FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP

The Sun has finally decided to come out! I'm not talking about Montauk's avorite publication The Montauk Sun, the actual Sun!! The Marinas are coming alive as everyone is getting ready or the upcoming fishing season. The Striped Bass are on their way, so it's just a matter o time be ore Montauk Point comes alive with Birds, Bait, and Blitzing Striped Bass! Actually some smaller Stripers have already arrived, which is a great sign and could indicate an early start to the spring run.

Striped Bass regulations or 2025 will remain unchanged with the Bag limit per person still at one per angler, slot size limit is 28 inches to 31 inches. As ar as the other species that we target in our area, the Porgy (Scup), Black Sea Bass, Bluefish, Fluke (Summer Flounder), we will assume they will remain the same as last year, but never assume when it comes to the regulations. We will post any changes as soon as they become available.

Striped Bass are a great fish to catch, but due to the 3 inch slot limit, a lot more fish are being released. It's important to protect our Striped Bass resource and releasing them properly and quickly is extremely important! When releasing the Striped Bass hold it just behind the belly fins (Pelvic fins) with one hand then with the other hand hold back by the anal fin, then point the fish's head down towards the water and thrust it straight down into the water. This action triggers the instinct to start swimming and enables the Bass to get deep enough to o set any air it may have gotten in its air bladder. Since practicing this technique we have had Zero fish floating on the sur ace struggling to get back down, so it greatly reduces the mortality rate which ensures the uture o the species. When dealing with the smaller species use a small de hooker and try not to touch the fish whenever possible, it's quicker and is much less stress on the fish than grabbing them.

New regulation or the Bluefin Tuna or 2025 is now ONE fish per vessel!! Slot limit is 27 inches to less than 73 inches! Giants have to be 73 inches or greater, which

Surfing Montauk with Debra Rose

School of Surfers

Most surfers try to avoid the pack. Hiding secret spots from outsiders, scheduling when to surf to dodge the crowds, angling re sponsibilities to maximize off peak surf periods. Often surfers can be con sidered antisocial. At the same time there is purposely sur ing with friends, enjoying the camaraderie in the water, and being freaked out to paddle out totally alone. Surfers more likely resemble schools of ish than lone wolves. Which is why the idea of a signing up for an organized surf excursion is baf ling those that love the sport.

Salty Godess Surf Camp on Namotu Island Fiji, Surf Simply in Costa Rica, Tropic Surf with locations all over the most beautiful spots in the world are just a few exam ples of programs for surfers to explore new places and focus on sur ing. As one local notes, “why not go on an organized tour to have access AND priority in otherwise un obtainable spots?” Another surfer disagreed, “why go on a trip when I’m forced to hang with strangers and surf with people at all different levels?”

It depends on where you go and what experience you are looking for.

For a novice that only feels comfortable sur ing with an instructor, or needs help navigating a range of conditions, a private lesson within a group atmosphere in a far lung consistent break may be perfect. For more advanced surfers that want to work on speci ic skills or have lots of repetition, inding a program that gives feedback, inds waves according to your level and groups you with equal level surfers, a trip may be worth while. Advanced surfers may love the cushy entree to places not possible without a company behind them, or may discover new places not yet on their radar such as the Pulau Tropic Surf Four Seasons Explorer boat trip.

One common caveat is the trips that pack in too much; group meals with an agenda, yoga and media tion workshops, nutrition focus and mind body awareness activities. While these are all worthwhile endeavors, they may serve as “ iller” or detract from what surfers really want; waves.

According to a local surfer, “if you dabble in surf ing and want to be associated with sur ing more than you actual want to surf, then go for the Nosara esque surf yoga trip.” Another recommended something like Tropic Surf if you want to experience new places, different boards, and gorgeous locations. Tropic Surf leaves the pampering to the resort, while they focus on the waves. While there is still time before summer and a trip is a consideration, pick a break that you have dreamed of or never heard of and take it from there.

Happy sur ing!

The Montauk

Montauk Fire Department Corner

Hello everyone and welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner. I hope that everyone had a blessed Passover and Easter. I’m sure you’re like me and are looking forward to a beautiful Spring in Montauk.

The Montauk Fire Department was looking good when stepping off in this year’s Montauk Friends of Erin Saint Patrick’s Day parade. The parade was on Sunday, March 30th so, as you can imagine, most other parades had already taken place. This proved to be great for Montauk as the parade had more bands, loats and organizations than usual, and the crowd was larger and full of excitement. As always, we are proud to be

the leading Fire Department in the Parade and to support the Montauk Friends of Erin in this annual event.

On Saturday, April 12th the Montauk Fire Department delivered the Easter Bunny to visit with children and parents alike on Montauk Green. The weather was a bit harsh, but the kids, parents and Easter Bunny made it through with lying colors. I’d like to thank the Montauk Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary for helping with this annual event.

On Thursday, April 17th the department hosted an informational meeting for anyone interested in becoming a ire ighter or EMT in the Montauk Fire Depart ment. I am happy to say that it was well attended, and I am excited at the prospect of having as many as a dozen new members join our ranks. It’s even more exciting to see the folks who are stepping forward to serve our com munity of Montauk. If you’re reading this and are interested, or know of anyone who is interested, there is still time to pick up and submit an appli cation. For further information please call (631) 668 5695.

On Friday, May 9th the Montauk Fire De partment’s Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a BINGO night in the meeting hall at the ire house. This is the third time that the ladies have put on this fundraiser and, by all accounts, it’s a lot of fun with great prizes. Come down on May 9th and enjoy a fun evening with neighbors and friends. Thank you for reading and keeping up to date with the Montauk Fire Department. We’ll see you next month.

