FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP

Inshore or Offshore, whatever you chose to do this season, absolutely didn't disappoint! Milder winters makes for warmer water temperatures, thus providing better conditions for numerous different species of bait ish to lourish. Huge numbers of Bunker, Mackerel (both the Boston & Chub), Sand Eels, squid, all were available for the pelagics to feed on! Fluke and Black Sea Bass were coming up stuffed with sand eels. School Blue in tuna were gorging themselves on the tinker mackerel and mackerel fry, along with sand eels, that were offshore.

School Blue in Tuna were found from 12 miles out to 25 miles in great

numbers. Along with them were Humpback, Finback, Minke whales, and Porpoise, all feeding on the smorgasbord of feed. It was great action for anglers and great action just watching the sea mammals feeding.

Back inshore the Fluke ishing seemed to improve from the previous seasons, but the sheer number of Black Sea Bass created quite a nuisance when targeting the Flatties! There was Fluke on just about all the spots, plenty of shorts to be had, but weeding through the Sea bass took away from the Fluke bite and used up a lot of bait and time. Best chance was to get on the edge of the rock piles, to try and avoid the Sea Bass by working the surrounding sandy and gravel areas. Now of course the bait ish had to be in the area as well along with the wind and tide cooperating to make the proper presentation. It was de initely challenging at times!

The Striped Bass were scarce for almost 2 months, and that was more like it used to be in the 70's & 80's. Water temperature heats up, and on to Massachusetts & Maine they went. Now that the water is cooling off, they are on the move. This season they've been coming in spurts instead of a full blitz. Some have even been seen by drone footage by the thousands heading west

in the Great South Bay! Along our south side the Surfcasters are getting great action one day, then the very next day they're playing hard to get! I'm sure the numerous sharks, that are competing for the Bunker & Mackerel, are not helping.

Offshore out in the Canyons have slowed down after the big Nor'easter. Black ish season opened up October 15th and it's red hot!!

You're allowed 4 ish per angler @ 16 inches.

You get a nice day with the right tide, you'll be catching!!

Still got plenty of time still, so get out there and have some fun catching supper!!!

Dear EarthTalk: How do 3D printed houses stack up against conventional ones with regard to sustainability, both during construction and then in use?

~J. Homes, via email

3D printed homes are fast gaining traction as a sustainable alternative to traditional building. Proponents say they use less material, create less waste, and hold promise for ef icient long term per formance. The question is whether all this adds up in real life when compared to conventionally built houses.

3D printing offers several clear ad

vantages. The additive process builds walls layer by layer using only what’s needed, drastically reducing waste. Ac cording to Bay Management Group, 3D methods can cut process waste and over engineering signi icantly, creating a shorter supply chain and a more eco friendly outcome. Unlike conventional framing which discards off cuts and ex cess materials, printed homes use nearly all the feedstock. Realistically that can re duce overall material consumption by up to 90 percent.

And there’s speed. A community of 100 3D printed homes built in Wolf

Surfing Montauk with Debra Rose

Surf Safety Day

The East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue and the Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island Chapter hosted Surf Safety Day at Marram Hotel in Montauk on a sunny Sunday in October. The day was a refresher as well as presentation of new in formation about ocean and surf awareness to keep everyone safe in the water.

Local surfers, beach goers and swimmers were welcomed to join and learn more about the challenges of playing in the ocean. By creating and maintaining awareness, the community is stronger and more successful to keep one another safe. Recognizing and understanding rip currents, prac ticing rescue techniques and using accessible equipment for rescues were imperative pieces of information that could save and have saved lives on the beach and in the ocean.

T.J. Calabrese and Bob Miller led lessons on CPR, water rescue techniques and reviewed skills for the attendees new to the water as well as sea soned surfers in the already close surf community for an afternoon of in formation and practice. As a local community and ambassadors to our beaches, there was an emphasis on the shared responsibility to educate and help others enjoying the east end. And most of all to keep everyone safe. Happy sur ing!

Montauk Fire Department Corner

Welcome to this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope everyone is having a great fall season. The weather has been exceptional, and it’s a nice time to be in Montauk.

I am happy to report that this year’s blood drive, hosted by the Montauk Fire De partment in conjunction with the American Red Cross, was a great success. On Tuesday, September 23rd from noon to 6:00 p.m., there were over 110 pints of blood donated to our local blood bank. This is a record for us and goes a long way towards keeping our blood supplies up in case of an emergency. I am very proud that many of the folks do nating blood were Members of the Montauk Fire Department. I would like to thank Fire man Jon Forsberg who has been our chairman of the blood drive for many, many years. Through his efforts this important event is always successful. A big thanks to Sam Joyce, Jr. and his crew for providing delicious meals to all donors.

You may remember that in July the annual Montauk ireworks were can celled when piping plovers were found nesting too close to the area where the ireworks were to be shot off. The rescheduled ireworks were on full dis play on Saturday, October 11th to coincide with the Montauk Fall Festival. As always, the Montauk Fire Department had a contingent of ire trucks, ambu lances, and our Company No. 6 Fire Police on hand to assist with this event.

