Sask Polytech Startup Challenge opens doors for local entrepreneurs Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Local entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners are invited to participate in the Sask Polytech Startup Challenge, a provincewide program returning in early 2026 to support the growth of early-stage ventures with the chance to earn up to $10,000. The Startup Challenge is a mentorship and pitch competition led by Sask Polytech’s Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (BIEC), aimed at supporting early-stage businesses, social enterprises, and student-led startup ideas. The program combines structured mentorship and skill-building workshops, culminating in a final pitch event next spring. Applications are now open and will be accepted until Jan. 12, 2026. Running from January through April, the challenge offers selected participants a 10-week program that includes virtual sessions led by BIEC staff and industry mentors once every two weeks. The sessions are designed to help founders refine their business models, strengthen their value propositions, and prepare a competitive pitch for investors and judges. The program is open to two groups: Saskatchewan-based entrepreneurs operating early-stage businesses or social enterprises with revenue, and Sask Polytech students who have a venture idea that’s ready to move beyond the concept stage. Spots are limited, and priority will be given to ap-

plicants who demonstrate a commitment to community impact. Each participant will be paired with an industry mentor, providing one-on-one guidance and accountability throughout the program. Organizers describe the mentorship component as a key feature of the challenge, giving founders access to experienced professionals from a range of sectors. The challenge will culminate in a final showcase and pitch event held in mid-April at the Town ‘N’ Country Mall, where finalists will present their ventures to a panel of judges made up of industry leaders and community partners. Cash prizes are available in both com-

petition streams. In the early-stage venture category, first place will receive $10,000, followed by $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third. The student stream offers prizes of $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second, and $500 for third, with additional themed awards totalling $4,000 also up for grabs. Organizers note that any projects developed during the challenge — including all associated intellectual property — remain the property of the participants. While Sask Polytech may feature projects for promotional and educational purposes, founders retain full ownership of their ideas and businesses. Participants must commit to scheduled virtual workshops and attend the in-person pitch event in Moose Jaw. Businesses operating in certain sectors — including controlled substances, gambling, adult entertainment, and predatory financial services — are not eligible to participate. The competition is supported by the Town ‘N’ Country Mall, HarvestGuard Agronomy, and the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce. Entrepreneurs and students can find full details and the application form online at SaskPolytech.ca. Questions can be directed to BIEC@SaskPolytech.ca. The Moose Jaw campus is located at 600 Saskatchewan Street West and can be reached at 1-866-467-4278.
