Hailed as “a brilliant and driven cellist, composer, and conductor” (Huffington Post) whose instrumental playing is de‐scribed as “fire and ice” (NY Times), Dan Barrett is the creator and director of Inter‐national Street Cannibals (ISC). He can be heard on soundtracks of documentaries broadcast by BBC America, PBS, HBO TV and ESPN. In addition to being the onstage cellist in James Joyce’s The Dead on Broad‐way, Barrett concertizes with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York City Opera, Ameri‐can Ballet Theatre, and many others. Johann Sebastian Bach, widely con‐sidered the most gifted of all composers, was born on March 31, 1685, in Eisenach, Thuringia, Ernestine Saxon Duchies (Ger‐many) and died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750. Scholars place the composition of the flute Sonatas in B minor and E minor as most likely to have taken place in the 1730’s, while he was director of the Collegium Mu‐sicum in Leipzig.

Description: Natural shorelines, particularly ocean beaches are dynamic transitional zones which are regularly being altered by the forces of nature—wind, waves and currents. Beyond the obvious ecological importance to diverse array of marine and avian species, naturally functioning shorelines are critical buffers against the dam‐aging effects of storm surge on coastal development. With sea level rise accelerating in response to climate change, the urgency to protect, restore and effectively manage transitional zones for ecological benefits and recreational use is more critical than ever.

Bio: Kevin McAllister’s training and profes‐sional experience in coastal zone manage‐ment (CZM) is substan‐tive and diverse. Kevin holds a Master’s degree in coastal zone manage‐ment where the focus of study was dune management on a developed coastline. Kevin’s professional experience with coastal resources protection spans three decades and exemplified by his work in South Florida implementing major beach/dune restoration projects. Kevin’s current role is a public ad‐vocate for clean water and coastal sustainability.

Torch & Crown Brewing Company Coming to Montauk

Manhattan’s only fully‐functioning brewery, Torch & Crown Brew ing Company (https://www.torchandcrown.com/), is proud to announce that it is making its way to Montauk for the first time this summer! Setting up in the legendary Best Pizza & Dive Bar (https://divebarpizza.com/) in the Hamptons, Torch & Crown Montauk is sure to be a surfer and beach lover’s paradise. Set to debut Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, the new summer hotspot will showcase the best of the Hamptons, providing city‐goers with an essential weekend escape for friends and family.

On the heels of their recent opening at the historic Union Square Pa‐vilion last week, as featured in the The New York Times, Torch & Crown Montauk will be located steps from the beach and just down the road from the iconic Surf Lodge. The new Hamptons location will feature a variety of hand‐crafted drafts that pair perfectly with Best Pizza & Dive Bars specialty pies, including brand‐fa‐vorite Almost Famous, a smooth, bright, aromatic hazy IPA packed with peach and grapefruit notes, and the summer seasonal Share House, an easy‐drinking crisp ale made for summers out east. The surfer‐themed beer garden will also feature a rotating list of live bands and DJs every weekend.

ABOUT TORCH & CROWN BREWING COMPANY: Growing up in the NYC area, founders Joe Correia and John Dantzler didn’t always want to open a brewery. But one night at age 16, fate struck ‐ both tragically had their fake IDs confiscated at a bar in the East Village. Left with no way to buy beer, the two decided they’d make it…

The first batch started with a Mr. Beer homebrew kit, two guys who hadn’t quite read the instructions, and John’s mom coming home to find that kit exploding all over her kitchen. Despite both being grounded for a month, their resolve was undeterred, and the two kept at it. By the time high school graduation rolled around, the two were winning some modest homebrew awards (which they had to send their dads to accept), and a passion had fully been born. On a trip to Ireland, Joe and John formally decided (over a toast of a pint of Guinness) that one day, they’d open their own brewery ‐ cen‐tered around their love of three things: great beer, ambitious creations, and the amazing city of New York.

After 10 years, thousands of trial batches, and a few more boil‐overs, John and Joe have reunited to create Torch & Crown Brewing Company.

40 ~ June 2023 ~ The Montauk Sun

June 2023

There will be a Full Moon on June 4, 2023. June's full moon is commonly known as the Full Strawberry Moon. The Full Strawberry Moon is called this because of the strawberry harvesting season in North America. The Full Strawberry Moon is tied to romance and marital bliss world‐wide, also known as the Lover's Moon. Use this time to work on connections in your life. Show af‐fection to your loved ones. Let yourself be vulner‐able, and it will encourage intimacy in your relationships. Appreciate your love in your life, in partnerships, and the love of life.