On Sunday, October 12th the Montauk Fire Department and the Montauk Point Lions Club held our annual pancake breakfast at the irehouse. This is a great event that is always well attended. Our pancake breakfast is not only a nice time for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a hearty helping of pancakes, but it is also a fundraiser to help defray the costs of the annual Senior Citizens Holiday Dinner that is held at the irehouse in early December. Thank you to Fire ighter Tom Dess who re turned from his new home in North Carolina to chair this event. On the same day, the De partment hosted an open house for all those who wanted to attend. It just happened to be on the same day as our recent Nor’ester that blew through Montauk on October 12th and 13th, but that didn’t deter some great kids from Montauk from eating pancakes and check ing out the ire trucks.

On October 19th, MFD Ex Chief Mickey Valcich and his Family honored their late son Tyler with their annual Tyler Valcich Memorial Classic Car Show on the Amagansett Fire House grounds. Hundreds of cherished vehicles and their proud owners were on display for visitors to enjoy. Entry fees bene ited their Tyler Project Foundation (tylerproject.org), that provides sui cide education.

That’s it for this month’s Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope everyone has a safe and fun Hallo ween. We’ll be back next month with more info re garding the Montauk Fire Department.

Monte’s at the Manor... a traditional family Italian restaurant for all seasons

Elegantly perched atop one of the highest points in Montauk overlooking Fort Pond Bay, the Montauk Manor is home to of the Monte family’s most recent venture. Found within the walls of this historical Tudor Revival style building, just off the vast vaulted lobby with exposed beams and archways adorned with vintage accents and a cozy, classy feel all contributing to its historic atmosphere, is Monte’s Restaurant. Setting a warm, welcoming scene prior to entering the dining room, the large stone looring of the lobby is adorned by Monte’s ‘sidewalk’ café with tables, a cozy corner bench nook, and a quaint bar all overlooking the huge blazing ireplace. Simultaneously, the kitchen aromas awaken your senses with the preparation of recipes passed down through generations, building anticipation of the menu which encompasses a delicious array of ish, pasta, meats, salads and vegetables professionally prepared in the Italian tradition by Chef Andrew.

After being welcomed at the door by Velaine, we were escorted to our seats in the warm dining room. Creating a cozy familiar ambiance with low lighting and pictures adorning the walls with scenes encom passing the generations of the Monte family, old Brooklyn neighborhood scenes, and a few from way back in Italy; one gets the feeling of sitting in the old Monte’s Restaurant on President St. in Brooklyn. With a lovely greeting by our waitress Rachel, we opted to have Chef Andrew treat us to ‘chef choice’ options for our visit. While enjoying the ambiance, John from behind the lobby bar prepared our tasty cocktails of choice: a Dirty Martini, a gin Negroni and a Monte’s specialty Martini Limon prepared with limoncello.

Our irst course included Monte’s Tri Color Caesar and the Burrata. The fresh Caesar salad is a blend of Romain and radic chio tossed in a classic Caesar dressing with a hint of lemon, and inished with added texture from crunchy croutons and a tasty parmigiana crisp. The softa and creamy Burrata sit ting atop lavorful slow roasted tomato con it is garnished with basil pesto and a balsamic drizzle creating a fresh, clean, light appetizer reminiscent of summer garden delights.

To start our second course, from the Family Favorites sec tion of the menu, we were treated to Grandma’s Meatballs, and what a treat they are. These moist, light, and lavorful meatballs are beautifully arranged on a hot mini skil let with Monte’s tomato sauce, a dollop of whipped ricotta and fresh basil.

Rounding off this indulging course, Chef sent an aromatic plate of Baked Oyster and Clams Oreganata, as well as the Calamari Fritti. The Clams are dressed with a light topping

For years, Artist Suse Lowenstein has opened her lovely secluded home and sculpture garden each day, right here in Montauk, for visitors to experience her very personal work of art DARK ELEGY. Inspired by the loss of her eldest son, Alexander, in the tragedy of Pan Am light 103, from London to NY that went down over Lockerbie, Scotland in an act of terrorism, killing 270 people; this exhibit is a memorial to all those who have lost their lives to terrorism.

(This gorgeous building reminds one of a crystal palace) Visitors can get up close to see these miniature masterpieces, each one meticulously crafted from plant parts such as palm fronds, pinecones, and cinna mon sticks, fusing horticulture with design throughout the exhibition. While walking and viewing the creative buildings and architectural likeness, closer looks to see the composition of the buildings is a must. Outside guests can explore a glowing mountain scape brimming with even more trains and picture perfect moments. Journey through the exhibition with friends and loved ones after dark and see the show in a charming new light on select evenings during Holiday Train Nights. This Train Show is renowned for its vignettes of G scale model trains enlivening botanical replicas of famous New York landmarks in miniature, though some are no longer standing, like the irst Yankee Stadium or the original Penn Station. Each one is delightfully re created from natural materials such as leaves, seeds, twigs, bark, and acorns by the creative team at Applied Imagination in Alexandria, Kentucky. American steam engines, streetcars from the late 1800s, and modern freight and passenger trains travel indoors in the Conservatory’s galleries along overhead trestles, through tunnels, across soaring structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, and in an enchanting woodland outdoor display over towering moun tains with forest animals, winter interest plants, and fungi on the Conservatory Lawn, providing merriment for young and old alike.

