This uniquely located lodge is in an area that is believed to cover the greatest concentration of recorded San rock art per square meter on earth. We are continuously committed to enhancing our properties and services, therefore to achieve this we have embarked on inclusive refurbishments at some of our key properties within our portfolio. One of these was the recent relaunch of our renowned conferencing and accommodation venue in Ekurhuleni, aha Kopanong Hotel & Conference Centre, page 42-44. We reveal the stunning outcome of the extensive refurbishment to all its conference venues. Also making its debut after an extensive makeover is aha Casa do Sol Hotel & Resort on page 56-57; this establishment is the ideal base from which enjoy day trips to the Kruger National Park and to tour the heart of the Lowveld. Note it with Veuve Just in time for Spring, Veuve Clicquot launches its iconic sunburst yellow limited edition – the Veuve Clicquot Magnetic Pencil – the newest addition to the sought-after magnetic accessories, which forms part of its Colorama Collection.

T

radition holds that Veuve Clicquot winemakers use a pencil to jot down their notes about each wine before they proceed to the all-important act of blending. The Veuve Clicquot Magnetic Pencil in each box is a chic accessory for your fridge, just waiting to be personalised with a happy message or bright reminder. Put your own spin on a long-standing winemaking tradition by simply writing your message on the Magnetic Pencil, then displaying it on your fridge while you chill your 750ml bottle of Yellow Label. Colour is such a radiant and expressive part of the Veuve Clicquot winemaking process and has long been essential to its heritage. Veuve Clicquot winemakers blend each Champagne, using unique reserve wines, with the same great savoir-faire and skill as artists who blend colours. Madame Clicquot’s most audacious innovations were inspired in part by bright hues and in 1816 Madame Clicquot invented the riddling table. This brilliant idea was born from her desire for Champagne pure in colour, that eliminated the lees deposit in the bottle. And 200 years ago, in 1818, she made the first known blended rosé Champagne, a creation distinct in taste, aroma, and luminous colour. Madame Clicquot knew that colour is essential to appreciating wine. Before the wine even touches our lips, we perceive a wine’s colours, depths, and luminosities. As Madame Clicquot once wrote, “our wines must be flattering both on the palate and on the eye.” The Veuve Clicquot Colorama Collection proves once again, with bright trendy accessories and chic Champagne, that life tastes better in colour! Rooibos charming its way around the world Text & Images: Supplied

R

ooibos earned another stripe earlier this year when the world’s biggest coffee shop chain, Starbucks, introduced Rooibos Lattes as part of its new spring menu that had thousands of customers in the northern hemisphere hooked. Starbucks’ Rooibos Lattes come in two variants: Rooibos Tea Latte and Red Apple Rooibos Tea Latte. The drinks are described as “luxurious” and are made by using a new method to extract maximum flavour from the tea, which took the company two years to perfect. The Rooibos lattes were introduced to 950 stores across the UK – one of the biggest tea-drinking markets in the world. Adele du Toit, the spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says it’s a real thrill to have Rooibos feature so prominently on Starbucks’ UK menus and speaks to the growing popularity of the tea and demand

for health-promoting beverages worldwide. In a region where a whopping 60 billion cups of tea are consumed each year, with over 1 200 varieties to choose from, it’s a big deal for Rooibos to have been given the nod by the Brits. Aside from Rooibos’ many health benefits, due to its high level of antioxidants, du Toit also describes it as one of SA’s most versatile products, which big brands like Starbucks are capitalising on. “There is a lot of innovation happening in the Rooibos tea category and marketers are exploring with lots of different mixes and product offerings. Ready-to-drink tea products, such as Rooibos Cappuccinos and Rooibos Lattes are at the forefront of this growth as they fit squarely into the time-crunched, but health-seeking lifestyle of consumers. For the younger generation, a standard cup of tea is no longer enough. Millennials want higher quality tea and lots of different options and flavours to choose from.”

“Starbucks’Red Apple Rooibos Tea Latte as served to customers in the UK. It is also caffeine-free and combines red apple syrup with apple blossom dust, creating a slightly sweeter and fruity version of the Rooibos Tea Latte.”

“Aside from Rooibos’ many health benefits, due to its high level of antioxidants, du Toit also describes it as one of SA’s most versatile products, which big brands like Starbucks are capitalising on.”

“Personalised hot beverages is another emerging trend where in-store touchscreens and digital channels sync with shoppers’ social media profiles to suggest different flavour combinations, based on their personalities. For example, consumers could select a Rooibos chocolate-, spice- or fruit infusion, while further toppings can be added to create a bespoke product that matches a customer’s personality or mood at any given time. According to du Toit, the global resurgence in the tea category points to consumers wanting to drink better quality tea when they do put the kettle on. Flavoured and speciality teas are perceived as more of an indulgence and consumers who are buying these drinks are willing to spend that bit more on their cup of tea. South Africa currently exports Rooibos tea to over 30 countries, including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and US. It is exclusively grown in the Cederberg area of the Western Cape and is arguably one of SA’s best exports. The growing global interest in the tea will help to enhance the demand for local produce while stimulating much-needed local economic activity. The Rooibos tea lattes launched in South Africa in June. Starbucks SA sells the classic Rooibos Microground Latte and the Red Apple Rooibos latte. They also have both options available as crème based Frappuccinos! For more info on the many uses and health benefits of Rooibos, visit www.sarooibos.co.za aha MOMENTS! | 15

