MAYINE

GIN Text & Images: Supplied

M

ayine Premium Gin joined the world of craft gins in November 2017, after a full year of research and limited capital, their brand was born. The Khayelitsha duo attributes the success of this journey to their life experiences. “It is my gloomy upbringing that still forces me to go beyond my comfort zone,” says Luvuyo Jongile, managing director of Mayine Gin. “In 2015 I came across an interesting finding that identified Khayelitsha as one of the biggest markets for French cognac brand Hennessy. In the same year, Khayelitsha was named the most consuming area of Hennessy Cognac Brand in the entire African continent.” This discovery shocked and angered Luvuyo in a very positive way. “It was such an eye-opener for me when I realised that our townships are an untapped market with great potential. I saw an opportunity in not only growing to be a markets leader but to develop my very community in return and improve the township’s infrastructure and amongst other things. The other big win is job creation for township based individuals and enables most of our procurement spend to be on businesses that is in our community.

Black Owned Gin in

AFRICA

“my wife, Nodumo, began researching and experimenting with different infusions before settling on a rooibos-infused gin with a touch of honey as well as a grape-based gin that contains hints of buchu and citrus, which is distilled four times.”

The Journey Mayine Gin, meaning “Let it Rain!” is a product that tells a township story, a product that people are gratified of and connecting with at a very personal level. Essential to our existence and as one of our pillars is creating awareness around consuming alcohol in a very responsible manner. “It was a call for a product that people would be more connected to and something that black people can be proud of. We wanted to create something uniquely African by infusing traditional herbs like imphepho into a gin that people can relate. There are incredible stories and rich history behind our herbs.” “Being a passionate gin fan, my wife and I, Nodumo, began researching and experimenting with different infusions before settling on a rooibos-infused gin with a touch of honey as well as a grapebased gin that contains hints of buchu and citrus, which is distilled four times. Both flavours are competing relatively well, as they are selling at the same rate.” For the gin couple, their worst battle was not getting the business off the ground as they paired themselves with an experienced

distiller. “We were so fortunate to meet the owner of Woodstock Gin Co, Simon, whom we are subcontracting with as our distiller but using our recipe. We met the owner of the Woodstock Gin Co at a gin festival, and while tasting his gin, we talked about the township market and how that was our target market. As we were explaining our vision to him, we connected, and since then he has been a great guide for our business.” Says Jongile. One year and R200 000 later – all self-funded – the couple launched Mayine Gin. The event was held at the 4Roomed restaurant in Khayelitsha last November. “We were privileged to have the Provincial Minister of Human Settlement in the Western Cape and Cllr Siyabulela Mamkeli as our guest speakers and the venue was filled to capacity.” “Our ultimate goal is to establish the first gin distillery at the centre of Khayelitsha within the next two years so we can start producing the gin ourselves and create jobs for residents.” Mayine holdings also have plans to open a restaurant next to the distillery in a further bid to drive tourism in his neighbourhood. aha MOMENTS! | 15

Lupita Nyong’o is not just an actress.

She’s a force. Text Lisa Witepski | Images © Shutterstock

mma Stone. Jennifer Lawrence. Scarlett Johannesen. These are the A-listers of our time; the women whose hairstyles are endlessly copied; whose latest fitness regimes encourage a slew of Instagram #thinspo posts, and whose red carpet fashions will be endlessly reinterpreted by a coterie of wannabees. And then there’s Lupita Nyong’o. She’s nothing like her peers. Yes, the blue dress she wore in 2014 at the 86th Annual Academy Awards (the first time that many film enthusiasts became aware of her existence) has become the stuff that sartorial legends are made of. Yes, she has graced one magazine cover after another. Yes, she is every bit as influential as any other star out there – but for Lupita, almost all these achievements are prefaced by a question mark; a sense of curiosity, if not wonder that someone so very far from the Hollywood mould could be ruling as one of its present-day queens. As she has said, “I know that this industry was not made for me. But I’m not going to apologise for being here.”

aha MOMENTS! | 17

Why this sense of displacement? Let’s start with her decidedly unHollywood upbringing: born in Mexico City in 1983, her parents Peter and Dorothy had left their native Kenya because of political unrest. So tumultuous was this time that, according to Wikipedia, her uncle, Charles, was attacked on a ferry because of Peter’s vocal opposition to Daniel Arap Moi’s regime. Although Charles’ body was never found, Peter kept his political ideals within sight – and in 2017, he was appointed the governor of Kisumu County in Kenya. His outlook undoubtedly had a tremendous impact on Lupita’s own sense of social justice – but more about that later. Lupita’s family had returned to Kenya in time for her to blow out the candle on her first birthday cake – but their stint in Mexico had left a deeper imprint that goes beyond their daughter’s Spanish name (Lupita was named after Guadalupe, as her Luo tribe follow a custom of naming children for current events). It also planted the seed for further education, and Lupita returned to the country to learn Spanish when she was 16. Her interest in acting was already well entrenched by this stage; perhaps because she and her five siblings often took part in the kind of impromptu performances that are commonplace in families with a bohemian bent. She had made her first professional stage appearance at the age of 14, in the Nairobi acting company Phoenix Players’ production of Romeo and Juliet. It was a dramatic (excuse the pun) place to start – but Lupita’s projects have not become any more light-hearted. To the contrary; in a world obsessed with carbohydrate intake and relationship goals, Lupita’s name seems to be inextricably linked to the causes of our time. Her first professional project – working as a production assistant rather than an actress – was the pull-no-punches The Constant Gardener. After her first on-screen appearance (in the short film East River; notable for its complete lack of dialogue), she turned her attention to a UNICEF/MTV Base project, Suga. Then came In My Genes, a documentary about the discrimination experienced by albinos in Kenya. The project was a true showcase of her diverse talents, as she wrote, produced and directed the piece, winning enormous acclaim in the process – in fact, it earned her the first award to adorn her mantlepiece, first prize at the 2008 Five College Film Festival. The next prize was, of course, an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; one of several nominations Lupita received for her extraordinarily emotive portrayal of Patsey in 12 Years A Slave. The award ushered in a series of firsts for the actress: she became the first African actress, and the first Mexican, to win the award (as well as the sixth black actress to take the title). She’s also the first Kenyan to win an Oscar, and one of only 15 actresses to win an Oscar for their debut performances. Of course, anyone who had watched the film could not help noticing that Lupita had been blessed with an introspective lens that brings gravitas to all she does. It’s a quality that’s distinctly at odds with a personality that relishes the kind of innocent playfulness and hunger for learning that characterises childhood, and which her friends believe to be her defining feature. And yet, that gravitas was once more on display during her Oscar acceptance speech: “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance,” she famously declared. The speech was memorable for another reason, too: it pushed society just a little further into a state of wokeness, dwelling as it did on how it feels to grow up not only as a black girl but as a black girl 18 | aha MOMENTS!