New this year is the Delacorte Theater, a new miniature masterpiece joining this year’s Holiday Train Show lineup. It is a botanical replica of the recently reopened and renovated Delacorte Theater, longtime home to The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park. It appears alongside a Central Park tableau that includes the Gothic Arch, Bel vedere Castle, the Music Pavilion, the Angel of the Waters Bethesda Fountain, the Dairy, and Cop Cot. The model was constructed using bark from a variety of trees including

Life, Love & Golf in the West Virginia Mountains

Glade Springs, West Virginia — A Place That Became Part of My Heart

This isn’t the kind of travel feature my readers might expect from Escape from Paradise It’s not about a new resort, a cruise, or an assignment on the road, but about a place that quietly became part of our lives. Between our mountain seasons in Glade Springs and win ters by the sea, this community has given us something lasting — peace, purpose, and be longing.

Since the beautiful Glade Springs Resort in West Virginia — where Marcus and I have spent part of our summers for more than a decade — has recently been listed for sale, I felt compelled to feature it, to honor the place that has touched our hearts so deeply.

On a summer morning in Glade Springs, you’ll often ind me lac ing up my hiking shoes and heading into the woods. I rarely go without my camera — or rather, my phone — pausing to capture wild lowers, mist rising over the Stonehaven fairways, or a deer by the lake. These snapshots have become part of my Glade Smiles photo diary on Nextdoor — a little love letter to the mountain and its people.

Meanwhile, Marcus is on the golf course, living his best game on the Stonehaven greens. A later in life player, he loves both the challenge and camaraderie of it. He plays; I wander. Then I hike up to Small Talk Café for my half cof fee, half hot water creation and a chat with friends beneath the umbrellas outside.

Our lives low between two worlds — the stillness of Glade Springs and the coastal rhythm of Palm Coast, Florida. Down south, palms sway outside our windows, and the ocean is never far away. From Jacksonville or Port Canaveral, cruise ships beckon us toward new horizons. Cruising has become one of our joys — part adventure, part re lection, and part celebration of life’s second act.

Both Marcus and I have known loss. Each of us was married for decades until cancer changed everything. Many Montaukers will remember my late husband, Sunny Lemme, a devoted member of the Montauk Fire Depart ment. His memory will forever remain part of my beloved seaside community.

For a long time, the thought of inding love again seemed unimaginable. Yet fate inter vened — gently, persistently — through the quiet connection of an online exchange. What began as cautious correspondence grew into something extraordinary. Three months later, we tested our bond by traveling together — irst to Puerto Vallarta, then to Costa Rica. We explored, cooked, laughed, and learned each other’s rhythms. That trip became the founda tion of everything that followed. By God’s grace, we’ll celebrate ten years of marriage next March — a milestone both miraculous and natural.

Born in Germany, my own “American Dream” found its home in Montauk, New York, where I built a career in hospitality and media. For 17 years, I hosted The American Dream Show, interviewing more than 500 guests, and for two decades I served as Marketing and PR Director for one of Montauk’s most beloved resorts, then known as Gurney’s Inn Resort & Sea Water Spa. The Montauk Sun — now celebrating its 25th year — has long been my publishing home.

ANGELO MONTE... THE MAKINGOFA D-DAY HERO

Picture this: it’s one week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and many of your friends and family are heading down to the various recruitment of ices around Brooklyn, your hometown. You too feel it’s your duty to follow the call to serve your country, and you ind out that the closest local military recruitment of ice in your neighborhood is for the U.S. Marine Corps. “What the heck,” you say, and wander in to sign up like any young twentysomething man would do in times like this.

This was the destiny of my wise ass, 22 year old fu ture father in law, Angelo Montemarano, a gifted neighbor hood Italian Stallion prize ighter, who once told me that he had two ights daily: one on his way to school through the Irish neighborhood, and one on the return home.

Angelo was the ifth of seven boys, born to Angelo and Filomena Montemarano of Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. All of the children were born in the family apartment building, above the family owned restaurant called Monte’s Venetian Room.

Filomena was brought to this country from Avellino, Italy, as a bride for Angelo Sr., who had already been in this country since childhood. To make ends meet, and before they were able to save enough to buy the apartment building, they opened a small sidewalk eatery, serving basic Ital ian eats to the local longshoremen wan dering around from the dock area near the Gowanus Canal. Soon, word got out about Filomena’s tomato sauce, which was, by most standards, simply outstanding—so, as the children got older, Angelo Sr. opened Monte’s Venetian Room Restaurant and put all the children to work together as a family affair.

As luck would have it, my future father in law, Angelo Jr., was a tough, solidly built, energetic young man with a broken nose, the remnant of his prize ighting days, and his solid arms—the left one he called “the hospi tal” and the right one “the cemetery”—were legendary!

So, he made it through U.S. Marine basic training with lying colors, until the inal physical exam, where the doctors told him he had lat feet and had to be discharged. Not to be outdone, he simply waited a few days and went down to the U.S. Army recruitment of ice, and signed up without a hitch. Any other basic training after the one he passed while in the Marines was a breeze for him, and he entered service as a PFC.

While Angelo Jr. was waiting to be deployed some where in the Paci ic, as he expected, war in Europe was heating up rapidly, and the Nazis were conquering most of Europe in search of “Lebensraum,” or loosely, “Habitat.” Soon enough, Angelo was deployed to a staging area located in the British Isles in preparation for the invasion of Europe. That much was known to just about everyone, but through an elaborate series of deceptions, and the breaking of the super secre tive German Enigma Code by the famous ladies of Blet chley Park in England, the actual invasion location and date remained obscured to the leadership of the Ger man Wehrmacht. And Herr

Hitler, Der Führer himself, took over direct con trol of the German armed forces under his com mand, which turned out to be a huge unforced error.