Moshe Kgasoane’s musical history Mi Casa’s Mo-T plays from the heart – and that’s why the band’s sound is making global connections

Text Trevor Crighton | Images © S’innamon PR & Communications

“B

efore you put music out there, you have to love it – and then hopefully the fans will. There has to be an emotional connection, or it won’t touch people,” says Mi Casa trumpeter Mo-T. “There’s a whole lot of love connection attached to music”. That emotional connection to music is part of his DNA, rooted in the work of his grandfather Henry Kgasoane, who founded the Alexandra Brass Band and Henry’s Big Band, in which he played with his own son – and Mo-T’s father – Banza, himself a formidable trumpeter who was an integral part of the sound of crossover soulsters Mango Groove. Young Mo-T – then ‘just’ Moshe Kgasoane – used to steal moments on his father’s trumpet when his parents left the house, before Banza eventually decided he was old enough to be inducted into the world of big brass. The biggest musical lesson he learned from Banza was that he should be himself and not try to mimic any other musicians. “Other things followed – staying away from drinking, drugs and >>

all that sort of stuff,” he says. “He also taught me to practice, practice and practice some more – there’s a relationship one creates with an instrument, and that only happens through practice. You can’t just play when you’re on stage – you’ll embarrass yourself”. He still practices every day – whether on his own, or as part of the group. “Sometimes it’s good to get away from being in a rehearsal room because it gives you time to experiment and learn – but on the other hand, the collaborative aspect of rehearsing together is where the big ideas are born when music is shared”. Despite his musical upbringing and being in one of the country’s biggest bands, he doesn’t read a single note of music, preferring instead to play by feel. “A lot of musicians will tell you you’re useless if you can’t read music – but if it’s in your blood, you play from the heart – and that’s far more important in delivering that emotional connection that draws people to your sound,” he says. Fostering that emotional connection to his music is something that feeds the growth of Mi Casa as a band, too. The trio famously formed in 2011 after meeting each other for the first time at a rooftop party and jamming together on stage right away. The immediate chemistry was nurtured into an album that delivered the iconic hit These Streets, which catapulted the group to five Metro FM Music Award nominations in their first year and another five South African Music Awards nominations in their second – three of which, they scooped. 18 | aha MOMENTS!

Success came literally overnight, with international tours, endorsements and opportunities beyond music and for years, the only way was up. Then in 2017, the whirlwind started to take its toll and the group considered splitting on the back of what Mo-T describes as ‘petty stuff’. “You have to remember that we didn’t know each other at all when we got together – and things got so busy that we never really got time to understand each other,” he says. “We’ve always considered Mi Casa as a marriage – couples fight and make up, there

are good times and bad. The dips forced us to learn to communicate better and brought us closer as brothers – we know each other far better now and we’ve learnt that, just like a marriage, communication is the key”. Out of that struggle came their fourth album, Familia, which came out in August 2017 – a homage to the close-knit nature of the group, without appearances by any guest performers or producers. His own marriage to Lovegocia in 2013 has grown him into a family man, with daughters Botlhale and Tlhalefang arriving as well.

Being part of one of the continent’s most successful groups and juggling a family life hasn’t been easy, but Mo-T says it has taught him to focus more on the bigger picture. “Life has changed – now I finish a show and I can’t wait to just get home to my wife and kids,” he says. “It’s important to grow up and not stagnate and my family has really helped me do that”. His daughters are well on their way to becoming the fourth musical generation in the family. “They love singing and one is already in love with the guitar and trumpet,” he says. “They want to >> aha MOMENTS! | 19

One of the hallmarks of Mi Casa’s music is their ability to cross all manner of boundaries, from generational through to cultural – even across borders. Mo-T says that it was never a conscious decision to create a specific sound – they’ve just continued to work together as they did on that rooftop, the first night they met.

rehearse with me and they bring their dummy trumpets along and we play together – the support for my career starts at home and it means the world to me”. The lessons he learned from his father about staying away from the party lifestyle have stood him in good stead – he’s a fitness fanatic who watches what he eats so he can stay physically and mentally sharp in the maelstrom of his crazy schedule. “When you’re touring, you’re not just playing – there’s all the travel, the meetings, the rehearsals, interviews and meeting our fans, so it’s very important to maintain your focus,” he says. His pursuit of his healthy lifestyle at home is single-minded, too: “I always practice, and I have to train – even if it means an argument with my wife – but she knows how important it is to me”. One of the hallmarks of Mi Casa’s music is their ability to cross all manner of boundaries, from generational through to cultural – even across borders. Mo-T says that it was never a conscious decision to create a specific sound – they’ve just continued to work together as they did on that rooftop, the first night they met. “It’s just a blessing that we have. When music comes out of love, those things happen automatically,” he says. “People always come up to us and tell us songs like Heavenly Sent have changed the way they view their partners and that These Streets sums up the way they feel about connections they 20 | aha MOMENTS!