“ I k n ow th at this i n d u str y w a s n ot m a de for me . B ut I’m not goi ng to a p o l o gis e f o r b e i n g h e r e .” in a world where lightness – even amongst other black people – is viewed as an insurmountable flaw. “Around me, the preference for light skin prevailed, to the beholders that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me; you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you. These words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until I finally realised that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be. And what my mother meant when she said that you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you... When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” And, just like that, an icon – a dark-skinned icon who flaunts her natural hair – was born. Lupita’s subsequent choice of roles and after-hours activities have done much to entrench this status. There was her heavily awarded stage role in Eclipsed, where she played an unnamed girl in the Second Liberian Civil War, and a return to film with a role in Queen of Katwe, about a Ugandan Chess genius. Then she travelled to a galaxy far, far away, appearing in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, before lighting up the screen in one of the most successful films of all time, Black Panther. Indeed, her choice of roles has made sure it’s almost impossible not to mention the words ‘Lupita’ and ‘badass’ in the same sentence. While she’s not creating positive female role models onscreen, she’s doing so in real life. Her major project for 2018 is penning a children’s book: titled Sulwe: the story seems uncannily true to life as it follows a young girl growing up in Kenya, outlining her journey from the self-doubt that plagues her (largely as a result of her dark skin) to self-acceptance. This isn’t the first time Lupita’s words have been a clarion call for girls and women. In the midst of the #MeToo storm, she wrote of her own experiences with Harvey Weinstein in TheGuardian.com: “...fortunately for me, I have not dealt with any such incidents in the business since. And I think it is because all the projects I have been a part of have had women in positions of power, along with men who are feminists in their own right and who have not abused their power. What I am most interested in now is combating the shame we go through that keeps us isolated and allows for harm to be done. I wish I had known that there are women in the business I could have talked to. That justice could have been served. There is clearly power in numbers. I thank the women who have spoken up and given me the strength to revisit this unfortunate moment in my past…Our business is complicated because intimacy is part and parcel of our profession; as actors, we are paid to do very intimate things in public. That’s why someone can have the audacity to invite you to their home or hotel, and you show up. Precisely because of this we must stay vigilant and ensure that

the professional intimacy is not abused. I hope we are at a pivotal moment where a sisterhood – and brotherhood of allies – is being formed in our industry. I hope we can form a community where a woman can speak up about abuse and not suffer another abuse by not being believed and instead being ridiculed…” This is only one example of Lupita’s activism; she is also a campaigner for

historic preservation, wildlife conservation and issues surrounding the treatment of birthing mothers. Credit for this brave spirit goes, unequivocally, to the star’s parents. In a post dedicated to her father on the day he took office as governor of Kisumu, Lupita wrote, “To celebrate this day from afar, I reflect on the Ten Things My Daddy Taught Me When I Was A Kid That Gave Me Confidence”, number four is “Do whatever

you want to do; just do it to excellence. Dreaming out loud was something he really encouraged. He loved listening to my bold and sometimes unrealistic and romantic ideas. He did that for all his kids. Together with my mom, my father taught me to dare to imagine a world, and go about making it a reality.” We love the world Lupita has imagined and has set about creating. aha MOMENTS! | 19

Taking African art to the WORLD

T

ravelling Art Gallery, an artists’ initiative that plans to take South African art to three German cities during June and July 2018, has successfully raised R266 000 on the global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The passion project has captured the imagination of both the South African and German public, with pledges coming in from around the world to endorse its aim of raising the profile of 22 | aha MOMENTS!

South African art abroad. “We were very proud to be accepted onto Kickstarter, the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects, and are so excited that we met our funding goal within the 30 days we were given,” says Cape Town gallery owner Barbara Lenhard, who helped to launch the initiative in early March. “The aim of The Travelling Art Gallery is to take South African art to the world,

and to invite the world back to South Africa,” explains Barbara. “Our successful crowdfunding campaign means we have 25% of the operational costs we need to get the project off the ground, and we can now go full steam ahead to make the dream a reality. Art adds so much value to our society and helps to bring so many positive elements together.” The Travelling Art Gallery will take

between 60 to 70 art works to Germany for at least four weeks during June and July, setting up pop-up exhibitions in hip locations in cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Mannheim. Each city exhibition will last for between eight and 10 days and will be supported by a glamorous opening night party and a nationwide PR campaign to pull in as large an audience as possible. “Our project is a collaboration between South African artists who want us to show their art to an international audience,” explains Barbara. “As a German who has lived in Cape Town for nearly 10 years now, I am passionate about sharing the amazing art created in South Africa with Germany.

I believe this is a project that can have so many wonderful spin-offs for the local art and tourism sector, as Europeans who visit the exhibitions will be inspired to visit the country to see more of what it has to offer. Our pop-ups will showcase a good mix of established artists and emerging talent and will create a wonderful platform for local artists who can’t otherwise afford to take their art to an overseas market.” The private project is now looking for sponsors in South Africa and Germany to help fund the rest of the costs involved. “I’m a firm believer in the principle of working together to make great things happen,” says Barbara. “We’re looking for

companies to join the initiative with small sponsorship packages of either 5000 or 15000 Euros. This will help us to transport, exhibit and promote the art to German audiences – and in turn will offer companies the chance to engage with an interested, cultural audience. Art is always a talking point, and with South African art there’s still so much to be discovered. Pop-up events provide vibrant, modern spaces in which to interact with customers and the exhibitions will provide companies with ample opportunities for marketing, brand-building and customer relationship activities. We believe it will be an exciting alliance for everyone involved.” aha MOMENTS! | 23

DESIGN

The Future of the Workspace with Hassan Shaikh By Megan Ross | Images © Supplied

H

assan Shaikh is no ordinary designer. As the founder of Revolve, a specialist corporate and retail interior design strategy agency, Hassan has made a career of interrogating the way we conceive of work space design, and spurred South African designers and architects to not only keep abreadst of international trends, but to set our own. We chatted to the pioneer, entrepreneur and dad about the future of our office spaces. In the last decade, we have seen the shift from cubicle-like spaces to open-plan offices, from 9-5 jobs to flexi-hours, with many more people opting to freelance in communal office spaces. Are there more changes that we can expect? I believe it’s going to be very much a natural progression from where workplace design is at currently, but the changes will definitely be moving toward more people centric spaces, flexible spaces or activity-based spaces and technology inclusion to facilitate higher productivity and flexibility. Any effective workplace solution is customised to the client and is the key in delivering a space that allows progression. With that being said, we are starting to see this progression, especially with technology, and as the costs of this technology becomes more palatable and the access to hardware and software improves, that’s when things are going to get really exciting. Technology integration is going to be the biggest change, for the better, to the workplace. What are the implications for freelancers or those who employ a fewer number of people? With the options and availability of so many amazing co-working spaces in South Africa, it’s a great time to have the opportunity to choose where you can work from. Co-working spaces offer so much more than just managing overheads for office space costs. They offer spaces that facilitate connectivity with other like-minded people which really helps when someone works independently for a lot of their day or even when staff work remotely. Co-working spaces are a great example of activity-based workplaces. People have the choice for working in open plan if they want, work in small or larger groups or moving into a small quiet room (office) if they need to do concentration work. 24 | aha MOMENTS!

