LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Put on your green, tis the season for luck and good fortune. The countdown is on for Saint Patrick’s Day, while not a legal holiday anywhere in the United States, is nonetheless widely recognized and celebrated throughout the country. It is observed as a celebration of Irish and Irish American culture that include prominent displays of the color green, eating and drinking, religious observances, and numerous parades and parties. And of course EVERYONE is IRISH that day!

Luck has also been long associated with the Irish, but after studying about the Irish and their luck, it seems it may have been only just a saying or the opposite at best. The Irish did not survive the long potato famine and being treated as 3rd class citizens upon their arrival to the U.S. ( til the midlate 1900’s) by LUCK instead it was because of positive outlooks and the great sense of humors. So, you too can be lucky- it’s an easy skill to learn. There was a study done a few years back and the conclusion to Luck was this: it’s more of an attitude and, positive outlooks on bad situations. So good choices, thoughts and behavior are the key to good luck!!!! May the Luck of the Irish be with you, may you rise up and persevere and drink up the Green Beer! Cheers….. Be safe while partying with all those little Leprechauns.

Dawn Trapp

Bringing the Next Generation of Aiello Food Service to Moon Valley

With the sale of my Moon Valley namesake, Isa’s Pizza, it felt as though a piece of myself and my childhood memories were sold with it. Looking back on every time someone would ask if I was going to take over the restaurants one day, my response would always be something along the lines of “Not a chance in the world, but how’s your dinner? May I get you anything else?”

They say “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone” and until recently, I never realized how true this really is. While I didn’t want to admit it at the time, I now understand that I have a deep rooted love for the industry and the ability to bring people joy through food, hospitality, and celebration!

Shortly after the restaurants were out of the picture, I began my career in HOA management as a Lifestyle and Communications Director. While planning our communities’ extravaganzas, I found myself wasting hours struggling to find reliable vendors who could flex around the needs of my events. I eventually stopped the vendor hunt and started to do it all myself, quickly finding out that nobody could bring a vision to life better than me.

As this went on, I began to reminisce about businesses and all of the pride, freedom and creative liberty that working for yourself brings. If the opportunity still existed today, my once “Not a chance in the world.” response would now be “Yes, in a heartbeat.”

The Bar Top:

Equipped with two taps allowing us to batchmake and keg any signature cocktail, wine, or beer. This top can meet all of your bartending needs with different package options to fit your budget.

From this realization came the idea of Poppy & Co - a custom event cart that can truly do it all. Named after my beautiful daughter Poppy, this cart idea ignited a spark in me that I forgot I once had for the restaurant and catering business. I then made it my mission to build one (absolutely gorgeous if you ask me) cart that can take on the needs of almost any event and bring your wildest idea to life.

So, I put pen to paper and sketched the first version of the cart. After numerous meetings with carpenters who said it would never work, I finally found Canary Workshop who saw my idea and ran with it. From there, Poppy & Co Custom Event Cart came to be, and we are ready to service your next event in whatever capacity you need.

Our one cart has three interchangeable tops that were made to seamlessly transition from one to another throughout an event. This allows us to cater your appetizers, be your bartenders, AND have dessert covered for you at the end of the night. One-stop shopping!

While you’re welcome to book only one top, the flexibility of Poppy & Co takes the stress of vendor hunting off your shoulders and lets you rest easy knowing that we will treat your special occasion like our own. Here’s a snippet of our cart tops and what they can do:

The Sundae Top:

Bringing the ice cream parlor straight to your front door! Opening to a drop freezer below, the Sundae Top allows you to pick three ice cream offerings for your guests and twelve toppings, making every sundae one of a kind.

The Snack Top:

The top that can do it all! From build your own charcuterie boards to Taco, S’mores, Hotdog and Nacho bars, our open-menu based mindset for this top can absolutely be tailored to your next big occasion.

