HALL OF FAME HONOREES SELECTED Continued from page 1

n so many ways, MORGAN helped shape who I am, by providing me with an excellent education and a social and cultural foundation. Part of my worldview was shaped in MORGAN’s classrooms. Many of my enduring friendships began on MORGAN’s campus. Because MORGAN has been such an important part of my life, I gladly support the university, both as a volunteer and financial contributor. Was your experience similar? Is MORGAN an essential part of your life story? Did you discover an interest or an aptitude here that led you to a career or a lifelong hobby? Did coming here and meeting other students from across the country and around the world expand your view of life and its possibilities? As alumni, we have the opportunity to ensure that all of the good we derived from our MORGAN experiences is available for generations to come. Contribute to MORGAN’s New Horizons capital campaign and help create more scholarships for future students. Share your stories with us. Let us know where you are and what you are doing. Fellow alumni want to know, and MORGAN needs to know. All of our achievements are part of the MORGAN story and help to attract support and nurture growth. Do you know MORGAN graduates who are not in the Alumni Association and who do not receive information from MORGAN? Share their names with us, and let us invite them into our community. By doing so, you help build and strengthen the MORGAN family. MORGAN has given so much to us. Let’s remember to give something back.

I

Sincerely,

Stephen O. Russell, Esq. President National Alumni Association

LIBRARY BACK ON TRACK FOR 2003 The new library project is back on track after several months of debate over whether or not the proposed site for construction had water problems. Two separate and independent engineering consultants found that water seepage in the old fine arts facility, once located on the proposed library site, was a result of poor building design and construction rather than a high water table. Also, legislation passed during the 2002 General Assembly session allows the university to be reimbursed for any funding it advances to complete planning for the new library. That same legislation provided for an appropriation of $54 million next year for reimbursement and actual construction of the new library, which is scheduled to begin in November of 2003.

ALUMNI DAY 2002 n May 18, 2002, approximately 400 alumni converged on Morgan’s campus to celebrate their reunions. Dr. Earl S. Richardson presented his “State of the University” address at the Annual Business Meeting. The Class of 1952 also held a meeting before the business meeting. At noon, before the luncheon, a reception was held in the fourth floor lobby of the McKeldin Center. Music for the reception was provided by the MSU Jazz Ensemble. After the reception, the Annual Alumni Awards and Recognition Luncheon was held in the Alice W. Parham Ballroom. Mark Gray, ‘90, served as the master of ceremonies. Awards were given to our Alumnus of the Year, James H. Gilliam Jr.; our Honorary Alumnus of the Year, Dr. Linda G. J. Gilliam; the Special Achievement Award went to the Honorable Ronald B. Merriweather; and the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter received the Chapter of the Year Award. The MSU Choir mesmerized the crowd in their usual special way. As a special touch, Dr. Carter solicited one of the alumni, former choir member Mary James Jennings, to lead the choir in singing “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” while other former alumni members joined in. What a treat! This year, those classes ending in “2” and “7” celebrated their reunions by making major contributions to the University. A number of classes made financial contributions; they included the Classes of 1952, 1957 and 1962. The day was a total success, with alumni reminiscing with classmates whom they haven’t seen in years, or, in some cases, decades.

MORGAN HOSPITALITY CENTER MOVING FOWARD

ALUMNINEWS The Alumni News is published biannually by the Office of Alumni Relations, in conjunction with the National Alumni Association. Questions, comments, or letters may be directed to: Office of Alumni Relations, Morgan State University, 1700 East Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251.

President Earl S. Richardson was featured in an article, written by Morgan alumna April Ryan ’89, entitled “Hotel Morgan” for the September 2002 issue of Baltimore Magazine. The article discussed Morgan’s Hospitality Management Program and Dr. Richardson’s vision for a new home for the school – a new $50 million facility that will include a 100-room hotel and conference center. It will serve as a training ground for students who want to enter the increasingly attractive hospitality industry. In the article, several respected leaders in both the public and private sectors expressed support for the center, given the current and anticipated growth in the hospitality industry in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, as well as the needs of the community and state agencies for conference accommodations in Baltimore. At this time, the State is moving forward with acquiring the Northwood property on which the facility would be built through its powers of eminent domain. The process of condemnation is underway in an attempt to reconcile differences between the asking price and the appraised value of the property.
