Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.
Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.
History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.
Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sincerely,

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communi ties are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I en courage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offer ings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Is lands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and in dulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemo nes. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.
As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

GALLOWS BAY
Enso Indigo Home – 340-513-3195
Back in the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s, islanders and visitors devoured Java Wraps sarongs, clothes, and take-out decor. Even if this is not a fond memory for you, you’re in for a treat as Twila Wilson and Kobie Nichols reincarnate this popular vibe into an all-encompassing home store. They’ve found a way to bring back those incredible textiles, create new designs, and mix it all with new-found objects. The name Enso says it all for them as a sacred Zen Buddha symbol representing strength and elegance and the manifestation of the artist at the moment of creation. This store will, no doubt, evolve into something very special for St. Croix. Located in Gallows Bay, in the orange Arawak building, with front and back entrances. guests for nearly two decades, they had long dreamed of putting their personal touches on the landmark hotel. When the opportunity arose to purchase Sand Castle in 2017, they jumped at the chance to make their dream come true.
Hailing from the Nashville area, the two come to the hospitality business from very different career histories –Chris in salon ownership and Ted as a labor leader and senior flight attendant at American Airlines. Over the past few years, they have assembled a team of talent with the focus being to welcome guests to the hotel as if it’s their second home. Chris and Ted are hands-on owners and strive to make guests from all walks of life feel relaxed, accepted, and spoiled in the newly renovated hotel. Designed by renowned architect and St. Croix resident John Randal McDonald (known for his love of Mid-century Prairie style), the hotel has grown from the original structure to include stand-alone beach front villas, and a secluded courtyard area with its own pool. The entire property has been renovated and landscaped to return to its mid-century glory. Also on the property is the award-winning Beach Side Café.

EASY DINING GUIDE
Longtime Leader Susan Wall Retires from St. Croix This Week as Christina Frederick Takes the Helm as General Manager
For 54 years St Croix This Week has been showcasing the best of what the island’s twin cities of Christiansted and Frederiksted and all points in between have to offer.
Part local lifestyle magazine part destination guide, it is published by Metro Caribbean, whose connection to the magazine and St. Croix dates back more than 25 years. But credit for the quality and allure of the magazine goes to General Manager Susan Wall, who has been the woman behind the book for 16 years. She has singlehandedly curated content to celebrate St. Croix and helped hundreds of local businesses reach island residents and visitors alike each and every month.
“Susan is amazing. She oversees the content, production and distribution of the magazine while at the same time partnering with local businesses to make sure their advertising has impact,” says Publisher Charlotte Atkins.
So, it is a bittersweet time for the magazine as Susan retired in March and turned over the GM reins to Christina Frederick, a 24-year St. Croix resident, artist and small business owner.
Many know Christina as the co-owner and manager of ARTfarm, a sustainable organic farm on St. Croix. But for the past two decades she has also headed her own design and marketing company, helping clients with branding, graphics and web design/production, social media, copywriting, editing, photography, signage and public relations.
“Christina’s experience includes writing, editing, design and production, so that coupled with her network of relationships on St. Croix, makes her well suited to take the helm of our beloved publication,” said Charlotte.
Susan agrees wholeheartedly. “I have known Christina many years as an energetic and creative energy in our community. I am a graphic artist wannabe and she is the real deal. Her artistic skills are impressive and she has this ability to see something in a new light and promote it in a new way. I have every confidence that she will take on her new position with gusto.”
“I am deeply honored and excited to have been chosen from a substantial local talent pool,” said Christina. “Susan Wall has tirelessly and humbly continued to build a vibrant resource for the St. Croix community that also drives commerce, with unparalleled distribution and editorial depth and consistency. Our familiar local magazine has been Susan's baby, and I plan to cherish and nurture it as it continues to grow, evolve, and provide promotion and reflection of the breadth of experiences our island has to offer.”
Susan wrapped up her tenure with St. Croix This Week in March, with this edition being her finale. “Being the managing editor and GM of St. Croix This Week has been an honor, challenging me in new ways and pushing my needle in a wonderful direction!” said Susan. “Even though I had been an editor at two national magazines in NYC before moving here, I never guessed that I would have had this kind of opportunity here on St. Croix.”
St. Croix This Week has a storied history. Susan recalls “coming to the islands decades ago and having a stewardess, as we called them, coming down the aisle of the plane with a stack of the' Pink Sheet' for St. Croix in one arm, and the 'Yellow Sheet' for St. Thomas in the other as she asked each passenger where they were going. Those stapled sheets have come a long way since then.
“Originally just for visitors, the magazine has evolved, over the years, into a premium, iconic, four-color publication, picked up all over the island by everyone, visitors and locals. Filling the pages with local business ads, events and features -- from Shopping to Staying Here, from Eat & Drink to Watersports, and from Local Art to our Danish Connection -- we reached a broad section of the community showing our visitors, and those who want to move here, what we are all about.”
As our magazine celebrates this changing of the guard, there are not words enough to laud Susan and share what she has meant to this magazine and to St. Croix as its devoted leader. But in Christina we have found a new leader also familiar with and passionate about the rich tapestry of St. Croix who is committed to continuing to shine the light brightly on the best of what our beautiful island has to offer.

