Hope through Jaydie Lynn King Foundation

The Jaydie Lynn Gift Wrapping event was one I will never forget. It was a great reminder to have hope in our community and that there are always people who will help you, even though the act may seem small.  At the Jaydie Lynn Gift Wrapping event, I took a bag of gifts and supplies to wrap for a family in need. One of the magical aspects was seeing the number of people signed up and ready to get to work.  We accomplished so much that night and we got to do it side by side, with friends and families. It was such an enjoyable night filled with laughter and voices. Out of all the charity events, this is the one I would recommend above all. It just really brings hope and spirit to know you’re helping a family in need and making their Christmas just a little brighter. To learn more about the Jaydie Lynn King Foundation and how you can give a family the holiday of their dreams please visit https://www.teamjaydie.org/

I joined NCL last year, and it was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. NCL is a charity league that fosters the mother-daughter bond through leadership, charity, and personally for me, love. NCL has helped me, and my mom strengthen our bond and have fun in the process. I found enjoyment in helping others, and it always brings a smile to my face to think about the effect I made, no matter how small. It taught me how to understand my community and appreciate it.

If you want to help out your community while being a part of something big, join NCL. Mothers and daughters in 6th grade and up are invited. Join at https://www.nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/moonvalley and let NCL become the change in your life like it was the change in mine.

TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY

What a great feeling, being back in Moon Valley after a long wonderful summer up north. I only wish the weather would break, I must be getting old, the heat seems so intense, although I know it’s coming the sun is rising later everyday   I just want to feel the “fall” in the air.

Changes are everywhere. New buildings, new businesses and many new neighbors are moving in. Looks like we have a few new banks, grocery store, restaurants and many new little businesses to support and spend our time and money. Please take a minute, stop in, introduce yourself get to know your neighbors and welcome them to our community. We are very lucky to live in a small knit community where we do know our neighbors, kids at school, fellow members of the gym and church. I read recently that Ireland has closed many pubs due to high internet use, and lack of neighborly outings. We have some wonderful “pubs,” coffee and tea shops and delicious eateries right here... almost in walking distance- lets help keep them in business!

At a recent network gathering of other like publications, it was said Moon Valley is like no other. We do not have to create an area or boundary that tells people where it is... we know.

And it’s not so bad being “Trapped in Moon Valley.”

But this is Moon Valley, and if there’s one thing we take seriously, it’s our holiday lights.Whether you’re new to the neighborhood or a seasoned veteran of our annual competition, you know that the spirit of friendly rivalry and community pride shines brighter here than anywhere else.

This year, we’re excited to announce a few changes to our beloved Christmas Light Competition. That’s right, you’ll be able to hop on board and join your neighbors as we tour the brightest, most festive displays in Moon Valley. A voting map will be provided, making it easy for everyone to follow along and cast their votes.

Mark your calendars, because voting for the 2024 Christmas Light Awards will open on December 1st and close at midnight on December 8th. And that’s not all—we’re planning a special Winners’ Light Tour on Friday, December 13th. This tour will celebrate our winners and allow everyone to enjoy the dazzling displays across the neighborhood.

Bashas’ Family of Stores Honors Veterans & First Responders with New Discount Program

As part of its long-standing commitment to give back to the communities it serves, Bashas’ Family of Stores recently introduced a new 10% discount program for retired and active-duty military, first responders, and their families. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, the discount is available for in-store purchases made at Bashas’, Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Eddie’s Country Store, and Bashas’ Diné Markets on the first Tuesday of each month, as well as on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day.

“We are truly humbled by the dedication of our nation’s military and first responders,” said Keith Knopf, President & Chief Executive Officer for The Raley’s Companies, the parent company of Bashas’ Family of Stores. “While we could never repay the selfless work of these brave and patriotic individuals, we wish to honor their service and share our gratitude for all they do —and have done.”