While it will be in a much different capacity than what the community has been used to for over 11 years, I am so excited and grateful to be able to bring the Aiello spirit of food service back to Moon Valley and straight to your front door. I can’t wait to see you at your next event!

Passing the Torch.

We are beyond thrilled and proud that Isa continued with our passion of food, beverage, and hospitality in The Valley and especially in our Moon Valley Community.

While not a brick-and-mortar restaurant, (And not Italian), Poppy & Co withholds the vision of what we have established over the past 20 years of creating beautiful memories for our community to remember forever.

After hosting hundreds of special events, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and community fundraisers over the years, Poppy & Co brings a fresh unique twist to a one stop shop for your upcoming event.  Specialty craft, draft cocktails or your own unique bar open the event, then add an  abbondanza antipasti or caricature bar to launch your occasion. Isa’s custom, gorgeous cart has interchangeable tops that lend for an unique evening with a finish of a s’mores or ice cream sundae extravaganza.  It’s truly a one stop shop for your special day.

Shhh!

She hasn’t realized it yet, but we are sure she will get the itch and extend her Dad’s recipes to complete the Aiello’s fix you’ve been missing and craving.   One Vendor, one unique and spectacular event for a special touch in your lives and memories for years to come.  We miss you all, but… the tradition continues…kinda.

The Neighborhood kids: Thunderbird Basketball

Thunderbird Boys Basketball 2023-2024 season came to a successful finish in late February with the Varsity boys getting to the Open Championship for the first time and the Quarterfinals of the 4A State Championship.  This is the best season from the Varsity team in over 20 years; ranked at #8 in the state, with a 17-1 record. They never lost a game on their home court.

The Varsity team had nine seniors on the squad; most who have played together since elementary school.  These same boys won their basketball championship at Lookout Mountain and again when they attended Mountain Sky.  Several played together on club teams and are best friends.  Several seniors were recognized by the Arizona Interscholastic Association for their performance this year, as well as one junior.

Will Clark, All-Region First Team and Defensive Player of the Year

Aidan Rampley, All-Region 2nd Team

Kanai Tap, Honorable Mention

Head Coach, Jesus Flores, was named Region Coach of the Year.   Coach Flores is also successful in building the basketball program from within the community of Moon Valley.  He invites neighborhood young kids to a summer basketball camp offered each summer.  Along with hosting a Mountain Sky game at Thunderbird’s gym, he also hosted two ‘Little Titan’ nights at Varsity home games, which gave the opportunity for kids in the neighborhood to watch a high school basketball at no charge and leave with some Titan swag.  Before one of these ‘Little Titan’ nights, he had the Varsity team play ball at Lookout Mountain Elementary School with the kids at their recess.  Principal Tricia Heller-Johnson of Lookout Mountain Elementary was thrilled to have her students connect with the older boys (several who she’s known since they were Kindergartners themselves).

The Thunderbird Basketball Booster Club, managed and run by parents of players, raised record funds this season to help support the programs efforts.  From large corporate sponsors to small/local Moon Valley businesses like, Barros Pizza, Serafina Coffee, Paint My Place, Clark Heating & Cooling, Simple Machine Brewing and Ping!   Without their sponsorship, the program would not be able to fulfill the needs to be a strong program.  The big endeavor this year was the renovation of the gym lobby.  Thanks to our sponsors (and a little labor from the team) the lobby has new flooring, paint, celling, graphics and furniture!  We invite all Moon Valley residents to support the boys Basketball program or at the very least come out to watch some great basketball!

WHEN TO REVIEW AND RENEW YOUR ESTATE PLAN

Change is inevitable. With estate planning, you put in place the best plan you can at the time. However, as changes come in your life and in the law, your plan may need some changes too. So when should you review – and possibly renew –your estate plan? Here are some specific times you need to call for a review.

Changes in Your Life

Have you had any major changes in your life? Has your spouse died? Did you get a divorce? Have you gotten married? All of these require an update in your plan, even if you are keeping your Trustees or agents and your beneficiaries the same.