For years, Artist Suse Lowenstein has opened her lovely secluded home and sculpture garden each day, right here in Montauk, for visitors to experience her very personal work of art DARK ELEGY. Inspired by the loss of her eldest son, Alexander, in the tragedy of Pan Am light 103, from London to NY that went down over Lockerbie, Scotland in an act of terrorism, killing 270 people; this exhibit is a memorial to all those who have lost their lives to terrorism.

Dear EarthTalk: How has the huge footprint of humanity forced other ani mal and plant species to evolve differ ently than they might otherwise have without people around?

~ Lois V., New York, NY

Humans have profoundly altered the planet, driving plants and animals to adapt in ways they never would have without our impact. Through activities like habitat destruction, pollution, cli mate change, hunting and introducing invasive species, humans have signi i cantly accelerated evolutionary changes, transforming ecosystems in dramatic and often unpredictable ways.

One example is the rise of tuskless elephants. Decades of ivory poaching have created intense pressure on African elephants. In regions of heavy poaching, up to half of female elephants are now tuskless, an adaptation showing how humans can profoundly alter the ge netic makeup of another animal population.

Urban environments have also become hotspots for what some researchers consider accelerated evolu tion. During the Industrial Revolution, peppered moths in England evolved darker colors to blend into soot covered trees. Today, insects and city dwelling birds are similarly adapting to human made con ditions. Pigeons have modi ied their eating habits to thrive on discarded food, and some mosquito species have adapted to reproduce in tiny water collections present in city environments. These alterations illus trate the adaptability of species adjusting to environ ments changed by humans.

Chemical resistance is another area where human in luence is clear. The widespread use of pesticides and antibiotics has driven the evolution of resistant pests and bacteria. Farmers battle “superweeds” that can survive herbicides, and healthcare providers face rising concerns over antibiotic resistant bacteria. Climate change has further expedited evolutionary shifts. Animals are altering their migration patterns and breeding seasons to adapt to warmer tempera tures. Birds like the great tit in Europe are laying eggs earlier in the spring to align with the availability of insects. Similarly, marine species are moving to cooler waters. This disrupts ecosystems and isheries

These adaptations showcase the nature’s incredible resilience, despite some notable drawbacks. Rapid evolution can lead to reduced biodiversity, as species unable to adapt face extinction. Ecosystem imbal ances arise as invasive species prevail, pushing out native organisms. According to the National Wildlife Federation, human activities are driving an unprece dented rate of evolutionary change. To help, choose sustainably sourced products, reduce waste, and sup port conservation efforts to protect habitats and species. Advocacy for policies that address climate change and pollution is also key.

Dear EarthTalk: What are so called “green corri dors” in cities and how do they help mitigate climate change? ~ Peter Q, Boston, MA

Green corridors, or ecological corridors, are strips of vegetation and natural landscape dispersed throughout a city. From simple, street lined rows of trees to interconnected networks of parks and path ways, these developments provide a lexible, natural solution for the climate effects of urbanization. One of the most pressing environmental hazards cities face today is the urban heat island effect. Large buildings, expansive roads and other man made in frastructures absorb more heat than surrounding rural areas, leading to signi icantly higher tempera ture levels. When combined with global warming,

Humans’ increasingly large footprint across the planet is forcing plants & animals to adapt and is affecting some species’ evolutionary path, such as in the case of up to half of female elephants not growing tusks in heavily poached regions of Africa. Credit: Robin Cafolla, FlickrCC.

So, I had a realy big “oven stuffer roaster” in my freezer, taking up a lot of room, waiting for it’s opportu nity to shine. I love the aroma of a chicken roasting...it makes the house smell like a Sunday at home with my Mom and brothers. But, I have a problem with these big chickens...there are only two of us here and neither of us ever eats the dark meat! It ends up forgotten in the back

of my refrigerator until the next garbage day. So, I always try to ind something to do with dark meat so it won't go bad. Well, this time, I igured why not Matzo Ball Soup? It tastes good, and it’s kinda fun watching the Matzo Balls puff up as they cook.

This chicken was so big, that I found it a good oppor tunity to make my own stock. I cut the chicken up and put all the dark meat...the legs, thighs, wings and back, plus the giblets that came with the chicken...into my biggest Dutch oven along with two carrots and two onions, each just quartered and 4 cloves of smashed garlic along with two gallons of water and let it simmer on the stovetop for ive or six hours. This also gives me the opportunity to draw off my own Schmaltz (Chicken Fat). But, you don’t have to!!! I ind the boxed stocks to be delicious and using butter to be ine, although schmaltz does give a nice lavor. If using boxed stock, remember to use low or no sodium Chicken Stock. This way, if salt content is important to you, as it is to me and my doctor, you can control it. Your soup will have a lighter color than mine if you’re using boxed stock, but that’s ine. Homemade stock is always darker.

The following recipe came from the dad of my dea rest friend. Besides our senses of humor, cooking was another thing we had in common. I hope you enjoy.

MATZO BALL SOUP

MATZO BALLS:

2 cups Matzo Meal

• ¼ tsp. Baking Soda

• 1 tsp. Salt

• 4 Eggs

• 2 tbsp. Melted Butter

• or Schmaltz (Chicken Fat), if you’re lucky enough to have it ¼ cup Seltzer Water

SOUP:

• 1 Onion, roughly chopped

3 tbsp. Vegetable, Olive Oil, or Schmaltz

• 2 Large Carrots, roughly chopped

• 3 Celery Stalks, roughly chopped

• 4 cloves Garlic, minced

• ½ cup White Wine

• 2 quarts Low Sodium Chicken Stock

2 Bay Leaves

1 tbsp. Fresh Dill

• Salt & Pepper to taste (Begin with ½ tsp. salt and

• ¼ tsp. pepper and add more, if needed.)

