Three Moose Jaw lawyers receive provincial honours The provincial government has recognized 12 lawyers — including three in Moose Jaw — for their contributions to the legal profession and public service by giving them the King’s Counsel (K.C.) designation.

“We have a long history of celebrating the most dedicated and talented legal professionals in Saskatchewan and across Canada through the King’s Counsel designations,” said Deputy Premier Jim Reiter. “I am proud to announce this year’s designates, who represent a wide range of expertise and knowledge from across Saskatchewan’s legal community.”

The 2024 King’s Counsel appointments include: • Jeffrey Brick is Crown Counsel with the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General and was called to the Bar in 1992 • Ryan Hrechka is with Grayson and Company in Moose Jaw and was called to the Bar in 2004 • Kendra Jacobs is with Gerrand Rath Johnson LLP and was called to the Bar in 2002 • Gordon Kirkby is with Kirkby Fourie Law Firm and was called to the Bar in 1985 • J. Individuals must live in Saskatchewan and must have been entitled to practice law for at least ten years in the superior courts of any province or territory of Canada, the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Individuals holding the offices of justice minister, deputy justice minister, dean of the University of Saskatchewan law school, president of the law society and president of the Canadian Bar Association — Saskatchewan branch are given special consideration for recommendation for King’s Counsel appointment, provided that they are otherwise qualified to receive the designation under The King’s Counsel Act.

Prairie Hockey Academy go undefeated on way to win in Lorne Molleken U17 Prep Prairie Classic

Prairie Hockey Academy Cougars put together an undefeated run all the way to the championship game where they’d score late to tie the game against Edmonton-based South Side Athletic Club before winning it all with 0.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

Wakamow’s ‘Valley of Lights’ show another glowing success

The Wakamow Valley Authority’s fourth annual Valley of Lights show in the Lorne Calvert Campground concluded and organizers viewed it as another success. The drive-through light show is one of the largest fundraising events for the Wakamow Valley Authority. The Valley of Lights show expanded with more than 100,000 LED lights illuminating the entire perimeter of the campground in a first. The drive-through route was also simplified from the previous figure-eight loop, a move that made it easier to navigate the viewing area. It incorporated a few festive additions including “Candy Cane Lane,” an illuminated row of candy canes that flanked both sides of the final stretch of road leading to the exit. One highlight was the returning visit of the evermischievous evil elf, The Grinch, followed closely by festive appearances by the Moose Jaw Community Choir and Santa Claus himself. The always-popular wagon rides provided by Prairie Percherons also returned as a standout attraction,

Youth celebrate their ‘superpowers’ as they ushered in the new year at Voltage ‘24 Several young residents ushered in 2025 during Voltage, the signature annual event hosted by Joe’s Place Youth Centre that offers a fun, chemical-free celebration for youths aged 13 to 19. Carl Paulhus honoured as January’s Special Olympian of the Month The Moose Jaw Warriors Hockey Club honoured January’s Special Olympian of the Month, Carl Paulhus, during a Jan. 3 match against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Paulhus said he was likely chosen because of his overall involvement with Special Olympics. He has been with the Special Olympics program for as long as he can remember and has played in a wide range of sports including bocce, bowling, floor hockey, and golf. Salvation Army thanked residents for going ‘above and beyond’ with support thru the Christmas season

The Salvation Army thanked the community for the support it offered during the 2024 Christmas season, as the donations supported in-need residents then and will help people throughout the year.

Unfortunately, overall donations were down 15 per cent compared to 2023 — likely because of the Canada Post strike — but several fundraising initiatives exceeded their targets, Major Byron Kean said. The Kettle Campaign raised more than $72,000, which was $2,000 more than the goal the previous year. The Stocking Campaign that the Moose Jaw Express ran for the Salvation Army charity raised $14,755 just short of the goal that was extended earlier in December after reaching the initial goal of $10,000.

