ter ahead. The names of the monthly Full Moons, includ‐ ing the Beaver Moon, have been referenced in the Al‐ manac for decades and are tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore. This period is crucial for all creatures, including humans, to prepare for the first snows of winter, and the New Beaver Moon serves as a reminder that winter is coming and it's time to prepare for the cold months ahead.

November 2023 The first New Moon of November 2023 is set to occur on November 13. It is known as the New Beaver Moon in most Western countries. However, the name may vary depending on your region or the person you ask. The name is believed to have originated from West‐ ern explorers who met Native Americans and adopted some of the names they had for natural events, including the moon cycles. It's a great time to set your intentions for the upcoming month. The Beaver Moon: November 2023 is an essential month for moon enthusiasts as it will witness the first New Moon on November 13 and the Full Moon on No‐ vember 27, known as the Beaver Moon. The name of the New Beaver Moon may vary depending on the region or person you ask, but it is named so because beavers are most active at this time in constructing their river homes and dams. Similarly, the Full Beaver Moon gets its name because, during this time, beavers start taking refuge in their lodges, having stored enough food for the long win‐

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — Happy birth‐ day Scorpio! It's essential to take some time to unwind and relax. Consider planning a weekend getaway to help you chill out. Daydreaming and fantasizing can help stim‐ ulate your mind and keep you inspired. Remember that you don't need the approval of others in your life, and it's important to cut ties that bind you emotionally. Focus on keeping your mind clear and stable. A stressful situation is over, so you can finally stabilize your love relationship. Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22) — It's time for a new you. You've been out of touch with yourself for quite a while now, so making some changes is essential. Alterations are necessary, and it's crucial to communicate your needs to those who want to help you. Immerse yourself in your work and keep your mood upbeat so you can come up with new ideas. Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — Using cau‐ tion will help avoid potential mistakes. When investing, it's best to be conservative and trust your intuition. Be careful of advice from others on investment strategies, as it may not be in your best interest.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — You will thrive under stress if you get organized. An intriguing acquain‐ tance can quickly become a friend and a valuable collab‐ orator at work. A break from the norm may surprise your supervisors, but they will soon see that your way works. Witty comments can help pass the time at work, but tim‐ ing can be crucial in making relationships work. Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — Someone talented at work will ask you to partner up, and it's worth consid‐ ering their proposal. Teaming up with this person could give you the edge you need for career achievements. Re‐ member that influential individuals are watching you, so make a good impression. A past romance may fizzle out, but you will have many future opportunities. Aries (March 21 – April 20) — Delayed projects will start to move forward. Please pay attention to the past and use it to build a brighter future. Don't let old atti‐ tudes keep you from exploring new financial options. Broaden your horizons with new people and places, but avoid rushing into impulse buys or signing legal docu‐ ments. A phone conversation may give you insight into someone's interest in you. Consider going off on your own business, as you could help people make new con‐ nections with their companies. Taurus (April 21 – May 21) — Approach situations with passion this week as intensity is high. Your career suc‐ cess depends upon your willingness to put into action new visions. Be innovative and make decisions, but pace yourself to avoid burnout. Stress reduction techniques can help you cope with the unbearable. When this cycle is over, you'll be ready for that vacation. Gemini (May 22 – June 21) — Explore new business ventures and leave your rut. You can profit if you are willing to be patient with financial investments and invest for the long term. Take the opportunity to make changes in your home environment and in‐ vest some money in family endeavors. A new management team may be coming in, so be cautious and let them direct you. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — It's time to restructure your life and decide about a love relationship. Keep your mind clear and live your life for yourself, not for others. This is an excellent time to go on interviews and show others you mean business. Enthusi‐ asm can make all the difference in getting what you want. Leo (July 23 – August 23) — Working under pressure is your forte, and focusing on being more creative in all areas of your life can help you succeed in your career and love life. Follow your intuition and act upon it, but remember that a relationship must end, most likely a friendship. Try to laugh more, worry less, and approach family mat‐ ters carefully. Virgo (August 24 – September 22) — A break from the norm may surprise your su‐ pervisors, but they will quickly see that your way works. Timing can be crucial in making relationships work, so be aware. Remember that talking is no substitute for doing; a crit‐ ical decision requires undivided attention. Libra (September 23 – October 22) — Shared passion with your lover can strengthen your long‐term relationship. Still, it's important not to let trivial matters consume too much time and potentially damage the relationship. A new social circle can bring you into its fold and offer valuable professional insights. Your boss will appre‐ ciate your team‐building skills and pay at‐ tention to you more.

