W

e are halfway through 2019, and winter is upon us, but the weather doesn’t necessarily mean you have to stay cooped up indoors. There’s more to winter than sitting on the couch and trying to keep warm. aha Hotels & Lodges can make your winter so much more interesting, or even adventurous. There are plenty of exciting destinations throughout South Africa that you can ‘get away’ to if you want to escape that winter cabin fever. You could even take a short flight or scenic drive to one of our close neighbours – like Zambia, or Botswana – for a dose of sunlight and some warm African hospitality. aha Hotels & Lodges has a property to suit any taste, whether you’re looking to get out of the cold or embrace it – perhaps in a cosy chalet with a fireplace, surrounded by picturesque mountains. Much like mountains, life also has its ups and downs. This month’s cover star, entrepreneur, actor, TV presenter, fashion designer, MC, model, creative consultant, voice over artist, philanthropist and more, Masego ‘Maps’ Maponyane, has undoubtedly had both. He’s made a great success of himself but has experienced some low points too. Read our exclusive on this self-made South African media icon on pages 16-19. If you’re looking for a touch of adventure off the beaten track this winter, look no further than the aha Chobe Marina Lodge. Situated at the crossroads where Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia meet, the lodge brings the best of these four regions together in a spectacular fashion. From safaris to sightseeing cruises, tiger fishing and even bungee jumping for the brave, Chobe Marina Lodge is purest Africa at its best. Nearby Chobe National Park houses the world’s largest African elephant population and the rare African wild dog species. Read more about this unforgettable destination on pages 58-61. aha Casa do Sol Hotel & Resort in Hazyview is another destination you won’t want to miss. It’s the perfect getaway with a Mediterranean touch, surrounded by 500 hectares of natural beauty. It’s loved by hikers, and the dining and accommodation options are world-class. Read more about it on pages 64-66. At aha, we believe that Africa’s singular beauty and living spirit of adventure is something to be celebrated. You can choose your own adventure at any one of our properties in South Africa, Zambia or Botswana. The aha Thakadu River Camp (featured on pages 38-40), for example, takes ‘glamping’ to a whole new level. And aha The David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River (pages 24-26), will leave you with an unforgettable snapshot of everything that makes Africa so beautiful, all in one place. It’s an image that will stay with you long after you’ve left. In keeping with adventurous spirits, SA’s Got Talent winner DJ Arch Jr. became the world’s youngest club DJ at just five-years-old. Find out more about this diminutive but rapidly growing music star on pages 28-30. We also talk to Rugby Legend Stefan Terblanche on pages 68-69 about the Rugby World Cup 2019 taking place in Japan in just a few months’ time. Plan your next getaway at the world-class aha destination of your choice. Visit our website, www.aha.co.za to brighten up those winter months and chase away those icy blues with some home-grown luxury and hospitality. Enjoy the adventures to come!

Readers’ letters

Norah Keye, who wrote this issue’s winning letter, takes home Eco-Earth Monaco luggage set valued at R2500

Welcome and thank so much for joining our community. In our last issue, we asked our readers to share some of their treasured memories and experiences about their recent travels. Well done to all those who shared their beautiful images with us, and congratulations to the winner! Hi There

! r e n n i w

First time I have read your magazine at the Slow Lounge at OR Tambo. Very interesting and informative. I travel the world and always return to our beautiful country, of which I see you have some awesome Hotels and Lodges. My personal favourite areas in South Africa are Natal and Pilanesberg. Ivory Tree Lodge looks fabulous will put that on my list as a must do. Gateway in Umhlanga is another firm favourite of mine. Also, a mind, body and spirit person yoga is part of my life for at least 15 years, so I loved the article on Connect Up.

I happened to pick up your magazine while I am relaxing in the FNB slow lounge travelling back to Cape Town from Sandton on business. While I have been away I have decided I would love to bring my son to Joburg on a safari experience, he is 8. What I loved about your magazine are all the beautiful [accommodations] you recommend. All are exciting and beautiful, and my only problem is deciding which one to book. Can’t wait to bring my son on a lovely adventure. Thank you for recommendations!

Cook it like Chef Mynhardt is also awesome, I will try his ideas! Well done on producing such an awesome magazine, and in print, too: it’s nice to hold in our digital world.

The Three Wards and My Three Picks: After tasting the Pinots from the beautiful 2017 vintage, we can start seeing homogeneity in the three areas. The clay-rich ‘Valley’ ward, close to Hermanus, offers broader shoulders and spicy dark fruit. Storm Vrede 2017 reaches for the stars.

A Guide on Hemel-en-Aarde’s Pinot Noir by Roland Peens – Director at Wine Cellar The wines of Burgundy are the hottest wines in the world right now. Prices of the most soughtafter ‘Crus’ grew 40% last year, on what were already astonishing market prices. You will need half a million rand to buy the most expensive wine in the market. Demand for Burgundy is linked partly to the small volumes of their top wines and slightly to the high quality that only Burgundy can achieve with Pinot Noir. There seems to be no end to this bull-run as more of the world’s wealthy enter the luxury market. Earlier in the year at the Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir Celebration, we discussed the valley’s stature compared to the world of Pinot Noir. There are pockets around the globe that can produce special Pinot and compete with Burgundy. In comparing quality, Hemel-en-Aarde scores very well in the most respected world wine publication, the Wine Advocate. Burgundy wines averaged 93 points for the 2016 vintage, and Hemel-en-Aarde came in just under 91 points, behind Central Otago and the Ahr in Germany. It seems that our little valley outside Hermanus can produce world-class Pinot Noir. The amount of Pinot Noir produced in the Hemel-en-Aarde is tiny, however, and more specialisation is required to reach a wider audience. Anthony Hamilton Russell has been driving the image of the valley internationally for more than two decades. Along with Bouchard Finlayson, their collaboration with new producers is an excellent launchpad for success. Anthony has also assisted in dividing the region into three wards, as the next step in the journey.

