ST. CROIX A VIBE LIKE NO OTHER

Come, discover the unique culture and vibe of our island. St. Croix is home to historical sites, gorgeous beaches, resorts, golf courses, and a culinary scene named the 2025 Caribbean Culinary Destination of the Year. We can’t wait to warmly welcome you to our part of America’s Caribbean paradise.

COVERS FEATURES

IN EVERY ISSUE

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.

Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.

History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.

Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.

Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.

On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Sincerely,

The Virgin Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communi ties are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I en courage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offer ings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Is lands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and in dulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.

St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemo nes. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.

St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.

Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.

As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

GALLOWS BAY

Enso Indigo Home – 340-513-3195

Back in the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s, islanders and visitors devoured Java Wraps sarongs, clothes, and take-out decor. They’ve found a way to bring back those incredible textiles, create new designs, and mix it all with new-found objects. The name Enso says it all for them as a sacred Zen Buddha symbol representing strength and elegance and the manifestation of the artist at the moment of creation. This store will, no doubt, evolve into something very special for St. Croix. Located in Gallows Bay, in the orange Arawak building, with front and back entrances. Just Jamey @ Z Café

ZCafé is always hopping for lunch. We caught up for a chat with Chef Jamey Hughson, graduate of Culinary Academy in Seattle. This busy dad was having his own healthy Z-Café lunch after closing time, before picking the kids up from school. We talked about the freshest food, the price of eggs, catering, and the pig!

I always feel great after I eat here. What makes your food healthy?

Whole ingredients sourced locally is really the key. That way the foods’ natural can really shine. I use healthy oils, avoid deep frying and saturated fats; I eat off my own menu every day and want to stay healthy, and not get bored.

I create daily specials, depending on what’s fresh. My menu and specials de Caribbean, with a Mediterranean twist. Summer’s here, what’s your menu shift?

Summer is the slow season. I reduce the menu choices a bit to keep everything super fresh. We get a nice breeze in the courtyard at Pentheny, and I can see customers ordering more salads and really loving our fruit lemonades and watermelon juice. I try to do a lot of fresh juices to help people stay hydrated out there. If people feel good, and healthy after a meal with us, they’ll be back! For catered events, Mediterranean’s a great vibe for summer.

You have two adorable kids under 8. What do you cook for them? Are they picky eaters?

My daughter can be particularly particular, so I know how hard it can be to take your kids out with you. A lot of kids don’t want unusual ßavors or textures when the environment is novel, so I offer some simple favorites at the café that I know my kids love. If it’s not too busy, I can also whip up a request…

What’s your pro strategy for the rising cost of eggs?

Hard journalism here! My secret is to use local eggs from local farms! Better and cheaper than the imports..

What’s your favorite sleeper dish on the menu at Z Café?

The Caulißower Bowl is easily the winner. I roast the caulißower with homemade harissa, which is a Moroccan condiment. I add quinoa or couscous with garam masala, and fresh hummus with nuts, tomatoes and cukes and microgreens. Deep ßavors, healthy, and really comforting. People love it so much.

name reßects my passion for all kinds of charcuterie.

Yum! Thanks for the chat, chef.

Z-Café’s sparkling watermelon lemonade recipe

This delicious cooling treat makes a great mocktail. Follow the ratios: 2 parts watermelon juice, 2 parts cucumber water, 2 parts lemonade concentrate (one part lemon, one part simple syrup). Mix in a pitcher, add soda water to serve.

• from local farms (pg. 33): watermelon, lemons, cucumbers

• other ingredients: sugar, soda water

1. Make the simple syrup

2. Slice a cucumber into water and chill overnight

3. Blend and strain the watermelon

4. Squeeze the lemons and curl some zest for decoration

5. Pour following ratios above, or make a pitcher. Top with soda water and mix gently for the Þzz. Delicious!

Over the past few years, they have assembled a team of talent with the focus being to welcome guests to the hotel as if it’s their second home. ey! I’m an artist and photographer born and raised on St. Croix. My work is inspired by the vibrant culture, colors, and natural beauty of the island I call home. Through TuftCrucian, I create tufted rugs, wall hangings, and photography that blend Caribbean heritage with modern design, turning everyday pieces into textured, visual stories.