make out in the world, and that’s very humbling for us”. As for the future, he says that while the group isn’t about winning awards, recognition on the scale of something like the Grammys would be a dream. “Being recognised for a song that the world knows or being able to influence millions of people with our music – that’s the kind of thing that would make us really happy,” he says. As for his personal goals, he says he doesn’t like to mention his plans when they’re “only a quarter to done”, but he does have ambitions to pass down a taste of his life and experiences to younger musicians. “When people feel like they’re famous or they’ve achieved something, they tend to think it’s all theirs and they forget to share,” he says. “My dream is to share my experience with young musicians and give them advice that’ll help them break into the music industry”. The lessons he learned from his father could end up inspiring a whole new generation of musicians… aha MOMENTS! | 21

5 Ways to get your patio Spring ready Days are growing warmer, and the daylight that we dreamed of during winter is finally here. Spring gives us a renewed sense of energy. After a lazy winter, this season reminds us that anything is possible. Warm up your outdoor spaces with these five steps. Text & Images: © Elle Franco

wITH eLLE fRANCO

1. Add Vases Nothing says springtime, more than blooming flowers. Display fresh flowers and greenery for an organic feel. Get creative with your vases. Using spray paint and painter’s tape, spray geometric patterns on to an old jam jar. You could even up-cycle glass jars and bottles to house your fresh flowers in. A huge DIY decor trend is the “dip” effect. Tape off a jar, vase or container horizontally and paint the one side in a bright colour or metallic shine to achieve that dipped-in-paint feel!

22 | aha MOMENTS!

2. Experiment with Fabrics Fabrics are the easiest way to inject life and colour into a space. Adding throw cushions to a seating area is an inexpensive and easy option to bring out a particular colour pallet, add zest or update your patio with trending colours and patterns. Bold colours are on trend this year. Opt for bright colour cushions. Mix and match with geometric or striped patterns to add character. You can also try a table runner, placemats, and outdoor rugs. These items are not only functional, they cosy-up the patio. When choosing a rug for a patio opt for a plastic/synthetic woven outdoor rug that is weather and water resistant.

3. Try Wood Versatile, practical and organic, wood is a favourite for both inside and outside of the home. Purchase wooden outdoor furniture, or you can DIY the items that you might need for your patio. Rustic charm can be achieved by repurposing old pallet wood into a coffee table or a pot plant sign. Better yet, create your seating from pallets! It’s an easy way to save money on outdoor sofas.

5. Accessorise Serving trays that match or compliment your outdoor living space are a must! There are endless designs and DIY how to’s available. You could even display the tray outside as part of the decor when it is not in use. Adding magazines and coffee tables books makes your patio more inviting. Better yet, add board games so that when friends and family come over, you can one another’s company by playing a board game or two together.

4. Play with Lighting No patio is complete without adding lighting and warmth. This can be done by merely adding candles to outdoor coffee and side tables. Once lit, they add a sense of comfort to an outdoor area. Looking for a new DIY project? Make a table top fire pit! All you need are fire rocks (heat resistant), a concrete bowl and chaffer fuel tin. Centre the chaffer fuel tin in the centre of the concrete bowl. Secure the 24 | aha MOMENTS!

the tin with fire rocks and then light the chaffer oil. Voila! You have a mini fire pit. If you don’t quite warm to the idea, fairy lights are another option. Fairy lights are so trendy you can purchase all kinds to suit your style and space. Hang them up or place them in a clear vase to light up the patio. Some are batteryoperated and others are solar powered, the latter being a big win for the environment!

The staged reality presented in his black and white images, referencing elements of magic realism, soon became Meyersfeld’s signature style. Enlighten

T

o attain the desired aesthetic sensibility in his photographic work, Michael Meyersfeld’s practice as an artist has always been informed by a strong sense of planning, by attention to aspects such as finding the correct location, selecting the cast, wardrobe, props and a host of details as well as setting up a pre-shoot before preparing the camera position and possibly the choice of the lens. This practice has been part of his approach since he began a dual career of advertising and fine art photography. One could argue that the career in advertising – one that landed him numerous international awards – contributed to his emphasis on meticulous planning and resulted in the “staged” qualities in portfolios that he has exhibited to critical acclaim in major galleries. As an example, Life Staged, a series consisting of four bodies of work, 12 Naked Men (2005), Woman Undone, (2009) Guests at the Troyeville Hotel (2010) and Urban Disquiet (2012) attest to Meyersfeld’s preference to construct images with the make belief allure of theatrical performance. ‘Each image can perhaps be compared to a “still” from a movie,’ he argues in his artist’s statement on the subject, ‘except that this one image must contain all the emotions that would perhaps require several minutes of film. The “audience” can sit back and indulge in all the emotions presented without fear of being trapped in reality. “The dead man lying on the stage floor with a knife in his back does get up when the curtain closes.” The staged reality presented in his black and white images, referencing elements of magic realism, soon became Meyersfeld’s signature style. He became known for his stark, sometimes sombre, lonely and edgy imagery presented as social commentary, for images with subtle nuances such as fear, titillation and humour designed to portray emotional and behavioural patterns. Alongside his representational and overtly narrative work revealing an outer world Meyersfeld started to offer glimpses of an inner world, as in Transience (2011). Instead of a focus on the story or message contained in the image, his interest seems to have shifted in these works more to a contemplation of the inherent qualities in objects. These shifts resulted in images that seem to have happened without planning, as if an even more intuitive mind was at work in taking these images (150 Boxes, Clay, Rock, Detail Sea Point Pool). These images could be rendered as abstractions, as less representational, less reliant on meaning and understanding. They are images drawing on texture and dramatic tension more than a linear narrative, pictures more inclined to be felt, to be experienced, than to be understood. Meyersfeld’s recent photographs require a different type of eye, not an eye programmed to understand, to fathom or to find a narrative but one that is alerted to a deeper sense of awareness. With an eye liberated from the dominant quest to find and attach meaning, more faculties, other than just the cerebral, are employed to sense and experience form, shape, texture, play of light, distance, connections and conversations between the photographs. Inner dialogue seems to have taken over the role that commentary was playing in his previous work. Over the years the strong sense of planning has been internalised to the extent that attention to detail now seems to flow forth effortlessly, without a conscious process of decision making involved. In Meyersfeld’s recent collection of images the volume of the external world has been turned down in order that both the artist and the viewer can hear and feel the silence – the silence and stillness that have always been characteristic of Meyersfeld’s sensibility and aesthetic. aha MOMENTS! | 37