Moving to the ‘Upper’ ward, the granite soils offer a finer acidity and intense perfume. Storm and Newton Johnson lead the way, but Bosman vineyards is a relative newcomer, and winemaker Corlea Fourie is making great Pinot Noir. In fact, the Bosman Upper Hemelen-Aarde Pinot 2017 is simply the best value at R160 and shows the true quality of the region. The ‘Ridge’ at the end of the appellation is higher in altitude and offers a bluefruited note to the wines. The newest of the wards shows lots of promise, the Creation Art of Pinot 2017 is, however, dazzling! It offers tremendous depth, power and age-ability with luxurious tannins and floral notes. And it’s worth the thousand Rand price tag. To order fine wines at Wine Cellar, please visit http://www.winecellar.co.za/ §

Why Should I Hesitate? Sculpture will also premiere new works commissioned for the occasion of this special exhibition. The exhibitions will be accompanied by a series of talks and performances with the artist, and leading voices in the cultural sector. Masego ‘Maps’ Maponyane is living his best life — but he’s also not afraid of sharing the downside, too. Text Trevor Crighton | Images © Supplied

M

aps Maponyane’s last five Instagram posts, at the time of writing, saw him having a casual lunch in Florence, practising his ‘Blue Steel’ on the street in Paris, urging South Africans to vote in the May general election, wishing everyone a Happy Easter and sipping Grey Goose at the source, the 17th-century manor home in Cognac. While it’s easy to write this kind of imagery off to ‘living the Instagram life’, the reality is that this IS Maps’ life – and he’s very much aware of how lucky he is. Authenticity has always been key to ‘Brand Maps’, and it’s one of the reasons he is so successful. Shots of him striding across a road in Paris or jetting off to his double-digit international destination of the year in a Business Class seat aren’t there for the sake of bragging rights – it’s just a glimpse into the busy life he leads. “I don’t like presenting

unfair expectations and giving people unrealistic aspirations – especially young people – on social media,” he says. “It’s not real – it’s something I’ve always tried to be conscious of, and I’ve tried to show the ups and the downs”. True to form, alongside the glamorous fashion portraits sit a few heartfelt posts dedicated to the tech company he had to close down in 2018. The end of the caption reads: “Eventually, with every option exhausted, just like everyone involved trying to get it back on its feet and running comfortably, it had to be put on life support. By then the frustration is too much, you’ve done everything you can, and you just have to close your eyes and let go”. He says it’s essential to document the ebb and flow of both business and life, because “the reel can’t only reflect the highlights”. Part of the learning experience with the company was that nothing is ever guaranteed and you always have to be aware of the risks. “You need to be able to take the hit, if necessary – you have to be prepared to absorb the knocks. I definitely don’t regret backing, building and putting my own money into it because I believed in it and I can’t put a price on what I learned. I certainly don’t regret it, but wish it hadn’t been that way,” he says. He’s always been the face of several brands – notably Samsung, >> aha MOMENTS! | 17

My role is to show people that they can make a huge difference in the life of an entire community by simply giving of their time and skills, on even the smallest scale. If we’re not looking after the future and what it can hold for us as Africans, there won’t be one – the continent will never realise its full potential and will continue to be dependent on foreign aid.” Google and Mercedes-Benz – but he’s also on a mission to create brands of his own. He collaborated with GM & Ahrens to create an MCC of his own, which has quietly been doing the rounds with collectors and wine & bubbly aficionados for the last year or so, and he’s now toying with taking it commercial. “It’s called Spectacle because MCC’s are associated with celebrations and we think that it’s something that can make any occasion a spectacle,” he says. “It’s a high-quality, highend product that we think stands up to France’s quality champagnes and we hope that it’ll find appreciation amongst fine diners, wine connoisseurs and people willing to spend the money on enjoying a product made to very high standards”. If all goes to plan – and he 18 | aha MOMENTS!

decides to take it ‘commercial’ – Spectacle will be available from around September 2019. No stranger to time in front of the camera, he’s assuming the role of Producer alongside Terry Pheto on a new local film directed by Akin Omotoso, being shot in Johannesburg as you read this. “Convincing prospective investors to put money up for a local film has been quite a challenge,” says Maps. “It’s tricky to convince someone to part with their money when there’s no guarantee of success – but the team we’ve assembled is dedicated to doing everything that needs to be done to make it a success”. Philanthropy is taking an ever-more prominent role in his day-to-

day life, as borne out by his involvement with the Laureus Foundation and his appointment as a Volunteer Advocate for UNICEF South Africa. Of the former, he says he’s incredibly supportive of the work they do in utilising sports to ensure that children across the world are given fair life opportunities, lessons and skills. “Children who come from troubled backgrounds can so easily head down rabbit holes of problematic behaviour or lives of crime, and Laureus has implemented some amazing programmes to give them opportunities to stay off the streets and show them their real potential,” he says. “Sport gives them added hope that they can make a difference in their own lives – and in the lives of others, too”. His work with UNICEF is part of his mission to champion Early Childhood Development (EDC), something particularly close to his

heart. “UNICEF has these wonderful support programmes for children from communities which are struggling with the results of famine, disasters, a lack of educational opportunities and a host of other issues. They rally people to support by volunteering and giving their time – money isn’t always the most important contribution – and anyone can help,” he says. “My role is to show people that they can make a huge difference in the life of an entire community by simply giving of their time and skills, on even the smallest scale. If we’re not looking after the future and what it can hold for us as Africans, there won’t be one – the continent will never realise its full potential and will continue to be dependent on foreign aid”. Travel – for work and pleasure – remains a big part of his life, with trips to the U.S., France, Italy, England, Zimbabwe, Zambia,