I stumbled into tufting during COVID—just to try something new—and honestly, it took off. It’s become a true labor of love (emphasis on the labor part!). These pieces take so much time—sometimes I catch myself wishing I picked an easier medium— but the process? It’s worth every loop and yarn.

For me, art should be seen, felt, and experienced. I want my rugs and wall hangings to ground a space, invite touch, and spark conversation. Most of my pieces are custom, and I love working with people to bring their ideas to life— whether we’re starting from a color palette or a fully-formed vision.

You can catch time lapses and behind-the-scenes looks at the process (yes, including the moments I ask myself why this medium?) over on TikTok @ TuftCrucian instagram @I_deh_yah. Through it all, I’m just here sharing the rhythms, textures, and soul of St. Croix. Maybe you’ll take a little piece of the island home with you.

David A. Berg

’m the founder of Blackwood Imaging, dedicated to celebrating the culture and artists of the Caribbean islands. As a native, I live, photograph, and edit just outside Frederiksted, St. Croix, on an old Danish plantation near my family home.

Through photography, I seek to capture the forgotten past of the Virgin Islands, as it reverberates through to the present. I’ve always been drawn to the hidden depths within each person, family, building, and cultural artifact that passes through my viewfinder. My work is archival in nature, aiming both to preserve the richness of Caribbean culture and share its beauty and complexity with the world.

I attended Mitchell College from 2005 to 2008 and earned a certification as a Professional Photographer from the Center for Digital Imaging and Arts at Boston University in 2009. I’ve exhibited my work for over a decade, in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the Caribbean, the United States, and internationally. My objective has always been to reach broad and inclusive audiences.

Whether through exhibitions or education, I continue to advocate, celebrate, and preserve Caribbean identity, history, and culture through the art of photography. In recent years, I’ve also cultivated a deep passion for underwater photography, which has become an extension of my desire to explore and reveal unseen worlds. I especially love working with people and offer the opportunity for individuals, couples, friends, and families to book underwater photography sessions with me through my website, www. blackwoodimaging.com. I love to capture the unique art of my subjects beneath the water’s surface—where movement, light, and emotion take on an entirely new form.

Our Danish Connection

The Scandinavian country of Denmark was among the European contenders for ownership of Caribbean islands and acquired St. Thomas in 1660, St. John in 1718, and St. Croix, purchased from France in 1733.

Denmark left its mark here in many ways that have contributed to a close relationship between Danes and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the 1917 Transfer, bringing thousands of Danish visitors. Examples of this closeness are:

• The handsome, still functioning 18th and 19th century architecture – official, commercial and private, built of Danish brick brought as ship ballast.

• Ruins of many plantation structures that once produced sugar and rum, particularly former windmills that ground sugar cane.

• The presence of four churches of the Danish Lutheran denomination, with special sections for Danish gravesites in two old cemeteries.

• Many African heritage and mixed blood families carrying Danish last names, even the use of historic Danish first names for Crucian children.

• A Friends of Denmark organization that enjoys exchange-visit festivals with its sister society in Denmark, the Danish West Indian Society.

• Access on the internet to over 5 million documents in the Danish archives relevant to the Danish West Indies, as our islands were called.

• A friendly Crucian population that welcomes and looks out for visiting Danes. If you happen to be a visiting Dane, we bid you Velkommen!

70 illustrated articles from the pages of this magazine, 2009-2019, documenting in English and Danish the legacy of Denmark’s imprint on our culture. Undercover Books and Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, $20.

MEANS CELEBRATING

A

s it happens, we enjoy two important dates in our history, the first being the July 3 ,1848 Emancipation Declaration that took place when we were part of the Danish West Indies, this year celebrating its 175th anniversary

The next day, July 4, marks that the United States we have been part of since 1917 has experienced 247 years of independence from Britain. Both events are celebrated locally, albeit in different ways As a matter of fact, another midsummer date of special meaning to people of African ancestry, has become a federal holiday - Juneteenth, marking the June 19, 1865, Black Emancipation Day in the United States.

