THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Laura Lai Coughlin
This month, we chat with former What’s On editor turned guidebook author and social media personality Laura Lai Coughlin (@bylauralai), whose candid conversations with big foodie personalities have captured the attention of thousands. Laura has lived in and loved the UAE for over 13 years. Here, she shares her best bits…
I love Mama Shelter Dubai because it’s bold, playful, and nothing like the city’s usual hotels. No marble or gold – just vibrant Art Deco arches, an LED-lit ceiling, and a poolside paradise with nautical flags and fringed umbrellas. The outdoor cinema plays vintage cartoons, and the whole place feels like a Wes Anderson-meets-’70s-Vegas dream. Fun, rebellious, and refreshingly different – Mama Shelter has shaken up the UAE’s hotel scene for the better.
@mamashelterdubai
Seriously, who knew fresh figs and pungent gorgonzola would make for an absolutely amazing pizza? Turns out, the Marmellata Bakery boys did. Ranked #29 on MENA’s 50 Best, they make a limited number of pies and focaccia daily, but I’d single out a slice of their signature pie any day – absolutely magic. @marmellatalove
@barrysuae
@matchaalbateen
There are many perks to being part of the fairer sex, but one of the best is exclusive access to Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha. With its chic Californian Palm Springs vibes, this sanctuary offers everything from terracotta-framed padel courts surrounded by greenery to a stunning infinity pool with views of the Arabian Gulf. Between the wellness-focused amenities and serene spaces, it’s the ultimate place to unwind and feel fancy.
Pushing 40 now, I move like a zombie in a low-budget horror movie on a good day. When I’m in Abu Dhabi for longer stints, I head to Barry’s at Galleria Al Maryah to fight the fat. The mix of treadmill sprints and weights is brutal, but the dimly lit studio lets me grimace in private, which I appreciate.
Craft by Side Hustle is my go-to for a perfect day out. As the first in the region to brew and pour on-site, it’s a true craft beer haven. I love sipping their flight tray of mini brews, from IPAs to Golden Ales, while lounging on the sunny glassed patio. Paired with some incredible Louisiana-style smokehouse grub courtesy of chef extraordinaire Troy Payne, it’s an experience I highly recommend.
@craft_by_side_hustle
I’m not much of an online shopper, but I do love the art of gift-giving. When in doubt, I head straight to Heart Cottage Lane, a home-grown interiors boutique where you can discover bespoke homeware hand-selected by Lucy Gibson. I’ve picked up everything from Palmembroidered napkins and cheeky tea plates to the OG fish guggle jug. You can’t go wrong.

THE BEST OF SOUQ AL MINA
Uncover the city’s new foodie neighbourhood
Tucked away at the far end of Zayed Port, behind rows of abandoned warehouses, Souq Al Mina is one of Abu Dhabi’s best-kept secrets. While many know it as the home of the iconic pizza spot Marmellata (@marmellatalove), still the best place to find lovingly crafted, artisanal pies and focaccia (our cover star this month), this recently renovated waterfront district is also packed with independent restaurants and cafés that deserve just as much attention. Overlooking the calm waters of the port, it’s a peaceful place to unwind, soak in the sunset, and enjoy a meal with a view – without the city’s usual crowds.
For a taste of something truly unique, head to Kuzina 22 (@kuzina22restaurant). This Balkan hideaway prides itself on serving dishes so fresh that it doesn’t even own a freezer. Expect succulent kebabs nestled in homemade bread, rich bowls of goulash, and flaky pastry burek – all celebrating the traditional flavors of Bosnia, Syria, and beyond. It’s a welcome departure from the usual dining scene and a mustvisit for anyone looking to expand their palate.
Taking full advantage of its prime location near Al Mina Fish Market, Fishstory (@fishstory.uae) delivers mammoth seafood platters and literal buckets of shellfish – ideal for those who believe there’s no such thing as too much seafood.
Meanwhile, YALA Kombucha (@yalabucha) serves up award-winning brews that are just as refreshing as they are packed with gut-friendly benefits, making it a perfect pit stop for healthconscious foodies.
For coffee lovers, Auro (@aurocoffee) is a standout. This Ethiopian-inspired café roasts and hand-picks its beans in-house, ensuring a top-tier cup every time. It also doubles as an artsy hangout, regularly hosting photography exhibitions that add to its creative charm.
And when it comes to breakfast, Roof (@roofcoffeeshop) doesn’t hold back, serving up hearty morning feasts and indulgent cakes that are impossible to resist.
But that’s not all. Romanella (@romanellapizza) dishes out square Roman-style pizzas that are crispy, cheesy, and incredibly moreish, while Station (@stationuae) keeps things sweet with its range of sugar-free, all-natural ice creams. And with even more hidden gems waiting to be discovered, Souq Al Mina won’t stay under the radar for long – so get there before the secret’s out.

