EDITOR’S LETTER

AND SO IT BEGINS...

There’s something intentional about life here, a balance of heritage and innovation, tradition and bold reinvention. As the new Editor of What’s On, it’s been a joy discovering what makes the capital not just a neighbour to Dubai, but a city with its own rhythm, its own favourites, its own fiercely loyal locals.

I’ve only just moved to the UAE from South Africa, and the past few weeks have been a whirlwind of discovery: new places, new people, new ways of navigating the everyday. And yet, despite the unfamiliarity, I’ve been struck by how quickly it already feels like home. From the warmth of the people to the richness of what’s on offer, this place knows how to welcome, surprise, and impress.

This issue arrives as we lean into the thick of summer and rather than escaping it, we’re embracing it. Our cover story explores just how much there is to enjoy right here in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE, with staycations, cultural escapes, nature retreats, and family-friendly options that make a passport feel optional. It’s proof that the best holidays don’t always require a boarding pass.

We’re also celebrating the return of one of the capital’s most electrifying events: UFC Fight Night, landing at Etihad Arena this July. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just in it for the atmosphere, there’s no denying the buzz it brings to the city.

Elsewhere in the issue, we take a culinary detour to the Greek restaurants bringing sun-soaked flavours to the capital, from upscale island vibes to cosy neighbourhood gems. It’s our pick of where to dine like you’re on a beach in the Aegean, without leaving the capital.

A heartfelt thank you to my incredible editorial team – Madie, Aarti, Sammi, Manaal, Lana, and our endlessly talented Art Director Sheila – who have made the start of this new chapter feel exciting and supported.

And to Mr Ian Fairservice, the pioneer who launched this brand more than four decades ago, thank you for the legacy I now get to help carry forward.

Here’s to local escapes, bold events, and Abu Dhabi in its summer glow.

The brunch...

SOFITEL AL HAMRA INSIDE THE EPIC WHAT’S ON DUBAI LOCK-IN AT

Sun, beats, and back-to-back good times in Ras Al Khaimah…

The What’s On Dubai Lock-In made a triumphant return this past weekend – and it did not disappoint. Taking over the stunning Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort in sunny Ras Al Khaimah, the all-inclusive weekender brought the vibes, the crowds, and a whole lot of unforgettable moments. From Saturday, June 14 to Sunday, June 15, guests showed up in their freshest whites for two jam-packed days of epic eats, drinks, beats, and beachside bliss –making it one of our biggest bashes yet. You know how we do – it’s always a good time at the What’s On Lock-In, and this one was no different. We kicked off the weekend with a whole roster of welcome activations for our guests to get stuck into.

Before the brunch...

A fitness class by Reset Fitness got tour VIP guests pumping for the fun coming up ahead, and elsewhere in the property, a series of pop-ups kept them busy as they checked-in. A pop-up by custom denim brand Serge De Nimes brought the style quotient while a stall by Lush decked out the guests with skincare to get brunchready.

The in-house salon, Artilla, gave the ladies some TLC and pre-brunch beauty rituals with blow-dry services, and the Sofitel Spa by Clarins helped guests relax with foot massages and cucumber eye masks. For those looking for a bit more action, game installations by Adventure Island and TEP Factor offered just that.

As the pre-brunch activations wound up, guests dressed up in their white best and showed up to Reunion, the property’s stunning French restaurant for a brunch to remember. Delicious French food in sharing platters, along with buffets of cheese platters, desserts, starters and salads fuelled the guests as they had a good time, socialising and sipping on champagne. Live entertainment included a DJ and saxist that brought all the groove and vibes.

Stalls outside the brunch offered guests a chance to take some souvenirs home. The Charm Bar was a massive hit – many flocked to the stall, picking out bracelets, necklaces and brooches customised with beautiful charms of their choice. Right beside it, a live sketch artist, Fatima Raza, put her brush to work and brought the guests to life on paper, creating beautiful memorabilia for them to take away.

The after-party

After the classy sit-down brunch, the party moved on to Waka for cocktails and high-energy fun. The music turned up, thanks to DJ Timo, and so did the people, dancing the afternoon away while sipping on drinks and and taking in the beautiful sunset. A Cuban live singing-duo also took to the stage towards the end of the evening and kept the party going.

The night came to a close with a whiskey masterclass hosted by Peter Lebese. This Johnny Walker tasting experience also included a world winning bartender, Cameron James Boyd, former UAE & Oman World Class Winner 2022.

The next morning...

After a day of insane fun and memories, the next morning was all about relaxation, rejuvenation and recharging. A hearty breakfast spread at East Restaurant kickedoff the slow morning, providing guests with much-needed fuel, and a restorative poolside Hatha yoga session by Sofitel Spa by Clarins helped regain balance. Guests spent the afternoon lounging by the pool, taking refreshing dips and making the most of their time before heading back to the bustle of the city.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Raha Moharrak

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants to their hidden gems and must-try activities. This month, we speak to with Raha Moharrak (@rahamoharrak), a trailblazing Saudi adventurer who made history in 2013 as the first Saudi woman – and the youngest Arab – to summit Mount Everest. Originally from Jeddah, Moharrak is now based in Dubai. She shares some of her top spots that you need to add to your radar.

There is this wonderful laid-back hotel with a beach that welcomes dogs, called Umm Al Quwain Beach Hotel and honestly, it’s my happy place. The water has the same calming magic as the Red Sea I grew up beside, familiar, grounding, and full of nostalgia. I go whenever I can with my German Shepherds, Thunder and Petra. It’s not five-star fancy, but that’s the charm.

Tucked behind the mangroves in Abu Dhabi, Jubail Island has become one of my favourite escapes. It’s quiet, serene, and feels worlds away from the city’s buzz. I discovered it on a whim and now I go whenever I need to reconnect, with nature or with myself. Kayaking through the mangroves at golden hour is pure magic.

It’s hard to pick just one, but if I had to, I’d say LPM in DIFC holds a special place in my heart. It’s where elegance meets ease, the kind of place where the burrata is always perfect, the service – effortless, and the atmosphere transports you to the French Riviera. For something with a little more grit and soul, I love Maria Bonita. It’s not trying to impress, it just does. You can show up with sandy feet, sit under string lights, and dig into food that’s bursting with flavor and personality. I love places that have stories in their walls, and Maria Bonita has plenty.

When I need to switch off, I head to Kite Beach for a sunset volleyball game. There’s something grounding about playing barefoot in the sand, with the sound of the waves behind you and the sky slowly melting into shades of orange and pink. It’s my therapy, my meditation, my way of remembering what freedom feels like.

A sunrise hot air balloon ride over the desert. It’s not just about the view, it’s about perspective. As the first light spills across the dunes like liquid gold, something inside you softens. The world below quiets, the sky stretches endlessly, and for a few fleeting moments, time feels suspended. You float above it all as the desert wakes slowly beneath you. And it hits you: how vast, how silent, how beautiful life can be when you’re not rushing through it. It’s not just magical, it’s humbling.

Secret bars in Dubai to match every kind of mood

YOU DON’T FIND THESE PLACES… THEY FIND YOU

WORDS: LANA DU

There are no signs, no obvious entrances – just soft glows, great drinks, doors you’d miss if you weren’t looking, and rooms with the right kind of mood. These are Dubai’s best speakeasies – hidden behind kitchens, bookshelves, and tea rooms. Some nights call for something dark and mysterious. Others, for intimate, groovy energy without the full-on scene. Either way, no wrong door –just the right kind of vibe. Pick your mood and head in.

GABA

VOYAGE BY AMELIA

Hidden above Amelia Lounge, Voyage reflects a retro-futuristic mood – aviation nostalgia, velvet seating, and chrome details that feel cinematic. It’s intimate, dramatic, and quietly bold. Come here when the mood calls for mystery, low lighting and depth over noise.

Amelia Lounge, Downtown Dubai. @voyagebyamelia

ONGAKU BY CLAP

Hidden in Dubai Marina, GABA moves at its own pace. By day, it’s a serene tea lounge – rare organic brews, calm energy, soft lights, and a quiet sense of ritual. But behind a discreet door, the mood shifts. The bar feels like an art-filled living room with a DJ –intimate, low-key, and effortlessly cool. Go when you’re in the mood for a night that feels more like a house party only a select few are invited to.

GABA, M level, Marina Promenade, Dubai Marina. @gaba.dubai

High above DIFC, CLAP is where rooftop glamour meets Tokyo cool – geometric angles, artful details, and an ambient glow. Just behind it, Ongaku dials things down and turns the volume up. RETURN OF THE REAPER VS. RISE OF THE SUBMISSION MACHINE

UFC Abu Dhabi is back –and it’s bringing high-stakes middleweight mayhem with Robert Whittaker vs. Reinier de Ridder

WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

It’s going to be hot in Abu Dhabi this month, and we’re not just talking about the weather.

On Saturday, July 26, the UFC returns to Etihad Arena on Yas Island, and this time, it’s personal.

The Middle East fight fans are in for a treat as Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker, the stoic former UFC middleweight champion, makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon against surging Dutch submission specialist Reinier “The Dutch Knight” de Ridder, a man who’s choked, armbarred, and generally tangled up every fighter unlucky enough to face him.

Let’s unpack this spicy pairing…

Whittaker: The boomerang returns

Australia’s Robert Whittaker (27-8) is as gritty as they come, equal parts gentleman and assassin. He’s built his career dismantling some of the most dangerous middleweights on Earth, including Yoel Romero, Darren Till, and Jared Cannonier. But last October, Whittaker hit a snag (or more precisely, a Khamzat-shaped freight train) at UFC 308, where a pre-existing injury led to a swift submission and some serious dental reconstruction.

Still, don’t mistake that loss for decline. Whittaker remains ranked No. 5, and when he’s healthy, he’s a human highlight reel of lightning-fast combos and pinpoint kicks.

“It was an unfortunate night,” Whittaker said in a recent media scrum. “But I’ve dusted myself off. I’m still hungry, and I’m still dangerous.”

Reinier de Ridder: Submission artist turned striker?

Meanwhile, Reinier de Ridder (20-2) has been climbing the UFC ranks like a Dutchman scaling a windmill in a storm. The former ONE Championship double champ has wasted no time turning heads since debuting in the UFC just last year. With back-toback wins over Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland, and, most impressively, handing blue-chip wrestler Bo Nickal his first loss, de Ridder isn’t knocking on the door of title contention, he’s dropkicking it.

And just when everyone thought he was a pure grappler, he outstruck Nickal, who, let’s not forget, once seemed unbeatable. “I just do what I do,” de Ridder said. “Pressure, smart shots, and when it’s time, I take them down and finish. That’s still the plan.”

Clash of styles

If this matchup were a Marvel movie, Whittaker would be Captain Precision, and de Ridder would be Doctor Doom (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu edition). Whittaker wants to keep it standing, darting in and out with explosive hands and kicks. De Ridder wants to hug him tightly, very tightly, until he taps or naps.

What makes this fight fascinating is the X-factor on both sides. Can Whittaker fend off de Ridder’s takedowns after a long layoff? Can de Ridder survive the Aussie’s bombs long enough to close the distance?

Whoever answers those questions best could find themselves on the short list for a middleweight title shot.

What’s at stake?

De Ridder has his eyes on the winner of Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319. If he can beat Whittaker, he might get his wish. But Whittaker’s no gatekeeper. He’s still a top dog and itching for another shot at gold. A win would reestablish him as the division’s most dangerous veteran and remind everyone why he once ruled the 185-pound kingdom.

So, whether you’re Team Reaper or rooting for the rise of the submission sorcerer from Breda, UFC Abu Dhabi promises fireworks, fight IQ, and perhaps a fresh new title contender by night’s end.

IT’S A UAE SUMMER… IT’S A UAE SUMMER…

Jet set away to far-off locations without ever leaving the UAE

For many in the UAE, summer is a time of transit. Residents look to escape the extreme heat, take advantage of the slowing pace, and lock in some downtime. But for those in Abu Dhabi with no plans to witness the inside of an airport this season, fret not – there’s plenty to explore right here at home. From luxury staycations to unexpected weekend detours, these UAE escapes (with a few Abu Dhabi gems front and centre) will make you feel like you went on a whole holiday – no boarding pass required.

