Moose Jaw Community Players is inviting residents to step into the city’s past and onto the stage as auditions continue for the return of Notoriously Moose Jaw. The locally written production, which sold out during its original run in 2023, is being revived with new material and a fresh cast, with upcoming auditions scheduled for Jan. 7 and Jan. 10. A first intake was held Jan. 4. This is the second round of producing for this show because of popular demand. The show was written by Joan Stumborg and Debbie Burgher and is structured as a series of short scenes highlighting key historical moments that define Moose Jaw. “Notoriously Moose Jaw (features) 14 different vignettes of significant events that happened to kind of culminate into what Moose Jaw is (today),” Sheward said. “Some of them are fun and silly, and some of them are more serious.” Those scenes range from the flooding in Wakamow Valley to tales of Al Capone, and River Street escapades to the TCA Flight 9-7 collision with a Harvard 3309 in 1954.
Even returning audience members can expect something new this time around. A newly written scene has been added to include the New Year’s Day fire that happened in 2004. “Our group has grown significantly since we did it the first time, so we’re super excited to see what our new members … will bring to the stage,” she said. Auditions are open to everyone, with Sheward emphasizing that Notoriously Moose Jaw is accepting performers aged 15 and up with any level of
experience. “This show in particular has a lot of opportunity for some background roles on stage, like being part of a crowd here or being part of this huge scene there,” she said. Those auditioning are asked to bring a short song excerpt, and the production is also seeking dancers with ballet experience for the newly added scene. Behind-the-scenes help is equally welcome, and auditions should take around 15 minutes or less. Auditions will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Moose Jaw Centre for Arts and Culture on a drop-in basis. Following casting, the production will be performed at a provincial community theatre festival in Regina during Easter break, before opening at the Mae Wilson Theatre on April 23, 24, and 25.