The military discount applies to active-duty military, retired military, veterans and their household family members. The first responders discount applies to active firefighters and wildland firefighters including Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, New Mexico Forestry Division, U.S. Forest Services, National Park Services, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, police officers, sheriffs, paramedics, EMTs and their household family members. Members of these groups need to show their military ID or Veterans identification card. If an individual is a member of Something Extra or the Bashas’ Thank You Program, the discount will trigger once the military member enters his/her loyalty number (after the first time).

In addition to the new discount program for military and first responders, Bashas’ Family of Stores is deeply committed to addressing local hunger needs, advocating for good, and focusing on child welfare, the environment and sustainability, food access, food system education, and total wellness.

New Hopes for a New Year

As the Jewish New Year dawns upon us and as Americans nationwide head back to school for a new academic year, it’s a time for renewed hopes. There’s an old story of a telegram that once read, “Start worrying— details to follow.” As the new year begins, it is natural to fall into this mindset, worrying about what lies ahead.

The High Holidays begin on October 2nd with Rosh Hashanah and end with Yom Kippur on October 11-12. One of the central themes of these holidays is the Shofar, a ram’s horn that we blow to mark the occasion.

Rosh Hashanah is a holiday of hope. The Shofar’s blast symbolizes the call of victory, signaling our confidence that the future is bright and that the upcoming year will be full of blessings.

We are excited to be preparing a beautiful High Holiday experience for the greater Moon Valley community. This experience will highlight the hope we all share for a sweet new year. The Rosh Hashanah service will take place at a country club venue with beautiful views of the Moon Valley hills. For those unable to join, there will be an afternoon Shofar blowing in Lookout Mountain Park. You can find the full High Holiday schedule at jewishmoonvalley.com/ highholidays.

As this Jewish & academic new year begins, let us all start with new hopes for a bright year.

Shanah Tovah!

Rookie Mom: Raising An Emotional & Strong-Willed Daughter

Change is in the Air

This one is for all the mamas out there with the daughters who have a “CEO presence.” (A.K.A.: What my older sister calls a bossy and stubborn child.)

There’s this philosophy that says if your child triggers you, there are parts of your unhealed self to observe.

And I need to say, I’ve been triggered so much by my sassy second grader.

Raising kids when they are little and toddlers is a lot easier, I think. Their emotions and tantrums are predictable and easier to calm down and shape.

But my daughter Brynn has big emotions. Whenever there’s an inkling of “we need to talk” type-of-conversation, she goes from 0-100 so fast, often slamming the door and giving the silent treatment.

I know that in talking to my mom friends they say this is normal, but I can’t help but feel like it’s my responsibility (and fault?) for how she deals with those emotions.

No, I don’t want her to store them away and shut down, but I also don’t want her to always be on the defensive. She’s going to have a tough life if that’s how she deals with her emotions.

There’s also that other idea, or so I’ve been told, that it’s good she’s throwing tantrums and on the defensive because that means she feels safe with her parents.

Which is great. I’m glad she feels safe… But this tantrum feeling of safety is driving me crazy.

Is it that she watches too much TV? Is there something else going on at school? Is there something that I’m totally missing as a mother?

But maybe that’s just part of the journey—navigating these emotional highs and lows together, learning from each other along the way.

I realize that my job isn’t to control her emotions or to mold her into someone who never reacts, but rather to guide her in understanding and managing those big feelings – but I’m not going to admit it’s easy.

I want her to keep that CEO presence, to be strong and assertive, but also to know when to listen, when to compromise, and how to express herself in a way that doesn’t push others away.

So, I’ll keep trying, one conversation at a time, one slammed door at a time. Because at the end of the day, I want Brynn to know that even when she’s at her most stubborn and bossy, her feelings are valid, and she’s loved unconditionally.

And maybe, just maybe, one day she’ll thank me for it—right after she finishes running the world.

By September, the novelty of summer has faded, the pool is too hot for swimming, and our readiness for the respite of autumn has arrived. We know cooler days and nights are still a few weeks away and the promise endures!

