Best of the Beach Art Auction June 14 Beebe Medical Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Best of the Beach Art Auction, Dinner & Dance will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, under a tent on the grounds of Beebe Healthcare’s Health Campus, located on Rt. 24 in Rehoboth Beach.

The annual Best of the Beach fundraiser galvanizes community support for both Beebe Healthcare and the Rehoboth Art League. This important fundraising event is billed as the most enjoyable evening of the summer season.

The featured artist will be Laura Hickman with her painting “View from Savage’s Ditch Rehoboth Bay.” Hickman attended Hood College, Trinity College’s Barbieri Center and graduated with an MFA in printmaking, painting and drawing from the University of Delaware.

After teaching at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Savannah College of Art and Design, Hickman returned home to Bethany Beach to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time artist. She has exhibited widely in the Mid-Atlantic region and has had two exhibitions in Germany.

This year, Big Fish Grill will cater and the band Remedy will keep partygoers on the dance floor. In addition to the showcase live auction, the evening will include a traditional silent auction featuring art and gift items. A new twist for silent auction bidding this year is wireless bidding on your own smart phone.

Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing and provide them with a simulation manikin to advance training and experience. A Simulation Trainer is a life-size manikin and software system that performs and reacts like a real life patient.

running Festival features Dover mile, Colonial 5K Do you have what it takes to conquer the Colonial Rotary Club’s Dover Running Festival?

The fastest one-mile race in Delaware, the Dover Mile, returns on Flag Day on Saturday, June 14. This one-mile event is USATF certified and there is also a walk/fun run. New to this year’s event is the inaugural Colonial 5K. This rain or shine event begins with registration in front of W.T. Smithers restaurant on South State Street and Loockerman Street at 8 a.m.

Individual pre-registration is until June 7. To run both events the cost is $35 ($40 day of the event). For runners interested only in the Colonial 5K, the cost is $20 ($25 day of the event) or $15 for the Dover Mile ($20 day of the event). The ART Project consists of 4-foot “sculptures” of the classic yacht Augusta built by Milford’s Vinyard Boat Yard in 1927. The “Second Fleet” brings the total to 12 and will be displayed permanently along the Mispillion River and, if funding is available, the last six will be in place next year.

HONORARY MAYOR - Over 200 people attended the Central Delaware Chamber’s Sunset Business Mixer on April 30, at the AMC Museum at DAFB. Business Digest SBA launches accelerator competition

The Small Business Administration is launching a $2.5 million competition for accelerators and other entrepreneurial ecosystem models to compete for monetary prizes of $50,000 each. The deadline to apply is Aug. 2.

The judging panel will give particular attention to applicants that fill geographic gaps in the accelerator and entrepreneurial ecosystem space. Through this competition, the SBA looks to support the development of accelerators and thus startups in parts of the country where there are fewer conventional sources of access to capital (i.e., venture capital and other investors).

The SBA also seeks accelerators which are run by and support women or other underrepresented groups. Lastly, special consideration will be given to any accelerator models which support manufacturing.

Brake named to board

WSFS Financial Corporation, the parent company of WSFS Bank, has announced that Francis B. “Ben” Brake Jr. was elected to the Board of Directors at the Brake Annual Meeting of Stockholders recently.

Brake is president and chief marketing officer of Epic Research, LLC, a company he co-founded in 2007 that specializes in marketing services for clients in the consumer electronics, financial services and airline industries, as well as other Fortune 500 companies.

With more than 20 years in the financial services industry, Brake has held numerous executive management positions. He resides in Swarthmore, Pa. with his wife and children.

Uzin Utz breaks ground in Dover

Germany-based flooring company Uzin Utz AG has broken ground on its first U.S.-based dry mortar plant. The 53,000 square foot facility will anchor the

Garrison Oak Technical Park in Dover.

Uzin Utz was awarded a Delaware Strategic Fund Performance Grant and a Capital Expenditure Grant, and plans to create 23 jobs at its new facility in Dover.

In addition to Uzin Utz, Garrison Oak Technical Park will also soon be home to The Garrison Energy Center, Calpine Corp.’s 309-megawatt combined-cycle electric generating facility. The facility is slated to be ready for commercial use by June 2015.

Tidewater Utilities tournament

Four Delaware veteran-related service organizations will be the beneficiaries of proceeds from Tidewater Utilities’ seventh Annual Charity Golf Tournament to be held Monday, Aug. 11, at Heritage Shores Golf Course in Bridgeville.