There’s really nothing like the joy of gardening. Connecting to nature, the pride of growing your own plants, flowers, food and the amazing health benefits that come along with it. It’s also well documented that gardens, no matter the size, have the potential to bring people and communities together, which is why on Sunday 21 October the call to action for South Africa’s annual Garden Day is to down tools, invite neighbours, friends and family round to celebrate your garden together.

N

ow in its third year, Garden Day sprouted as an idea from a group of enthusiastic gardeners who wanted to start a movement to unite South Africans by creating a day where everyone can enjoy and celebrate their gardens together. This Garden Day South Africans are once again encouraged to sow the Spirit of Ubuntu. So if you’ve been admiring your neighbour’s garden from afar, intrigued by their rambling roses or eager to learn more about their striking succulents, Garden Day is the perfect time for you to branch out and cultivate relationships with those around you.

Nature’s Medicine Being in your own piece of paradise (even if you don’t harvest your own produce) produces food for the soul. According to various scientific studies, gardening has many physical and mental health benefits. Spending time in your garden and getting your hands dirty can expose you to friendly bacteria in the soil, which can improve your mood as well as boost your immune system. The psychological benefits of gardening have been well documented. In a Norwegian study people diagnosed with depression, persistent low mood, or bipolar II disorder spent six hours a week growing flowers and vegetables. After three months, half the participants had experienced a measurable improvement in their symptoms. Curiously, this mood persisted three months after the program ended. >>

The Mover & Shaker: Nandi Dlepu Planting Garden Day Seeds There’s no denying it, throughout the year an enormous amount of effort goes into maintaining our gardens, which is why we think all the hard work deserves a proper celebration. What you do in your garden on Garden Day is completely up to you, but we think it’s a great opportunity to get together with friends and family so that as many people as possible can celebrate together. Here are some ideas of what you can do: •

Use fresh flowers and greenery • from your garden to make flower crowns. Invite friends for a bring ’n-braai, use herbs from the • garden to flavour meat. Invite neighbours and friends around for rooibos tea en • beskuit. Have a garden scavenger hunt.

40 | aha MOMENTS!

Have a plant club. Ask guests to bring rare or interesting plants to swop with one of the other guests. Enjoy dinner outside in the garden with each dish featuring a home-grown ingredient. If you don’t have a garden, visit someone who does and enjoy it with them.

Gardening remains the world’s most popular hobby and for 2018 Garden Day Flower Crown Ambassador Nandi Dlepu, her mom’s impressive garden inspired her love for flowers and plants. Nandi Dlepu is the head of Mamakashaka, a creative agency based in Johannesburg and the co-founder of BLOOM, which hosts bi-monthly conversations in Johannesburg, New York and Harare. “As an ambassador for Garden Day SA, this year I will be hosting a Brunch & Ride on Garden Day, Sunday 21 October 2018 following last year’s huge success, “says Dlepu. The Ladies “Garden Day” Brunch & Ride begins with a demonstration on how to make flower crowns and floral decorations for your bike led by Garden Day SA. After that the group will then set off for a relaxed social bike ride through Soweto before returning for brunch and bubbly in a garden.

trip along the Chobe River and into the Okavango Delta conjures quintessentially African safari images – gliding smoothly along the waterways in a mokoro as the setting sun paints the horizon gold and the animals come out to drink. Sightings of the Big Five along the river are bucket list ticks, but many guests are ignoring an entire other world of amazing wildlife – the one below the surface of the water. Ichthyologists Mike Bruton, Glenn Merron and Paul Skelton have produced a book, Fishes of the Okavango Delta and Chobe River, Botswana, to try and change that. This showcases the region’s dynamic aquatic creatures. “It’s great that the fishes are at last getting some attention!” says Bruton. “Although the Chobe River and Okavango Delta are aquatic systems, all everyone seems to talk or write about is the mammals and birds!”. >>