Abu Dhabi

Anantara Santorini

It’s in the name. Anantara Santorini is perched on the edge of the Arabian Gulf’s pristine blue waters, and will take you away to Grecian lanes drenched in white, blue and stone. It’s a stunning crossover between raw Aegean beauty and refined Emirati elegance, and is truly an escape - a secluded spot ideally situated halfway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in Ghantoot. This adults-only beachfront address features just 22 sumptuous rooms and suites, sun-drenched terraces, and each coming with their own 24/7 butler. @anantarasantorini

Jubail Mangrove Park Mangroves are lush and a plenty, being a unique brand of UAE escapes, and this spot will take you away from the sand and the skyscrapers into lush greenery and blue waters. The stunning Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi is an absolute must-visit for natureseekers. A huge boardwalk will take visitors on a nature trail through the natural landscape of mangroves near Yas Island and, take it from us, it’s amazing. As well as the stunning nature walk, there’s loads of activities for the whole family to get involved in such as guided boardwalk tours, kayak trips, and e-canoe tours of the mangroves. @jubail_mangrove_park

Anantara Santorini

Al Wathba Salt Lakes

This awe-inspiring locale, which was once a salt flat, has been developed into lakes that are now home to many of Abu Dhabi’s natural species, most famously the 4,000-odd flamingoes, over 250 species of birds and 37 plant varieties that have travellers and families driving down from far and wide to photograph these relics of a bygone world. The Al Wathba Lakes are designated for protection by law, and also include self-guided walking trails for you to explore. They’re a unique formation of nature, and not seen anywhere else in the country, which is why the visit is worth it.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Head over to Sir Bani Yas Island and for one of the few UAE escapes to Africa. There’s three Anantara resorts to choose from on the island, but luxurious beach escapes can be found at Anantara Al Yamm resort, a 30-villa sanctuary designed like a sleeping village. For a touch of African safari life, the recently reimagined Al Sahel resort with its pool villas overlooking local wildlife offers a unique staycation experience. The wildlife drive is a must for an outof-Africa experience of spotting cheetah, giraffes, ostriches, Arabian Oryx and the rest of the 14,000 animals as part of the island’s nature reserve.

@anantarasirbaniyas

Al Wathba Desert Resort & Spa

Let’s go back to the roots for a bit. Al Wathba Desert Resort & Spa by The Luxury Collection is a little slice of silence and Arabian magic, tucked away in the mysterious dunes of the Empty Quarter Desert. The property is designed to emulate a remote Bedouin village, complete with wood finishings, bronze accents, clay pottery, lanterns and thatched walls, and a slow serenity that is far removed from the noise of the fast-paced city. The resort also offers some themed activities, including archery, falconry, a desert safari, camel rides and the Flow Rider machine, where you can surf on water in the desert.

@alwathbahotel

Outside the capital

Kingfisher Retreat, Sharjah

Consider this your beachfront safari retreat nestled in the arms of nature. The Kingfisher Retreat by the Sharjah Collection is no less than a sanctuary, located among the mangroves opening into the stunning waters of the Indian Ocean. The site has a conservation hub that shelters exotic birds, gazelles, turtles, and crabs. It’s smack dab in the midst of some of the UAE’s most exotic wildlife and a great break from the typical desert staycations that are so popular here. Opulent tents with private pools and bespoke dining, it’s as luxurious as it gets. Getting there: You can drive to the resort’s pick-up point in Kalba, from where a short private boat ride will bring you to the island.

@kingfisherretreat

Al Zorah Natural Reserve, Ajman

This lesser-known ecosystem in Ajman is made up of a tidal creek and a lush mangrove forest home to a rich variety of birdlife. Natural greenery is not much of a common sight in the UAE, but you’ll find that here. Mangroves are an important element of the coastline in this part of the world and you can spot nearly 60 species of birds, including the Greater Flamingo and a number of egrets and herons. If serene waters aren’t quite enough for you, and some adrenaline is the fix, you can also participate in water sports like windsurfing and kayaking.

Getting there: The drive to the reserve takes about two and a half hours from Abu Dhabi.

Anantara World Islands, Dubai

This Anantara property brings a slice of the Maldives. Be whisked away on a 15-minute boat ride from Jumeirah 4 Port to an inspiring escape that pays homage to Anantara’s Thai roots. This 70-villa resort has a barefoot luxury feel with curated experiences all happening on island time.

The whole island oozes tropical allure: swaying palm trees surround the lagoonsized swimming pool, a growing garden spills down to the sugar-white sandy beach, and thatched roof villas all make the most of their outdoor areas, many of which have a private pool.

Getting there: Drive to the resort’s welcome centre in J4 Marina, Umm Suqeim and then take a private 15-minute boat ride.

CHINA TANG

Love Cantonese and fine dining? Well, this new gem knows what it’s doing

What do we really know about Cantonese food? Other than the comfort classics we crave on movie nights – the silky dumplings, crispy spring rolls, spicy noodles out of delivery boxes – we’ve tried it all, we love it, we keep coming back for more. But here’s the question – what does Cantonese cuisine look like when it’s dressed up? When it’s served with ceremony and plated like art. That’s where China Tang comes in. This Dubai debut at the Lana Promenade brings with it the legacy of the original London icon – founded by the late Sir David Tang –it’s refined, nostalgic, and so well-executed it makes you rethink what “Cantonese food” has meant to you up until now.

THE STORY

The original China Tang in London’s Dorchester is a legend in its own right, known for its mastering approach to traditional Cantonese cuisine and impeccable service. China Tang was Sir David Tang’s passion project – mixing the glamour of 1930s Shanghai with authentic Cantonese culinary heritage. Its Dubai

arrives in bamboo steamers, each lid lift revealing something too pretty to touch (but you do, of course). Larger dishes come on custom trays or carved platters that feel less like serviceware and more like a curated frame for what’s on display. Every dish arrives framed like a work of art, even the rice shows up looking styled.

THE FOOD

outpost sits in the Lana promenade, by the waters of Marasi Bay Marina, echoing the grandeur of its London and Hong Kong siblings and keeping that same DNA, while making space for its own story.

THE SPACE

Walking into China Tang feels like stepping into a different city, maybe even a different decade. The interiors lean into 1930s Shanghai glamour – mirrored walls, art deco patterns, velvet textures, dimmed lighting that makes everything (and everyone) glow. There’s drama in the design in a playful way. The colour palette is vibrant but somehow still cosy. And then there’s the view. Step out to the terrace and you’re met with a front-row seat to Marasi Bay, all lit up and lowkey stunning.

THE PRESENTATION

At China Tang, the artistry begins long before your first bite. The plates themselves are a statement – hand-painted ceramics and elegant serving trays. The dim sum

The menu celebrates the comfort dishes we love – but levels them up with technique, balance, and quality ingredients. We kicked things off with the foie gras cherries (Dhs198) – rich, delicate bites wrapped in a glossy cherry glaze with just the right touch of sweetness. Alongside, the spinach in sesame and peanut dressing brought texture (Dhs88). Then we had the golden shrimp har-kau (Dhs88), crispy seafood prawn cheung-fan (Dhs68), which was easily a favourite. We also had the vegetable spring rolls (Dhs78), Sir David’s hot & sour soup (Dhs88) – a signature dish and another favourite. While the iconic Beijing duck is a signature main, we opted for a different direction, and we weren’t disappointed. We had the crispy shredded beef (Dhs218), stir-fried scallop & asparagus (Dhs198). For dessert, we went with the chilled Sichuan jelly (Dhs78), served with a full tableside presentation where we picked our favourite fruits and toppings – a refreshing, light finish to the meal. We also tried the chocolate and jasmine tea cake (Dhs98), which was beautifully balanced and absolutely delicious.

The Lana Promenade, Dorchester Collection, Marasi Bay Marina. Tel: (0)4 295 7464. @chinatang_dubai

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

China Tang reframes what Cantonese fine dining looks like in Dubai – an iconic name delivering on both taste and atmosphere. Whether you’re here for the legacy or the dim sum, you’ll leave impressed. We came for the food, stayed for the vibe, and we’ll be back for more.

BREWDOG

Beloved craft beer megabrand from Scotland makes its Dubai debut

From a business point of view, BrewDog is doing very well. The two founders of the trendy Scottish craft beer company – James Watt and Martin Dickie – are worth an estimated Dhs1.3 billion each while their company is valued between Dhs8 and Dhs10 billion depending on which financial reports you read. Founded in 2007 with a mission to make delicious craft beer, BrewDog now has more than 100 pubs around the world and has finally landed in Dubai to splash their considerable cash on a giant temple of hops on Bluewaters Island.

sign, BrewDog sprawls across two floors and gives patrons superb views of the city from its terraces.

Visiting on a Wednesday night, we were greeted by a lively musical duo rattling through violin and guitar covers of pop hits. We suggest you keep moving however, past the augmented reality dartboards, to the more inviting bar upstairs and by ‘inviting’ we mean darker and quieter.

It’s reported that BrewDog plan to open eight pubs in Dubai before 2030, and this ‘industrial chic’ outpost is the brand’s impressive Middle East debut. Announcing their arrival with a loud woof, BrewDog has elbowed its way into a prime corner plot on the promenade under Ain Dubai. Fronted with a huge blue neon

Flop into a squishy Chesterfield booth and browse the 11 brews on the Daily Draft menu, which has intriguing tasting notes such as milkshake, hazy and mango. Prices range from Dhs50 for 500ml of BrewDog’s crisp and clean Lost Lager to Dhs63 for 330ml of their cult Elvis Juice, a punchy grapefruit IPA.

There’s no standing on ceremony at BrewDog, service is swift yet friendly. This place is about delivering glasses of quality craft hops to thirsty guests and then letting them get on with it. For a

360 tour of the BrewDog universe, order a flight of any four beers for Dhs125 in stemmed glasses that measure a third of a pint. It may not be your most economical decision of the evening but it allows you to explore the variety of zingy flavours that have made BrewDog a global phenomenon. Putting our glasses down for a moment, BrewDog also does food. A quintet of sublime chicken wings (Dhs55) and a pizza named The Big Pastrami One (Dhs95) paired wonderfully with a pint of Punk IPA described as spiky, bitter and tropical in its tasting notes.

Following the likes of Tap House (Downtown, Palm, Dubai Hills) and Goose Island (JBR and JVC), BrewDog continues the city’s welcome trend for craft beer pubs that offer guests a wide range of hops far more interesting than the usual mainstream brands. Carry on like this and BrewDog’s billionaire founders will continue to see the cash pour in. BrewDog, Bluewaters Island, Sun to Thur 12pm to 12am, Fri and Sat 12pm to 2am. WHAT’S ON VERDICT

BrewDog is a tail-wagging addition to Dubai’s growing craft beer scene.

REVIEW: KUMO

Step inside Dubai’s newest Japanese retro rage…

If you’re even somewhat active on social media, chances are you’ve come across Kumo – perhaps on your feed, or sent to you by a friend. Meaning “cloud” in Japanese, Kumo is the latest buzzworthy opening in Dubai, brought to you by the formidable homegrown hospitality group Independent – the team behind Parkers, SALT, Somewhere, and more.

This sleek Japanese concept is already making waves for its blend of tradition and modern flair, generating major online excitement in recent weeks. And while it may seem like another fleeting foodie trend, Kumo’s warmth, charm, and beautifully curated space give it serious staying power.

THE STORY

Kumo presents as an authentic Kyoto famiresu or family restaurant, attempting to emulate the soul of the classic family restaurants back in Kyoto. The small ones serving up food hot and quick, devoid of glamour but never of flavour. The story goes that the founders of Independent fell so in love with the raw, unassuming beauty of the dining concept, that they decided they needed to bring it to Dubai. Several years in the making, and now Kumo invites guests to drift away from everyday life; relax, pause, breathe, be present and purposeful, which we fail so easily to do in Dubai. The name is quite apt for this ethos.

THE SPACE

The heart of Kumo’s concept lies in getting the first step just right: the space. Set within a thoughtfully refurbished 1980s Jumeirah villa, the restaurant radiates

retro charm and intimacy. It’s a place where time feels slower, and a calming, nostalgic atmosphere takes over. The choice of location feels deliberate – a homely concept housed in an actual home – and the interiors echo that spirit with subdued tones and layered textures that channel both vintage and whimsical.

Think patterned tiles underfoot, printed sofas, marble countertops, and sturdy wooden chairs. Low ceilings create a cosy, enveloping warmth, while moody yellow lighting casts a soft, flattering glow. Pops of gold and red – in table accents and lamps – inject flair and a touch of funk. At Kumo, you don’t just feed your appetite –you feed all five senses.

THE FOOD

The food at Kumo is delightfully traditional with a contemporary twist, bursting with bold flavours that embrace colour, heat, and tang. Distinct matcha and sushi bars give the space added personality, while the warm, attentive service ensures you feel thoroughly looked after.

We sample a generous spread, but standouts include the yellowtail tiradito (Dhs61) – bright, zesty, and delicate, lifted by a yuzu truffle sauce; the tuna crispy rice (Dhs49) – a satisfying play of textures with crunch, softness, and a welcome spicy kick; and the hamachi nigiri (Dhs47) – a beautifully balanced bite of sweet, salty, and spicy with soy chilli and crispy garlic.

