REVIEW

Rising to the occasion: Sit-to-Stand desks By Alison Budge | Images Supplied

S

it-to-stand desks are aimed at those who want to be more proactive in preventing long-term body damage caused by sitting for too long, or people with back problems who physically can’t sit for too long. These desks are placed on top of existing desks, and are altered by various mechanisms between the correct height for standing and the correct height for sitting, taking into account the height of the worker.

The Ergotron WorkFit-S

The ErgotronWorkFit-S is a top of the range sit-to-stand deskthat is super easy to adjust between sitting and standing heights. The setup of the desk was quick, by clamping it onto the front of an existing desk, then adjusting the heights of the keyboard tray and the screen. Screens separate to laptops need to be removed from their stands and screwed into the WorkFit-S stand, using existing holes in both. This sitto-stand desk enables adjusting of the screen-to-keyboard distance to get the user’s posture right, which is an easy slide of the screen down within a groove. Light but bulky, the WorkFitSprotrudes from the front of the desk; this is only an issue if your office space is limited. The keyboard and mouse tray angle relative to the body can be adjusted by simply tilting the tray, to ensure a ‘downward slope’ from the elbow to the wrist to the fingers. This prevents wrist strain and feels so natural once it is at the right angle. There are a number of accessories available. Summary: top of the range, very easy adjustment of multiple aspects of the desk 6 | aha MOMENTS!

The Ergotron WorkFit-T

The simplest set up,just put it on top of your desk and you’re good to go! The WorkFit-T moves straight up and down, and thus stays within the footprint of the existing desk making it a very neat set up. The surface is large enough to support a big screen, mouse pad, and documents while working. Although a big and heavy desk to carry around, it is verystable through all range of levels and is as sturdy any regular desktop. The height is easily adjustedby squeezing the two handles on either side

of the desk, and the desk rises up to the required position. The desk has an upper surface for a screen and documents, and a lower keyboard and mouse tray; the level of the keyboard tray relative to the desktop surface is not adjustable, it is fixed. Once the Ergotron WorkFit-T is in the lowest position for seated working, the effective height of the desktop is raised as a result of the structure. This potentially means that chair height needs to be raised and a foot box used for the “vertically challenged”! Summary: large, neat and stable, with enough space for all aspects of working.

The WorkEz

This is an entry level sit-to-stand desk, with the most basic manoeuvrability. It is adjusted to hold a laptop at the correct height and angle for standing, and is simply lifted out of the way when sitting. An additional keyboard stand is available for setups of a separate screen and keyboard. The angles of the legs are adjusted manually to ensure correct posture when standing to work. And one more thing? The WorkEz is portable! Being light and folding completely flat, it can easily be packed in a cabin carry-on suitcase for business people that travel a lot, and prefer to stand at their destination. People with back problems who already take strain from sitting on flights can easily set up the desk at their destination to relieve the pain for a few hours. It can also be adapted to provide a handy stand while working from a bed.

Summary: fantastic portability, adaptable to many working positions, entry level.

Alison trialled three different sit-to-stand desks supplied by ErgonomicsDirect. Read her in-depth reviews and her experience in transitioning to standing and working in aha Moment’s blog www.momentsmagonline.com

Taking a stand for your health

E

By Jayson Chin and Piet Nel | Images Supplied

rgonomics is the study of how your body interacts with the environment when you perform a task or activity. Office ergonomics focuses on the arrangement of your workstation to fit your specific needs, and includes the choice and placement of the desk, computer monitor, keyboard and mouse, and chair. With the development of technology, many of us have become office- and deskbound. Computing has become a

significant part of daily work activity and the average working adult spends 50% - 70% of the day sitting at work. It is common knowledge that smoking is bad for your health, but research has found that sitting is the new smoking and may be just as harmful to your health. Every hour of sitting cuts about 22 minutes from your life expectancy. By contrast, it is estimated that smokers shorten their lives by approximately 11 minutes per cigarette.

The benef i ts of standing while working Working while standing instead of sitting has gained popularity in recent years.Research has shown that some of the potentialbenefits of standing are: • Improving the functioning of your digestive system. • Reducing muscle tension and strain, especially on your neck and lower back.

• • •

Standing burns more calories than sitting and can lead to weight loss. Standing can reduce mortality rate. Standing can reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular events, high blood pressure, blood clots, depression and other ailments. aha MOMENTS! | 7

Sit straight so that your back is firmly supported by the chair’s backrest. Having your feet firmly supported will make it easier for you to push yourself back into the chair and make full use of the support that the backrest offers

It is both important and concerning to note that regular exercise does not reverse the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

How to ensure a good p osture while sitt ing Unfortunately, it is sometimes not possible for everyone to stand at work, and if so, it’s important to address your ergonomic set-up to improve your posture and reduce conditions associated with long hours spent in a sustained position. The main challenge is normally that the desk height is fixed, so you need to work around this fixed height.Below are some basic points to consider for your workstation, how many can you accomplish? 1.

Adjust the height of your chair so that your feet are flat on the ground.(You might need a footrest, especially if you are “vertically challenged”).

2.

Attempt to have a space of about four fingers wide between the front of your seat base and the back of your bent knees when sitting.

3.

The angle of your knees should be around 90°.

4.

Sit straight so that your back is firmly supported by the chair’s backrest. Having your feet firmly supported will make it easier for you to push yourself back into the chair and make full use of the support that the backrest offers.

5.

Your elbows should be at around a 90° angle and, if possible, at desk height.

6.

Support your arms on the desk when working with the keyboard or mouse.

7.

The top of the monitor should be positioned roughly in line with your eye level.

8.

The distance between your eyes and the monitor should be around 60cm – roughly an arm’s length away.

8 | aha MOMENTS!

Awareness of your setup is an important start toimproving your ergonomics at work. Don’t be scared to keep on changing and adjusting to get to the optimal setup where you are both correct and comfortable.

Adv ice and exercises When deskbound, the following could also make a difference • Avoid being in one position for longer than 60 - 90 minutes at a time. • Stand up and move around regularly. • Do regular stretches behind your desk. • Schedule a check-in with yourself monthly, are you still adhering to the ergonomic guidelines?

With only a bit of effort and awareness, it is possible to create a working environment that is healthy, comfortable and productive. Invest in yourself, you are worth it!

Jayson Chin has been practicing as an Orthotist Prosthetist for almost 20 years and Piet Nelqualified and worked as a Physiotherapist. Both have been involved in the establishment of Ergonomicsdirect, a division of Medsport that specialises in office ergonomic. They are firm believers of the benefits of standing or alternating between sitting and standing, and both have been making use of standing workstations for the last 2 years, sometimes going through a day without sitting at all www.ergonomicsdirect.co.za

wo tourism practitioners from aha Lesedi, Phelisa Matyolo and Ziyanda Mtshali were among a group of 20 trainees who were selected to partake in the Tourism Department’s Mandarin programme. The trainees were selected from establishments frequented by the growing number of Chinese tourists visiting South Africa, an estimated 58 000 tourists in the first half of 2016, according to the Chinese Embassy.