The Stocking Campaign doubled the goal this year and collected 47-per-cent more

than expected was exciting. Meanwhile, the community adopted 32 families, up from 16 in 2023. This program sees an individual, business, or charity sponsor a family and attempt to match what the Salvation Army gives, including a gift card for groceries and a present for each adopted child. The charity distributed almost 340 food-related gift cards through the hamper program, which meant it helped nearly 1,000 people, including over 300 children who received toys on Christmas Day. The Salvation Army collected over 900 toys and almost 1,800 teddy bears. The charity also provided roughly 600 gift bags to seniors at care homes and assisted-living centres, with these items reminding the older residents that they were appreciated and remembered. ‘An Evening Around the World’ raises over $3K for newcomer programming \The Moose Jaw Multicultural Council (MJMC) hosted its eighth annual international dinner event titled “An Evening Around the World” back in November. Results for the fundraiser were announced in January. he event took place at St. Andrew’s United Church and raised $3,567.18 to support the organization’s array of program options for Moose Jaw’s diverse residents.

15 Wing Moose Jaw earns silver in CAF Canada West Basketball regionals The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Canada West Basketball Championship took place for the second consecutive year at the 15 Wing Community Fitness Centre from Jan. 19 to 24, bringing with it five military basketball teams from across the country. Longtime local competitor sets national record in squat on way to claiming Masters 3 championship during Canadian Powerlifting Union Nationals During the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championships, Moose Jaw’s Mava Brydges a 67-year-old multipletime champion took top spot in the women’s 84 kilogram division while also setting a national record in the squat for her age and weight category. Brydges cleared 131 kg in the squat to break her own national record by half a kilogram in addition to hitting 90 kg in the bench press and 137.5 kg in the deadlift for a 318.5 total.

Together with other delegates in different weight divisions, they competed against delegates from other provinces, Jariz and Jack Geraldoy Jariz got the Bronze Medal in her weight division, not bad for a first-timer. She also received the 2024 Elite Junior Female Taekwondo Athlete award from Saskatchewan Taekwondo, given February, 2025 in Regina.

Jack Geraldoy, a member of Taekwondo Canada National Referee, was selected to be one of the official referees at the said event. He also got an award as the Best male Kyorugi Referee by Taekwondo Canada.

Defending champs take 8-4 win over Garrett Springer in gold medal game Sunday in Melville Regina’s Jason Ackerman foursome became provincial mixed curling champions. Ackerman and his Regina Highland foursome of third Robyn Silvernagle, second Samuel Wills and lead Colleen Ackerman took an 8-4 win over Regina’s Garrett Springer in the championship final. It was the fifth title for the two Ackermans, who also won in 2010, 2012, 2019 and 2024. Silvernagle and Wills both won their second mixed championship after also winning alongside Jason and Colleen last season.

Ackerman began his winning ways as part of a pair of provincial junior men’s champions out of the Hillcrest Sports Centre in the late 90’s, playing third for Joel Jordison’s Saskatchewan champs in 1996 and winning again with Steven Scott in 1999.

For Don and Kathy Howe, celebrating 30 years as Tim Hortons franchise owners in Moose Jaw is more than just a business milestone — it’s a testament to the strength of their community and the relationships they’ve built along the way. The Howes opened their first Tim Hortons franchise in Moose Jaw in 1995. Since then, their commitment to providing a welcoming space for customers has helped them grow, with three locations in Moose Jaw and further expansions in Weyburn and Maple Creek. Over the years, the Howes have achieved significant milestones, such as being one of the first Tim Hortons locations in Canada to implement a no-smoking policy. They also navigated challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping their restaurants open and employees working. Fire department honours the career of two longtime firefighters The Moose Jaw Fire Department (MJFD) and members of the Moose Jaw Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 553 union gathered this month to celebrate the careers of two longtime firefighters, Bill Howes and Jimmy Smith, as they officially marked their retirement.

Howes and Smith, both respected members of the department, dedicated several decades of service to protecting the community. Friends, family, and colleagues came together at a special ceremony to formally recognize their commitment, leadership, and the impact they’ve had on both the department and the city.

As part of the celebration, both men were presented with ceremonial axes — a long-standing tradition in the firefighting community. These decorative axes serve as a symbol of honour and appreciation, and the tool itself has deep historical significance representing both the physical and symbolic

to public safety. The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal, established in 1985 by the Canadian Monarch-in-Council — the Government of Canada under the authority of the reigning monarch — is awarded to members of recognized Canadian fire services who have completed at least 20 years of service.

