Dear Visitor,

Welcome to St. Croix, a land of spectacular beauty, rich cultural diversity and intriguing history. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with 84 square miles of rolling hillsides, pristine beaches and a tropical rainforest, St. Croix offers endless opportunities to pursue your heart’s desire and create a unique vacation experience.

Adventurers and nature lovers can spend time hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or golfing at one of our championship golf courses. Scuba diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day. For a more relaxed approach, swim in the crystalline waters of Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S.

History buffs can experience St. Croix’s vibrant history through its architecture, historic landmarks, food, music and traditions. Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, Forts Christiansvaern and Frederik or tour the Botanical Garden of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Early risers can catch a picturesque sunrise at Point Udall, the easternmost point in the United States.

Christiansted and Frederiksted, our main seaside towns, are a shopper’s nirvana with charming boutiques offering everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to colorful local art. Visitors enjoy a generous $1,600 duty-free shopping allowance.

Our chic hotels, resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfast inns will pamper you with warm hospitality, while our world-class restaurants tempt your taste buds with local and international menus. St. Croix’s wide array of the entertainment choices, including fairs, festivals, live concerts and gaming venues ensure that the fun never ends.

On behalf of the Department of Tourism, I hope you have an amazing vacation experience in St. Croix. Thank you for choosing the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Sincerely,

The Virgin Islands Of The United States OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.

St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.

St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.

St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.

Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels.

As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

workforce development for island filmmaking lights, camera, connection Local Art Local Art FILMMAKING

Anew generation of teen Þlmmakers on St. Croix is building their storytelling skills and sharpening their technical ability at CFEG’s summer Þlm program (and planning red carpet ‘Þts!). An island soap opera shooting on location is turning local residents into celebrities. And one local Þlmmaker is building her own masterclass – to produce her next movie, with a crew of homegrown island talent

Many island old timers can tell you that scenes from movies like the Island of Dr. Moreau (1977) and Shawshank Redemption (1994), and the TV show Miami Vice (1984), brought in Hollywood stars and production companies who used the beautiful, scenic, less developed island of St. Croix as a backdrop Þlming location - standing in for other places.

A new group of Þlmmakers are coming home from the mainland US and shooting on location here on St. Croix, to celebrate the island more intimately, to expand the voices of island residents, and reveal more personal stories of island life rooted in the unique Crucian experience.

Expanding The Capacity

most well known Þlms, the documentary Sugar Pathways, tells a very personal story of her family’s emigration to St. Croix from Vieques, off the coast of Puerto Rico. Another of her Þlms, Soléne, is a love story set on St. Croix. Her production company, Cane Bay Films, has created a fully funded, free professional development workforce training workshop annually in the month of October, for Þlm professionals on St. Croix, using the very latest equipment and industry veterans to train with (use the QR code on page 5 to learn more about the program, which is free and open to anyone in the territory over 18). Bermúdez-Ruiz is in production for a new narrative Þlm about human trafÞcking. She will staff up her Þlm crew by making the intensive technical Þlmmaking training available.

Local public television camera operator and Þlmmaker George Cannon III attended the Cane Bay Films Workforce Training Program in 2023, and commented on the gear assembled: “The equipment was truly advanced, industry-standard for us to learn on. There were experienced professionals there to guide us through the instruction. I especially honed my skills in the grip and gaffer areas.”

Empowering Teen Voices & Trajectories

George W. Cannon III started Blue Tarp Productions in 2022 with Diana Dias and other collaborators in his island family and friends circle, when he returned home to St. Croix during the pandemic. He had just completed his MBA in NYC. Cannon’s parents have given him a strong sense of social justice, of service to others and a drive to create education opportunities. Cannon wants to assure that there are opportunities for youth on St. Croix to learn creative skills to work toward future employment in a creative industry while earning a comfortable living.

Blue Tarp’s award-winning short Þlms written and created by teens and young adults in Þlm training programs include Bulletproof Dreams, Grace, and Fall. Self-taught, Cannon has secured Þlm camera work with local public television afÞliate, WTJX, and is an experienced camera operator and director. His Blue Tarp Þve week summer intensive program for teen lmmakers, partnering with the Center For Educational Growth (CFEG), is in its second year at CMCArts in summer 2025. “Blue Tarp’s purpose is to open up pathways and show our young people that creative routes to life are available! They are full of amazing ideas and I love giving them a platform to reinvent representation of Virgin Islanders on the screen. For last year’s summer Þve week intensive course, we had a red carpet premiere screening at Caribbean Cinemas, a discussion with the Þlmmakers, and it was a soldout community celebration,” Cannon says.

