“It’s a great summer wine, packed with fruit and complexity.”

Fairview’s Maiden RosÉ wine With a name as enticing as its delicate rose petal hue, Fairview is proud to introduce a more serious style of rosé wine, the Fairview Rose Quartz 2016. With a trendsetting blend of 41% Grenache Noir, 39% Carignan and 20% Cinsault, these versatile and striking varieties have resulted in Fairview’s first premium rosé, Rose Quartz 2016. For the winemaking process, the grapes were handpicked

and transferred to the cellar, where they underwent whole-bunch pressing, leaving the juice to settle overnight. Then, the juice was racked off the lees and 45% was fermented in older French oak barrels before it was meticulously blended and bottled. The result is a wine that displays a beautiful rose petal hue, and offers stunning notes of fresh quince, cherries and pomegranate on the nose, ending off with a

crisp mineral finish. “Rosé wine is the perfect ‘in-between’ wine. Our pale, fresh Rose Quartz is a welcome addition to the range. It’s a great summer wine, packed with fruit and complexity,” says winemaker Anthony de Jager. This very versatile wine is well balanced and delicious when paired with salads, creamy pasta. aha MOMENTS! | November - December 2016 | 9

All things Beauty! LIPIDOL Protect your skin this summer Summer is around the corner and the importance of wearing sunscreen daily has never been more pertinent. Not only can a good sunscreen prevent the development skin cancer, which is on the rise in South Africa, it helps prevent pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and slows down the development of wrinkled, prematurely ageing skin. With an SPF20, the Lipidol Sunscreen Oil provides protection from UVA and UVB, while maintaining good skin health by supplementing the skin’s natural oily layer stripped away by the sun, wind and water. Contrary to popular belief, the notion that sun is attracted to oils on the skin is untrue, and in fact the use of an oil-based sun care product is a great way to ensure your skin remains protected during South Africa’s hotter months. John Knowlton, cosmetic scientist and owner of Cosmetic Solutions, explains that many of the safest and most effective sunscreen ingredients are in fact oilsoluble. This means that oil-based skin care products represent the ideal vehicle for applying them evenly to the skin. “Indeed, the fact that Lipidol Sunscreen Oil has the ability to form a continuous film over the skin’s surface means that it is highly effective in protecting the skin against the sun’s harmful rays,” says Knowlton. In addition to this, Lipidol Sunscreen Oil prevents

skin dehydration and doesn’t leave a white film on the skin, making it a great daily moisturiser. Popular TV presenter, actor and model, Masego “Maps” Maponyane, recently shared his belief in the product saying, “I spend a lot of time in the sun and can’t live without SPF. I love the new Lipidol Sunscreen Oil as it deeply nourishes my skin while protecting it. It also doesn’t leave a greasy white film on top of my skin.” Lipidol Sunscreen Oil is coloured with natural plant extracts and scented with Cypress and Basil essential oils. On the skin, Cypress controls excessive water loss and Basil has a refreshing, energizing action.

HEALTH

Being Smart under the Sun

this summer

By Dr Irshad Mohummed Essack [M.B.Ch.B F.C. Derm (SA)] – Dermatologist | Images Sourced

Being safe in the sun this summer

B

eing under the sun can be a heart-warming and relaxing experience. In addition, the sun can provide many health related benefits, such as activating Vitamin D. However, too much sun can have adverse effects such as photodamage and skin cancer. As we are likely to spend a fair amount of time outdoors these holidays with the sunny weather that we are blessed to have this season, who can blame us? Whether it’s a braai out in the backyard or a trip to the beach, on safari or hiking, enjoying our diverse wildlife or a day fly fishing or a round of golf, sun protection should become a part of our lifestyle and culture. Remember that skin cancer affects people of all races, not only Caucasians. So… where do we draw the line? How can we have a balance of enjoying the sunshine without causing harm to our bodies at the same time? We chat to Dr Irshad Mohummed, who has some tips on protecting our skin this summer.

14 | November - December 2016 | aha MOMENTS!

1.

Ensure that you do not burn

Sunburn today, can manifest as skin cancer years later. The risk of skin cancer doubles with more than just 5 sunburns in your lifetime. Sunbathing to a crisp is not recommended, and damage from the sun is worsened with tanning oils (which are DIFFERENT from sunscreens and sunblock). NEVER fall asleep while you are exposed to the sun. Sun bathing to the point of feeling hot and then going into the water for a while and then returning to sunbathe with a wet (undried) skin worsens the problem. The dome-shaped water droplets act as millions of magnifying glasses and concentrate the rays of sunlight under them, which intensifies the burn.