Other changes that may necessitate a change include an increase (or decrease) in your net worth; receiving or anticipating an inheritance; moving out of state; buying a second home or rental properties; and acquiring assets that you didn’t own when you created your estate plan.

Changes in the Lives of Your Trustees and Agents

When you put your estate plan in place, you made the best choice for who would take charge of your estate at that time. As time passes, however, that choice may no longer be the best. Has your agent or Trustee aged to a point where they may not be able to handle your estate when called upon? Have they passed on? Are they too ill to serve? Have they moved overseas? Looking at who you named as your Trustees, personal representatives and agents is your first step in thinking about whether your plan needs an update.

Changes in the Lives of Your Beneficiaries

Who are your beneficiaries, and what is their current situation? If you put your plan in place when your children were minors and they now have children of their own, you need an update! Things can change in a beneficiary’s life, and that needs to be taken into account when we plan. A beneficiary who is going through a rough patch in their marriage or has creditor issues may need protections for their inheritance that weren’t necessary when you first created your plan. If one of your beneficiaries has special needs that weren’t present

when you made your plan, you may need to set up a special needs trust. If you’re not sure whether the changes in your beneficiary’s life require a change in your estate plan, come in for a consult and let’s figure that out together.

Changes in the Law

One change that can make a difference in your plan isn’t even something you brought about. Federal or state law may change, necessitating a change to your plan. Currently, the big change is the passage of the SECURE Act. For more on that, see my article The SECURE Act and Planning for Your Retirement Accounts.

Other changes occurred in the last several years, and if you didn’t have your estate plan reviewed, you should make an appointment soon. In Arizona, the trust code changed in 2008. If your estate plan was put in place before 2008, a review is a very good idea, because the law on which it was based is now very different.

In addition, the federal estate tax exemption is now $11.4 Million per person. Your estate plan might have been put in place when the exemption was much lower, and you needed a complex plan to avoid the 40% estate tax. Now, you may not need that complex planning, and putting a far simpler plan in place will make it easier for your surviving spouse and children to administer. In particular, if your estate plan was created before 2012, you should have a review.

A Review Every Three to Five Years

I tell clients often that to decide on what plan is best for you, I need to know what you are planning for (what are your assets, what is your health status) and who you are planning for (what beneficiaries will receive your assets on your death, and what is their situation). If there are changes in the what or the who, then you need a review. A good rule of thumb is to review every three to five years. This review can be a simple phone call to check in and go over the basics of your estate plan and discuss what has transpired since you put it in place.

If you know you need changes to your trust plan (or if you haven’t put an estate plan in place yet), we offer a 15-minute phone consultation, and if we are a good fit to revise your current trust, a free initial consultation. Call us at 602-375-6752 or visit www.libbybanks.com.

This is really great news. It adds a whole new dimension to the industry. It really opens the door for oodles of senior home buyers.

What am I talking about? FHA has made some startling changes in their Reverse Mortgage for Purchase guidelines. Let me bring you up to speed. This mortgage is called the HECM4P or Home Equity Conversion Mortgage for Purchase, i.e., it allows a qualified buyer, over 62 years of age, to buy a home using a Reverse Mortgage, thus, no payments.

So, this iteration of the Reverse Mortgage has been around for some time. I purchased my home in 2017 with a HECM4P. But, just in the last few months, FHA has updated their guidelines to bring the HECM more in line with “forward mortgages.”

There are two big changes. The first change is that FHA will now allow “Interested Party Contributions.” We used to call these Seller Credits, Lender Credits, Realtor Credits and so on. What is the big deal? Previously, they allowed “No Credits.” Now they allow up to 6% of the sale price.

When I purchased my home in 2017, I had to pay almost $18,000 in loan fees. This was “out of pocket” because with a purchase, you have to come to the table with the buyer’s share of the purchase price, plus all the fees.

