Laurel voters approve referendum By Lynn R. Parks Laurel School Board president Lois Hartstein is “absolutely thrilled” that voters have approved the Laurel School District’s plan to build two new schools. Last week’s referendum on the tax hike needed to support the $117 million building plan was approved by a narrow margin, 1,214 to 1,200. “We worked very hard to get this passed,” Hartstein said. “But the district really needs these improvements.” “This is a new day for our children and our community,” added superintendent John McCoy. “This is just the beginning of the revitalization of

Our new schools will be a great draw for businesses and a great draw for parents.” A second question on the referendum ballot, whether the district could spend an additional $4 million to upgrade athletic fields, did not pass. The vote was 1,128 for and 1,265 against. Hartstein said that she wasn’t surprised by the failure of the second part of the referendum. “That was kind of the feeling that we had gotten from voters, that they knew we needed schools but that they weren’t so supportive of sports fields,”

she said. “I am very happy that we split the vote into two questions; otherwise, we could very well have walked away from this without new schools.” This was the second referendum that the district has held this year. In March, a $137 million plan to build a new 700-student high school, a new 700-student middle school and a 1,200-student elementary school, as well as to spruce up athletic fields and to renovate the central part of the current middle school for a district office, was turned down by a 1,444 to 1,241 vote.