Formed in Scotland in 1994, their breakthrough came with the 2003 album Final Straw, featuring the massive hit Run. But it was the 2006 single Chasing Cars from Eyes Open that truly solidified their place in music history, becoming a pop culture staple. Known for their heartfelt lyrics and melancholic, often introspective vibes, Snow Patrol might not be the first name you’d associate with “feelgood” tunes. Yet, despite their penchant for emotional depth and reflection, they’ve amassed a loyal fanbase, proving that sometimes the best way to feel good is through catharsis.
THE KOOKS
Feel-good factor: 4/5
British rock band The Kooks made their mark in the mid-2000s with infectious indie pop and a sunny, carefree sound. Formed in 2004, they quickly rose to prominence with their debut Inside In/Inside Out, featuring feel-good anthems like Naive and She Moves in Her Own Way. Known for their breezy melodies and upbeat vibe, The Kooks’ music is often the soundtrack to summer days and nights out. Despite some of their more introspective moments, their consistently bright, jangly guitar riffs and catchy hooks have made them a festival favourite. Critics and fans alike praise their knack for making easygoing, feel-good tunes, with their sound evolving into a blend of indie rock and pop that stays true to their youthful energy.
DAY 2 (APRIL 19)
USHER
Feel-good factor: 4/5
Usher is a powerhouse in R&B, known for his smooth vocals, infectious hooks, and dancefloor-ready beats. Bursting onto the scene in the late ’90s, his breakthrough came with Confessions in 2004, delivering timeless hits like Yeah! and Burn. His sound has always been a balance of sultry grooves and upbeat jams, creating the perfect soundtrack for both intimate moments and wild nights out. While some of his lyrics delve into heartbreak and relationship struggles, Usher’s energetic presence and club anthems are undeniably feel-good. His ability to craft both slow jams and high-energy hits has earned him a global following, making him a go-to artist for a feel-good vibe on any occasion.
DAY 3 (APRIL 20)
RAYE
Feel-good factor: 4/5
This British singer-songwriter has been making waves with her bold, genre-blending sound. After years of collaboration with major artists, she stepped into the spotlight with her debut solo work, showcasing a mix of soulful pop, R&B, and electronic influences. Known for her empowering anthems like Regardless and Please Don’t Touch, RAYE’s music often explores themes of self-love, independence, and resilience, making her tracks both infectious and uplifting. While some of her songs dig into emotional vulnerability, her overall vibe is unapologetically positive.
LONDON GRAMMAR
Feel-good factor: 2.5/5
With their ethereal blend of ambient, indie pop and atmospheric electronica, this British trio has captivated fans since 2009. Their debut If You Wait introduced Hannah Reid’s haunting vocals, paired with minimalist instrumentals that defined their sound. Tracks like Strong and Nightcall cemented their place in the alternative scene, showcasing their talent for weaving deeply emotional, cinematic music. Feel-good? Erm, no, but their ability to evoke profound emotion makes their music a poignant kind of uplifting.

and Greece straight to the capital. Like many of Abu Dhabi’s top eateries, AVLU prioritises fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their breakfast spread is a shining example, featuring Turkish sesame simit, Canakkale Ezine cheese, seasonal fruits, and steaming cups of Turkish mountain tea.
LOOK AND FEEL
Drawing inspiration from the Aegean region, AVLU’s design masterfully balances rustic charm with modern elegance. Soft whites, earthy pastels, and warm peachy tones create an inviting atmosphere that feels like a Mediterranean escape. The handpainted murals –intricate artworks that took over a month to complete – tell rich stories of Aegean life.
AVLU Greek & Turkish Cuisine aims to bring the vibrant flavours of Turkey
True to its name (which translates to “courtyard” in Turkish), AVLU’s standout feature is its courtyard-inspired dining space. Bathed in natural light, it offers an indoor, temperature-controlled sanctuary with
a centrepiece lemon tree adding to the Mediterranean aesthetic.
THE MENU
For lunch, we put ourselves in the capable hands of executive chef Olcay Hanci. The menu does not disappoint. We start with grilled Greek octopus and baked manti (Dhs48), followed by a standout favourite –the aubergine millefeuille (Dhs48) layered with green Manouri cheese and Turkish labneh. The slow-cooked beef cheeks (Dhs128) melt in the mouth, while the Dolmadakia (Dhs34), made with Tokat vine leaves, dolma rice, and smoked yoghurt, offers a fresh twist on a classic.
For meat lovers, the Hunter’s Board (Dhs695) is a feast designed for four, packed with chicken, keftedakia, and lamb souvlaki – a proteinpacked spectacle that’s perfect for sharing.