Also in early October, the annual Tyler Valcich Memorial Car Show sup‐ porting the Tyler Project was on full dis‐ play at the Amagansett Fire Department. This is the tenth year of the show, organ‐ ized by Montauk Fire Department Ex‐ Chief Mickey Valcich and his wife Valinda in memory of their son Tyler. As always the show was a success. Photos accom‐ pany here. On Sunday, October 8th, the Montauk Fire Department, in conjunction with the Mon‐ tauk Point Lions Club, hosted a pancake breakfast. This breakfast has been an annual event for many years. Proceeds from the fundraiser support the upcoming Senior Citizens Holi‐ day Dinner in early December. I want to thank all the Members of the Department who as‐ sisted, especially chairman Tom Dess, and thank you to the Montauk Point Lions, with whom we’ve worked side by side to make our holiday dinner such a successful and well attended event. Lastly, I want to thank and congratulate fire policeman Jon Forsberg for his continuing efforts in coordinating our annual Blood Drive. Jon has reported to the Department that Members of the Department and the community at large showed up in great numbers on September 19th and set a record for blood given. This is so very important, and Jon has been spearheading this event for many years. Thanks Jon, job well done. That’s it for this month’s article. I hope everyone has a safe and fun Thanksgiving with family and friends. ~ Ken Glogg, Chief, Montauk Fire Department www.montaukfiredistrict.org

DOCUMENTARIES... Continued from Page 7

Director/Screenwriter Liz Garbus had access to Marilyn’s never before seen personal corre‐ spondence, diary entries and archival footage and put together this extremely personal glimpse of the sexy star’s tumultuous life. Starting from her Norma Jeane childhood, in and out of foster homes when her mother was confined to a mental institution, the film leads viewers through Marilyn’s modeling days to her rise to stardom. Love, Marilyn featured current film stars reading excerpts of her intimate diaries with feeling, emotion and loneliness Marilyn endured. Viewers will have mixed reactions on whether her early demise could have been avoided, but it is more understandable on why it did. 2012: Koch ‐ No explanation is needed when defining the subject of this film, his Honor, the former Mayor of New York City, Edward Koch. He was in charge of NYC from 1978 to 1989 and at the time the film was released he was 86 and still as feisty and enter‐ taining in his film answers as he was on interviews during the time of his tenure. Al‐ though “intensely private” Ed Koch is “combative, funny and blunt” in this documentary that depicts the major incidents during his time in office. Growing up in the Bronx, I re‐ member quite well the many controversies that occurred when he was Mayor. This film