What will this cover? All FHA mortgages are covered by mortgage insurance, which indemnifies both the lender and the buyer from loss caused by a default by the other party. To pay for this insurance, all FHA mortgages have an Up-Front Mortgage Insurance Premium (UFMIP). There are also origination fees by the lender, title company fees, prepaids such as property taxes and insurance, and more.

On a $400,000 purchase, 6% would equal $24,000 in fees that could be eliminated. Also, just a few years ago, FHA began allowing the seller to pay fees that were “usual and customary” for the locale, which could include HOA transfer fees, home inspection fees, etc. This is in addition to the 6%. This is a big onus off the back of the buyer.

The second change is that on new construction, FHA will now allow an appraisal well in advance of the previous requirement that the construction

had to be 90% completed. The builder will have to supply “plans and specs” to the appraiser, and the appraisal will have to be tagged “Under Construction subject to the plans and specs.” But this allows the buyer to get his affairs in order, be approved, and get his current home on the market, in anticipation of the projected completion date. This eliminates lots of stress on the buyer.

These are great changes. I predict that this will greatly expand the Reverse Mortgage for Purchase market. Are you thinking about downsizing, or moving closer to the grandkids? You need to explore this option. You will be glad you did.

One last consideration. We all know interest rates are a little higher than we would like to pay, but, with a Reverse Mortgage refinancing is very simple. Most of the fees have been paid in the first go-around. The strategy to refinance when it makes sense, makes even more sense now.

When our team purchased Park Terrace at Greenway our mission was simple: to keep the great sense of community that had been built since its opening while enhancing the community to serve the needs of current and future residents. As we reflect on the journey of Park Terrace, we are filled with gratitude for the residents and team members today. Our recent renovation is more than just a physical transformation; it's a renewal of our promise to provide a welcoming, vibrant home for our residents.

Ron Ziebart, Park Terrace co-owner, commented, "These renovations are a reflection of our commitment to our residents' quality of life. It's about creating spaces that they are proud to call home." This philosophy guided us as we reimagined Park Terrace, ensuring that every decision was made with the best interests of our residents in mind. Ron led the inspiration behind Park Terrace’s recent whimsical kite art installation and overall park theme woven into the main lobby remodel.

We're particularly excited about the new dining and social areas, including a restaurant, bar, and bistro, designed to be the heart of our community.

Bryan Ziebart, Principal of Insight Living, captures our sentiment perfectly: "These spaces are more than amenities; they're where memories are made, where laughter fills the air, and where friendships flourish."

In renewing Park Terrace, we sought to honor its past while embracing the future. Our approach was to blend the beloved character of the Fountains with modern enhancements, creating a living environment that feels both familiar and excitingly new. It's a balance that we believe fosters a sense of belonging and joy among our residents and their families.

We invite you, our neighbors and friends, to visit Park Terrace and see the changes for yourselves. Come and share a coffee in our new bistro, take a stroll through our updated spaces, and feel the warmth and welcome that define our community. It's an open invitation to experience firsthand why we are so proud of what Park Terrace has become and why we believe it represents the very best of senior living.

Eat right? Exercise religiously? Too much stress in your life can lead to metabolic syndrome anyway, elevating your risk of diabetes and other health issues. The mechanism behind the connection? Inflammation Metabolic syndrome (also known as insulin resistance syndrome) is characterized by excess belly fat, high blood pressure, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high fasting blood glucose. For a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, you need to be suffering from at least three of the five variables.

Researchers have found that not only is there a link between stress and metabolic syndrome, but that inflammation explains more than 60% of the association. Findings appear in the research journal Brain, Behavior, & Immunity – Health

The bad news:

It’s estimated the approximately one in three U.S. adults suffers from metabolic syndrome, either diagnosed or undiagnosed. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, metabolic syndrome increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke – or all three.