The inal preparations were made, and the night of June 5, 1944, was chosen as D Day for the invasion, and Normandy would be the destination. But a huge storm was brewing, and the U.S. Military leadership postponed the invasion by one day to begin on June 6, 1944.

All the soldiers were loaded into transport vessels for the early morning crossing, which turned out to be almost as rough as the night before. Angelo was assigned to a Hig gins Boat Landing Craft vehicle where he and his buddies, about 36 men, were crammed in with all their gear. The voyage was no all inclusive luxury cruise, but rather “hell in a shell,” as some have described it. The English Channel can get as rough as the Atlantic Ocean at times, and this night was no exception. Soldiers were throwing up, and the rough seas made sleeping virtually impossible. After what seemed like an eternity crossing the channel, a dark horizon came into view through the backlit ex plosions from ord nance dropped by the Allies on the enemy gun emplacements. Al though the Germans were taken totally by surprise, they rallied, and gun ire started to pepper the seas sur rounding the Hig gins Boats as they approached the shoreline. They were to disembark on Omaha Beach, Dog Red sector, in the irst wave of

The 33rd Annual Hamptons Inter national Film Festival was bigger and better than ever, with eleven days of world class ilms across the East End, in theaters in East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and the new Southampton IMAX Theater. Films were also shown in Guild Hall and East Hampton Middle School. From Oc tober 3 to 13, the streets of the East End were illed with eager theater goers, major celebrities, local ilmmakers, di rectors, and others coming from around the world.

What’s exciting about this fall festi val is that people out here get to be the irst to see many movies that go on to win Oscar awards, and meet famous stars such as Ethan Hawke, with his new movie “Blue Moon,” and Elizabeth Olsen, with her new ilm, “Eternity.” Both did the “Conversation With,” where they ap peared on stage to be interviewed about their movies and careers. Other highlights this year were actress Sidney Sweeney’s per formance in the Centerpiece Film “Christy,” and UBS Breakthrough Performer “Tona tiuh’s performance in “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” And lines were around the block for Jodie Foster’s appear ance at her new movie, “A Private Life.”

What is really fascinating about this festival is the amount of short, and feature length ilms from all dif ferent venues, from World Cinema, to Films of Con lict and Resolution, to Films of Air, Land and Sea, Views From Long Island, Animal Rights, Spotlight Films, and Documentaries. Thanks to HIFF’s David Nugent for se lecting all these ilms, and to HIFF Board Co Chairs Randy Mastro and Alec Baldwin. Also to board

member Regina K. Scully and her Arte mis Rising Foundation for returning as the Presenting Sponsor.

It’s also so exciting to see ilms made right here on Long Island. One of them this year, “On the End,” was about Montauk. Director and screenwriter Ari Selinger, of Brooklyn and Sag Har bor, did a very entertaining ilm based on a true story of a down on his luck mechanic living on Navy Road. For years, the Town of East Hampton had been trying to get him to clean up his property, strewn with cars, garbage, and tried to evict him claiming it was an environmental hazard. But he claimed his prop erty was grandfathered in, and re fused to leave. The case went to court, and eventually he won, with the help of his girlfriend Cathy Ann Tobin, or “Freckles” and attorney friend. This ilm is also a wonderful love story of Tom Ferrreira, the main character, and Freckles, who meet under extraordinary circum stances, as both are down and out, in bad health and suffering. This movie also shows the rural beauty of Navy Road in Montauk, along the bay, and how Hamptons realtors are trying to get them to move out and sell their beachfront “shacks” for millions.

Hundreds of Montaukers and other locals packed the East Hampton and Sag Harbor the aters to see “On the End” for two nights. Sel inger and his cast members later greeted the crowds. He has so far taken this ilm to festi vals in Woodstock, Newport Beach, California and others.

Another important ilm in this festival was

“Trade Secret,” an expose that ex amines how we protect threat ened species on a global level.

Filmed over six years across nine countries, it follows the investiga tion into the black market fur trade and inds out that certain companies claiming to protect en dangered wildlife, like polar bears, are also involved in the hunting of them.

‘Polar bears are one of the most beloved animals in the world, but they’re not protected,” said Joffe, who grew up in Aus tralia and now lives in England.

“For over 100 years they’ve been shot by trophy hunters. Because of this, 70% of the world’s wildlife has disappeared. We need to end international commercial trade.”

The cinematic photography in this ilm is amazing, showing wildlife around the world, and especially in the harsh areas of Alaska, where the thinning ice caps have al ready caused a huge problem for the polar bears, trying desperately to survive. “All species are important, but if we can’t protect the polar bears, how can we protect the smaller animals?” said Joffe, who has been a wildlife photographer for 20 years, and also worked on “Our Oceans,” narrated by former President Barack Obama.

Showing the great diversity of ilms in the Hamptons In ternational Film Festival, another popular and fun movie was “Newport and the Great Folk Dream,” about the famous New port Folk Festival, how it started and how it grew. This was the North American Premiere, in the Documentary Feature category. It was done by local Hamptons musician Joe Lauro and also Robert Gordon. It shows the time from 1963 to 1966, with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, Howlin’ Wolf, and other great folkies. This heartfelt ilm shows rare and previously unseen archival footage and was illed with protest spirit.