Daily temps are still over 100 degrees yet change is beginning to happen – small and subtle. The sun’s angle has dropped a few degrees so the light of morning is different. Short shadows have reappeared. These will get longer and darker as the hours of daylight get shorter. And the daylight, it IS getting shorter by a few minutes every single day, most noticeable in the evenings. As this month unfolds, the pace of these shifts increases a bit making the end of September noticeably different than the first days.

Some changes are like that – small, nearly imperceptible yet gaining silent momentum until one day –WOW!   What a difference.

That could be a tear in clothing, a crack in a wall, a dripping faucet, a few weeds, a mistake in a checkbook, a color change in a mole or even a small rift in a relationship. Any of these may seem insignificant yet left unattended, they could prove to have big, even serious consequences. The times when I have ignored, looked away, or outright refused to take care of some of these seemingly small problems, I have paid more (sometimes dearly) to take care of them down the road. My Grandmother used to say, “A stitch in time saves nine.” Like so many other bits of wisdom, she was right.

Do you have any ‘little things’ that need tending? Have you been putting some things off until…whenever. Maybe this is a good time, before the seasons change, to take care of the ‘small things’ to avert the BIG ones! Hansen’s – We’re here when you need us.

Each month the MVWC hosts a luncheon featuring various speakers. These are so well attended that it’s become a challenge sometimes to find a venue big enough. On September 14th, MVWC is hosting a Yum Raiser at Serafina Coffee from 7am to 7pm and is open to the public. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the MVWC Service Project. At Pet Spa, our stylists have over 10 years experience and practice a no fear way of pampering your beloved pup. We take our time with one on one appointments that are limited to a small amount of pups coming through our doors on a daily basis. They are never put in a cage. This approach allows for a calm stress free environment for our stylists and the pups we care for.

From start to finish, your pup will be pampered by their own personal stylist. We care about the health of your pup’s skin and coat and use luxury products hand mixed to their specific needs. We also give them a relaxing blueberry facial with facial massage that they love. They are towel dried then gently hand blow dried. They are then given a mani/pedi, ear cleaning, teeth enzyme spray, face, feet, and sanitary trim with a cut and style to your liking. They leave us happy, looking great, smelling amazing, and so soft to the touch. We do things di erently here and strive for the health and happiness of the furry members of your family.

Looking Forward and

UP MOON VALLEY MAGIC

It’s our birthday month, I share September with Gary, my HS bestie, one brother in law, a dear MV friend, a colleague and no doubt, many others. I haven’t enjoyed one like this since I was 40 and pregnant with our third son, Jaden. No one could believe I was 40 and that’s what made it so cool. Now 25 years later, no one can believe I’m 65 and it is just as life affirming. I am super self-conscious about getting too personal about ‘me’ and all that is personal in my life, but this is kind of epic. I am actually OK being another year older and only my closest friends can appreciate this liberation.

I am frequently asked what my secret is, but I don’t know?? This is all me, I have refused to do botox, fillers, lifts etc. and I don’t wear ‘makeup’ either. I simply do up my eyes and never, ever leave the house without lipstick. I did enough damage to myself on purpose when I was young; not wearing sunscreen and getting sunburned because I thought I looked better pink. It actually took quite a lot to burn in the first place with my Native American heritage, thus…I was not good to myself. Then there’s my obviously very grey hair. That’s another astonishing thing I’ve noticed. Despite it, people can’t believe I’m 65? THAT my friends is an awakened society. I suppose my love of hats and sunglasses is what saved me, but then I discovered facials and the benefits.

Once I started noticing the wrinkles I became diligent about the trio of facials, sunglasses and hats and also started wearing sunscreen on my face and neck. The sun gives us some vitally important vitamin D, so I don’t want to block it all out, but the UV rays are not kind to the sensitive face and neck skin. I lost my local person I got facials from, but Jon fell in love with an amazing young woman, Mikayla, the owner of Variety Skin Studio, and she does my facials now. She’s not in the ‘hood, but worth the drive.