There’s good news, though: It stands to reason that reducing your stress can reduce the risk factors that lead to metabolic syndrome. As many of the variables are related to exercise and eating habits (when we’re stressed, we’re less likely to work out or eat right), it makes perfect sense.

SCOTT HALL, DEPUTY DIRECTOR HOMELESS SOLUTIONS, UPDATES BMCA

Scott Hall spoke at the recent 2024 Black Mountain Community Alliance. He explained the many service connections the City of Phoenix and private organizations are providing to non-housed people. A high percent of the people who were in “The Zone” downtown have been placed in housing, many now have jobs (often helping others), and many have new hope for bright futures. He experienced homelessness, so he understands a lot about what homeless people need. In addition to parks and other public properties, camping is not allowed by our canals or in alleys. New regulations have been adopted because of dangers to unhoused people.

Several hotels in the I-17 corridor that were being sold or rented are being used for housing and service providers. One attendee asked why the concentration of these efforts? Zoning appears to be the primary reason. Not many established zones allow this type of housing. Additional policing is assigned to adjacent low-income housing to apprehend illegal drug vendors.

Commander Matt Siekmann told us that violent crime is down in our precinct and in much of the country. Property crime also is down in our precinct. Local police and citywide teams are apprehending rings of merchandise theft. Sometimes these crimes sometimes result in dramatic captures with help from store employees. Also, car thefts are down in our area. Fentanyl remains a major challenge because it is very inexpensive here due to our proximity to Mexican sources. It is very addictive and it kills people.

Commander Siekmann urged residents to attend the Department of Justice hearings this month and voice opinions about police practices and what you have seen. Community policing is the way the Department wants to go to be most effective in combating crime. [The City is attempting to negotiate a settlement with the Department of Justice. We will see what happens.]

Traffic stops have been effective. People going 86 in 40 mph zones are a real danger. Many tickets have been issued and some arrests have been made. Commander Siekmann hoped that more traffic enforcement officers will be available to assist local officers.

Fireworks have disturbed the peace at Christmas more each year. The Legislature passed a bill to allow sales of fireworks statewide. Any firework that flies through the air is illegal in Phoenix. There are certain days when other types of fireworks are legal. Otherwise, they are not allowed.

Ann O’Brien, Council District 1, was very excited about the new Community Courts. They are designed to assist homeless people who have been arrested move on to healthy and purposeful lives. Judges are paired with social workers to help people find housing and stability (whatever that takes). People with warrants may be assigned community services positions rather than being placed in jail.

These efforts appear to be hopeful and are likely to not only help people having problems but local communities. They are a good start and we are very supportive of these initiatives. Now, if we can convince people to stop speeding and running red lights, we will become a much safer and more serene city!

Rookie Mom: Very Over the Bipolar Stigma

The nail salon is my respite from life. Every month or 6 weeks, it just takes 2 hours out of my day for total me time.

So imagine my total joy when I overheard a conversation between 2 very ignorant individuals speak about bipolar disorder with celebrities.

“Oh, Britney Spears is totally crazy. She is bipolar for sure. But did you know Selena Gomez is bipolar and you wouldn’t even know it?”

“Selena Gomez does NOT have bipolar. She acts, sings, and has her own beauty line. Nothing like Kanye West. Oh, you know who I think is a bit crazy?”

And then they spit off another celebrity.

As a mother who struggles with bipolar II disorder, my fear of the common interchangeable “bipolar” as “crazy” really breaks my heart… and messes with my mind.

Because all I wanted to say during that conversation was how “doing everything” is a very common sign of bipolar mania which is how Selena Gomez juggles things.

And Britney Spears? Legitimately one of my idols.

No, I don’t think she has bipolar, but clearly she struggles with mental health, so imagine how anyone who struggles with mental health issues clearly does not want to be called crazy because it’s how they’re beating themselves up anyhow.

At least they are showing up every day despite themselves.

And then another conversation happened.

This time, at work.

