlist rip. playlist

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
Living with people from around the world in harmony. We read about it being a country that has a reputation for tolerance and religious coexistence, and the firsthand experience is just wonderful and heart-warming.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Golden Dragon in Oud Metha. It is close to five decades old, meaning it was around when Dubai was taking its baby steps towards becoming the global icon it is now known as. Today, its menu leans towards Cantonese, Thai, and Sichuan dishes. And everything is oh-so-good. Try the dim sum basket, dragon chicken, honey chili fish and Kolkata Chinese bhel. @goldendragonme
AARTI SAUNDALKAR
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Al Ain! This humble city in Abu Dhabi is often overlooked, but it’s an ancient oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of my favourite places in the UAE. It is one of the oldest inhabited spots in the world and its history runs deep. Don’t miss Hili Archaeological Park, Jebel Hafeet Tombs and Al Ain Oasis.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
I am a homebody, so I love staying at home. You can catch me doing research for my future trips, building LEGO, doing some online shopping, or reading about art history while Netflix goes on in the background.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Fujairah… away from the city skylines and noise. I love its mountain views on one side, and endless blue ocean on the other. While I am not a beach person, I can sit on a lounge chair and just feel my stress melting away. No expensive spa treatment needed.
@discoverfujairah
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
The filter coffee (and the rest of the menu) from Woodlands in Karama. Nothing hits the spot more than the coffee from this no-frills restaurant. No matter how stuffed you are after your meal, do not leave without sipping the filter coffee. You will most likely order a second, or just take one home with you.

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The safety, by far. The city gives me the independence and freedom to be the most authentic version of myself. Here, I can explore every corner on my own, without fear or apprehension, reinvent myself as I please, hop on and off the metro whenever and create opportunities for myself. Being a woman never felt so rewarding.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Go on a late-night drive, preferably on a weekend, get a snack and a cup of a karak, and spend the time yapping away. It’s such a great, low-cost, low-commitment way to socialise, and the healing powers of a great cup of karak after a long week are unmatched. This is a prime Dubai experience – you need to try it at least once.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX
IS…
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Kinoya is a firm hit with my household; this the one spot both my husband and I enjoy in equal measure – he’s hard to please, impressed by little, but Kinoya has stayed with us from our days being engaged. It’s hearty, wholesome and comforting – what’s not to like? @kinoya.ae
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Walk the streets of Karama, and the childhood of many comes alive. The area around Burjuman extending into Bur Dubai is a concentrate of street food, rows of amazing, cheap dining, old bookstores and so much welcoming energy. Many of us Dubai folk will relate – we spent our teenage here, getting ice cream in Burjuman and shawarma at the corner shop, celebrating festivals and going on late night drives. Peak nostalgia.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Kite Beach. Winter. Darkness. It’s the best combination. What’s even better is when you put a mat down and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. Kite Beach is one of the few free beaches left in Dubai. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a quiet stretch to claim as your own.
@kitebeachdubai
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
Every time my mother and I go to our tailor in Meena Bazaar, which is too often, we eat at this little neighbourhood Pakistani restaurant – Shehar Karachi –serving up spicy, lip-smacking kadhais and greasy pulaos with fresh, steaming naan. Everything is packed with flavour, easy and cheap – it’s technically comfort food but the food court version. The space is basically bare bones, rudimentary and a little rough at the edges, but filled with charm, from the hospitality of the servers to the warmth of the owner sat by the door. Now, this is an honest operation. Tel: (0)54 553 9820
Sleep in, doll-up, hit the town. After working hard all week, the weekend is when I catch up on sleep, and I’m such a night owl, the nighttime is when I like to venture out. Relax during the day, catch some friends at a dinner in Jumeirah, City Walk or Downtown and then spend the rest of the night at a shisha café.

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
For me, the UAE feels like the land of firsts. The possibilities here are unlike anywhere else I’ve lived. With the right mindset, energy, and effort, anything is achievable. If you’re clear about what you want, this place has a way of turning your goals into reality. It’s a country that rewards vision and action.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
@kirarestaurant
Right now, it’s Kira. I’ve only been once since it opened, but I’ve been obsessed ever since. There’s just something about it – the gold accents give it that glam feel, but it’s also calm and quietly elegant. The dishes I tried were absolutely delicious. Kira gets it right on both fronts: beautiful setting and seriously good food. It’s gold –literally and figuratively – and easily one of the most stunning venues I’ve visited. And with food this good, it’s far more than just a pretty face.
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
The Dubai Gold Souk. My mum and I always go whenever she visits – it’s our little ritual, and we both love gold. It’s as authentic as it gets: the buzzing bazaar vibe, the sparkle everywhere, and that old-school charm that transports you back in time.
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Doing what Dubai does best: beach and pool days, followed by dining out (always). My ideal weekend starts with a good morning workout, then some time by the water, and later getting dressed up for dinner and drinks with my favourite people. And if I can fit in a spa day? Even better. Self-care here is on another level — nothing beats a little me-time to reset.
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Watching the sunset – pretty much anywhere. The way the sky transforms into a canvas of soft hues always gives me a moment to pause, reset, and take in that quiet beauty that feels like it’s welcoming the energy of tomorrow. It never fails to leave me feeling inspired.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
Definitely the spa. I recently visited the Banyan Tree Spa and I’m obsessed. But honestly, any spa that gets it right – from the treatments and the service to the peace, the views, and that sense of quiet luxury – is my happy place. It’s where I fully switch off and recharge.

Honestly, it’s how outrageously easy life is. Need petrol?
Cafu rolls up. Laundry piling up? Washmen to the rescue. Unexpected midweek drinks turned into a wild night?

THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Kokoro in Alserkal Avenue is my current lunchtime obsession in Dubai. It’s fast, fresh, and hits the spot every single time. I perch at the counter, devour spicy tuna handrolls like they’re going out of style, and watch sushi wizards roll, slice, and plate like edible theatre. @kokoro.dxb
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
Al Ijaza Cafeteria in Jumeirah 1. No frills, no fuss – just decades of loyal locals, chaotic curbside orders, and honest food. Pull up, give a quick beep, and out comes a Hassan Mattar sandwich: chicken, fries, mayo, cheese, hot sauce – all perfectly wrong yet absolutely right. Wash it down with a neon-bright fruit juice. Open since 1990, it’s a cultural fixture for many, a real gem that never changes. @aliljazacafe
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
Start strong with a workout. My go-to is 1Rebel in ICD Brookfield Place, followed by coffee chats with the girls. Then it’s off to a long, lazy lunch somewhere fun like Chez Wam or Bungalo34 – sunshine, good food, and even better company. Bed by 9, of course. It’s giving nearly-40 energy, Dubai-style: social but balanced. @1rebel_uae, @chezwamdubai, @bungalo34
THE THING I LOVE TO DO MOST IS…
Scouting out new restaurants. The UAE’s food scene is a constantly evolving playground, with every flavour and concept imaginable. From small, long-standing Pakistani spots that have survived decades, to experimental eateries,
MY
food halls, and celebrity-driven kitchens, there’s always something unexpected around the corner. It’s a mix of global influences and local flair, all packed into one country, and I’m always excited to see what the next bite might bring.
FAVOURITE
PLACE TO RELAX IS…
There’s this quiet gem in Al Quoz called Longevity Hub – a sort of no-nonsense wellness spot focused on cold plunges and saunas. I won’t pretend I love the ice bath – it’s 15 minutes (humble brag) of existential crisis – but the high afterwards is unmatched. Muscles unlock, my brain exhales, and I walk out feeling strangely invincible. What I love most is the vibe –clean, calm, and refreshingly unfussy. No zen waterfalls or whispering staff, just a nice place that lets you reset in peace. @longevity.wellness.hub
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
With its chic Californian Palm Springs vibes, Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha in Abu Dhabi offers everything from terracotta-framed padel courts surrounded by greenery to a stunning infinity pool with views of the Arabian Gulf. Between the wellness-focused amenities and serene spaces, it’s the ultimate place to unwind, feel fancy and miles away from anyone else. @matchaalbateen