Lately when I’ve looked in the mirror and been discouraged by my crepey, loose skin, I’ve liberated myself with an almost daily mantra, “Oh well. I’m 65 for crying out loud!” and I let it gooooo. I’ve got an incredible man and I’ve been blessed with three amazing boys who became men in love and they adore me, despite my flaws.

Sooo, maybe I do have a secret. Hats, sunglasses, lipstick, facials. . . I never realized it til I wrote this all down! We have too many friends who never made it this far, so it’s time for me to stop complaining and start looking forward to what’s left of my life. When it’s over, I know where I’m going. That’s another thing to make my heart happy! 

*If you need a life changing facial, google Mikayla at Variety Skin Studio, she has quite a following. 

Riding the trail or path in Arizona is great fun. Safety is important riding to the far right when possible. Meeting riders head on is dangerous. Except for passing stay right. When passing other users saying on your left is a nice gesture. A bell can be helpful as a warning of your approach.

The bike path tunnels are very clean compared to year ago. Thank you city workers. Slowing down when entering is a good ideal sometimes there people sleeping be watchful. There are lights in the tunnels but not as bright as day time. Your eyes need to adjust so again slow down. Remember safety is no accident!

Asset Protection for Your Heirs

I was asked recently by a client whether the revocable living trust we were creating for him would protect his assets from his creditors. The answer is no. While the revocable trust is a great estate planning and probate avoidance tool, it is not an asset protection trust. Because you still have full control over the assets in your revocable living trust, the law recognizes that they are your assets, and your creditors can get to them in the same way as if they were in your personal name and not in your trust.

I went on to tell him that while his revocable trust didn’t protect him from his debts, we could structure the inheritance he’s leaving to his children to protect them – and not just from potential creditors. How do we do that? Instead of your trust saying that your beneficiaries get their inheritance outright (i.e., they get a check and do with it what they want), your trust can direct that each beneficiary receives his or her share in an irrevocable trust for each beneficiary.

Trusts Can Keep an Inheritance Out of the Hands of Creditors

These beneficiary trusts do provide asset protection for the trust assets. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. Here is a real-life example (details changed to protect confidentiality): Son started a business, but in the economic downturn of 2008, the business failed. He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing, his Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Instead, because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee.

Had Mom given him the assets in trust, he might have completed the bankruptcy without using the assets in the trust, and after the bankruptcy, the assets in trust could have given him a fresh start.

Trusts Can Protect an Irresponsible Heir from Himself and Still Provide for His Welfare

My client mentioned that his son had addiction issues in the past, and while his son had been clean and sober for a while, he still had concerns.

I mentioned that when we create trusts for beneficiaries at death, the

irrevocable trusts can provide protection for beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well. This works not only for those with addiction issues, but also for children (or the child’s spouse) who are spendthrifts, very bad with money, or just too young to handle the sum they are inheriting. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust will allow for discretionary distributions to your them for their health, education, maintenance and general welfare.

Giving the inheritance in an irrevocable trust allows your beneficiary to benefit from the assets but doesn’t give that person unlimited access to spend on whatever he pleases.

Trusts Can Protect the Inheritance in Case of Your Beneficiary’s Divorce or Death

My client liked the idea of the irrevocable trust, and asked me about protecting his daughter’s inheritance from her husband. The marriage was a bit rocky, and he was concerned about what would happen if she decided to divorce him after getting her inheritance.

I explained that if a beneficiary is divorcing, or has a rocky marriage, leaving the inheritance in trust can assure that your beneficiary keeps the inheritance and doesn’t lose part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the beneficiary and not her spouse.

An outright distribution of the inheritance, however, is likely to be commingled in accounts held by both the beneficiary and her spouse. The assets then may be considered community property and some portion will go to the divorcing spouse.

Another advantage my client liked was the fact that we could state in the trust that when his daughter passed away the remaining Continued on next page

assets in the trust would go to his grandchildren. If his daughter had a healthy marriage and put the inheritance in her name with her husband, what happens when his daughter passes away? If her husband remarries, there is a real possibility that the assets may go to the new wife when he dies, and not to my client’s grandchildren. Providing that the inheritance is to be held in a trust for his daughter, and on her passing for her children, can help prevent this scenario.