The tournament will benefit the Delaware Veterans Trust Fund, Delaware Veterans Home, Delaware USO and Sussex County Habitat for Humanity.

Grants for crop promotion

The Delaware Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program through June 9.

The program, funded through the federal Farm Bill, covers products known as specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops, including floriculture.

Delaware has just over $336,000 available for grants, an increase of more than $100,000 over last year. Projects may run for one to three years.

Farmers among most productive

Delaware farmers are among the most productive and efficient in the nation, with the First State remaining first in the nation in the value of agricultural products sold per acre, according to U.S. Census of Agriculture data.

Sussex County remains the No. 1

broiler chicken-producing county in the nation, a position that dates back to the 1940s, and Delaware retained its spot as the state with the largest amount of lima bean acres harvested, according to 2012 Census of Agriculture data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The new data also shows that agriculture remains Delaware’s largest single land use, with 41 percent of Delaware’s land (or 508,652 acres) in farming – 24 percent of New Castle County, 46 percent of Kent County and 45 percent of Sussex County.

Sussex County again recorded the top number nationally in broiler chicken production, with 174 million birds produced in 2012. Polk County, Texas, ranked second, with 125 million birds.

Fulton Financial reports earnings

Fulton Financial Corporation reported net income of $41.8 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2014, compared to $42.1 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of 2013.

“We were pleased to report another quarter of solid earnings and good returns on assets and equity,” said E. Philip Wenger, Chairman, CEO and president.

As the most rural county in the nation’s second smallest state, Sussex County doesn’t always garner a lot of clout, especially when it comes to issues of national interest.

With more than lucks a million members, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) is America’s largest trade association, one that carries a lot of weight when speaking with a unified voice. And in 2014, one of that organization’s directors hails from Sussex County.

A former president of the Sussex County Association of Realtors (SCAOR), Lewes Commercial Realtor Bill Lucks began his appointment with the national organization’s board of directors on Jan. 1. He has been tasked with helping shape national policy and procedures for the rest of his three-year term.

You can accomplish more in the same amount of time

By Andy Singer One of the most valuable resources managers, executives or anyone else has is time. No matter have much capital, inventory, tooling, real estate or other resources you may have, you can not purchase more time, you can not create more time, but you can utilize time management skills to use the time you do have more effectively. A question that often arises in our time management training class, Master of Time, is how much time can I save? Let’s take a look at one way to answer this question.

Imagine if by using time management skills you could save five minutes 12 times each business day. Five minutes may not sound like much, but if you can consistently gain back five minutes, 12 times each business day, the resulting time saved multiplies exponentially.

Since there are five days in each week and 52 weeks in each year, it’s simply a matter of multiplying these factors. The equation would be: 5 (minutes) x 12 x 5 (business days/week) x 52 (weeks/year) = 15,600 minutes per year. Since there are 60 minutes in each hour, that would equal 260 hours each year now available. By saving five minutes a few times each day, you can carve out another 260 hours each year to do what ever you want with. This is the power of time management.

Think about what you can accomplish with an extra 260 hours per year.

You can use the extra time to get more done than your competition, you can use the time to enhance your personal relationships, you can use the time for a vacation, or you can use it for a combination of all of these. The first step of course, is to begin. Learning to be efficient about managing your time allows you to be more effective and to accomplish more than you ever imagined. There are a number of aspects to time management skills, too many to cover in this single column, but one key strategy is to learn to focus on what is truly important.

the 80/20 rule. As an executive you need to assure that you understand that 20% of your activities provide 80 percent of the results and focus on those 20 percent. I call these HPAs, or high payoff activities. You need to focus on these activities and learn the required techniques to assure you minimize time bandits.

Focusing on your most important activities combined with determination can be a powerful combination. Rocky Marciano was a unique master of time.

He was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world from Sept. 23, 1952 to April 27, 1956. Rocky Marciano was legendary for his singular focus on training for months before a fight and exercising every day of the year.

He would shut out the rest of the world and train continuously before any major

fight. The result of this intense focus on his HPAs was an astonishing record. He was untied and undefeated through his career which finished 49 – 0 upon his retirement. Throughout history only a few boxers have retired with this type of record. Clearly time management skills are critical to assure success no matter what type of business you are involved with. Rocky Marciano’s success shows what is possible through focus, commitment and determination.

The power of time management is that while you can not change time, you can change your behavior and use the time you have more efficiently.