The kumo roll (Dhs65) lives up to its name – a bold fusion of shrimp tempura, avocado, and gochujang that’s an explosion of flavour.

And then there’s the wagyu tenderloin (Dhs310) – a premium cut, expertly cooked, and elevated by a chimichurriyuzu truffle combo that cuts through the richness with just the right punch of freshness.

Location: Kumo, Jumeirah

Contact: (600) 555551, @kumo

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Kumo brings a youthful energy to Dubai’s dining scene. Confident, stylish, and unapologetically flavour-forward. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not, and that’s exactly why it works.

BUNS OF ANARCHY

Sizzling new burger joints and bold culinary collabs are flipping the script on fast food across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. From ziplinefueled feasts to gourmet handhelds crafted by culinary royalty, here’s where to sink your teeth this summer

Pickl

Abu Dhabi’s burger fans have reason to celebrate too, as cult favourite Pickl has dropped a new location in Khalifa City. Known for its cheeky branding and highquality ingredients, this fast-casual chain continues to make noise in the regional burger game. The new 1,200 sq ft venue at Gardens Plaza seats 44, dishing up everything from fiery chicken sandos to decadent sides and desserts. With over 16 locations across the UAE, Pickl’s mission is simple: to bring quality, locally rooted fast food to every neighbourhood, and so far, they’re doing just that.

@pickl.mena

DIME

In true less-is-more fashion, the brains behind Rascals Deli, Apollo, and Za Za Slice are diving into burger territory with DIME, a cool, focused concept now flipping patties in Satwa. Here, the menu is razor-sharp: two burgers. That’s it. A classic cheeseburger, and a bolder version dressed in DIME’s signature house sauce. But don’t mistake minimalism for mediocrity. Every element is a result of months of testing and tweaking with buns baked in-house, pickles prepped from scratch, and no frozen shortcuts. Set in a diner-style space with retro booth seating, warm woods, and chrome details, DIME feels like the golden era of American burger joints. @dimesburger

Izu Burger

Topping the list of fresh openings is Izu Burger from acclaimed chef Izu Ani, now grilling at Time Out Market Dubai. Known for his impeccable standards and bold flavours, Chef Izu is reimagining what a burger can be, elevating it to an art form while keeping things comfortingly familiar. Expect rich Wagyu ribeye paired with Emmental, buttery in-house baked potato buns, and crispy corn-fed chicken with house-made sauces that are whipped up daily. Even plant-based eaters are in for a treat, with meatless options like umami-loaded portobello burgers that skip the faux meat trend in favour of real flavour. And because it’s Time Out Market, there are exclusive dishes you won’t find anywhere else, crafted just for this spot. @izuburger

BLA BLA BAR ABU DHABI

It’s new, it’s bold, and you need to make a reservation

During a day out in the capital, we booked ourselves a table at one of Abu Dhabi’s freshest new foodie arrivals: Bla Bla Bar (no relation to Bla Bla Dubai).

Set along the buzzing Yas Marina, the chic new venue first popped up during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2025, and now, it’s here to stay.

Service was warm and upbeat, setting the tone for what turned out to be a standout dining experience.

The interiors are vintage yet bold (with plenty of red to match the mood), paired with a modern, playful edge. Through the windows, we spotted the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island and a stretch of the Yas Marina Circuit prompting us to make mental notes to return during race week.

We kicked off the evening with a Gold Fashion (Dhs60) – a sparkling spin to an Old Fashioned, complete with a dramatic

gold spray added at the table. It was a clever touch of theatre that left flecks of gold floating in the air throughout the evening.

We dined as a mixed group of picky eaters and a full-on foodie, and to Bla Bla’s credit, every dish was a hit.

We began with the beef tartare (Dhs54), which leaned into Asian flavours with a spicy chilli kick. Unexpectedly, the cold spinach goma (Dhs26) was a surprising standout – creamy and crunchy, and in no way bitter. So good, we kept going back for more.

The lamb chop (Dhs68) was a Koreaninspired showstopper. The grilled-toperfection meat arrived in a fiery orange glaze, and paired with the Koreanstyle sauce, it was a balance of sweet and heat.

and served with an unagi sauce drizze. The result: buttery, melt-in-your-mouth fish with perfectly balanced flavours that even the fussiest diners couldn’t resist.

Other seafood dishes to try include the octopus (Dhs78) with yuzu kosho mayonnaise, which brings heat and an acidic flavour punch, and the sweet and tangy king crab (Dhs78).

Don’t miss the wagyu beef terrine (Dhs38) – skewered layers of juicy, fatty wagyu grilled and paired with a zingy sauce that melts in your mouth. And if chicken is more your thing, the chicken thigh (Dhs24) served with aji verde, a spicy Peruvian green sauce, is a solid choice.

But the seafood star of the night: The black cod (Dhs68) – a dish made popular by Nobu and notoriously hard to get right. But Bla Bla nails it. We’re told the fish is marinated over two days, the first in milk, the second in honey and then grilled

Despite running late, we couldn’t skip dessert. The dulce de leche ravioli was too intriguing to resist. Sugary little parcels are delivered to the table, filled with caramel-like goodness and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was cool, rich, and well worth the sprint to the car.

Bla Bla Bar Abu Dhabi, Yas Island, open daily from 6pm.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

For a bar, the food really delivers. With creativity, flavour, and flair in every dish, Bla Bla Bar is a must-try.

CULTURE // ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Soul singer Arqam Al Abri

Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations – these are just a few of the legends who shaped soul music. With roots in gospel, rhythm and blues, the genre carries strong associations and even stronger expectations. But prepare to have those expectations upended - Arqam Al Abri is here to challenge the preconceptions of what a soul singer looks and sounds like.

We stumbled upon singer Al Abri during a random doomscroll on Instagram and were blown away by his voice. We watched as the Emirati/Omani gentleman, who was born and raised in Dubai, effortlessly belted out Use Somebody by Kings of Leon.

Dressed in a navy-blue kandura and a white ghutra, the Emirati soul singer easily evoked goosebumps. And clearly, it’s a common feeling, because the singer has over 60,000 followers on social media, and every comment was nothing but praise.

We just knew we had to reach out to him to get to know the man behind the stunning voice.

When asked about his inspiration, Al Abri tells us he grew up in a house full of music. “My dad was a musician and had a massive music collection that we used to listen to. Music from legends such as Elvis, James Brown, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and more. We used to sneak into his room to listen to his music and I think that inspired us.” The singer also shares that his first memory of music is hearing his father sing.

When asked when he realised he could sing in that way, he laughed and said “sing like what?” However, he added he had no formal training and had a voice coach for just a couple of weeks.

It’s a constant learning curve, Al Abri admits. “I like to think I learn from every musician I’ve jammed with - from guitarists and keyboard players to drummers and singers. Every rehearsal, every performance is a lesson.”

Other singers who strongly influenced him include his own brother Abri, and other prominent names in the soul singing business including Sam Cooke, Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is an album Al Abri tells us he can listen to on repeat.

When asked if he faced any challenges being a soul singer in the UAE, Al Abri shared “The early days were difficult, I can’t complain though. Challenges are what makes you who you are.”

However, it looks like his hard work and dedication has paid off, because he has not only performed in some top venues here in the UAE, he also sang alongside internationally acclaimed pianist, Lang Lang.

When asked if being Emirati influences his music, he said “To

a certain extent, I add some elements of our music into my songs. I’ve sampled the Ayala in one of my songs Towards the Light slipped in some Oud into another original Leaving, and I often perform live with an amazing Oud player - Nezar Omran.”

Al Abri also writes his own songs which the world can listen to on Spotify and Apple Music. According to the singer, he is hoping to do more to merge Khaleeji music and soul music in his next EP (extended play).

And it looks like his dreams will soon become a reality, because Al Abri happily shared that he was “fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Ministry of Culture to produce and EP.” He added, “It will be a fusion of Emirati/Khaleeji music and soul musicaround four or five songs.’ He is working on a few campaigns and is excited to share them with us soon.

Al Abri said that he was fortunate enough to sustain himself through his music during the Covid-19 lockdown when he was unsure of his decision to leave his job, he wrote a song called Heavy. “It starts off fairly sad, but then becomes more hopeful and determined towards the end. It’s also the first song where I played guitar on my own track.”

When asked what’s something that people might be surprised to learn about him, he chuckled quietly and shared, “I am fairly reclusive… very demure… very mindful…” He also shared that one of his favourite songs to perform is Creep by Radiohead. “It’s such a beautiful song. For someone like me that isn’t necessarily comfortable being around a lot of people, I can relate with the song.”

“It’s been an incredible journey to be able to do something that, I hope, is able to touch people and make a decent income from,” he said. However, when he is not dabbling in music, Al Abri unwinds by spending time with his cats.

For emerging artists in the region, Al Abri has one simple piece of advice: “Find out who you are. It’ll show in your music.”

F1 REVIEW

IA little less conversation, a little more action, please

’m a relatively new F1 fan – and no, it didn’t start with Drive to Survive, and I didn’t fall for Charles Leclerc’s jawline. My fandom began with research, old race replays, and a crash course in everything from understeer to the total number of people in the pit crew and their jobs. Why? For work. I was covering the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for What’s On and wanted to understand the basics: from drivers and teams to formation laps and tyre strategies.

Long story short: I got hooked. Now? No plans on race weekends, errands done before all sessions, and eyes glued to every lap. I’m a Max Verstappen fan (yes, really), but also a proud Tifosi. And lately, Lando

Norris is quietly creeping into my top tier. (We can debate the politics of that fandom triangle later.)

Honestly, I didn’t even know about the F1 movie until a few months ago. But when I heard it was three years in the making, co-produced by Lewis Hamilton – a seven (okay, eight…) time world champion – I was sold.

So, is this really Formula 1… or just Fast & Furious with carbon fibre?

The first red flag, however, came early. At a special screening for drivers in New York, Carlos Sainz (now driving for Williams) said: “I’ll just say – for the pure F1 fan, be open-minded to Hollywood F1 films…”

Uh oh.

With Sainz’s words echoing in my head, I found myself in front of the big screen. Open-minded, Aarti… open-minded, I reminded myself.

The lights went out pretty quickly, and I was hooked from the starting line.

We meet Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a former F1 driver sidelined by a devastating crash. These days, he’s bouncing between odd racing gigs, but when a struggling F1 team offers him a wildcard comeback, he

hesitates – then agrees, one last shot at glory.

It’s a simple story — far easier to follow than the layered drama I had to untangle while learning the motorsport, and very Hollywood. But that’s good news for non-F1 fans, because it’s straightforward and easy to digest.

There are certain things I could push past – his age on his return to the grid (likely older than Alonso, and that’s saying something), for one. But also the, erm, multiple infringements during the race that would’ve had the FIA making it rain – not with prize money, but with penalty points.

And one continuity gripe that stood out: these cars were apparently running on rocket fuel, because they kept reaching the hairpin (Turn 5 at Yas Marina) in under 15 seconds – repeatedly.

While F1 clearly belongs in the ‘action’ genre, I found myself craving more ontrack drama.

But maybe that’s just the adrenaline junkie in me.

That said, the realism of the racing scenes – shot using groundbreaking technology – definitely gripped me. The speed, the sound, the adrenaline… it was all captured so perfectly, it genuinely felt like I was watching a real race. So real, in fact, that my eyes kept flicking left, instinctively searching for the timing tower. And Hayes’ POV behind the wheel really puts you right in the action.

I can’t not mention the score. Hans Zimmer delivers, as expected – but it felt underused. As a fan of his epic, soulstirring compositions, I kept waiting (and wanting) for that goosebump-inducing moment.

What’s On verdict

This film gripped my attention like a set of perfectly warmed Pirelli softs – not the C6s though, because if you’re keeping up with, as Leclerc states on Drive To Survive ‘the Kardashians of Formula 1’, you’ll know those didn’t exactly win fans.

It’s not without faults, but it’s highoctane, well-acted, and for the most part, respectful to the sport. And whether you’re in it for the data, the drama, or the drivers, it’s worth a trip to the grid.

Ahmedia Heritage Guesthouse

This guesthouse is the combination of three Emirati homes restored to all its traditional glory and converted into a heritage stay experience. Technically, this is a boutique hotel and one that offers the true taste of Emirati hospitality, customs and the way of life. The space has a stunning, entirely old-timey entrance and courtyard surrounded by a gallery, dining and seating areas. Like many of the heritage hotels and traditional stays here, the richness of the culture is fused with all the comforts and amenities a modern traveller seeks. Ahmedia might be the most traditional of them all and located in a prime spot close to all the major attractions of old Dubai – the traditional Spice Market, Gold Souk and Dubai Creek.

BEAUTIFULLY BOUTIQUE

In for 2025: boutique hotels. These unique, mostly heritage experiences are worlds away from the large, lavish, luxurious properties Dubai is known for – and they are a must-try.