The medal is presented on behalf of His Majesty the King in the right of Canada through the office of the Secretary to the Governor General, and is awarded by the Chancellery of Canadian Orders.

Bye has spent years volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross, organizing blood donor clinics, and contributing to various community initiatives. Gilliland has shaped early childhood education for nearly 40 years through her role at the Southwest Day Care and Early Learning Centre, while Jackman has devoted more than three decades to training dancers and instructors through Dance Images.

APRIL On track for gold: Zayden Anderson’s sprint to record-breaking heights At just 17 years old, Zayden Anderson secured his place as one of Moose Jaw’s most accomplished young athletes. A Grade 12 student at Vanier Collegiate in April 2025, Zayden’s dominance in track and field has led him to break records, earn provincial — and national — recognition, and set his sights on one day competing in the Olympics. That success has only continued. In 2024, Zayden represented Team Southwest at the Saskatchewan Summer Games, where he brought home gold in the 100-metre hurdles and secured bronze in both the 200-metre and 100-metre dashes. He also made Team Sask., representing the province at the (Royal Canadian) Legion Nationals Youth Track and Field meet. At the 2024 high school provincials, Zayden showcased his speed and versatility, winning gold in the 100-metre hurdles, silver in the 100-metre dash, and bronze in the 200-metre dash.

Two residents receive prestigious medal for volunteer efforts Saskatchewan Lt.-Gov. Bernadette McIntyre has recognized two Moose Jaw residents for their community efforts by announcing that they will receive the 2024 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. Moose Jaw WDM says farewell to retiring ops manager, Kathy Fitton The Western Development Museum’s Kathy Fitton decided to retire after 29 years as the operations manager in Moose Jaw. Fitton began working at the Moose Jaw WDM on March 19, 1996, and over those three decades, she did what she could to keep the place running, from human resources activities to organizing special events; the Thunder Creek Model Train Show began 25 years ago, while Brickspo has been around for 14 years.

She noted that besides paperwork on her desk, there were also other items like train parts or car pieces that she had picked up while working with volunteers to move vehicles or set up exhibits.

Quilter’s Haven owners stitch up their final chapter after two decades After two decades of stitching together a close-knit quilting community, Quilter’s Haven is set to close its doors later this year as its co-owners prepare for retirement.

Owners Arlyce Thompson and Heather Carruthers hope their beloved shop will continue under new ownership, allowing its legacy to live on.

The decision to close comes as Thompson and Carruthers mark their 20th year in business — a milestone they never expected when they first embarked on this journey in 2005.

From curling rinks to ball diamonds: Moose Gibson’s legacy honoured with Sports Builder Award Moose Gibson, a dedicated advocate for wheelchair curling and a fixture in the local sports scene was honoured with the prestigious Sports Builder Award at the annual Kinsmen Sports Banquet.

Presented on April 5, the award celebrated his years of dedication and lasting contributions to the community. Gibson’s influence on wheelchair curling and other sports in Moose Jaw is undeniable. In particular, his advocacy was instrumental in bringing the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships to the city in both 2023 and 2024.

At the Western Canadian Judo Champions, 11-year-old Payton Pinel would go up against girls one age division older (12 and 13 year olds) but the same weight class.

Pinel surprisingly ended up winning gold in the upgraded division. The highly competitive Edmonton tournament was not just a win for Pinel but a means for her, an 11-year-old, to receive her green belt.

APRIL Square One welcomes new leadership at AGM Square One Community Inc. held its annual general meeting at William Milne Place, highlighting a year of progress in supportive housing and community engagement on April 16.

The meeting commenced with the appointment of Della Ferguson as president for a one-year term. Ferguson was previously appointed as secretary.

Bernie Doepker was named vice-president for a two-year term, replacing AnneMarie Ursan, while Paul Wilder continues as treasurer in 2025.

The secretary position remains open.

New board members Dave Stevenson and James Zick were welcomed for two-year terms, alongside returning member Crystal Lockyer.