14 | aha MOMENTS!

The programme’s inception was in 2013 when the South African government and the People’s Republic of China signed an agreement to cooperate within the tourism sector, three years on the programme has produced the first 20 tourism practitioners who are now fluent in Mandarin, achieving an impressive pass rate of 88%. The aha Lesedi tourism practitioners, Ziyanda Mtshali and Phelisa Matyolo and were the top two in their class, with respective results of 96.35% and 96.3%.

Neil Bald, aha Hotels & Lodges CEO lauded the Department of Tourism, the Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre including all stakeholders involved for the successful implementation of this programme, hailing it as a milestone for the sector. aha Hotels & Lodges Group HR Manager, Ms. Nondumiso Mngadi elaborates that the company continuously seeks out opportunities to develop and empower its employees and is extremely proud of the trainees’ accomplishment.

“They beam with pride as they relate their experiences, explaining how daunting the programme was at first and how they doubted they would make it through the training, being introduced to a new language that seemed so difficult to grasp.”

“The company continuously seeks out opportunities to develop and empower its employees and is extremely proud of the trainees’ accomplishment.”

Phelisa, began her career at aha Lesedi in November 2008 as a dancer; through hard work and determination, she’s now an Assistant Cultural Manager, tour guide and still an active dancer. Ziyanda started as a dancer in 2012 and is currently a tour guide and dancer, with ambitions of being in charge of marketing for aha Lesedi in the near future. They beam with pride as they relate their experiences, explaining how daunting the programme was at first and how they doubted they would make it through the training, being introduced to a new language that seemed so difficult to grasp. The gruelling 3 months programme entailed reading, writing and speaking with situational role playing sessions. Mandarin is spoken by an estimated 100 million people, mainly in the People’s Republic of China; one of South Africa’s largest trading partners. aha MOMENTS! | 15

The multi-talented

Jonathan Boynton-Lee The former runway fashion model and multi awardwinning TV personality has taken South African television screens by a storm and is never looking back. I get a glimpse into his busy work schedule and private life. 16 | aha MOMENTS!

W

e meet in his carefree but kept apartment in the North of Johannesburg and he is his usual calm self. I am immediately in awe as we begin our conversation; he is kind and down-to-earth. Rise to fame Boynton-Lee entered the limelight of the South African entertainment industry in 2012 after winning the Top Billing Presenter Search. After winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, he became the first person in the world to win two prime time reality shows. Before he joined Top Billing Jonathan was already making it big in TV and film as an actor, writer and a director. He started out writing, directing and acting for

EXCLUSIVE theatre under the tutelage of Andrew Buckland and Reza de Wet. He made the big step to film when a script he wrote for the Quickies film festival was chosen from over 5000 applicants. The script formed part of a production that screened in art cinemas around the country. It is after joining the top South African lifestyle showTop Billing on SABC3 that his career took an even more interesting turn. “Top Billing really put me in the public eye, but I had been in the industry for many years. Not many people know I was directing before, I had just won a Loerie award and my first feature film had also picked up an award overseas . Most people also don’t know I started out acting in theatre. I miss it and I would love to go back.” he admits. Being so popular and winning the hearts of many South Africans with his good looks, one would wonder how celebrity life might have changed him. He says being a celebrity has affected him only in positive ways, “I have not experienced any awkward fan moments. The fans have always been amazing and I’m so thankful for them.” I would say Jonathan is the King of Reality Television; he is the games master for Tropika Island of Treasure, with Minnie Dlamini as host. The show is a reality competition airing on SABC3 whereby South African celebrities are paired up with Tropika consumers, and challenge each other for R1 million.

Family and charities To Jonathan, family is something he holds dear to his heart. His adoptive parents gave him such an amazing life. The love and support he received from his parents has inspired him to want to adopt one day. This high achiever makes it his mission to spend as much time as possible with his family. With a tight schedule such as travelling with the Top Billing crew, appearances as the brand ambassador for many top

brands, tv presenting, and working on his films, it is unbelievable that he still finds the balance and spends time with his family more often. “I enjoy spending quality time with my family, my nephew and niece, sister and my parents. If I’m not travelling I make sure I see them every week.” The family orientated man is passionate about charity work. Among other charities, he spends time and helps raise awareness and funds for Princess Alice adoption home and the Reach for a Dream Foundation. Jonathan is also passionate about animals and their conservation. He can often be found free diving with his favourite animals, sharks, to create awareness for their conservation.

Awards Our conversation then moved on to all his awards and nominations, he explained how grateful he was that a lot of these were a result of his fans recognition. “It’s really overwhelming to receive awards for doing what you love. I was not expecting these awards, the ones that were really special to me are those where the public decide.” Jonathan was Cosmopolitan’s sexiest man 2014, an SA Style award winner, was a 2015 ANN7 South African of the Year nominee (trendsetting celebrity), the face of Joop! Homme SA for 2016, and You Spectacular award winner for Sexiest man and Favourite TV presenter 2015, amongst others. As a multi-talented film maker, he won a Loerie award for his commercials directing, and following its world premiere, his feature film directorial debut, Jozi Kings, was nominated for Best Action Film and Best Screenplay at the Nollywood Film Critics Awards in Los Angeles, subsequently winning the award for Best Film. For his achievements, Jonathan is very grateful to his parents who raised him as they are always supportive. “I get the motivation to work hard and follow my dreams from my family because I always want to make them proud. They have raised me with so much love, and everything I do is for them.” Jonathan has not abandoned his first love which is film making. He shared that he is currently working on two film productions, and that he is also writing a movie. “A horror movie I acted in is currently being distributed in the States. Right now I’m developing an awesome story with some of the most talented people in the South African film industry.” Having expressed great passion for film, I was however curious to know what else would Jonathan do if it is not the magic of movies. “To be honest I can’t imagine doing anything else. I knew from when I was young that it’s what I wanted to do.”, says Jonathan. aha MOMENTS! | 17

EXCLUSIVE

18 | aha MOMENTS!

EXCLUSIVE

“The film and TV world is not as glamorous as it looks. Do it because you love it,” says the man of the moment! Travel As a Top Billing presenter, he always finds himself on the road travelling the world for this luxury and lifestyle show. He’s travelled the world and shared the screen with the likes of Richard Branson, Michael Buble, Channing Tatum, Harry Styles, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cameron Diaz, Hugh Jackman, Emily Blunt, Idris Elba, and Ana Wintour, to name a few.