Arabian Boutique Hotel

Arabian Boutique Hotel takes the history of the land it stands on, and wraps it up with a pretty bow for the present. By hotel standards, it’s boutique, but by residence standards, it’s massive, and this massive Emirati-style mansion with a courtyard, multiple rooms, terraces and quiet walkways once belonged to one man – Thani bin Abdullah Al-Rumaiti, a dignitary and figure of influence in the country. The design is entirely traditional and authentic, featuring Emirati construction, with air towers, awnings, wooden doors with bolt locks, double pane windows and raised sofas. @arabianboutique.hotel

Beach Walk Boutique

Located in the heart of Umm Suqeim, this property is far from luxurious or lavish, but it’s cute, quaint and cosy. The 21-room hotel is just a few steps away from Jumeirah Beach, and brings together the elements of tradition, history and art with bits of modernity to create a unique experience. The decor has all the traditional markings – natural fabrics, folkloric patterns, unrefined woods and woven rattan – giving it a rustic appeal. As for amenities, there’s a pool, a spa, and buffet breakfast.

XVA Art Hotel

This one is for all the art lovers. An art-oriented salon is built on the bones of a historical building, with the wind towers and large shaded courtyards hidden in a prime location –at Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. The space combines art and heritage with a rich cultural programme and offers 15 individually designed suites or rooms, an award winning restaurant, three wind towers, two courtyards, and a sultry lounge. It’s all very peaceful, serene and artsy.

Banyan Tree Spa

Set on the edge of Bluewaters Island, Banyan Tree Dubai is home to one of the city’s most design-forward new spa spaces. It swaps the brand’s usual darker tones for light, airy textures, all curved architecture, sandy marble and a corridor bathed in natural light that leads you into a state of calm before your treatment even begins. The treatment menu covers everything from Balinese massages and deep scrubs to herbal facials and long, ritualstyle sessions that feel like a reset. The standout? The Rainforest Experience: a full hour in your own private space with a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and tropical shower, just for you. Total silence. Total solitude.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental

Step inside one of Dubai’s most refined spa spaces

Some days, the only thing that makes sense is checking out – of your inbox and your brain when it’s running like a browser with 37 tabs open. This is your permission slip to opt out – for your mind, body, and that part of you that needs a break from everything. And when you’re ready to fully unplug, enter The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Jumeirah – spacious, quiet, and designed with pure stillness, like a full-on reset button.

A welcome that sets the tone Walking into The Spa feels like entering another frequency – the air is scented beautifully, the music is mellow, the voices are low, and the lighting is dim. You instantly feel like you’ve stepped off the grid and into this sacred, silent zone that makes scrolling your phone feel... inappropriate.

What’s inside

Everything in the design is elegant, with minimal yet warm interiors and a flow that invites you to fully let go, in a space that spans over 2,000 square metres. Just off the entrance, there’s a small boutique with a curated edit of womenswear, fragrances and skincare – well-chosen pieces that match the vibe of the space.

The facilities alone could fill your entire spa day: there’s a Vitality Pool, a deeply detoxifying Steam Room and Sauna, and a Relaxation Lounge with tepidarium chairs. There’s also a dedicated Hammam suite, nine treatment rooms (including two for couples), and even a VIP suite for when you want to go all out.

The treatments

If you’re here to release the tension, the Blissful Marma Massage (60 min, Dhs750) is a solid go-to. It’s all about aligning the body’s energy points using Marma therapy and chakra balancing. It’s the kind of massage that leaves you feeling physically lighter and mentally clearer. For skin that’s looking dull or tired, the Bio Lift & Bio Light Facial (90 min, Dhs1,250) uses microcurrent tech to lift and tone, while LED therapy tackles pigmentation and boosts collagen. It’s one

of those results-driven facials where you actually leave with a visible glow.

The spa also offers advanced and holistic facials, skin-boosting shots, and several signature therapies tailored to your specific needs on the day. You’ll also find other types of massages and skincare treatments to choose from, along with dedicated services for hair, nails, and skin health – all handled with the same care and attention to detail the Mandarin Oriental is known for.

The robe moment

Post-treatment is where the magic unfolds. The relaxation lounge is a beautifully designed, dimly lit, whisper-quiet, teasipping space with private cocoon chairs to keep you in the zone. Herbal tea, light snacks, ambient music – it’s the ultimate soft landing.

Verdict

If your idea of wellness means quiet luxury, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental is a space that’s been carefully considered from start to finish. The energy, the design, the service, the treatments – they’re all in sync. If you’ve been thinking about taking a break, cancelling your plans without feeling bad about it – this is the place to do it.

Summer, sweat and serotonin

Save these hacks to make your summer movement more mindful…

As summer comes around, life in the UAE changes. We’re transforming our routines to fit around the soaring temperatures but one thing that needs to remain a constantthe need to stay active. Movement is a non-negotiable, equipping our bodies with the armour they need to pull through this season, but of course, the way you go about it needs to change as well.

We sat down with Poppy and Sam, founders of NutriFit Coaching, to learn all about the best ways to move your body this summer. Poppy is a sport nutritionist (MSc) and level 4 personal trainer with a passion for female health and hormones, while Sam specialises in strength and conditioning, and is a nutrition specialist, working with everyone from everyday athletes to professionals

generally more tired, dealing with more heat and dehydration?

Outdoor runs are pretty much out of the question and so incline treadmill intervals, strength training sessions in airconditioned gyms are the way to go. It’s still important to get some vitamin D in and so short outdoor walks and some outdoor swimming is recommended but one must be mindful of the UV rays. If you find your energy flagging during these hotter months, the key is to prioritise consistency over intensity.

What are some sports you would recommend in this season and why?

new activities like indoor circuits, reformer pilates, spin classes, yoga , offering a change of pace in cooler environments, and join platforms like Privilee or ClassPass to try different indoor classes.

Can you give us some tips, nutritionwise, on how to best nourish our bodies for the extreme heat?

Proper nutrition and hydration are vital in the extreme heat. Choose lighter, refreshing meals such as grain bowls, cold pasta salads, and yoghurt with fresh fruit to stay nourished without feeling weighed down. Incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and tomatoes, which provide water and antioxidants. Electrolytes are crucial since sweating causes sodium loss adding moderate salt to meals or using electrolyte supplements (300 to 1000mg sodium per litre) helps maintain balance. Carbohydrates remain essential as your body’s main fuel, so include them around workouts for sustained energy and recovery.

For a quick, nutrient-rich recovery smoothie, we have to recommend our favourite post-workout shake: chocolate protein powder blended with two dates, one tablespoon of peanut butter, 250ml milk, ice, and a sprinkle of cacao nibs. It’s refreshing, packed with protein, natural sugars, healthy fats, and antioxidants.

What are some tips you can give specifically to parents to help them safeguard their children’s health while also keeping them active during a vacation?

What are some workouts you would recommend to people in the UAE during summertime, if they are

Spinning and swimming are excellent ways to maintain cardio, though it’s important to be mindful of sun exposure during swimming sessions. Playing indoor padel with friends can also be a fun, social way to stay active. If running or hiking feels tough in the heat and you’ve lost your mojo, use these months as an opportunity to explore

Parents should encourage daily family movement, whether it’s morning walks, pool play, or indoor activity sessions. Making hydration fun like offering infused waters, making homemade ice pops or using reward charts can motivate kids to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Easy-to-grab, protein-rich snacks help keep their energy levels steady. Luckily, the UAE is packed with great options like indoor soft plays, gymnastics or parkour classes, dance lessons, and more.

RADIO 2 IN THE PARK

August 21 to 24

Essex, England

Treading a fine line between cool and cheesy, this feelgood festival in England features a line-up of huge names (hello Bryan Adams) sprinkled with kitsch acts from yesteryear (please welcome Kid Creole and the Coconuts!). Set in south-east England, Radio 2 In the Park is a late summer blast of pop and indie nostalgia that, thanks to the pull of the popular BBC radio station, has been able to secure pop acts such as Sophie Ellis Bextor, Belinda Carlisle, Suede, Soul II Soul, Stereophonics, Jessie J and Anastacia. Bryan Adams kicks off the Saturday night, followed by hairy rockers Def Leppard on Sunday. Look out also for Marti Pellow from Wet Wet Wet. All together now, “I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes…” bbc.com

Those who helped Untold Dubai’s 2024 debut to make its mark included Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Tiesto. Joining the line-up of more than 100 artists underneath the Al Wasl Dome were Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs and Steve Aoki. Event organisers say, “Untold Dubai is evolving, we’re coming back in November 2025 to bring you the future of festivals. SOUNDSTORM

December 11 to 13

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

December 4 to 7

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Such is the fervour that surrounds the Grand Prix gigs in Abu Dhabi that we sometimes forget there’s quite an important car race that comes before them. This year, the juggernaut entertainment event roars into the capital with a quartet of massive names. Benson Boone, the breakout star of recent years, turns the key on Thursday night, before tossing the keys to Post Malone on Friday. Putting the pedal to the metal on Saturday are rock icons Metallica, before Katy Perry takes the chequered flag on Sunday night with a colourful circus of eye-popping costumes, catchy hits and on-stage drama. yasmarinacircuit.com

When a festival is able to book Eminem and have him emerge from a coffin wearing a hockey mask and clutching a chainsaw, you’re probably doing something right. One of the world’s most ambitious music festivals, Soundstorm returns to Riyadh for another blockbuster edition in December. Attended by more than 200,000 people across three days, Soundstorm 2024 drew A-list names such as David Guetta, Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, Armin van Buuren, Linkin Park and Camila Cabello plus Arabic stars like Amr Diab, Mohamed Hamaki, Abdul Majeed Abdullah, and Nassif Zeytoun. Expect another parade of giant acts later this year with lasers, pyrotechnics and speakers bigger than your apartment. mdlbeast.com

STAYCATION REVIEW:

Anantara Qasr

Al Sarab

Get lost in the dunes

If you’ve ever fantasised about getting a proper break from the chaos of city life and disappearing into the desert, let us point you in the direction of Anantara Qasr Al Sarab.

Tucked away in the heart of the Empty Quarter, which is the world’s largest sand desert, this resort is as remote and magical as it gets. After a three hour drive from Dubai and a two hour drive from Abu Dhabi, you’ll find yourself surrounded by endless dunes, where the only thing you’ll hear are the birds chirping.

The resort itself feels like something out of a movie. Think rustic courtyards, Arabian lanterns, and private terraces that open up to nothing but rolling sand as far as the eye can see. No traffic, no emails, no deadlines – just sun, sand, and pure peace.

We checked into a one-bedroom pool villa, and truth be told, we could’ve happily stayed in there the entire trip. With a private pool, a sun-drenched terrace with a cabana, and interiors that blend Bedouin

charm with five-star luxury, it was its own little slice of paradise. Morning dips, sunset views, and complete privacy really transports you into your own world.

We couldn’t resist exploring a little though, and we began with the Polaris dune buggy experience. Picture flying over huge golden dunes with the wind in your face, it was thrilling, wild and an unforgettable way to explore the desert. If that kind of adrenaline rush doesn’t seem like something you’d fancy, there are lots of activity options to choose from that are a little bit slower paced, like camel trekking, horseriding, or archery. For the night owls, these activities can be done under the cover of darkness too.

To balance things out, we booked a couples massage at the Anantara Spa, and only one word describes the experience: bliss. The spa has a serene spot in the

resort, and from the moment we walked in, everything slowed down. The treatment room looks directly onto the dunes too, so you can stare out and drift into a desert-induced daydream, which we recommend. When it comes to dining, the food is as amazing as you’d expect. Whether you’re having breakfast with a view of the dunes, or enjoying a candlelit dinner under the stars, the setting does half the work. The new Mediterranean restaurant, Amanie, is a must visit for either lunch or dinner and Suhail, another great restaurant, served up a seriously good steak alongside panoramic desert views. You can also arrange private dining right by your villa, just you, a chef, and the quiet hush of the desert.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, an off-grid adventure, or just a serious detox from the city buzz, Anantara Qasr Al Sarab is a great choice. This isn’t just a stay, it’s a proper escape. And trust us, once you’re out there, you’ll forget the city even exists.

Verdict: When can we move in? No seriously, we need a villa of our own, forever!

Through my eyes

Dani Wilson Naqvi

Favourite hotel

Each month, we ask a local UAE legend about their favourite places to eat, shop and explore around the emirates. But for this travel special, we’re going global. So we’ve tapped Dani Wilson Naqvi (@daniwilsonnaqvi), luxury travel designer and founder of Unique Family Travels (@uniquefamilytravel), for her favourite spots worldwide. As a travel specialist who’s ticked 55 countries off her bucket list, she’s well equipped to share the best places on the planet for all vacation styles.