PUBLIC
Can this Abu Dhabi venue prove that cool can also be classy?
Marsa Al Bateen is an underrated culinary hotspot in Abu Dhabi, home to a collection of chic cafés and standout concepts like Saddle House and tashas. Now, it also hosts Public, a visually striking eatery that has already made its mark in Dubai, with locations at Dubai Mall and Museum of the Future.
adorned with warm orange hues, dazzling chandeliers, and edgy, street-style wall art – complete with faux graffiti. It feels like a mix of a Midwestern diner, a retro arcade, and a cosy family restaurant. Here, polished cutlery meets indulgent comfort food.
One of the most eye-catching additions to the area in the past year, Public occupies a prime spot on the Marsa Al Bateen promenade, a favourite outdoor destination for city dwellers. Step inside, and you’re greeted by a bright, vibrant space
Visiting midweek, we’re promptly seated by a friendly server eager to guide us through Public’s paperless menu. We start with the curly corn (Dhs53) – toasted with herbed butter and served with creamy cheese sauce. It’s delightfully messy, but no worries – you’re handed disposable gloves to fully enjoy its buttery, cheesy goodness. For mains, we go with the buffalo pizza (Dhs79) – a satisfying cheat-day delight topped with buffalo sauce and crispy fried chicken strips. Pasta lovers should try the truffle pasta (Dhs89) – rich, saucy, and infused with that unmistakable truffle aroma Abu Dhabi diners know and love. Pair it with parmesan fries (Dhs29) and the Italian Passion mocktail (Dhs35) – a tangy, fruity mix of fresh passionfruit,
pomegranate, and pineapple leaves, perfect for those warm evenings ahead.
Though we didn’t get to the tiramisu (Dhs34), it comes highly recommended by regulars at Public’s Dubai outposts. Served in a generous, shareable portion, it might be worth pacing yourself to save room for this final indulgence.

COFFEE BREAK WITH… MBONISI BAMALA
The
Head Barista & Coffee Experience Curator, fondly known as Caffeine Papi, at Majlis by Pierre Hermé Rosewood Abu Dhabi, shares his passion for coffee
How did you become Head Barista at Majlis by PH/Rosewood?
Passion, patience, and constant learning. To me, coffee is a craft. I immersed myself in everything from sourcing to brewing, worked with top roasters, and refined my approach at Rosewood. My focus? Creating experiences, not just cups of coffee. It’s about storytelling, connection, and always striving for excellence.
Do you have a favourite coffee bean?
Rwanda Musasa – bright, sweet, with berry notes and a silky body. I also love experimental Colombian coffees –producers there are pushing boundaries with fermentation techniques, making some of the most complex and exciting cups I’ve ever tasted.
What’s your go-to brewing method?
I love making pour-overs, especially the V60. The V60 is meditative – pouring, watching the bloom, controlling each variable. A well-done pour-over reveals the coffee’s full character, and I love sharing that moment with guests.
How do you manage your own caffeine intake?
Small sips, sometimes spitting like in wine tastings. Hydration and food are key – I don’t run on caffeine alone!
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Creating new coffee recipes that excite
guests while respecting the coffee itself. Experimenting with flavours, infusions, and textures is fun, but balancing creativity with approachability takes trial and error. It’s all about pushing boundaries without losing the essence of great coffee.
What’s your perspective on coffee’s role in modern culture?
Drinking and preparing coffee is a ritual, an experience. People now seek the best beans, the perfect brew, and meaningful café spaces. Speciality coffee has shifted focus to origin, sustainability, and craftsmanship. It sparks conversations, brings people together, and fuels creativity. I’m in love with how coffee continues to evolve and I think its role will only grow stronger as more people become curious about the story behind each cup.

SOCKS APPEAL
Meet Aussie Goddess Freyja Rampe, founder of KRUMP – the new “it” fitness accessory brand that’s taken the UAE by storm
Firstly, what’s with the name? [Laughs] KRUMP is named after my cats, Kitty and Crumpet. Every time I rolled out my mat, they’d stretch out with me – so they became part of the brand!
Tell us about the inspiration for starting your brand?
I started KRUMP because I was frustrated with poor-quality accessories that didn’t last. Grip socks weren’t grippy, bands snapped, ankle weights rubbed. I wanted to create products that were stylish yet durable – grips that actually grip, bands that don’t slip, and ankle weights that feel as good as they look.
How does KRUMP stand out in the wellness market?
We fuse aesthetics with function while prioritising sustainability. Our accessories use recycled materials wherever possible, even in packaging. With over 10 years in the industry, I design each piece meticulously, ensuring they’re both stylish and high-performing.
What goes into creating the perfect Pilates accessory?
It all starts with the feel – if it’s uncomfortable, you won’t use it. We tested countless samples to perfect our mats’ grip, ankle weights’ fit, and resistance bands’ balance of stretch and strength. Every KRUMP piece is refined until it meets our high standards.
What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Building KRUMP has been an adventure! Sourcing quality materials, managing suppliers, and handling
marketing were all learning curves. We refused to cut corners, especially with sustainability. Research, patience, and trusting experts helped us navigate obstacles. We’ve embraced each and every challenge, been honest about what we can and can’t do – and lent our trust in experts when needed. It’s ok to admit you can’t do everything – and we’ve learned there is always a solution, no matter what.
The Pilates community in the UAE is growing fast. What are your favourite studios? I have to be biased and mention a couple of studios I work at! In Dubai, Cima (JVC) stands out for its stunning space and diverse class offerings, while Revive (JGE) is known for its intense, results-driven workouts led by exceptional trainers. Over in Abu Dhabi, Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha offers the ultimate Pilates experience with a gorgeous beachfront setting, and Bodytree is a go-to for expert instruction and mindful movement.
What’s next for KRUMP? Any exciting launches on the horizon?
Yes! We’re working on collaborations that blend movement and nutrition in fresh ways. Plus, we have new products coming to level up your Pilates game. Stay tuned…