While in principle the emancipation of the large number of enslaved individuals working in the sugar cane fields on St Croix would have been wor thy of celebration, the restrictions that accompanied the working conditions for the large number of agricultural workers made the freedom it supposedly entailed almost moot, eventually leading 30 years later to a revolt known as The Fireburn by the plantation workers We no longer have a sugar cane economy and, happily, far better living conditions for all, for which we can thank the United States, thus giving us good reason to celebrate July 4.

Emancipation Day celebrations feature stor ytelling, Quadrille dancing, Quelbe music, Crucian food, local ar t and histor y, and manner of dress known as madras. Expect traditional fireworks at the Pier, and a time for family cookouts or beachgoing. See Event Calendar listings for details.

There is a special midsummer celebration, a residue from Danish times carried out by a local friendship organization known as St Croix Friends of Denmark. It is known as St. Hans Aften (St. John’s Eve). In Denmark it was originally held as a pseudo-religious holiday with a bonfire that chased a witch away on her broomstick to a mountain in nor thern Germany for a witches’ gathering. It is held here on June 24, with a bonfire, but guaranteed no witches! As a purification ceremony, par ticipants write on cards that they toss into the bonfire all bad habits they wish to rid themselves of. Incidentally, many Latino communities have a symbolic beachside purification rite in honor of St. John.

So, whatever your choice for tak ing advantage of your leisure time in St Croix, we wish you a happy summer with us

7 FLAG HISTORY HISTORIC & HELPFUL INFORMATION

HISTORY is what this island has an abundance of, going back several thousand years. Back then, the Amerindian population that had migrated here from South America called it Ay Ay. A tribe known as Caribs lent their name to the region and was encountered at Salt River in 1493 by the first Europeans, the 17ship fleet of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the new world. He claimed the island for Spain and called it Santa Cruz, the Spanish version of its present name.

Known as the Danish West India and Guinea Company, it excelled in sugar cultivation and export made possible by slave trade from West Africa, a necessity for developing a large-scale operation of sugar cane harvests, for which this island was ideally suited thanks to its terrain and rainfall.

Over the following centuries, many European nations started exploiting the Caribbean archipelago, with the British, Dutch, and French joining Spain in taking possession of the rich resources found in some of the islands, battling pirates that posed a dramatic challenge to the treasures derived from mineral resources. But agriculture, in the form of sugar cane cultivation, turned out to be a winning formula, as sugar, and its by-product rum, were incredibly valuable crops.

In no time, the island was transformed, with forests giving way to planted sugar cane fields by thousands of enslaved persons who, after being brought here under horrific conditions, toiled in the fields under the hot sun. The island’s cane fields and accompanying estate structures were owned by an assortment of nationalities, with the English, Scots and Irish dominating, but the military and administration was run by Danes, after the island ownership was conferred to the Danish king in 1771.

Soon, a lot of money was made here, but at a high cost of human life. The island posed health risks from tropical diseases and poor hygienic standards and opposition to the cruel treatment of the enslaved eventually brought about emancipation in 1848, several years after the British-owned islands had initiated it. But the fact that cane sugar was not so valuable since beet sugar now competed with it made conditions worse, and a revolt in 1878 led to further decline.

Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix has two towns—Christiansted at the center on the North Shore and Frederiksted at the West End. The Caribbean Sea, which surrounds the island, is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast.

Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.

Parking in Christiansted is limited. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted is the 4-lane, divided Melvin H. Evans Highway. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted.

DRIVE LEFT WORSHIP

St. Croix’s history is mirrored in its old church structures. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population.

Under changing ownership by the Dutch, British and French, including a brief ownership by the Knights of Malta, this island did not prosper, and it was sparsely colonized. The French, that owned it from the mid-1600’s and gave it its present name, actually abandoned it around 1700 having failed at developing a viable plantation economy. For over 30 years St. Croix returned to its natural state, when a business enterprise of the little Scandinavian nation of Denmark, that since 1666 had taken possession of St. Thomas and later St. John to the north of St. Croix, in 1733 made the decision to expand and purchase this island from the French.