Bisate Lodge in Rwanda is one of the most incredible hotels – so much so that it actually made me cry. The story behind it is very empowering as it was built by the local villagers. Its located in Volcanoes National Park, close to where you can trek with the gorillas. Aside from that, I love Nihi Sumba on Sumba Island in Indonesia, Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi in the Maldives for the Robinson Crusoe experience, Gleneagles for a country retreat in Scotland, and Belmond Splendido in Portofino for a romantic couples’ break. @bisatelodge, @nihisumba, @soneva, @thegleneagleshotel, @belmondsplendidomare

Under-the-radar destination

Raja Ampat in Indonesia, known as ‘The Last Paradise on Earth.’ We went as a family sailing around the islands for 10 days. From diving and snorkelling with manta rays, to hiking the untouched islands, it was raw and beautiful. The team set up beach days and dinner on private sandbanks, we kayaked around islands and relaxed on the most incredible boat, which had 15 staff to assist with every need. Easily one of my bucket list moments.

Top staycation spot

I love The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert for family trips as we enjoy the desert activities and get to explore RAK with unique experiences, such as the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp & ziplining across Jebel Hafeet. Another favourite of my family is Atlantis The Royal, as the family can enjoy Aquaventure from morning to night, there’s an endless choice of mouth-watering restaurants, and lots of water activities. @ritzcarltonalwadidesert, @atlantistheroyal

Bucket list family trip

A safari in Africa is a must for all families. The most incredible safari experience I had was in Botswana in the Okavango Delta where we canoed in the Okavango and witnessed many truly wonderful sights. For first-timers, I would recommend Kenya. I work with many luxury lodges that are more private and located in private conservancies, so you get to escape the crowds and have a more up-close experience.

A destination everyone should visit

Cape Town, South Africa. There is something magical about this city. From the amazing hikes to the spectacular vineyards, driving the Garden Route to Hermanus to whale watch, and visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach – the vibe in Cape Town is unmatched.

Discovering the alluring duality of Red Sea’s crown jewels

Desert Rock Shebara

The sun is setting behind a dramatic backdrop of commanding, craggy mountain peaks. A DJ spins chilled beats under a constellation of spotlights. Well-heeled guests sip cocktails out of fancy glassware on an alfresco terrace. But this isn’t the French Alps, nor a hip new spot on the Adriatic. This is Desert Rock, the newest addition to the Red Sea’s luxury hotel scene. On Saudi Arabia’s northwest coast, the Red Sea project is pioneering the Kingdom’s tourism transformation. And while island resorts will dominate this breathtaking new destination, Desert Rock is one of two inland sites that frame the striking desert landscape. Twenty minutes after leaving the airport, we find ourselves walking the steps towards Desert Rock’s welcome pavilion, the voice of one of the local villagers echoing through the speakers that line the way. We sip a fruity local pomegranate juice before being whisked away in a buggy up a hill, and as the rock faces that guard the way fall behind us, the true majesty of Desert Rock reveals itself like a dramatic curtain raiser. The Oppenheim Architecturedesigned resort is spread over 30,000 square metres, with rooms and restaurants carved out of the extraordinary mountains and set on clifftops. It’s all dramatic, daring and beautifully intentional, spaces melding seamlessly into one another.

At the heart of the resort, warm and welcoming social spaces nod to the wadi’s historic significance as a gathering place for Bedouin villagers and travellers. For the ultra-luxury traveller the experience is elevated, with a well-stocked library, listening room complete with 400 vinyl’s, plus Basalt – a venue that serves breakfast and lunch by day, and transforms into an Indian restaurant by night. Adjacent, the resort’s inviting pool is lined with plush loungers, although we rarely encounter more than a handful of guests here. Despite the resort being near full when we check in, it doesn’t feel it. The sprawling nature of Desert Rock means the 60 villas and suites are all dotted across different cliffs and rocks. Nabatean-inspired villas gaze out over the local landscape, while show-stopping cave suites cut out of the massif are arguably among the world’s most unique hotel rooms. Our own cliff hanging villa is calm and minimal in aesthetic, luxuriously enhanced with

a temperature-controlled pool that gazes out over the rocks, a freestanding tub and crisp Frette linens. But it’s the little extras that make this stay special. A complimentary mini bar of gourmet snacks, Palatino hats and beach bags to take away, and eye patches left at turn down. Days can be filled with as much or as little as you like. Simply cycling around the winding pathways on electric bikes is immensely freeing, the wind rushing behind you as you uncover a corner of the resort you’ve not yet found. To further encourage reflection and rejuvenation, the Desert Rock spa is a haven of calm, inspired by the wadi it’s located in. We find ourselves here for a pampering massage one afternoon, and again for a yoga class the following morning. Both experiences are blissfully calming, Amara gold oil pressed soothingly into our skin during the massage, a gentle flow of yoga poses and breathwork leaving us calm and centred during the private yoga class.

But beyond holistic wellness guests can explore myriad culinary, adventure and cultural experiences, all laced with Saudi Arabian heritage in a way that breathes life and soul into everything. We drive with Ivan, a longtime Saudi Arabian resident who runs the resort’s Akun Adventure Centre, as he shares stories about nearby villages, wildlife, and the area’s history. Five minutes later, we’re suited up, helmets on, racing across the rugged desert terrain Dune style on an electric ATV with our local guide. We spot lizards, camels, and the footprints of wild dogs on our exhilarating drive, and it’s hard to believe 90 minutes has passed

when we return to the centre. The adventure continues that night, when, after a dinner at Nyra, the massif-facing restaurant of Michelin-pedigree chef Osman Sezenger, we head upstairs for stargazing. Local resident Anwa leads us through an astronomy session with infectious interest, sharing stories from childhood that ignited a passion for stargazing. We admire the craters of the moon, we stretch to see the rings of Jupiter, and even master a glance at the red-tinged face of Mars. The next morning, as we say goodbye to Desert Rock, we’re struck by how brilliantly it showcases its own style of luxury – less about excess, all about essence, where guests come away with not just memories, but a sense of meaning.

Visually, it’s the perfect juxtaposition to Shebara, the second stop on our Red Sea tour, located a 45-minute boat ride from the mainland. The strikingly futuristic orbs – the resort’s overwater villas – loom into view long before our boat glides to the jetty, their dazzling silver cases getting more hypnotising the closer we get. We’re greeted with cold towels and fresh juice, before being whisked to our villa for check-in by a private host. The resort is split into two parts: the orb-lined boardwalk and an expansive island where many of the facilities are located. On land, a collection of beach villas are discreetly nestled into landscaped gardens,

opening up onto a private stretch of beach, but we’d pick the overwater villas every time for the all-out glamour. The Shaun Killadesigned resort rejects lines, so everything is wonderfully curvaceous, each villa designed to look like a bubble of water rising to the surface. Inside, spaces are just as spectacular. Soft and soothing, a crescent-shaped curtain glides away in the living room to reveal an infinity pool and sunken seating area. Everything is ergonomically designed so that the practical is neatly concealed, letting the design wow factor shine. An automatically opening silver minibar has already caused quite the social media stir, and a quadruplesize experience shower with mood-changing lighting is another futuristic touch. But it’s with a sunrise dip in our infinity pool that we really feel the resort’s immersive beauty, the water from the pool seemingly meeting the waters of the Red Sea below.

Mere hours after arriving, we race from our villa to Solera, the bar adjacent to the chic adults-only pool, in time to catch the beautiful golden light dip behind the horizon, leaving a trail of sorbet hues in its wake. We listen to catchy DJ beats and sip on an alcohol-free martini, drinking in the stretching views. A short stroll away, overwater dining is best enjoyed at the upscale Japanese restaurant, Iki.Roe, where we pick a table indoors to watch the chefs at work, tucking into platters of sushi and tender steak perfectly seasoned and cooked just the way we’d like. After dinner, a buggy is waiting to take us back to our villa, the intuitive team already aware of our villa number without having to ask.

With its impossibly clear waters and rainbow-hued coral reef, snorkelling is a must at Shebara. So the following morning, we head straight from breakfast to WAMA, the watersports centre, to pick up our equipment, returning to the villa armed with a handy map and expert tips on the best places to go. At the far end of the boardwalk, there’s a platform that leads to one of the most vibrant reefs at the resort, but we choose to simply descend the stairs from our overwater villa and explore the underwater world below. We spot fish in every shade and corals of canary yellow and Nemo orange, and it’s only when we realise our skin has wrinkled in the water that we decide to return to land.

Departing Shebara feels like leaving another world behind, and as the frothy surf trails behind us and the resort shrinks further out of view, it’s impossible not to reflect on the majesty of both resorts. The design, gastronomy and service standard are all standout, but it’s more than that. Desert Rock and Shebara offer a kind of luxury that’s rich with meaning, deeply connecting guests to the location and heritage of Saudi Arabia in a way that leaves a lasting impact.

PALACES, THE PAST AND PRIDE IN

Patiala

How I ended up in Patiala was a complete twist of fate. Bound for the Himalayas with a suitcase packed full of thermals, my flight was cancelled due to poor weather and soon I was driving through rolling fields of rice wherever I looked, expanding to the very end of where my naked eye could reach. They say spontaneous plans are perhaps the best kind, and my time spent in this quaint crown jewel of Punjab’s lavish legacy reaffirms my faith in the existence of destiny.

Like many cities on the Indian map, Patiala is not exactly top of the bucket list lot of holiday destinations – the lines in Schengen visa offices are long and treacherous, but the charms of European civilisation and Balearic island parties never wear off. Only if one comes searching for the stories told within the honeycomb lanes of this city does one uncover – beyond these old, faded buildings, small, bumpy roads and tight-knit bazaars – a tale of a kingdom, gone, but never forgotten.

THE HISTORY

The roots of Patiala can be traced back to one Maharaja Baba Ala Singh, a visionary who came to this land and felt compelled to establish a civilisation. As such, a fort, the Qila Mubarak, was built in 1763, back then the centre of any settlement’s universe, and Patiala sprung to life. The name comes from

Discover a glittering marriage of history and hospitality in this quiet corner of Punjab

two places – patti, meaning a 360-degree strip, referring to the all-encompassing physical and social presence of the fort; and ala, meaning home or living space, and also from the name of Maharaja Baba Ala Singh.

Nestled inside one of the four enclaves of this Qila Mubarak is Ran Baas, The Palace, a Park Hotels and Relais & Châteaux property, a stunning restoration of the space where the wives of Maharja Bhupinder Singh once resided. That is where the name comes from – rani, meaning queen; and baas, meaning living quarters. A boutique stay with 35 suites, the hotel lies at the centre of this entire historical escapade I’m going to chart for you, living it, breathing it, and immortalising it within its ethos. Here, I came to experience some of the most sincere, thoughtful hospitality I have ever encountered. A conscious effort is made to give the guests the full Punjabi experience: we are welcomed with pomp and show, complete with a parade, a dhol, humbling folded hands and the echoes of sat shri akal.

While much has changed in life around

the monument from 300 years ago, a lot of it is still frozen in time, like a postcard. Anthony, a manager at the Ran Baas, The Palace, tells me that some of the vendors who have been trading in the surrounding bazaar since the time of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh still pay rents of 50 to 100 rupees for their shops – equivalent to Dhs2 to Dhs4 in today’s world.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh took this modest, albeit expansive, dwelling from the time of his ancestors and filled it with treasures that far exceed the wealth of many royal families around the world. He was an inimitable personality, some of the oldest locals tell me, with a net worth competing only with the Nizams of Hyderabad and an ego fit for a king, further flourished by his posse of more than 20 Rolls Royce models, his 365 wives, his collection of medals, and his pushing penchant for all the finer things in life.

Today, the people of Patiala lead humble lives, driven by the salt of the earth and a pride in the past of their city that no one can take away from them. These regales of grandeur, opulence and luxury are locked away within the crumbling walls of the fort, and in modern India, the city is a part of the pulsating democracy like everywhere else in the country. But the mark of monarchy has yet to fade. For 15 years, the seat of this governance was held by Captain Amarinder Singh, an armyman and the reigning descendant of the dynasty of Patiala.

THE CULTURE

We pull into the city amidst sweeping farms of rice and towering, rust red brick kilns, seemingly some of the most lucrative sources of livelihood here – the state of Punjab contributes to about 9 to 12 per cent of India’s overall rice production, one of the highest in the country. Generational farming is a way of life, but so is the trade of their culture. Our tour around the central market of the city brings us to the doorstep of two of the most popular cultural exports of Patiala – the jutti and the phulkari work.