OPENING APRIL 18
MULTI-SENSORY OVERLOAD
Step inside the living universe of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi
Opening its doors on April 18, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi invites visitors into a world where art breathes, light dances, and space pulses with life. An exhibition far beyond the ordinary, teamLab is a realm of evershifting forms, where technology and nature blur into a fluid, living ecosystem.
Within its vast 17,000 sqm expanse, visitors step into spaces where light and sound ripple in response to your presence. Dots of light flicker and synchronise in an autonomous ballet, responding to the touch of a hand before dissolving again
into randomness. Butterflies emerge at your fingertips, vanishing into the air as delicately as they arrived.
Wade through a water garden alive with glowing egg-shaped orbs, each one illuminating and singing as it is nudged creating an echoing wave of colour and tone moving outward in perfect harmony. In another space, a universe unfolds in swirling vortexes and currents, where movement itself sketches shifting lines in space, tracing unseen forces at work.
As you walk, touch, and explore, the artworks evolve in real time, an everchanging dance of light, water, and organic motion. Each moment is completely unique – never to be repeated.
A pathway of 13 connected exhibitions
teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is a vast interconnected journey, leading visitors through 13 immersive multisensory exhibitions. Among them are two groundbreaking installations…
Massless Suns and Dark Suns
Radiant spheres of light appear as tangible yet weightless, igniting in glowing waves when touched. Alongside them, mysterious dark spheres emerge, as though darkness itself has taken form. These elements only exist in perception, dissolving and reforming in an endless cycle.
Levitation Void
A structure that defies gravity, suspended in a delicate balance between movement and stillness. Push it, and it may drift or fall, yet it instinctively rises again, as though drawn back to a state of perfect levitation.
A vision for the future
HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, describes teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi as “a space that redefines what is possible, forging deeper connections between art, technology, and nature to inspire new generations of innovators and thinkers.” He highlights how Saadiyat Cultural District is a testament to Abu Dhabi’s vision of blending heritage with a forward-thinking approach to cultural exchange.
Meanwhile, Toshiyuki Inoko, Founder of teamLab, explains the deeper philosophy behind the experience: “The artworks do not exist independently but are created by the environment itself. Unlike static objects, they emerge and transform through air, water, and light – reminding us that existence itself is intertwined with its surroundings.”

ART IN PLAIN SIGHT
The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial is drawing to a close. Here’s what to see before it’s too late…
If you haven’t yet explored the inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, there’s still time. Running until April 30, this city-wide exhibition examines public space through the lenses of environment, community, urbanity, and indigeneity. It considers how the environment shapes interactions and how modern development intersects with indigenous traditions. Held across Downtown Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Biennial features life-sized artworks that encourage community engagement and enhance the walkability of the city, bridging the past with the present.
1. D-constructing Collective Exhaustion
Afra Al Dhaheri
This immersive installation invites visitors to slow down and escape the fast-paced nature of everyday life. With wooden structures, tangled ropes, light, and sound, it creates a calming sensory experience that encourages reflection and mindfulness.
2. Where Lies My Carpet is Thy Home
Christopher Joshua Benton
Located in Abu Dhabi’s carpet souk, this 66 x 42-metre artwork celebrates the market’s vibrant culture. Through an eight-month collaboration with local merchants from Pakistan and Afghanistan, the piece honours their heritage while reflecting the dynamic energy of the market.
3. We Trapped Us in a Frame, in the Earth
Radhika Khimji
Omani artist Radhika Khimji’s installation features a screen-printed mountainous landscape on canvas mounted on a wooden billboard. Mirrors embedded within reflect Abu Dhabi’s urban environment, linking the past, present, and future while prompting reflections on time and change.
4. Interspecies Assembly
Superflex
A circle of Portuguese pink marble stones in Capital Park invites both people and other living beings to gather, listen, and share their awareness of the world. This installation fosters a sense of connection through the sounds of the surrounding environment.
5. Barzakh
Wael Al Awar

