IV. Acceptable Intellectual Contributions (ICs): PeerReviewed Journals (PRJs), Group 1 and Group 2 Journals, and Other Intellectual Contributions (ICs)
I. Introduction
The purpose of this document is to describe the criteria for faculty designations as specified by our mission and the 2020 AACSB Business Accreditation Standard3:FacultyandProfessional StaffResources
According to AACSB Standard 3.2, ‘Faculty members can be Scholarly Academic (SA), Practice Academic (PA), Scholarly Practitioner (SP), or Instructional Practitioner (IP). Faculty members should be assigned one of these designations based on the school’s criteria for initial 1) qualifications and 2) sustained engagement activities that support currency and relevancy in the teaching field. Faculty whose qualifications do not meet the criteria established by the school for SA, PA, SP, or IP status will be classified as Additional (“A”) Faculty.
Specific content about these designations is captured herein, whereby:
SectionsIItoIII describe GSBM’s criteria forSA, PA, SP, or IP status.
SectionIV describes acceptable intellectual contributions (IC).
SectionV describes acceptable professional engagement activities for all faculty.
SectionVI covers the “A” faculty designation.
SectionVII describes Participating (“P”)andSupporting (“S”) faculty designations.
SectionVIII stipulates professional engagement activities for the Accounting faculty.
SectionIX outlines the recordkeeping requirements for all faculty.
Special observations about our intellectual contribution (IC)
activity warrant attention. In general, the GSBM views ICs as activities that drive and direct the teaching, application, use, and advancement of business and management thought leadership. The GSBM ICs include publication activity as well as other academic-based outputs. Our IC publication criteria evaluation is based on and guided by the 2020 AACSB Business Standards. It states that articles in ‘peer-reviewed journals (PRJ) are scholarly publications submitted for critique and evaluation by one or more academics with expertise in the discipline and/or methodology of the subject matter. Publications in Law Reviews may be included in this category.’ Group 1 and Group 2 journals are PRJs described in Section IV.
Finally, with a focus on acknowledging the innovative avenues available to faculty to create, drive, and sustain thought leadership, the GSBM understands and appreciates the valueadding role sponsoredprojects play in creating and maintaining business acumen. Assuch, our IC framework recognizes the value tied to acquiring grant-funded research. It should be noted that a sponsored project (grant, contract, cooperative agreement) award of $50,000 or more qualifies as one non-journal PRJ. PRJs and other ICs are further described inSection IV.
II. QualificationsforScholarlyAcademic (SA)andPractice Academic (PA)Designations
A. Initial Academic PreparationsforSAandPA: Two criteria would typify faculty as having the initial academic preparations as an SAor PA: 1) a doctoral degree ina direct business field the individual is academically prepared to and currently teaches; or 2) a doctoral degree in a “NonBusiness-Related Discipline” (e.g., Law,Psychology),but
whose primary teaching responsibility is in abusiness field. In the latter case, these faculty members must maintain active involvement in their primaryteaching responsibility area through business-related writing (i.e., business publication activity) and participation in businessprofessional meetings or related activities. Note that faculty members with a specialized graduate degree in Law or Taxation can only teach business law or taxation courses and are allowed to publish in Lawand Taxation outlets. The evaluation of what constitutes an acceptable “Law”or “NonBusiness-Related Discipline” will occur during the initial hiring process.
A special note about initial SA academic preparation warrants attention. Specifically, the GSBM considersa faculty member to be initially academically qualified if the faculty member received a doctoral degree within the last six years.

In the absence of such output, a combination of three ICs published in a PRJ is required, along with one other IC identified in Section IV for the six-year period. Either of the following three alternatives reflects how this can be met:
● NoSponsored Project: At a minimum, the four ICs must be a combination of the following: a) at least two of the four ICs must be PRJs
published in a Group 1 journal, and
b) at least one of the other ICs must be a PRJ published in a Group 1 or Group 2 journal, and
c) at least one of the remaining ICs can be an IC identified in Section IV.