APRIL Heartland Hospice Moose Jaw’s hospice care wing officially opens at Pioneer Lodge After more than a decade of planning, fundraising, and community-driven effort, Heartland Hospice Moose Jaw has officially opened a new palliative care wing at Pioneer Lodge. The ribbon was cut to mark the grand opening on the early afternoon of April 11, with provincial dignitaries, the mayor, volunteers, and community members gathering to mark what organizers called “a remarkable day.”

Heartland Hospice began its journey in 2013, inspired by the late Arlene Kolosky, who recognized the need for hospice palliative care in Moose Jaw during her own endof-life experience.

In the years that followed, the organization created an onsite Serenity Garden, achieved official charity status, and now, in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the Ministry of Health, has opened a three-room hospice wing that will serve Moose Jaw and surrounding communities.

The new wing includes three hospice rooms, a family room, and a kitchen, all

The Central Butte U11 Flyers played a total of 37 games. After 12 league games, they held a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. The U11 attended tournaments in Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Swift Current and Central Butte and 2 mini tournaments in Kincaid and Central Butte.

The team ended the year by hosting the Fertile Valley League Championship Tournament. They were 1-1 after the round robin and then beat the Hanley Hawks in the final game to capture the 2024’25 Fertile Valley League Championship.

Vanier student lands sports scholarship at major Ivy League college Vanier Collegiate student Leoncia White landed a major sports scholarship with an Ivy League school in New York City.

White, 17, moved to New York City and joined Columbia University’s women’s archery team while pursuing a Bachelor of Science (biochemistry) degree. The young woman is a compound-bow athlete who has been competing at an elite level for seven years, trained in Regina, has competed locally, provincially, nationally and internationally, and has set provincial and national records.

The Grade 12 student also excels in her academic and extracurricular activities, as she has made the honour roll with an average above 90 per cent and participated in Leadership 101, Valhalla/Valour and the yearbook committee.

Healthcare Philanthropy Awards to Simpson Seeds, the Moose Jaw Police Service, and Dr. Volker Rininsland. These awards recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have significantly advanced health care in the community.

Ruck It Up raises over $5,000 for Journey to Hope Moose Jaw after this year’s ruck Ruck It Up for Mental Health is a local charity that raises money to support Journey to Hope Moose Jaw in its effort to promote mental health initiatives.

Funds are raised through an annual rucking march that takes place in Moose Jaw’s scenic Wakamow Valley.

Following its fourth annual march on June 1, Ruck It Up delivered a cheque for $5,337.52 to Journey to Hope on June 28.

Brett Hagan was one of the three founders of Ruck It Up and said this year’s ruck had 66 participants.

MAY Moose Jaw’s airport authority gets $20K from province for upgrades The provincial government provided the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport Authority (MJMAA) with $20,000 to help the organization with an upgrade project. Through its community airport partnership (CAP) program, the Ministry of Highways committed $935,910 toward eight community airports to strengthen their aviation roles, while the airport operators are contributing $939,228,

for a total of $1.87 million in total funding.

The work was expected to occur during the year’s construction season. The MJMAA plan was to fill cracks in the venue’s runways, a project that was expected to cost $40,000.

With the province providing $20,000, the airport authority was expected to provide the other half.

Vanier student wion scholarship for video promoting agriculture industry

A Vanier Collegiate student received an agriculture-related university scholarship for his efforts in promoting the industry and attempting to address students’ ignorance about this important provincial economic driver. The Ministry of Agriculture gave out a total of $15,000 through the Agriculture Student Scholarship program to four students across the province, including Noah Skoropad, who attends school in Moose Jaw and lives on a farm near Chamberlain. The Grade 12 student received $3,000 for the video he produced. All four recipients planned to attend the University of Saskatchewan’s College of

Smile Cookie Campaign raises over $34K for Child Nutrition Program After official numbers were in, the 2025 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign once again proved the power of community generosity, raising $34,276.54 in support of Hunger in Moose Jaw’s Child Nutrition Program. The annual fundraising campaign, which ran from April 28 to May 4, saw 100 per cent of proceeds from each $1 Smile Cookie sold at participating Tim Hortons locations directed to charity. This year, Hunger in Moose Jaw was the chosen recipient.