½ Chicken, cooked and shredded into bite size

• pieces (leftovers or supermarket rotisserie chickens are great for this)

Par cooked sliced Carrots and Celery

• Fresh Dill to Garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) In a medium bowl, stir to gether the Matzo Meal, Bak ing Soda and Salt until well combined. In another bowl whisk the Eggs, Butter (or Schmaltz) and Seltzer Water. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until evenly incorporated. Refrig erate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or up to 6. While they’re in the refrigerator, prepare your soup.

2) In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, heat the Oil on medium heat and gently sauté the Onion, Carrots, Celery and Garlic for about 15 minutes, or until the vegetables start to soften.

Continued on Next Page

Add the Wine and cook for another 2 or 3 minutes. Add the Chicken Stock. Tie the Bay Leaves and Dill in a ‘bouquet garni’ (a little sack of herbs tied in cheese cloth with butcher’s twine), add to the pot and simmer for an hour longer. Remove the pot from the heat.

3) Using a “spider” or a slotted spoon, remove the vegetables and bouquet garni from the pot. They’ve given up all they had. Add the shred ded Chicken and Salt & Pepper to taste. Set the soup aside, off heat. Now…back to the Matzo Balls.

4) Heat a large stockpot full of water to a gentle boil (you don’t want to cook the Matzo Balls directly in the soup, as they will absorb all the broth). Wet your hands slightly and form the matzo mixture into golf ball sized balls (the Matzo Balls will expand as they cook). Set each one aside on a plate. A light touch is needed here…the more you handle the mixture, the tougher the Matzo Ball will be!

5) After you’ve formed all of your Matzo Balls, carefully drop each one into the gently boiling water. Cover and cook at a gentle boil for 30 minutes. They’re done when expanded to double the size and they are loat ing on top of the water.

6) Gently add the cooked Matzo Balls, along with your par cooked carrots and celery, into the soup about 15 minutes before you’re ready to serve, while gently heating the soup. Don’t skip this step, as the Matzo Balls will absorb some lavor from the stock. Serve garnished with the Fresh Dill

SPRING IS HERE!

Even before the irst of icial day of spring arrival on the calendar, there were signs all around us. The most noted in our house was the tweets and squawks of birds early in the morning. I happen to be an early riser, so the cheery morning sounds didn’t awake me, but I’ve heard complaints from friends that say they are light sleepers they heard every peep! To me this is a minor nuisance when we think about winter being over and a new season has started! We can look all around us and see Mother Nature beginning to display her early growing lowers popping out of the ground for us to enjoy. Years ago I copied a loral design I saw passing a driveway not too far from our house that was abso lutely gorgeous. The homeowners had daffodils blooming on either sides of their driveway that looked like a welcoming burst of yellow color as a spring greeting. This stunning display prompted me to try and copy the same idea. After that I bought bags of daffodil bulbs and planted at least ifty of them each fall over the next several years. My aim was to also have a stunning driveway that would greet our visits with the same visual impact. While the effect in our driveway is also pretty, it appears the squirrels in my area decided some of the

While we know morning bird calls often signal the arrival of spring, there are other animals whose names have become associ ated with human traits or person alities. How did the owl receive the title of being wise? What did they do to deserve this honor? To be as strong as a horse or as stubborn as a mule as always been easy to rec ognize because these animal have demonstrated these qualities. See which animal you can name by the brief description of a human trait that is as sociated with it.

another female, sounding a bit jealous about her looks, wardrobe or accomplishments.

3) To move slowly, have no energy or being a bit lazy or as we’d say a couch potato

4) When something doesn’t seem right or is a bit sus picious it could be described as being a bit what?

5) Going back to our childhood days, most of us have called a playmate this name when they were afraid of doing something like going off the high diving board at the pool, or roller skating down a steep hill.

6) How many parents have reprimanded a very young child being impatient or idgety while sitting at a place we were supposed to be quiet or still, using this phase?

7) While on the buffet line and one ills up a plate to over lowing and mom taking notice might say, don’t take more than your share and be such a…?

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE

with Ingrid Lemme Chalut

Spring Break Adventure in New Smyrna Beach, FL

Spring break had always been a time for fun and adventure for Marcus. Growing up in Germany, I had only seen spring break scenes in movies or on the news. This year, we decided to head down to New Smyrna Beach, FL, a place known for its expansive shores, vibrant atmosphere, and rich history. As soon as we arrived, the energy of the area was palpable, with the sun shining brilliantly and casting a golden hue over the wide, drive on beach. New Smyrna Beach, with its roots deeply embedded in history, offers more than just picturesque views. Established in 1768 by Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician and entrepreneur, the area was initially settled by colonists from Minorca, Greece, and Italy. The town is one of the oldest in Florida, and its historic charm is evident in the ar chitecture and the stories that have been passed down through generations.

