Kirkwood Kirkwood is big-mountain riding with smalltown attitude. This scenic High Sierra canyon is 35 miles south of Lake Tahoe off California State Route 88, about a 50-minute drive on dry roads. The resort’s location and high, 7,800' to 9,800' elevation often give it one of the nation’s deepest snowpacks.