Get your tickets early for the 34th annual Hamptons Film fest next October and get a great education from the many world wide movies you can see right here on the East End! https://hamptons ilmfest.org/

September is our healthiest time of year. Not a sur prise as we emerge from summer (hopefully) rested from days of extra sunshine, water time and maybe a break from the regular routine. Fall represents re newal; a new school year, the weather changing, a snap into the holiday season. As we race to the end of the cal endar year our health and wellness may take a hit, and by January we are not at our best. We may be more stressed, tired, depressed and depleted. Familiar with this cycle, we can fall into it anyway without some preparation. With a little more attention and awareness there are ways to stave off the madness associated with the end of the fall and start of winter.

Oh, the Joy

With an increased layer of expectations, deadlines and energy output, holiday time means conducting your regular life while hosting, shopping, partying, planning, traveling and adjusting to the change in weather. No wonder we are overwhelmed. Our sleep may be dis

If you are the planner, streamline what you can and save the elaborate execution for a less dynamic time of year when time is on your side. Your guests will thank you and you may ind more enjoyment than stress out of bringing people together.

Build in time to rest, recharge, sleep and exercise, the usual activities that are cut irst when trying to meet everyone’s expectations. Set your own boundaries and try to stick with friends and family that are good at doing the same. There is an unrealistic and unspoken pressure to see everyone and do everything in the weeks around the holidays. Film Stars & Memorable Roles

With the recent passing of two iconic ilm actors, Robert Redford and Diane Keaton, we may think about the roles they played and how perfect they were for their parts. Winning nominations and awards proved that both critics and au diences agreed about their noteworthy performances.

As a long time movie buff, there are many iconic movies that are memorable and enjoyable all over again no matter how many times I watch them. If cruising channels looking for something to watch, there are some movies I immediately stop and watch the ilm, no matter what part it is up to at the moment. Off the top of my head, Dr. Zhivago, Gone with the Wind, My Cousin Vinny, Rain Man, The Way We Were, Saturday Night Fever and Singing in the Rain, to name a few that grab my attention when they come on the screen. While

there are scores of actors that had long and illustrious careers and won Oscars or been nominated, often there is one role they are forever associated with when you hear their name that ilm comes quickly to mind. Even if the ilm was early in their ca reer, the role they played has been etched into viewer’s memory. See if you can name the staring actor by the ilm he or she is associated with for an outstanding role.

Ranch, Texas was completed in just four to six weeks per home: a fraction of the six to eight months typical for wood frame builds. That means fewer machine hours, fewer diesel trucks hauling materials, and less energy burned on site. In Melbourne, Australia, company Luyten recently built a 3D printed house in just three weeks total.

Sustainability claims also hinge on materials used. Some 3D homes use advanced concrete mixes like Lava crete, which provide strength and reduce carbon emis sions. Others experiment with bio based feeds like wood waste with corn resin. Habib Dagher of the Advanced Struc tures and Composites Center described one model called BioHome3D as “100 percent renewable, because it is really bio based.” The pellets used in printing can be recycled and reused multiple times while retaining material properties. Also, many 3D printed homes deliver superior thermal mass thanks to concrete walls, which improve insulation and re duce heating and cooling needs. Companies like Mighty Buildings now integrate ultra low GWP (global warming po tential) insulation to further reduce carbon footprint during operation.

There are challenges. Printing still relies heavily on concrete, which has high embodied carbon unless offset or replaced with greener materials. Many inished homes still need traditional tradespeople to install plumbing, wiring, windows and interior inishes. Zoning codes and building rules also limit adoption in many markets. But once inte grated with renewable energy and better materials, these homes could match or exceed conventional sustainability standards in both construction and ongoing use.

Dear EarthTalk: Why do eco advocates consider backyard gardens so crucial to conservation?

Butte, MT

Backyard gardens might seem like just a hobby or a way to make a home look nice, but they actually play a much bigger role in conservation. As cities expand and natural habitats shrink, small green spaces like home gardens can provide essential food and shelter for wildlife. This idea falls under garden ecology. This is a ield that looks at how gar dens function as ecosystems. Homeowners can make a real difference in supporting biodiversity by choosing the right

plants and maintaining these spaces with care.

Backyard gardens help is by supporting pollinators like bees, butter lies and birds, all which rely on plants for food. In return, they help plants reproduce. “Urban gardens can act as mini refuges for pollinators, especially in places where natural habitat is disappearing,” says Dr. Susannah Lerman, research ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service. First of all, without enough green spaces, pollinator populations decline. This then affects everything from wild plant growth to food production. Gardens also create small patches of habitat that connect larger green spaces. This makes it eas ier for wildlife to move around safely.

Not all plants offer the same bene its. Native plants that naturally grow in a speci ic area are the best choice for con servation gardening. They require less water and mainte nance since they’re adapted to local conditions, and they provide the right food and shelter for local wildlife. On the other hand, non native or ornamental plants look nice but can do more harm than good, aggressively taking over native habitats.

Garden ecology research also shows that diverse gar dens help improve soil health and support a wider variety

R.I.P. George Allen Nama

George Allen Nama, renowned artist, in luential teacher, and proud Montauk local for 55 years, has died. He was 86.