Travel writers learn why ‘Beaches are Just the Beginning’ Southern Delaware Tourism recently hosted nine travel journalists from four states and the District of Columbia on an outdoor adventure themed familiarization tour. The group represented a variety of publications including Recreation News, The News Journal and Coastal Living.

Writers attended a surf fishing clinic at Indian River Life Saving Station followed by a trip across the dune to test their new skills. They traveled down the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal aboard The Cape Water Taxi from Lewes to the Hyatt Place in Dewey Beach where the group was hosted, attended a Stand Up Paddleboard demonstration by DelMarVa Board Sport Adventures, were hosted by naturalists at Trap Pond and Cape Henlopen State Parks, and toured Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Park visits included tips on nature photography from Kevin Fleming and birding hints from Sharon Lynn of the Sussex Bird Club. The group was also updated on the nearly completed Gordon’s Pond Trail, and were treated to a tour of the Lewes Historical Society Complex.

Writers participated in an outdoor adventure of another sort when they took the Eating Rehoboth Tour, a walking tour with stops at five of Rehoboth’s outstanding culinary destinations for tastes and sips and meet and greets with local chefs. Dinner speakers included Linda Parkowski, director of Tourism for the State of Delaware who introduced writers to the newly launched Delaware Outdoor Trail, and Ajit Mathew George, president of the MidAtlantic Food + Wine Festival.

Due to inclement weather, some planned activities had to be altered or substituted, yet writers expressed pleasant surprise at the volume and variety of outdoor options available to visitors in southern Delaware.

The goal of these biannual writers’ familiarization tours is to introduce travel writers to the tourism experiences and resources available in southern Delaware.

The writers, in turn, introduce their readers to southern Delaware by sharing their experiences through published articles, blog posts and via social media.

The acting executive director of the Delaware Harness Racing Commission has been named to the post permanently.

Mark Davis, the Delaware Department of Agriculture’s deputy principal assistant and policy advisor, had been acting direc-

tor since September 2013 after previously serving as a liaison to the harness racing industry.

Davis’ appointment was supported by the six-member Delaware Harness Racing Commission after a nationwide search.

Davis began his career at DDA as a

land-use planner, from 1995 to 2005, and previously worked at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control as an environmental scientist, from 1991 to 1995. Davis davis has served as DDA’s deputy principal assistant to the secretary since 2005.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Livingston University.

Airport runway reopens

CULINARY SCHOOL GRADUATES - Six members of The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware celebrated their achievements during a graduation ceremony for the second class at the Food Bank’s new Milford facility recently. The students spent 14 weeks developing their skills and passion for the culinary arts. From proper knife handling techniques to Serve Safe certification and completing a twoweek internship, the students prepared for entry-level jobs in the food industry. Students are referred to the program through the Criminal Justice Council, Delaware Department of Labor, Delaware Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and other community-based organizations. The graduates are: Paula Walston of Seaford, Uriah Parker of Milford, Phillip Kizer of Dover, Michael Cook of Seaford, Kelley McCallum of Milford and Ellen Roland of Milford.

The Sussex County Airport’s main runway is taxied and ready for takeoff after a six-week maintenance project kept it closed to all aircraft.

Crews have been putting the finishing touches on a $4.7 million project to repave and repaint the main runway at the facility east of Georgetown. The 5,500-foot-long main runway, which re-opened late Thursday night, May 15, had been closed since April 9 to allow construction crews to mill the main surface and lay down 15,000 tons of new asphalt that is 2 inches thick. An adjoining shorter runway remained open during construction for smaller planes.

The paving project is part of an overall $8.8 million effort to make improvements at the airport, including enhanced lighting, obstruction removal, and a main runway extension. That extension – which brought the main runway’s total length up from 5,000 to 5,500 feet – was completed in fall 2013. The federal government has funded at least 90 percent of all costs.

The repaving project is the first time the runway surfaced has been upgraded since 1994, and has a life expectancy of 20 years.

Delawareans’ digital legacies would be treated the same as the physical assets, documents and records left for their heirs and executors to handle after their deaths according to legislation introduced recently by Rep. Darryl Scott and sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Bryan Townsend.

House Bill 345, titled the Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets and Digital Accounts Act, addresses a growing problem facing families and the legal professionals who help them.