The beach was alive with activity. Cars and trucks were parked along the sand, their radios blaring the latest hits, creating a lively sym phony that mixed with the sound of the waves. We couldn't help but admire the many bathing beauties lounging under colorful umbrellas or playing in the surf, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of down town. The heat was on. One of the things that struck us was the reassuring presence of it, good looking police of icers stationed on every corner. Their friendly demeanor and attentive vigilance ensured that the spring break joy didn't get out of hand, al

Five Star- 7 days ago NEW Vacation · Family I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience at Tipperary in Montauk because the staff truly deserves recognition. This hotel is the best deal in the area, offering both an unbeatable location and outstanding service.

Tipperary is conveniently located near the docks, making it perfect for anyone looking to enjoy Montauk's coastal charm. The proximity to the water and local attractions adds to the overall appeal of this gem.

What truly sets Tipperary apart, however, is the incredible staff. The receptionist was incredibly kind and welcoming, making check-in a breeze. The housekeeping staff, particularly Jeanette, went above and beyond to ensure our room was spotless and comfortable throughout our stay. Jeanette’s dedication to her work was evident in every detail.

Our stay at Tipperary was a delightful experience, thanks to the exceptional staff and prime location. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Montauk. You won't be disappointed!

these uncomfortable living conditions can be very detrimental for urban residents. Local air quality also deteriorates from industrial and transportation pollution. With an expected 68 percent of world pop ulation in cities by 2050, according to the U.N., the health situation in urban environments will only grow worse.

Green corridors offer a promising start to miti gating these urban issues, allowing cities to naturally lower temperatures through evapotranspiration, a plant process that releases water vapor to cool the surrounding air. Increased vegetation will also allow more hazardous particulate matter (PM2.5) and car bon dioxide (CO2) to be absorbed, reducing green house gas concentration and improving air quality.

Columbia’s second largest city, Medellín, launched a green corridor initiative in 2016. Since then, environmental planners there added rows of vegetation along the most polluted avenues, maxi mizing the amount of CO2 intake from their $16.8 million investment. Maurício Correa, a researcher studying environmental engineering at a Colombian University, found that the 8,800 trees planted became effective “green barriers” against particulate matter and reduced average city temperature by two de grees Celsius.

Fighting climate change isn’t the only thing green corridors can do. Historically, wildlife has rarely been welcomed into urban life, experiencing drastic changes in the ecosystem. However, nature based infrastructure can pro

mote biodiversity and provide animal species with a safe habitat. Green corridors are indeed multi pur pose and lexible. To maximize the limited space in busy cities, green corridors can function as recre ational centers, city facilities and much more—all while mitigating climate change.

Green corridors can be an effective solution for any city anywhere. In New York, the Manhattan Wa terfront Greenway consists of almost 32 miles of bike path lined with various plant species. Urban “Nature Ways” in Singapore mimic the natural rain forests by incorporating trees with canopies stretch ing across the roads.

Dear EarthTalk: Why is the Great Salt Lake shrink ing so much and can it be saved? ~ E.T., via email

Utah’s Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. It is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, which dried up 14,000 years ago due to extreme drought. It contributes $1.9 billion annually to Utah’s economy and provides 7,700 jobs. Over 10 million birds rely on this lake for their sur vival.

Apart from natural luctuations, the Great Salt Lake’s water level has dropped continuously since 1870, mainly due to the desiccation of the lake in the diversion of upstream water. The Great Salt Lake gets most of its water from the Bear, Weber and Jordan rivers, but now a signi icant portion of water is being diverted for agricultural and industrial use. Climate change and increase in temperature are also contributing to the Great Salt Lake’s desiccation. Due to tem perature increases, the rate of evap oration has also increased, impacting the salinity of the lake. Agriculture dominates water use by 74 percent, nine percent by mineral extraction, nine percent by indus trial use and eight percent by evap oration.

“The lake has a lot of social and economic relevance for the region and Utah,” says Siiri Bigalke, a cli mate scientist at Portland State Uni versity who has studied recent

Best Of...

Spring cleaning isn’t a novel concept. Wardrobe edits. Donating things that no longer “bring you joy.” Making sure your clean out is extreme enough to have a psychological impact. We know what to do and are getting better at it, but what about the things we hold on to?

Are you using the things you are “saving?” Items you are not ready to get rid of, but you are reluctant to part with for a sentimental reason (a wedding gift)? Or that seem too fancy for every day use? Use them!

Experiencing what we have around for the future may be more challenging to utilize than letting go of things associated with the past. We may have a moment that inspires us to inally get rid of something or we ind a use elsewhere which feels easier to give away certain possessions (a dress for your niece, books for friends, dish ware for a rental house). Maybe we realize if the house were on ire and we wouldn’t grab it or it’s something not worth bringing on a trip, it’s time to toss it.

Many struggle with taking out the fancier things saved for a special occasion, either fearing the situation is not warranted or worse, if you do use what you are “saving,” will actual events lose their exclusivity?

There are many things in life to celebrate designated occasions by the calendar, holidays, family rituals. There are rituals you create and plans that you can cultivate, whenever you want, however you want. Why not make the most of your best of items, and if you ind that you cannot, maybe they join the exodus of items that no longer “spark joy.” The time is now, and nothing is permanent. Cheers!