My client was very happy to be putting in place protections for his children to assure his hard-earned money would benefit them the way he hoped. If asset protection planning for your heirs is something you would like to discuss – or if you are interested in the revocable living trust for your estate planning, we are glad to assist you.

Lower Your Biological Age

Determining your chronological age is easy – it’s today minus the day you were born (for example, 2024 minus 1969 = 55, give or take a certain number of days depending on your specific birthdate and the day you read this article). We can’t do a thing about how old we are – but we can do a whole lot about how we feel at any age; and how our health reflects it. That’s where your biological age comes in...

Biological age is a reflection of your overall health, and the younger you are, the better, regardless of when you were born. It works in both directions: plenty of 40-year-olds have biological ages well into their 60s, and vice versa. While genetics and good fortune play a certain role, modifiable lifestyle factors (including what you eat) are the biggest influencers of biological age – and recent research proves it.

A younger biological age at the cellular level can be achieved with a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and low in added sugar. In fact, even when eating a healthy diet, even one gram of added sugar can have a negative impact on biological age. That’s the conclusion from a study published in JAMA Network Open and involving nearly 350 women tracked for nearly 10 years into midlife (ages 36-45).

How old do you think you are right now, biologically speaking? If you’re in your 30s and experiencing health issues usually reserved for seniors, that’s a clue. On the other hand, if you’re thriving in your 70s with few or no health issues at all, that’s a clue – that you want to keep doing what you’ve been doing, probably for years.

Live long, live healthy, and enjoy the ride. Talk to your doctor for more information.

A Blast from the Past

I’ve heard homes of seniors referred to as “time capsules.” In many cases, not much has been done to these homes that date from the ‘50s up through the turn of the century. Dated floor plans and furnishings render these homes as a “blast from the past.”

If you are the homeowner of one of these antiquated “heritage” abodes, and are thinking about updating, or perhaps even moving, there are some alternatives for you.

Remodeling, renovation, or whatever you call it, is not a bad idea. Try selling your tired old home, and you will discover it won’t bring the price you are thinking. Even if you are going to sell, it is well worth the time, effort, and cost of renovating. I have heard that the simple task of painting your front door could mean a boost of several thousand dollars when you go to sell.

If you like your home and don’t want to move, sprucing up your current home can bring big rewards. Having the nicest home on the block is a big ego boost.

Regardless of your end-game, there are some great alternatives when it comes to home renovation. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA and VA all have mortgages and loans geared toward exactly this. Additionally, Home Equity loans and Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs) might be just the answer.

Following are general guidelines. If you get into this, get with a knowledgeable mortgage loan officer and learn the specifics. There are degrees of these loans, which are aimed at achieving certain levels of remodeling. If you decide on a minor rehab, which includes no structural modifications, but could include repainting, new doors and windows, appliances, a new AC, permanent landscaping, etc., and is limited to about $35,000, these are pretty simple and do not require an approved Consultant.

released to the contractor at various stages of completion. Generally, these are for much more extensive rehabs.

FHA has similar 203(k) programs, which may not be as restrictive as the Fannie and Freddie versions.

All versions mentioned thus far require new mortgages - purchase or refinance. The strategy is that once completed you will probably want to refinance because the interest on Reno loans is usually a bit higher.

If you have a great, low interest mortgage, these loans may not be for you. Alternatives to a new mortgage include Home Equity loans and HELOCs. You can use these funds for whatever purpose. They are not specifically geared toward home renovation, but using these funds for investments or speculation is not advised, because of the uncertain outcome of such endeavors.

Both Home Equity loans and HELOCs are second mortgages. Home Equity loans are mostly fixed rate and you receive lump sum funds at closing. HELOCs are typically adjustable-rate loans and you receive a pool of funds on which you can draw as needed. These are particularly lucrative if you are handy and intend to do much of the remodel yourself. They are flexible and can be paid off at any time, or rolled into a new first mortgage when the time is right.