2.

Choose the right clothing

Darker colours and tighter, closer woven fabrics are better options – especially silk and polyester. Choose certified, tested fabrics with a high SPF / UPF rating. There are a number of companies that make these.

3.

Wear a hat

Choose a rim more than 4 inches wide. A peak cap only provides coverage for the scalp and forehead, whereas a floppy hat covers the ears, nape of the neck and upper back as well. This will reduce UV exposure by 70% for the head and neck. Avoid straw hats that are not finely or tightly woven.

4.

Sunglasses

7.

Seek the shade

Avoid outdoor activities between 10h00 and 16h00, when the UV intensity is expected to be at its peak. UV intensity is determined by the angle of the sun’s rays and not by temperature. Use the ‘Shadow rule’ – “if your shadow is shorter than you are, seek the shade”

8.

Do regular SPOT checks

Stand naked in front of a full-length mirror and use a small hand held mirror to see difficult areas, and start with your face and work your way down, including the soles of your feet and between the toes. Look for any changes in moles or the appearance of new ones. Some methods are worth remembering :

Eyes are not immune to skin cancer – ocular skin cancer is also on the increase. Choose sunglasses that are certified, and tested to block out UV. Large frames and wraparound sunglasses offer the best protection.

ABCDEFG – Asymmetry, Border irregularities, Colour variations, Diameter (area/size), Elevation (of a previously flat spot), Fast Growing

5.

CLUE – Colour variation, “Lonely” or Unique (the ‘odd one out‘ or the Ugly Duckling sign), Evolution

Use a sunscreen

DAILY!!! Make sure it’s a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply 30 mins prior to exposure and reapply every TWO hours when outdoors. Reapply more frequently if indulging in wet activities or water sports, bearing in mind that your sunscreen will wash off in water, and drying with a towel will further diminish the protective value. Don’t forget other exposed areas – scalp, ears, neck and back of the hands. Sunscreen is a fantastic first-line defence but does not render you invincible! Accompany sunscreen applications with other common-sense sun safe practices.

6.

If any changes are noted, make an appointment to see a dermatologist.

These tips ought to be applied everywhere you go, not just when you are on holiday. There is no need to become paranoid about sun exposure. However, responsible behaviour will hold you in good stead and you will age more gracefully too! Enjoy the sun... but be smart!

Say ‘No’ to Sunbeds / Tanning salons

The frequent use of a sunbed (more than once a month) increases your risk of skin cancer by 55%. Remember that these are devices that deliver high doses of UV in a short period of time. This risk is increased for those using sun beds from their 20’s. Spray-on or Self-tans offer a safer alternative.

Dr Essack is a dermatologist in private practice in Johannesburg, Gauteng, RSA. He is registered with the Dermatology Society of South Africa (DSSA) and the South African Society of Dermatologic Surgery (SASDS). His areas of interest include skin cancers and he is also an executive member of the Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA).

How SA’s media entrepreneur

Jo-Ann Strauss, enjoys her festive holidays...

South Africa’s former beauty queen, business woman, media mogul and inspirational speaker Jo-Ann Strauss chats to us about her Christmas, travel adventures and being a mother. By Dineo Motloutsi | Images Supplied

I

t only takes a quick scroll through Jo-Ann’s social media accounts to realise she is full of life, a loving mother and hard-working media entrepreneur. Since winning the Miss SA title in 2000, Jo-Ann has been in the limelight of local and international media. She has co-hosted SABC2’s travel show Pasella, produced and hosted her own celebrity beauty talk show, Glambition on eTV, and is now on SABC 3’s Top Billing, a travel and lifestyle magazine show. As many would say, this woman is more than just a pretty face. She is now doing her part in the boardroom as one of the directors of Media 24 Limited, and has also joined an investment company, Partnerships Investments. We also see her as the MC of many events for corporate, charity and fashion shows. As we get into the festive season and Christmas holidays, with a busy schedule like hers, juggling between a media career, family and business, one would really wonder what Christmas means to her and what it looks like. “It means time with loved ones and cherishing the time we have. We then enjoy a lovely traditional German Christmas