“LUSEE-NIGHT: A RADIO TELESCOPE ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON” (A FREE, VIRTUAL LECTURE)

THURSDAY, MAY 8th, 7:00 8:00pm

LOCATION: Hamptons Observatory (Online)

CO HOST: Suffolk County Community College

SPEAKER: Dr. Anže Slosar, Brookhaven National Lab

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: https://bit.ly/LunarTalk

LuSEE Night is a joint project between NASA and Department of Energy to land a radio telescope on the far side of the Moon by late 2025. The long term scienti ic program is to study the Dark Ages, the cosmic era between the last scattering of the cosmic microwave background and the time when the irst stars and galaxies formed. Only cold, non luminous hydrogen gas existed during this epoch, and so it has

been largely unexplored and remains one of the least constrained frontiers of modern cosmology. Very low frequency radio observations (below 50MHz) are impossible from the Earth due to man made and natural radio interference in addition to ionosphere which absorbs and refracts low frequency radio waves. The far side of the Moon is believed to be the best place to do such observation in the entire solar system: Moon has not atmosphere and during the lunar night it is shielded from both Earth and the Sun. However, to date nobody has been successful at operating a radio telescope there. Dr. Slosar will explain the immense technical challenges and the scienti ic promise of being successful.

Dr. Anže Slosar is a cosmologist and physicist known for his work in observational cosmology, particularly using data from the Cosmic Microwave

volume levels of the Great Salt Lake. In deed, the cost of the Great Salt Lake dry ing—including loss of mineral extraction, landscape mitigation costs, the loss of lake recreation and economic value, the loss of brine shrimp, health costs, and im pacts to ski resorts—could total as much as $2.17 billion per year. The decline in Great Salt Lake water levels could kill some 6,500 jobs, most of which stem from a loss of mineral extraction output. Re searchers say the tax rate in Utah would have to increase by more than 50 percent to make up for these potential losses.

The desiccation of the Great Salt Lake will lead to air and water pollution, a decline in agricultural productivity, loss of industry, and economic devastation.

Even if the lake is not completely lost, the shrinkage can expose lakebed sediments containing heavy metals and organic pol lutants which could signi icantly deterio rate air quality.

To save the lake, a minimum stream low of 2.5 million acre feet per year must be maintained. Ensuring that river low remains at or above this threshold is es sential for stabilizing the lake’s water levels. Water low to upstream farms should be limited. Local governments should coordinate with state and federal programs to expand water conservation awareness. You can get involved by cre ating and sharing media on this issue to raise awareness. Additionally outdoor vegetation should be converted to drought tolerant to conserve water.

Dear EarthTalk: Are seaweed farms good for the planet or is that just indus try hype? ~ Josiah Barnes

The production of seaweed has boomed to over 35 million tons in the past few years, while the industry has become a $16.7 billion market. Its pop ularity is due to its notable ecological bene its, like its absorption of carbon, production of food and marine habitat production. Seaweed proponents praise them for being easy to grow and cre

Have a Happy and Safe Grilling Seaon!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t wait until Memorial Day to start my grilling season. It happens every year...usually in early March I buy a couple of nice steaks and put them in my freezer awaiting the first warm, sunny day of the season. But first, there’s work to be done and some things of which you should be aware. In 2013-2017 outdoor grilling caused an annual average of 10,200 home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Gas grills caused more home fires than charcoal grills, the association added. Regardless of the type of grill you own, here are some safety tips that will keep you and your home safe for the grilling season:

1. Grill outside and away from any structures: Charcoal and gas grills are designed for outdoor use only. However, NFPA reports that more than one-quarter (27%) of home fires started by outdoor grills began in a courtyard, terrace or patio, and 29% started on an exterior balcony or open porch. Pay attention to overhanging tree branches when you set up your grill.

2. Make sure your grill is stable: Only set up your grill on a flat surface and make sure the grill can’t be tipped over. Consider using a grill pad or splatter mat underneath your grill to protect your deck or patio.

3. Keep your grill clean: Remove grease or fat buildup from both the grill and the tray below the grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to completely cool off before disposing of them in a metal container.

4. BEWARE THE WIRE BRUSH: If you use a stainless steel or brass wire brush to remove stuck-on food from grill grates, be aware of this surprising downside: Small, sharp bristles can break off as you’re cleaning and get stuck to your grill’s cooking surface. The next time you grill, those stray bristles may adhere to food and be accidentally ingested. (This happened to my brother! He ended up in the emergency room with a wire bristle lodged in his throat! My nephew told me he was quite the celebrity in the ER that night...all the doctors wanted to see it.) As a matter of fact, an estimated 1,700 Americans went to the emergency room between 2002 and

A JOURNEY THROUGH BOOKS...

OUT EAST From Above

An Aerial View of the South Fork…

…is a cocktail table photo book created by sisters Laney Stewart and Kaeley Michaelson, showcasing an array of breathtaking aerial photos of Long Island’s South Fork. Including some of the most intriguing places to stay, eat, explore and frolic, the book is not a history of Montauk and East Hampton, but rather an alternate picturesque view of the East End through the eyes of these sisters who have called it ‘home’, at least part time, since childhood.

Laney, Kaeley and their family have a long history in East which you will discover in the heartfelt Preface and Introduction. The book’s Forward is penned by Joey er Estate Vinyards, in which she captures the this beautiful collection of photos. “The Hamptons isn’t just a picturesque getaway, it’s where community thrives. Neighbors near and far come together to celebrate the seasons, support local businesses, and cherish the unique bond that living in this beautiful corner of the world fosters.”

Along with many photographic visits ‘from above’ to some of the area’s sprawling, serene beaches and local accommodations, other sections highlight some iconic long time establishments, including Puff & Putt Ditch Witch Gosman’s and the Montauk Bake Shop… as well as newer ones, including Amber Waves Montauk Brew Alimentari Beach and the Montauk Skate Park. Paired with concise introductions to each section, and additional informative narrative and/or quotes for many of the sites, this visually pleasing work of artistically displayed photos depicts the beauty in every aspect of our beloved East End.