The South Hill Community Association (SHCA) saw the joint-use school take shape and supportwd the purchase of new playground equipment for the building. The four-day event once again transformed the city’s downtown into a vibrant hub of music, learning, and community spirit, as it has since the “Band City” days. Greek Night 2025 brings Mediterranean charm to the Prairies Opa! Moose Jaw’s fourth annual Greek Night was hailed as the best yet by organizers, as the community came together for an evening of food, music, dancing — and the joyous sights and sounds of smashing dinnerware.

Held on May 10 at the Temple Gardens Centre, the popular fundraiser was organized by Tourism Moose Jaw (TMJ) and the Downtown Moose Jaw Association (DMJA). The event drew hundreds of guests, nearly selling out as people gathered to celebrate Greek culture while supporting local initiatives.

Little Princess Ball brought magic, memories, enchantment to Moose Jaw

Sparkles, smiles, and plenty of fairytale magic filled the Temple Gardens Centre on May 24 and 25 as the Little Princess Ball returned for its 14th enchanting year.

Volunteering in India allowed Altaf Iqbal Mansuri to develop a commitment to community service, a quality that he put to good use after coming to Moose Jaw for school. Mansuri moved to The Friendly City in August 2023 to take Saskatchewan Polytech’s business management post-graduate certificate. He also served as vice-president and president of the Sask. Polytech Student Association, joined the 25-member Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Student Council and became a member of Moose Jaw’s youth advisory committee. Main Street burst with colour as Hometown Parade kicked off fair festivities

A splash of colour, the wailing of sirens, and a whole lot of summer spirit helped kick off the 2025 Moose Jaw Hometown Fair as the annual Hometown Parade made its way down Main Street North along its traditional route. Among the parade entries were floats and groups representing the Friendly City Optimist Club, Tourism Moose Jaw, the Moose Jaw Police Service, Dairy Queen, Dance Images, and the always-popular Moose Jaw Shrine Club — just a few of the many community organizations, businesses, and performers that took part.

June ‘End of an era’ as families said goodbye to Westmount School

It was the “end of an era” for 104-year-old Westmount School, as the building closed in June while staff and students transferred to

the new school in the fall.

Westmount began in 1914 as one classroom in a room rented from the Presbyterian Mission on 12th Avenue Southwest for $30 per month and three-quarters of the coal bill.

A four-room school building then opened on Nov. 1, 1921, with an average of 40 pupils per room.

To honour the community’s history, the school held a farewell celebration which featured food trucks, an outdoor carnival, archival displays in the gym, cake and an auction to raise funds for playground equipment at Coteau Hills Elementary School.

Trinity United Church 100th Anniversary On June 1st, Trinity United Church held a 100th anniversary service which was conducted by Reverand Doug Shepherd.

His worship the Mayor, James Murdock was in attendance and gave a brief history on the United Church of Canada.

After the service everyone gathered in the basement to enjoy a lunch catered by Charlotte’s and to enjoy some music from some of our talented members which include Gideon, Gwen, Doug, The Engles, and our choir.

There was a display table of artifacts from the last 100 years, and the afternoon ended with an anniversary cake made by one of our members, Bev Ruehs.

Central Cyclones win 4A team title as Moose Jaw athletes gathered gold at SHSAA track and field provincials

Moose Jaw athletes turned in an impressive showing on home soil during the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association track and field provincial championship. The Central Cyclones claimed the 4A overall team title for the fourth straight year, racking up six gold, two silver and two bronze to finish with 417.5 points and fourth overall among all schools.

Cyclones senior girls competitor Katie Rogers led the way for Central, picking up medals in all three long distance races.

Intermediate boys competitor Calum Seargeant took gold in the 100m in 11.47 while in the 100m hurdles, he finished with double gold.

Blake Maltais claimed top spot in the senior girls triple jump; M.J. King claimed the intermediate boys 200m title.

Cyclones senior boys competitor Keaton Belsher joined the South Central 4x100m team to win gold in that event.

Central’s Reid Weiss took second in the 100m hurdles, third in the 100m and third in the 200m.

