Laurel B&G Club ‘Remember the Titans’ By Tony E. Windsor Though his body is almost 40 years older than it was during his high school playing days in Virginia, Darryl “Blue” Stanton was in very impressive form as he ran, caught and passed the football in Laurel recently. Stanton, an original T.C. Williams High School “Titan,” was in Laurel with former teammates to support programming at the Western Sussex Boys & Girls Club at Laurel. The Titans high school football team’s 1971 season in Alexandria, Va. was the focus of the 2000 Walt Disney movie, “Remember the Titans,” starring Denzel Washington and Will Patton. Stanton and former teammate Julius “Big Ju” Campbell were both in Laurel on Wednesday, July 28. Stanton and Campbell were featured characters in the movie. Campbell’s role was played in the movie by actor Wood Harris and Stanton’s by Earl Poitier, a distant relative of actor Sidney Poitier. Joining Stanton and Campbell at the Laurel Boys & Girls Club was another 1971 Titan, Bob Luckett, who was an offensive lineman for the team. The visit by the former Titan team members was coordinated by 1971 T.C. Williams High School football coach, Bill Yoast, whose character was a primary part of “Remember the Titans.” Actor Will Patton played Yoast in the movie. Coach Yoast was also scheduled to be in Laurel with his former players, but an emergency, non-life threatening medical procedure resulted in his having to cancel both the Laurel visit and an appearance at the Delaware State Fair. “I have asked the players to keep the scheduled appearances,” Yoast said a few days prior to the visit. “They have a wonderful message for these young people and it is important that the kids get a chance to meet them.” At the Laurel Boys & Girls Club’s Teen Center, which is referred to by the youth as “The Hut,” the three “Titans” met with more than 25 teens that heard their life skills message

and asked questions, mainly about the “Remember the Titans” movie? Bob Luckett, who is an Ocean City, Md. Policeman, explained to the youth that the movie focused on the relationship between two Titan players, Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell. Prior to the 1971 football season, Bertier a white player and Campbell a black player, had attended different segregated schools. The movie demonstrated how the two players started out with animosity toward one another, but eventually became best friends. Luckett told the youth gathered at The Hut that there is a powerful message in that story. “Don’t form opinions about people based on the fact that they are a different color than you, or they speak differently than you or that they wear their hair different. “Get to know people. Talk to them. Learn about what’s inside that person. This is what we did back in 1971. Now, today after nearly 40 years these two guys (Stanton and Campbell) are still like brothers to me,” he said. Campbell told the audience that

the racial tension was actually less between the players at T.C. Williams High School, and more an issue within the community. “I remember when we started the season, I would look up into the stands and see the white parents sitting in one area and the black parents sitting somewhere else,” he said. “By the middle of the season I started seeing white and blacks sitting together, cheering us on. That is the impact that our team had on the people in the community.” Darryl “Blue” Stanton took notice of The Hut rules that were posted on the walls throughout the center. Being told that the rules were actually developed by the teens themselves, Stanton lauded their ability to recognize the importance of rules and guidelines in life. “Rules are important,” he said. “We need structure in life. If you follow the rules and regulations you are far less likely to have any problems. It is simply being willing to recognize and do what is right.” Questions asked of the players by the teens were varied. Stanton was asked how he got the nickname, Continued on page 3