Monaco, Dubai, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and New Zealand already ticked off, or on the cards for 2019 alone. “Of the Nordic countries, I’ve only ever been to Finland, and I’m excited to explore the others because they inspire a lot of my ideas about design and ways of thinking. I really appreciate those societies and how they manage to create such incredible environments for people to live in,” he says. He’ll be there as a guest of Mercedes-Benz, who are launching a host of new electric and hybrid ‘EQ’ cars. “What’s fascinating is that Norway has just become the first country with as many electric cars on the road as there are, combustion-engined cars. That’s staggering”. What’s next? You never can tell, with Maps – but it’s sure to be authentic, whether it’s a big win or a hard knock. aha MOMENTS! | 19

urban based artist Julia Forman’s work captures the essence of the subject. Her brush is guided by emotions and passion, which brings out the bright and colourful works. Julia loves playing with new ideas, which pop up as she works, and the spectrum of colour, which leads to her changing her paintings. As few artists would, Julia’s work captures images we might have seen at some time, those special moments in time. Her figures are more about attitude and character, rather than perfect renditions. “When I complete a figure painting, the character and I have become one. Having spent many hours together, we know each other well”.

For the past nine years, she has exhibited around the country in various shows, such as the Decorex Cape Town and Johannesburg, Art in the Park and the Hilton Arts Festival (Hilton College). Her work is also represented in galleries around Durban, Cape Town and the Drakensberg. Julia’s art is also found in private and corporate collections, both locally and internationally. Julia is inspired by colour contrasts, lights and shade. She had always had a passion for art but never pursued it as a professional career. Instead, she qualified as a professional teacher. While raising her children, she actively got involved in fine arts, painting on fabric, pottery and clothing. She drew further inspiration from her >> aha MOMENTS! | 21

Julia emphasised that she was hooked from day one and has never stopped since. Julia was honoured with an opportunity, which is not presented to many artists, to paint on the fabric used by local designer Gideon for fashion shows. For her, this was an exciting challenge in a different medium. find their own voice in the arts. The fine art profession wasn’t always accepted as a profession, but this was not the case with Julia’s family. She is grateful to her understanding and incredibly supportive family who allowed her to pursue art. Added to this, she is happy to have fellow artists, who are her special friends, encourage, listen, offer advice, and often exhibit alongside her. “I am honoured to share these experiences with them,” she says. So far, in her art career, Julia has

encountered a few obstacles. She brought to our attention that this happens to most artists; they reach a stage in their work where they feel stuck. “I have found the only solution is to push on through this, try something different, and challenge myself. Often this point comes before a new level is attained in my work. This is not for the fainthearted. Contrary to popular belief, art is a rollercoaster.”

He’s spun the decks on America’s Got Talent, received a standing

ovation from none other than hard-to-please, Simon Cowell, and played everywhere from Johannesburg to China. But the latest It-DJ on the SA club scene is unexpected, to say the least. ratilwe AJ Hlongwane — a.k.a. DJ Arch Jnr. — burst on to the scene four years ago in 2015, winning South Africa’s Got Talent at the absurdly young age of three-years-old. Since then, DJ Arch Jnr. has succeeded in winning the Guinness World Record for being the youngest ever DJ to play a full 60 minute set, which he did at Platinum Lounge Bar in Cosmo City, Johannesburg, locking down the title at the oh-so-tender age of five years (and 38 days!), and securing his spot as a beloved, household name in South Africa in the process. Earlier this year, the infamous Simon Cowell, told him that “You and

I need to be talking after this show because I’ve got plans for you” and it’s no wonder: playing to crowds of hundreds of people and more has become de rigueur for the young talent, who, it might be said, has maintained as normal a life as possible, thanks to the grounding force of his doting parents. In an interview with Cape Talk presenter, Kieno Kammies, Glen Hlongwane said “…His schoolwork still comes first and he only gets on the decks at home over weekends.” Star struck to say the least, we were fortunate enough to chat to the musical wunderkind about dreaming big, overcoming his fears and what impressive feat he has set his sights on next. >> aha MOMENTS! | 29

Follow your dreams because anything is possible.

Hi DJ Arch Junior, thank you so much for making time for us in your very busy schedule! Could you please tell us about your most exciting gig to date? My most exciting gig to date was when I went to go perform at AGT (America’s Got Talent) in January this year. I was so excited! You’ve set Guiness world records and DJ’d for thousands of fans: what has been the most difficult or challenging moment for you in your short but jam-packed career? The hardest challenge for me so far has been when I had to break the Guinness World Record [for the youngest DJ in the world to play a 60-minute set] because I had to play for an hour and I had never done that before. 30 | aha MOMENTS!

That’s a long time! And what do you like to get up to when you are not DJ’ing? When I’m not DJ’ing, I like to play Fifa on my PlayStation, or play with my little sister, who is called Jozie. Do you have any words of advice for other children (and grown ups!) who are too afraid to pursue their dreams? I would say that you must follow your dreams, because anything is possible. How do you balance being a famous celebrity and a prodigious DJ with also being just a regular kid? My dad and Mom always make sure that I put school first and then only after that I am allowed to DJ.