What has been his favourite travel destination so far? “There are just too many to mention. However there is a beautiful island off the coast of Mozambique called Quilalea, which is the closest to paradise I have ever been. I love the energy of the big cities, London, New York, Paris. I always find myself drawn to the Drakensberg. I have been going there for over 30 years so it feels like I kind of grew up in the mountains. Some of my most special memories are from there.” It was difficult for Jonathan to pick the one destination he considers the most special of them all. However, for a man who has travelled the world like he does, he admits to finding his home country South Africa, the most beautiful country in the world.

Words of Wisdom In an industry characterised by flashy cars and a luxurious lifestyle, Jonathan feels that most celebrities are just selling illusions, and it’s easy to get swept up in it all and become involved for the wrong reasons. Like any other career, always put passion in your craft. “Don’t get into this industry for money or fame. The film and TV world is not as glamorous as it looks. Do it because you love it, because you can’t imagine doing anything else,” says the man of the moment!

The Cape Town based comedian, designer, illustrator and actress Julia Anastopoulos popularly known as Suzelle, talks to us about her rise to stardom from her hit YouTube channel, Suzelle DIY.

S

he started the channel in 2014 sharing her do-it yourself tips, and today her sense of humour, fun and quirky personality has gained the channel over 100 000 subscribers. With her most popular DIY video being “How to make a braai pie”. Julia plays an Afrikaans woman Suzelle, along with her friend Marianne who occasionally pops in the videos. The same year Suzelle launched the channel, she received an award for South Africa’s favourite online celebrity from Channel24, and subsequently came top in the “Superbalist 100”, the definitive list of young “doers, makers, movers and shakers” responsible for shaping the face of contemporary youth culture in South Africa. Suzelle has collaborated with many brands such as Takealot, an online retailer and created four videos for the brand; she was recently part of the panel and mentors of Cellc Break the net reality show competition. She does not only limit herself to DIY but explores a sense of adventurous spirit in her, you can get tips of what to do while you are on holidays as she sometimes shares safari tips. 26 | aha MOMENTS!

Before becoming an internet sensation, Julia was an award winning illustrator and designer who created hand-drawn illustrations on the walls and windows of a few My CiTi Bus stations.

With her typical DIY intelligence, we chat to Julia about Suzelle Who is Suzelle DIY? How would you describe her? Suzelle is a small town girl with a great passion for creativity. She loves DIY, braaing, dinner parties and going out for koffies with her best friend, Marianne. She has a YouTube channel called Suzelle DIY. As Suzelle portrays a typical Afrikaans woman, is Julia Afrikaans and how does she differ from Suzelle? No as a matter of fact I am a real cultural mix! My Dad is Greek, my mom is half Afrikaans and I went to an English school. Although I

I love cooking, making things and I am actually very good at DIY. Marianne is also one of my real life best friends. am not quite as colourful has Suzelle (and I definitely don’t wear my hair in an elaborate up-style everyday) we do have many similarities. I love cooking, making things and I am actually very good at DIY. Marianne is also one of my real life best friends. What inspired you to start the YouTube channel Suzelle DIY and How did you identify the need for your DIY tips and how to’s to be shared with the online audience? In 2014 my fiancé and I were looking for something to do outside of our commercial work and we were working on a script for a movie with a very similar character to Suzelle. As a way to develop the idea and build the character, we decided to start a Youtube channel. We were really just experimenting and having fun with it in the beginning - we loved the idea of DIY because you find such interesting characters on YouTube giving online DIY tutorials. We thought it would be so wonderful for an audience to be searching for DIY tips and find Suzelle. With the DIY videos you have done so far, which one did you have fun most while shooting? Definitely the first video we shot with Marianne. “How to get fluff of your jersey.” We had no idea what to expect and she brought this wonderfully weird, silent character to the table. We were in hysterics. How do you generate ideas for your DIY videos? We have an amazing team at Sketchbook Studios and we are constantly researching good ideas, tips and tricks. We are often watching other videos for inspiration and we are on Pinterest a lot. We will often try and do things that are trending, or we will research specific projects if we are working with a collaborator. We like to make sure that the DIY ideas are fun and useful.

You also wrote a book, Suzelle DIY, How is it performing in the market? In South Africa, where do we find the book? The book has been very successful! It was quite a challenge to take

our DIY video format and translate it into written form without losing the essence of Suzelle. But it really seemed to work and it became a bestseller last year. It is available online, on our website, suzellediy. com and in most book stores. We also just released a DIYary, a creative do-it-yourself diary which is also now available online and in stores nationwide. As Julia, you also work as a designer, tell us about your design work. Yes I have also worked as a designer and an illustrator in many fields including theatre and set design, children’s books and mural making. I did a series of large printed illustrate murals for the City of Cape Town which can be found at the Civic centre and in Thibault square. I absolutely love drawing and illustrating - but Suzelle has become quite full-on! So I am focusing more on the acting side for now. Your videos were aired on TV (Comedy Central) How did you feel about that? Being on Comedy central has been fantastic - not only for the Suzelle DIY brand but for me, as a comedic actress. It is so wonderful to get that kind of recognition, and our Suzelle audience has grown exponentially as a result. Do we perhaps in the near future see you having your on TV programme? Yes there are definitely a few things in the pipeline! We are looking to make a completely different Comedy TV series next year with a completely new character… so watch this space! Can we expect Mr Suzelle DIY to be joining in your show soon? I don’t think so… I think Suzelle is still looking for love. www.suzellediy.co.za aha MOMENTS! | 27

THE HAT MAN The best times in life are unplanned, just ask the South African born, New York based milliner, Albertus Swanepoel.

T

he best times in life are unplanned, just ask the South African born, New York based milliner, Albertus Swanepoel. Albertus moved to the Big Apple at about age 30, a move that was unplanned! “I came on vacation to New York, got a job offer on my third day here from a fellow South African who had a clothing company here unbeknownst and stayed.” he says, his true desire was to live in Paris but the job offer made him stay in New York. Before becoming “The hat man”, Albertus started off as an acclaimed fashion designer here in South Africa. He studied in the various fields of fine art such as graphic design, fashion and millinery. His love for the arts was influenced by his father who was an aspiring actor and took Albertus to see many black and white

movies, the opera (which he loves) and plays. The amazing actors “shaped my mind and fantasy world for the later years”, he says. Albertus is also inspired by interior design and architecture. Shifting to millinery was also unplanned. “I always wanted to be a rock n’ roll star, but life just didn’t work out that way”, he says. A song by Dawid Kramer opening with “Ag God man, life is so hard” has great meaning for him as he has had to work hard for everything he has achieved. When he first moved to New York, Albertus had multiple jobs in order to making a living. Before making hats, he had a stint making gloves but that meant loss of business in summer so he became innovative and learned how to make hats, that was about 22 years ago, under Janine Galimard’s guidance.