There will be a New Moon in Gemini on June 18, 2023. Gemini reveals itself through continuous change and spontaneity. Everyone will feel safe thinking about their feelings and sharing them with others. Everyone may be more talkative and speak more easily. Avoid surgical procedures dur‐ing this time, especially shoulders, arms, hands, and anything vascular.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21) — Happy Birthday, Gemini! Try to plan a weekend getaway to help you to chill out. Cut the ties that will help free you up emotionally. You do not always need the approval of others in your life. Keep your mind clear and live your life for yourself.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — Take deep breaths and loosen up. Learn from your past experiences and mistakes. While your aggressive and assertive ways may have scared off many possible love inter‐ests in the past, a former love will reappear. So tread carefully, but do not be close‐minded.

Leo (July 23 – August 23) — A new career or business opportunity could present itself. Grab the moment, or create your dream opportunities. Ad‐vancement in career and love stems from knowl‐edge and the use of communication.

Virgo (August 24 – September 22) — Creativity is born from emotional releases. Spend more time with those who incite your emotions. Prepare yourself more before jumping into new projects. Remember not to look only in one direction. Keep an open mind and seek out your co‐worker's opin‐ions. Pressure to travel, coming from both work and family, will require careful planning.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) — Try not to be ruled by your emotions and your passionate tempera‐ment. You have a creative nature, and that tends to make you reactive in a temperamental way. Take the time to lis‐ten to your head and not as much to your heart. Other‐wise, you will continue to make your life difficult. Why work so hard if you can work smart instead?

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — You need to re‐structure your life, and in the process, you will decide about a love relationship. Keep your mind clear and live your life for yourself and not only for others.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22) — You have intense energy and need an outlet. Start an exercise reg‐imen. It will do you well. Channel your energy also into creative ventures. You are a very empathetic person, and your friends need you. Let them know you are there for them to give them the support they need.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — You will be busy with career demands. You will handle your new re‐sponsibilities with ease. However, there are critical trends in terms of commitment. Single people around you will seem to be more focused on partnerships and marriage. There seem to be a lot of emotional undertones between you and your partner. Try making more time for one an‐other and resolving communication issues.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — Knowing when to go forward or lay back is critical at work. New management is coming in. Be cautious, and let them direct you. Others may cause hostility, putting them in a bad light. But, on the other hand, you will be deemed a valuable asset as a team player.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — Say what you mean, and do what you say. All eyes are upon you at the office. You have leadership confidence, so others follow your lead. This nature will continue to help you in career advancements. For example, a last‐minute change of routine may lead to a financial opportunity.

Aries (March 21 – April 20) — Consider dramatic ex‐tremes before you relocate or involve yourself in ex‐treme activities. When in doubt, do nothing or go slowly.

Taurus (April 21 May 21) — You have intense en‐ergy. Start an exercise regimen. It will do you good. Channel your energy also into creative ventures. You tend to be very empathetic, and your friends need you. Let them know you are there for them to give them the support they need.

PAUL SNYDER’S JOURNAL

One had two black sea bass. Then I felt a bite and set the hook. The stout conventional rod had a nice bend to it. My two hook rig with light green squid teasers had a couple species hit the spearing baits. The top hook had a blackfish and the bottom had a black sea bass. I had conjured up the blackfish with my thoughts as we passed the boulder. It was a successful drift. As we cruised past Gardiner’s, I mentioned how the largest privately owned island in the U.S. was pur‐chased from Montaukett Chief Wyandanch in 1639 by Lyon Gardiner for a large black dog, a few Dutch blan‐kets and some powder and shot. As we rounded north of Gardiner’s to head west up the sound we passed the “Ruins” which was intended to be Fort Tyler on a 14 acre island known as Gardiner’s Point until the bliz‐zard of 1888 caused it to be unoccupied.

We passed a fleet of boat’s drifting the rips south‐west of Plum Island and headed towards Mattituck. When we got through the Mattituck Jetties and came through the tight channel it opened up to luxury homes mixed with commercial docks. It was a suc‐cessful delivery, fishing trip, shakedown cruise and a new season had begun.

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE...

and are one of the few accessible areas where various native Central American animal and plant species can be observed undisturbed in their natural habitat. At this point I must mention the excellent cuisine and the in‐credible dining room staff; ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen ( Suta, Kadek and Suar just to mention a couple of the stars).