The book offers background information on the region’s diverse aquatic habitats, highlighting fish feeding, breeding and survival strategies with colour illustrations and advice for anglers – as well as vital conservation information. Skelton says that the fish most keen-eyed visitors are likely to see fall into two categories: those caught by local fishermen (like Zambezi Grunter, Sharptooth and Bluntthooth Catfish and Tigerfish) and those observed from a mokoro or the deck of a waterside lodge (like Topminnows, Tilapia Sparrmanii and Southern Mouthbrooder). “Pike nest are easy to spot once you know what they look like,” says Merron. “They always on the fringes so those on a sundowner cruise on a big boat along the Chobe wouldn’t find them. Use a smaller boat along the fringes, and you will see them most months, except for about May to early August”. For angling-focussed visitors, Skelton says that individual fishers have their preference for the time of day they head down to the water, but it’s important to bear in mind the behaviour of specific species they may be keen to see – like most catfish, which appear in the early morning or evening. “The best means of transport is a mokoro - if you’re in a motorised boat, you should move as slowly and quietly as possible,” advises Bruton. Conservation is a strong focus of the book. “The Thin face Largemouth has been overfished; the Caprivi Killifish is listed as ‘endangered’ as it has a very narrow known distribution range which is threatened by roadworks. The three-spot tilapia is threatened by the introduction of the invasive alien Nile tilapia, which will

46 | aha MOMENTS!

interbreed with it and there is also a strong risk of aquarium fishes, such as guppies, swordtails and mosquitofish being released into the Chobe River, or elsewhere in the Upper Zambezi, and posing a long-term threat to the indigenous fishes,” offers Bruton, by way of just a few examples. Skelton says that local authorities are aware of the problem, but that the bulk of the overfishing is done by people from outside the area, who use gill nets and dry the catch for export.

Putting the S for swedish in SUV

By Bernie Hellberg | Images: © Volvo Car SA

Volvo’s first premium compact SUV, the XC40, recently made landfall and jaws dropped in South Africa. We were there to sample the 2018 European Car of the Year winner.

48 | aha MOMENTS!

V

olvo Car has been hard at work over the last few years crafting a series of world-beating vehicles that have global appeal, with the financial backing from Chinese automotive powerhouse, Geely. As Sweden’s only remaining car producer, Volvo seemed on the brink of collapse, being handed from suitor to suitor in a game of corporate passalong that nearly collapsed the brand altogether. But the XC90 changed all that when it debuted in 2014, breaking down barriers and smashing records for Volvo everywhere. In SA too it snagged the title of 2016 WesBank South African Car of the Year, winning over any critic the brand may have had left. Fine Design From the first glimpse of the new XC40, it is clear that the little premium SUV is familial to the XC90, but with its own unmistakable charm. With clean Swedish lines and bold angles, the expressive exterior is fresh and contemporary, but also instantly classic. Volvo’s unique T-shaped LED lighting signature – dubbed “Thor’s

“ Smart features like a removable rubbish bin, a cubby hole hook, a dedicated smartphone storage area with wireless (inductive) charging, and a multi-adaptable boot floor transform a typically cluttered and sometimes messy car interior into a place of serenity and organised efficiency.

” Hammer” – is carried over from other recent Volvo models. Optional high-level LED lights are also available and feature bending lights for better visibility while cornering. The bespoke interior inherits all of Volvo’s latest design elements, including the 9” Sensus Connect touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. New design elements like the optional contrasting black or white roof, white mirror caps and wheels, Oxide Red leather and “Lava” carpets – made from 100 % recycled materials – will allow XC40 customers the freedom to express a more individualistic style. Besides being sexy outside and in, the XC40 is also a maven of practicality. Smart features like a removable rubbish bin, a cubbyhole hook, a dedicated smartphone storage area with wireless (inductive) charging, and a multi-adaptable boot floor transform a typically cluttered and sometimes messy car interior into a place of serenity and organised efficiency. It’s Swedish minimalism and functionality at its best, combined with sensibility – so perfectly suited to busy South African lifestyles. The Bells and Whistles Volvo model ranges mostly carry similar names, denoting engine derivative, gearbox type and trim level. The XC40 is no exception. Launched locally with a choice of two trim levels – sporty R-Design and elegant Momentum – and two engines, D4 diesel and T5 petrol, the interim range should satisfy most needs until the all-wheel-drive and top-of-the-range Inscription derivatives arrive later in 2018. A T3

front-wheel-drive entry-level version is also expected by the third quarter of 2018. Naturally, the range-topping R-Design derivatives carry higher levels of standard trim than is the case lower down the model lineup. Don’t think, however, that the specification levels are stingy lower down the order, as the entire XC40 range is surprisingly wellequipped. On the safety front, for example, the XC40 includes City Safe as standard. This system senses potential collisions, even when in the dark, and can activate the brakes automatically should you not react in time. City Safety provides three levels of intervention: warning, brake support, and full autonomous braking. It uses a combination of instruments and sensors to constantly monitor surrounding conditions. Optional safety kit includes IntelliSafe Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist and Lane Keeping Aid (R19,250). BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross Traffic Alert and Collision Warning (R6,600) is a must in urban environments, as are the various parkingassistance systems front and rear, at a combined cost of R19,400. Several cosmetic options can also be added to your XC40, including items such as a sports steering wheel with perforated leather (R1,600), premium Harman/Kardon sound (R10,750), smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (R4,100), and the previously mentioned inductive charging system for R2,700. >> aha MOMENTS! | 49