For his design process, Alberts says, “I live a little in my head.”, and he takes time to think about a hat he wants to make. He continues, “The fabric, image or shape might start the process”. He challenges himself with every new collection by mixing materials that may seem to clash with the ? Albertus always takes into consideration the principles of graphic design when constructing a hat such as proportion, texture, and positive or negative space. Albertus emphasises that what is more important is “whether the hat is wearable, desirable and current.” He is certain that millinery is his final career shift as he is passionate about his craft. He contends that the fashion industry is competitive, and he does not “have another 15 years” to start all over again. Getting into fashion requires capital and times have changed- back in the day, things were “easy”, Albertus points out. In today’s world, the pace is faster, the competition tough, and getting exposure is difficult, and so he believes it would be difficult for him to compete with existing shoe and bag companies and still receive the same recognition he enjoys now.. He says he enjoys making hats for men and women but believes there is “more to say with men’s hats than with women’s.” Apparently, men are more particular and want more distinct looks than his private female clients. How interesting! As a New Yorker, he considers the city to be the best in the world, but it’s also “very tough” he points out, that he wants his next move to be to Tokyo, or Krugar National Park…he clearly still loves home! Having lived in Manhattan for 27 years now, Albertus has developed his own little routine. He loves how the city is always changing so there is not time for complacency therefore it is important to stay relevant and adjust to the changes “The city challenges you to face yourself”, he says, and so life is not always easy, even more so for the entrepreneurs. Through it all, Albertus maintains that he loves his work, continues to work hard, and he looks forward to what each new day brings with it. Opera being one of his “greatest loves”, he went to see Anna Netrebko in “Manon Lescaut this past November at the Metropolitan Opera and still experiences the euphoria just thinking about it. He enjoys the “larger than life aspect of operathe tragedies, sets, costumes and music coming together” and the fact that the actors only have one chance to deliver the best performance possible, to him this is not only creativity, but somewhat a way of life, he believes this also applies for him being a designer. Albertus also enjoys a night out and walks but nothing beats being home in bed, with his cat next him and watching television. Here are some of his favourite places: Neue Gallery and MOMA museums; dining at Indochine, Raoul’s, City Bakery, Balthazar and Le Parisien, and drinking at Temple Bar; not forgetting The Metropolitan Opera of course and shopping at Barneys New York, or his favourite store - de Vera, Dover Street Market, ABC Home, the home floor of Bergdorf Goodman, Odin New York (for men), If Boutique and John Derian. Having worked with some of the world’s best designers such as Marc Jacobs and Carolina Herrera Albertus’ work has been published in noteworthy publications, and worn by superstars such as Justin Bieber and Jennifer Aniston. He also has a few awards to his name and therefore feels content as he has been “pleasantly surprised” by all that he has achieved in his career , especially since he does not have a PR agency. This ensures he works a bit harder than most, but hey, it has paid off! Being the first runner-up in the Vogue/CFDDA Fashion Fund Competition in 2008 is the ultimate highlight for him as it was the turning point in his career, it placed him on the world stage.

Another notable highlight was collaborating with Target in 2010 and guess who made that happen…ANNA WINTOUR! Editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine since 1988 and one of the worlds most revered fashion influencers. When it comes to possibly having an entirely exclusive Albertus Swanepoel collection, the hat man says he doesn’t see that happening. He recalls “a rather disastrous stint doing a fashion collection in South Africa a few years ago”, when his clothes were said to be “too plain for the market”! Even though he has entertained the idea, he reiterates that it is costly and quite frankly, “do we really need another version of a white shirt?”, he asks. What’s next for the hat fundi? Well, more ‘head turning’ hats of course! He is “THE HAT MAN” after all.

As a New Yorker, Albertus considers the city to be the best in the world, but it’s also “very tough”.

Getting

suited

with KH Suits and Designs Tell me about clientele, any public figures you have designed for so far? So far our KH clients have been merely students who share a love for good, high quality, distinctive, classy fashionable suits and Paul Mervas has tailored for well-known people such as Miss Mahalia Buchanan and Mpendulo Mhlanga. So, the come up is fairly promising

By Dineo Motloutsi | images © Supplied

Like most professions, tailors have a speciality whether it be as broad as Italian or English. We learn more about suits as the Braamfontein based young entrepreneurs Jason and Kealobogile enlighten us about their business. Who is KH Designs? KH Suits and Designs is a young, vibrant image consulting company which was established in 2016 by Phakamani Jason Malaza and KealobogileMalao. It started out as a mere hobby for Keolebogile Malao in 2014 then as we got to know each other through soccer and school we joined heads. We are merely two young gifted and black former University of Pretoria students who share love for fashion and individual excellence. How would you describe your fashion style? Well, we can say that it’s our modern era’s definition of classic vintage clothing. What keeps you inspired, what is it that you are passionate about? Change is an endless process that we can never comprehend nor limit. So our desire to be part of something new and be part of the group to change catalyst is what inspires us and drives us forward. 36 | aha MOMENTS!

What motivated you to pursue fashion design business? Well we love fashion, setting trends and being part of the sauce. So with that in mind and endless visits to the Pretoria social market we thus embarked on this journey. Did you always know that you wanted pursue fashion as a career when you were younger? No we did not. When we were both young, we were into pursuing and establishing our soccer careers. As we aged and matured we then ventured into this industry. For the time you have been in the fashion design industry, what kind of challenges do you encounter while growing your business? The biggest challenge is getting access to the market and just getting your company’s work out there. This industry is very competitive and most people are very loyal to their brands. So, getting ourselves out there and establishing the levels of trust with high end clients doesn’t come easy. It is challenging. And your fabric, what kind of material do you use? We were using cashmere but since we collaborated with Paul Mervas’s Image consulting firm we have been dealing with Chinese and Italian material. Fashion trends come and go, do you perhaps consider this factor, when designing suits for your clients? As an image consulting firm or a mere designer you should always consider fashion trends. Our day to day clients differ of which that means that they’ll share different tastes. Other clients are loyal to one design regardless of the trend and others want to keep up with current trends. Tell us about your team, are they fashion designers? Well ever since we’ve started working with Paul it’s a team of three. Lebo handles all the formal business staff for KH Suits,

or two accent pieces per outfit. The lapel, cuff links, watch and pocket square combo is a no no. Over doing it makes you look clueless and uncultured. 5. If you want to make a statement and be relevant, choose a burgundy or green suit rather than your tradition navy or grey suit. Pay attention to your crowd, new styles take time to be socially acceptable. 6. For young entrepreneurs, exposed ankles can make for a breezy and stylish modern look. One key note is your target audience. 6. You’ll never go wrong with the traditional; belt-matches-shoes combination 7. A good suit isn’t cheap; making a good first impression is invaluable. Jason handles the marketing and client acquisition stuff for both companies and then Paul deals with the design, tailoring and image consulting for both ventures and his company’s formal logistics. What should one look for when choosing a suit? Are there any basic requirements when choosing good suit? Well we all have a list of traits that our perfect lifelong partner or short term girlfriend or boyfriend should have, this also applies when picking the perfect suit. Look at the following when choosing a suit: - The lapel roll -The turn back on the jacket collar - The fabric/cloth