You started the first–ever workplace design vlog in South Africa. Do South African designers and architects bring something intrinsically different to the design sphere, especially where workplace design is concerned? Having had experience working abroad, it’s become very evident to me on my return that our South African work culture is pretty unique. And I’m not saying that we don’t need best practices that have been proven to work as a guide, I’m saying that we need to adapt those for us so that it supports our culture. The aim for the vlog was to start examining and discussing South African workplace culture so we, as designers, can start designing for South Africans. Now that workplaces are being acknowledged more as a tool that supports business, organisations and staff are able to leverage off workplace design to do more than just facilitate a place of work but also attract talent, retain staff and provide a healthy environment for people to be in. In which areas do you think South African designers and architects could start improving and enhancing the way that they conceive of work spaces? Having multiple generations in our current workplace is a challenge for people centric workplaces. Different generation prefer different ways of working and cannot always be accommodated for in its entirety. The trending concept of large centralised offices into the CBD’s, that do not apply options for remote working and other creative ways of working, are a bit counterproductive and still follow a more traditional approach to our workplaces.

What are the key principles you apply to any new design project? These are my fundamentals: •

Benchmark: When engaging with a new client, make sure you know what they have in terms of values and resources, in order to better understand where they want to be. Current workplaces are always your starting point.

Understanding: Listen more than you talk when receiving a brief from your client. The value you add as a designer is only as good as your understanding of what the clients wants.

Engage: Talk to the people in the organisation across every level. Apart from the information that you get from the project team for the achievables of the project, the most valuable information comes from the people on the ground. This process also creates inclusion and a sense of ownership for everyone, which is really a big win for the organisation.

Deliver: Always deliver what you said you are going to deliver. You are as only as good as your last project.

How will the development and commercialisation of AI and similar technologies influence how designers conceive of work spaces? Currently, technology has had a major impact on our daily lives with people having access to information and tools to make life more convenient and keeping us

connected. With easily accessible mobile phone technology, people can book accommodation, arrange transport and even do their groceries and banking with absolute ease. Further than that, technology has even been a part of revolutions and that is a tool that is very powerful. The workplace, however, has been a little more conservative, but this change is now becoming more inevitable. The use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are changing how we design, and also how we work. Describe your dream work space. For me flexibility is so essential for the high levels of productivity I need to output to be an effective partner to my clients. Having to travel to and from various sites, clients and suppliers during the work day doesn’t give me the flexibility I need to have a space to work unless it’s a coffee shop or at the client or supplier. This actually amounts to a loss of time and productivity. What I would love is the opportunity to book a seat via an app on my mobile phone around the CBD and out of traffic when I do travel for meetings, to just touchdown and catch up on emails and the likes. It’s sort of like an Airbnb or Uber for workplace, which could actually be an extension of my offices. This space can be used by anyone who would require a similar space, especially when the traffic is gridlocked into the CBD. This provides a choice of either checking into the space and being productive or sitting in traffic for an hour or two, or even more, depending on which city you are in. My choice is not traffic.

ESSENCE

celebrating Malcolm Marx Our SA Rugby Player of the Year is so much more than a gifted sportsman: he’s a serious team player; down-to-earth, and above all, a loving and devoted son. By Megan Ross | Images © Lions Rugby Company/ Deon van der Merwe

I

n February, you told Sport24 that you consider your numerous sports awards as belonging not just to you, but to your entire team. What has being part of high profile sports team taught you about yourself? A team sport is just that, a team effort. I consider myself incredibly lucky and blessed because I not only get to do what I love, but I get to do it with my teammates who have become my brothers, and who I have been 28 | aha MOMENTS!

able to grow alongside over the years. Being in a team sport has taught me humility, and has taught me the true meaning of support for one another on and off the field. What was it like to win SA Rugby Player of the Year, keeping in mind that you are only 23 years old, and it is an accolade that legends like John Smit and Bismarck du Plessis have never been awarded? It was an incredible honour for me to

take home the win, and it was a moment I will forever cherish. To be recognised alongside some of the greatest names in the industry, that I admire, it’s surreal to be acknowledged on that sort of level. I still consider myself that same rugby player trying to do his best and one that still has lots to learn. But I have to acknowledge that my success is a team effort and I have an incredible support system including my mom, my family and my girlfriend.

No matter the fame, the money, the public praise, I am still just Malcolm and I am still Bernadine’s son, who appreciates every moment for what it is.

This was in addition to your winning SA Young Player of the Year as well as the Super Rugby Player of the Year awards – if someone had told you a year ago that this was the kind of recognition you could expect, would you have believed them? When I got involved with rugby, it was a decision for me; my passion, a challenge; in a way for me to improve. It was never a choice I made for the recognition and the fame. There’s still so many things that surprise me on a daily basis, and I will never take the awards or my position in the team for granted. Which aspects of your game are you working on? Every day is different, and I take the challenge face on and give my all to do the best of my ability. I’ll never be the perfect rugby player, but I will always make sure that I make my family and myself proud.

You made your debut for the Springboks against the All Blacks in 2016. In the short time since then, a mere two years, you have achieved an incredible amount. How has this professional success shifted or influenced the way you see yourself, both on and off the field? The funny thing about being in the public eye, is that people will always create an image of you in their mind, of what they think I am like and who I am, and most of the time I am seen as a very tough guy, but personally, I see myself as the same guy I was many years ago, who loves his friends and family and enjoys playing golf and going out on the dam. When I am on the rugby field, I have a job to do, a task, and I know what is expected of me, and I will always ensure I give a hundred percent of my effort to that, but I don’t see myself as any different to anyone else. aha MOMENTS! | 29

My mom is my biggest supporter in life, and everything I do, on and off the field, is for her… my hero!

You have been quoted as saying that “the modern hooker requires an allround game.” Is this something at the forefront of your mind during games and while you train? Each position is tasked with different responsibilities on the field, and it requires different skills and different sets of play, but as a rugby player, there is so much expected of you physically, that being an all-rounder with the additional specified skills can only work in one’s favour. Why do you encourage this dynamic approach to the position? As a hooker, you’re always seen at the rough and tough man in front of the scrums, the not-so-glamorous position, but when it comes to skill, being a hooker is very strategic and requires hours of training and practice. Everyone tends to usually go for a more running-position, and I want to encourage more boys to want to become hookers and embrace the challenges it poses. Let’s talk about your support system. In a recent interview, you spoke about growing up with a single mom. Did this prepare you in any way for such a high-profile career? My mom has truly made me the man I am today; she has brought me up to be humble, kind and appreciate everything that is not only given to me, but earned. No matter the fame, the money, the public praise, I am still just Malcolm and I am still Bernadine’s son, who appreciates every moment for what it is. How has your mother’s strength and resilience shaped your personality and how you treat others? My mom set the example for me, from a very young age. She is the epitome of strength and kindness. She has not only endured some of the hardest struggles in life, but she did it with a smile and happiness in her heart! She is my biggest supporter in life. Everything I do, on and off the field, is for her… She is my hero! 30 | aha MOMENTS!