Vanier was third in 4A with 177.5 points, while Peacock finished 13th in 5A with 168 points.

New 15 Wing commander trained at airbase nearly 30 years ago Col. Adam Carlson is no stranger to 15 Wing Airbase or the City of Moose Jaw, as he earned his pilot wings at the military training venue in 1997 and nearly 30 years later, he became the new commander in charge, a designation that was made official during a change of command ceremony at the O.B. Philip Complex on June 12.

The Kamloops, B.C.-born colonel is taking over from outgoing Brig.-Gen Daniel Coutts, who had been wing commander since 2023.

Health Foundation’s ‘Concerts in the Park’ returned to mark 30-year milestone The Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF) celebrated a major milestone this past summer with the 30th anniversary of its long running “Concerts in the Park” series.

Crescent Park Amphitheatre once again was filled with music, joy, and community spirit — all in support of better health care for Moose Jaw’s residents.

The series features free live music performed by local bands each week.

Running Festival raises over $15K for Moose Jaw Health Foundation The Moose Jaw Running Festival made its official debut on June 8 — and crossed the finish line with a record-setting result.

Moose Jaw-born filmmaker earns national acclaim for surrealist horror short A Moose Jaw-raised filmmaker turned heads in Canada’s independent film scene with a haunting short that explored fear, pain and identity — all through the eyes of a man getting his first tattoo. Jett Kowalchuk, now based in Saskatoon, is the creator of John’s First Tattoo, a silent surrealist horror short that recently earned him accolades from several prominent festivals, including the Saskatchewan International Film Festival and the Yorkton Film Festival, the latter of which is the longest continuously running film festival in North America.

June - july Moose Jaw-area Catholic students raised over $5K to support national campaign Catholic students and staff from the region raised thousands of dollars to support faith-based education in areas of Canada where pursuing such learning is financially difficult for some families.

Holy Trinity Catholic School Division raised the money during Catholic Education Week for the “Toonies for Tuition” program, which the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA) organized.

Saskatchewan won the overall national fundraising title — it collected $28,324 — as it raised the most per full-time equivalent student. The top three school divisions were

Prince Albert with $6,441.99, Moose Jaw’s Holy Trinity with $5,207.25 and Weyburn with $4,100.

In Holy Trinity, the schools that raised the most were St. Michael with $1,724, Vanier/Phoenix with $780, All Saints in Swift Current with $692 and École St. Margaret with $585. However, However, based on the amount raised per student, the top schools were St. Michael with $5.39 per student, St. Margaret with $2.72 per student and Christ the King (Shaunavon) with $1.93 per student.

Polupski receives SHSAA Service Award for dedication to high school athletics Lorne Polupski’s name is synonymous with dedication, leadership, and passion for high school athletics in Moose Jaw. Honored with the 2025 Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Service Award, Polupski’s contributions to the local sports community have been immeasurable. Polupski, a coach at A.E. Peacock Collegiate, spent decades shaping the lives of young athletes in the South Central District.

The SHSAA Service Award is presented to individuals who have shown outstanding leadership and service, and Polupski’s recognition is a testament to his years of dedicated work in promoting high school athletics.

ParkArt ’25 saw record-setting vendor turnout, fell just shy of pre-pandemic attendance record More than 4,000 people filled Crescent Park on Canada Day for ParkArt ’25, as the largest annual arts fundraiser for the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery (MJMAG) returned with record-setting vendor numbers and high community energy — even if overall attendance fell just short of a new record as organizers had anticipated.

The July 1 event, hosted by the MJMAG, brought in 82 vendors offering everything from pottery and painting to handmade jewelry, soaps, textiles, and baked goods. It was the most booths ever hosted in the event’s decades-long history, surpassing last year’s total of 76.

Sacred Heart students and staff say goodbye as school closes Sacred Heart School was one of four Moose Jaw schools that shut down, alongside Westmount Elementary School, Empire School, and St. Mary School. Most students transitioned to the new joint-use school in the fall, with others moving to high school as Sacred Heart’s last graduating class.