Is there somewhere that you dream of DJ’ing one day? I would like to DJ in America. Who is your favourite DJ? My favourite DJ is Black Coffee No surprises there! Do you have a message for your fans here at Moments magazine? Thank you for your support! There are exciting things coming soon. And so, young DJ Arch Junior, where are you off to from here? Just keep looking out for my posts, because more exciting things are coming in the future.

Brow Wow! Unaiza Suliman updates us on the latest brow trends I have no doubt that you’ve seen brows of all shapes and sizes, since eyebrow trends change from decade to decade. Eyebrows are a prominent feature on one’s face and they have the single biggest effect on your facial structure, youthfulness and overall vibe. The Gram brow has trended for a long time, but this winter, the down-to-earth brow has hit it big. A fluffy, less-perfected brow is the new brow trend and it reigns supreme right now. It also is quicker to style! The key to a fuller brow: use less product and have your own hairs look fuller and darker. Achieve the fluffy texture brow: invest in a brow serum, this will get your brows to grow fuller and thicker. Use a clear brow gel to set the brows upwards to create the fluffy look; layer on a brow powder with a blending brow brush and shadow them in naturally. Having your brows tinted is also a way to go. Just remember: you’ll get a better result if you go two shades darker than your natural hair. Lastly, brush your brows to keep them perfectly groomed.

Marc Schroeder Call to the Wild !

Entrepreneur and adventurer, Marc Schroeder, seemingly had it all: a successful career in finance, a relationship, a supportive family and a promising future ahead of him. But as he himself has admitted, not everything was as it seemed. Text: Megan Ross | Images © Supplied, Sourced

S

elf-confessed dog-lover, outdoors guy and - in a past life - financial analyst, Marc Schroeder grew up in a happy, middle class family, attended Rhodes University, and secured a promising corporate job for himself in East London. But during this period of external success, and the accompanying heady lifestyle that financial prosperity made possible, he developed a serious addiction to drugs. Now, a couple years later, and in a complete 360 degree turn, Marc is married, and running the Kashmir Trekking Company in Nepal! We got to chat to him about living in the East, natural highs, and what brought about this dramatic change in his life.

Marc, you’ve sought highs in so many different places, and now you’re building a life around climbing mountains. Why trekking? I have a deep passion for mountain trekking which was first inspired by a trek I did on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal in 2011. My journey of self-discovery officially began in Nepal. When I returned to the Himalayas in 2016, after resigning from my job, I then visited the Kashmir. After a bizarre series of occurrences and coincidences, I ended up in the serene Kashmir village called 34 | aha MOMENTS!

‘Naranag’. I met a man named Aslam, who is now my partner in a venture we set up called the Kashmir Trekking Company. I arrived in Kashmir after nearly losing my battle with addiction, I was really washed out with very little hope for the future. Aslam and his brothers took me on a trek to the Kashmir Great Lakes that changed my life, a trip that revived me and gave me a reason to live. And today we take people from all over the world on some of the most thrilling and beautiful hiking expeditions on the planet. In light of all of the things you have accomplished, what has been the singlemost important thing you have done in the last decade? There are two: quitting my job in the rat race and following my heart to India and releasing my book ‘Sleeping with Dogs’. Both of these life events have yielded incredible spiritual returns. I wouldn’t have finished the book if I hadn’t quit my job, so I guess the most incredible thing I have done is diving into the unknown and walking away from a 13-year career in finance, a job that was paying me R150k a month. I now have the things that I wanted to badly: love. Health. Purpose. These things have come to me through having faith.

How do you feel about being healthy, mentally and physically and emotionally, after a painful period of physical and emotional distress? When I trek in the Himalayas or swim in the sea, I am so thankful for this sense of vitality, of health and love within me. I guess this sense means more or is more pronounced in recovering addicts because we truly know what the absence of it feels like. I believe addiction is a complex issue; an expression of one’s misery or inability to connect with the world. This belief was validated in 2011, when I went to Nepal for the first time and my addiction was completely muted while I trekked outside and immersed myself in nature. When I returned to my situation it didn’t take long for the addiction to be activated. The popular view is that drugs and alcohol are to blame for addictions, but I think it’s more complicated than that. Has your definition of success changed? Yes my understanding of what success has changed drastically from when I was a student or during my first few years trying to cut it in the financial world. I used to believe that if you were rich, you were successful. Only when I realised how incredibly miserable I was when I was earning more

than ever before did I realise how wrong I was. I now believe success is measured in meaning, or, what we mean to the world we live in, what we do to better the world around us. I believe we are all spiritually connected, and by enriching those around us, we are enriching ourselves. Success is about what you give rather than what you can take. Have you ever noticed how good you feel after performing a random act of kindness? I’m a living example that proves money can’t buy happiness, my advice to school leavers is to try do what they love, give that a go. Money is important but it should never be the anchor of what true success means. Did writing a memoir ever make you feel exposed? The book was written in a very positive space with the intention of inspiring others and maybe even saving lives. When I returned back to the ‘world’ I lived in to relay my ideas and stories people got scared. In the time leading up to the book launch I started getting scared and began to question the whole process. I nearly ended up abandoning the project, which would have been the worst mistake and may have led me back to active addiction. The fear heightened up until the launch of the book, and after the launch the most incredible thing happened: my fear of being judged disappeared and I was able to see it for the lie it really is. Was the actual writing to be a cathartic process for you? It was very difficult at times; it took me straight back to those dark moments, but also to those places where I learned the most about myself. It was one of the most

