MOSAIC YOUTH THEATRE OF DETROIT . 2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT

At Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, we support and equip youth to create change. We teach them to create change in their communities and the world, change in the arts & culture sector, and change that enhances the quality of life for their and future generations. We are excited to share how young artists and staff partnered locally and abroad to create change through the arts over the last year.

From the youth ensemble to school residencies, the festival of youth plays and compositions to summer camps, we provided young people with accessible and relevant transformational arts experiences. These programs also illuminated paths to the world beyond their neighborhood.

In the past year, young artists collaborated with peers in the UK to produce an album of original music, performed works by Tony-nominated Dominique Morrisseau, and joined Josh Groban on tour. These experiences cultivate leadership, character, and confidence to create positive change in the world.

The young people we have the honor of walking with radiate excellence on stage and in life, continuing the legacy of young artists across the three decades of Mosaic programs. These pages highlight a few of the people, programs, performances, and partnerships that comprised the 2021-2022 season.

Thanks to the impactful support of donors, door openers, and partners, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit is stronger than ever. We embrace joy as we enter this 30th year with inspiring young artist leaders who create change to build the world they envision.

The Youthful Cities Programme is a cultural and creative skills exchange between young people across the globe. Created through a partnership between Coventry UK City of Culture, the British Council and Youthful Cities, the program enabled young adults (age 18-25) to creatively respond to important, urgent and youthfocused issues in their cities.

Youth from Coventry partnered with youth in four international cities; Nairobi (Kenya), Bogotá (Colombia), Beirut (Lebanon), and Detroit (Michigan, United States of America), in the creation of four new artworks and an event which brought together the ideas and innovations from the exchanges into a three-day Global Youth Summit in Coventry. 5 musicians from Coventry and 5 from Detroit collaborated online to create new music rooted in their experiences of their cities, they were supported by local organizations Media Mania (Coventry) and Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit (Detroit).

We are committed to upholding safe spaces that prioritize honesty, trust, respect, and integrity and honor diverse perspectives, lived experience, and expertise to enhance the communities we serve and those we are a part of creating. This year we partnered with eighteen schools and community partners and visited twenty-nine neighborhoods throughout metro-Detroit bringing

education and theatrical performances to the community. From interactive activities including Mosaic Mobile and Summer Camp to our in-school

and Mwindo tour, babies and the young at heart joined us in opportunities to gather and share in creative expressions.
