Two Rite Aids serving side by side in Seaford By Lynn R. Parks With its recent acquisition of the Eckerd drug store chain, Rite Aid Pharmacy acquired the Eckerd pharmacy at the corner of Stein Highway and Atlanta Road in Seaford. That Eckerd store now wears a banner that reads, “Rite Aid — coming soon.” Right across the street, on the opposite corner of Stein Highway and Atlanta Road, is the Rite Aid, still operating. “As of now, there are no plans to close either store,” said Rite Aid
spokeswoman Jodi Cook. “Both stores are continuing to operate as is.” Cook said that over the next several years, Rite Aid will evaluate all of its 5,160 stores, 1,516 of which were Eckerd stores, to determine if any should be closed. Rite Aid also acquired 338 Brooks drug stores in New England and New York. “We plan to close less than 200 stores nationwide,” Cook said. Even if a store is closed, Cook said, its employees will be offered jobs in other Rite Aid stores. “The success of this merger really is
dependent on the great associates we have in all the stores,” she said. “We are keeping all of our associates.” Cook said that if a decision is made to close one of the Seaford stores, both stores will be evaluated to determine which one should be closed. “We will keep open the store that is the most convenient for our customers,” she said. With its acquisition of Eckerd, completed June 4, Rite Aid, based in Camp Hill, Pa., became the largest pharmacy chain on the East Coast, and the third-largest in the United States.