or some, setting a foot onboard an aircraft remains a wild dream. Orphaned children from the Ikageng Shelter for Boys and the Khanya Khaya Shelter for Girls were beyond thrilled when Tourvest Travel Services, a member of integrated tourism group Tourvest treated them to a getaway in Durban on the 13th to the 15th of March 2018 as part of the group’s social responsibility. The drive aims to introduce underprivileged children to the wonderful world of travel. The homes are both based in Vereeniging and take care of destitute and abandoned children between the ages of seven and 18. TTS is one of South Africa’s largest providers of travel management services and includes sector-leading brands such as Seekers Travel, American Express Global Business Travel, Maties Travel, Indojet Travel, Travel.co.za and TravelIT. Joining TTS in this initiative were travel partners British Airways/ Comair, car rental company Europcar as well as sister company aha Hotels & Lodges, the tourism property management arm of Tourvest’s Accommodation and Activities division. The children were met by the team from TTS and BA/Comair staff when they arrived at OR Tambo International Airport. Treats involved bags filled with gifts they would need for their holiday, the boys were given rucksacks, and the girls received beach bags. One of 38 | aha MOMENTS!

the highlights for the children was the warm welcome they received from the captain of the flight and the round of applause from their fellow passengers when they boarded the flight. Europcar chauffeurs transported the children from the airport to the aha Gateway Hotel as the first stop on the trip. After that, the children were whisked to the beach, Gateway Mall for dinner, ten pin bowling and to the movie theatre to watch the blockbuster Black Panther movie. Tourvest Travel Services’ chief executive Morné du Preez said, “their two-day trip was packed with fun new experiences, including a wonderful tour of uShaka Marine World where they were treated to a variety of shows and an educational experience. This was the first time these children have ever been on an aeroplane, stayed in a hotel or, for most, set foot in the ocean.” “The reason for a trip like this is to give these children the opportunity to experience something most of us take for granted. To see the smiles on their faces and to know that we had a small part to play in making their dreams come true is beyond rewarding. This trip also showed these children what an exciting prospect a career in travel could be. It ties in perfectly with our long-standing learnership programme, which has helped over 200 disadvantaged learners take their first step in a career in travel and tourism.”

N

urturing and guiding our future leaders is of fundamental importance to aha. We want to play a vital role in initiatives that involves shaping the minds of young people and showing them the opportunities that are available to them through education. Our goal is to emphasise the importance of education and encourage our learners to pursue careers that they are passionate about. aha hosted Grade 10 learners from Kwena Molapo Secondary School through our “Host a learner” initiative which takes place annually. The school is situated 2km from the Lanseria Airport and enrols about 60% of the learners from Diepsloot’s informal settlements, 38% comes from the Thabo Mbeki informal settlements and 2% from around the Lanseria plots. The “Host a learner” campaign is not gendered and through this initiative, learners get an opportunity to visit a workplace and experience the various career opportunities available in business. On 8 March 2018, 10 enthusiastic learners visited our head office in Rivonia, where they spent a few hours in the workplace. The HR team gave the learners an extensive tour of aha where they interacted with professionals in various departments such as Human Resources and Learning and Development, Finance, Procurement, Business Development, Legal and Marketing and Sales to understand the different functions of each department. The learners gained considerable insight into the different career paths. The HR team also provided them with insightful presentations and career guiding information. aha Group HR Manager Nando Legasa says there are so many career opportunities that young people are not even aware of. Most students are only aware of the obvious traditional career choices, and that is usually the basis of how they choose their subjects in grade 10. In most cases, these lead to mundane career choices and sometimes failure. If you ask working people how many of them actually love what they do, very few will answer yes. We ultimately hope to equip these young people with enough information and exposure to make the right decision regarding their future career aspirations.” We also hope to simultaneously steer them towards the tourism and hospitality industry with its countless career opportunities. aha Hotels & Lodges CEO Neil Bald says the company’s contribution towards the “Host a Learner” campaign is of substantial value and contribution to its continuing endorsement of education, skills development and job creation and would like more properties to engage with schools within their communities and afford the learners with such an opportunity. One of aha’s continuous CSI initiative is the aha Lesedi Beading Ladies at aha Lesedi project, pioneered by mama Girly Leah Ntuli and mama Bongiwe Elizabeth Masombuka. The beautiful creations they produce signify the amaNdebele and amaZulu culture. Their career at aha Lesedi began in 1999 and shortly thereafter they expressed a keen interest in sharing their knowledge of beading and its significance with the multitude of local and international tourists

that make their way to aha Lesedi each year. aha recognised that this artistic talent needs to be supported and developed therefore the company presented the ladies with business support services in order to help them formalise their trade and assisted with infrastructure support by providing them with a workshop and store at the aha Lesedi market. They also received their first official business loan which went towards purchasing their raw materials; aha also covers expenses such as their rent, electricity and security. The agreement includes an undertaking that their products will be supplied to various aha Hotels & Lodges as signature aha guest gifts, which turned out to be a resounding success. Through the years Girly and Bongiwe have produced hundreds of custom-made designs, ranging from elaborate beadwork costumes and body accessories (as worn by the aha Lesedi traditional dancers) dolls and jewellery to various ornaments such as beaded ties and branded passport covers. The ladies creativity is endless, and their designs are as unique as one can get. aha Lesedi guests and patrons are sure to walk away with a select product with every purchase.

MAIN L OD G E By Caroline Hurry | Images ©Supplied

CAROLINE HURRY reports on the recently-unveiled main lodge at the 26,000ha Makalali Private Reserve west of the Kruger Park

U

rbane in a contemporary African kind of way, the 5 star Makalali Main Lodge is more hip design hotel than traditional safari camp. You won’t find old Colonial pith helmets or hunting trophies here, just a sense of light, space and clean lines encouraging flow between the airy interiors and wild outdoors. A library where you can kick back with a book enhances the calm, unhurried atmosphere. Dry stone columns, huge fireplaces and wild sisal rugs add an elemental feel to the overall modern freshness with luscious touches of lime in the cushions, back walls and witty African sculptures with hints of the Tswana vernacular. Built from natural materials, much of it sourced from the banks of the Makhutswi River, the Lodge is understated, yes, but still chic. Stylish, and authentic in its artful simplicity, there’s a sense of being rooted in the culture of the land, an ethos continued in the seasonal menu that offers traditional African fare such as grilled crocodile or lamb curry served in an open-air boma, or on the wooden deck under a diamond-studded night sky. Of course, the real stars here are the affable staff that has a very apparent passion for what they do…it is a lifestyle, not a job. Our superior room, one of 30, felt welcoming in a neutral palette to allow the fantastic view from our floor to ceiling glass sliding doors take centre stage. Dawn’s finger beckoned with a blushing sky as we left on a game drive where we found a bull elephant, two lions and a journey of 23 giraffes that eyed us curiously as we drank our Amarula-laced coffee in the bush, once the lions had moved on. On other drives we saw a jackal, more lions, hippo, rhino, and a python in a tree, with marvellous bird sightings of African hoopoes, woodland kingfishers,