THE ACCIDENTAL ICON
Celeste Barber, the Australian Queen of Comedy takes centre stage in Dubai this month
For years, Celeste Barber has been the internet’s go-to comedic relief, poking fun at the absurdity of celebrity culture and Instagram perfection. Now, the Australian comedian, actor, and social media sensation is taking her humour from the screen to the stage, bringing her latest comedy tour, Backup Dancer, to Dubai. With millions of followers, a best-selling book, and a Netflix series under her belt, Barber’s ascent from online parody queen to global star is nothing short of spectacular.
Barber’s journey to stardom didn’t begin with a calculated plan to disrupt social media norms. A trained actress, she spent years working in Australian television on shows, but it was her unfiltered take on the curated world of celebrity that catapulted her into the limelight. What started as a casual experiment – recreating highfashion photos and videos with hilarious, self-deprecating honesty – quickly became an internet phenomenon.
With posts mimicking everyone from the Kardashians to Victoria’s Secret models, Barber highlighted the ridiculousness of unattainable beauty standards, striking a chord with audiences worldwide. Her Instagram following skyrocketed, now standing at over nine million, and her comedy became more of a movement than pure entertainment.
Barber’s success online led to a wealth of opportunities beyond social media. In 2019, she released her book, Challenge Accepted!, a witty and empowering take
on life, motherhood, and body positivity. Around the same time, she embarked on her first stand-up tour, proving she could bring her signature humour to live audiences just as effortlessly as she did in short-form videos.
Then came Wellmania, a Netflix comedy-drama inspired by journalist Brigid Delaney’s book about the wellness industry. Barber played the lead, further cementing her ability to transition from comedic sketches to fully-fledged acting roles. The show, much like Barber herself, took a cheeky, irreverent approach to modern wellness obsessions and resonated with audiences worldwide.
Now, Barber is taking centre stage –
WHAT STARTED AS A CASUAL EXPERIMENT, QUICKLY BECAME AN INTERNET PHENOMENON
literally. Her Backup Dancer tour, making its way to Dubai Opera, is a tongue-incheek nod to the fact that, despite being an international star, she often finds herself playing second fiddle in the world of traditional entertainment. But as Barber has proven time and time again, she’s no one’s backup.
Her stand-up blends observational humour, personal anecdotes, and sharp social commentary. Whether she’s discussing parenting mishaps, the ridiculousness of influencer culture, or the bizarre world of Hollywood, Barber’s comedy is both relatable and riotous. And in a city like Dubai, where luxury and Instagram-worthy lifestyles reign supreme, her self-aware, no-holds-barred humor is sure to strike a chord.
On celebrity fitness: “Of course you have abs, Jennifer. You have a chef.”
On body confidence: “The key to looking good in a swimsuit? Own it. Or stand next to someone really awkward.”
On social media culture: “I love it when influencers say, ‘Just be yourself!’ while using a filter that makes them look like a unicorn.”
On self-care: “Nothing says ‘treat yourself’ like eating an entire block of chocolate and then regretting everything.”
On parenthood: “I thought I had my life together, and then I had kids. Now I just hope my clothes aren’t inside out.”

The UAE’s best hobby and interest clubs
In a country with a rapidly growing population, why is it so easy to feel lonely? Busy lifestyles, smartphones and social media have got a lot to answer for. So, we have been on a quest to find the most welcoming hobby and interest clubs where you can hang out with others and get your mind and body moving.
The good news is there is a lot of choice out there. But what sets these clubs apart is their founders. These are a group of passionate people who have set out to create something for the community; for no other reason than to give people a chance to connect in an increasingly disconnected world.