meal and when we come back from skiing, my father-in-law has Kartoffelsuppe ready for us - potato soup.” “We usually spend our Christmas in Germany and enjoy a white Christmas with the family there. We aim to ski as much as possible and enjoy the snow and all the fun that comes with that. On Christmas Eve, we sing carols around the tree, open gifts and just enjoy being part of a lovely international family,” says Jo-Ann. Speaking of gifts, Christmas time is all about exchanging gifts with family members, as an expression of love and appreciation they feel for each other. For a woman of elegance and class like her, who would have guessed that she has a different approach when it comes to giving gifts. She shared that she would rather dedicate her time and effort into making something special, rather than a high priced gift. As a beauty queen, you would expect her to be high in heels and be glamorous all the time, but the reality is actually the opposite, she does get in the kitchen and make magic happen. “I’d probably bake you a cake or make you a special body scrub. A friend

aha MOMENTS! | November - December 2016 | 23

made us the most incredible lemon cordial and limoncello last year and I was inspired.” For her, just get The Nutcracker tickets, as she loves ballet and usually goes during this season. “I have always loved ballet and danced for seven years myself.” We asked Jo-Ann, if she were to invite famous figures from the past and present to her Christmas dinner, who it would be? She responded, “I’d invite Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, as well as Jacob Zuma, Julius Malema, Thuli Madonsela and Nelson Mandela - imagine the interesting dinner conversations - maybe we’d include Trevor Noah, as I’m sure we’d all need some humour to dilute the debates.” It seems media careers and personalities thrive in Johannesburg because the entertainment industry dominates a lot in this city, with many celebrities having settled here as it is closer to work, but Jo-Ann didn’t. Being one of the Top Billing presenters; we could have seen her settle in this city. But to my surprise, she instead molded her career and built her home in Cape Town where she was born and bred. She says she loves the energy in Johannesburg and how people have a ‘go-getter’ attitude, but for her, the lifestyle in Cape Town is unbeatable. “We enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset and my husband kitesurfs and SUP’s, so we need the ocean. Also, I love the vineyards and that everything is at most an hour away. I grew up in Cape Town and my family is here, which is always lovely, with children in particular.” As a mother and wife with a career that requires a lot of travel, Jo-Ann seems to have a love for Munich, the third largest city in Germany. Evidence of this is her social media updates on her frequent travels to this city. And she admits, Munich is her favourite travel destination thus far. “My husband comes from Munich and I’ve learnt German, so I feel like a local there. It’s a beautiful little city, has lots of historical buildings and natural beauty surrounding it - quite like Cape Town. We ski close by and then enjoy the city life too. And who could say no to an ice cold German beer in summer in one of the many green beer gardens. I actually have a dirndl now - the traditional dress of Bavaria (the region) and wear it on special occasions.”

24 | November - December 2016 | aha MOMENTS!

Being a family of four, including her little daughter who became part of the family earlier this year, she says she loves travelling with her family. She travelled to Berlin with her new born baby girl, and attended the Berlin fashion week with her. Jo-Ann explained that she loves seeing new things with her family and enjoying each other’s company. “I have been fortunate to travel a lot with Top Billing, but now I see things differently with my family. We spend more time in one spot and we’re trying to master the art of ‘gypsetting’ - we mix work and play at times and we’re working on taking longer trips with work and vacation blurred so that we can experience destinations on a different level.” Based on her travel experience with her children, Jo-Ann advises parents travelling with their children to always prepare very well as they take on their journey. “Pack in advance so you don’t start off your travels frazzled. And, remember that your energy becomes your children’s energy. So if you are stressed, they’ll end up stressed too. Pack lots of toys and snacks. I also ensure that my gadgets are sorted as well; I always make sure that my most important device, which is the Samsung S7 is fully charged and the power bank too. So I can take the best pics and I have all my travel apps on there. And my music to go running in a new city - I love doing this!” As we will be tapping into the New Year soon, she says 2016 has been a beautiful year for her. “I’m looking forward to a kind, happy and balanced 2017.”