THE BEST BIT ABOUT LIVING IN THE UAE IS…
The way every weekend feels like a holiday. From early morning beach walks to afternoon brunches and leisurely pool days – I’ve been living here for a decade and I still sometimes can’t believe how blissful it feels to be here.
THE RESTAURANT I LOVE THE MOST IS…
Sucre. This is a seriously underrated DIFC gem. Start with drinks at sister bar Alma, where crimson shades and master mixology create a sultry environment for early evenings. Then head next door to Sucre, where foodie highlights include padron peppers, perfectly cooked steaks, and the best dessert in the city – the dulce de leche fondant.
@sucredubai
THE BEST PLACE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL UAE IS…
The waterfront market. Go for sunrise and see the local fishermen bringing in their
fresh catches, and shop over 500 vendors selling everything from seafood to fruit and vegetables, dry goods, and meat and poultry. Stick around for lunch and have the one of the on-site restaurants cook what you buy.
@wfm.uae
THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND IS…
With after-work drinks on a Friday. For the nostalgic British pub vibe (and convenience to my apartment in The Greens), garden on 8 is my go-to. From there, Saturday and Sunday typically revolve around quintessential UAE experiences – pool days, brunches, seeing friends. Tagomago is one of my favourite weekend spots, but since the opening of J1
Beach, I love to glam up and go to Sirene or Gitano.
Explore! Be it a new restaurant or beach club that’s opened in the beating heart of Dubai, a hiking route in Khorfakkan worth a 5am start for, or a pretty café on the beach in Abu Dhabi. Another wonderful thing about UAE living – there’s always so much new stuff to do.
MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX IS…
With some full-scale pampering. For a pinky-nude manicure my favourite place to go is We Nails, while Ellis at JVC’s Bali-inspired SOTA salon is my go-to for all things haircare. I’ve also recently found sound healing really helps me switch off, the Beyond Wellness sessions are utterly brilliant.
@wenailsdubai, @sotasalon, @beyondwellnessdxb
MY FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IS…
Emirates Bio Farm is a great place to go to escape the city. They’ve been growing fresh fruit and veggies since 2016, but it’s evolved into so much more than that – with farm visits, tractor tours, animal feeding and barrel rides through the fields that add to the wholesome feel.

Skip the airport chaos, ditch the jet lag, and stay local while globetrotting vicariously. We’ve mapped out a world tour without leaving the UAE – with stops in Peru, Greece, South Africa and beyond. From steakhouse speakeasies to Polynesian pool days, here’s where to go around the globe – all within driving distance.
CHICAGO, USA: The Butcher & Still, Four Seasons Abu Dhabi
A Chicago steakhouse in Abu Dhabi? That’s exactly what The Butcher & Still delivers – but with the finesse you’d expect from the Four Seasons. As you descend into this Prohibition-era venue, the transformation is instant with a roaring Twenties soundtrack that would make Al Capone nod in approval.
The menu is pure Windy City energy – dry-aged beef, Kansas City strip loins, and a wedge salad you’ll need two hands to tackle. What really makes the place sing, though, is The Hideaway – a secret underground dining room accessible via a private elevator that feels like you’re entering a gangster’s vault. Dimly lit, richly detailed, and effortlessly cool, it’s a dining experience that plays the nostalgia card hard – and wins. Dress sharp, order a Manhattan, and let the immersive magic do the rest. @butcherandstill
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA: Flamingo Room by tashas, Dubai
COYA is what happens when Peruvian soul food, high-end hospitality, and serious swagger have a love child. This Abu Dhabi outpost of the global COYA brand is one of the city’s most vibrant destinations. And it’s got the awards to prove it.
As soon as you enter, it’s a Latin American explosion – colour, sound, spice. The menu includes ceviches, charred anticuchos, perfectly grilled meats, and cocktails that balance fire and flair (hello, pisco sour). Artworks line the walls, live DJ sets pulse through the evenings, and there’s a bar culture here that deserves its own passport. They even have their own playlist – just try not to Shazam everything between bites.
It’s the kind of place you start with dinner and end with dancing, all while feeling like you’ve stumbled into a chic Lima lounge party. If you can’t fly to South America, this might be the next best thing.
@coyaabudhabi
Flamingo Room doesn’t whisper luxury – it roars it. Located at Jumeirah Al Naseem, it’s the ultimate ode to African elegance with just the right splash of maximalism. From the oversized animal sculptures to the pink velvet chairs and the gold-leaf finishes, the space is meticulously curated – every surface has a story, every detail a wink to the wild.
The menu blends global chic with South African roots. Think king crab tagliatelle, burrata with heirloom tomatoes, and seriously good cocktails that come dressed to impress. And then there’s Collective Africa, the in-house concept store that offers everything from curated fashion to décor pieces that make a statement. Come for the Instagram shots, stay for the details, and leave with a shopping bag full of ‘souvenirs’. @flamingoroomae