JUMEIRAH JOHNS RUNNING CLUB
What started as a couple of friends meeting for a pre-work walk or run on the beach has evolved into an extremely active run club with activities taking place nearly every day of the week. What we love about Jumeirah Johns is that it focuses on the social side of running. All ages and abilities are welcome, the classes are free and they have got some lovely collaborations happening with big brands. With a huge following on Instagram, the two young founders have tapped into something all of us really need - the chance to move our bodies, feel connected to others and go at our own pace.
@jumeirahjohnsrunningclub
Angus Maxfield & Ryan Underwood
Five minutes with the co-founders of Jumeirah Johns Running Club
Tell us the story of Jumeirah Johns.
Jumeirah Johns started out of necessity. Ryan and I were into running but couldn’t find any fun, social run clubs in Dubai — just paid ones or groups without much of a vibe. So, along with Nathan Evans, a school friend who now handles our creative work, we decided to start our own. It turned out many people were looking for the same thing: a laid-back, friendly community outside of the usual Dubai scenes. It’s been special to build this together, especially since Ryan and I have been best mates since secondary school.
What makes JJs social, and do you have plans to expand?
At its core, Jumeirah Johns is a social run club. We always end each session with a social hangout, whether it’s coffee, drinks, or just a catch-up. It’s awesome seeing elite athletes and beginners chat without any ego. We’ve even planned trips like our recent ski trip to Georgia. Right now, we’re focused on Dubai, but who knows what the future holds for other emirates!
Can you share any great connections made through the club?
One amazing story is a couple who moved to Dubai, joined a run the day they arrived, and ended up meeting their closest friends there. The club has really helped people grow more confident and connect outside the usual Dubai scene. It’s been amazing seeing people
come out of their shells and form real friendships.
What happens during the summer months?
We don’t stop in the summer! While we might cut back on sessions, we still meet weekly and keep the socials going. Expect the same Jumeirah Johns vibe, plus some special collaborations and events to keep things fresh and fun.
BIKEERA
The first rule of Bikeera bike club is, bring your friends to bike club. Free morning group ride sessions take place throughout the week with a Monday E-Bike ride departing from the Bikeera Café at Kite Beach in Dubai; a 30km route on Tuesdays in collaboration with Jumeirah Johns Running Club; and a 40km ‘humpday’ pedal around the roads of Nad Al Sheba. Weekend warriors can choose from a chilled 50km spin at Al Qudra and a two-wheeled traversing of the wilds of Mushrif Trail Park. There are sessions for all ability levels, a free recovery zone with ice baths, massage guns and rollers, and a welcoming embrace for all newcomers. Get your helmet on, we ride at dawn. @bikeera.mobility
THE NADI
Where are all our retirees at?
The Nadi, a multi-generational social club, was set up in early 2024 by Shaden Abdellatif and Joanne Kubba who were inspired by all the parents and grandparents who are staying in the UAE for longer. But you don’t have to be a senior member of society to enjoy
The Nadi – all activities are accessible for all ages. Recent one-off events have included a bingo night, a hike in Ras Al Khaimah and Tai Chi on the beach. Weekly staples include a social pickleball game on Tuesday, and mobility mornings at Joint Space on Friday.

STRONGER TOGETHER ABU DHABI
What began with founder and long-term Abu Dhabi resident Chloe Wilson seeking companionship through running, has flourished into a vibrant ‘all girls’ fitness community. Check out the group’s almost 4,000 follower-strong Instagram page and you’ll see why. Stronger Together’s weekly and monthly events aim to connect women through fitness with each run typically attracting 30 to 40 participants and welcoming all fitness levels to show up and walk, jog, or run. The club also offers free monthly sessions in yoga, boxing, and other fun workouts, with an all-girls cycling tour in Spain coming up this May.

HOW ABOUT
Anna Cartwright started ‘How About’ in 2022 to help people in Dubai connect, make friends and experience new things. With 10 events a month ranging from hikes to mindfulness sessions, creative workshops, padel and business networking, the thriving community offers a membership scheme or you can just pay as you go per event. One of the most popular events are the ‘matched’ breakfasts and dinners where the club admins match people together on the tables based on their interests. Look out for events coming to Abu Dhabi in April/May 2025.

MAKING WAVES
Chrystal Engelbrecht from Surf Abu Dhabi describes the euphoria and spirituality she feels when catching a wave
Surf Abu Dhabi has quickly established itself as a world-class destination for wave riders, recently hosting the hugely successful Surf Abu Dhabi Pro and drawing global attention as a premier surfing venue. With its state-of-theart manmade waves on Hudayriyat Island, it has become a hub for both professional and recreational surfers alike. And among its biggest supporters is none other than 11time world champion Kelly Slater, who put his star power behind Surf Abu Dhabi. To learn more about what makes this cuttingedge surf spot so special, What’s On caught up with one of its top instructors, South African Chrystal Engelbrecht.
Is Kelly Slater a surfing hero of yours?
He was, and always will be, a surf hero of mine. It goes way back to school projects I did about surfing idols. Kelly’s reputation helped create Surf Abu Dhabi and now I’m part of history being made here in Abu Dhabi, which is pretty cool.
Kelly said the wave at Surf Abu Dhabi rivals the best natural waves he’s ever surfed. Do you agree?
Kelly has surfed so many surf breaks around the world so for him to make such a statement shows you how awesome this wave actually is. Based on my experience of surfing waves in the ocean I can definitely agree with him – this wave at Abu Dhabi is magical. It gives people the opportunity
to experience something they might search for in the ocean for years, but here in Abu Dhabi this crazy barrel is right there.
What’s the biggest difference between a manmade wave and natural wave?
Natural waves are extremely unpredictable. Conditions like wave size, tide, and wind direction vary throughout the day, therefore your timing becomes super crucial. A manmade wave is way more predictable and consistent which gives you that rhythm when you surf it.
How pleasing has it been to welcome surfers to Surf Abu Dhabi?
The people we get to host here come from all around the world, they have different traditions, languages and cultures and we love hearing their stories. Our staff are also from around the world so they have an instant connection with our guests.
What kind of surfing community have you found in Abu Dhabi?
I’ve been in the UAE for 10 years and the surf community is definitely growing.
The people who have come from around the world to work at Surf Abu Dhabi have brought so much to the community already with their passion for surfing and their experiences, which helps to expand the scene.
What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed?
I’m not a big wave fan, so my biggest wave would be a lot of people’s smallest! If I had to choose one, it would probably be an eightfoot wave in the Maldives. Once you paddle out on big swell and catch bigger waves, you feel adrenaline in your veins and you want more, but at the same time it’s scary.
How did you learn to surf?
When I was about 10 I’d swim in my best friend’s pool and try to stand up on her dad’s surfboard as a fun game. We’d go to our home beach in South Africa called Warner Beach and watch the locals surf. I used to catch little waves with my body board and try to stand up.
What happened next?
I told my parents I wanted to try surfing for real, so they booked me a lesson with a local pro surfer called Sarah Johnson. I’ll never forget my first wave: it was the left side of the rocks and she pushed me into the foam. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I was hooked from that moment.
When you’re surfing, do you feel anything spiritual?
Yeah, I feel a deep spiritual connection when I’m out on the water, the feeling is almost indescribable. I only find that kind of happiness when I’m surfing, it’s a state of euphoria and it’s very therapeutic. When I come out of the water, whether it was a good or bad session, I feel rejuvenated.