- The sleeve - The fit - Does the suit follow your body contours (is the suit half lined or unlined)? Got any top fashion tips that you would like to share? 1. Don’t wear a lapel, pocket square and a tie. If you have a tie on, have just a lapel or pocket square on or have no time on and just your pocket square. 2. Always go slim! 3. When it comes to the fit, shoulders are key and will make or break your suit. 4. Accessories inject personality and can be a fruitful conversation starter. Limit it to one

Sometimes the price matches the quality but it does not dwell well with your persona! What advice would you give someone who wants to get into the fashion design business? Nothing comes easy in life but investing in yourself is the best thing you can ever do for yourself. Follow your dreams but substantiate your pursuit with a good quality education. Dare to be different and break away from the shackles of the status-quo.

FINANCE

BOLTHOLE or EXPENSIVE

BLACK HOLE? It is that time of the year that we start yearning for our next holiday, or perhaps even make enquiries about holiday home bookings for December. A second home (or holiday bolthole, as it is also known), has a ring of having financially “arrived”, but many have been caught in the trap of financial overexposure. By Brigitte Jones | Image Supplied

your working life may ease retiring there one day. The average property capital appreciation in these places may also prove to be better, but there are no guarantees in this uncertain market.

considerations before buying a second home: 1.

Your current debt levels, and ability to service them. Unless you can pay for the holiday house in cash, it will need to be financed. The bank will require a deposit, and will apply the same affordability test as with any other financing. They will also likely disregard potential rent income from letting out the property from your affordability calculations as this is not guaranteed. In other words – any letting income generated should be considered a bonus and not be a crucial part of the financing of the property.

2.

Do you want to return to the same place over and over? The cost of your holidays will skyrocket if your holiday home stands vacant when you holiday elsewhere.

3.

Can you drive there on the weekends? A 14-hour drive will mean that you visit the house perhaps once ayear. In several coastal villages in South Africa, many beautiful homes stand empty for much of the year because of distance.

4.

With the rise of sites like Airbnb.com, some consider a holiday house to be an income generator. But consider these costs: Commission to the website / rental agent (normally a % of revenue) Cleaning, pool and garden maintenance, handyman, plumbers, electricians. Cost of replacement of broken and damaged items – when a house is let out, things get damaged and wear out more frequently.

• • •

5. Most bookings are at peak season, when you are on holiday. Only renting the house out off peak is unlikely to bring in significant returns. alternative thoughts on owning a holiday home: 1.

The house is bought as an ultimate retirement home to get your foot onto the property ladder early in a place that you ultimately want to retire to. To pay off the property whilst you are still working may be a good long term investment decision, and will mean that on retirement, your primary residence sale proceeds will boost your retirement capital as it is not needed to buy a retirement property. Often, expensive holiday locations (Knysna, Plett, Hermanus) are also popular retirement locations, and buying into these towns early on in

2.

Stress-free holidays. Many couples buy their own holiday home close to relatives, for a private holiday that is also close to family. Staying in your mother-in-law’s house is not always a holiday. It may be worth buying your own place close by.

3.

Holiday homes do not have to be huge villas by the sea. Extra guests can increase your work load as ‘host’. Consider a humble cottage in a Karoo town, with enough bedrooms for your immediate family. Rent a big house when an occasion requires a bigger get together.

4.

Bargains can be found with patience and research – holiday homes may be on the market from sellers who are over extended and need to urgently sell property.

BASE your FINAL decision on the following: 1.

Can you afford to pay for the property and maintain your lifestyle?

2.

Is the price paid for it reasonable, and at or below market value, to ensure capital appreciation over time?

3.

Are you close enough to the property to enjoy it and make use of it?

The RECENTLY LAUNCHED

LEXUS IS By Bernard Hellberg | Images © LEXUS SOUTH AFRICA

In a sea of mediocrity, the Lexus IS has been a beacon of serenity throughout its four-generation lifetime. BERNIE HELLBERG experienced the IS post a mild upgrade.

T

he Lexus IS is a trend setter, it has always been. Since the first car arrived in South Africa in the previous century. If ever there has been a cutting edge to automotive design, the IS was born on it. And it seems to just get better over time. For the 2017 model year, Lexus has applied an ever so subtle layer of evolution to the exterior and interior of the car, to help it maintain its momentum against a competitive set of compact luxury sedans. EVOLVED EXTERIOR The entire front end of the IS has been transformed by new headlamp clusters, an even more aggressive bumper with large air intakes, and a stunning new dynamic interpretation of the Lexus spindle grille – which features a stunning new three-dimensional F-pattern design on the range-topping F Sport version. Lexus did not leave the updating there, however. The bonnet has been reshaped and now extends more purposefully from the grille rearward. The new design LED headlights appear to be sunken, yet clearer and more bespoke, mirroring the L-shaped design of the daytime running lights. E and EX grade models have a single LED low/high beam headlamp and bulb-type turn-signal lamp, while the F Sport has a three-lamp low-beam system and separate LED high-beam lamps as well as LED signal lamps. 44 | aha MOMENTS!

The IS exterior evolution is rounded off by redesigned rear LED combination lamps on all grades. TWO ENGINES, THREE GRADES The 2017 IS model line-up keeps the current grade walk that comprises the IS 200t E (R601,900 – not driven at launch) and EX (R659,100), and the mighty and meaty IS 350 F Sport which could be yours for R728,800. Introduced in late 2015, the IS 200t EX is, in my mind at least, the model to want in the range. Its super eager 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged, four-cylinder engine – that first appeared on the NX SUV in early 2014 – is an example of Lexus’ skill of combining sensible power and performance elasticity. Although it has 180 kW and 350 Nm ready to be sent to the rear wheels at a moment’s notice, the IS 200t is as composed as they come. And it’s frugal too, thanks to Variable Valve Timing intelligent – Wide (VVTi-W) that switches the engine between the Otto and Atkinson combustion cycles to maximise efficiency. The IS 200t comes equipped exclusively with the eight-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission with steeringmounted paddle shifters. If unbridled power is the requirement, the IS 350 F Sport is the only choice. It develops a staggering 233 kW and up to 378 Nm of torque from its naturally-aspirated 3.5-litre V6, and sends this power to the road via an eight-speed SPDS automatic transmission.