Such a wonderful joining of talents between sisters with a result that is eye catching and enjoyable for all. The beautiful cover and unique edge treatment will make it a lovely addition to any tabletop. Be sure to pick up your copy of Out East From Above at your local bookstore.

After spending a couple of hours strolling up and own Flagler Avenue, taking in the sights, our stom achs began to rumble. Marcus suggested we try out Third Wave Café, a local favorite known for its cre ative sandwiches and laid back vibe. Nestled among the palm trees, the café was a hidden gem, offering a cozy outdoor setting that perfectly complemented the beachy mood. We settled at a table under the shade of a large umbrella, the scent of fresh toasted breads and brewing coffee wafting through the air. The menu was a delightful surprise, featuring an array of inventive sandwiches that promised to take our taste buds on a journey. Marcus or dered the chicken salad on a croissant sandwich with fresh Granny Smith slices, pickles, and marinated garlic, while I opted for an avocado BLT.

Ocean Club Montauk… at the Montauk Yacht Club

Celebrating a special birthday, we were thrilled to have a delicious meal at the all new Ocean Club. The elegant woodwork in the dining room paired with the nau tical view through the sprawling windows provides a breathtaking ambiance. The bar is roomy and lively, with its own marina vista, creative cocktails, Happy Hour offerings, and weekly live music that is always enjoyable.

Although they were only open for a week, the staff were obviously well trained offering smiles, greetings, and a clear understanding of the menu, which brings me to the outstanding menu. During April, there is a weekly prix ix created by Chef Jarad; starting with a special Chef amuse bouche to whet the appetite, followed by choices of starters, mains, and desserts. There is an option to skip dessert however, after our savory treats, I would highly recommend saving room for whichever dec adent delights are offered.

Since there were four of us dining we were able to sample each item including the tuna tartare and beef cheek appetizers, as well as the three mains; mushroom pepper pappardelle, béarnaise salmon, and the tender short rib. Full of clean, fresh, mouthwatering lavor, each dish tasted as wonderful as it looked.

South African Chef Jarad McCarroll brings seasonal menus highlighting just caught sea food, local produce, a raw bar, and wood ired Braai grilling. Unlike terrestrial crops like trees, ruits, vegetables and herbs, seaweed re quires no ertilizer, pesticides, reshwater or land to grow. Seaweed arms also create orage and re uge habitats or commercially important fish, like cod and tuna, while acting as a ood source or countless other species.

Seaweed can also decrease the impacts o carbon and other green house gases. By absorbing both nutrients and carbon dioxide to grow, seaweed decreases the number o toxic emissions entering oceans and the atmosphere. Seaweed pulls more greenhouse gases rom water than eelgrass, mangroves and salt marshes combined. F LOWER M OON

The full Moon May 2025 marks the peak of spring in many parts of North America that acts as a transition into summer’s sunny days and warm nights. The May full Moon is often called the “Flower Moon” with rev erence to abundant lowers in bloom, a prelude to Mother Nature’s coming attractions. But what other names does this special spring full Moon go by in different cultures?

Full Moon May 2025: Monday, May 12

Peak Illumination: 12:56 p.m. Eastern time

Zodiac Sign: Scorpio

Origin Of The Flower Moon Name

May is the month when hundreds of native lowers, sedges, bushes and trees blossom throughout North America bloom. Columbine’s intricate red and yellow bell like lowers with deep nectaries provide early season food for hummingbirds and other long tongued pollinators. Lance leaf coreopsis produces a plethora of bright yellow, daisy like lowers. Gar deners who promptly dead head spent blossoms pro long the bloom period through July. Meanwhile large stands of pink hued prairie smoke create a hazy effect resembling smoke hovering close to the ground.

May’s full Moon bears the name of regionally sig ni icant lowers and blooms in other regions.

In the Southeast, the Creek and Choctaw refer to

it as the “Mulberry Moon.” Fruit from the native red mulberry tree have long been enjoyed in many forms. As dried fruit, as an additive to water and even mixed into cornbread. Fruit, leaves, and twigs were used to make dyes and the branches were used to make bows.

In the Paci ic Northwest, May’s full Moon is known by the Kalapuya as “Camas Blooming Time.” Camas blue lowers cover meadows throughout Ore gon, eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Camas has been a key food source in Northwest Native diets for centuries. When the blooms fade and set seed in June and July, native peoples would harvest the nu trient rich roots. They kept larger bulbs and returned smaller roots to the soil to ensure a good harvest the following year.

Related May Full Moon Names

Not to be out done by the blooms of spring, May is the month when leaves burst from their buds. It’s the irst time since the previous fall for many parts of North America to once again enjoy all the gorgeous ness of green. It makes sense the Apache refer to this as “The Season When The Leaves Are Green.” The La kota call it the “Moon Of The Green Leaves” while the Mohawk name it “The Time Of Big Leaf.”

As the green leaves ill the trees, the last of the hard frosts leave these regions, making it safe for farmers to plant their ields. May’s full Moon has been a harbinger of planting season called the “Field Maker Moon” by the Abenaki, “Corn Moon” by the Winnebago and “When Women Weed Corn” by Algonquin in Northeast to Great Lakes. The East Cherokee strict translation for this is “The Putting It In A Hole Moon.”

More Names For The May Full Moon

In other regions, the full Moon marks a time re lated to animals. The Passamaquoddy in Northeast in the St. Croix River region call it the “Alewive Moon.” Also known as the river herring, these migratory ish

The Cree in the Northern Plains into Canada call it the “Frog Moon.” Anyone who has heard the call of the spring peeper frog can attest to appropriateness of this name.