yellow-billed hornbills and a hammerkop, a brown stork-like bird that keeps its eggs in a big untidy nest decorated with old bones and shiny found objects. Local legend dictates that a family member will die if a hammerkop flies over their hut but this one was simply surveying, as were we, wildebeest and zebra chilling on the plains together. Theirs is a symbiotic relationship. Not only do they eat different parts of the grass but the zebra’s good eyesight and wildebeest’s excellent hearing boosts the survival chance of both species against predators. Mongooses and hornbills also enjoy a symbiotic relationship, the latter acting as sentries for the little mammals, calling if there is danger. There’s a lot to be said for pooling skills. Talking of pools, Makalali’s large crystal blue rim flow pool is spectacular when lit up at night, although earlier aha MOMENTS! | 43

we thought twice about swimming as a proprietary baboon seemed to have annexed it from the edge. We gasped when a warthog family suddenly burst out of their burrow leaving clouds of dust in their wake – mum and dad bolting in one direction, then piglet squealing off in another. Warthogs go backwards into their burrows so they can use their tusks, easily sharp enough to slice off a finger, against any predator foolish enough to enter but that’s definitely not the way they emerge. We saw lion, cheetah, rhino, hippo, jackal, kudu, waterbuck, giraffe and even a civet stalking something in the tawny grass. Just west of the Kruger Park, Makalali Private Game Reserve is an hour’s drive from Hoedspruit and its airport. 44 | aha MOMENTS!

I

fell in love with Makalali years ago. Conceived by architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, alpha leaders of the safari lodge design pack, Tatler Travel awarded it Most Innovative Hotel Design of the Year for its rugged Moroccan-style thatched spires, earthy walls, and ancient artefacts. That was back in the 1990s, but today Makalali Private Reserve is better than ever after a sensational refurb. Having

spent a night at the intimate River Lodge, deep in my comfort zone amid swathes of jackalberry and sycamore fig trees on the edge of Makhutswi River, I’m thrilled to report that owners, aha Hotels & Lodges, retained its authentic safari charm in the recent style reboot. Now there are bright pops of colour, lemon yellow or orange cushions lifting the taupe palette that blends in with the surrounding bushveld,

but the star of the show is the indoor shower and free-standing bath. Actually, the outdoor shower is pretty sensational too, but what I appreciated was the personal note addressed to my husband and me, and toiletries thoughtfully packed in glass bottles, as befits Makalali’s reputation as being one of the leading pioneers in Ecotourism in South Africa. Apart from the en-suite bathroom, aha MOMENTS! | 45

outdoor shower, enormous bed and fireplace, each Luxury Suite has a raised, private timber viewing deck (sala) from which to observe the birds or enjoy a preprandial drink overlooking the Makhutswi River below. Guests are treated to up-close glimpses of nyala that come down to graze on the banks of the dry river and monkeys swinging from the branches of a sycamore fig tree. We enjoyed two game drives with our ranger Isaac Mdluli and tracker Anton Ubisse and saw a pride of lion basking in the afternoon sun, a rather skittish jackal, both black and white rhino, impala, kudu, giraffe and plenty of zebras. Dinners of kudu steaks, salad and Malva pudding served in an open-air boma under the stars; the area lit by flickering lanterns and pit fire. All that is natural, pure and pristine about Africa is right here on your doorstep; you need to soak it up. Guests enjoyed two game drives (morning and afternoon) in open vehicles to observe these wild animals in their natural habitat.

THE PERFORMANCE CONNOISSEUR

RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR By Deon van der Walt | Images: © Driven Mag

The Range Rover Sport SVR is best described as the mechanical embodiment of Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Time to Say Goodbye’, reckons DEON VAN DER WALT.

I

t is graceful, elegant, and dramatic – in a tread-carefully-or-it-may-bite sort of way. Its character changes when you nudge the accelerator pedal, and the engine thrums ‘We Will Rock You’. Press the accelerator pedal into the carpet, however, and all symphonic elements are shoved aside, exchanged for a savage V8 baritone that will make other motorists take note of this special vehicle’s imminent arrival. It is becoming an increasingly popular formula: manufacturers take a middle-of-theroad SUV, tinker under the bonnet, add a set of overly aggressive wheels, wrap said wheels with a thin strip of rubber and sketch a few oversized air-intakes into the design just for good measure – and better airflow. The result then usually amounts to something so staggering that on numbers alone supercars only live in its shadow. In this segment, the BMW X5M has always set the benchmark in both the performance and dynamic categories, while the MercedesAMG GLE63 S trumps everything in the performance-figure columns. The problem, however, is that while it is all imposing on paper and tarmac, none of the German titans have that bespoke distinction going for them quite like the Range Rover Sport SVR. WAIT, IS THAT AN SVR? Through the years, the classic Range Rover look has steadily evolved. From Land Rover’s first Range Rover Prototype Velar in 1969, which by today’s standards looks like an agricultural implement with a splash of luxury paint, to today’s SVR – the design recipe has not changed much. The exterior styling of Range Rovers is pleasantly 48 | aha MOMENTS!

DRIVE

understated and tasteful – and in that department, the SVR hits the metaphorical nail right on the head. Besides some subtle SVR badging, there are also a set of blue brake callipers that handle the business of bringing the massive 21” wheels to a hurried stop, while a pair of ventilation holes atop the bonnet goes about cooling the brakes. At the front, there is also a Range Rover Sport-specific air-intake grille that gulps mighty amounts of air as you drive, while the back plays host to a two-stage exhaust system that flaunts four pipes protruding from the body. STILL BUSINESS ON THE INSIDE Few manufacturers know how to chisel a bespoke cabin-space quite like the luxury boffins at Range Rover, and as you would expect, no expense was spared to fuse timeless luxury with bang-up-todate gadgetry. We especially like the digital instrument cluster that presents all essential driving information in a modern and easy-tonavigate manner. You are also always aware of the SUV’s athletic prowess as SVR insignias are subtly placed across the cabin. From an SVR greeting on the infotainment system when the ignition turns over, to the seatbacks which have SVR emblems stitched into them. And speaking of seats, the Range Rover Sport is marketed as a five-seater, but only four are truly functional. See, to emphasise its sportiness – and arguably upset all luxury convention – the seats have been fashioned after body-hugging racing seats, whereafter it was enveloped in a layer of luxury. The result is some of the most comfortable seats we’ve ever sampled. Unfortunately, it does not come without a chink in the armour: because of the prominent seat design, getting in and out for the taller species of passengers can prove to be difficult, especially when the front occupants are also of the loftier variety.

UNLEASHING THE BEAST The Range Rover Sport SVR leaves a lasting impression from the moment you press the Stop/Start button and the savage V8 roars to life. The dramatic growl soon dies down, though, and it becomes a comfortable cruiser throatily burbling along with your throttle inputs. It is not too content with this constant cruising about business for too long, as the 423 kW and 700 Nm eggs you on, challenges you, to press that accelerator ever-so-slightly towards the carpet. It is best not to take the bait, since the **bakkie** over there, can be over here, in only a matter of seconds. Soon, however, an off-ramp presents itself, and so too does an opportunity to test just how quickly it can reach the national speed limit. Short answer; it only takes an instant. Flick the gear lever left into sport mode, and you feel the available power through the seat of your pants. Press the accelerator pedal, and all hell breaks loose. You are shoved into the seatback as it leaps forward with the ferocity of a nuclear explosion. The exhaust note changes from a burble to mechanical thunder, coupled with the singing from the supercharger unit. And just like that, the SVR takes care of the zero to 100 km/h sprint in only 4.5 seconds. IN CLONCLUSION The Range Rover Sport SVR is a bit of an odd duckling compared to its competitors. It is not as poised and focused as the BMW X5M through tight corners, nor is it as quick in a straight-line sprint as the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S. So, you might ask, what is the point? Well, for starters, the SVR is by far the most luxurious of these top-tier performance SUVs, and then there is the big C-word: Character. And that itself is a rare quality these days.