“Be ruthless about what you want from life. We only have one. I am so grateful that I followed my heart. Our minds tell us that things won’t work out if we try make changes, but the mind cannot tell the future, it can only fear it.” empowering things I have ever gone through and I would do it again. No regrets. What has people’s response to your book been like? Generally, I have had a range of great feedback. “Your bravery in following the path less travelled, but the path that you knew would save you, is pure inspiration,” is what one reader told me, but of course there has been some negative feedback in that there is still a stigma attached to addiction. I challenge this every day as I believe nobody chooses addiction. So, I’ve had people want me to feel ashamed or apologise, which I have done to those I hurt while being addicted, but I am done with apologising for the immeasurable suffering I endured to keep face in society. A of couple years ago, it seemed, to the outsider at least, that you were really thriving in life. What would you say to someone who feels empty or dissatisfied, despite ‘ticking all the boxes’? Be ruthless about what you want from life. We only have one. I am so grateful that I followed my heart. Our minds tell us that things won’t work out if we try make changes, but the mind cannot tell the future, it can only fear it.

The soul knows the future, which is why it is important to take note of our instincts. If you are really unhappy, I encourage anyone to go take a three week trek in Nepal, be still in the great mountains and the soul will speak. You’ve lived so many different lives for someone so young. What do you see for yourself in the future? I’m a married man now with two beautiful children to think about. So for now, I am going to try and be a family guy. My business operates out of the Kashmir Himalayas, so I still get to go there every year which is just what I need. So my future is more trekking, being a dad, a husband and hopefully I’ll get the sequel to ‘Sleeping with Dogs’ out soon. Possible title, ‘Smoking with Gypsies’ – what do you think?

Voluntary support for logistical aspects of the flight is being provided by CFS, ExecuJet, Worldfuel and Mike Blyth, founder of The Airplane Factory – the enterprise that designed and built the original Sling plane series. The prototype of the Sling 4 was chosen because this type has already been flown twice around the world. Using specially modified, self-made drones, the Challenge will be documented on video as some of the teenagers fly alongside adult supervisors who will use a second Sling-4 aircraft for support to monitor proceedings. Six teenage pilots will take turns to fly the selfassembled plane as the Challenge moves from country to country. For logistics and different needs for the Challenge, various partnerships and sponsorship elements are being sought. The crew requires fuel, accommodation, crew support, commercial flight tickets, branding and documentation.

here’s something royal about the way a horse struts around bush trails in the winter months, perhaps the image is more linked to the mediaeval times, and more recently the rise in fantasy films painting a picture of how life worked in the mid-centuries. Back in the day, horse riding was more like a mode of transport than an experience. You can now add a horse-riding safari on your bucket list. What is even more interesting about this adventure is that it is 42 | aha MOMENTS!

not all about galloping away but savouring the moment, this comes with a wealth of benefits to it too, as riding brings calm to a busy mind. Standard riding rules say you need to dig your heels down and keep your shoulders back and maintain some kind of a poise while mimicking the horse’s rhythmic steps for a smooth ride. This does help in strengthening your core for a good posture. There are various ways to experience horse riding safaris, and it includes an option of

enjoying a ride alone and suffer nothing else but the peaceful sounds of birds or as a group experience. Durban in KwaZulu-Natal has a subtropical climate which makes it one of the warmer regions in winter. Its lush scenery makes it ideal for exploring the trails, and Horseback Beach Adventures offers unique equestrian tours for a novice or experienced riders which includes a combination of bush and beach rides.

Here are some of the tours you can experience: Horse Experience This is a great starter experience, and very well suited for team building. Arrive at the farm for a “Meet and Greet of the horses, if you are keen on brushing and learning to saddle up you can join us in getting them ready to ride. Then go for a +- 1-hour Bush only trail. Upon return, light refreshments are served. Duration of Experience: 1.45minuntes

All this and much more is possible with a horse-drawn carriage. Every Carriage Ride package includes the horse, wagon and a trained driver. Duration: up to 1hour