Sweety Singh has been running his namesake jutti store since 1947. A portly Sikh man with a permanent, powerhouse smile and a tender demeanour, he tells me his family came to Patiala from Pakistan during the Partition and bought this shop space to build their lives here. Sweety Jutti Store has been the same ever since – from the low roof to the signboard outside and the honest dedication to the craft. I’m overwhelmed by their hospitality, which I will relive over and over in the next few days, as he gently slides shoe after shoe on my feet with his own hands. In Patiala, daughters are taken very seriously, and I leave the store with a bag full of shoes and a tender familial connection.

Over at Jasprit Singh’s shop of phulkari fabrics, I am told this is also a family business, established in the 1950s and to this day, the store creates paid work for the women of Jasprit’s village. He rolls out dupatta after dupatta, in colours bright, bold and beautiful, adorned with mirrors, embellishments and sequins.

Phulkari is a traditional style of thread embroidery practised only in certain regions of Punjab. Our guide from the hotel, Rajveer, is a native of Bhatinda and tells me these fabrics are also an important symbol at weddings, often draped by the mothers and sisters of the bride and groom. Besides this, the city is also popular for the production of high-quality gud, or jaggery, and has a dedicated area of the

bazaar called gud mandi to produce this ingredient.

At Ran Baas, The Palace, the team immerse us into the local arts and music, and we spend our evenings on the terrace, which is the highest point of Patiala. We sip freshly brewed chai, nibble on Punjabi high tea, watch the sunset colour the sky pink, purple and blue, and are regaled by the musical strains of a pair of live Sufi performers – Mohit and Mohit, practicing their family craft – as well as stories from Deep Mohan Arneja, general manager, who connects with his guests as if they are family. On a different day, at brunch, a live Sitar performs soothing tunes as we dine on comfort specialities; and paan, a traditional Indian mouth freshener, is arranged on the slightest mention by our wonderful stay coordinator, Sonu.

In our room, the furnishings are a beautiful blend of traditional and contemporary, with massive arches, high ceilings, detailed engravings, ornate chandeliers, hand-painted motifs, geometric prints and lacey curtains that add romance to the entire affair.

A rich blue is draped everywhere, from the tiles to the bedding and beyond. This luxury matches all the other parts of the hotel, from the imposing, white façade, a stunning sight at nighttime, to the architecture, a fusion of Punjabi and Rajasthani design, to the grassy courtyards and the spa space, a converted part of the kitchen called the lassikhana.

THE MUST-VISIT SITES

The first stop on our tour of the city is the Moti Bagh Palace, a sprawling property over 100 acres of land, much of which now lays in disrepair. Enclosed within the walls of this palace is the Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors, built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh for pleasure, joy and relaxation. The building is said to house unimaginable frescoes and mirrors, and even the world’s largest collection of medals, a milestone achievement for the Maharaja. Outside, marble statues and fighting cannons dot the gardens, and across a now dried-up man-made lake, a replica of the Lakshman Jhula of Rishikesh bridges the gap. Also in that compound is the Banaras Ghar, a banquet hall where the Maharaja hosted more than 100 covers; and the smaller Moti Bagh Palace, currently the residence of Captain Amarinder Singh.

From there, we move on to the Gurudwara Shri Dukhniwaran Sahib. According to local tradition, supported by an old handwritten document preserved in the holy site, a dweller of the village of Lehal, where the gurudwara now stands, waited upon the ninth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur. He pleaded with him to rid his village of a serious and mysterious sickness, which had been their bane for a long time. The Guru did so, and the site where he sat down became the site of this shrine, hence the name dukh-nivaran, literally meaning eradicator of suffering. On this day, the shrine is filled with the faithful, showing up for their share of the healing properties the water is said to have. As soon as we step foot on the marble, a heavy downpour begins, and we’re drenched from head to toe in almost a symbolic moment.

THE FOOD

At Ran Baas, The Palace, we are served some incredibly flavourful vegetarian Punjabi fare, from millet kichdi drenched in ghee to pakoda kadi, butter-laden naans, grilled paneer, dahi kababs, baingan ka bharta and home-style daal, all of which we consume at the Patiala Bar, a moody lounge splashed in shades of purple and blue. One mention of a preference for halal meat, and the chef sources halal chicken for us, a rarity in Punjab, to whip up a home-style chicken curry for our last dinner – such is the attention to detail. We traverse the lanes of the local bazaars and discover some of the specialities, including pure, homemade lassi, perfectly refreshing for hot summer days, and a whole world of confectioneries we never knew about at Jaggi’s Sweets - another local, family-run business.

As we tuck into our last meal in Patiala, I am reminded of what I’m taking away from this place – the people, in every step of the way.

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT: CENTARA RAS FUSHI,

Maldives

On a first time visit to the Maldives, deputy editor Madie Murphy discovers a destination that’s about so much more than just lazing by the beach.

The Maldives has secured itself a reputation for white sand beaches, dreamy overwater villas, and long, languid days of doing… well, absolutely nothing. But what if we told you there’s a slice of this island paradise that keeps you on your toes in the best possible way?

This idyllic destination just a four-hour flight from the UAE is a paradisiacal spot for switching off and blissing out. But there’s another way to experience this Indian Ocean escape. Enter Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa, an adults-only haven that proves you can have a typical Maldivian, sun-soaked, relaxing escape without pressing pause on fun.

It’s a 20-minute speedboat transfer from Malé, which is quick but also wallet-friendly compared to seaplanes, and it’s one of the few resorts where getting there doesn’t eat up half your first day (or your budget).

The villas are stunning, especially the overwater ones with steps straight into the ocean, some sunrise views, some sunset views. If you don’t fancy that, they also have beach villas that lead directly onto your own slice of sandy paradise. Everywhere is walkable in this resort, so there’s no need for the hassle of calling for buggies or trying to find available bikes just to go to dinner.

The food

Centara Ras Fushi offers half-board, full-board and all-inclusive options, which makes for a more affordable way to do the Maldives. But this isn’t just buffet-and-go. Think à la carte dining across several restaurants, from Thai flavours at Suan Bua to fresh seafood at Oceans, and even Middle Eastern mezze with your toes in the sand.

And yes, there’s a beach bar with swings, cocktails, and DJ sets, perfect for those Instagrammable moments. And who says paradise can’t have a little party? Plus, the best spot, in our opinion, is the Viu bar, which is the most romantic spot to watch the golden sun dip behind the ocean, leaving rainbow pastel shades in its wake.

HOW TO GET THERE

A playground for grown-ups

Water babies, rejoice. Centara Ras Fushi is perched on some of the Maldives’ most colourful reefs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just curious about what lies beneath, the onsite PADI dive centre has something for you. Prefer to stay closer to the surface? There’s a water sports centre too with kayaking, paddleboarding, and even windsurfing.

There are beach movie nights under the stars, dolphin watching excursions, cooking classes and even an airconditioned E-Zone with a music library, video games, billiards and more.

If you do feel like slowing down, the award-winning SPA Cenvaree offers gorgeous treatments to relax you, bring your partner for a couple’s massage, or get a mani-pedi while taking in the calming surroundings of the spa that’s hidden in tropical greenery.

Rates: A one-night stay in a beach villa on bed and breakfast basis starts from Dhs722.

Verdict: No, you won’t be bored here. In fact, you might leave wondering how an island that’s barely a kilometre wide managed to keep you so delightfully busy.

Emirates, Flydubai, Air Arabia and Etihad all offer regular flights to the Maldives from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The cheapest fares in July are with Air Arabia from Sharjah, with one-way flights from Dhs823.

Amman, Jordan ABDULRHMAN ATARI MUSICIAN

When one thinks of Jordan, it’s easy for images of Petra, the Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea to spring to mind. But a few days in its vibrant capital are unmissable for exploring the diversity and creativity of the city. Jordan is increasingly becoming a space for music fans, with a diverse scene that blends traditional Arabic influences with contemporary global sounds.

We spoke to musician Abdulrhman Atari, once the lead guitarist of international band Atari. He now has his own musical project playing funk reggae tunes blended with Arabic beats.

What’s your favourite nightlife venue in Amman?

Bisharat Golf Club is a great nightlife venue to explore. By day, it’s a golf club which hosts family events, and at night, it transforms into a space for open‑air music and dance parties. International artists Lost Frequencies, Black Coffee and French electronic music artist Francis Mercier have performed here. For something different, there’s a cool new spot called The Promenade on Airport Road – a charming open air venue that hosts cultural shows, family events, band nights, DJs, and singers.

Where in Amman do you go to lift your spirits?

Jabal Al Lweibdeh (also spelt Weibdeh) – one of Amman’s oldest and most charming neighbourhoods. It’s a vibrant hub where history, culture, and creativity come together. To really feel the pulse of Amman however, head to Downtown for markets, street vendors, and historical landmarks.

Why do you love Amman?

I grew up here, so I love it. There are a lot of exotic places and activities perfect for individuals, families and friends.

Saudi Arabia’s vibrant coastal city on the Red Sea is charming and bursting with energy. It is home to UNESCO-listed Al-Balad district, striking contemporary art, and a dynamic food scene. Jeddah is a city where tradition meets transformation.

Tell us about a hidden foodie gem?

Pinch Bakery. A cosy dessert shop and café. Here you’ll find plenty of matcha, cute little cakes and sweet treats. The staff are also so lovely, and very accommodating.

How would you describe Jeddah?

Jeddah is like the California boho vibes of Saudi Arabia, while Riyadh is the New York City hustle and bustle of the Kingdom.

Can you describe the people of Jeddah in one sentence? They are some of the most chilled, welcoming, and lovely people I’ve ever met.

Why do you love Jeddah?

Everyone that visits Jeddah loves Jeddah! It’s peaceful, calm, relaxed, welcoming... Make sure you visit a homegrown concept store for clothes, and Basma Elkhereiji’s restaurant, Alieia – a Greek dining experience by the sea. Tell Betsy, the regularly visiting sea turtle, I said ‘Hi!’.

Muscat, Oman

OMAR AL-ZADJALI

PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER

If Oman finds its way onto your travel plans, you may head to the South to lush Salalah. However, its capital city, Muscat, is just as vibrant. A space where traditional Arabian architecture blends seamlessly with modern development, it’s home to a beautiful waterfront, historic forts and bustling souqs.

Where would you take someone to experience the heartbeat of Muscat?

This is an obvious one, Muttrah. There’s something quite special about walking along the Muttrah Corniche, driving to Qasr Al Alam Palace. Here, you will also find Muttrah Souq, a traditional market with spices, textiles, jewellery, and Omani handicrafts, making it a must-visit spot for experiencing authentic Omani culture.

What’s one local experience every traveller should try?

Going to the goat market in Nizwa on Friday at 6am. The hustle and bustle is something everyone must experience. Nizwa Fort at night is an incredible vibe. I really recommend an overnight stay at one of the hotels at the fort.

Where should one go to get an authentic food experience?

It would have to be Lahab Kitchen – a humble eatery where the portions are generous and the prices low. You can sit on the floor in a cosy booth while enjoying Gossy, a traditional Omani dish of slow-cooked lamb or goat. If you’re after a touch of elegance, I would have to say Kalabash Lounge. It’s an Iranian restaurant located up on a hill in Qurum, where you have lovely views of Muscat.

Cairo,

CAROLINE BERZI ARTIST

Cairo is a city of contrasts – where pharaohs’ tombs and thousandyear-old mosques stand beside bustling markets and modern highrises. It’s busy, it’s captivating, and bursting with character.

Tell us about a true hidden gem in Cairo.

I really enjoy visiting Downtown Cairo, especially Khan Khalil and the famous Moez street, which is filled with cultural heritage from its historical relevance to Islamic architecture. It’s a pedestrian zone packed with small shops and a very small restaurant, Naguib Mahfouz café, named after a famous Egyptian writer. If you get a chance to visit, you might be able to listen to Oud live music.

The best spot to go to soak in art?

The town of Zamalek is filled with art galleries very close to each other, if you are looking to see contemporary art. But I also like to visit the Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in Fostat in Cairo. It’s a must-see, if you want to look at the beauty of Pharaonic Hieroglyphs and the details of the art on tombs, statues and jewlery.

How would you describe the arts and culture sector in Cairo?

There is always something happening in Cairo like art fairs and international and local installations around the pyramids. Visiting Cairo allows you to be surrounded by arts and culture, you can visit the ancient pyramids, then go visit the new Grand Egyptian Museum and be amazed by the architectural infrastructure.

What’s your go-to spot in Cairo when you need inspiration, and why?

I usually like to go to greener areas in Cairo as I like to be inspired by nature. There are nice gardens in Zamalek, like the Fish Garden. I also like to go diving in the Red Sea. It is filled with corals and diverse fish – truly beyond words.

What’s a local saying or phrase that captures the spirit of Cairo?

There is a saying in Arabic

“Feeha haga helwa” which basically says “there is something nice about it,” meaning no matter where you go and what you do in Cairo there is always something that attracts you to it and back to it.