Koch, gave an honest portrait of the man, what he endured and how he took on his critics and allies alike. Ed Koch may have passed on, but his legacy lives forever as part of New York history. 2013: Marvin Hamlisch ‐ What He Did for Love – The notices for this documentary de‐ scribed him as a “Composer, conductor, genius, mensch, Marvin Hamlisch was as close to a modern day DaVinci as it gets. Hit after hit...'The Way We Were', 'Nobody Does It Better', 'The Sting', 'Chorus Line', Marvin was irrepressible and prolific. His streak was staggering. So what made a genius like that tick? What was his creative process? What struggles, inner turmoil, and breakthroughs did Marvin endure to realize his triumphs?” The film used Marvin’s personal archives and interviews and comments from his classmates, contempo‐ raries, and colleagues to capture the essence, personality of this musical genius. This story about this extraordinary man was also featured on American Masters series. 2015: Sherpa – This documentary was my husband’s favorite. If you have never heard of or wondered what the Sherpa population goes through as guides on Mt. Everest, this film gives a harrowing, insiders peek. Watching this film and the scary climbing involved assured me, this challenge will never be on my bucket list! Because of a 14,000‐ton block of ice that barreled down the mountain in April 2014, 16 Sherpa guides were killed. In this worst tragedy on the mountain, the other Sherpa guides united to fight for respect and better working conditions as their share of profits are not proportional to the risk and work they do. The story shows the tourist adventures, some paying as much as $75,000 a person for the two‐month climb and what dangers await both climbers and guides. Director/Screenwriter, Jennifer Peedom captures the intenseness of the climb, the tedious and precarious routes the Sherpa guides make to carry equipment, food and supplies for the tourists for the trip’s duration. Photography is breathtaking as is the footage of the dangers on the mountain. Viewers are drawn into the Sherpa life as the film shows the tiny village and those left behind as the men leave to earn enough to get the family through until the next tourists arrive on Everest. This film we caught again on the History Channel. 2017: Itzhak ‐ Each year an Opening Night Film is se‐ lected to kick off the festival. In 2017 it was a fabulous film, Itzhak, a documentary about famed violinist, Itzhak Perlman. The life story of this “greatest living violinists” capture the audience from the start and high praise is certainly deserved for Director/Producer Alison Cher‐ nick for this accomplishment. The story is told with vin‐ tage photographs, film clips and current interviews of Mr. Perlman and his wife, Toby, in their New York City aptartment. She is also an accomplished violinist and they met when both attended violin camp as teens one summer. Throughout the film viewers saw and heard the fantastic personality of Itzhak Perlman shine through despite the hardship of his early life and illness. 2018: A Private War ‐ We saw A Private War, starring Rosamund Pike, portraying a real life war correspondent, photojournalist Marie Colvin. This film showed what it’s like being in a war torn area and the dangers journalists put themselves through to bring a story to the world, “giving a voice to the voiceless”. Watching how these journalists live, the harrowing, on the edge of life and death scenarios they go through is unbelievable and at times hard to watch. When viewing nightly TV news, it’s difficult to imagine the environment a reporter faces being in a dangerous conflict zone to capture a story. There are too many excellent documentaries to possibly cover, so readers should seek out some they come across even if there is only a mild interest in the subject matter. It is amazing how a good story teller and fantastic photography can open up a new world of intellectual discoveries. There is a perfect quote by a famous documentary film maker, Albert Maysles that says it all. “Documentaries are not diversion but engagement. We’re not trying to move you away from life, but closer to it.” If you recognize his name you might know it from the 2006 documentary he made with his brother about Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis relatives, cousins of hers. The documentary was, The Beales of Grey Garden, which was about the eccentric Edith, “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale and her mother Edith Bouvier Beale and was directed by Albert and David Maysles, who also appeared in the film. This truly riveting film followed the mother/daughter pair as they lived in their run down, decrepit house, Grey Gardens located in the upscale town of East Hampton, New York. The Montauk Sun thanks FrankPR owners Clare Anne Darragh and Lina Plath and their team for their help, assistance and infor‐ mation throughout the eight days of the 2023 HIFF. With hundreds of films, shorts, discus‐ sions and events in the Festival and scores of press representatives attending, their task of supplying updates and schedules was vital in keeping information current for journalists and reporters. Their tireless efforts and friendliness was truly appreciated!

NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel During elementary school grades the study of Native American Tribes often becomes more prevalent preceding our Thanksgiving celebration. Most people do not realize there are over 560 Native American tribes, with the Navajo, Cherokee and Sioux being the largest. My grade school lessons covered several of the largest tribes and so did my children’s grade school lessons. One teacher of our daughter had an intensive study about the Hopi tribe and included an activity that was creating a copy of a kachina doll, known for being “an im‐ mortal being that brought rain and other aspects of the natural world and society.” Our daughter was so proud of her artistic duplication of the teacher’s model she displayed it in her room well into her high school years. During several vacation visits we took to a friend in Arizona, much of the sightseeing trips centered on the vast culture of Native American tribes and of course the beauty of desert landscapes. We traveled around Flagstaff, Se‐ dona and went as far as the Grand Canyon on a weekend excursion. Our visit included walking the trail where the Sinagua cliff dwellers lived and the Red Rock area where the Hopi tribes inhabited. The word Sinagua meant “without water” as they lived on high cliffs and had to walk down a long distance to the river below for their daily water supply. Arizona is rich in culture and has a long list of tribes that populated the region over the cen‐ turies, with the Navajo Nation now the largest reservation in the U.S. We have many words in our English language that originated from Native Americans. For instance one of our autumn foods, squash, comes from the Narragansett people of Rhode Island that called it “askutasquash”. It is surmised was then shortened by the pilgrims to just “squash.” Then there are pecans, often used in stuffing or pies and that words derived from the Algonquian language pronounced “pakani” or “pakan” and again English converted it to pecan. Besides food words, some clothing or other artifacts found their way into English and are easily recognized today. Take the word moccasin, the fur lined footwear we all know. Several tribes had variations for the word, with the Powhatan calling it “makasin,” close to what it sounds like today. The fun water activity where many people enjoy riding a kayak was originally a working craft used by the Inuit people of Alaska and Canada for hunting. With the Inuit spelling it their way, it is written as “gajag,” but we say kayak, close to how they pro‐ nounced it phonetically. Along the way, even some geographical locations and states derived their names from Native American tribes that lived there. For instance, the Mississippi River that flows through ten states from the Northern U.S. down to Louisiana got its name from the Ojibwa people. They lived in Minnesota, where the river began, and in their language called it “misiziibi” meaning it was a “great river.” They were a branch of the Algonquian group of languages and the name stayed the same, except for English spelling now. There is so much more to learn about the heritage of the Native American tribes of our country and the vast contribution they’ve given to our current day culture.