op-tier communications agency Red Carpet Creative celebrates 10 years of innovation this year. Spearheaded by founder and Managing Director Jade Allen, RCC’s winning business ethic has set the benchmark with inspired campaigns for high-end hospitality, wine and luxury-lifestyle brands. She tells us more. Jade’s entrepreneurial spirit has been vital for moulding such a successful business. What has been primary? “Staying focused on the vision and mission. Defining your who and being clear about your offering. Keep innovating and benchmarking tried and tested practices to stay ahead of the game,” she says. In such a competitive environment strategy is hugely important for attaining excellent outcomes: “Working on a long lead timeline is key. Ensure KPIs are set out from the get-go. breathe life into them, giving them a voice that people want to listen to,” she explains. Jade’s infectious enthusiasm translates to results-driven action – does she embrace all her clients with the same vigour? “We only work an accounts we feel strongly passionate about to ensure we’re able to give them our full focus and deliver beyond expectation. We are results driven and make sure we meet deadlines and targets with every campaign we set out to administer.” Thinking out of the box is a bit of an art form – how does she approach creating hard-hitting campaigns that grab people’s attention? “Being a group of creatives, this is something that comes easily to us. We have big visions and with our tried and tested practices we’re able to attain the results we desire,” she adds. The agency embraces a range of lifestyle modalities, and this year saw Red Carpet Concepts rebrand to Red Carpet Creative earlier in 2018. “Red Carpet Creative was birthed from months of planning and consideration – the name, logo, website is a better reflection of who we are and what we do. We’re a full-service creative agency offering communications and events specifically geared towards high-end hospitality, wine and luxury lifestyle brands. The new look and feel are more contemporary and upbeat yet still captures a timeless sophistication we find in the brands we partner our services with.” One standout feature of RCC is the passion of the team. This buoyant approach impacts the way the business presents - as a goaldriven communications company confident of an assured outcome. This seems like a natural fit with dynamism of Jade Allen. “Thank you! I have a pretty confident outlook as to who I am, what I want and where I’m heading, so I never really give myself too much room to question that I guess. I also choose to learn and grow from every incongruent situation I’m dealt with and draw on a more positive outcome.” As an entrepreneur Jade is an excellent example of how women can shape their vision into a profitable business. What are the qualities needed not only to represent international A-list media, celebrities and influencers, but also to be one yourself? “I just really enjoy creating beautiful moments of suspended reality for people to immerse themselves within. My job, as I’ve defined it, is an ideas generator – we build creative campaigns, giving each one a voice to tell its newsworthy story.” RCC is known for its stringent SOPs and clear KPIs, and this has translated to positive outcomes. “It’s imperative to plan far in advance on a long lead time marketing calendar. In order for client and agency teams to be on the same page KPIs must be set out from the get-go. This will ensure the agency meets client expectations and targets throughout the duration of the partnership.

Understanding your content is critical in marketing, and with her being so immersed in the high-end hospitality milieu this must be of huge benefit to understanding clients’ needs? “I align our portfolio with aspects of life I feel passionate about, which certainly gives me a stronger drive, more in-depth interest and added excitement about the brands we work on.” And are there any valuable lessons learnt over this 10 year process? “When hiring – do your homework! t was early 2018 when award-winning singer and performer, Beyoncé Knowles announced her return to the stringent vegan diet in a quest to get her body back postpartum. In an Instagram post, the star rallied millions of her fans to journey with her in this regime by following the diet through the recipes she shared in preparation for what became a record-breaking Coachella performance which became popularly known as Beychella. She and husband Jay-Z are no strangers to the trend, according to ABC News – the couple’s trainer, Marco Borges created a 22-day plant-based diet for them back in 2015. This year, many of the food and health trends show the influence of a more health-conscious consumer. So, here are some of the trends that have proved to be getting popular by the day.

Plant-based eating With people choosing more a plant-based diet and eating less meat, it is no wonder that plant-based food is still a significant trend for 2019. This can be seen in the increased prevalence of vegetarianism, veganism or flexitarians, but also more plant-based meals on offer at restaurants and supermarkets. Within this trend, the search for good quality proteins such as soy, tofu, legumes, walnuts, tempeh, seeds and whole grains are becoming more popular as they easily replace meat or fish without affecting the balance of our meal. Eating more plant-based foods is not only beneficial for you but also the environment.

Healthier Alternatives As people become more health conscious, they search for healthier alternatives and replacements for particular foods. People are searching for healthier options for bread, meat and dairy. This is seen in the increased use of milk alternatives, vegan cheeses, black beans, lentils, rice, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, pea and lupin (legume) as well as insects as protein sources. There is also talk of beans, peas and lentils being used in cakes, muffins, breads and plant-based frozen desserts.

Snacking Snackification is another trend that is carrying over from 2018. What is changing, however, is the way people think about snacking and what is considered a snack. Researchers found that “63% of millennials are replacing meals with snacks and snacking

is moving away from being an optional extra to a definitive occasion”. Trends seen in retailers show the rise in snacking options made with better ingredients all neatly packed in a single-serving.

Probiotics into foods This trend not only embraces including foods that naturally contain probiotics such as Kefir, Sauerkraut, Tempeh, Kimchi, Miso, Kombucha and Pickles but also shelf stable probiotics added to foods. You are going to start seeing functional probiotic ingredients added to your staples through products like granola, yoghurt, cereals, nut butter, soups and bars.

“The star rallied millions of her fans to journey with her in this regime by following the diet through the recipes she shared in preparation for what became a record-breaking Coachella performance which became popularly known as Beychella.” Elevated convenience This trend focuses on increased demand for healthy, foodie inspired convenience food and drinks options, that don’t skimp on quality. This includes premium convenience foods, meal kits, food delivery services and in other parts of the world, fully-automated food stores that use mobile apps and cameras to make grocery shopping as seamless as ordering food for delivery. This is in response to the fact that more people are becoming health conscious and showing a passion for food, but might lack the skills, equipment and/or time.

Healthy ageing Preparing oneself for a longer, healthier lifespan is particularly relevant as consumers view health and wellness as a holistic, proactive, and ongoing pursuit. We will see more food and drink products that are being developed for people of all ages, especially the aged, through fortification or the addition of a functional ingredient to make a functional food. This is when food is given an additional function by adding new elements or more of existing ingredients over and above what you would find in regular food. The aim is to help consumers to efficiently consume vitamins, minerals, and other

elements that are potentially beneficial for one’s health namely bone, joint, immune system and brain health.

Rethink plastic With the large amounts of plastic ending up in the environment and microparticles starting to infiltrate our food, it is no wonder that it’s a 2019 trend and rightly so. People are trying to be more health conscious as well as considering the environment more. The food industry, as well as its consumers, are striving to use less plastic, recycle more and there is a big drive to switch to environmentally-friendly packaging. This is evident in the banning of straws, earbuds, the increased use of recyclable takeaway and coffee containers, encouraging customers to bring reusable containers or coffee cups and even plastic-free grocery stores. Rethinking plastic along with the movement to reduce food waste as well as the importance of soil health and regenerative agriculture are named in Mintel’s global food and drink trends for 2019.