Beach chic

This summer’s essentials: a stretch of sand, great food, and forgetting what day it is.

From new openings and pop-ups to all-time coastal favourites, here’s where to spend the day – and maybe the night – if you’re hitting summer’s most treasured spots.

Verde Beach, Sardinia

Verde Beach, known for its stylish beach clubs in Paris, Saint-Tropez, and Dubai (with New York and Miami coming soon), has just touched down on Sardinia’s famous Emerald Coast. Accessible only by boat, this secluded cove offers natural beauty and refined design, where marble, macramé, nautical ropes, and teak wood create a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. Chef Kanchana Ranasinghe’s menu is a new take on Mediterranean classics with Riviera influences – think truffle pizza, lobster pacheri, yellowtail carpaccio, and Wagyu ribeye, all perfectly paired with fine wines and champagnes. International DJs bring the energy as the day goes on, turning relaxed afternoons into vibrant nights. @verde.sardinia

Luna Beach Club, Nyanyi

If you’re going to Bali this summer, make space for Luna. Set high above the coastline in Nyanyi, it’s one of the newest spots drawing a creative crowd. The space is all curves and bamboo, with a sculptural design that catches light and wind in unexpected ways. By day, it’s about long lunches, ocean dips, and a waterslide that drops straight into a hidden bar. As the sun shifts, so does the energy – DJs pick up the pace, the terrace fills, and the ocean turns gold. It’s part beach club, part art piece, and already a reason people are rewriting their Bali maps.

Gigi, Bodrum

After winning hearts in Dubai, Paris, and Saint-Tropez, Gigi Rigolatto has landed at Mandarin Oriental Bodrum. Think long, leisurely lunches, sunset drinks, and that laid-back vibe you’d jump on a plane for – now with sea views and private beach access. The menu sticks to rich Italian classics, while the Bellini Bar keeps the energy buzzing between aperitivo and dancefloor. There’s even a boutique onsite with Gigi’s signature beachwear and accessories. Designed by FrancoMexican architect Hugo Toro, the space reflects Italian style with French lifestyle touches – perfectly tailored for the Turkish Riviera.

@gigi_restaurant_bodrum

Jacquemus Beach Club, Monte-Carlo

Jacquemus has made its most sun-soaked move yet for summer 2025. Taking over Monte-Carlo Beach, the label’s signature energy hits the Mediterranean with a splash of banana yellow and graphic black-and-white stripes – turning the classic Riviera scene into a chic playground. From runway to shoreline, Jacquemus is no stranger to turning heads. Now, its beach club concept is stealing the spotlight in Monaco, offering a stylish escape where fashion and leisure collide. The Pool Café steps up its game with monochrome vibes that feel more like a statement than décor, while two pop-up boutiques bring Jacquemus’ beachwear and accessories right to the coast. Rooted in its French heritage, the brand’s aesthetic meshes perfectly with Monte-Carlo’s luxe, laid-back lifestyle. @montecarlobeach

COYA Beach, St-Tropez

New for summer 2025, COYA drops its first beach club on Pampelonne. The vibe? Barefoot with style: think sun-faded wood, hand-thrown ceramics, and terracotta everywhere. The menu highlights sea bass ceviche, lamb cutlets, and lobster with white gazpacho. Pisco gets its own dedicated bar – because this is COYA, of course. The soundtrack moves from mellow to movement as the sun shifts. Daybeds, DJs, and that golden St-Tropez light –that’s the all-day scene.

@coyasainttropez

Amante, Ibiza

Amante remains one of Ibiza’s most beloved beach clubs – and for good reason. Set along the cliffs of Sol d’en Serra and overlooking a quiet cove, its stunning sea views and cinematic calm remind you exactly why you return time and again. The vibe? It’s laid-back luxury – a serene escape from the island’s party pulse. Think cliffside dining, crystal-clear waters, and a Mediterranean-led menu that leans into Ibizan seafood. Standout dishes like lobster rice and chargrilled giant prawns bring just the right touch of Spanish flair. Cocktails land as photogenic as the setting, especially when golden hour rolls in.

Dishoom, Shoreditch, London

Dishoom in Shoreditch holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my husband Shadi and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, surrounded by the cosy charm of its Bombay-inspired interiors. Think warm lighting, vintage touches, and the comforting chatter of conversation around. There’s something incredibly wholesome about the food: the smoky grilled meats, buttery naan straight from the tandoor, the rich, slowcooked black daal that feels like a hug in a bowl, and the perfectly crisp fried okra that we couldn’t stop reaching for. Dishoom isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience - nostalgic, soulful, and warm. @dishoom

Gymkhana, London, UK

One place that stands out to me, even though I’ve only been there once, is Gymkhana, a two Michelin Star Indian restaurant in London that’s home to the best butter chicken and the best biryani. It’s the kind of cool you can’t put your finger on what makes it so special, but it is just so attractive as a venue. Also, my girlfriend is not a fan of tasting menus (which is what you get at most Michelin restaurants), so when I’m in London, I usually visit them alone. But Gymkhana is special because we’re able to order a la carte and can enjoy a Michelin experience together. It’s one of those restaurants that I want to go back to again and again.

To this day, nothing compares to my experience in Uruguay. I first got to know about this gem through Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and I was instantly hooked. Back in 2019 I was unbelievably lucky to be part of a course called 7 fires by Francis Mallmann, in Garzon – an old train station converted into a hotel and restaurant. We spent the best part of 3 weeks cooking with live fire right in the middle of the road across from the restaurant and also visiting the most amazing restaurants in idyllic locations, either by the beach or the plains, in the city or the countryside.

Lung King Heen offers exquisite seafood and dim sum by Executive Chinese Chef Chan Yan Tak. As the world’s first Chinese restaurant to earn three Michelin stars,I had the unforgettable privilege of attending an event in Hong Kong where Chef Chan Yan Tak personally prepared his signature crispy frogs legs with spicy salt for us – it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. I was even invited into the kitchen to cook alongside this legendary chef. Etxebarri is purity at its finest, it’s simplicity at it’s finest, it’s respect and passion towards one’s craft, respect for ingredients, respect to suppliers, respect in the simple art of cooking. All the ingredients come from around the restaurant – the cows are on top of the hill, the shrimp comes fresh from a certain local supplier, the milk comes from the cows. When I went, it was my wife and I’s honeymoon, and we drove from Madrid – it was a long but worthwhile journey. I had the chef - Bittor Arginzoniz – cookbook and I had it signed, and to see him in the flesh was like seeing Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, like meeting a culinary god. @asadorextebarrioficial

Since its opening in December 2014, the restaurant has earned 3 Michelin Stars and was recently named the Best Restaurant in the World for 2024. It pushes the boundaries of art, science, and creativity, delivering flawless execution with every dish. What truly set the experience apart was the warm, genuine hospitality, which elevated it beyond other world-class restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of dining at.

Concettina ai Tre Santi, Naples, Italy

On a long pizza tour of southern Italy, my son Sebastian and I fell deeply in love with Concettina ai Tre Santi deep in the Rione Sanità neighborhood of Naples. It remains the best meal of my life and the perfect blend of tradition and modernity in the food that I love most – pizza. We walked into Concettina as strangers and we walked out as family. It was a powerful expression of hospitality for young Sebastian and for me a lesson in blending youthful irreverence with the weight of history and its rich traditions. There’s room for both and a need for them to live in harmony. They do at Concettina just as they do at Marmellata, and for us it served as confirmation that what we had in mind already existed. @concettina3santi

THE RE-FIVE-AL OF

Destino

An Ibiza icon is reawakened with a touch of Dubai magic as two iconic hospitality brands come together for the reimagined Destino FIVE Ibiza

THE STORY

After creating its own league of high-octane hedonism, gourmet dining and lifestyle-driven hotel stays in Dubai, FIVE Hotels & Resorts acquired Ibiza’s Pacha Group in October 2023. This strategic expansion saw the Dubai-born hospitality brand snap up some of Ibiza’s most renowned icons, including Pacha nightclub, El Hotel Pacha, and Destino. While much of the Pacha-branded parts have remained the same, over winter 2024/25 Destino – the adults-only hilltop escape in Cap Martinet on the island’s east coast – has been transformed into Destino FIVE Ibiza, lacing Destino’s legacy and FIVE’s signature enigmatic touch into a new era for the hotel. Just days after opening, we checked in to check it out.

THE STAY

We’re greeted at check-in into a beautifully bold and modern lobby, flooded with natural light thanks to French doors lining either side, their blinds billowing in the welcome island breeze. To our left, the iconic Pacha shop and hostess desk for Playa Pacha – suitably adorned with a melted disco ball. To the other, check-in desks manned by friendly staff, many of whom are born and raised on the island, and all eager to welcome us. We’re greeted with a welcome drink of hierbas, a local island spirit, and quickly shown to our room.

Guest rooms are dotted throughout beautifully whitewashed casitas nestled within the hotel grounds. Some offer prime views of Playa Pacha’s inviting swimming pool – ideal if you want to be in the heart of the action. Our own room is nestled within the grounds, set a little further back to evoke a sense of boho-chic serenity. Inside the room, crisp linen sheets and spongy mattresses ensure that, no matter how many (or few) hours of sleep you get, they’re deep and restorative. A circular mirror above the bed and a not-so-mini minibar stocked with premium liquor are standout features that lean into the brand’s hedonistic reputation. FIVE Hotels’ eco effort is a welcome addition throughout, with plastic bottles replaced with recyclable Pacha water cans, and all the bathroom amenities are plastic-free. FIVE’s fluffy dressing gowns are the perfect accessory for getting ready for a night out, and a smart TV with Chromecast allows us to choose the soundtrack to each evening with ease.

THE DINING

While FIVE may have created its brand around high-octane events, it must also be credited for its impressive culinary offering. At Destino FIVE Ibiza, that translates into Cielo all-day dining restaurant and Playa Pacha, a luxe poolside spot where vibrant beats and Mediterranean flavours backdrop sun-drenched days under the Balearic sun. We spend lazy mornings at Cielo, where soulful acoustic sets and an in-house magician are welcome, surprise additions to breakfasts of fresh fruits, baked pastries and cherry sweets (an ode to the iconic Pacha symbol) from the continental buffet, and a la carte omelettes and acai bowls. Balmy Balearic afternoons are best enjoyed under the dappled shade of a cabana gazing out to the Mediterranean, or in the heart of the action with a lounger by the DJ booth at Playa Pacha. We sip glasses of Cava sangria, graze on fresh sushi rolls, padron peppers and tempura shrimp, and listen to resident DJs that play energetic sets right until the sun starts to set.

THE VERDICT

Bringing together the best bits from two renowned brands creates a stay that curates the perfect balance of thrill and chill.

UNVRS

Ravers in the 80s and 90s will know it as Ku Klub, while those who hit it up between the early noughties and pre-Covid will know it as Privilege. Either way, the world’s biggest nightclub is back – this time as UNVRS. Given a series glow-up by Ibiza heavyweights The Night League (of Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa), it features dazzling sculptures, a series of alfresco terraces, and out-of-this-world production befitting of residencies for big names like David Guetta and Fisher.

Japan is a country of contrasts. From ancient temples steeped in centuries of legends, to modern vending machines dropping everything from hot corn soup to the delights of yakitori in a can, this country of calm chaos is one of the safest and easiest countries to travel around.

While many of us carry postcards in our minds of iconic snapshots of Tokyo’s neon lights, snowcapped Mount Fuji or Kyoto’s geishas gliding past wooden teahouses, Japan offers a layered tapestry that blends tradition with innovation. Whether you’re planning to check that dream cherry blossom trip off your bucket list, taking the road less traveled during shoulder season, or exploring the countryside to savour cups of tea with monks, Japan is home to experiences unlike anywhere else.

With a variety of flight options from the UAE, Japan is accessible, and once there, it is very easy to navigate around for groups, families or solo adventure seekers. The Japan Rail Pass is essential when travelling between cities and must be purchased before arriving in Japan. This pass allows you hop

HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT TRIP TO

on and off most Japan Rail trains, including the Shinkansen (bullet train), allowing you to go from seeing the green blur of rice paddies through passing train windows, to the popular swirl of a cup of matcha being whisked in one of the back alleys of Tokyo – hassle free and in the blink of an eye.

Japan thrives on contradictions – it’s a country that is incredibly progressive and modern, while remaining fiercely traditional, frenetic and serene. Taking in the must-see sights, particularly on a first-time visit, will feed an Instagram fuelled appetite, but don’t be afraid to step off the regular tourist path – spend a night in a capsule hotel, belt out karaoke until the early hours of the morning, taste the strangest items on the menu, and learn to love a convenience food store (trust me, they are lifechanging)!