George Nama’s birthplace was Homestead, across the river from Pittsburgh, PA which in the early 1950s witnessed an intensely creative moment with a vibrant jazz scene. Nama was a keen recorder of this stimulating environ ment as one can see in his evocative city scapes.

He studied at Car negie Mellon University (CIT) with undergradu ate and graduate de grees. In the 1960s Nama worked at Wil liam Stanley Hayter’s in luential Atelier 17 in Paris, where he was

It won ive Oscars. 1989 Rain Man, fantastically cast with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, his autis tic brother in the ilm. 1991 Dances with Wolves, another Kevin Costner standout ilm about a Civil War Soldier who be friends wolves and Native Americans. of species. A mix of trees, shrubs, and lowers at different heights can create a more balanced ecosystem. The more plant diversity a garden has… the more kinds of insects, birds, and small mammals it can support. Some home owners even participate in citizen science projects e.g. they can track the species that visit their yards to contribute to conservation research.

Making a garden more wildlife friendly doesn’t require a complete overhaul. One can start by planting a few native species, reducing pesticide use, and letting part of their yard grow more naturally. Even small changes can make a differ ence. For example, leaving fallen leaves for insects to hide in or providing a water source for birds. Backyard gardens may not seem like much, but when enough people take the right steps they become an important part of conservation efforts.

part of an international artistic circle. In 1981 he was elected to the National Academy of Design, New York. He was an in luential teacher of draftsmanship and printmaking, while continuing to develop his own ab stract take on natural forms.

Already involved with poets and writers since the early 1960s, Nama collaborated in 1976 with his friend, the French poet and art historian Yves Bonnefoy. This in turn fostered a series of artists’ books and ex hibitions with Alfred Brendel and Charles Simic. His la test work is The Liberator, a collaboration with his longtime friend, the late writer/director George Romero.

During his long career, Nama has been repre sented in numerous exhibitions, galleries and public collections, such as The Morgan Library, the Boston Athenaeum, The Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Carnegie Institute. He has also been included in the distinguished international art fairs at Maastricht and the Salon de Dessin in Paris.

George found a home and creative sanctuary in Montauk. He is survived by his loving partner, Chrisine Forrest Romero, who will miss him dearly.

George Nama's inal resting place will be in Fort Hill Cemetary, with his favorite view in the world.

32nd Annual ARF Stroll to the Sea 2025

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) had another successful Stroll to the Sea, a walk from East Hampton Mulford Farm to Main Beach. Hundreds of dogs and their humans had a morning of meeting and greeting one another over Dreesen’s donuts, Dylan’s candy, Goldbergs bagels, fresh coffee and apple cider and snacks for the pups. A silent auction offered designer bags and jewelry, local restaurant gift cards, gift baskets for dogs and their owners and custom items like a pet photo shoot. A photobooth was available for participants to snap shots of their canines and friends as well as pet competitions, games and entertainment.

A supporter of ARF, designer Isaac Mizrahi created the signature t-shirt free to participants and commenced the two-mile walk to and from the beach. The event is a joyful opportunity to bring those together that support ARF, animals and the mission to save and rescue animals in need.

Cornbread? It’s usually kind of dry and lavor less…not what you want when craving something sweet. Well, once again, I was too lazy to go out to the store when I got that craving and I didn’t want to take the time to bake cookies or a cake and didn’t want to pull out my mixer and start a project. I wanted some thing quick and easy, with a minimum of dishes to wash. So I went online and found a recipe for a sweet cornbread…but how can that be? Corn bread and sweet just don’t go together. Well, I tried it and it wasn’t bad, but not really what I was looking for though I thought it had possibilities. The next time I tried it I increased the sugar and added some vanilla and honey. Bingo! It came out more like a “cornbread cake” than regular cornbread. The best part is it takes all of 5 minutes to put together with a minimum of dishes to wash. I hope you try it. If you do I know you will enjoy!

SWEET CORNBREAD

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ cup cornmeal

• 1½ cups flour

• cup sugar

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• ½ teaspoon salt

• cup oil

• 3 tablespoons melted butter

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 2 eggs

• 1¼ cups milk

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Whisk together the cornmeal, lour, sugar, bak ing powder and salt in a bowl.

3. Whisk together the oil, melted butter, honey, eggs, milk and vanilla in another bowl.

4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix together until just combined.

5. Pour into a greased 8” square pan (use a metal pan if you have one for that crispy outside)

6. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the cen ter comes out clean.

7. Let cool in the pan and cut into 12 pieces (It doesn’t need to cool all the way to room temperature. Warm is ine, if not better). Enjoy!

A JOURNEY THROUGH BOOKS... with

Sue Giustino

My Friends by Fredrick Backman

The bestselling author of Anxious People and A Man Called Ove has returned with an intriguingly funny yet moving tale about the bonds of teenage friendship and its lasting effects beyond childhood. Through typical adolescent antics as well as not so typical life situations, Backman weaves their story from inding each other through the interdependency that develops along with their friendship; each one helping the others in different ways to navigate unique personalities, trials, and family situations. Inspired by the need to protect one of the most creative and fragile of the group, they relentlessly encourage him to paint a picture to be entered into a contest knowing full well, as children often think they do, that he will win and ultimately get away from their little town.

Twenty ive years after the creation of the painting, an aspiring artist Louisa, while admiring the work, notices and is intrigued by the tiny igures at the end of the long pier. Eventually she inds herself in the unexpected situation of possessing the painting, consequently she’s now even more determined to uncover the story of the nearly hidden ambiguous igures.