By the way, later up the West Coast, one of HAL’s Culinary Council Members, Celebrity Chef David Burke, came on board and we all had the pleasure of watching him cooking live on MainStage. He trained at the Culi‐nary Institute of America and has been featured on Iron Chef America and Top Chef Masters. Chef Burke, while on board the MS Eurodam, added contemporary flavors and signature recipes to the Pinnacle Grill, an extraor‐dinary restaurant indeed. We had the pleasure of meet‐ing him personally over breakfast one morning at The Lido and then again during the daily morning Coffee Talk with Stephanie Summerville at the Ocean Bar. I knew through Christopher Hewitt that his brother Shawn Hewitt worked for years with Chef David Burke. I am sure you all remember the late Jimmy Hewitt, one of Montauk’s legends and longtime owner of the Shag‐wong Tavern, and his sons Christopher and Shawn. When I asked David Burke about his time with Mon‐tauk’s very own Celebrity Chef Shawn Hewitt (SelRrose) this is what he had to say: https://youtu.be/3xVJeoEfKxs

Another interesting person we got to meet onboard was Fr Edward Pracz, ‘Director Kra‐jowy’, of Stella Maris, Port Chaplain in Gdynia, Poland. It’s true there’s a daily Catholic ( and a non denominal ) church service on board all of HAL’s ships, and my husband, who enjoyed his service, attended daily. Stella Maris ‐ Apostleship of the Sea, is the largest ship‐visiting network in the world.

I loved the Spa and of course the Salon and the beautiful people that work there. With several weeks on any ship one eventually will need either a hair trim and/or a pedicure. But because most guests prefer to get their beautifications done during Sea Days, one better make these reservations in advance. The GreenHouse Spa is a must. Its waters come straight

June is the traditional bridal month. It is Spring at its best. The sun, not to hot, shines on love and peace between our hopeful couple. This poem is written in an “ottava Rima” format. There is no better way to express the highest point of love then in this Italian form of poetry The second poem calls out the month of June.

Bride

Lawrence Spiro (Revised 2023)

Love lays ready her gallant heart to him. He approaches with care and touches her, both now and forever in light or dim.

The winter’s gaze severe and chilled sees cold in a tic of frigid toc. But relief in time will be fulfilled when sweet wet June punches nature’s clock.

Cuckoo its June!

Class Trip Memories

When we were in grade school, the mention of an upcoming class trip meant only one thing and that was no school work for the day. Elementary school children may not appreciate the benefits and learning experience that would occur during a trip that the teacher or grade advisor planned. Thinking back to some of the highlights of my grade school class trips they were easily the ones into New York City which were the best. On separate trips we visited the Amer‐ican Museum of National History and saw dinosaur bones reconstructed to show the actual size of these prehistoric beasts that roamed the earth. We saw the huge glass enclosed scenes of animal wildlife that were donated by President Teddy Roosevelt after many of his African safari trips. The following year our class went to the Hayden Planetarium, which it was called way back until the 1980’s. Founded in 1933 and named after philanthropist, Charles Hayden, it stood until it was closed in 1997 and de‐molished. It is part of the American Museum of Natu‐ral History complex. Then in 2000, the $210 million Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space, containing the new Hayden Plan‐etarium, opened to the public, with Neil deGrasse Tyson as its director. For more information and what is there to see visit: https://www.amnh.org/re‐search/hayden‐planetarium However, my all time fa‐vorite trip was to the State of Liberty because it included a ferry ride to get to the Statue. At the time my sixth grade class went, we were able to climb up to the Crown to view the breathtaking sights of the city and harbor. My mother told me back then that when she went to school the students were able to climb up into the torch before it was closed due to safety precautions and weakening structure prob‐lems. I remember taking pictures with my Brownie Hawkeye camera to capture the Statue, my teacher and my classmate friends, photos that still bring a smile to my face when I browse through old photo al‐bums from those years.

When our children went on school trips, many of them entailed staying overnight or even for five days. There were trips to a nature preserve for environ‐ment education studies located in the Hudson Valley where they studied all forms of nature appreciation. One trip our daughter’s fifth grade class made was to Lancaster County where the oldest Amish settlement is located. Parent chaperones were needed to help the teachers and I quickly signed up for that one since I had never been there. It was a wonderful trip “step‐ping back in time” to see the Amish horse and buggies riding through town. Later we toured an Amish vil‐lage to see the goods they made, crafting skills, their farm equipment and their slower, calmer lifestyle. Our meals were eaten in restaurants that were served “family style” and it was some of the best food we’ve