TRAVEL // INTO THE WILD
Words: Madie Murphy
With the Eid break a distant memory and the long slog of summer nearing, you might already be in need of a weekend getaway. And if the hassle of airport queues, plane food, and screaming children that don’t belong to you feels too overwhelming, then Sir Bani Yas Island could be just the ticket.
Hop in the car and head west towards Jebel Dhanna and the ferry port –three hours from Dubai or two and a half from Abu Dhabi. From there, your holiday relaxation begins the moment you step onto the boat. Let the gentle sway of the 30-minute sail set the tone for a tranquil retreat on this stunning island sanctuary.
OUT OF THE CITY… AND INTO Africa
Experience the sights and sounds of the savannah without leaving the UAE, as What’s On’s Madie Murphy discovers
INTO THE WILD
Around 11,000 animals share the 87sqkm island, including cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, oryx, and gazelles. The proximity of the animals is startling – gazelles skip up to the back doors of guests’ villas and the main resort buildings. Don’t worry, though; there’s no chance of finding a cheetah in your bedroom as larger creatures are kept behind fences. But as you sit in an open-roof 4x4 on a guided tour, you just might spot them stealthily blending into the savannah grass, or see giraffes towering above the trees from just a few metres away.
Drive around the corner, and you’ll find zebras roaming freely. But the real magic is in the smaller moments – watching gazelles and oryx bound effortlessly across the terrain, a reminder of the island’s commitment to conservation and wildlife preservation. Our guide was an expert in all things Sir Bani Yas, making the journey even more fascinating as we learned about the different species and the island’s dedicated conservation efforts.
A wildlife tour lasts about 90 minutes (Dhs350 for adults, Dhs190 for children) and is the absolute highlight of the activities on the island.
WHERE TO STAY
Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort
While the name may be a mouthful, the resort itself has not bitten off more than it can chew. There are 30 private villas, each with its own pool, and every single one boasts uninterrupted beach views that stretch straight out to the ocean. There’s something so tropical about this place – you could easily believe you were in the Seychelles or the Maldives.
That evening, we dined at Olio Restaurant, an Italian gem that left us dreaming about the mozzarella-filled rice clouds. This resort is the epitome of beachside relaxation, recently refurbished into the dream escape it is today. Rates start from Dhs1,550 per night.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Beyond wildlife tours, guests can try a whole host of activities ranging from horse riding and mountain biking, to stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and kayaking. For a more leisurely experience, the history and cultural tours (Dhs395 adults, Dhs195 children), stop at some of the island’s impressive archaeological sites, including an excavation site of a Nestorian Christian monastery, believed to date back to 600 AD.
Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort
For an equally impressive – yet entirely different – experience, the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort offers a slice of Africa in the UAE. Like its sister property, it boasts 30 villas with private pools, but this time, the aesthetic is pure safari chic.
One of our favourite moments? Taking a dip in the pool while gazelles, peacocks, and other wildlife gracefully wandered past our accommodation. The African charm extends to the dining areas, too, and we enjoyed a meat-centric feast at The Savannah Grill. Stays at this stylish safari retreat start from Dhs1,650 per night.