With his precise storytelling, the author escorts the reader along with Louisa as she embarks on a bit of an obsessive and unconventional quest of discovery to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. As the narrative shifts between the past and the present, we can’t help but empathize with Louisa throughout her journey, simultaneously experiencing feelings excitement, nervousness, and apprehension with all of them. In his typical way, Bachman’s characters learn that the timeless bonds of friendship and love, as well as happy endings come in many forms.

Friendship, dreams, reasons to love, grief, and the power of art My Friends has it all. Another Fredrick Bachman tale you won’t be able to put down.

Through Escape from Paradise, I continue to share the world’s beauty — from Montauk’s beaches to the mountains of West Virginia. Each story is a cel ebration of life’s textures and lavors, proof that par adise is not a place but a feeling.

What makes Glade Springs unique is its rare blend of natural serenity and resort style living. Spread across thousands of wooded acres, the community includes more than 1,200 residences, beautiful Lake Chatham, and three championship golf courses. The historic Cobb Course belongs to the resort, while Stonehaven and Woodhaven are owned by the Property Owners Association, ensuring residents’ continued enjoyment re gardless of the resort’s future.

Beyond golf, the amenities abound — a hotel, restaurants, café, sports bar, spa, pools, and year round recreation, in cluding shuttles to nearby Winterplace Ski Resort. And just beyond lie New River Gorge National Park and Skyline Moun tain, inviting exploration with breathtak ing vistas and outdoor adventure.

Marcus, who built his career manufacturing golf shirts in Pinehurst, North Carolina, brings quiet strength and steady humor to our partner ship. Together, we’ve faced his battle with metastatic skin cancer — a journey that deep ened our gratitude for every sunrise, every laugh, every walk. “I couldn’t have done it without her,” he says. But truthfully, I couldn’t have done it without him either.

Our kitchen has become a gathering place. Whether it’s rustic bread, fresh salads, or old world comfort dishes, food connects us to both place and memory. My #IngridCooks meals have become their own little tradition among friends and neighbors. Pastor Troy from Glade Commu nity Church still talks about the night we hosted a lounder ish fry with my son Dominic’s fresh North Carolina catch and homemade potato salad. Dominic grew up in Montauk, where the ocean shaped his spirit — much as the mountains shape ours today.

Glade Springs has been many things: a golf destination, a mountain retreat, a gathering place for families and friends. For us, it has been home — a refuge where love and peace quietly coexist. As the resort looks toward a new chapter under future ownership, I can only hope its next stew ards will preserve what makes it so special: the serenity of its trails, the friendships on its fair ways, and the warmth of a community that wel comes all.

Until next month — from another interest ing location.

Monte’s at the Manor...

Continued from Page 11

of breadcrumbs blended with fresh oregano and garlic providing a perfect accent to the tenderness and lavor of the whole clam. Similarly, the Oysters are presented with a perfectly balanced crisp buttery topping of blue cheese, breadcrumbs and just enough lemon to compli ment the brininess of the oyster. Always enjoying a tender Calamari, their Calamari Fritti did not disappoint with a light, crispy coating and tender texture accompa nied by Monte’s own tomato sauce perfection.

After enjoying that amazing array of culinary delights, chef pre sented us with one of each of the numerous entrees avail able on the Pasta, Parm, and Mains sections of the menu.

Grilled New York Strip, also available as pizzaiola, was paired with a simple accent of greens in a gentle vinaigrette allowing the natural good ness of the perfectly grilled steak to shine. If Chicken

Parm is your ‘parm dish' of choice [eggplant and shrimp are also available], Monte’s is a wonderful spot to enjoy it. Creating a meal you’ll want to order again and again, the chicken is pounded tender in the traditional Italian style, cooked with a thin lavorful breadcrumb coating, then inished with the Monte’s to mato sauce that never fails, and just enough mozzarella, parmesan, and basil fritto.

As expected in a ine Italian Eatery, the pasta dishes include a lovely variety of styles used to complement Chef’s creative ingredients. Incorporating one of Monte’s own pastas, is the 3 Buchi Ricotta Pistachio Pesto. Not sure what Buchi was, I did some investigating and dis covered that it’s a speci ic, tubular pasta shape made by the Monte’s brand, inspired by old world Italian tradi tion. The tripled tubular pasta is intentionally designed with a rough texture to hold sauce effectively. I haven’t sampled this dish, but from what I hear from friends, it’s delicious. Other varieties available are Orecchiette, Spa ghetti, Linguini, Pappardelle, Paccheri, and Ravioli. The

one that is both a Chef and Manager favorite Linguini Vongole was sent for our pasta course. Raising the bar of Linguini and Clam sauce to the next level, this dish offers a light yet bold lavorful broth created with a blend of garlic, white wine and olive oil incorporated with an abundance of fresh tender clams, and tossed with al dente linguini. I always have a dif icult time choosing a past while dining at Monte’s, so I usually stay with the Pappardelle with Lobster and Spicy Pink Sauce, the Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage, or the Paccheri Bolognese. Having now enjoyed the Linguini Vongole so much, what will I do? If is this is one of my dilemmas, Life is Good!