Virtual fitness training and online workout subscriptions Some people don’t like to go to the gym or exercise in a group but struggle to find the motivation to exercise on their own. This trend allows people to get training and instruction from the comfort of their own homes. It usually involves subscribing to an app where you pay a monthly fee and requires the use of a TV or cell phone.

Eating breakfast We’ve heard it a thousand times, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Although our lives are busy, finding time for a healthy, balanced breakfast daily can provide a host of benefits. Eating breakfast provides a kick-start on reaching your daily nutritional needs, assists with weight management, stabilises mood and improves brain power and productivity. There is no reason that breakfast should ever not be trendy! Other trends that are on the radar for next year include the importance of gut health, the use of hemp, pacific rim flavours (Asia, Oceania and the western coasts of North and South America), colourful beverages using natural, botanical and plant-based ingredients, mindfulness and intuitive eating. aha MOMENTS! | 55

lighting a lift in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, 202 metres above street level, offers a staggering perspective of the city’s massive scale. Calling Tokyo ‘sprawling’ does it a disservice. On one side, the highrise building stretches to Mount Fuji – a high-speed train journey of over 45 minutes outside the city – and beyond. Tokyo is the world’s most populous metropolitan area, with a population of over 38 million – nearly 70% of South Africa’s entire population, in a single city. The country is a strange combination of ancient & modern, closed & friendly and as frustrating as it can be, enchanting. While Toyko is a hub for fashion, technology and culture, it’s also home to 1300-year-old temples which rest in the shadow of the expensive skyscrapers which punctuate its skyline. 500km from Tokyo is Kyoto, accessible via ruthlessly efficient high-speed Shinkansen train in under three hours, and the country’s heart – the name ‘Kyoto’ means ‘Capital City’. For thousands of years, Kyoto was the country’s seat of government, arts and learning. Though very much a modern-day first-world city, Kyoto retains many links with its past, including several mesmerisinglybeautiful temples, the impressive but mournful Fushimi Inari shrine, comprising over 10 000 red and black torii gates dedicated to lost loved ones, and the worldfamous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where green bamboo stalks stretch far into the sky, forming a calming canopy. Nearby is Osaka – another quick train journey away – and a prime example of Japan’s ability to place the modern alongside the ancient. The contrast of the Osaka Castle – built in 1583 – set against the backdrop of contemporary office towers is an astonishing one. The city is built over many waterways which run in and out of it from the Bay of Osaka, with the several thousand bridges which once allowed its residents to traverse them earning the city the nickname ‘Venice of the East’. Dotonbori is the bustling heart of the city, having been the entertainment capital since the 1600s. After being almost destroyed by bombing during WWII, the >> aha MOMENTS! | 71

area was reborn as a popular dining and nightlife location, crammed with neon signage that rewards a night-time visit to see the ever-shifting patterns reflected on the surface of the canal. It’s in Dotonbori that you’ll find signature foods like Kushikatsu (deep fried pork on a stick), and Okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake garnished with shaved bonito flakes). Food is hugely significant in Japan, with chefs undergoing years of training before being ‘allowed’ to serve customers. Sushi chefs train for five years under an Itamae (sushi master) before they’re allowed to prepare sushi rice, with the journey to Itamae taking as many as a further 15 years. Forget what you think you know about sushi when dining anywhere in Japan – staples are what westerners know as sashimi, nigiri and tempura, with requests for avocadobedecked California Rolls or sweet chilli anything likely to lead to you being politely shown the door. That politeness is inherent in Japanese culture and permeates every interaction. While many Japanese people are capable of speaking reasonable English, many won’t talk to foreigners in the language for fear of shaming themselves by making a mistake. That aside, locals are likely to go out of their way to assist lost-looking tourists in a game of mime, or by asking around for someone nearby who is willing to brave an English exchange. The handling of cash is governed by etiquette, too. When paying for anything in a shop in cash (amazingly, incredibly few Japanese retailers accept credit cards), the bills and coins are placed in a

shallow container alongside the till, with the cashier then processing the transaction and placing any change back on the container for the buyer to reclaim – money never changes hands directly. There are scores of rules around dining, too – including never poking at your food with chopsticks or waving them around. Sake is also always poured for you – it’s considered impolite to pour some for yourself unless you’re dining alone. While Tokyo often tops lists of the world’s most expensive cities, it’s possible to eat cheaply – and well – from the multiple convenience stores on every street, or by enjoying tapas-style food at Izakaya restaurants, where grilled chicken skewers are a cheap and convenient staple. Preordered and paid tourist rail passes give visitors access to most of the rail networks in Tokyo – and many Shinkansen trips – making getting around relatively cost-effective, too. Japan isn’t the world’s most perfect place – but for South Africans wanting a glimpse of an alien culture that caters for gaijin (foreigners) to a point, it’s a beautiful and accessible destination worth adding to your travel bucket list.

ocrates Georgiades, better known as Sox, has been Djing for over 12 years. A born entertainer, he truly believes and lives by his motto of “it’s not what you play, it’s how you play it.” His highlights include playing exclusive parties for Robert de Niro, Paris Hilton, Jamiroquai and the Black Eyed Peas, to name a few, as well as private parties for local celebrities like Bob Skinstad and Graeme Smith. “I love these remixes as they add a nice vibey element to these classics without butchering or taking anything away from the brilliant original. They are versatile remixes that you can enjoy while sipping sundowners on holiday, entertaining guests, starting a party or just play in your car on a road trip. I hope you like them as much as I do.” says Sox.