Local Art Local Art COVER STORIES
Pedra Chaffers
Ihave been making art for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan I was immersed in a community that was a great supporter of the arts and my parents were very supportive of my creative endeavors. My passion for visual Art led me to attend the University of Michigan where I received a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) and Certification to teach Visual Art K-12. Professionally, I have worked as an Art Educator in classrooms and museums.
I have always found beads to be an attractive material. The combination of light and color captured by these tiny objects creates a unique brilliance. The power and the possibilities of beads was reaffirmed through my work at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian. Both institutions gave me in-depth exposure to various African beadwork traditions.
In 2001 I moved to St. Croix. My interest in working with beads continued, fueled by the vibrancy and richness of Caribbean carnival traditions.
During my twelve years on the island, I was the Lower and Middle School Art teacher at the Good Hope School. In addition to my teaching practice, I continued my work as an artist. For ten years, I participated in the Good Hope Art Show as well as numerous Art Thursday exhibitions.
“Visons in Red and Green,” on the cover of the April issue, uses the human face as a foundation to explore the abstraction of recognizable forms. In this artwork, glass beads are used to define basic facial features and to enhance them. I am pleased to share work that continues my on-going exploration of form and design.
My current work can be seen at Cane Roots Art Gallery in Christiansted in the exhibition “Beads, Fabric, and Photographs: Generational Synergy” April 17- May 16, 2025. pchaffersart@yahoo.com

Christina Frederick
Igrew up near the beach in Long Island, NY, where I developed a spiritual connection to the natural world and honed my skills in visual and performing arts. I sold my first painting at 16. I studied filmmaking at the University at Buffalo, then transferred to Parsons School of Design, where I met artist Luca Gasperi. I worked for over a decade as a creative professional in NYC and Amsterdam.
In 2001, I moved to St. Croix to start a life and family with Luca. I assisted in the Gasperi family’s cattle and vacation rental operations, started working in digital video, writing for local media about the arts, and showing work in art exhibitions. Together we created the ARTfarm, sustainably grown food from the South Shore bush; and a garden fairy of a child, who has wildly grown into a multi-media and performing artist/farming activist, and has pulled me into my childhood roots learning primitive skills practices at Mount Victory Eco-Camp.
My work is introspective and metaphorical, with objects and figures holding symbolic power for me. I use recycled wood, with graphite drawings layered in paint and glazes. Themes have included documenting people and agriculture on St. Croix, exploring process and production, knowledge mapping, and spiritual legacies. May 2025 is my third St. Croix This Week cover.
2024.
In 24 years I’ve weathered big storms while blessed with the bonds of our small community. Island life challenges made me an octopus. I’ve used my professional skills to help small businesses and non-profits thrive with logos, posters, websites, news articles and grant writing. I’ve performed on local stages, collected tree seeds and sea turtle data, built my contractor skills, been a long-term care manager to my mom, and I have advocated for the ecosystems and viewscapes of our island that make it so unique and beautiful.
By April 1, I will succeed Susan Wall as GM of St. Croix This Week and look forward to working with the community.