BANGKOK, THAILAND: Dusit
Thani Abu Dhabi
A grand hotel with Thai soul, Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi delivers a staycation with depth – and a whole lot of décor. From the moment you arrive, a wave of calm rolls over you: orchids everywhere, soothing music, and a signature scent wafting through the lobby that could make even your most stressful day melt away.
Rooms are plush, spacious, and drenched in Thai design, but the real reason to visit is Benjarong – their fine-dining Thai restaurant that’s a favourite with in-the-know locals. Expect intricately presented dishes, ingredients flown in from Bangkok, and service that feels like a gentle art form. You’ll also want to carve out time for the Namm Spa, which pairs Thai wellness traditions with modern treatments (don’t skip the Thai herbal compress massage or the Hammam). It’s a tranquil temple to Thai hospitality – no jet lag, just jasmine tea and good vibes. @dusitthaniabudhabi
PROVENCE,
NEW YORK, USA: Broadway Brasserie & Bar, Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental
What if Manhattan’s theatre district met Middle Eastern opulence? That’s exactly the mash-up on offer at Broadway Brasserie & Bar, the glittering, jazz-hands-worthy venue inside the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. From exposed brick and dramatic lighting to actual stage performances in the private dining theatre, it’s a place where your dinner comes with a spotlight.
The menu fuses classic American and European brasserie favourites, from seared scallops and short ribs to truffled mac and cheese. It’s comfort food – but make it couture. The bar plays with cocktail classics (with a Broadway twist, of course), and live entertainment fills the air with Broadway bops and classy cabaret.
Whether you’re here for a romantic date, a night out, or just to feel a little fabulous, the energy is infectious. Dress up, grab a cocktail called “The Curtain Call,” and prepare to be entertained from appetiser to encore. @broadway.uae
FRANCE: French Village, Riverland Dubai
Tucked inside Riverland Dubai is a whimsical pocket of France that looks like it’s been lifted straight out of a storybook. The French Village is designed to mirror 16thcentury Dijon – cobblestone paths, crooked alleyways, rustic stone buildings and all.
There’s a river running through it, and the entire area is peppered with charming cafes, street performers, boutique shops, and accordion music that feels straight out of a Parisian rom-com. It’s ridiculously photogenic, especially during golden hour, and perfect for a slow meander, or a cheese platter.
On cooler nights, the whole place comes alive with live acts, markets, and even themed festivals. It’s charming, theatrical, and delightfully French – minus the airport queues and exchange rates. It’s basically Provence with parking. @riverlanddubai
SANTORINI, GREECE: Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat
Think you need a Schengen visa for a Greek island fix? Think again. Less than an hour outside Abu Dhabi, off Exit 399, sits one of the most jaw-dropping resort properties in the country: Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat. With its blinding white architecture, infinity pools, and Aegean-style serenity, it’s the Greek escape you didn’t know was a road trip away. This boutique, adults-only haven has just 22 rooms, each one designed with minimalistic luxury and beachfacing tranquility. Many suites open directly onto the sand, giving you that barefoot-luxury vibe with Arabian Gulf views. The restaurants, Oia and Thalassa, serve Mediterranean fine dining with a UAE twist, while the Anantara Spa offers everything from Thai massages to Greek olive oil facials. Time slows down, emails can wait, and sunset comes with a side of serenity. Bucket list-worthy? 100 per cent. @anantarasantorini
POLYNESIA: Lapita, Dubai Parks and Resorts
You may not know where Polynesia is on a map, but you’ll know when you’ve arrived at Lapita. Tucked inside Dubai Parks and Resorts, this Autograph Collection hotel is a full-on tropical reverie, inspired by the lush landscapes and warm cultures of the South Pacific. The architecture is a dreamy blend of bamboo, carved wood, and lava stone, and the hotel layout flows like a tropical village – all gardens, bridges, and little pockets of paradise. Whether you’re lazing by the pool under fronded umbrellas, hopping on a golf cart to explore, or unwinding at Ari Spa, every detail feels like a postcard from Bora Bora.
The restaurants, Kalea and Hikina, embrace the flavours of the islands with fresh seafood, coconut-based curries, and exotic desserts that make every meal feel like a celebration. Come for the escapism, stay for the hospitality – and pack a floral shirt. @lapitahoteldubai
GIZA, EGYPT: Wafi City, Dubai
You can’t miss Wafi City – literally. The pyramid-shaped structure looms over the Al Jadaf area of Dubai like a beacon of ancient Egyptian grandeur, complete with towering obelisks, temple-style facades, and wall carvings that pay homage to the dynasties of old. Inside, Wafi City is a bustling hybrid of shopping centre, hospitality hub, and cultural playground. From fashion boutiques and Egyptian-themed restaurants to the recently revamped Wafi Gourmet, there’s something here for every pharaoh wannabe. There’s even a spa offering ancient Egyptianinspired treatments, because why shouldn’t you feel like Cleopatra on a Tuesday?
@waficitydubai
BARCELONA, SPAIN: José by Pizarro, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers
Tucked away in Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, José by Pizarro is the first UAE venture by acclaimed Spanish chef José Pizarro, and it’s exactly what you’d hope a tapas bar in the UAE would be: vibrant and full of flavour. Think juicy spicy chicken croquetas, crispy prawn fritters, perfectly blistered padrón peppers, and a potato tortilla that might just ruin you for all others. Plates are made for sharing (but good luck actually doing that), and the wine list is an ode to Spain’s rich viniculture. There’s also a killer sangria that makes you want to spend the rest of the evening plotting your next Spanish holiday. @josebypizarro
LET’S GET TOGETHER
12 awesome activities to do with your friends
WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN
It’s easy to fall into a social rut – same places, same plans, same food every weekend. But maybe it’s time to shake things up and challenge yourself (and your mates) to level up your social game. Sure, they might resist at first – people love their comfort zones, but trust us, once you push them off that (possibly literal) cliff, they’ll be thanking you. Maybe even buying you gifts. Or, more realistically, saying something like, “OK, I thought that would suck... but it was actually awesome.”
So, if you’re ready to swap the usual for the unforgettable, here are 12 epic group activities to seriously step things up.
NEXT-LEVEL YOUR BOAT PARTY
1
Obviously boat parties are awesome, but Best Marine Escapes takes things up a notch with your own pontoon party. Think of it as your very own floating island just off the stunning Abu Dhabi coastline. In fact, it’s basically a private beach club on the sea – perfect for soaking up the sun, or just chilling with a paddleboard, floats and enjoying the good times. And we’re not talking basic here, either. The pontoon comes fully kitted out with its own toilet, a crew of servers, a buffet and barbecue to keep everyone fuelled, and shaded lounging areas with bean bags, chairs, and tables. Perfect for throwing a big bash for a hoard of your mates or just vibing with a smaller crew, this floating paradise brings luxury, nature, and nonstop fun together in one unforgettable day. bestmarineescape.ae
SHOOT LASERS AT YOUR FRIENDS
2
Sharjah’s laser tag at Prison Island is a high-energy, glow-in-the-dark showdown where up to 24 players can battle it out in a futuristic arena. Whether you’re teaming up or going solo in a chaotic free-forall, every game is a 15-minute burst of strategy, speed, and friendly fire. Players suit up with laser vests and blasters, racking up points by hitting targets on opponents’ gear. With options to play one, two, or three rounds, it’s the perfect way to turn a regular day out into a full-blown laser warzone. Just make sure your friends are ready to get zapped.