An SA Administrator-Faculty or SA Program Director-Faculty teaching in the Master’s programs must meet the same requirements as indicated in Section C for SA Undergraduate and Master’s Instruction.
F. SustainedEngagementActivities forPAInstruction:
This requires three Acceptable Professional Engagement Activities within the last six years, with at least one from Group 1 Acceptable Professional Engagement Activities within the last six years. Others can come from Group 2 Acceptable Professional Engagement Activities. Group 1 and Group 2 Acceptable Professional Engagement Activities are described in Section V.
III. Qualifications forScholarlyPractitioner(SP)and InstructionalPractitioner (IP)Designation
A. InitialAcademicandProfessional Preparations forSP andIP: The criteria are as follows: (1) A master’s degree inthe field related to the area of the teaching assignment; and (2) Significant
professional experience that is relevant to the individual’s teaching assignment at the timeof hiring. Relative to (2), this typically means an extended period of work experience. The quality and length of the professional experience must be higher if the faculty member is assigned to teach upper-level courses.
For instance, four to six years of investment advisory experience at a regionalor local firm is sufficient for a faculty member to teach introductory finance courses. However, to teach upper- or graduate-level finance courses, the practitioner faculty is expected to have held a managerial position or higher and at least a master’s degree.
B. SustainedEngagementActivities forSP

IV. AcceptableIntellectualContributions (IC)–PeerReviewed Journals (PRJ)s, Group1andGroup2 Journals,andOtherIntellectualContributions (IC)s: Acceptable ICs include articles in a PRJ
(where Group 1 and Group 2 journals are a subset of PRJs) and other IC items as outlined below.Group 1 journals are 1) PRJs with a rating of A*, A, or B in the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC)Journal Quality List, 2) business-related PRJs with an acceptance rate of 25 percent or below in Cabells Scholarly Analytics, or 3) PRJs with a high/very high impact rating in an interdisciplinary journal ranking system (e.g., a rating of “2” or higher in CharteredAbs, or a SJR rating of .9 or higherin SCOPUS). If discrepancies arise among the criteria, a journal must meet at least two of the three specified standards to qualify as Group 1. Group 2 journals are PRJs not identified in Group 1.
Special Note.
If the initial academicpreparation for a faculty member has a Non-Business Related-Degree, then a faculty member must publish in a PRJ listed in ABDC Journal Quality List or Cabells according to the criteria outlined above to be a Scholarly Academic for PhD Instruction, Undergraduate and Masters Instruction, or Undergraduate-Only Teaching Instruction.

VI. FailuretoMaintainQualificationStatus:Additional (A)Faculty
Following AACSB directives, faculty who do not meet the criteria for maintaining SA, PA, SP, orIP status will be classified as ‘Additional (“A”) Faculty.’ “A” faculty is expected to develop implementation plans that will allow them to regain qualified status. These plans willbe developed in consultation with the Department Chair, who, along with the Dean, will review progress semi-annually.
VII. Participating(“P”)andSupporting(“S”)Faculty
In the GSBM, a Participating (“P”) Faculty must have a master’s degree indisciplines related to their teaching fields, engage in classroom teaching, and be involved in university, school, and/or department activities such as
participating in curricular review and development;
attending meetings;
advising students and/or student clubs;
assessment and/or assurance of learning;
serving on committees; or
engaging in an Acceptable Professional Engagement activity identified in Section V.
The GSBM also employs a limited number of Supporting (“S”) Faculty on a semester-by-semester basis. Usually, supporting faculty members also have Master’s degrees in disciplines related to their teaching fields. At the initial hire and ongoing, the Department Chairs will determine the qualifications based on the supporting faculty’s educational background, professional experience, and professional development activities. Any faculty member who does not meet the criteria for “P” faculty is “S” faculty.
VIII. AccountingFacultyProfessionalInteractionActivities
All faculty members are encouraged to engage in professional interaction activities. Each accounting faculty member in the SA (SP/PA/IP) category is expected to complete a minimum of five (ten) hours of documented professional interaction activities annually (see Section IX for documentation guidelines). Activities that qualify as professional interactions include, but are not limited to
earning Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours;

IX. RecordkeepingandDocumentation
The burden of justification regarding faculty designation rests with the individual faculty. It is the responsibility of the individual faculty member to document academic engagement and professional engagement activities, university, school, or departmental service activities, and professional interaction activities on a timely basis. When faculty members submit their annual report every year,all
relevant activities should be entered into the SEDONA database, GSBM’s current accreditation recording system. Only those activities verified as having been included in the current accreditation recording system will be considered by the Chair and the Dean in their annual qualification and teaching assignment decisions.