The new joint-use school, named Our Lady of Hope for Holy Trinity Catholic School Division students, is located at 1700 Vermont Road and is set to open on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

As Shania Twain’s tour rolled across Canada, the country music icon gave back in a big way — including a stop in Moose Jaw. Ahead of her Monday, July 7 concert at the Temple Gardens Centre, Twain announced a $25,000 donation through the Shania Twain Foundation, in partnership with Second Harvest, to support food relief efforts in the city.

The funding helped rescue and redistribute 75,000 meals through six local nonprofit partners, including the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank.

Sidewalk Days ’25 draws thousands to downtown Moose Jaw Thousands of tourists, residents, shoppers, and families filled Main Street North last week as the annual Kinsmen Sidewalk Days Festival returned to downtown Moose Jaw from July 3 to 5. Festivalgoers lined nine blocks in the city’s downtown core. This year’s event featured 249 vendors, with everything from food trucks and crafts to clothing, souvenirs, and home and garden goods.

Younger guests enjoyed bouncy castles, games, and a roaming magician at the Children’s Village, while the Moose Jaw Co-op Chill Tent offered families a shaded place to cool off. The Friendly City Optimist Club recognized two outstanding Grade 12 students from Moose Jaw with its annual “Friend of Youth” scholarships.

On June 24, Ireland Guillaume and Arlyn Dagsaan Dequina were each presented with a $1,000 scholarship, which is awarded to students who have shown exceptional commitment to their community. The scholarship decision is made by a committee, and this year, both Ireland and Arlyn were chosen for their dedication and achievements.

Moose Jaw Warriors Alumni Golf Tournament receives tremendous support from community

It’s one of the highlights of the off-season for the Moose Jaw Warriors every summer, and an event that sits close to the heart of many former players from the Western Hockey League club. A field of 140 golfers took part in the 2025 edition of the Velocity Ford Warriors Alumni Golf Tournament at the Hillcrest Golf Club, with current players, coaches and supporters joined by dozens of former players in support of the team’s education fund.

And has become a regular occurrence for the event, it was once again a huge success, with an expected $100,000 plus to be added to the fund’s coffers once things are all said and done.

july - AUGUST Three new constables take oath at Moose Jaw Police Service ceremony The Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) officially welcomed three new recruits into its ranks during a swearing-in ceremony held at the police station on July 11.

Griffin Barrett, Brooke Paul, and Kyle Murphy each took the oath of office before the Honourable David Chow, Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, surrounded by family, friends, and police personnel.

The recruits begin their 21-week training at the Saskatchewan Police College later that month, with graduation expected in December.

The ‘25 Sask. Festival of Words The Saskatchewan Festival of Words brought Moose Jaw’s literary community to life in July, offering four days of readings, panels, performances and connection — all centred around the power of language and the written word.

From the quiet corners of the Moose Jaw Public Library to the main stage of the Mae Wilson Theatre, readers and writers alike gathered for a wide range of events that celebrated poetry, prose, and performance. The festival opened July 17 with a powerful morning workshop led by Richard Van Camp, who shared what he called “30 years of lessons from the front lines of full-time writing.” Held at the Moose Jaw Centre for Arts and Culture, his session set the tone for a weekend rooted in connection, creativity, and craft.

He took first place in the heat races with a total of 806 points and then put up 823 in the final to edge B.C.’s Ken Stroud by six points. Moose Jaw Legion netted almost $80K in this year’s Poppy Campaign

Moose Javians were exceptionally charitable in supporting this year’s Legion Poppy Campaign, as Branch No. 59 collected nearly $80,000 — one of the highest totals in recent years. This year’s campaign saw the Royal Canadian Legion sell wreaths to businesses, collect donations during the Moose Jaw Warriors’ Oct. 31 game, acquire funds on Poppy Day on Nov. 1 and collect money during the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Temple

Gardens Centre on Nov. 11.

These activities generated $78,600 for Branch No. 59, which will use the money to support veterans and their families, help youth and cadet organizations and promote remembrance of those men and women who died to keep Canada free.