ART

The Durban artist lets us into her art journey. By Dineo Motloutsi | Images Supplied

L

iving in Durban the sunniest part of South Africa, is the fine arts artist Julia Forman whose work captures essence of the subject. This humble artist paints with passion and emotion directing the brush. She describes her work as bright and colourful. Julia loves playing with new ideas which pop up as she works and the spectrum of colour which leads to her changing her paintings. As few artists would, Julia’s work capture images we might have seen at some time, those special moments in time. Her figures are more about attitude and character, rather than perfect renditions. “When I complete figure painting, the character and I have become one, having spent many hours together, we know each other well,” she explains. She’s exhibited around the country in various shows such as the Decorex Cape Town, the Johannesburg Art in the Park and Hilton Arts Festival for the past 9 years. Her work is also presented in galleries around Durban, Cape Town and the Drakensberg and is also found in private and corporate collections both locally and internationally. Julia is inspired by contrasts in colour, lights and shade. She was born in Pretoria but moved to Durban at an early age where she grew up with her sister and brother; she still calls this city home to this day. Always having had passion for art, she never pursued it as a career however instead qualified as a professional teacher. While raising her children, she actively got involved in fine arts, painting on fabric, pottery and clothing. She drew more inspiration from her youngest son who showed talent in visual art and ventured to take an art lesson. Julia emphasized that she was hooked from day one and have never stopped since. An opportunity which is not presented to many artists, Julia was honoured with 32 | November - December 2016 | aha MOMENTS!

an opportunity to paint on the fabric used by local designer Gideon, for fashion shows, which was an exciting challenge in a different medium for her. She has been under the tutelage of different teachers over the years and has conducted her own workshops, aiming to help people find their own voice in the arts.

“ When I complete a figure painting, the character and I have become one. Having spent many hours together, we know each other well . ” Many people seem to undermine the fine art profession, but this was not the case with Julia’s family. She is grateful to her extremely understanding and supportive family who allowed her to pursue art. Added to this, she is happy to have fellow artists who are her special friends; they encourage, listen, and offer advice and often exhibit alongside her. “I am honoured to share these experiences with them.” So far in her art career she has encountered a very few obstacles. Julia brought to our attention that it happens for most artists; that they reach a stage in their work where they feel stuck. “ I have found the only solution is to push on through this, try something different, challenge myself. Often this point comes before a new level is attained in my work. Not for the fainthearted. Contrary to popular belief, art is a rollercoaster of emotions.”

The science behind selling THE FESTIVE SEASON Get wise to the clever tactics used by retailers to encourage us to spend a little more over the festive season. By Brigitte Jones | Image Supplied

B

eing married to a man who vehemently hates Boney M is tricky around the festive season. While he swears it’s the reason he stays out of shopping malls in December, I nobly give him credit for spotting this trick that gets us to spend a little extra at Christmas time. He quietly and efficiently orders all of his gifts online and never finds himself in a queue at late night shopping on the 23rd December.

Unlike yours truly. I have always resisted the phrase ‘subliminal marketing’ - that subtle placement of goods, music and smells that encourages whipping out our credit cards without us realising. Having done a bit of research however, this science sadly seems to be sound. And so herewith are a list of clever little tactics that retailers use to nudge us to

1.

Christmas carols playing has been proven, regardless of religion, to make shoppers linger longer. I suspect lyrics like “All I want for Christmas” also help immensely. Music with a beat slower than a human heartbeat is apparently proven to slow down the pace of shoppers, whilst evoking feelings of nostalgia (those fuzzy feelings) from our childhood, and makes us more likely to buy.

2.

Did someone shout SALE? It has been proven that using red stickers, even if the product is not in fact marked-down, convinces us that it is a good price, and attracts the cost-conscious shopper. Two-for-one, or three-for-two stickers, common practice in Europe and the UK for some time, are starting to catch on here.

3.

There is a trend in the chain stores and supermarkets of a single snaking queue to the tills, rather than a queue behind each cash-point. One of the most sought-after display areas are the shelves leading to the till. Certainly the products displayed here during the festive season are things like gift box sets, wrapping paper packs and ‘stocking stuffers”, mostly high profit margin items.

4.

The festive gift sets, mentioned in the previous point, are also hard to assess the value of, as they often contain items not available on-shelf normally (eg a body lotion packaged together with a fragrance). This, together with the fact that the box is beautifully ready-to-go, attracts a healthy margin for the retailer.

5.

The over-use of the number 9. This is not only a festive season trend, but the psychology behind R9.99 catches most of us at some point. When shopping for gifts, you generally have a price range in mind. R399.99 somehow feels satisfyingly notquite-so-bad on a R300 gift budget, because it’s not yet R400 you know...

6.

Baskets with wheels are becoming more and more common in our stores. If one only needs one or two things, a trolley might feel excessive, certainly in the festive season when the aisles are crowded. Be mindful of the fact that a basket with wheels is a lot easier to pop unnecessary items into, than one that needs carrying.

7.

