The curved waterways and pathways tuate the theatre’s cylindrical form and entice passersby to circulate the architecture. xperience begins with a ramped entrance onto the site. The west island is a garden and picnic area and the east island is where the theatre is located. The southmost island is a large public space with outdoor stage. It is imagined that public events such as rks can take place here. It also works well for hosting private events. The Port Lands Theatre recognizes that program flexibility is key in sustainability. Thus, spaces both interior and exterior are designed with the intention that it can be repurposed if needed. uilding is divided into four towers (ticket booth/restaurant, classrooms, theatre for 200, and theatre for 500) joint by a corridor. The interior is cast with crushed concrete and brick creating a mosaic effect with warm tones ranging from a sand to sienna. Each tower es a load bearing cylinder of varying diameter made of the same crushed materials. A series of beams and truss systems intersect the cylinder at ceiling levels, further solidifying the overall structure.

An enivonmental and structural study for a theatre project

Solar Collector Panels Using solar technology, energy is stored to heat and cool the building. Heat transports from the energy panels to a transfer medium (concrete) to heat the building.

Glass Facade and Concrete Thermal Mass The glass facade allows heat to be stored within the concrete structural walls. This is particularly beneficial for heating the buildings ramps which curve around most of the building’s perimeter.

Moss Roof/Green Roof Moss is a lightweight layer added atop the roof assembly. It aids in increasing thermal performance of storm water retention. Excess water passes through the moss, filtering large debris. The water is then purified and recycled in the building.

How might we design a mobile App for students that meed their need for health, choice/affordability, convenience?

University Context:

Audience:

Food Insecurity on Campus exists at the University of Toronto

Issues:

Students don’t have enough access to healthy and affordable food thereby reducing their choice in fulÞlling their needs. Students have expressed difÞculty in being able to Þnd time in their schedule to either prepare meals in advance or wait in long lines throughout the day.

Task: Survey study groups (see diagrams on right) to see the ways in which their experiences can be bettered. Use design to problem solve.

Solutions Today:

Today, students address these problems by either going for long periods between eating, not eating at all, or eating unhealthy food. Some students carry tupperware at all times in case of ‘free food’ events.

Some use the food bank. UofT Food map currently exists for UofT vendors. Word of Mouth amongst students.

Our primary users are students of the University of Toronto St. George campus. We are trying to address their needs as outlined by our interviews with various students across campus and are proposing a solution that would work alongside Food Services.

Innovative Solution:

This solution would allow for the audience to interact with food and the existing food lanscapre in a way that has not been offered before. This would centralize all of the available food options within a speciÞc radius, provide feedback strictly by members of a similar audience (UofT students), and have measures in place that will address their accesibility needs. In turn, this will allow them to have more knowledge about their food choices including increased trust in the food they are purchasing, accessing the lowest costs foods that are currently available, and the convenience of being able to look at this from wherever they are.

The idea is to develop an app with a map of all the food vendors such as UofT Cafeterias/Locations, Food Trucks, or Private Vendors in the area. The app would allow users to Þlter by dietary restriction. Additionally, there would be information about some boundaries in accessing food at each particular location that would be easily accessible by the user. A crucial part of this app would include the ability for users to provide honest feedback to help generate trust amongst the userbase. Additionally, information for students who have Þnancial barriers about food banks and other speciÞc information would be included.

INSTITUTIONAL CEMETERY

In coordination with the Port Lands 2024 project, the Port Lands Theatre imagines pedestrian and row friendly pathways throughout the site. As such, the land is divided into three islands which also maximizes waterfront views.

The curved waterways and pathways accentuate the theatre’s cylindrical form and entice passersby to circulate the architecture.

Conversation Theory: Precedent and Application Live Information + Broadcasting involves participatory learning and emotional value which is benefitial to understanding and storing information

• Gordon Pask’s 1975 theory became a framework for cybernetics. It organized the ways in which A, man, and B, machine, can learn from one another (see diagram above).

This project applies the Conversation Theory model to the Daniels Faculty Building in the hopes that the new architecture, its curricula, and syllabi become responsive to the wellness of its users.

In analyzing Comic Con, we see information projected by objects (left), architecture (bottom) and through costume particpation (Right).

How can these factors maximize our learning?

This thesis explores empathy through augmented and virtual reality architecture. It translates the statistics from the Daniels Health and Wellbeing Report into AR/VR installations. While statistics flatten the student experience, the installations give students the opportunity to experience the dataset and empathize with their peers. With isolation from schools coming to a close due to the pandemic, I saw it necessary to create an opporunity for students to better understand how their peers are doing.