SCREEN TIME

A Coming of Age Story. Text & Images: © Uzanenkosi (Worker Ant @ ANTS)

N

othing has changed more than the screen. Today, we take it everywhere we go. In our pockets, and handbags. Those with a dependable mental Rolodex can reel back to beepers. Go too far back, and you find yourself on a street corner armed with only a whistle. Spool a little forward to the first time “what’s your number?” cost you a date and left you feeling like the family home phone, suddenly not good enough. Welcome to 1994. The year Vodacom received its first commercial calls, and South Africa held its first democratic elections. The youngest eligible voters are born early 1976. Months before June ’16. Skip a few, because no one fast-forwards any more. South Africa holds its sixth democratic elections. A month away from June ’16 commemorations. The youngest eligible voters; unlocked, couldn’t use; locked, couldn’t hack the ’94 home phone let alone sweet talk the girl’s parents to hand

her the phone. Now, the phone screen can give you access to face to face with loved ones, access to all the music and books in the world. News at your fingertips and a connection to everything and everyone. At once. You are a journalist and witness. Armed with a camera and video recorder. For the entrepreneur, it’s the Johannesburg gold rush of 1886, most South Africans missed out on. Can you imagine the impact the generation of ’76 would have had on the world - armed with such screens - live on Instagram or facebook? Yes, maybe the cost of anonymity would have stacked the deck even more for our comrades and revolution, but I am willing to bet my VCR we would have selfies of most of the perpetrators. Where geotagging would have led many to the bones of their loved ones, truth and reconciliation would be part of our June ’16 celebrations. South Africa would have an extensively documented history.

All too often, we think it is better on the big screen, but the small screen has proven to be no place for idiots. How brilliant and civilised can you really be to delineate humanity to skin deep? In our coming of age story as a country and a people, let’s hope the future leaves us as unrecognisable from our past as it has the phone but just as smart and connected.

BOOKS

‘I am unleashed from my mother’s womb while she is choosing tomatoes at Ralphs. My birth is one of her favourite stories to tell.’ - A Walk at Midnight, Alex van Tonder

A Walk at Midnight Alex van tonder

Yanga is the 3 Tins champion in his community. His life changes completely when his 3 Tins skills are channelled into cricket. Watch Yanga’s crazy talent as it takes him from local school team to the global sporting stage as one of the stars of the South African Cricket World Cup team.

‘I am unleashed from my mother’s womb while she is choosing tomatoes at Ralphs. My birth is one of her favourite stories to tell.’ This is how the reader is introduced to Jane, the main protagonist, in Alex van Tonder’s new novel, A Walk at Midnight. Jane is a complicated character who readers will empathise with as the novel moves between past and present, revealing some very dark secrets. Secrets that daren’t be spoken of. Van Tonder’s wit, sarcasm and sharp characterisations make for compelling reading. Her Twitter bio states, ‘All that we see and seem is but a screen grab from someone else’s WhatsApp’, and in this carefully crafted psychological thriller, all is not what it seems. A ‘griplit’ novel at its best, Alex van Tonder captures domestic suspense at its finest.

The Moment of Lift melinda gates Melinda Gates is listed as the third most powerful woman in the world according to Forbes magazine, Melinda is using this power to encourage citizens around the world to get active in improving their communities. Along the way, she has realised that the quickest way to do this is by uplifting and bettering the circumstances of women. In The Moment of Lift we meet Melinda at the very beginning of her journey of women empowerment, showing us that we all start somewhere, at the very base

often asking ‘how’. Her first step to committing to the lift was the issue of family planning — giving women the ability to choose when they to have children gives them the opportunity to map out their lives in an empowering and intentional way. Written with emotion, candour, and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.

TRAVEL FITNESS

On the Move with Liezel Van Der Westhuizen She’s a world-class traveller and a fitness junkie! Not only did she recently travel to Venice to MC an international gig, but Liezel has also travelled to India and successfully cycled over the famous Himalayas from Mandali to Khardung La covering the mean distance of 550km in 10 days at altitudes of up to 18 330 feet. The bubbly Radio and TV Personality knows just how to keep fit, no matter where she is in the world, and no matter what obstacle she’s faced with. “But here’s one thing we may not think of often - staying fit and active on an aeroplane. For someone like me who travels often, I think of creative ways of staying fit no matter where I am” Liezel says. Text & Images: © Supplied

Liezel’s quick and easy in-flight fitness tips:

1.

TRICEP SEAT LIFT Place your hands on the armrests but make sure you do not disturb the person sitting next to you. Point your elbows backwards and lift yourself using your tricep muscles, repeat 5-10 times every hour.

So where to next for Liezel? “I’m currently in Seychelles for a week of sailing, and working towards my skipper’s license, and then officially doing the full course back home in South Africa in July and August.”

2.

BATHROOM QUEUE STRETCH While waiting in the line to use the bathroom on the plane. I usually do the following: Stand with your feet together and bend slowly down at the waist to try to touch your feet, don’t overstretch. Only stretch as far as you can go. I usually do five of these. This extends and relieves back muscle tension. 80 | aha MOMENTS!

3.

HEEL RAISES This can be done in your seat. While seated with feet on the floor, lift up heels and squeeze calf muscles, then lower heels back down. Do 30 repetitions every 30 minutes.