FLIP, FLOP AND SOAR THROUGH THE AIR
3
Skydiving is cool, but actually jumping out of a plane sounds absolutely terrifying. To get the same feel without the weeks of apprehensive sweats beforehand, opt for an adventure at Abu Dhabi’s indoor skydiving facility at CLYMB, where instructors will teach you how to fly with your body and flip through the air with the help of a self-contained vertical wind tunnel. It’s pretty kickass, even if you did cry the first time you couldn’t stop flipping.
@clymbyasisland
JUMP HIGH AT AN INDOOR TRAMPOLINE PARK
You know what’s great? Trampolines. You know what’s even more great? A trampoline park with foam pits. And you know what’s the greatest thing ever? You in a trampoline park with foam pits attempting backflips with your best friends. Bounce Abu Dhabi, located in Marina Mall and Khalifa City, comes complete with trampolines, foam pits, and trampoline basketball and dodgeball. @bounce.ae
RACE UP REALLY TALL WALLS
After seeing 127 hours, rock climbing in the real world became a lot less appealing. But strapping on a harness to scale a rock wall is totally doable. CLYMB boasts the region’s tallest climbing wall, coming in at 138 feet. If you’re not up for the challenge, the facility also offers indoor boulders for beginner climbers. Either way, you’re going to be working up a sweat. So, rest assured knowing that you have the option to end your day hitting up the mall restaurants just next door.
@clymbyasisland
ESCAPE THE ROOM
Is there a better way of bringing people together than trapping them in a room and forcing them to find a way out? Yes, but it’s a lot less entertaining. Abu Dhabi’s Blackout realistic horror escape games will transport you to another world where you’re forced to team up and race against the clock. With terrifying themes like Sinister, Exorcism, Paranormal, Psychiatric and Dungeon, you and your friends will be set, and shook, for a while. @blackoutbycave
GO TO AN ACTUALLY FUN ART MUSEUM
If you’re after an art experience that’s way beyond staring at paintings on a wall, then Phenomena on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island could be just the ticket. Wander through a giant, cloud-like building where art reacts to you. Touch a pool of water, and digital mosaics ripple out just for you. The whole space feels alive, with artworks that change based on humidity, light, and even how you move. It’s 17,000 square metres of digital magic, from waterfalls pouring down glowing columns to installations that literally wouldn’t exist outside this museum. No guides, no maps, just you and your crew getting lost in the moment. It’s trippy and completely immersive, like a futuristic playground for the senses.
@teamlab_phenomena
RIDE WAVES WITH YOUR MATES (BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE)
If you’re dreaming of the ultimate surf trip with your crew, minus the jet lag and jellyfish, Surf Abu Dhabi is calling. This impressive complex is a full-blown surf paradise built with the same tech as Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in the US, only bigger, saltier, and way more luxe. We’re talking perfect, ocean-like waves in the world’s longest surf lagoon, tailored sessions for every level (yes, even if you’re still figuring out which foot goes forward), and the option to book a 90-minute private surf session for you and five mates. When you’re not riding barrels, kick back in your own cabana or soak up the sun on a luxe lounger while world-class bars and restaurants keep the vibes flowing. Every group of friends has that one knowit-all, armed with endless random facts that are usually more impressive than useful. Well, finally, there’s a place where that brainpower can be put to good use: the weekly pub quiz at McCafferty’s on Yas Bay. Held every Monday and hosted by radio presenter Lorna Bancroft, this quiz night is your crew’s time to shine. Team registration kicks off at 7pm, with the quiz starting at 8pm. It’s interactive, competitive, and way more fun than just shouting answers at the TV during game shows. Plus, there are prizes like lunch and brunch tokens up for grabs. You can even pair your brainy banter with McCafferty’s steak dinner and drink offer, starting at just Dhs129.

BLOW OFF STEAM IN A RAGE CAGE
“Smashing stress in a fun space.” That’s the tagline of Smash Room Abu Dhabi, the ultimate group activity if you and your mates need to let off some serious steam. Suit up in full safety gear (helmet, gloves, eye protection), grab a crowbar or a bat, and start smashing everything from old TVs and laptops to glassware and printers. It’s loud, messy, and ridiculously satisfying. REVIEW:
BARBASSI
The mid-day break you’ve been dreaming of…
From the minds behind the capital’s favourite pizza, Marmellata, Barbassi is a canteen-style eatery that’s made its place in a subtle corner of Mina Zayed’s creative Madar39 neighbourhood. This sandwich-focused cafeteria arrives at M39 with all the warmth and flavour-packed flair we’ve come to expect from the Dagstanis and their crew. We’re told Barbassi refers to an Italian herb, but this particular snack bar is named after owner Raj’s son – Sebastian “Bassi” Dagstani.
Whether you’re grabbing a sandwich between meetings or catching up over a coffee, this restaurant delivers, and delivers well – with speed, quality, and of course, taste, serving up a winning trifecta.
Barbassi is cosy, warm, and welcoming. With long, wooden counters, a strategic splattering of wallpaper, homely hues and minimalistic design, it’s really only enough
room to slip in, make your order, exchange pleasantries, and sit down for a quick bite before you’re back to the hustle. But it’s in those few minutes that you’ll notice the quiet elements of their design. In true creative neighbourhood fashion, there’s also a small corner that has Barbassithemed merch up for sale – crew neck shirts, baseball hats – much like the clothing the crew themselves wear.
The menu is a clear extension of Marmellata’s ethos: simple, honest food using highquality, ethicallysourced ingredients. You’ll find familiar favourites like truffle honey, salami, roast beef, and pickled veggies making delicious reappearances, but tucked into fluffy focaccia sandwiches this time around. For only Dhs25, the olive, tomato, and oregano focaccia is a standout, as is the lemon, olive and thyme – both humble, but packed with flavour.
If you’re feeling hungrier, their Dhs45 focaccia sandwiches pack a bigger punch. Options such as the melted ham and cheese with veal rump and mustard pickle are indulgent and satisfying, while the roasted mushroom focaccia with truffle labneh is a meat-free masterpiece. Yes, they agree a mid-day pick-me-up would be incomplete without its selection of coffees, so make sure to grab a cuppa Joe – capuccinos, lattes, they pour it all. And if a sugary supercharge is what you need, the Hein’s orange and almond cake at Dhs20 is what you need. Wash it all down with the Fountain of Youth, that you just might spot behind the counter as you’re placing your order.
It’s become a bit of a custom for the What’s On Abu Dhabi crew to get the chef to sign a copy of the menu, when we visit a great new spot for the first time. Respect, gratitude, one for the memoirs. In his signature style, Raj shrugs it off and reluctantly accepts our Sharpie, before signing La Carte with a “Thank you – always, always, always”. Big surprise.
Barbassi, M39, Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi, Thur to Sun 11am to 2pm. @barbassiboom

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:
CHEF’S BRUNCH
AT GIORNOTTE
Unpacking an award-winning dine-around at the Ritz…
This month, What’s On makes the drive to the Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal on a Saturday afternoon when the golden rays are beating down on us. But will their in-house eat, Giornotte’s famed Chef’s Brunch make it all worth it? Keep reading to find out.
FOOD AND DRINK
Giornotte may be billed as a “signature Mediterranean restaurant,” but that barely scratches the surface. The Chef’s Brunch is less a regional showcase and more an edible world tour. Frankly, we gave up trying to categorise it and settled on: “Abu Dhabi’s ideal Saturday dine-around.”
Giornotte’s Chef’s Brunch proves that quantity and quality can get along just fine. EAT
to admire the grandeur of this sun-bathed, high-luxury property while you’re creating your own bespoke cheese-and-meat platter. Key players from the hotel’s F&B team are in attendance, ensuring guests are having the optimum brunch experience.
we did get was a roll call of decadence – shucked oysters, sushi, dim sum, foie gras, caviar, Indian curries, margherita slices, wedges of brie, grilled sea bass, and shrimps the size of espresso cups. It was smart to skip breakfast for all of this.
Three plates in (each), and we’re still convinced we missed half of it. But what
The bar is equally overachieving. A team of mixologists (and what feels like their support staff) craft a rainbow of cocktails – from classics to curveballs like the Tokyo Mule. Mocktails get just as much love, bursting with citrus, passionfruit, and pure summertime.
VIBE CHECK
The open-plan layout is a savvy move – you’ll want clear paths when you inevitably double back to that carving station. Their buffet counters are lined up neatly both inside the dining room as well as across the main hall outside, so you get
THE CROWD
At the truffle risotto station, we struck up conversations with Dubai day-trippers, inhouse hotel guests, business travellers, and a few post-swim brunchers still towelling off from the Ritz’s pool. It’s a crowd as eclectic as the menu.
The buzz is palpable – its popularity underscored by a row of What’s On award plaques proudly displayed at the entrance. As we scoop up our final bite of date jam and crackers, we’re already plotting our return.
Giornotte, RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal, Rawdah, Abu Dhabi, Saturdays 1pm to 4pm, Dhs399 soft, Dhs499 house, Dhs699 bubbles. @giornotte

WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER
When it comes to fried bird, this city knows how to shake its tail feather.
Tuck your napkin into your shirt, and savour our picks for the best fried chicken across Abu Dhabi
CRAFT by Side Hustle
If you live in Abu Dhabi, we’re sure you know of Chey Troy Payne by now. He’s the proud head chef at the country’s one and only brewery – and arguably one of the boldest kitchens in the Middle East. While Craft is known for its small-batch brews inspired by Czech, German, British, American, and Belgian classics, it’s Chef Troy’s smoked fried chicken that has us fully hooked. Smoked fried to perfection in a fragrant house-made rub, it’s served up with crunchy house pickles and your choice of sauce. Go big with a whole bird (Dhs110), or keep it tight with a half (Dhs55) or quarter (Dhs35). And if Southern soul food is your thing, the rest of the menu delivers heavy hitters like Cajun po’boys, Jambalaya, shrimp and grits, and dry-aged brisket – all crafted from scratch with top-shelf ingredients. KEW’s
Kew’s has shaken up the local dining scene with something Abu Dhabi’s never seen before: the region’s first tallow-fried chicken restaurant. Located next to Sticky Rice’s Yas Mall spot, Kew’s takes things up a notch by frying its chicken in premium beef tallow – sourced straight from Thailand –delivering a crispy, golden exterior and a depth of flavour that’s tough to beat. The co-founder behind Sticky Rice, known for its craveworthy Thai dishes, has crafted this one-of-a-kind concept where no other restaurant in the region dares to cook like this. The menu’s highlights include a chicken sandwich on soft Hokkaido milk bread, crispy tallow fries, and signature chicken with coatings like sticky tamarind, kong kang, and Thai BBQ. Pair that with sides like sour mango slaw, Hainanese rice, and a coconut milk shake to round out your deep-fried experience.
Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi, @kewsfriedchicken
Raising Cane’s
We’d like to think most Abu Dhabians have absolutely no qualms admitting an import knows what it’s doing, as evidenced by the local love given to this Louisiana-born poultry sensation. Raising Cane’s landed in the capital back in 2018 at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, and it’s been setting the bar for fried chicken ever since. Known for doing one thing and doing it ridiculously well, the fast-casual joint serves up chicken fingers that are brined for 24 hours, never frozen, and fried to golden, juicy perfection. Throw in crinkle-cut fries, buttery toast, and that iconic Cane’s Sauce, and you’ve got yourself a no-fuss, all-flavour fried chicken fix.
The Galleria Al Maryah Island. Tel: (0)2 492 6862. @raisingcanesme
Korean Kitchen
Long before Buffalo put wings on the map, Korean kitchens were already perfecting the art, turning out super-crispy, flavour-packed chicken seasoned with a signature blend of spices, chilis, and sugars. Get a taste of the tradition at Korean Kitchen, just off the Corniche in the Najda area. They claim to use only 100 per cent fresh, never-frozen chicken, and all boneless thighs. While Pickl is known for its delicious smash burgers, we urge you to shift your attention to the real star: the fried chicken sando. This much-loved UAE-based restaurant chain serves fresh, hand-breaded chicken breast, tossed and fried to order. Go for the multiaward-winning OG Chicken Sando, juicy fried chicken, dill pickles, crisp lettuce, their signature comeback sauce, all nestled in a soft potato bun. If you like to live on the wild side, give the Reaper spice level a go and come back to us with a report on how your taste buds are doing.

Black Tap
When it comes to crave-worthy bar food, few places deliver quite like Black Tap. A true stalwart in the scene, this burger-andmilkshake powerhouse also knows its way around a fryer – especially when it comes to their finger-licking fried wings. We’re especially partial to the Korean BBQ Tenders (Dhs 42): juicy, crispy chicken smothered in a sweet and spicy BBQ sauce, topped with spring onions, sesame seeds, and a zing of lime. Served with house buttermilk dressing on the side.

Jollibee
Forty years ago, Filipino businessman Tony Tan Caktiong built a global fast-food phenomenon, and sparked one of the most loyal cult followings in the industry. Today, Jollibee is beloved across North America, Asia, and Europe – from Los Angeles to Milan, Macau to the UAE – where fans line up for heaping buckets of crispy fried chicken. At the heart of it all is Chicken Joy – golden, crunchy, and absurdly juicy fried chicken that rivals any of the big names. It’s a Filipino staple, served with gravy and joy, and led by none other than the brand’s iconic, dancing bee in a tuxedo jacket. What’s not to love?

WMAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN
The iconic musical is heading to Abu Dhabi this month
hether you grew up belting out Dancing Queen or discovered ABBA’s top tunes through TikTok, there’s no denying it: their music is absolute magic. And for you fans here in the UAE, it’s time to sing, dance and celebrate as the iconic musical, Mamma Mia! is coming to Abu Dhabi. It is set to dazzle audiences from June 11 to 22 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island.
The musical is a celebration of ABBA’s timeless melodies – loved by everyone from Gen Z to our lovely grandparents, who all know their inescapably infectious pop anthems.
In fact, Mamma Mia The Musical was named after one of its chart-topping singles – Mamma Mia, which continues to stir our souls even though it has been five decades since it hit the radio waves back in 1975.
Mamma Mia the Musical was an idea conceived by Judy Craymer, a British producer who was working with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (two members of ABBA) on the musical Chess. She believed that the 1980s song The Winner Takes It All had excellent potential for a wonderful story. After a decade of trying to convince Andersson and Ulvaeus, a writer was bought in to write the script and the curtains raised on its very first show in 1999.
From there it has travelled across the world to over 50
countries with over 1,500 performances to its name. And it is performed in various languages as well from German to Swedish, Italian, Spanish and even Japanese, allowing the show to connect with audiences globally. Around 65 million people have seen the show, which means ‘My, my, how can you resist it?’
Many of you may have seen the movie under the same name, which is based on the musical. It hit the screens back in 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and other star actors. The movie was another major box office hit and introduced ABBA’s music to a whole new generation. It was so popular, a sequel came out in 2018.
Want to know more about the story? Sit back and read on, because you are in for one interesting tale of family, friendship, and love.
Mamma Mia is set on the (fictional) picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi and revolves around a young woman named Sophie who is preparing for her wedding. However, there is one very important person missing – her father. In a bid to have him at her wedding, Sophie invites three men from her mother Donna’s past, hoping one of them is her biological father. But she has to do it all without her mother knowing.
However, it doesn’t go according to plan and each character must navigate on their own while dealing with their feelings. Ultimately, the musical celebrates love, family, friendship, and the joys of self-discovery.
And of course, it’s all intertwined with the unforgettable music of ABBA backed
with some wonderful dance moves, glittering costumes and simple yet gorgeous set designs. Tickets start from Dhs125 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, and from Dhs200 from Friday to Sunday. Do note, children under six and babies will not be admitted into Etihad Arena.
If you want to make the most of your experience, arrive on time as the drama starts the second the lights in the theatre go out. Doors open an hour before the show giving you enough time to pick up some drinks or a bite to eat.