DRIVE

“IS interior upgrades are subtle, yet significant.”

INTERIOR ENHANCED IS interior upgrades are subtle, yet significant. Most prominent among these changes is the upgrading of the infotainment system screen from 7” to 10.3” on the EX and F Sport grades. This new monitor has not only increased in size, it is a completely new high-resolution monitor that provides a larger, and clearer image of the multimedia system’s various functions. For the EX and F Sport, Lexus brought

back the ‘Enter’ button to improve userfriendliness of the remote touch interface. The Drive Mode selector on the F Sport is also able to be customised, and a new instrument cluster on all of the models adds a sense of luxury and refinement to the driver interface experience. Newer high-quality materials, contrast stitching, and a general ergonomic improvement to many dashboard functions complete the interior transformation.

LAST WORD Driving the new IS reminded me just how sporty this Lexus truly is. Chassis and steering enhancements aside – and they are significant – the IS is one of the most composed driving machines around. Whether you’re piloting the 2.0-litre or the 3.5-litre V6 beast, the driving experience is rewarding and precise. Beneath the surface, the IS remains a great option for enthusiastic drivers, with a commendable balance between ride and handling. And the interior, though not perhaps quite as lavish as an Audi A4 or Mercedes-Benz C-Class, still feels genuinely premium and built with the kind of perfection that Lexus is renowned for. aha MOMENTS! | 45

collected his work. The affectionate artist’s work is inspired by deep contemplation and a reverence of his subject matter. His body of work explores the childhood memoirs, reflections, and memories of his practice as both an artist and art educator. He uses the portrait as a medium or model of portrayal to finding peace and harmony in his practice. His work has been exhibited locally and noteworthy International

Chepape collaborated on a project with the legendary South African artist William Kentridge in 2015. Titled “The Heroines of Southern Africa” was his solo exhibition for four consecutive years held at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. He won an Art Across Oceans Residency for 2016, which took place in Johannesburg and Chicago, the Visual Arts award 2016 of ImpACT Awards, an annual ceremony to honouring young artists and businesses that have reached a notable achievement in their careers. “Awards are merely a recognition of one’s work and contribution to the industry one finds himself or herself in. My reaction has always been that of an ambassadorial being, to aspiring youngsters who might see the work I do as an inspiration. The awards are not mine as an individual, but collectively to my contemporaries because I am no better without them” said Chepape. Not only does he dominate the fine arts industry, but Chepape Makgato also holds a three-year Diploma in Media Practice majoring in Journalism. One would ask themselves what could be the motive for him to pursue journalism while he has a niche career in the arts. He explained, “I always loved writing, and I thought it fit to do something about it to advance that other passion of mine. Journalism happened to be a pointer to this direction of pursuit. Besides, when I was at the art college, I worked at the art bookstore, and it always puzzled me that white people primarily wrote art books and decided to be the change I wanted to see. I believe that media studies should be included in our primary education curricula because information is consumed from media as an alternative from institutions of education”. He is an arts freelance writer; he also contributes regular reviews for ART AFRICA magazine’s online and digital platforms. As a simple young person who reads and writes poetry to relax, Chepape founded Samanthole Creative Projects and Workshop in 2010.

He says the aim is to provide art skills and promote the craft amongst the youth in rural areas of Limpopo and South Africa at large. He has created book club in the township of Kensington in Johannesburg where he was born. Because Chepape is passionate about literacy development in rural areas, his love for children was also the motive for him to establish book club and encourage reading and writing. “I have created few book clubs here in Gauteng

and Limpopo. I am honoured to work with a great team of dedicated men and women who are selfless and passionate about literacy development. It is not the fault of children to be illiterate; it simply shows that the society has a disease and that is of denying children access to books to improve their minds and social wellbeing. I am passionate about children because obviously, they are the most untapped natural resources, when we nurture and

nourish, we create a brighter future for any society, Chepape said. Chepape is looking forward to travelling more this year on international artist’s residencies and doing more art workshops with youngsters. He will be launching Khehla Chepape Makgato Reading Centre in Ngwamorei Village in Limpopo later this year. A dedicated library in honour of the work that he does in arts and literacy development especially in rural areas. aha MOMENTS! | 47

Five ways to Bring Tourists to Your Business With the current Rand exchange rate highly favourable for foreigners, here are five ways to optimise your market exposure to tourists By Dylan Kohlstädt | images Sourced

T

he South African tourism industry has its hands full all year with holidaymakers, honeymooners and business people itching to enjoy everything our country has to offer. The Rand / US$ / £ / € exchange has made the Rainbow Nation a prime hotspot for foreign visitors and it is your goal as a business owner, to make sure they leave with much lighter pockets than when they arrived. But how do you reach foreign visitors? And, more importantly, how do you reach them without blowing your marketing budget to absolute smithereens?

Be visible online If your business does not have an online presence, you’re pretty much invisible. Long gone are the days of poring over the Yellow Pages in search of the right business. Today, services providers are just a click away and it’s customary for tourists to do their research well before they hop on the plane. If you don’t make it onto the first page of a Google search, you are dead in the water. 50 | aha MOMENTS!

There are three ways to hitch a ride on the online bandwagon: Website Your website home page is the shop front of your business. Make sure that, as a shopfront, your website home page is interesting and has a sample of all your offerings. Don’t make peb ople click to find out more, everything should be there within easy reach. Think about the fastest, most convenient shopping experience you’ve ever had: easy-to-find parking bays, super-clear directional signage, amenities to meet your every need, service with a smile, and being able to do everything you came to do in less than ten minutes... Your website user experience should be no different. Easy-touse websites make more sales, make more money and make sure customers come back to shop again. If you’re not sure, commission some usability testing and you’ll find that just a few small changes can make a big difference. Make sure that your website is mobile friendly. The majority of your tourist customers will be limited to using mobiles during their visit.

You don’t want them to battle to find the information they’re looking for. Hand it to them on an easy-to-navigate silver platter. A great website is the perfect combination of style, simplicity and function. Your website must be quick-to-load, simple and memorable.

to your database to drive traffic to your website. It’s about being memorable and top-of-mind. What’s more, if you do it right, you won’t be labelled a spammer (which is always a win).

Search Engine Optimisation That being said, a beautiful website will be of little use without some seriously good SEO. Search Engine Optimisation is the buzzword of the day, as more business owners have realised that tricking Google with meta-tag manipulation is no longer an option. Google knows. Google always knows… These days you .have to work extremely hard for ‘Page One’ status. But once you achieve it, you can sit back, run your business and watch the leads stream in. Your Google ranking will start to drive a lot more traffic to your beautiful website and fresh leads from customers ready to buy your product or service. Run an SEO audit and then optimise your website for Google (and your tourist customers). You can thank us later.