Beyond the car itself, the XC40 also introduces the new Care by Volvo subscription model, whereby customers can subscribe to a car rather than buy it. The fixed monthly fee then includes service, maintenance, insurance, and other value-added benefits. Care by Volvo is under consideration for introduction in South Africa with a planned date of mid-2019. Final Say Although the human race has survived for millennia without the need for compact crossovers, the current onslaught of compact premium SUVs is set to grow because, to many buyers, the premium badge, design, and high seating position of these small luxury crossovers are far more important considerations than their nonpremium, transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive-based powertrains, and their compact accommodations. It’s true for the BMW X2 and Jaguar E-PACE, and now for arguably the suavest of the lot, the XC40. Grab one before they’re all gone. 50 | aha MOMENTS!

A: I’m looking at refining our offering to guests. We will still focus heavily on cooking over a fire but stepping away from the meaty menu that we’ve become known for. You’ll find a lot more seafood and vegetables in the upcoming project. Q: What an exciting time for you, just ahead of launching your new venture! How are you finding inspiration on your travels and please give us a hint as to what we can look forward to without giving too much away? A: I’m looking at refining our offering to guests. We will still focus heavily on cooking over a fire but stepping away from the meaty menu that we’ve become known for. You’ll find a lot more seafood and vegetables in the upcoming project. Q: You have learnt from the best in business. With all that professional training under your belt, you certainly have a highly developed palate. How do you break the mould and challenge yourself to continue to explore new flavour sensations for your patrons? A: I can’t say that I’ve ever been “in the mould”. I’ve always found it quite easy to enjoy lesser known foods and more challenging flavours. The hard part is encouraging guests to try new things. That’s the big challenge. Q: What are some of the most interesting and exciting flavour combinations you have experienced and how have your travels presented you with these new experiences? A: One of the most surprising finds of my recent travels has actually been the lack of surprise to new flavours and techniques. I used to believe that we as country were far behind as opposed to what international chefs are up to. I don’t believe that is the case anymore. Q: Speaking of new flavour combinations, one of your specialities is the fine art of preparing red meat to perfection. Can you give us some unique pairing ideas with red meat? A: Traditionally in South Africa, rosé Champagne is often paired with sweet treats. However, there’s a new school of thought that says that rosé Champagne also pairs beautifully with red meat. A really interesting combination is how well Moët Rosé pairs with meat dishes, especially beef & venison.

Q: Cape Town and indeed South Africa are melting pots of influences and flavours, do you find that people are more open to experimentation here than elsewhere? A: Quite the opposite. I’ve found that we are far less open to trying “strange” flavours, cuts and combinations. I’m hoping this is something that I can help change in the coming years. Q: We can’t wait to experience a new chapter in the life of prodigy Chef Ash Heeger and raise a glass of Moët & Chandon Rosé in celebration. In this phase of reinvention, what is your motto and your mantra for success? A: My motto is, and always has been — cook from the heart and the rest will follow! aha MOMENTS! | 53

Retirement communities restoring hope in times of loss Text & Images: © supplied and Evergreen Lifestyle Village

Y

our spouse is the person you choose to spend your life with, sharing your worldly possessions, goals and dreams and, most importantly, your time. So, what happens when that time eventually runs out? Not from drifting apart and separating, which of course does happen, but when your partner dies. For the surviving spouse, everything changes. According to the National Institute on Aging in the United States, it’s natural and normal to feel anger at being left alone, to feel numb, shocked, fearful, or even guilty “for being the one who is still alive”. One might have trouble sleeping, or experience loss of appetite, concentration problems, or difficulty making decisions. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) says that grief is a very personal experience and the process is different for everyone. “There is no ‘normal and expected’ period for grieving. Some people adjust to a new life within several weeks or months. Others take a year or more, particularly when their daily life has been radically changed or their loss was traumatic and unexpected,” the organisation states. While grieving is not simply sadness or the ‘blues’, it is possible to become depressed or very anxious while grieving. It can take a physical toll on your body, cause sleeplessness and worsen existing chronic illness. This can be “treated” with the help of social support, good self-care, and the passage of time. Of course, if a person’s grief is simply too much to manage then SADAG advises seeking out the help of a grief counsellor or bereavement support group. It is essential to have a support network to help you get through this 58 | aha MOMENTS!

difficult time - whether from family, friends, counsellors or any other support. Many retirement homes around the world have measures in place to assist their residents with coping with loss whether they have specifically moved into a retirement village for that reason or they originally moved in with their spouse. Retirement care expert Lou Devine says it is crucial to maintain contact with a person who is grieving. Too often, people aren’t sure what to say or do and feel that giving a person space is the right way forward. She advises that it is far better to simply greet them and ask how they are doing as it shows you care. Resident of Evergreen Lifestyle’s Broadacres retirement village Jean Spurr lived in a large house on an extensive property when she lost her husband very suddenly four years ago. “My two eldest children live in England, and they were unhappy with me being isolated. The security situation had deteriorated in the area, so they wanted me to move somewhere closer to town and with good facilities,” she explains. “It’s been a smooth transition in my life, which could have been completely different. I never had a moment to worry that I wouldn’t be taken care of. But it’s been a wonderful experience - from the staff and management to the people in the village - all the people I have met here have been fantastic. To top it off, we have a great social life.” Psychologist Marion Schroder says that while losing a partner is devastating and time needs to be taken to mourn the loss, it’s important to adjust to living life alone in a meaningful way, continuing to stay emotionally connected with others.