BRAD PITT’S F1 MOVIE TO PREMIERE IN ABU DHABI
Fast cars, big stars, and a local spotlight
Start your engines – Hollywood horsepower is heading to the UAE capital this month. The highly anticipated Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt is set for its regional premiere in Abu Dhabi on June 25, ahead of its global release. Moviegoers and motorsport fans alike are revving up for a cinematic spectacle that combines A-list star power with real-deal racing action, much of it captured right here in the UAE.
Directed by Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski, the film brings together a high-octane cast led by Brad Pitt and
Adding a strong local touch, the production involved 284 UAE-based crew members and 15 up-andcoming trainees, spotlighting the region’s growing talent pool. This collaboration was made possible through the combined efforts of Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority, the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, and Apple Studios, who chose the capital as a major filming hub for the blockbuster.
This isn’t Abu Dhabi’s first moment in the movie spotlight, but it may be one of its fastest. Fittingly, the film features the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Viewers can also expect glimpses of the city’s skyline and landmarks, offering global audiences a new perspective on the capital’s cinematic appeal.
Fueling the region’s allure is its generous filming incentive: a 50 per cent
rebate scheme introduced this January, making Abu Dhabi one of the most attractive destinations for international filmmakers. This landmark initiative builds on more than a decade of investment in turning the capital into a worldclass production hub, with past credits including Dune, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Mission: Impossible –Fallout
The buzz around the F1 movie has been steadily building since whispers of Brad Pitt’s appearance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December sparked excitement across social media. Some fans claim they caught a glimpse of the star on the circuit, others settled for a rewatch of Moneyball at home. But come June, there’ll be no mistaking it: the man himself will be back in Abu Dhabi for the premiere.
Follow @f1movie for behind-the-scenes updates, and get ready for a summer blockbuster that’s part adrenaline rush, part hometown pride.

FLUTTER FABULOUS
Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi set to open in September
Abu Dhabi is no stranger to architectural marvels and headlinegrabbing attractions, but its latest crowd-puller has something entirely different up its wings: 10,000 of them, to be exact.
The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, slated to open post-summer next to The National Aquarium at Al Qana, is the capital’s first fully immersive butterfly experience – and it’s as nature-driven as it is Instagram-friendly.
Spread across lush, climate-controlled bio-domes, The Butterfly Gardens promises to be a living, fluttering, eco-themed adventure divided into two distinct hemispheres: Asia and the Americas. Each zone showcases butterflies native to its region, alongside a menagerie of unexpected companions. Think two-toed sloths and caiman crocodiles lounging in the Americas dome, while bearcats, koi carp, and a chorus of Asian insects call the opposite side home.
Guests will be able to stroll through vibrant tropical landscapes as butterflies
perform spontaneous aerial acrobatics around them. The domes will have been engineered to mimic real ecosystems, offering not only an authentic environment for the residents, but also a climate-controlled reprieve from Abu Dhabi’s sunniest excesses.
Paul Hamilton, General Manager of The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, describes the vision best: “It’s more than an attraction; it’s a nature reserve designed to promote a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our ecosystems.”
Whether you’re chasing butterflies or just your inner child, this one-of-a-kind experience is set to become Abu Dhabi’s newest mustvisit. And let’s be honest –how often do you get to hang out with a bearcat, chase a butterfly, and meet a sloth before lunch?

COMIC ROYALTY CONTINUE TO TAKE THE STAGE AS THE ABU DHABI COMEDY SEASON CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER
[JUNE 25]
PETE DAVIDSON
The king of chaotic charm and unapologetic honesty
Fresh off a string of headline-grabbing gigs, Pete Davidson is bringing his uniquely offbeat brand of comedy to Abu Dhabi – and let’s just say, it’s not your grandma’s stand-up show (unless your grandma has tattoos, a love for Staten Island, and an inexplicable crush on millennials in hoodies). Equal parts endearing and outrageous, Davidson’s onstage persona is a delightful rollercoaster of self-deprecating humour, brutally honest storytelling, and pop culture hot takes that somehow always land. Having turned his Saturday Night Live tenure into a springboard for superstardom, Davidson is so more than the guy who’s dated everyone. He’s a sharp, surprisingly introspective comedian who has mastered the art of making chaos sound charming. Whether he’s poking fun at celebrity culture, mental health stigma, or his own heavily tattooed life choices, Davidson delivers it all with the kind of shrug-and-smirk honesty that makes you
[JUNE 27]
DAVE CHAPPELLE
laugh, then weirdly want to give him a hug. Now, for the first time in Abu Dhabi, Pete is set to take the stage with new material, plenty of unfiltered thoughts, and probably a story or two that’ll make you both cringe and cackle. Expect a night of comedy that’s raw, real, and refreshingly ridiculous — a perfectly imperfect highlight of the season. Just don’t be surprised if you leave the venue wondering if chaos is, in fact, a comedy genre. (Spoiler: It is. And Pete Davidson invented it.)
The grandmaster of mic drops and uncomfortable truths
Brace yourselves, Abu Dhabi – comedy’s most fearless philosopher is back in the spotlight. Dave Chappelle, the undisputed heavyweight of sharp wit and cultural commentary, is bringing his razor-edged stand-up to the UAE, and if past performances are anything to go by, it’s going to be part comedy show, part masterclass, and 100 per cent unforgettable. With his signature mix of cigarette-in-hand cool and boundary-pushing brilliance, Chappelle tells jokes whilst simultaneously holding up a mirror to society and daring viewers to laugh while thinking, squirming, and occasionally gasping. One moment you’re cracking up at a perfectly timed punchline, the next you’re reevaluating your entire worldview. It’s comedy that hits hard – and stays with you.
From his early Chappelle’s Show fame to his legendary stand-up specials and surprise pop-up sets, Chappelle has built a reputation as both a performer and provocateur with purpose. He’s unfiltered, unapologetic, and unafraid to talk about the things most people avoid – race, politics, identity, and whatever else is keeping society up at night.
Now, for one electric night in Abu Dhabi, Chappelle is ready to serve up truth bombs, belly laughs, and the kind of cultural dissection that’ll leave you questioning everything. Come for the jokes. Stay for the existential crisis.
COMING UP NEXT MONTH…
The laughs don’t stop yet –one final act is on the way to cap off a summer packed with unforgettable comedy. It’s the grand finale of giggles, and it’s going out with a bang…
[July 12]
BILL BURR
The bald-headed bard of brutally honest observations, Mr Bill Burr is bringing his signature style of unapologetic, take-no-prisoners stand-up to the UAE to round out the incredible line-up of stars that have tread the boards of the Abu Dhabi Comedy Season. Armed with a mic, a scowl, and zero patience for modern nonsense, Burr dives headfirst into politics, relationships, social norms, and pretty much anything else that irritates him – which, luckily for us, is everything. Whether he’s grumbling about cancel culture or explaining why dogs are better than people, Burr’s rants are smart, sharp, and sneakily insightful.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD AWAITS
Here’s what we know about Disney Abu Dhabi
Dig out your Mickey ears – the House of Mouse is coming to the Middle East. In a move that’s sending Disney diehards into a frenzy, The Walt Disney Company has officially announced plans to open a brand-new theme park on Abu Dhabi’s entertainment-packed Yas Island. It’s Disney’s seventh-ever resort worldwide and its very first in the region. Here’s what we know so far about the most magical new addition to your future bucket list.
1. It’s Disney’s first Middle East park – and that’s a big deal
No more long-haul flights to California or Paris for a Disney fix. The upcoming Disneyland Abu Dhabi will bring the full magic of Disney to the region for the first time. That means easier access for millions across the Middle East, Africa, India, and beyond. With the park set to attract visitors from across several continents, this is a real game-changer for regional tourism.
2. The locale is perfect
As we know, Disney isn’t showing up to an empty sandbox. The park will rise on the
shores of Yas Island, our 9.7-square-mile entertainment district already home to SeaWorld, Warner Bros. World, Ferrari World, and some very serious roller coasters. It’s already a one-stop shop for high-octane fun, and Disney is about to raise the bar.
3. Think classic Disney, but make it Emirati
While exact details are still under wraps (it’s early days), Disney has promised the park will be “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati.” Translation: expect Cinderella-style castles with futuristic Gulf flair. Early renderings show a massive
crystal castle as the park’s centrepiece – a shimmering new icon that could give Sleeping Beauty’s digs some competition.
4. It’ll be Disney’s most techsavvy park yet Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro wants to gamify the magic of Disney as much as possible. Disneyland Abu Dhabi is expected to be the company’s most technologically advanced park yet, with rumours of immersive games, smart interactivity, and augmented reality attractions that blur the line between fantasy and gameplay.
5. It’s coming… eventually Don’t hold out for tickets just yet. The park is still in its early planning stages, with an estimated opening in the early 2030s. But if you’ve ever waited in line for Space Mountain, you know good things are worth it. When it finally opens, Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be a futuristic fairytale brought to life, and we’re sure it’ll be absolutely worth the wait.