So the islands of the Danish West Indies, as the three were called, were a sad sight and, in the early 20th century when WW1 was underway, the United States took interest in us for our strategic location, particularly as the Panama Canal had just been completed, and Germany was threatening to take possession of us. At a price of $25 million in gold, the transfer of the islands, to be known as the United States Virgin Islands, took place on March 31, 1917. And, the rest is History, of a different kind.

The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home.

There are 150 churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Muslim mosque, to name a few. A church listing can be found in the CHURCHES section of our local phonebook.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.

Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.

Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.

The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.

Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.

The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.

Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.

Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.

Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”

Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Frederiksted Map Frederiksted Map

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.

A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.

The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.

The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.

Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .

The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

WEST END ATTRACTIONS

Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. St. George Village Botanical Garden also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.

Big Move E

nzo is a bright, busy toddler who cannot get enough of running on the beach. Or making “brrrrrmmm”sounds every time he sees anything with an engine. His parents, Alyssa and Larken, are also loving the always-in-motion, creative adventure of living and working on St. Croix. These two 30-something university professors met at UC Davis, and relocated to the USVI from Tacoma, WA with dogs and baby. They’re coming up on their second island-versary, and Christina checked in with this family of ßect on their big move to St. Croix and how they have

What felt challenging about your move to St. Croix?

It wasn’t too bad, actually. Getting our bigger dog here was logistically tricky, but people here in the animal rescue community helped us it out. We didn’t come with a lot of stuff. We’re still getting to know the island and just moved to a new rental.

We want to help local farmers achieve their goals and strengthen and grow the island’s food sovereignty. Meaning, we can reduce dependence on food imports. Did you visit and research and do due diligence before coming to St. Croix?

We actually didn’t, really. Larken’s work needed him here right away. We’ve done a lot of traveling, so we Þgured we would just keep our expectations low, and assumed it would be signiÞcantly different from life in the US mainland. We were surprised to Þnd that many basics, conveniences and the availability of things in stores etc. were very similar.

What ended up feeling different for you?

To be so close to the beach… you can be anywhere on the island and be able to

What’s notably different about St. Croix from Tacoma?

We don’t miss the cold rain of the northwest. And, the history here is so deep. I was raking compost on a farm and found chaney. The land has history, connections to the suffering of the past and hope for the future.

L: The USVI is unique within the US – any event or place is an easy driving or walking distance away.

What’s been the best part of moving here?

A: The warm and welcoming people in the community. It’s hard to be so far from family, but we found a community of good people here so quickly… From one initial friend, we met a ton of great people. We love how everywhere we go, we see a familiar friendly face. The community here is cohesive, much more so than other places we have lived..

Tell me about your work life.

A: We both have doctorates in agricultural research. Our professional focus is supporting farming in resource limited environments. My days vary a lot and my brain loves to be busy, I am often switching from mothering to grant writing to data analysis coding to working as a volunteer on local farms; I’m assisting in water resource research as well as teaching ag business and cooperative management classes at UVI’s School Of Agriculture. The best part of teaching is what I learn: the local context of hearing from experienced local VI farmers. Farming on St. Croix is pretty different from most other places, but it has some similarities to small traditional community farming I learned about in California. Larken teaches at the School Of Agriculture also, working with and studying systems for diminutive livestock; aquaponic Þsh, shellÞsh, and bees!

Advice for others thinking about the big move?

A&L: Slow down and enjoy the pace. Accept the potholes and detours.

A, E & L’s Favorite STX spots to take visiting family…

1. Shopping at the local farmers’ markets - exotic tropical fruits to try, friendly farmers to chat with!

2. Sailing trip to Buck Island - the only underwater National Park we’ve ever visited! Amazing snorkel adventure.

3. Hiking out to Jacks & Isaac Bay on the east end - the maintained trails are so gorgeous and peaceful. The beach looks like a movie set. And we love long walks!

Empowering Students: The GAINS Program

ood Hope Country Day School (GHCDS)’s commitment to student success extends beyond academic achievement. Our GAINS (Getting Ahead in School) Program ensures personalized academic support for each student and their diverse needs, empowering them to reach their full potential.