Responsible for its white wines, she is currently completing her first harvest for this famous Paarl winery, one of South Africa’s most pedigreed. “I have big boots to fill, having to match and continue the immense standard of winemaking so firmly in place at Nederburg,” she explains, referring to her predecessor Natasha Boks who was intimately involved with the making of some of Nederburg’s most awarded white and dessert wines over the past five years, such as The Anchorman Chenin Blanc 2016, an interesting expression of the variety that won it a place in the 2017 Standard Bank Top 10 Chenin Blanc Challenge, as well as 52 | aha MOMENTS!

the title of best South African Chenin blanc priced at over ₤15 at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards. Elmarie says she’s having the time of her life, despite having to work 16-hour days during harvest-time, alongside cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough, red-wine maker Samuel Viljoen, as well as assistant white- and red-wine makers Chandré Petersen and Heinrich Kulsen. “There’s nothing more exciting than seeing the first grapes come into the cellar for a new vintage of wine to be made. The anticipation is palpable. And seeing wine evolve from soil to bottle is incredible! “I’m cautiously excited about what the 2018 harvest will deliver in eventual wine quality, despite challenges mainly presented by the ongoing drought. Yet, every vintage comes with its own unique set of problems requiring solutions – and that’s

something I welcome. I find the uncertainty strangely invigorating. It’s literally like a thirst for discovery and knowing more.” What does she enjoy most? “Worthwhile challenges, nature that sustains us all, and really good wine.” It’s no wonder Elmarie fell in love with the idea of winemaking while on a cellar tour as a grade 11 learner. “My senses were instantly awakened, and that was it. Then and there I decided to enrol for the BSc Viticulture and Oenology degree programme offered at Stellenbosch University.” Elmarie, who grew up in the Cape Winelands and completed her secondary schooling at the prestigious Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof in Stellenbosch, knew that it would be a demanding industry. Determined and dilligent, Elmarie credits her parents’ as her inspiration. “My parents worked very hard to ensure

that my engineer brother and I could reach our dreams.” After completing her studies, Elmarie’s journey into winemaking took off with a short harvest at Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, followed by stints at Groot Constantia, Steenberg, Kanonkop and Jordan as an intern. Showing great promise, in 2011 she was chosen to complete a three-year internship with the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) as part of its Protégé Programme. “I was privileged to work alongside exceptional winemakers and had the opportunity to taste some remarkable local and international wines.” The 43 Bush Pinotage is the name of the wine she made during her time as a protégé – the first wine she could call her own, and a highlight of her career thus far. “I loved making this wine! It provided me with the opportunity to handle every step of the winemaking process myself, from sampling and picking of the grapes to receiving it in the cellar and processing it, punch-downs, bottling, and labelling. This gave me a real appreciation for the role that each and every person in the vineyard and the cellar plays in the process.” In 2013, Elmarie embraced an opportunity to experience a harvest in France, where she assisted with making Chardonnay at Domain Pattes Loup in Courgis, Chablis. “This unforgettable experience showed me just how fascinating the process of winemaking can be. It piqued a new level of curiosity in me. While in France, I was also very fortunate to visit the worldfamous Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy. It was fabulous - they made me feel so welcomed, despite the language barrier! I’d still like to travel to the Mosel wine region in Germany, and the Rhône wine region in France, as well as experience the whole of Italy. One can never stop learning and exploring.” Elmarie joined Fleur du Cap in Stellenbosch as the assistant white-wine maker in 2013 and was appointed whitewine maker in 2016, a position she held until assuming the role of white-wine maker at Nederburg in late 2017. Elmarie believes less is more. “I try to interfere as little as possible in the winemaking process. In my opinion, wine needs to express its true character and terroir. And as a winemaker, I see my job as guiding the grapes to their full individual potential. When a wine is made with passion, it really shows! This means learning about each and every vineyard

Elmarie admires women in the wine industry who went before her to create a place for women winemakers in the country. that provides the grapes from which wines are made, and ongoing experimentation to hone our skills and ensure wine lovers are provided with only the best in the bottle.” Her love of wine permeates her whole life. “While you drink a glass of wine, it takes you to a specific place, at a specific time and makes you part of the story. I enjoy the way wine brings different people together, making them friends, and the way that one can pair wine with food. I consider this to be more of an art than a science. “I particularly enjoy working with Chenin blanc, one of South Africa’s earliest and most widely planted grape varieties, since it’s so versatile. International wine critics, writers and tastemakers have in recent years come to recognise Chenin blanc as South Africa’s calling card. I believe our country’s strongest suit is its ability to make this wine

in a variety of styles.” Elmarie admires women in the wine industry who went before her to create a place for women winemakers in the country. “They made it easier for the next generation to take up positions in the South African winemaking industry; to make our mark.” Over weekends one might catch a glimpse of this talented winemaker in the gym, hiking in the mountains, laying on the beach, or catching up with friends over a good pasta and wine. Elmarie is passionate about nature and South Africa. So much so that she has set herself goals to learn to speak isiXhosa fluently, and to complete her MBA in the next 10 years. “There is so much potential in our country, but we need to work together to achieve greatness. Be brave. Be resilient. Be hungry for success.” aha MOMENTS! | 53

Don’t Forget the Digital Prenup: Relationship Break-Ups Put Personal Privacy at Risk With online accounts and connected devices playing an evergrowing role in our daily lives, it has become harder than ever for people in relationships to define the boundaries of personal privacy. But what happens if they break up? By Kaspersky Lab | images © Shutterstock

A

ccording to global research from Kaspersky Lab and Toluna, 21% of people globally have spied on their ex-partner via an online account that they had access to but, with revenge also a key motivator for scorned lovers, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the privacy risks that accompany modern-day partners after a break-up. Privacy is becoming an increasingly fluid concept in a world of digital borders, and relationships are no exception. For example, 70% of couples globally share passwords, PINs or fingerprints to access their personal devices, and 26% store some type of intimate data on their partner’s device: such as intimate messages from/ to the partner (14%), intimate photos of themselves (12%) and

54 | aha MOMENTS!

intimate videos of them and their partner (11%). In addition, people keep sensitive data in accounts and devices they share with their partner – for example, financial information (11%) or workrelated data (11%). This is all well and good when the relationship is healthy and the data is in trusted hands, but some clear issues emerge in the event of a break-up. If things start to collapse, sharing intimate memories on devices or online accounts goes from being a perfectly natural part of a loving relationship, to a potential privacy nightmare. Of those who have experienced a break-up, 12% have shared or wanted to share their ex-partner’s private information publicly as an act of revenge, 12% have damaged or wanted to damage