THE VILLAS
Six Senses Zighy Bay doesn’t do cookie-cutter luxury. Each villa is its own private world, blending stone walls, palm-frond ceilings, shaded outdoor majlis, and a pool so perfectly chilled you’ll consider moving in. They’re equal parts rugged and refined – just like the landscape. Whether beachside or mountainbacked, every space feels like an escape from the algorithm. No noise, no schedule, no shoes required. Just the kind of luxury that whispers, not shouts.
Accommodation varies during the year. June prices start from Dhs8,150 per villa per night. sixsenses.com

FOOD CITIES TO DISCOVER THIS SUMMER
Food is the gravity of life - we live to eat, not eat to live. And if you do otherwise, then maybe it’s time to reconsider, for there is so much incredible food in this world and nearly not enough time to try it all. Food is perhaps the most integral, telling part of a country’s social
fabric – it answers so many questions about a culture, the local way of life and why things are the way they are.
If you’re not sure where to start, get inspired with a foodie-focused holiday to these hotspots, where the local flavour is the way to discover.
Wazir Khan mosque, Lahore
Bangkok
The hawker-dining scene of Bangkok is the highlight of this cuisine, a street-food culture so strong, you’ll find the best food for mere dollars inside tin shacks, under plastic roofs and in the glow of fluorescent tubelights. This tour is best done on foot, where you walk around the honeycomb lanes, see what whets your appetite and just go for it. Flavours in Bangkok are bright and explosive, with heat, tang and colour, much like their food markets – a haven for foodies.
Eat this: Sample the Pad Thai, street-style, grilled skewers, fried chicken and som tom, to name just a very few. The variety is endless – you can eat your way through the city for the entirety of your trip, but do visit Chinatown and Old Town.
Stay here: The 1905 Heritage Corner is as boutique as it gets – once a tearoom, now a guesthouse laced with character and charm, its got a gentle feel with polished wood bedrooms, metrotiled bathrooms, old-school furniture, and Chinese antiques. 1905heritagecorner.com
Lahore
Lucknow
A stunning North Indian city dripping in history and the timeless charm of the nawabs, the blue-blooded elites who birthed the Awadhi cuisine in their royal kitchens. This culinary tradition still lives in the winding lanes of the city, a symphony of luxurious flavours and techniques that reflect the excess of wealth of that time. The roots lie in the influence of the Mughal Empire, chooseing subtlety and refinement over the heat the country is synonymous for.
Eat this: You can’t leave without sampling the legendary galouti and kakori kabas, nihari, Lucknowi birynai, sheermal and kulche, served up quick, hot and unfussy on the streets of Aminabad, Chowk, Hazratganj and Akbari Gate.
Stay here: The Taj Mahal Lucknow is a tribute to the bygone era of the city, transporting you back to the glory of the nawabs with splendour and opulence. The beautiful domes, lattice work, expansive gardens, dignified columns and private balconies are sure to whisk you away. @tajmahallucknow
The Punjabi city of Lahore is called the culinary heart of Pakistan, and rightly so. With a unique street food and dining culture, Lahore welcomes hungry patrons with open arms and regales them with tales of spicy kababs, charcoal-grilled meats and fiery curries at stalls and dhabas that come alive at under brightly lit nights. The residents of the city flank their food proudly, and the warm hospitality of this community is one to experience.
Eat this: Kababs are king here – try the seekh kabab, the malai boti, the chapli kabab, all grilled to smoky perfection and spiced with a myriad of flavours. The curries are also quite popular - the karahis with steaming naan is an excellent place to start. Stay here: The Nishat Hotel Gulberg is one of the most premium properties in Lahore, a luxury boutique hotel featuring a whimsical, modern-day approach with it’s printed tiled floors, quirky sculptures and fun artwork. @the_nishat
Lima
Lima is considered the undisputed king of South American food cities, and the secret to that lies in how deeply integrated the cuisine is with the local culture. The wealth of local produce ranges from the coast to the mountains and the jungles, and there is no dearth of flavour and colour, with each dish an explosion of tangy, spicy and savoury in your mouth. Community dining is also a huge part of the culture here, hence the emphasis on good food.
Eat this: Peru is, of course, home of a crowd favourite – the ceviche. Here, you can find it on expensive menus in fancy restaurants, but there, this seafood dish marinated in citrus and spices can be found in small, streetside outlets – the freshest catch and the brightest flavours.
Stay here: Hotel B oozes sweet Peruvian charm, first built in 1914 as a summer home for a wealthy family. The white stucco Belle Époque mansion has since been restored and sits firmly as one of Lima’s best hotels. @hotelblima
New Orleans
New Orleans’ culinary history is as rich as it is diverse, with influences spanning French, Spanish, Vietnamese, African and more, all testament to the history of immigration. You’ll find the best, most authentic local fare on the streets all around the city, so put on your walking shoes and get going, making stops at some of their annual festivals honouring their best food.
Eat this: Sample the shrimp Creole, jambalaya, gumbo and red beans and rice, and of course, you can’t forget the beignets. We’ve all seen Chef, and we’ve all loved it. These are things you’ll find in the small joints across the city.
Stay here: Hotel Peter & Paul is a boutique beauty revived from a former 19thcentury Catholic church, schoolhouse, convent, and rectory. It’s bright and whimsical, with mint green doors and canary yellow check-in counter, and it offers an unusual serene escape from the chaos of the streets.