Our Danish Connection
The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.
Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:
• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.
• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.
• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.
• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.
• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.
• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.
• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!
70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.
AFTER
A LONG AND VARIED ST.CROIX CAREER, I AM READY FOR A NEW LIFE
By Nina York
When husband Ed, son Michael and I moved from our home of 13 years in Puerto Rico to St. Croix, it was his career in electronics that had importance. Mine had been as a mother and part-time secretary. I would say I found my own identity in St. Croix, and this island provided the happiest fulfillment I could ever have imagined.
It started with me volunteering my services at the Animal Shelter’s flea market, also greeting visitors at the National Park Service Fort in Christiansted, and sorting the books in the St. Croix Landmarks Society’s tiny library. It led to my becoming aware of the amazing history of this island related to my native country of Denmark. Soon I realized that this history would be of interest to many Danes and that my new-found knowledge could be utilized for tours. I found fascinating documents that I translated and published, and found a Swedish friend to become a supplier of historic maps and prints. My relatives in Denmark had great interest in my new home and owned documents that led me to revive a Danish West Indies charity of publishing Christmas Seals, a successful undertaking that raised large sums for local youth programs for 13 years.
My big achievement was being offered the position of Editor of St. Croix This Week shortly after Hurricane Hugo devastated the island in September 1989. Not an easy task for a tourism magazine, but the numerous contractors rebuilding the island had to eat and were making money. The position led to 13 years of enjoyable career experiences with this publication, only halted by the offer of a leadership role for a Danish tour company in St. Croix, plus my husband’s temporary health problems.
Over the years, a friendship organization, St. Croix Friends of Denmark, had played a great role in my life, giving me the editorship of the quarterly newsletter and chairing events like their 50th Anniversary and the helping with the Centennial Transfer Commemoration and, with its counterpart in Denmark, Danish West Indian Society, celebrated biennial exchange festivals.
I was also excited to be a member of Rotary Club of St. Croix MidIsle and its scholarship program. I was encouraged by the reception by the public to the informative columns I continued to write for St. Croix This Week that were named Our Danish Connection. That led to the suggestion that I undertake compiling a selection of 70 of those features for publication, this time to include my translation of the original English text, not easy, given that I had not lived in Denmark for almost 60 years!. I was grateful for the financial support by the two friendship organizations. This led me to a recent minor additional publication covering the lifestyles of St. Croix over its several thousand years of history.
Now, with the change taking place with the farewell of my friend Susan Wall as Editor, I also saw the need for new blood and a time for resting. I will most likely be leaving the island to live with my son and daughter-in-law stateside, and say thank you to St. Croix for having given me a wonderful life, with great friends, great organizations, and having learned so much that has enriched this part of my life. I will miss you, and the beauty of nature and wonderful climate. But I am thankful to my son for letting me share the next chapter with him and his wife, both of whom I love. A fond farewell to my beloved island!

Golden Hook Fishing Club (GHFC) was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1999 by 12 resident billfish anglers. Their goal being to promote and encourage the sport of saltwater fishing in the VI through the establishment and promotion of an annual series of fishing tournaments called the Golden Hook Series and instill, within the membership, an awareness of conservation and its impact on all marine life and our communities, ensuring the continuation of sport fishing for many years and generations to come!
The Golden Hook Series Tournament consists of four competitions where teams vie against the seas, weather, and each other to top out for the biggest fish, best boat, and most points for the series. These events have been held 20+ years and typically consist of oneto-two-day events with an average of 10 to 15 boats participating. Annual Series Tournaments include (2) Spring Events - Dolphin Tournament and Golden Hook Challenge (Billfish) as well as (2) Fall Events – Golden Hook Guy/Gal “Reel” Challenge and Wahoo Finale. Anglers of the tournaments are vying for a chance to win major cash prizes and the recognition of a lifetime!
In the summer, GHFC also holds an Annual Kids Handline Fishing Tournament, and volunteers teach children the sport of fishing off the wharf in Christiansted. In 2023, GHFC organized and presented the Fish-With-A-Vet Tournament, gifting approximately 35 active and retired veterans a day of fishing in these beautiful Caribbean waters.
The 2025 Golden Hook Series has officially come back starting with the Dolphin & Golden Hook Challenge on April 26 with a Captain' Meeting on April 24. Details in the Events Calendar. Anglers are encouraged to gather their teams and register for the tournaments. You can become a part of this by becoming a member and committing some of your time to the club, helping us ensure that game fishing will continue in our islands as an environmentally safe and entertaining sport.

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORIC & HELPFUL INFORMATION
HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name.
Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall.
Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops.
In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771.
Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline.
Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.
Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.
Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.
DRIVE LEFT WORSHIP
St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population.
Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the decision to expand and purchase this island from the French.
So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.
The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home.
There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 35.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Map Frederiksted Map
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.
WEST END ATTRACTIONS

VIAC: Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts – More Than Just a Rehabilitation Project, VIAC Creates Educational
By Monique Clendinen Watson
VIAC Grants/Public Relations Manager
As the Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts (VIAC) carries out its mission to rehabilitate the Old Barracks Property at 21, 22, and 23 Hospital Street, Christiansted, St. Croix, it is simultaneously developing the programming that will be offered at the educational center. VIAC’s strategic plan mandates that the non-profit 501(c) 3 community development organization create pipeline programs that will become a part of the institution’s curriculum offerings in advance of the rehabilitation of the Old Barracks Property.
Last year under the guidance of Operations Manager Amanda Sackey and the leadership of the VIAC Board of Directors led by Mary O’R. Dema, VIAC launched a successful six-week VAST summer enrichment program which immersed 10 St. Croix high school students in a learning experience which included 3D documentation, geocaching and LIDAR scanning technology, and hands-on trade skills in architecture/ engineering design through masonry, woodworking, art history, historic preservation, material science and social emotional learning. VIAC also launched its internship program which placed college-aged students in historic preservation workspaces to give exposure and authentic learning experiences to those interested in architecture, trades, and cultural preservation management careers. These programs will continue through 2025.
VIAC is engaging in authentic placekeeping this year as it continues to develop its Storytelling Project with research on the two centuries and a half year old property and the people who worked, lived, or went to school there. VIAC’s Storytelling Team, which includes Monique Clendinen Watson, Chalana Brown, Monica Marin, Anurie Oliver and Kevin Moolenaar is producing a video presentation