PROPERTY

According to Evergreen Lifestyle Village Manager Melanie Carstens, support and encouragement comes from all levels of staff and management - even residents. “One must be sensitive to the loss and give the person time to grieve at their own pace. We contact the resident as soon as we hear of someone’s passing. It’s important for residents and families to know that we are here if they need us - from the simple gesture of flowers and sympathy cards to attending the funeral as a show of support,” Carstens explains. “The rest of the village community will also always be informed of the loss, and we find that the support and encouragement from fellow residents is wonderful. People really care, which in time helps to assist the bereaved person to re-enter village life and join in on activities.” A Department of Social Development caregiver training manual on “care and services to older persons” explains that it is important to understand the significance of loss because of the “emotional overload” it can impose on an older person. However subtle or dramatic a loss may seem, it can lead to “mental confusion, disorientation and withdrawal”. Losing a family home, for example, can be a difficult experience as it means the loss of “familiar surroundings, long-time friends and possessions as well as control over one’s environment and schedule”. Elizabeth Ann Robertson moved into an Evergreen village in May 2017, shortly before her husband of 55 years died at the end of June. Living in a retirement village has made such a difference during her time of loss as she says you just need to step out of your apartment if you feel lonely and there will be someone to talk to. Activities such as movie and game nights and wine club have helped her form good friendships with other residents. aha MOMENTS! | 59

t was just after lunch that we arrived at aha Thakadu River Camp, after a quick three and half hour drive from Joburg (depending on how keen you are to get to the bush of course). Drive safe, take care and look out for potholes, animals and a few sneaky road officials along the way! The staff at aha Thakadu makes you feel like you just arrived home after being away on business for a few months. Smiles all round, handshakes and a warm towel with a complimentary welcome cocktail to put your mind at ease. The road in wasn’t built for Lambos and Sports cars. You could get away with a small SUV, but take your

time, enjoy the trip, its Africa, it’s beautiful, and it’s there to be admired! Madikwe really is a gem of a place, wellmanaged reserve; the Guides are next level clued up on everything from birds to trees and all the rest. On that note, thank you ‘Vince’ for showing us Wild Dogs, I love wild dogs and of course a few fat African Unicorns at a waterhole. We observed a massive herd of elephant, experienced the lions up close and personal, without making any animal ever feel uncomfortable, very professional. My wife isn’t a massive fan of birding, something I recently took a liking to, as my brother-in-law and my parents are keen birders (I didn’t know it was a thing really) To cut a long story short. The bird life is amazing at aha Thakadu, you can sit on your deck or in your bed and spot around 20 different birds species at any given time, some even make themselves right at home on your log patio. Which brings me to the rooms, or rather luxury first class tents is more like it. neighbour, the design and layout works perfectly for having a sneaky naked coffee on the balcony. We couldn’t , and didn’t do this because it was ice cold the entire weekend, but that did not stop us from going on every game drive, scared that we might miss something good. That, and we met these cool peeps from Switzerland and Spain that were pretty awesome, it was their first ‘Safari’ experience and we were fascinated at how excited they got from seeing something like a zebra, they loved it all! We then taught them a few mischievous Afrikaans sayings, I’m kidding we didn’t do that, but we should’ve. When you arrive at your tent at night after a game drive, a romantic dinner around the boma fire awaits; next level romantic, sounds of the African bush in the background and a glass of sherry to warm us up after the ride. king size bed, set the air-conditioning to about 30 degrees Celsius. We felt brilliant, it is just what we needed, our feet were freezing, but we hopped into a nice warm bed after a warm bath, yes there is a bath in the tent. Then you snuggle till the wakeup call comes at 5:30, yes there is landline phone in the tent too. You smash a quick coffee and a few rusks, I snuck some with, because I hate getting hungry, I get a bit grumpy. Then we spotted lions, elephants, we were taking over the animal kingdom! … Then our guide stopped randomly in a private secluded area in the reserve and packed out the snacks, served us coffee and low and behold, they had more rusks! I just love a good rusk. In the afternoons it’s the flipside to coffee and rusks, we talking about G’s and T’ (Gin & Tonic) sundowners for the win every

evening at a secluded spot, you can’t buy these sunsets. Trust me when I say, you are going to take so many selfies. Take pics, take more, and don’t delete any. You’re going to have an epic experience in the bush, it feels like you’re part of it, but in luxury, of course, I don’t like too much effort. Leaving aha Thakadu sucked big time! You have the feeling that we are going to miss out on all the excellent adventures in store, what if we went out one more time, or should we not maybe stay one more day and see if they have a Boma night again? Unfortunately, all things had to come to an end though. We want to thank the team at aha Thakadu River camp for their incredible service and dedication to making everyone have a good time. Our three year anniversary weekend was a blast, a romantic getaway of note.