Boychuk and Brodziak inducted into Warriors and Legends Hall of Fame Two celebrated Moose Jaw Warriors alumni were officially welcomed into the Warriors and Legends Hall of Fame as defenceman Johnny Boychuk and forward Kyle Brodziak were inducted at the Temple Gardens Centre on Nov. 21. Boychuk, originally from Edmonton, Alta., entered the Western Hockey League as a first-round pick of the Calgary Hitmen in the 1999 WHL Prospects Draft.

He played 177 regular-season games in Calgary before joining the Warriors midway through the 2002–03 season. Over two years in Moose Jaw, he appeared in 89 games, contributing 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points and helping the team capture the 2004 East Division championship. Selected 61st overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Boychuk went on to play 15 seasons in the National Hockey League with Colorado, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Islanders. He appeared in 725 regular-season NHL games, recorded 206 points, and won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011.

Brodziak, from Vegreville, Alta., was the Warriors’ first-round WHL Prospects Draft selection in 1999, taken 14th overall.

‘Paws for Pledges’ radiothon surpasses $90K goal for Moose Jaw Humane Society The Moose Jaw Humane Society’s largest annual fundraiser wrapped up another successful year, raising much-needed funds through its 13th annual “Paws for Pledges” radiothon.

Held Nov. 7 in partnership with Country 100 FM, they brought in $98,858 in donations — surpassing the shelter’s $90,000 goal thanks to a steady stream of phone-in pledges, in-person visits, and online gifts that continued to arrive even after the final tally was announced.

Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant celebrates ‘remarkable legacy’ of 70 years

After experiencing water shortages in the 1940s, Moose Jaw and Regina collaborated to build a water treatment plant, and by 1955, the plant was operational and a reliable source of water. Seventy years later, the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant (BPWTP) supports more than 300,000 people in the region — nearly 25 per cent of the province’s population — and will support over 400,000 people once the plant renewal project concludes in 2027. A cherished holiday tradition returned to the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital on Nov. 21 as the Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF) officially lit its Rockefeller Christmas tree, a familiar sight that helps brighten the hospital environment for patients, visiting families, and frontline medical staff during the holiday season.

The 18-foot tree, positioned prominently inside the hospital’s front lobby, was unveiled during a brief gathering hosted by the Foundation. This year’s installation was made possible through a combined $60,000 sponsorship from JGL Livestock and Golden West Trailers — a partnership that emerged during October’s “Festival of Trees” gala, where JGL secured naming rights with a $30,000 bid before Golden West stepped forward to match it.

DECEMBER Operation Christmas Child sees another successful year in Moose Jaw Hundreds of carefully packed shoeboxes are now on their way to children around the world after this year’s Operation Christmas Child packing party wrapped up at Victory Church.

The three-day party, held in November, drew a steady stream of volunteers who worked together to fill the shoeboxes with essential and meaningful gifts. Volunteer leader Mary Ellen Willis, who has been at the heart of the local effort for over a decade said 1,790 boxes were packed.

‘I Bought a Lunch’ campaign tops $75K goal for children’s lunch program Hunger in Moose Jaw’s “I Bought a Lunch” campaign pushed past its fundraising goal for the year, with donations still coming in weeks after the initiative officially wrapped up.

The 15th annual campaign, which supports the non-profit’s Child Nutrition School Lunch Program, technically concluded in early December, pushing the total over the $75,000 mark.

Rhaea Stinn surpasses her own world record, adds sixth powerlifting title

Moose Jaw’s Rhaea Stinn lifted her way into history yet again, claiming her sixth consecutive world championship title and breaking her own bench press world record in the process.

Stinn claimed gold at the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Open Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, delivering a flawless nine-for-nine performance en route to a 701-kilogram total and a personal best.

Moose Jaw’s Cameron Billy captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) amateur cruiserweight title in Muay Thai, marking a milestone in the fast-growing combat sport known as “the art of eight limbs.”

Billy earned the title during Muay Thai World Cup 13, held at the Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino in Kananaskis, Alta., where he defeated Calgary’s Sean Newberry in a tightly contested matchup. The tournament featured amateur and professional bouts in the sport known for its use of punches, kicks, elbows and knees.

Billy, who trains at Control Jiu Jitsu in Moose Jaw, said the title represents three years of dedicated training that began when he arrived at the gym with no background in the sport.