and lecture series and a curriculum to be shared in Virgin Islands history and civics classrooms that will be completed this year.
With a grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place program, VIAC is also engaged in a strategic planning project which seeks input from the St. Croix community on what stories it wants told in the cultural heritage museum space that will be part of the energized Old Barracks Property. VIAC is hosting a series of community gatherings to collect the stories that matter about St. Croix’s iconic neighborhoods, the craftsmen and women who built the towns and the people who made various properties come alive. VIAC will be listening for what people want and need in a cultural heritage center. Last November 18th, VIAC hosted the Reclaiming Our Built Heritage: Uncovering St. Croix Stories event which presented the restoration work of architect Gerville Larsen in Christiansted and Frandelle Gerard in Frederiksted. Attendees were also asked to share their memories of St. Croix neighborhoods which will be used to develop future exhibits in the cultural heritage museum space. During the February 2025 AgriFest, visitors to the VIAC booth were also encouraged to share their memories by filling out paper or online questionnaires.
On March 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at the UVI Medical Simulation Center, community members will again be invited to hear local historians Karen Thurland, George Tyson and others speak about built heritage and the importance of telling the stories about St. Croix’s iconic town neighborhoods.
at November event share memories of St.
neighborhoods.
Attendees will be led through a strategic planning exercise where they can give input into the process. VIAC plans in person and online opportunities throughout 2025 and 2026 for the people of St. Croix to contribute to this strategic planning project. If you want to contribute to this effort, visit https://viacstx.com/educational-resources/ to view our video and fill out our survey.
With regards to the rehabilitation of the Old Barracks Property, VIAC will be moving forward with the site stabilization of Buildings 1 and 2 in preparation for its full development as an educational center with a focus on built heritage, historic preservation, architecture, and the building arts of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. CONSTELLATIONS: UPPER CASE • Stars: Lower Case
Once the beautiful Virgin Island sky grows dark, look low in the northwest for a very bright star-like object. This is not a star, but the largest of all the planets, Jupiter. Higher in the sky is the bright red Mars, not as bright as Jupiter, but brighter than any surrounding stars. If you are awake before dawn, the very, very bright Venus will dominate the eastern sky. Nearby is another planet Saturn, bright, but dim when compared to Venus, the third brightest natural object in the sky, after the Sun and the Moon.
Returning to the evening sky, almost directly overhead is the bright star Regulus, the heart of Leo, the Lion. Regulus is also the point at the base of a backwards question mark. The top of the question mark is Leo’s head and a triangle of fainter stars toward the East marks the Lion’s hind quarters and tail. Don’t worry if you cannot see a Lion here, most people can’t either, but you should be able to find the backwards question mark.
If Leo does not look like a lion, why is it called Leo? Perhaps because long ago these stars were seen during the summer months when water in the outlying areas dried up and thus the lions would come down to the river. People lived near the river
and people and the lions did not get along. So, when you see the stars of the lion in the sky, look out for the real lions are around.
Looking north of Regulus and Leo, you will find one of the best-known star groups, the Big Dipper. Seven fairly bright stars which form a dipper or a cooking pot -- three stars mark the handle and four more the bowl. Some people know that if you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line away from the bowl, you come to the North Star. Now, remember, the North Star is not the brightest star in the sky. In fact, it really isn’t bright at all. It happens to be at a point in the heavens almost directly over the North Pole of the Earth. So, having found the North Star, if you did not know which way was North, you would now know.
The Big Dipper is part of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The bowl of the dipper is the bear's body, fainter stars mark the bear’s legs and head. And the three stars of the bowl? They mark the bear's long tail. There is only one problem, bears do not have long tails! According to one legend, a mighty hunter was fighting the bear, grabbed the bear by the tail and flung the bear into the heavens. In doing so, he stretched the bear's tail!
Go back to the Big Dipper once more. Follow the arc of the handle away from the Dipper to the bright star Arcturus and then speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes, the Herdsman. Spica is a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the Harvest.
The night of April 22nd to 23rd is the maximum of the Lyrid meteor shower. On a clear dark night you may see a dozen or so meteors or shooting stars per hour. While that is not an overwhelming number, it does mean that you are more likely to see a shooting star, especially if you look between midnight and dawn.
The evening of May 6th to 7th is the maximum of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower and on a good dark night you might see some 40 or so meteors or “shooting stars” per hour. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn. Unfortunately, this year the Moon will be just past Full and its brightness will overpower all but the brightest “falling stars.
The meteors produced by the Eta Aquarid meteor shower are caused by dust left behind by Halley’s Comet burning up as they race through the Earth’s atmosphere some 50 miles over your head.