I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty, but the word “bipolar” was also used as a mood descriptor, and let’s say even if it’s correct, it just doesn’t feel kind to use those descriptors in a professional setting.

I cried a bit after hearing that, relaying this frustration to my husband who ensures me that being bipolar is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just a stigma that most people don’t realize they’re using.

But after experiencing a bit of eavesdropping with just regular people and then those I admire, it’s just as tiring as the disease that I can’t prevent or control.

When I’m in bipolar depression, I sleep more. Motivation is light and my priority is my children. My attention goes to them.

When I’m in bipolar anxiety, which is for me 90% of the time, I worry about what everyone thinks of me and what I do and how it affects them, etc. My nervous system is shot and my priority is myself: regulating my sleep and my social attention.

When I edge off either of those, I’m in hypomania which means that a hospital ride isn’t short away from full-blown mania.

And this cycle is brutal. So stupidly brutal – this crazy cycle from a crazy person afraid to be labeled as “crazy.”

So, if you’ve gotten this far into the column, my advice is I guess, is to just be aware of people who are trying because they might be sitting right next to you, or working for you, or something else entirely.

(Oh, and here is a list of adjectives you probably want to use if you’re wanting to use “bipolar” in a sentence: indecisive, temperamental, capricious, erratic, mercurial, unpredictable, finicky, moody. You’re welcome.)

AGE FRIENDLY BATHROOMS

There is a record number of Baby Boomers retiring and wanting to age in place. Aging In Place is the ability to live in your home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. If you want to remain in your house throughout your maturing years there are modifications that need to be made to your bathrooms.

To age in place safely and comfortably, you may need these modifications to your home.

Install a handheld sprayer at your shower. Not only does it make it easier for you to bathe, they can also be a wonderful tool for cleaning the shower.

Widen your doorways to support the use of a cane, walker, or wheelchair. An inexpensive approach to widening doorways a few inches is to add offset hinges to your current door.

Curbless Showers are a great addition for your shower. Not only do they allow wheelchair assistance, it also keeps you from tripping over the curb.

Install grab bars at your shower and toilet to prevent falling. They are necessary as you get older and for recuperating from an illness.

Wall mount sinks and vanities provide accessibility for wheelchairs. You can design a wheelchair friendly vanity that is usable for everyone.

Moon Valley Chiropractic Care Offers a Wellspring of Satisfaction

A significant percentage of US adults routinely seek out chiropractic services for primary care support. In turn, they experience positive related benefits of enhanced well-being and reduced discomfort. Many peerreviewed studies support the combination of integrating chiropractic and conventional health interventions, reporting improved outcomes and less dependence on pharmaceutical medications.

Researchers recently looked closely at factors such as the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of chiropractic services among consumers. *** The report revealed that back pain and neck pain were the most common conditions for seeking chiropractic consultations. Recipients widely expressed a great deal of satisfaction and relief with their health problems because of incorporating chiropractic services.

The cross-sectional data utilized in the review was taken from the National Health Interview Survey and then analyzed to examine the lifetime and 12-month prevalence and utilization patterns of chiropractic use, profile of chiropractic users, and health-related predictors of chiropractic consultations. 23.0% of the patients reviewed received a prescription referral, while 35.0% received a recommendation for over-the-counter medication relating to the same health condition for which chiropractic was sought, where 63.8% overall remarked that the utilization of chiropractic care was substantially helpful.

Fortunately, chiropractic care is also known to be beneficial in the treatment of conditions such as shoulder pain, headaches, carpal tunnel, knee conditions, and many more. Spring is an ideal time for exploring ways that chiropractic treatments will enhance your overall health and well-being keeping you feeling more vibrant and mobile for years to come. Love, Luck, Laughter and Life

MOON VALLEY MAGIC

Well, I missed the January deadline because it was the day after Christmas and I was busy before and sad after. We had the most amazing time with our three sons and their girlfriends, but it was quite depressing after they all left. Now that all three of the ‘boys’ are in love, we have to share major holidays with the gf families. It’s only fair, but it’s still sad we don’t get them all to ourselves. I hit a snag with my February submission, so here I am still in February, writing for March.