According to the bill, digital assets such as email, cloud storage, social media, health records, content licenses, databases and more would be deemed a part of a person’s estate upon death, and the entities who control access to those assets would be required to provide the legal executor with control over the deceased’s digital assets.

House Bill 345 has been assigned to the House Telecommunication, Internet and Technology Committee.

DEC purchases power from landfill

Delaware Electric Cooperative is now purchasing power produced at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s Landfill in Sandtown, enough to power 1,200 member homes. The energy is being produced by two new methane-driven engines constructed at the landfill, which convert the methane gas produced by decomposing garbage into electricity. The landfill gas plant was built

by Ameresco, a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company.

The power produced at the site is sent directly to member homes which means the Co-op doesn’t have to pay transmission fees to distribute the power to its members.

The project is also expected to reduce emissions at the Sandtown Landfill. Gasto-energy projects can lower emissions at landfills by 60 to 90 percent. If the methane gas wasn’t being used to produce energy, it would be burned off.

Currently, Delaware Electric Co-op purchases or produces ten percent of its power from renewable sources. Under state law, all utilities in Delaware must purchase or produce 25 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2025.

What better way to enjoy the water than on a cruise? Bob Cardaneo of Cruise One, based in Long Neck, says his favorite place is on the water. “I don’t care where it is, as long as it’s on a ship.” It was after his first cruise — to the Bahamas — that he decided to open a travel agency. One reason: “Ninetyeight percent of cruise passengers come back happy.”

He and his wife, Catherine, purchased their Cruise One franchise 20 years ago.

They work with all the major cruise lines throughout the world, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity. They arrange riverboat cruises also ... “anything that deals

with water, except the Lewes Ferry,” Cardaneo said. Cruises are arranged for individuals, business meetings, groups and charitable organizations (think fundraiser!)

Recently certified at the “Disney College of Knowledge” as Disney travel agents, the Cardaneos also arrange land travel.

It costs no more to book travel through an agent. “In fact, my price may be better,” Cardaneo said. He explained the cruise lines pay his commission, not the customer. “They put us through all kinds of training, just as Disney did.

They don’t want to sell direct.”

Most travelers are better off with an agent rather than booking on the Internet, he said. Airline tickets are the one exception.

“Booking your own cruise, you have no idea where your room is. It could be below the swimming pool, kitchen or the showroom lounge. I know where all those places are,” Cardaneo said. “I will never put my customer in a bad spot.”

Cardaneo suggests booking several months in advance to have a choice of assigned rooms. The price includes basically all your meals (available 24 hours a day), all entertainment, port charges and taxes. Variables such as alcohol and casino costs, souvenirs and excursions in ports of call are extra.

This is all driven by the steady economic growth in the region—more people of all ages moving to our coastal area. We are also seeing more seasonal visitors. Of course, there are many attractions – quality of life, seaside relaxation and recreation, low real estate taxes, affordable living costs, and no sales tax. The east-west arterials on Route 9, Route 24 and Route 26 are also growing as the population further west continues to expand. Those residents relocating to communities in western Sussex County also visit the coast to enjoy entertainment, the beach, boardwalk and restaurants. All of this growth, of course, has led to not only more north-south traffic on Route 1 posing

challenges, hazards and stress, especially from May until October, but increased traffic on Route 9, 24 and 26. DelDOT public transportation in all directions needs to be improved year round.

One of the fastest growing segments of our market is office space both medical and professional. With the increase in aging population, we are seeing renewed interest in medical space in both the eastern and western portion of our county.

Specialty medical practices as well as general practices are increasing as well.

This has resulted in a slight increase in office rental rates and this trend will likely continue. Our growth has been spectacular but it needs to be thought out and managed so that our future continues to be bright!

Be an advocate for your customers Most businesses, including mine, survive because of the faithful patronage of other small businesses. I’m grateful for the opportunity to print, pack, ship and notarize for business owners in my area.

I encourage you to take an inventory of all of your small business customers and actively start to promote them in your business and in your community. Make it a priority to follow your customers on social media, websites, blogs and local business publications like this one.

First things first, you can’t promote your customers if you

don’t know what they do. Once you retain a new business customer, make it your business to know their business. It’s in your best interest to know the needs of your customers, not only because it will increase your sales opportunities with that customer, but because you will be able to promote their products and services to others. This kind of advocacy for your customers will earn more loyalty than any discount you could offer. You can’t put a price on helping a friend seize a profitable opportunity or avoid a catastrophic mistake.