Cairo
Cairo has a distinct, personal cuisine existing from the time of the pharaohs. It’s derived from the Middle East, while still remaining unique, and dining out or grabbing a drink won’t break your bank. Culinary trips to Cairo come with a flavour of hospitality and diversity, so make sure you explore the backstreets for those stalls and carts.
Eat this: When in Egypt, you can’t miss out on the koshary, the ful medames and the molokhia, all hearty options. Head over to the streets of Khan El-Khalili, Cairo’s largest open-air market, not just for souvenir hunting, or explore Al-Muizz Street and Downtown Cairo.
Stay here: Marriott Mena House has been around for a long time, since 1886, to be precise, but continues to be one of the best hotels in the city. With direct, breathtaking views of the Pyramids of Giza, this property is unmissable.

Naples
We all know and love Italian food, the cuisine of choice for many a celebration and special occasion. The history of food in Naples is almost as ancient as the city itself, and the cuisine is a bit more humble than it’s more flashy neighbours. Ingredient-focused, with simple options and all that Neapolitan goodness. Traverse the streets and lanes for some of the best of their signature dishes. It’s strongly authentic, cheap and palate-friendly.
Eat this: The pizza fritta is a no-brainer option, but there are also some great fried, street-food favourites like cuoppo and the pasta frittata. Head over to the Pignasecca district for your eats. Stay here: Duomo House comes with all the romance of the Italian holiday – a B&B that was once an abandoned apartment. Filled with repurposed, quirky antique finds, Duomo House stands out like the rest of it’s B&B counterparts. This is your fun, artsy stay in Italy that you’re going to tell everyone about. @theduomohouse
Istanbul
With a street food culture so strong, you might not need a real restaurant, Istanbul is a must-visit for foodies. The city loves it’s baked goods and meats, with a wide variety to choose from in all those departments, and a subtle profile of flavours that dodges any excesses – spice, oil and the works. Communal dining is big, and they feel quite strongly about some of their delicacies –an ownership that will rope you in, too.
Eat this: Wander the streets and snack on simit, menemn, katmer, Turkish delights and borek, to name a few. The snack game is very strong with this one, with plenty of handheld goodness you can pick up on the side of the streets.
Stay here: Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanhamet is one of the two Four Seasons properties in the city, and sits in the midst of the Old Town, where the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace keep a watchful eye. Once a prison for intellectuals, it is now insanely luxurious, a romantic, historic façade of bright yellow and stunning insides, Turkish textiles and all the opulence.

Lagos
Lagos is all about food. It takes centre stage in daily life, culture and history, and retains a very distinct and dynamic profile unlike any other cuisine. There is much diversity, with different flavours coming from different regions, and is known for being easy on the pocket without compromising on any of the flavours. Prepare to gorge on Yoruba cuisine.
Eat this: On the streets and in the small buka joints, sample the jollof rice, the suya, the boli and the puff-puff. Like most places, the small, local joints may offer you the most authentic version of the cuisine. Stay here: The Wheatbaker calls itself Lagos’ most iconic hotel, and is a stunning boutique property inspired by art. It’s one of the sleekest places to stay in the city, decorated in minimalist black and white and has all the luxuries a modern traveller would seek, like flatscreen TVs, massive beds and minibars.

A desert escape
Experience an all-inclusive, family-friendly escape in the heart of the Empty Quarter at Aldhafra Resort, Vignette Collection
Abu Dhabi has no shortage of impressive getaways – but few things beat the fun and convenience of an all-inclusive stay paired with a liberating desert road trip. So, when we heard IHG was stepping in to reimagine Aldhafra Resort as the ultimate desert escape, our curiosity was piqued. The bags were packed, the playlist queued, and before we knew it, we were cruising down the 160kph-limit stretch to Liwa.
CHECK-IN AND FIRST FEEL
Your arrival is greeted with a warm welcome: local Liwa dates and steaming Arabic qahwa. The layout, meanwhile, feels effortless. This is one of the easiest resorts we’ve ever navigated – compact enough to feel comfortable, yet packed with just enough to keep you entertained. There’s an infinity pool surrounded by sunbeds for that hard-earned tan, a wellequipped gym, and balconies close enough to the date palms that you could almost pluck your own.
THE SPACE
There’s something unmistakably private about the way this resort is laid out. It’s
easy to imagine full buyouts for destination weddings, big family reunions, or teambuilding corporate retreats. It’s big enough to cater to all your dining and downtime needs, without the sprawl that requires a golf cart just to get from your room to the restaurant. Everything’s a stroll away— including a neat little ballroom equipped with a projector, just in case that offsite idea suddenly feels very real.
THE ROOMS
A Deluxe King Room with Desert View envelopes you in 32 square metres of Arabian comfort amid the Empty Quarter’s mighty desert dunes. While the rooms may not be villas with private pools, they’re very spacious and well-equipped, allowing you to sprawl out on lavish couches and comfy beds that will have you catching your Z’s in no time. Most rooms have a pool view (overlooking the central courtyard), and for refreshments, your minibar comes with an impressive selection). For larger parties, we’d recommend the One-Bedroom Liwa Suite or the Two-Bedroom Shamal Suite.
THE FOOD & DRINK
There’s just one restaurant on site, but it does the job. Al Badiya serves up hearty Arabic staples alongside international crowd-pleasers like shish tawouk and a standout truffle mushroom soup. Breakfast is a well-stocked buffet featuring eggs your way, fresh breads, fruit, cereals and more. When the sun goes down, Layali bar is where to unwind. Intimate yet approachable, this little lounge comes complete with a piano and easy charm.
THE ACTIVITIES
No desert resort would be complete without classic Arabian experiences. Guests can pose with a falcon, ride camels through the sands, try their hand at traditional basket weaving, create sand bottle art, or enjoy some of the region’s famously clear desert skies during a stargazing session. A hit with overseas visitors, and honestly, still charming even if you live here.
VERDICT
Relaxed and refined, this is a great staycay spot waiting to be discovered.
PRICE:
A Deluxe King Room with Desert View was priced from Dhs900 when we visited.