Hamptons Film Festival... Continued from Page 25 and Environmental Issues. Famous director David Allen, of London, known for his National Geographic documentaries, showed his movie called “Wilding,” about a couple in England who bet on nature for the fu‐ ture of their failing, 400 year old estate. Their land was in poor shape, so they tried an experiment to bring it back by introducing animals both tame and wild, and letting nature take its course. In a similar vein, the movie “Common Ground” looks at agricultural solutions to climate change, by following farmers using alternative regenerative ways to bal‐ ance the climate, save our health, and stabilize America’s economy, before it’s too late. Instead of tilling the soil, and using pesticides which only harm the crops and soil, they use alternative farming practices which are more natural and help to bring it back to health. This film was directed by Josh and Rebecca Tickell. It also featured Laura Dern and Woody Harrel‐ son. Following this film, there was a discussion with local model and en‐ vironmentalist, Christie Brinkley, and the movie crew, about the need to bring these practices to the East End. In the environmental category, was an important and eye‐opening documentary feature called “Silent Fallout: Baby Teeth Speak.” It was about how radioactive material can show up in the baby teeth of children, from the nuclear arms testing conducted on U.S. soil. Director/Screen‐ writer and Producer Hideaki Ito showed how in 2001, 85,000 baby teeth were discovered in Missouri, collected 50 years earlier in a study of ra‐ dioactive consequences of nuclear testing on U.S. soil. This film was nar‐ rated by Alec Baldwin, HFF Chair Emeriti, who was later on a panel discussion along with local environmental journalist and author Karl Grossman. Kudos to this year’s people behind the 31st annual Hamptons Inter‐ national Film Festival, including Randy Mastro, Chairman of the Board, Anne Chaisson, Executive Director, and David Nugent, Artistic Director, for bringing exraordinary films, panel discussions, and events to East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and Southampton theaters and villages. We look forward to next year’s festival!

“The Light of Man”... Continued from Page 37 This 67‐minute documentary has won Film Festivals in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, London, Paris, Rome, Delhi India and Cannes, France. The New York Film Awards called it: “Powerful. ‘The Light of Man’ is a love letter to the world, which promotes original thinking about the power of connection between human beings.” Atom Terpening, Transformational Pro‐ gram Development Lead, Conscious Content Program Coordinator and Facilitator for Hu‐ manityStream, which recently purchased dis‐ tribution rights for its streaming platform stated; "Kevin L. McCrudden has taken a per‑ sonal vision and inspiration and manifested a re‑ markable film about the radiance of the human spirit. His beautifully produced short film is transformational as well as elegant. His work is rich in spiritual, philosophical and scientific truths. Watching this film is a moving and reso‑ nant experience filled with 'aha' moments. It is like engaging in one of the most insightful con‑ versations of your life!" “I cannot tell you how thrilled and honored I am to have “The Light of Man” on HumanityS‐ tream.com, which was founded and created by one of the world’s leaders in spirituality, one‐ ness, mindfulness and universal consciousness, Neale Donald Walsch. HumanityStream is home to some of the biggest names in the world in the spiritual, consciousness and one‐ ness space, on top of the extraordinary leaders that I have in the documentary:

Dr. John Hagelin: a world‐renowned physi‐ cist who is also President of Maharishi Interna‐ tional University and the head of TM – Transcendental Meditation in North America, and is President of Scientists for Peace Dr. Raymond Moody: who is known as the preeminent leader of the NDE – Near Death Ex‐ perience movement and has interviewed thou‐ sands of people that have had NDEs, as well as being a MD – Medical Doctor, Psychologist and Philosopher: and Reverend Dr. B. L. Hofer: who is a Theolo‐ gian, Reverend, Psychologist and Neuroscien‐ tist. In addition, I was given permission to use footage from His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi! Since the beginning of this project, I have had the pleasure and honor of meeting some of the brightest people on the planet, which have helped me develop the story behind “The Light of Man” and the actual origins of “God” or what‐ ever name people use around the world to de‐ scribe the “Higher Power.” McCrudden concluded. McCrudden says that he has signed distri‐ bution deals with HumanityStream here in America and Polyband Mind & Spirit in Ger‐ many. He is still awaiting a deal with a major studio or global distribution deal with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Paramount or other major dis‐ tribution partner, and will likely announce the release of the documentary on his YouTube Channel soon.