In Europe, May’s Moon is known as the “Milk Moon.” This name dates back o medieval times be cause May was the month when cows were moved to their summer pastures. These ields provided mother cows with rich nourishment to feed their newborn calves.

throat! My nephew told me he was quite the celebrity in the ER that night...all the doctors wanted to see it.) As a matter of fact, an estimated 1,700 Americans went to the emergency room between 2002 and 2014 after having ingested wire bristles in grilled food, according to a study published in 2016 in the journal OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery. Consider using a pumice stone or a coil-shaped bristle-free brush. I use a home-made brush...a wadded up piece of foil held with a long handled pair of tongs! After heating your grill, use the foil to scrub off the grates.

5. Check for propane leaks on your gas grill: Before the season’s first barbecue, check the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas. If there is a propane leak, the solution will bubble. Other

signs of a propane leak include the smell of gas near the barbecue or a flame that won’t light.

6. If the flame goes out, wait to re-light: If you are using a gas grill and the flame goes out, turn the grill and the gas off, then wait at least five minutes to re-light it.

7. Take care around the grill: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Don’t allow kids or pets to play near the grill. Never try to move a lit or hot grill, and remember the grill will stay hot for at least an hour after use.

In this re spectful and trustworthy environment, your most signif icant strength is your ability to be vulnerable. A touch of charm also enhances your appeal. Being honest fosters originality, even if you need to create a new trend.

8. Be careful with charcoal starter fluid: If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid. If the fire starts to go out, don’t add any starter fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Consider using a charcoal chimney starter, which uses newspaper to start the fire instead of starter fluid.

9. Wear the right clothing: Loose fitting clothing is NOT ALLOWED! Clothing can easily catch fire, so be sure your shirt tails, sleeves or apron strings don’t dangle over the grill.

10. Be ready to put out the fire: Have a fire extinguisher nearby...and check that it is charged and ready to use! A fire extinguisher should be purchased at the time you purchase your grill! If you can’t afford a fire extinguisher, you can’t afford a grill. Never use water to put out a grease fire, it will just spread it.

These easy-to-follow tips will help you and your family to enjoy a safe and fun grilling season. ENJOY!

BIOGRAPHICAL MOVIES

Admittedly we are film bu s in our household. Whether it is a mystery, geographical topics, travel in spired or light hearted antasy, we like to watch them all. However, on top o my personal avorite’s list has to be biographical films that delve deeper into the li e story o the subject. Naturally, the persons these films are about absolutely quali y to be the subject o a two hour story ollowing them or there would be no purpose in making it. Whether it is how these people overcame obstacles, rose to ame, competed in physical challenges or made discoveries that impacted others, their stories are inspi rational. O ten through watching these films one can dis cover another side o the person that can be overshadowed by their ame or even misunderstood by those looking in rom the outside. Over the years, we’ve watched a list o power ul films that were engrossing, and showed a side o the subject that was totally unex pected. Even in the case o a Hollywood actor we thought we knew everything about rom tabloids or TV, a bio

graphic film can uncover more to admire about the per son. Here is a brie list o our avorites worth viewing.

Arnold – This Netflix three part series was about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s li e and career and Arnold appeared doing the narration throughout. It started with his body building days, to his Hollywood films we all recognize and finally his changeover into politics. His sense o humor and speaking about some o his li e regrets, gives a peek into what makes Arnold who he is.

Sly – Sylvester Stallone’s li e story was an eye opener where he describes how he escaped rom his “rocky childhood” by watching films. In a touching, sensitive moment “Sly” de scribed why “his mouth has that crooked slant and what caused it and his speech to sound the way he does.” Both Arnold and Sly reveal another side o these men that we didn’t realize besides their superhero like persona.

Big Eyes – Do you remember the paintings that were popular in the 1960’s where the subjects had oversized, doe like eyes? Margaret Keane was the artist that drew children, adults and animals with these distinct eatures. Her li e story is intriguing because her arrogant husband claimed he was the original artist in the 1950’s when she became amous and he told her “a male artist would be better accepted”, so he took credit.

Hillbilly Elegy – When amed director Ron Howard se lects a film topic, you can be guaranteed it is a power ul story. This is true o his movie, Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir by J.D. Vance that Howard turned in an engrossing film and almost unbelievable story o a terrible childhood that only a strong person could endure and overcome. The original book by Ohio Senator Vance was about the poverty he grew up in Appalachia and the surrounding Rust Belt communities.

NYAD – We saw this film originally at the Hampton Inter national Film Festival (HIFF) in October 2023, but it is now eatured on Netflix. It is the true story o athlete, Diana Nyad that had a dream to swim rom Cuba to Flor ida, which is more than 100 miles o ocean. Annette Ben ing stars as the 60 year old Nyad that finally accomplished her dream a ter many harrowing tries. Co star, Jodie Foster, played Nyad’s coach through the ex hausting, several year’s long experience.

A Beautiful Day in the Neigh borhood is a title that every one that watched Mr. Rogers recognizes the title or his opening song. This film ollows the real li e riendship be tween Fred Rogers and a jour nalist Lloyd Vogel. Apparently the journalist was a bit skepti cal about Mr. Rogers’ sincere personality and in interview ing his subject, thought he would uncover a less than ap pealing persona. He didn’t and a lasting riendship developed.

Try to watch at least one bi ography a month and you will see a whole new world o un derstanding personalities, ambition and positivity that propelled those to greater heights and achievements!