Be sure to follow these tips: • Don’t only talk about yourself and your services • Create lots of interesting content that you send out monthly • Only send emails that address your customers’ needs

Pay-Per-Click No hope of turning up on page one using organic SEO only? Well, Google will happily take your money and put you on page one for all your customers to find you. Paid advertising online has revolutionised the way we market to our customer base. Your customers are online, so why waste money trying to reach them via the Yellow Pages? PPC (or Pay-Per-Click) is kind of like ‘pay as you go’ for advertising: you set the budget, you set the platform, and you only pay for what gets clicked. PPC allows you to turn your marketing budget into measurable brand awareness, leads and conversions. The best part is that you don’t need a massive marketing budget to reach potential customers anymore. In fact, you can run highly targeted Google and Facebook ad campaigns that will get your business noticed for half the price. A R500 boosted post on Facebook can help you generate more leads than a billboard ever could, and you can track leads and conversions every step of the way. Do lead generation campaigns What’s a lead? It’s a sales enquiry. Want more sales enquiries? Want to receive daily emails from people asking you to contact them? Then lead generation is for you. Lead generation campaigns are a powerful way to do just that: generate quality business prospects and leads. Depending on your product or service, you could create an eBook or white paper for site visitors to download, like Top 10 Ice-Cream Shops to Visit in Cape Town in 2016 or 16 Seriously Awesome Trail Rides You Have to Do in South Africa – and ask for their email address in exchange. You can encourage people to sign up from across various platforms (email, web, paid ads, banner ads, social media, etc.). Everything you do in business should be geared towards gathering email addresses from enquirers and prospects, and building up your database. Before long, you’ll have a lengthy list of prime contacts (local and international). Create a great newsletter Email marketing remains one of the most powerful marketing tools available. Why? It’s practically free and nearly every person has an email address. The beauty of online is that anyone with an internet connection has access to your business. Write great blogs and email them out

Remember, your contacts are gold. Guard them carefully, and aim to establish yourself as the best in your field. Reviews Reviews are the online equivalent to word of mouth, and are no less powerful. Get your business reviewed and listed on sites like TripAdvisor, Zomato, Bizcommunity, Hello Peter, Eat Out, etc. Keep your eyes peeled for all reviews that come in, both positive and negative. Don’t be tempted to play ostrich and avoid bad reviews. Remember, responding to bad critics is your opportunity to redeem yourself and your business in the eyes of consumers. PokémonGo If PokémonGo is news to you, you need to get with the programme! Businesses are getting creative as they try to optimise the store footfall resulting from this popular app. Turn your business premises into a Pokéstop and set up a Lure for tourists (and locals) who use the app. This will generate increased foot traffic into your business and (hopefully) the chance of converting feet into sales. As they say: “If you can’t beat ‘em… join ‘em” (and catch ‘em all!) In short, the tourism tree is ripe for the picking, which means that businesses like yours and mine can’t afford to not get a piece of that lucrative pie. Good luck! Walk the Oldest Way of the Camino de Santiago The walking holiday phenomenon has taken Europe and the UK by storm with a range of companies arranging multiday routes. By Franki Black, for On Foot Holidays | Images Š On Foot Holidays

T

he ancient Camino de Santiago - the most famous group of walking routes in the world–has attracted millions of pilgrims to Spain since the 9th Century. It is said that a hermit discovered the bones of the apostle St James in Santiago de Compostela, which is the endpoint of the 64 | aha MOMENTS!

famous walks. Whatever the reality, the discovery quickly led to significant spiritual and political regeneration in Spain and the rest of Europe and ever since, pilgrims have made their way on foot (or, more recently, bicycle) to the cathedral of Santiago. Over time, the Camino de Santiago has grown

in popularity. Today over 200 000 walkers hike its many routes every year in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment or simply a wholesome physical challenge. The most popular route is the Camino Frances, which starts in France, but for those in search of solitude, there are a few other options.

Your journey starts at the cathedral in Oviedo and quickly climbs into the rolling Asturian Hills. After many days of walking, you finally arrive at the Roman-walled town of Lugo, one of the highlights along the route. Four days after leaving Lugo, you’ll enter Santiago and its central square where you’ll rejoice with scores of other pilgrims who have come from afar. It is here where you can claim your very own “Compostela” certificate, but only if you’d walked the last 100km to Santiago on foot.

Most notable is the Camino Primitivo, which starts in Oviedo (northwest Spain) and ends two weeks later in Santiago. This is the oldest, most remote and arguably most scenic of all the ways. King Alfonso the Chaste of Asturias allegedly walked this way in 814AD - whether he followed the exact route is unknown, but the wealth of churches and other evidence along the route suggest that it was something very close to it. Best time to go: South African Winter About On Foot Holidays: Rated one of Europe’s leading self-guided walking tour operators, On Foot Holidays offers 28 selfguided walking tours across Europe. Tips to gr owing your own fresh gar den By Harvey Fox | images Supplied

Consider container growing: Don’t own that mansion with rolling green hilly gardens yet? Relax, you don’t need acres of land to get planting. And there’s no harm in starting small and manageable. Advantages to starting with container planting include space, easier access to watering and the ability to “follow” the sun. And just about any plant or vegetable can start out in a container. Weeding is also minimal.

2.

Container selection: It’s tempting to want to go with the funky and pretty pots first– we know, but make sure the containers you select will give your plants room to grow - taking into consideration the expected size of the plant should reach. Holes for drainage are also important. Typically, plants in clay pots need more watering than other containers.

3.

Soil Selection: The correct soil is key to a successful urban garden. If your garden soil has not received too much love lately, then consider commercial potting soil. The pH of your soil is important so if you are not sure how to check, there are cool gadgets from the local nursery that can help you–alternatively don’t be shy with the compost if your soil is out of the ideal pH range.

66 | aha MOMENTS!

4.

Magic mulching: When you plant in containers in full sun, consider a layer of mulch on the top of the soil to help retain moisture in the soil. Up to 70% of water can evaporate from the soil on a hot day if you don’t have much as a protective layer on top. It is one of the best moisture holding strategies around.

5.

Be water wise: Clean water is vital for any urban garden. Water pots in the later afternoon–research suggests that watering container plants in the afternoon may lead to healthier, stronger growing plants compared to container plants watered early in the morning. The next time you boil or steam vegetables, don’t pour the water down the drain, use it to water potted patio plants, and you’ll be amazed at how the plants respond to the “vegetable soup.”

6.

Plant smart: Do your home-work before you start planting. Some species live better in an urban environment than others. Start with plants that have low water needs – these will save you time and money in the garden. Grow drought resistant veggies too–things like green beans, brinjals, beetroot, carrots or Swiss chard are hardy.