This isn’t rocket science. In fact, promoting your customers is as easy as keeping business cards handy to give out or “talking up” their goods and services when you see a potential sales opportunity for them.

Make sure you are a member of a local chamber of commerce or another club or organization where business leaders are actively in attendance and put yourself in position to make social contacts not only for yourself, but for your partners in business.

Members of the Sussex County Association of Realtors, along with representatives from Delaware’s other two counties, visited Capitol Hill on Wednesday, May 14, to advocate and promote policies that are beneficial to the nation’s real estate markets.

While realtors from across the country convened in Washington, D.C. recently to attend the Realtor Party Convention & Trade Expo, members from the Sussex County Association of Realtors (SCAOR) met with U.S. Senators and congressional staff on Capitol Hill to advocate policies that protect and advance real estate and that are critical to buyers, sellers and investors in southern Delaware.

The meetings between SCAOR members and Delaware Senators Thomas Carper and Chris Coons, as well as senior staff from Rep. John Carney’s office, focused on issues impacting the real estate market in Delaware, including the recently passed flood insurance bill, preserving the mission and accessibility of Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Affairs home loan programs, protecting real estate-related tax policies and reforming the secondary mortgage market.

Realtors also urged the state’s congressional delegation to reinstate an expired tax provision that provides relief to individuals following a loan modification, short sale or foreclosure.

Relief Act expired at the end of 2013, and assured individuals would not have to pay income tax on forgiven mortgage debt,” said Brad Riedle, 2014 SCAOR president.

“Distressed homeowners who’ve suffered through the loss of their home should not be further burdened with additional income taxes. It’s not only unfair, but it also harms families, neighborhoods and communities. We urge Congress to act quickly on this issue.”

Building on the momentum established at the national event, the Delaware

Association of Realtors (DAR) is hosting a “Legislative Action Day” on Tuesday, June 17, at Legislative Hall in Dover.

This gathering will afford local real estate professionals an opportunity to meet with their state lawmakers and talk to them about issues that affect the industry in the First State.

While adults will find the historical poultry displays, car show, farmers’ market, arts and crafters, commercial vendors and non-profit exhibits of interest, there will be other activities scheduled specifically with the children in mind.

Children’s entertainment will be offered on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Friday, Snippy Doodles will be sharing her clowning artistry and balloon magic and on Saturday there will be juggling demonstrations with master juggler Carlos Mir of Salisbury.

Other attractions include exotic animals, a petting barn and pony rides. Touch-a-Truck will provide kids a close look at a variety of BIG trucks, and Scales and Tales, an environmental education program of the Maryland Park Service, will afford up close encounters with wildlife native to Maryland. And the kids won’t want to miss model train displays, a popular marine display and a “Kids’ Play Zone” set up on the festival grounds.

Within the Main Exhibit Hall, baby chicks will be hatching on site and plenty of fluffy baby chicks for petting will provide great photo opportunities for parents and grandparents.

And no matter what the age, there will be lots of great food, including chicken from the festival’s well-known Giant Fry Pan, hand dipped ice cream, baked goods and much more.

Admission to the Delmarva Chicken Festival is free and many of the event’s attractions will be offered at no charge.

Bill would authorize hemp research A bill being circulated in the State House of Representatives would allow Delaware to explore the potential of industrial hemp.

Sponsored by State Rep. Dave Wilson, R-Cedar Creek Hundred, the legislation would allow colleges, universities and the Delaware Department of Agriculture to create and operate pilot programs to study the growth, cultivation, or marketing of industrial hemp.

Because hemp belongs to the same genus (cannabis) of plants as marijuana, its cultivation has been effectively prohibited in the U.S. since the late 1930s.

Hemp contains negligible amounts of THC – the psychoactive chemical responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating properties and is incapable of producing any mood-altering effect. For nearly 80 years, the federal government’s unwillingness to draw the legal distinction between the two plants has closed the door to hemp cultivation.

The enactment of the 2014 Federal Farm Bill in February opened that door a crack. The omnibus, five-year measure includes a provision (SEC. 7606) allowing states that have legalized industrial hemp to engage in pilot research programs. Twelve states allow hemp production.

The Hemp Industries Association, a non-profit trade group consisting of hundreds of hemp businesses, estimates the total retail value of hemp products sold in the U.S. in 2013 to be at least $581 million. These products include everything from non-dairy milk, body-care products and nutritional supplements to clothing, paper, auto parts, carpeting and building materials.