enowned chocolatier Jacques Torres opens Choco-Story New York: The Chocolate Museum and Experience with Jacques Torres, Manhattan’s first chocolate museum located at the famed chocolatier’s Soho location on Hudson Street (350 Hudson Street). There visitors will discover the story of chocolate and its journey from tree to bar through original artefacts, nine premium tastings, kids’ corner and a chocolate bar making class, offering an educational – and delicious - hands-on experience for families, children, and chocolate lovers. “I’m so passionate about all things chocolate that I can think of nothing better than having the opportunity to share my knowledge and its history,” said Torres. For this venture, Jacques partnered with Eddy Van Belle, chocolate aficionado and founder of four other Choco-Story museums around the world, from Belgium to Uxmal. Of the partnership Torres said, “Creating an immersive experience in New York that would reflect our love of chocolate was our mutual goal.” Choco-Story New York traces the history of cacao and chocolate by telling the story of its origin and evolution through authentic artefacts from the Mayan and Aztec civilisations to nineteenth-century Europe and follows the timeline to the present. The story begins in 250 BC-900 AD with Mayas who discovered the cacao bean and cultivated the crop. Displays of pottery and knives bear witness to the fact that cacao was deemed a divine drink of the gods and was consumed during human sacrifices. The tale picks up in the 1500s when Aztec ruler Moctezuma first introduced cocoa to Cortés who shipped the beans to Spain, spurring the cultivation of cacao there and its ultimate pervasive spread across Europe. By the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, cacao was the drink of choice among nobility and displays at the museum show special drinking mugs such as a 1750 Spanish cup fashioned from coconut shell and silver. Featured objects include a pre-Columbian grinding stone from 500 AD, a ca. 1750-1800 horse-shaped chocolatecutter used to prepare chocolate pieces for drinks, and French Art Deco chocolate boxes from 1850. A separate area of Choco-Story chronicles the bean-to-bar journey starting with the cacao tree that originates from the Amazonian rainforest. This section of the museum explains the harvest of the cocoa pods, explores different varieties of beans and follows >>

the fermentation process that transforms them to the chocolate we know, love and consume with great passion. The 455-square-metre museum includes nine premium chocolate tastings consisting of blend and single origin chocolates in white, milk and dark varieties, original Mayan hot chocolate freshly ground by hand, and hand-made chocolate truffles. In addition to the museum tour tastings, taught by a professional chocolatier, customers may participate in a chocolate making class where they will be able to sample their own handiwork. The museum also features a kids’ corner, a fun, educational space where children can dig for “undiscovered artefacts” in a sand pit and play chocolate shop proprietor with a toy kitchen and cash register. Museum visitors can download the Choco-Story phone app that allows them to discover four virtual 3D animations during the visit of the museum by scanning one of the posters with their phone. As the Dean of Pastry Arts at The International Culinary Centre (ICC) Jacques has asked students to create a New York City skyline made from various milk and dark chocolate pieces, which will be featured in the museum. In addition, the students are creating a dark chocolate flowerbox filled with chocolate soil and handcrafted chocolate flowers.

Choco-Story New York is located at 350 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014 and is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Tickets are available for purchase at http:// www.mrchocolate.com/museum/. 74 | aha MOMENTS!

“Hello World” is Alice Rawsthorn’s definitive guide to design and modern life. Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. When deployed wisely, it can bring us pleasure, choice, strength, decency and much more. But if its power is abused, the outcome can be wasteful, confusing, humiliating, even dangerous. None of us can avoid being affected by design, whether or not we wish to. It is so ubiquitous that it determines how we feel and what we do, often without our noticing. “Hello World” explores design’s influence on our lives. “Hello World” is Alice Rawsthorn’s definitive guide to design and modern life. The author’s son Luke invites young readers or listeners on a journey asking various animals what they think the odd-looking creature is that he and a friend have found. Creative curve: how TO develop the right idea at the right time ALLEN GANNET A great idea isn’t a sudden light-bulb moment. It’s taking something familiar and making it feel new. We’re told stories about creative geniuses – the young Mozart who effortlessly overshadows the hardworking Salieri; Paul McCartney coming up with the tune for Yesterday in a dream one morning; JK Rowling finding inspiration for Harry Potter sitting on a train to London. What we aren’t told is the actual story behind such hits. In fact there is a science and method for mainstream success, whether writing a popular novel, starting a company or creating an effective marketing campaign, and in this book Allen Gannett – data wizard and successful entrepreneur – reveals the four laws of creativity that are proven to work. New ideas are surprising at first, and slowly become familiar as we get used to them. Allan Gannett reveals there’s a sweet spot between what feels familiar and safe to us, and what is innovative and new: the point of optimal tension between safety and surprise, similarity and difference. The people we think of as creative geniuses are people who understand this sweet spot instinctively; they know what people find familiar and reassuring, and they find ways to reinvent it fresh.