February is the month dedicated to Love, but Gary and I didn’t actually celebrate Valentine’s Day. We don’t feel we need a special day to show our love, as we do it every day. We were lucky my shy sister ran into Gary at lunch almost 44 years ago. She got up the nerve to talk to him and suggest he call me. A couple of days later, on Friday the 13th in June of 1980, we went on our first date. We’d been friends in high school, but lost touch during college. We were very happy to have found each other again, but under different circumstances and not as immature teenagers.

March is all about Luck and Leprechauns, unless Easter is also in March, which it is this year. Neither of us is Irish, but we do love corn beef and cabbage, so I’m planning on that scrumptious meal in a few weeks. Neither of us is Mexican, but we eat a lot of that and not just on Cinco de Mayo, so why we only eat corn beef and cabbage once a year is a mystery!

Life has been full of ailments lately. It comes with our ages, but since we don’t feel old, it’s kind of insulting. Then I look in the mirror, which I am loathe to do, and I see my mom. Not my mom when she was ‘young’ either! We have to remind ourselves that we’re lucky to reach our ages, as so many of our friends have not.

Then there’s laughter. I love alliteration. All those ‘L’ words are bringing me joy. Laughing fills my cup and I’m living my best life when I’m with my family, because there is a lot of love and laughter in our lives. There’s also some head shaking at those cold plunges they do in our pool in the dead of winter. Even though our winter is nothing like the ones back east…still!

Advocating for Children in Foster Care: Volunteers Needed

As we leave Black History Month, we would like to show homage to pioneering figures, such as Shirley Chisholm who became the first black woman to be elected to Congress, Bayard Rustin who organized and strategized the March on Washington in August 1963, and Mae Johnson the first black woman who orbited space aboard the Shuttle Endeavour. With honoring these achievements and individuals, we are calling on communities across the state to join us in advocating and supporting children in foster care. We are seeking volunteers to make a difference in the lives of these children.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, black children are likely to enter and remain in foster care for longer periods of time and who are often overrepresented in the foster care system. This disparity highlights the need for volunteers to step in and provide support and advocacy for the children in care.

Volunteers can make a difference in various ways and being a consistent and supportive voice in the lives of foster children is one of them. By offering their time, volunteers can help improve the overall wellbeing and outcomes for children in foster care from all backgrounds.

So come join us and help overcome barriers and create opportunities to succeed. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children in foster care and honor the legacy of black Americans who have paved the way for future generations.

The Foster Care Review Board is a five-member panel that make recommendations to the Juvenile Court. There are Boards in each of Arizona’s 15 counties and the volunteers are appointed by the Presiding juvenile Court Judge. Volunteers do not need any prior special training and come from all walks of life. Anyone 21 years of age or older, who can pass a background check, is available one weekday per month and can complete a one- or twoday training, is encouraged to apply. To learn more about becoming a FCRB volunteer and to find your local program visit, www.azfcrb.org.

If you are seeking a volunteer opportunity with more of a direct link to advocate for a child in Arizona’s foster care system, the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program may be the one for you. CASA is a volunteerbased program administered by the Dependent Children’s Services Division of the Arizona Supreme Court. When you become a CASA, you visit the child you are paired with once a month, advocate for their best interest, and make recommendations to the Court regarding their placement and permanency plan. The requirements to become a CASA are that you must be at least 21 years of age, pass a background check, able to dedicate 10-12 hours per month, and complete 30-hours of pre-service raining. To learn more about becoming a CASA volunteer visit, www.AZCASAVolunteer.org.

Big fat tires on bicycles!

Why are there tires 4 inch wide on bikes?