Capturing Culture

Kevin (Moolenaar) FaKtor is a Crucian Þlmmaker, comic and performer, aka the “VI Justin Bieber” ;-) and his production company, Team FaKtornize, has created a binge-worthy, high-production-value web Þlm series titled SAND that offers up a representation of Virgin Islanders on the screen not often

The level of artistry and creativity on St. Croix knows no bounds. Known as the Twin City island, we are off the beaten path of the rest of the island chain; and so have developed an artisanal, handcrafted way of thinking about our goods, our food, our choices and our culture. Wander quaint covered porticos and lively streets – on one of St. Croix’s guided tours or on your own – enjoy the waves lapping at the waterfront as you sip a drink or a meal between browsing. In Christiansted to the east, through mid-island’s historic buildings and all the way to Frederiksted in the west, pop into art galleries, clothing and jewelry stores, gift shops and sports stores. You’ll enjoy a day discovering the stories of our island entrepreneurs and multi-generational family businesses, and finding a special treasure or two. Don’t forget to practice your “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” or “Good night!”

CHRISTIANSTED

Chefs and cooks and brewmasters on St. Croix are intimately acquainted with our farms and fishermen, and generationally linked to traditions. There is something about the vibe of our Twin City island that creates passionate ‘flavor artists’. Locally grown seems to have been invented here. Between our distilleries and our wide variety of dining experiences – from roadside stands and beach shacks to fine dining – even St. Thomians come here for the FOOD! Foodies love St. Croix for the wide variety of deep and unique island food traditions and fusions: vegan Ital yabba pot cooking, our West Indian Trini flavors, the Latin fusion of the DR and Vieques, plus a fresh tropical take on familiar flavors like Asian, Mexican, American Bistro. We have options for every budget and to fill every belly, from beachside to the rainforest. We say it loud and celebrate our flavors: our guided food tours and food festivals and markets throughout the year, food trucks, and the Agricultural Fair in February. If you hear someone say “I love you like COOK FOOD,” you know they love you a LOT! Be sure to stop into a local bakery – you’ll find them in Christiansted, Frederiksted and mid-island – and take a stand in the Tart Wars – are you team Coconut, team Guava or team Pineapple?

STEAL SOME TIME & GET IN OR ON THE WATER!

BUCK ISLAND CHARTERS WITH CAPTAIN CARL OR CAPTAIN HEINZ

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Captain Heinz, born in Austria, a beautiful country of mountains and lakes but no ocean, decided to see more of the world and learned to sail while working in Bermuda racing sailboats during his free time.

In 1964 Heinz saw his dreamboat sail into Bermuda – a trimaran design that sailed three times faster than the mono-hulls he had been racing. He met the owner/ designer Arthur Piver and arranged to have one built in England, a 30-footer, and named her Teroro (Polynesian for Sun God). In 1966, he and his good friend Peter sailed her from England to Barbados in 21 days although, at that time, trimarans and catamarans were considered experimental boats and not widely accepted by the sailing world as safe ocean crossing vessels because of how much faster they went than monohulls.

Navigation was accomplished via dead reckoning (no

GPS or other technology like we have today). During their crossing, Heinz observed so much floating trash that it caused him to be concerned environmentally and has always relied on wind power to sail his boats since then. He was already thinking green in those days!

After sailing from island to island, he found the beautiful port of Christiansted in 1968 and raised his three children—Sarah, Melanie, and Carl – with his wife Mary. In 1985 Teroro was replaced by 42’ Teroro II, the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River.

Carl followed his father’s passion after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years and now has his own boat, Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. Carl loves nature, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, and kite boarding and is ready for any water sport when weather conditions permit.

He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard Teroro II and Dragonfly and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. The boats are located at Green Cay Marina.

Be Prepared!

June

1 - Nov 30

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the peak occurring between mid-August and late October.

Hurricanes are Massive Storm Systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and tornadoes. Here a few basic things to think about.

 Register for Emergency Alerts and Notifications of potential safety hazards.

 Know the difference between the NWS “Watches” and “Warnings.” A watch lets you know that weather conditions are favorable for a hazard to occur. It means “be on guard!” A warning requires immediate action. This means a weather hazard is imminent.

 Download a printable VI Hurricane Tracking Map on the VITEMA website below. Remember that St. Croix is at 17/64.

 Know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) and plan where you can stay or supply your house for several days.

 Put together a Disaster Supply Kit, take pictures of important docs and belongings.

 Make a plan to keep your beloved pets safe and talk with family and friends about your plan if a hurricane strikes.

 Trim or remove damaged trees or limbs in your yard. Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts. Secure and reinforce your roof, windows, and doors if necessary.

 Purchase a portable or install a generator for use outdoors during power outages.

DRIVE LEFT

Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic flows from the left side of the road!

St. Croix has two towns, Christiansted at the center on the Northshore and Frederiksted at the West End, connected by the Melvin H. Evans highway. The Caribbean Sea, surrounding the island, is always there guiding you along roads that wind the coast.

Car rental agencies offer Jeeps, SUVs, vans, sedans, and trucks. They come with a full tank of gas and should be returned full! The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts.

There are two parking lots in Christiansted, both with fees. One is the NPS lot next to the Fort, open from 8am-5pm, M-F. The other, on the corner of Strand and King Cross Streets, has extended hours. Check our Maps for more details, Pages 54-58.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.

Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.

Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.

The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.

Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.

The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.

Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.

Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.

Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”

Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

Frederiksted Map Frederiksted Map

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.

A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.

The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.

The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.

Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .

The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

WEST END ATTRACTIONS

Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. St. George Village Botanical Garden also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.