A dedicated collaboration of professionals work together to develop customized support plans for each student’s unique challenges and strengths. In this environment, every student can succeed and feel supported throughout their educational journey – academically, socially and emotionally.

The GAINS Program has four key components. Language Learning Support, with specialized assistance to students needing to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills, ensures they can fully engage with their academic work and participate in classroom discussions with confidence.

Executive Functioning Coaching helps students develop crucial skills like organization, time management, and self-regulation. This coaching empowers students to become more independent and confident in managing their academic responsibilities, preparing them for success both in school and beyond.

GAINS also offers School Counseling and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Support, recognizing the importance of mental and emotional well-being in academic success. By providing counseling services and fostering SEL skills, the GAINS Program helps students build resilience, cope with challenges, and strengthen interpersonal relationships.

Math Learning Support ensures that students who may struggle with math concepts receive targeted help to reinforce their understanding and improve their performance.

The GAINS Program supports our students holistically, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed. With personalized support and ongoing assessment, each student can move confidently toward a bright future.

ST. CROIX Sky Watch

JUNE / JULY 2025

Our clear skies are perfect for star gazing!

VIEW THE MAP SO THAT THE NORTH INDICATOR IS FACING NORTH

Constellation names are in upper case. Star and planet names in lower case. The sun, moon, planets and stars all rise in the east and set in the west.

frequent island visitor.

Sunrise and sunset times are based on the 15th of each month.

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer begins on June 20th. The Sun will be at its northernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer.

The Earth will be farthest from the Sun (aphelion) on July 3rd. Obviously, how far the Earth is from the Sun is not the cause of the seasons. In fact, when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

As the Earth goes around the Sun, sometimes the North Pole of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun -- summer up north. Well, if the North Pole is tilted toward the Sun, the South Pole must be tilted away -- winter in the Southern Hemisphere. When the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the South Pole is tilted toward the Sun and it is summer for them. In between the poles are not tilted toward or away from the Sun and we have the in between seasons of spring and fall.

After the Sun sets in the West and the sky grows dark, the first star-like object to appear is almost due West and low in the sky – this is the red planet Mars. Higher in the western sky you can find the bright star Arcturus, in the constellation of Boötes, the Herdsman. Arcturus makes Boötes easy to find

and that is good, because these stars really do not look too much like a man.

If it is a dark, clear night, to the East of Arcturus look for a semi-circle of fairly faint stars. This is the Northern Crown is one of the few star groups that actually looks like its name.

Looking to the southwest you can see the bright star Spica, a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the goddess of the Harvest. Low in the southern sky another bright star is found, Antares, the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Perhaps you can find fainter stars that make up the Scorpion's long curved tail. The Scorpion's claws are formed from still fainter stars spreading out toward the West. While these faint stars do form the Scorpion's claws, they are actually the stars of another constellation, Libra, the Scales.

According to legend, Orion was a mighty hunter. Orion boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. But Orion was such a great hunter that he was placed in the sky, as was the scorpion. However, you never see Orion and the Scorpion in the sky at the same time.

The eastern sky is dominated by three bright stars: The highest is Vega in Lyra, the Harp; slightly

to the south is Altair in Aquila, the Eagle; and toward the northeast and lower in the sky is Deneb, the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see a Swan here. Faint stars form the Swan’s body and long neck and others the bird's wings.

Cygnus is flying South along a hazy band of light. This is the light from billions of stars so far away that you cannot see each one as a point of light. This is the Milky Way, our city of stars in the universe. All of the stars you can see, including the closest star, the Sun, are part of this Milky Way galaxy of stars. Follow the band to the South and you come to Scorpius, the Scorpion.

Wait until midnight or later and the bright planet Saturn will dominate the eastern sky. Just before dawn the very bright planet Venus will be easily spotted in the eastern sky.

The night of July 28th to 29th is the maximum of the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. Meteors, or shooting stars, are pebble sized matter burning up some 30 miles over your head. This year the thin crescent Moon will set early, leaving a dark sky for observing perhaps some 20 meteors or shooting stars per hour. The best time to look for these meteors is between midnight and dawn in the eastern sky.