Hamptons Doc Fest, in partnership with the Southampton Arts Center, celebrates Mother’s Day this year for the irst time. Ada Karmi Melamede is one of the most ac complished and proli ic female architects in the world, yet is little known of her outside of architectural circles or her home country of Israel.

Her daughter Yael Melamede, a ilmmaker and former architect, has sought to cor rect that with her moving documentary Ada My Mother the Architect (2024, 81 min.), now playing at ilm festivals around the world and right here in Southampton.

Ada lived for nearly two decades in the United States, raising her three children, teaching at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, working on major New York City projects like a master plan for Con Edison, a study of mixed use devel opment along the proposed Sec ond Avenue Subway, and a 1978 housing competition on Roosevelt Island.

After being denied tenure, she made the dif icult decision to leave her family and move to Is rael, when asked to design the new Supreme Court building in Je rusalem. She later shaped other major landmarks such as The Open University, Ben Gurion Air port, and the Israel Institute for Democracy.

After the screening, both di rector Yael Melamede and her mother Ada Melamede will ap pear live at the Southampton Arts Center for the Q&A.

“I’m incredibly pleased that we were able to invite Yael and her mother to attend the screening in person and speak afterwards about their lives,” said Jacqui Lofaro, founder and executive director of Hamptons Doc Fest. “Ada’s impact on Israeli architec ture is profound. But the sacri ice of leaving her life and family behind is at the heart of this ilm. Every mother and daughter needs to experience this story. And every architect needs to experience it as if it were a master class.”

Tickets are $20 ($15 for SAC members). Tickets are available at www.hamptons docfest.com and www.southamptonartscenter.org.

The AIA is offering two education credits to member architects who attend.

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2024 will occur on Sunday, May 12th. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an of icial U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s com mercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with lowers, cards and other gifts.

History of Mother’s Day: Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother god desses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.

Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with lowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

Did you know? More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traf ic to spike by as much as 37 percent.

Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe: The origins of Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children.

These clubs later became a unify ing force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.

Another precursor to Mother’s Day came from the abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2.

Other early Mother’s Day pioneers include Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance ac tivist who inspired a local Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the 1870s. The duo of Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, meanwhile, both worked to organize a Mothers’ Day in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some have even called Hering “the father of Mothers’ Day.”

Anna Jarvis Turns Mother's Day Into a National Holiday: The of icial Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacri ices mothers made for their children.

After gaining inancial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908, she organized the irst of icial Mother’s Day celebration

at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia.

Following the success of her irst Mother’s Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood.

By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day Interna tional Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure of icially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Jarvis Decries Commercialized Mother’s Day: Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her ver sion of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before lorists, card companies and other merchants capital ized on its popularity.

While Jarvis had initially worked with the loral industry to help raise Mother’s Day’s pro ile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized. She outwardly denounced the transformation and urged peo ple to stop buying Mother’s Day lowers, cards and candies.

Jarvis eventually resorted to an open campaign against Mother’s Day pro iteers, speaking out against confectioners, lorists and even charities. She also launched countless law suits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth in legal fees. By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the hol iday altogether, and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar.

After lunch, we set out to visit an old friend, Linda Troeller, who had recently moved to New Smyrna Beach, just a 20 minute ride from down town. Linda, a famous photographer and ilmmaker, had been a signi icant part of my life during my days as the marketing director at Gurney's in Montauk. She and her husband, Lothar, a talented photographer as well, greeted us warmly at their charming home, nestled in a serene neighborhood surrounded by lush greenery. Their home was a gallery in itself, with walls adorned with her stunning pho tographs that captured the essence of her life and Healing Waters. Her ilm documen tary, Healing Waters, celebrated for its artis tic depth, had garnered her the prestigious Vanguard award from the Nevada Women's Film Festival for her life achievement, which we share in her biography ilm. Healing Waters is a 90 minute documentary that explores Linda Troeller's work with key igures in the art photography industry. We spent the afternoon reminiscing about the good old days in Montauk, where Linda's photo shoots at Gurney's had become legendary. During our visit, I had the pleasure of conducting a 10 minute interview with Linda, discussing her latest accolade—the 2024 Vanguard Award from the Nevada Women’s Film Festi val for her "Healing Waters" ilm. This documentary

delves into her life story, drawing inspiration from her book "Healing Waters," published by Aperture. As the interview concluded, Linda smiled warmly. "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this," she said. "It's always wonderful to connect with people who appreciate the art and the stories behind it. Check out 'Healing Waters' on Prime Video!" I promised to up load the interview to my YouTube channel, eager to share Linda's incredible journey and insights with my viewers. It was a privilege to capture a small piece of her immense talent and share it with the world. https://youtu.be/x4lWcQbkRxs — As we said our good byes, promising to keep in touch and visit more often, Marcus and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the day we had experienced. New Smyrna Beach had offered us more than just a break from the everyday—it had given us a chance to reconnect with cherished friends, create new memories, and share stories that would inspire others. Driving back along the beach, with the cool evening breeze rustling through the open windows, Marcus turned to me with a smile. "Today was some thing special," he said. I nodded in agreement, feeling the warmth of the sun still lingering on my skin. "It re ally was. Here's to more days like this, illed with laugh ter, friendship, and the simple joys of life. “As the car moved forward, leaving the historic beach town behind but carrying the day's memories with us, I knew that this spring break would be one we would always cher ish—a perfect blend of sun, sand, history, and rekindling an old friendship.”

Until next month from another interesting location!

Yours in travel,

Love, Ingrid