If structural changes are considered, such as adding a room, garage, etc., a set of plans is required, which then is presented to the appraiser who prepares “as-completed” appraisal. An approved Consultant is required. They work closely with the licensed contractor to ensure the work is being done correctly, and their blessing (inspection) is required before periodic funds are

If you have been setting on your hands, waiting for a big market readjustment, perhaps now the time is right. Rehab that tired old home and you may never want to relocate. Find a trusted mortgage loan officer and discover your options. There is no cost and you will be glad you did.

THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON

Let’s Celebrate Chiropractic Founders Day!

September 18, 1895, commemorates the day that D.D. Palmer introduced his first patient, Harvey Lillard, to a novel natural health technique. That idea, which brought immediate relief, has now spanned almost one hundred and thirty years and brought much-appreciated benefits to generations. While chiropractic concepts did exist before modern science validated the practice, the discipline has continued to develop and become invaluable in providing new hope to patients. This is why we continue to acknowledge and celebrate Chiropractic Founders Day!

Chiropractic is a professional practice that still transforms lives today. A current example is the extensive number of licensed providers embedded within many Olympic and professional sports teams. Concentrating on preventive care, injury management, and performance enhancement, they work alongside physical therapists, nutritionists, and physicians to provide a holistic approach to athlete well-being. Early chiropractic students were introduced to opportunities to study the healing form as early as 1897, and the first U.S. licensed chiropractor, Dr. Minora Paxton, was recognized in 1904. However, according to historical evidence, chiropractic care can be traced back to ancient Egypt 1500 B.C., Greece, China, and Egypt 1500 B.C. The Greek physician Hippocrates was known to have practiced manual manipulation, recording his position by writing, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is requisite for many diseases.”

A recent article by Chiropractic Economics cited, “a new generational movement is taking place where our youth want drug-free health care,” going on to add that “Focusing on what we learn from surveys, research, and cost analysis will bring us greater awareness of how chiropractic is the answer to

preventing injury and illness in the many years ahead. Growing awareness of chiropractic care is a key component to the future of well-being. Research is a monumental part of developing awareness and the impact of chiropractic care. This research informs other healthcare providers, legislators, politicians, and consumers about why seeing a chiropractor is an excellent choice for their healthcare needs. Showcasing the research builds further opportunities for chiropractic to be involved in several different venues.”

Pharmaceutical and surgical interventions are sometimes less desirable, less practical, and less effective than the many benefits of regular comprehensive chiropractic care. Some conditions suitable for chiropractic care are low back and neck pain, whiplash, headaches, sacroiliac conditions, and knee, shoulder, and wrist pain. Chiropractors have reliably relieved suffering and restored movement and function naturally, resulting in higher productivity and extending relief, leading patients to experience better lives.

Moon Valley Chiropractic provides a thoughtful range of tools for treating patients with top-performing techniques utilizing drop tables, activator methods, and a variety of supportive enhancements that improve patient outcomes and experience. Greetings WESD Partners and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year. The beginning of a new school year is always a time of excitement and anticipation in the WESD. For those that may not know me, I am Paul Stanton, the proud Superintendent of the WESD. I am a product of the district having attended Manzanita Elementary School, and I am fortunate to serve the community I grew up in. This school year, I look forward to sharing with you all of the great works of our students and schools, as well as important district updates and reminders. Thank you for being here and playing an essential role in our WESD Family.

WESD Teacher Named 2025 Teacher of the Year Semifinalist

Congratulations to Jennifer Spector, fifth grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Desert View Elementary School, who was named a top 10 semifinalist for the 2025 Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) Arizona Teacher of the Year Award. Jennifer was selected out of 625 nominations from across the state. The 10 semifinalists will now advance to an in-person interview round with the selection committee. Along with the other teachers, Jennifer will be honored at the AEF awards ceremony on October 19th, where the winner will be revealed. The WESD Family is proud of Jennifer and appreciates all that she does for her students.