So, every multi course Italian meal deserves a tasty teat end ing, and we received quite a few of them. Sweet tart Lemon Sorbet, decadent Chocolate Moose Layer Cake, creamy NY Style Cheesecake with raspberry drizzle, Ital ian Rainbow Cake with the vibrant tri colored almond paste sponge cake layers separated by sweet fruit preserves and covered in a rich chocolate coating, and traditional Cannoli Italian pastry con sisting of a crisp, tube shaped fried dough shell with a hint of cinnamon illed with a sweet, creamy ri cotta cheese illing and chocolate chips. Wow, take your pick, each one is sure to please whatever sweet tooth craving you may have. Varieties vary so check with your waiter. Monte’s is open year round with reduced hours for the off season. Presently they’re open Thursday – Monday for dinner @5pm and Saturday and Sun day for Breakfast 8 11am and 12 4pm for lite bites lunch. Monte’s will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. landings. Suddenly, they got hit by a lucky shot from shore, and those who survived were thrown into the water. Angelo started to sink from the weight of his 60 lb backpack, and in the process of slipping out of it, lost his ri le as well—but that move saved his life. Now he was faced with a 150 yd crawl over a ridiculously lat, hard sand beach under live ire with out his weapon. After crawling through all the gun ire, he made it safely to the sand dune and curled up in the fetal po sition. Finally, some random soldier got up and shouted, “Fol low me,” and promptly got shot. A second guy got up and shouted the same, and this time Angelo grabbed a discarded ri le from the sand and proceeded to follow until they made it to safety up the hill further on.

Hence, this magni icent and terrifying beginning of the end of the Third Reich led to the incredible life I had with my wife, Phyllis, Angelo’s daughter, who was born a few years after his safe return to his home in Brooklyn. Had he not sur vived on that miserable day, my life would never have been the same.

I’ve always felt a burning desire to celebrate this man’s incredible story, and it all came to fruition when the TV star Oliver North came to our family’s business, Gurney’s Inn Re sort in Montauk, NY, to do a segment of his successful series War Stories. Ollie, as he was known, was invited to interview some local WWII veterans, and he was told by our marketing director, Ingrid Lemme, that Angelo Peter Montemarano was a D Day survivor. That made Ollie even more interested to commit to the ilming at our resort. It was only then, during the actual interview, that we all learned about Angelo’s in credible heroism and good fortune. Before that, he never said a word about his wartime service, simply commenting that it was too horrible to speak about.

I immediately set about formulating a plan for a visit to the beaches of Normandy for the 81st anniversary on June 6, 2025, where the Allied Liberation of Europe began by most accounts.

In order to prepare for my mission of paying tribute to my hero father in law, I opened Google Maps and searched for Omaha Beach, Normandy. After inding that, I simply looked at what was shown to be small B&Bs, family hotels, and farm stays. One of them looked 6 km away—close enough to the beaches to walk, I thought, so I began emailing. As luck would have it, the irst to respond was Le Cour Souve raine (The Sovereign Court), a totally reconstructed period farmhouse from the turn of the century. My good fortune con tinued when I met the owners for the irst time, Ségolène and José Luis, who turned out to be the most incredible hosts, car ing for me in a way that only family would know how to do. My most basic language skills in French were a vestige of four years at LaSalle Academy in Manhattan, with only the Hail Mary prayer left in the recesses of my brain. We had a good laugh after I recited the prayer to them and con tinued our conversations in beautifully accented English.

As soon as they real ized the purpose of my mission and tribute, they leapt into action, laying out all the possibilities of acces sing the famous beaches and museums. My irst goal was to ind the Dog Red sector of the Omaha Beach landing zone, and on June 6, I proceeded to walk from the Overlord Museum—a must for any history buff—to the American Cemetery and then the beaches below the cliffs.

The visceral experience of actually walking on this sacred ground, where tens of thou sands of brave Allied troops were killed or wounded, where chaos ruled and luck hovered ever so quietly over the conundrum of who would survive and who wouldn’t, was overwhelming, and I couldn’t stop the low of emotion in this moment.

When I returned to my farm stay that evening, Ségolène handed me an authentic military uniform of a Cana dian Air Force of icer (an integral part of the Allied Expeditionary Forces) and invited me to take part in an annual

military parade in the morning, in a convoy of authentic military vehicles through the villages along the Normandy coast that were among the irst to be liberated. The uniform it me like a glove, and several of the other guests who took part dressed in military fatigues, while Sé golène became a battle ield nurse. So, off we went in a half ton American Jeep, and joined up with Sherman tanks, Deuce and a Halfs, LCT landing craft, Halftracks, and Military Police motorcycles—barreling down the small highways from Pointe du Hoc to the Omaha Beach landing zone. I was joined by Sophie and Claire, two cousins, beautiful souls, and guests of our farm stay, who rode in my vehicle dressed as American Women’s Voluntary Services personnel. Keep in mind that hundreds of local citizens lined the streets along our route, shouting, taking photos, and lashing the peace sign as we lumbered past them. I was awestruck at the depth of the French citizens’ ap preciation of the sacri ices that led to their country being the irst to be liberated, and the demise of the enemy’s occupation of Europe.

My father in law, Angelo Peter Montemarano, will forever live on in our family’s heart for his incred ible service and the sacri ice that so many others had to make and who never returned. We are the lucky ones who will always be indebted to him, as his sur vival changed the lives of many—especially my own.