The easy answer they were made for riding on the beach and snow in the north. In Arizona they work well on dry sand washes. Riding them on the street or trails is hard because of the weight. Four inches of tire rolling on the ground makes a lot of resistance. They do make a soft ride but slower and more work. Electric bikes have made them even more popular. No problem until you run out of battery power and need to pedal home several miles. Wide tires are great for some places but smaller tires are less money and more useful.

Chose a tire that fits the need, not the look.

Lookout Mountain Qualified for Top 68 Schools in the State for the Read to the Final Four Program

Congratulations to Ms. Kelly’s class at Lookout Mountain Elementary School. They qualified Lookout Mountain for the Top 68 schools in the Read to the Final Four program. The Read to the Final Four program is a literacy challenge aimed at creating a lifelong love and interest in reading for third-grade students across Arizona. The challenge coincides with Phoenix hosting the NCAA Men’s Final Four in April. As part of the challenge, Ms. Kelly’s students logged their minutes read in class and at home, and entered their results weekly. The average minutes read per student per school were calculated, with each school’s best four weeks identified for qualification to the bracket competition and Top 68. This was an amazing feat for Lookout Mountain as 241 schools in the state are participating. Way to go, Lions!

Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a common oral health condition that affects the gums and surrounding tissues. This document aims to provide an informative overview of periodontal disease, its causes, symptoms, and potential risks. Understanding periodontal disease is crucial for maintaining good oral hygiene and overall health.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It occurs when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on the teeth and hardens into tartar. The bacteria in plaque and tartar release toxins that irritate the gums, leading to inflammation and infection.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

The main cause of periodontal disease is poor oral hygiene. Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque to accumulate, leading to gum inflammation. Other factors that can increase the risk of developing periodontal disease include smoking, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy), certain medications, genetic predisposition, and certain systemic diseases like diabetes.

Common Symptoms

Periodontal disease can range from mild gingivitis, which causes gum inflammation, to advanced periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss. Here are some common symptoms to watch out for:

1. Gum inflammation: Red, swollen, or tender gums.

2. Bleeding gums: Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing.

3. Receding gums: Gums that appear to be pulling away from the teeth.

4. Persistent bad breath: Ongoing halitosis that doesn’t improve with oral hygiene.

5. Tooth sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.

6. Loose teeth: Teeth that feel loose or have shifted in position.

7. Pain or discomfort: Discomfort while chewing or brushing.

Risks of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease not only affects oral health but can also have systemic implications. Here are some of the risks associated with untreated periodontal disease:

1. Tooth loss: If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to the loss of teeth as the infection weakens the supporting structures.

2. Bone loss: Advanced periodontal disease can result in the loss of bone supporting the teeth, leading to changes in facial structure and potential difficulties with eating and speaking.

3. Systemic health implications: Research suggests a link between periodontal disease and various systemic health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

4. Difficulty in managing diabetes: Periodontal disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes.

5. Compromised immune system: The chronic inflammation associated with periodontal disease can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to other infections and illnesses.

Periodontal disease is a common oral health condition that can have significant implications for overall health if left untreated. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease and maintaining proper oral hygiene practices are crucial for preventing and managing this condition. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are also essential for early detection and appropriate treatment of periodontal disease. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, check with your dental provider or call us at AZ Family Dental.

Volunteering With Love at HARTT

National Charity League (NCL) is an incredible organization that allows moms and daughters to work together to better their community. In recent years, the Moon Valley Chapter has worked closely with HARTT, Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team, to provide volunteer and donation opportunities for the ladies of NCL.

Unlike other organizations that do not perform rescues, HARTT prioritizes the safety of animals in potential danger. Due to their special skill set, HARTT is able to rescue animals that are more timid and not as easily acquired. Their humane methods include box traps, jumbo traps, missy traps, drop traps, drop nets, and collarum traps. Each of these processes allows the rescue teams to safely transport the animals back to the shelter where they can be shown love and care by the volunteers. Even their website says, “Volunteers are the lifeblood of HARTT-”