Companion planting is worth considering when growing a variety of products in a small space. Some plants are not as compatible as others in close quarters – kind of like people.

7.

Sunny spots: Sunlight is crucial, make sure you find a place where the plant has access to at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day.

8.

One pot veggie garden: The very smallest and simplest of urban gardens is simply a single pot that is packed with as many herbs and veggies as possible. Get yourself a galvanised water trough, drill some drainage holes, fill it with soil and then plant complementary groups of plants together.

9.

Plant friends: Companion planting is worth considering when growing a variety of products in a small space. Some plants are not as compatible as others in close quarters – kind of like people.

Clean water is vital for any urban garden.

10. Keep it organised: You’ve got these amazing herbs and now you want to cook with them – so, keep it organised. There are lots of funky ways to keep your garden coordinated. Simple ice-cream sticks are an easy way to mark what is what. And you can style them any way you want. Use paint, markers, washi tape, or even use chalk-board paint to customise them even more. All seeds are available at selected garden centres nationwide. www.rawliving.co.za aha MOMENTS! | 67

In what can only be described as sheer luck, Candice describes with great enthusiasm about their encounter with the ‘Big 5’, sighting all five in one afternoon, in all its splendour! Kyra and Brooklyn were ecstatic! What an incredible experience it must have been. Rare species such as wild dog and cheetah, along with antelope such as roan,

nother magical experience for the family was at aha Thakadu River Camp where they celebrated Garreth’s Birthday. This exclusive, upscale safari tented camp is set in the the Madikwe Game Reserve within the riverine canopy, along the banks of the Marico River and the Botswana border about 20km from Gaborone. The hotel It consists of 12 luxurious, tented suites surrounded by untamed bush yet offers every touch of modern comfort in a wonderfully designed space that exudes a strong Afro-Asian safari milieu. The family stayed in one of the three family units with en suite bathrooms, where Kyra and Brooklyn were comfortably accommodated. Mesmerised by her surroundings and the roaring sounds of lion at night, it’s no wonder Kyra soon exclaimed “Now this is how you camp.” Candice was also taken in by the sights, describing it as “incredibly rustic and truly African”. Garreth simply indulged in the moment, as he was doted on by his girls, and savoured every morsel of the delicious chocolate cake, courtesy of the aha Thakadu River Camp team. Sunny skies and white sandy beaches awaited the Fishers as they made their way to the Zulu kingdom, first on their agenda was a fun filled mountain escape that awaited the family at aha Alpine Heath Resort, a four star resort nestled by the scenery of the Drakensburg Mountain range. This ideal family resort claimed the top spot of winning the 2016 TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award in the category of Family Resorts ranking in the top 25 nationwide, so it’s no wonder the family describes having ‘a whale’ of a time here. The family enjoyed activities such as horseback riding, hiking, puttputt plus a jungle gym area where Kyra and Brooklyn had fun on end, not to mention the huge inviting pool, surrounded by nature in all its splendour, the girls were in their element. From the mountains to the city sky scrapers of Umhlanga is where the roads led the Fishers to the luxurious aha Royal Palm Hotel, located in Umhlanga, in Durban. Candice describes the family’s stay here as magical as they were swept away by the luxurious design and setting of the hotel. Their visit was filled with fun, of course. The Fishers enjoyed delicious meals from the DISH restaurant, located onsite which offers patrons a meal extravaganza creating an absolute masterpiece of culinary delights. There was a lot to explore for the family at Umhlanga’s golden Kyra and Brooklyn enjoy a splash in the pool. beaches, and by the looks of things Kyra and Brooklyn had an incredible time. The family spent two glorious nights at aha Urban Park Hotel & Spa where they felt right at home as each self-catering apartment is air-conditioned, has a kitchen with a stove and oven, the private bathrooms are fitted with a bath or shower and it comes equipped with a satellite TV and DVD player. “In fact, feeling so comfortable and right at home almost caused a problem as all dad; Garreth could think of was getting hold of the

TV remote to indulge in his favourite shows, but the girls were on to him. They hid the remote and invited him to a workout session at the fully equipped in-house gym instead, to which he gladly obliged.” So we can confirm that the girls have dad firmly wrapped around their finger or is that fingers? After working up quite an appetite they headed down to the Cosmopolitan Restaurant which serves buffet and à la carte meals daily, and the Vida-e kiosk serves coffee throughout the day. The hotel This chic trendy apartment style hotel is the ideal place for that urban getaway with just minutes away from the golden sandy beach and also within easy reach are the 19th Hole Putting Course, the Barnyard Theatre and the Gateway Theatre shopping centre. After an energetic day at the Gateway mall, Candice & Garreth enjoyed a pampering session at the award winning Aqua Spa, which offers sensual treatments easing out the stresses of life’s daily hustle and bustle, a treat they described as one of their highlights. aha The Waterfront Hotel & Spa in Durban was next up on their itinerary. This hotel offers a haven of rest and relaxation and that’s exactly what the Fishers experienced. The hotel This hotel is set within a historical area andits raw brick façade on the outside and in some rooms is still reminiscent of this architecture however the interior of the hotel is fully kitted out with modern décor and amenities. 4.

When checking in most guests have handbags/laptop bags, that are usually placed on the floor next to them whilst checking in over the reception counter. Do not do this: most lobby thefts take place in this moment when you arefocusing on completing registration card and are distracted. Always place the handbag/laptop between your legs or press your foot against it whilst checking in. Make sure to doo the same when checking out. 2. Never ask a stranger for directions to your room. Always look through the peephole before opening your door or secure the door latch to partially open the door in order to confirm who is outside. Be aware of your surroundings in the car park, look out for strangers walking in the same direction as you. Never unlock your vehicle if a stranger is close to you, proceed on walking in the direction of security or car park exit or go past your vehicle (or even turn back towards the hotel entrance or lift). If you are a delegate on a conference, ensure that your electronics are safe during all breaks. Ask the hotel to lock the venue during lunch or to provide security in the venue.

5.

Whilst in the bar or restaurant always keep your cell phone secured. A fairly common scenario is where the guest is distracted and another individual removes the cell phone from the table or bar counter.

6.

When using the public restroomsdo not put your handbag/ laptop on the floor close to the door, most restrooms have a big gap between the door and the floor and it is easy to grab parcels from underneath the door so always be alert.

7.

If you are accompanied in a lift by a stranger and he/she gets off on the same floor do not walk directly to your room keep on walking until the stranger turns into a corridor or enters his/her room, then proceed to your room.

8.

Try to avoid taking random taxi / transfer suppliers, it is better to rather ask the hotel staff to book you a taxi or transfer.

9.

If the hotel still uses manual keys never leave your key on a counter or restaurant table, rather keep it in your pocket or if you lose your key rather move to another room rather than requesting a new key.