These beautiful hidden gems in the Middle East defy expectations
Looking at the images across these pages and you’d be forgiven for thinking they were in far flung destinations. But, believe it or not, some of the most stunning locations on the planet are right here in the region. Here are seven extraordinary spots in the Middle East that will make you believe paradise is just around the corner.
Asir Mountains
Where: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a tourist destination is growing. In particular, places like Al-Ula are really putting KSA on the map. But there’s more to discover in the Kingdom. Located about 700km south of Al-Ula is Asir Mountains, an hidden paradise. Abundant with natural beauty, rich culture and historical significance, it’s home to green valleys, towering peaks and ancient villages. Here, travellers will truly feel they are on one of the best off-the-beaten track destinations. Nature lovers will easily feel at home, and will love exploring its picturesque landscapes, parks and villages. You can take a cable car up Jabal Sawda (black mountains in Arabic) – the highest peak in Saudi approximately 3,000m above sea level. Your reward? Fluffy clouds, cooler temperatures, and plenty of greenery.
Asir Mountains
Wadi Dana
Where: Jordan
Images of Wadi Dana will instantly draw comparisons to Petra (the more famous rocky landscape in Jordan) and even the Grand Canyon in the USA. Wadi Dana exudes dramatic cliffs and natural redstained (thanks to the presence of iron oxide or rust) rock formation and rich wildlife and one thing is certain, nature lovers will love the quiet and immersive experience with nature. Located in Dana Biosphere Reserve, the largest nature reserve in Jordan, you can enjoy incredible hiking trails, valley views and learn about the Bedouin culture. Spend the night to truly experience Jordanian village life.
Salalah
Where: Oman
No, we didn’t mess up our image search. What you’re looking at isn’t Kerala, India, or Sri Lanka’s Bambarakanda waterfall. It’s Salalah, Oman – a verdant oasis, yet often overshadowed by more well-known destinations. For those in the know, it’s a hidden gem where serene views, cascading waterfalls, and natural swimming pools await. Come monsoon season, the landscape transforms into a mist-covered paradise, a striking contrast to the desert scenery many associate with the region. Take the time to also explore the aweinspiring Tawi Attair Sinkhole, almost 700 feet deep. Salalah may be off the beaten path, but once you’re here, it’s clear this place is anything but ordinary.
Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea)
Where: Qatar
Visit Qatar deems the Inland Sea one of the rarest places on earth. A space where two landscapes, golden desert dunes and blue coastal waters meet together in harmony. Unlike the beach, Khor Al Adaid shows off towering desert dunes next to clear, shallow waters. Not only is it unique, it is recognised by UNESCO as a natural reserve, which highlights its rarity and importance. It has a rich biodiversity, migratory birds, marine life, and desert fauna. Wanderers can experience this unspoiled visual masterpiece in peaceful isolation.
EVEN CLOSE TO HOME
Three UAE spots that teleport you abroad
Sir Bani Yas Island
As you’ve read on the previous pages, step onto Sir Bani Yas Island, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the Serengeti. This Abu Dhabi island is home to an African-style wildlife reserve, where safari tours let you experience giraffes, gazelles, and hyenas in their natural habitat. A true haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Hatta
While UAE residents know it well, this hidden gem surprises many. With rugged mountains and serene landscapes, it’s a natural escape few expect to find in the UAE. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, or kayak through this stunning terrain.
Anantara Mina Al Arab
Ras Al Khaimah Resort
Your Maldives-esque snaps with turquoise waters will have your friends fooled – until they learn it’s just an hour away from Dubai. This luxurious escape offers overwater villas, pristine beaches, and natural beauty, all without the need to fly.

In recent years, the UAE has seen a flurry of all-inclusive family-friendly resorts. WHY I LOVED RIXOS
This month’s mini What’s On reporter, nine-year-old Polly Kirwan, reports live from her stay…
On F&B: “You are spoiled for choice from terrific teppanyaki to a bar in the pool. Orient, the Turkish restaurant offers lovely lamb chops and mouth watering kebabs. The juice bar next to the gym serves a variety of smoothies all tropical, delicious and fresh.”
On activities: “The pool is an exquisite place to be: it has amazing aqua cycling, incredible swimming facilities and people on rollerblades serve you your drinks and nibbles! The beach, which is very close by, leads to a crystal-clear sea with turtles and dolphins.”
On other fun stuff: “The hotel feels like a playground for kids. Well, most places have adults’ only areas but to make this equally enjoyable for us there is an amazing kids club and a brilliant mini water park and wave pool. In the evenings there’s all sorts of entertainment, too. My sisters and I loved the amazing dancers that have fruit balancing on their heads.”
Polly’s Verdict
All in all this place is brilliant – I can’t wait to come back.

WELCOME
Whether you’re resident or a visitor, brunch is a rite of passage in the UAE. It’s a scene that took the traditional portmanteau of ‘breakfast and lunch’ and dialled it up to 11, creating a all inclusive gastronomic phenomenon, now famous around the world.
With ever-evolving foodie fashions across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the Northern Emirates, it can be hard to keep track of the biggest and best brunches. But we’re here to help with our bi-annual guides to the latest and greatest spreads. So, without further ado, here are all the incredible brunches to check out this season...
