The vitality of the City of Dover is increasing due to growth in a wide array of areas. Whether hotels, new stores, new homes, or new services, it’s happening in Dover. Since January 2007, three hotels have been constructed, three more are currently under construction, and another three are in the planning review phase. Significant renovations and improvements have also been made at other hotels. Not included is the 250-room addition to the Dover Downs Hotel. With the demands of the tourism industry and its reflection in Dover, expansion was necessary. Dover Downs Hotel, Casino and NASCAR expanded their race operations and video lottery additions and are also in the process of constructing three new restaurants and a full service Toppers Spa. They will continue to cultivate change in the Dover area. Construction of the Rte. 13 corridor is strong. The proposed 216,650 square foot Dover Crossing shopping center has been approved at Leipsic Road with stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, Dicks Sporting Goods, and Ross Clothing. Circuit City has joined the retail mix along the highway and a Sonic Drive-In Restaurant is currently under development. The Dover Mall was sold to new owners. Rising economic tide in Sussex County will be a benefit to all By David B. Baker Sussex County Administrator Former President John F. Kennedy once remarked that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” For anyone who has ever been fishing, or strolled along any waterfront village, such an observation is apparent and seemingly not all that insightful. But President Kennedy wasn’t using this imagery to state the obvious.

Instead, he was using the remark to make a point that what benefits one can benefit us all. The “rising tide” quote might have been overly simplistic, but it was no less accurate or less meaningful in its intent to explain how economic policies can have a ripple effect with farreaching and lasting results. This past year, Sussex County has taken a number of steps that I believe will have ripple effects on the economic tide here in Sussex County for