There are noticeable differences between the sexes, as men are much more likely than women to share their ex-partner’s private information publicly as a form of revenge (17% vs. 7%) and use their ex’s information for their own benefit (17% vs. 8%). their ex’s device and 21% have spied on their former partner via accounts they had access to. There’s also a potential financial impact, with one in ten (10%) people admitting to having spent their ex-partner’s money online. Interestingly, there are some noticeable differences between the sexes, as men are much more likely than women to share their ex-partner’s private information publicly as a form of revenge (17% vs. 7%) and use their ex’s information for their own benefit (17% vs. 8%). In comparison, women are much more willing than men to take the high road by deleting all their ex-partner’s information from their device (55% vs. 49%) and deleting all partner photos or videos following a break-up (56% vs. 48%). Women, however, are also prone to some sneaky tactics, with 33% admitting to spying on their ex-partner via social networks compared to 28% of men. “The digital world offers a great way for couples to connect, but also presents significant privacy risks if partners decide to go their separate ways,” said Andrei Mochola, Head of Consumer Business at Kaspersky Lab. “With a sizeable proportion of individuals seemingly willing to abuse the intimate data they have on their ex-partners, individuals should always make sure they are careful when sharing anything intimate and know exactly where it is being stored. Moreover, there’s always the option of a digital prenuptial agreement to determine the ‘custody’ of data before it becomes a

privacy problem.” But a break-up doesn’t have to put your privacy at risk. People should always be sure to change passwords to accounts that their ex-partner has access to, using the Kaspersky Password Manager to help generate strong passwords and store them securely. Furthermore, Kaspersky Total Security features a File Shredder feature which permanently deletes files that you don’t want anyone else to see, while intimate messages on your Android device can be hidden using the Privacy Protection feature.

hen it comes to wellness, beau idéal meant driving to your local pharmacy to buy your monthly or seasonal vitamins. In extreme cases, you line them up labelled in medicine compartments according to days of the week. Luckily, for some, that is a thing of the past, intravenous drips have become a fast-growing health elixir, promising to keep most ailments at bay. Thanks to a Maryland physician - the late Dr John Myers who used intravenous injections with nutrients to treat many chronic conditions. This latest health craze is all about giving individuals with a busy lifestyle the maintenance needed to perform at optimum levels. People with minor food allergies often attest to having turned to this treatment routine when they accidentally ingest something that may have compromised their immune system for a reboot. A selection of treatments includes an immune booster for guarding against viral infections, a quick detox, and joint inflammation relief. Those in pursuit of that ‘flawless’ skin glow are also in for a treat. We enquire from Jannet Chimanga, nurse in charge at Dr. P Aesthetic Lifestyle Centre about the nitty gritty of this health regimen.

What types of IV treatments are on offer at your clinic?

Can you detail the procedure involved when administering the treatment?

Our Clinic offers the following IV Drips: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Energy Booster Sleepy Time Immune Booster Wound Healer Gut Healer Stress Buster Glowing Skin Pain Reliever Migraine Buster The Mojo (For Men) The Chillout Mane Advantage (Hair) Detoxifier PMS relief and Myers Cocktail

How long is the treatment? Treatment duration varies according to which drip a patient is receiving. Generally, from about 45 minutes to an hour and a half. Who should be taking the treatments in this way and why? Any adult may take IV treatments. We may need to do blood work, especially for individuals who suffer from cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, kidney diseases and diabetic patients. IV Treatment achieves a concentration of nutrients, minerals and supplements into the bloodstream that cannot be delivered by oral ingestion, thereby bypassing the digestive system.

We first explain the procedure to the patient, and after that, the patient has an opportunity to ask questions. Once the formalities are completed, we check blood pressure, temperature and perform a glucose screening. The type of IV therapy is tailored based on the patient’s needs. Patients are under constant supervision during the infusion period, and once the drip is empty, we remove it, and you are well on your way to vitality. Is there a restriction with regards to the frequency? Depending on what IV treatment an individual is receiving we follow a protocol for different procedures. For example, Immune Booster is given once every two weeks for the first month; after that, the clinic can provide a monthly treatment for maintenance. For Glowing Skin IV -a drip every week for the first month, bi-weekly therapy can follow, and support can be on monthly intervals . How much can patients expect to pay for treatments? Our Clinic has affordable pricing ranging from R750 based on supplements selection.

ietnam is an exciting country bristling with new and curious experiences at every turn. Any visitor to this bewildering country will see and experience things you won’t soon forget. The best time to visit Vietnam can be any time of the year, depending on which activities interest you. Vietnam is similar to but also vastly different from its neighbours, so if you’re planning on a Southeast Asian trip, you’ll find the “same same, but different” slogan doesn’t always apply. Some of the best things about Vietnam are its landscapes, people and history. Once you get stuck in, you’ll find out how beautiful and resilient this country is. We’ve put together a comprehensive guide on the best time to visit Vietnam based on its weather, attractions and packages. Weather Vietnam’s weather patterns differ significantly between the north and south. Depending on where you’re planning to spend most of your time, make sure you are prepared for the weather. North The best time to visit Vietnam’s northern region is between March and May, and from September to November when you’ll be spared the full brunt of the summer heat and the cold winter downpours. The period between March and May is Vietnam’s spring season and the countryside around Hanoi is in full bloom. If you’re planning a trip up to Sapa, this is the perfect time as the entire valley is tapestried with emerald rice fields and is any photographer’s dream! Ha Long Bay is especially popular during these months, where you

64 | aha MOMENTS!

can laze on the deck of your junk boat, surrounded by warm water and clear skies. If you’re planning to visit Hanoi between June and August, keep in mind that summer temperatures can reach a searing 33 degrees Celsius. Best to plant yourself near a pool with lots of sunblock for those hot, humid days. Summertime in Vietnam is also peak travel season for the locals during school holidays, so best to book regional flights and accommodation in advance. Summer is also monsoon season, so always carry an umbrella and poncho with you for unexpected showers. The winter months, between November and February, offer cold, wet days where you can spend hours browsing museums, souvenir shops and sipping on traditional cà phê sữa nóng (hot coffee) in cosy corner cafés.

If you plan on biking through the central highlands down to Da Nang, make sure you plan your trip for between January and August. aha MOMENTS! | 65

Central Vietnam’s central region experiences more of a coastal climate. If you plan on biking through the central highlands down to Da Nang, make sure you plan your trip for between January and August. The area experiences heavy rains in October/ November, while May and August are particularly hot months. Hoi An hardly encounters heavy showers and is exceptionally beautiful between February and July when the old town and beaches are humming with activity.