One word of advice on any trip to Japan, is to not rush. Embrace the quirks and lean into the whispers of locals, wander through the quirky villages, and if you stay here long enough or surrender to the current that will inevitably draw you back, you’ll notice the choreography in the rituals of the tea ceremony that match the falling drops on a commuters umbrella on a rainy morning. Every corner of the country offers unique theatre, and you will find yourself with a front row seat.

Rome, REVISITED

The Italian capital has long been a treasured draw on Europe’s tourism map for its cultural highlights, incredible culinary scene and storied architecture that commands attention at every turn. But a new swathe of luxury restaurants and hotels are creating new reason to return to the eternal city. Here, we revisit the best bits – and highlight the new icons travellers need to know about.

THE ESSENTIAL SIGHTS

Rome’s cultural fabric is built around historic monuments and storied ruins, and you can enjoy them all on foot – so long as you’re willing to get your 10,000 steps in before lunch. Start at the Spanish Steps, also known as ‘Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti’, and enjoy panoramic city views from the top, before a steep climb of 135 steps takes you to the picturesque Piazza di Spagna at the base. From here, wander 650 metres further into the city to reach one of Rome’s most timeless icons – the Trevi Fountain. A Baroque-style marvel carved out in the 18th Century, it features 20 metres of intricate sculptural design, including an iconic sculpture of the Roman god, Neptune. Be sure to take a coin to toss into the fountain – legend says that if you toss a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain, it guarantees a return to Rome. Just be prepared to wait your turn – unless you’re going at sunrise, throngs of tourists will likely be ahead of you.

A short walk away takes culture seekers to The Pantheon, another unmissable stop on our whirlwind tour of Rome’s big-hitting icons. This architectural marvel is more than 2,000 years old, built between 25 and 27 BC, then radically reconstructed between 118 and 125 AD. While you can simply marvel at its detailed inscriptions and ornate columns from the outside, you can also explore inside the basilica, which is still used as an active place of worship. Skip-the-line tickets pre-booked online

For fine dining:

start from EUR15 (Dhs65), including an audio guide. From The Pantheon, a short walk takes you to Monument Victor Emanuel II, the Roman Forum and the ruins that surround the Colosseum, where our walking tour concludes. Start at the monument of the first king of Italy, built to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861, then journey past ruins of historic castles, historic temples and ancient forums before reaching the Colosseum. From the outside, you can admire the fascinating façade of this 189m long, 156m wide amphitheatre. But to really understand the true majesty, book a guided tour that takes you inside, accessing the arena floor, underground dungeons and gladiator’s entrance.

THE RESERVATIONS TO MAKE

For authentic eats: La Canonica

For rooftop drinks: Divinity Terrace

On the rooftop of the newly reimagined Orient Express La Minerva comes Gigi, from Dubai-born Rikas Hospitality and French lifestyle brand Paris Society. An elevated alfresco address, sharing plates of gourmet Italian classics are served up in a refined setting, backdropped by stretching city views.

@gigi_restaurant_roma

Tucked down a side street in Rome’s beloved foodie neighbourhood of Trastevere, La Canonica is a cosy ristorante where guests dine alfresco under warm lanterns against a wall of twinkling fairy lights. Think crunchy pizzas with gooey cheese and fresh tomato bases, or hearty pans of al dente pasta made with family recipes.

@lacanonicatrastevere

Hidden in plain sight in the heart of the city, the Divinity Lounge sits atop The Pantheon Hotel and offers panoramic views of the city. Come for drinks – there’s an extensive cocktail list shaken up by the expert mixology team – but be sure to stick around for the golden sunset.

THE STAY: THE GRAND DAME

There’s an old-world glamour to Hotel de Russie, one of the inimitable Rocco Forte hospitality portfolio icons. A time capsule of Rome’s golden age, you’re drawn into the hotel’s vibrant personality and rich soul the second you’re greeted by the smartly dressed doormen.

The interiors are beautiful – pops of rust red and emerald green on the soft furnishings, the lobby and lounge peppered with handpicked artefacts and ceramics. But it’s the natural light flooding in from the courtyard that draws you back outside, where the hotel’s true magnificence is revealed in all its glory. Here, you’ll find Hotel de Russie’s crown jewels – the Stravinskij Bar, Le Jardin restaurant, and the gloriously verdant secret garden, a true oasis where guests can enjoy leisurely post-breakfast strolls or pre-aperitivo wanders and drink in the splendour. The hotel’s restaurant and duo of bars are exceptional. At Le Jardin, breakfast is a relaxed affair where tiers of continental dishes – think fresh fruits, homemade pastries and cured meats are arranged inside the beautifully painted restaurant. The charismatic maître d’ Mario choreographs orders of a la carte eggs, fluffy pancakes and omelettes made to order. Guests sit at tables in the serene garden courtyard, freshly ironed white tablecloths adorning the tables that give a formality, but don’t feel stuffy. It’s grand and glamourous, and the perfect way to start the day.

New for 2025 is the Aquazzura bar, adjacent to Le Jardin, and an enigmatic new spot for dining and imbibing before dinner. Opening from 5pm, it’s where haute fashion and renowned hospitality bring all their best bits together under striped parasols for inventive twists on signature margaritas and mini tacos stuffed with lobster, beef tartare or tuna crudo.

Guest rooms offer a welcome balance of traditional grandeur and contemporary touches. We loved the turn-down service complete with Irene Forte face mask, made using ingredients from the Rocco Forte base in Sicily. Our own room overlooking the rose-tinted courtyard was the perfect base for exploring the Eternal City’s highlights. And when returning from a day of sightseeing, the gentle piano music drifting subtly from the Stravinskij Bar below was enough to draw us down to continue our evening on the buzzing alfresco terrace.

To further aid relaxation, we retreat to one of Hotel de Russie’s most delightful secret spaces – the spa. A recently reimagined addition to the hotel’s sensational facilities, guests benefit from access to a bubbling indoor pool, adorned in blue mosaics that emulate the feel of calmly cascading waves of the sea.

THE STAY: THE ULTRA-LUXURY INNOVATOR

Six Senses might not seem like a natural fit for the Eternal City, but Six Senses Rome – the brand’s first urban address – is designed to stand out. Lacing its well-earned reputation as a wellness and sustainability pioneer into an 18th-century palazzo results in a zen-inducing stay rich with its own identity. A thoughtful restoration has preserved dazzling features like the ornate marble staircase with grand columns, and the hotel’s façade, which blends in perfectly next to the adjacent 16th century church.

But it’s in its contemporary touches where this hotel earns its wow-factor. Guest rooms are modern and minimal, with a curated pillow menu, a complimentary mini-bar, and daily affirmations left at turndown, all part of the in-room experience. Dining and wellness spaces are also designed to dazzle.

Once you’ve marvelled at the ornate grandeur of the lobby, you’re led into a lush indoor-outdoor garden, where terracotta pots are filled with tropical plants, promoting a sense of calm and inviting guests to embrace nature, even in the heart of the city. A grand emerald marble bar marks the entrance to BIVIUM, a warm

and homely all-day dining restaurant that provides a social setting by day, and a more sophisticated dining destination by night. An open kitchen, barista counter, and a gelateria tucked inside (where guests benefit from daily free ice-cream) are all designed to encourage connection and community. Upstairs, NOTOS is the new addition to the culinary scene at the hotel, and will undoubtedly become one of Rome’s most alluring rooftop dining destinations. Here, the cuisine is as sublime as the panoramic city views, with low-lying lounge seating, bar tables, and restaurant seating all designed for balmy alfresco evenings.

The hotel spa is where the two worlds of historic Rome and oriental Six Senses collide so harmoniously, and the resulting spa features ornate Roman baths, where engravings inspired by Roman gods and goddesses adorn smooth stone walls. The facilities are exceptional: think emotion showers spiked with the scents of mint and orange, a steam room and sauna, plus three baths that are hot, tepid and cold, designed to revitalise and refresh.

What impresses most is the expert curation of activities available to guests. Each day a board announces the daily events, which range from candle making in the Earth Lab to olive oil tasting at BIVIUM. Thoughtful, intentional and designed to inspire – much like the overarching hotel experience.

Room rates start from Dhs5,812 per room per night. sixsenses.com, @sixsensesrome

WHERE TO STAY

Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong

What’s it like?

The first-ever Shangri-La property in Hong Kong, this property first opened its doors in June 1981. Located in the famous shopping and entertainment district of Tsim Sha Sui East, it overlooks Victoria Harbour, offering a stunning view of the Hong Kong Island skyline. A 35-minute drive from Hong Kong International Airport, it’s also played host to countless celebrities and VIPs over the years, and a number of famous Hong Kong films have been shot here too.

Its grandeur is evident from the moment you step into the lobby, which, with marble-clad walls, intricate chandeliers, and opulent décor in rich, jewel-toned hues, was designed to mimic the feeling of being inside a Chinese palace. A large and impressive mural by renowned British artist Malcolm Golding, titled “Shangri-La Valley”, adds to the effect. One fun effect for travellers so busy enjoying their holiday they’ve lost track of time, is that the carpets in the elevators state what day of the week it is, changed at midnight each night.

Rooms

The hotel has 688 guestrooms and suites, all of which are decked out in neutral, stately furnishings for classic luxury. Muslim guests will be pleased to find a Qibla directional sign, a copy of the Quran, prayer mats, and bidets in the room should they need them- and separate male and female areas with special prayer facilities can be arranged for group usage.

Facilities

There are seven bars and lounges offering a wide range of cuisines, including Cantonese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and international cuisine (plus an excellent patisserie). A dinner at Shang Palace, the hotel’s signature Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese classics with a twist, is among the must-try culinary experiences.

The hotel also has a luxurious spa, with therapeutic, natural, and aromatherapy-supported treatments available. At the 24-hour Health Club, you’ll find state-of-the-art fitness equipment, as well as an indoor pool and a heated whirlpool bath.

Verdict: Frequently recognised as one of the top hotels in the world, this historical hotel has set benchmarks for Shangri- La on a regional as well as global scale. Staying here offers a slice of history, and easy access to the city’s shopping and entertainment hubs.

Destination: Dubai, UAE

Having just moved to Dubai, I’ll be spending the summer settling in and getting to know the city better. I’m looking forward to discovering its hidden gems –and its air-conditioned ones, too. I will be making quick trips to visit family in Doha and Bahrain.

- Liam Joyce, Editor

Destination: Baku, Azerbaijan

This year I am packing my bags and jetting to Baku, Azerbaijan in September. I can’t wait to tick another Formula 1 race off my bucket list. But between the zooms out on the circuit, you will find me roaming Baku Old City, gazing at the iconic Flame Towers, scoping out the museums and enjoying a lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel Baku (yes, it’s already booked in). Find me kitted out in a Ferrari top and a Red Bull cap.

– Aarti Saundalkar, Arts & Culture Features Editor

Destination: Brazil

Whenever I imagine the perfect trip, my mind goes somewhere far, quiet, and off the usual tourist trail – like Brazil. I’ve been before to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Curitiba, but I’d love to go back and explore its slower, quieter side: islands like Fernando de Noronha, Ilha Grande, and Boipeba. Places with no crowds, no cars – just lush tropical greenery, crystal-clear water, soft white sand, and that wild, untouched beauty that runs through Brazil’s spirit.

– Lana Du, Reporter

Destination: Cape Town, South Africa

Destination: Ireland

I’m heading back home to Ireland this summer and I’m excited for endless green fields, and realistically, a lot of rain. It’s time to catch up with family, drink some Barry’s Tea and put on about 17 more layers of clothing. I can’t wait.

– Madie Murphy, Deputy Editor, Dubai

Destination: Taipei, Taiwan

This summer, I’m heading off on a family trip to Taipei. I can’t wait to explore the bustling night markets like Shilin Night Market and enjoy delicious local flavours like beef noodle soup and authentic bubble tea. I want to tick off the cultural highlights and the best bits of the local area too, so we plan to visit Taipei 101 and do day trips to places like Jiufen Old Street, Beitou for hot springs, Yangmingshan Flower Clock, Shifen Sky Lantern and the Golden Waterfall.

– Sheila Deocareza, Art Director

Destination: Manali, India

This summer, I’m exchanging Dubai’s heat for the slow tranquility of the mountains with a trip to Manali. This Indian hill station in the Himalayas has those picture-perfect, postcardworthy views, with ivory, snowcapped mountains, rolling greenery, flowing streams and quaint cottages. Escape, disconnect and rejuvenate –that’s my plan.

– Manaal Fatimah, Reporter

Back to the motherland we go! It’s time for a long-overdue family reunion filled with hugs, happy tears, and all the good vibes in South Africa. My fiancé and I are touching down to celebrate two big milestones: my brother-in-law’s “I do” moment and my official debut as Auntie Sammi. Let the memory making begin!

– Sammi Barnard, Junior Reporter