South The best time to visit Vietnam’s southern region is between December and April. Unlike its northern counterpart, the south experiences consistently warm temperatures throughout the year, peaking at around 34 degrees Celsius between February and May. The balmy summer days are ideal for gazing across the skyscrapers from one of the dozens of swanky rooftop bars in Ho Chi Minh City. The dry season runs from January to April; June to November sees the most rain showers occurring in the afternoon. Don’t worry about the rain affecting your travel plans – the lush green countryside is well worth exploring in full bloom. For affordable flights and spectacular sightseeing, the best time to visit Vietnam is between February and April (spring) and September to October (autumn). Temperatures average a comfortable 25 °C up north, while the southern regions of Ho Chi Minh and the Mekong Delta are best explored between December and April, with temperatures peaking at around 33 °C. The spring season (March-April) sees the entire country in full bloom and is ideal for trekking, swimming at the beach and biking through the countryside. With South Africans able to get a Vietnamese visa on arrival or apply online, there is no excuse why Vietnam should not be next on your travel bucket list! hen one thinks of fashion, they think of the clothes, designs and models but never the ones who make fashion accessible. How often are fashion editors, fashion schools, marketers or entrepreneurs given an opportunity to shine? We need to appreciate not only the art but also those who make it possible for us to indulge in it. One such person is Kgomotso Primrose Moloantoa, who serves as the marketing director for Fashion Academy Network (FAN). FAN is a fashion design school situated in Rosebank, Johannesburg and is currently undergoing the process of accreditation with the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education. The institution offers in-house training to an elite group of students with a curriculum that gives them focused and personal attention. There are currently three directors running the institution, namely, Dr Braam Kruger, Julian Smith and Moloantoa herself. The directorship of the company boasts an extensive collection of experience in the fashion industry with Dr Kruger having taught at multiple fashion institutions in

South Africa and Mr Smith is one of the few local designers to have his work showcased at New York Fashion Week. Together they bring about a network of local and international contacts; know-how and zeal to see the next generation of African fashion designers bask in the international stage while creating much-needed jobs. Kgomotso herself is no stranger to fashion; she has worked in all aspects of it, from model to fashion editor and now designer, as well as running her own corporate wear company. The world first got to see her face when she served as the first African ‘Face of L’Oreal’. Before being head hunted by Jane Raphaely of Associated Magazines to join her team to fill the role of fashion editor for “O”- the Oprah Winfrey magazine. Before that, she was the fashion editor for True Love magazine. Business has always been a part of her; never wearing one hat, she has started multiple ventures including promoting musicians such as Chante Moore and running a hair extensions company which operates in different countries within Southern Africa, including Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

With all this under her belt, she still pushes further and works harder to attain what she deems success. She feels being an entrepreneur does not mean one is automatically successful but rather that they have opted to be their boss and hopefully they will empower others through their business venture and that only time will tell if their pursuits are successful. Part of her strategy for success involves keeping her team motivated, asking them, “If you were to die tomorrow, what legacy would you like to leave behind?” She, herself admits that it is a bit morbid but looks to the end goal because she believes if this is her last chance to do something, she wants it to be brilliant. Kgomotso sites understanding cash flow as her most significant challenge with regards to establishing a business. Saying that it can be a crippling mistake to start with too little cash flow or not invoicing and following up because without money, you don’t have a business. Despite this, she knows that as a black female entering into new fields not usually ventured into, is something she has a neck in and how

“...She plays a part in inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs...” she plays a part in inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs, a generation that surely includes her children. Moloantoa recently married her long-time partner, and the pair is raising five children. The most important partnership for her is with her husband as he forms part of her balance. They keep their bond the strongest, the children come second, and work is their third love. Her family supports her without taking anything from her strength or determination. Both she and her husband are entrepreneurs which makes it easier to get away from work when necessary. They are always working and take many short breaks to enjoy one another and spend time with their children. In a world full of technology, where work can follow you home; taking walks with her children, shopping and listening to music together is how they spend their “special time”. This determined entrepreneur is indeed an inspiration to the youth of South Africa, and the one thing that will always resonate with me are her thoughts around getting started when venturing into business,”...a great business plan does not automatically convert into a great business. Whether you are in fashion or any other venture, it is to serve a need, and if no one is willing to buy your time, product or idea, you should not start.” Shy but honest, she lives up to who she says she is, a melting pot of ideas and an inspiration for many.

A Game changer in her industry By aha Hotels & Lodges | Images © Supplied Patience Sekgametsi Matlapeng is South Africa’s first black female ranger. Her career took off when she was offered an opportunity through a community project in 1999 called the Madikwe Initiative. She then joined the Thakadu theatre group as a performer and dancer, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. Patience is currently a ranger at aha Thakadu River Camp, is set in the Madikwe Game Reserve within the riverine canopy along the banks of the Marico River and along the Botswana border about 20km from Gaborone. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where did you grow up? I was born in the village called Molatedi about 150km outside Rustenburg. I am married and mother of three kids (two boys and one girl). I was raised by a single a parent, an active mother who used to work in Johannesburg as a domestic worker. My siblings and me grew under the care of my grandparents. What motivated you to become a ranger? It started with a community project in 1999 called Madikwe Initiative where Mafisa (known as African Lodge Foundation) as consultant where we engage in skills development projects around the villages that borders the Madikwe Game Reserve. Through that, I then joined the Thakadu theatre group as a performer and dancer. We were tasked to provide the narrative about the history and lifestyle of the community-based culture and tradition in the game reserve. After visiting the park and performing for tourists, I started gaining an interest in the game drive and general field work. Later in 2001, the group collapsed, and I was then employed at Etali Safari Lodge as a tracker. Tell us about your studies. I completed a Nature Guiding course with the assistance of rangers that I worked with at that time; Moremi Keabetswe, Adriana Swart and Owen Rennie. We were later joined by Graigh Carnaby who used to set exams for us. I wrote my exams in June 2004; it took me two years to study as qualify as a ranger.

What are some of the challenges that you face as a woman in this male-dominated industry? As tracker things were perfect, the men were supportive and helpful there was no competition amongst us. However, things started getting a bit challenging in 2006 when I began to guide full time, working with male rangers. It took them a while to adjust to a woman joining the team, and we had to build a level of trust. All I could do was do my work to the best of my ability and show them that I was as capable as they are. I earned my respect this way; however, it still saddens me that women have to go beyond and above to prove themselves and prove that we are competent. Men need to learn to respect women in every type of work environment. What are some of the lessons you have learned? Never argue with your colleagues, learn to trust each other. We are working in an environment that is dangerous and need to be cautious at all times, our guests’ safety and the safety of the animals is crucial. Provide your guest with an excellent safari experience. What would your words of advice be to a young woman who is interested in joining the industry? The bush is very diverse with any species of animals and flora. I wish more women would gain interest and passion for nature. There should be more awareness about biodiversity and encouragement on this to be an espionage campaign of our communities. “Women can Rule.”

The Agency’s base is Johannesburg, the only city to survive a Supernova that destroyed the world, thanks to a series of mining tunnels running like honeycomb beneath its surface. In the new post-Supernova Johannesburg, black skins are protected while white skins are considered a frightening abomination. This is a city in which time-travelling agents have access to the past and the future, a world in which Enver must search for an elusive enemy plotting against the Agency. But Enver and Shanumi’s mission starts off on shaky footing, and when Shanumi disappears Enver must prove to the Agency that he is not a double agent. Enver Eleven didn’t set out to be anyone’s prophet, but that’s exactly what he’s fated to become. Imraan Coovadia’s A Spy in Time is a strange story for even stranger times, making us question: if we could go back and change the past, would the future turn out the way we want it to be?