With more than 50% of people being right-handed, apparently people tend to move first to the right when walking into a new shop. Prices of goods on shelves often increment upward from left to right (I will check this when I am next shopping for wine!), and highest margin products are placed at eye level. Often goods are placed on a display table at the entrance to the shop. This is not only to lure the shopper in with new products, but to slow us down so that we start browsing sooner.

spend just a little more over the festive season. Try and spot them as you shop, and not only will you feel like a sharp marketing guru, but you might save a little hard-earned cash in the process: see table below Whilst doing your holiday shopping this year, have a little fun trying to spot these, and more likely than not, your wallet will thank you. Do have yourself a very merry little festive season!

GM TALK

GETTING TO KNOW HP MERENSKY The GM Of The David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa In Zambia

H

P (Hans Peter) Merensky, the General Manager of the David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa in Zambia, has hit the ground running and is enjoying every minute of his time in Zambia. “The people here are amazing. It is an awesome country. The Victoria Falls are incredible as is the Zambezi that I look out on every day.” HP leads a management team that leads their own respective departments (a total staff complement of just over 100). “I am really looking forward to utilising all available resources to attract and grow the business, whilst centering all our energy on delivering a perfect experience for our valued guests,” Merensky explains. “It is critical that we all do the right work at the right level in the hotel – learning to do ‘The Right Thing’ as opposed to ‘Doing Things Right’. Apart from two years spent in corporate, Merensky has worked in the hospitality industry ever since graduating from the Granger Bay Hotel School in Cape Town. “Meeting new people and making a difference in people’s lives, whether it’s our guests or the team I work with, is what I appreciate most about working in this field.” Hotel life has had its funny and strange moments too. “There was the time when a dear elderly – very naked – lady walked through the hotel foyer looking for the concierge, to ask if there were flags available to purchase. She also wanted a new key cut. She had walked out of her hotel room in error, thinking she was going to the hotel bathroom, when she decided to approach reception on the way. The concierge very quickly sprinted across to assist with the request!” This is the first time that Merensky has worked in Zambia and he can’t wait to try the various adrenalin-activities in the Falls area. “I never knew what I was missing. There is so much that makes this country a special destination to visit. Obviously Victoria Falls, the mighty Zambezi and the wildlife are the main drawcards, but the people are also really welcoming and friendly. They complete the experience.” Exciting events are on the cards at the Lodge: “We will be installing a Big Screen in the UJIJI Bar – Happy Hours naturally go hand-in-hand with sport.

“ It is critical that we all do the right work at the right level in the hotel – learning to do ‘The Right Thing’ as opposed to ‘Doing Things Right. ” “A culinary revolution is on the cards too. We will be introducing braais on the Gwembe Terrace and Deck, alongside the Zambezi River. “There are also exciting Conference Packages at our recently opened Victoria Falls Conference Centre and regular Boma Dinners, providing local culinary flair and live entertainment. “Another exciting development currently underway is the refurbishment of our Grand Lady – The Lady Livingstone. We will be introducing a New Gourmet Delivery onboard as soon as she is back on the river serving gorgeous ingredients that will match hers and the Zambezi’s grandeur.”

It’s up to me, 7 Ways to make a difference .This book written by 14-year-old Megan Werner, who provides 7 simple tips and techniques which could change your view of life in many ways. The book has been translated into Afrikaans and Russian. I was so fascinated about having to meet and chat to this young author from Krugersdorp, Johannesburg, who is passionate about making a difference in others’ lives. As I walk towards her, I am welcomed by an inviting, warm smile, and she had just returned from school looking calm and enthusiastic. I feel an aura of determination and passion as she shares with me the reason why she has chosen to write a book of this nature, to simply make a

difference in others’ lives. Megan was inspired by her parents who wrote a book that changed people’s lives and thought she must follow the same route. She wrote this book at the age of 13, putting ideas together on her own! She managed to get Robert Kiyosaki, author of the international bestseller, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, to write a foreword for her book. Her father only helped with editing the book and refining her English as her home language is Afrikaans. It’s not unusual for people to take years to finish writing their books, this however was not the case with Megan, who completed hers in just over two months. “I had to wake up at 4.am every day to make sure that I finish my book because I also had to take care of my school work. I didn’t want to

make the mistake of not finishing it, because it is what most people do. They never finish writing their books.” Megan mentions that waking up that early was the only obstacle she faced, but she was so driven that it never became a challenge for her at all. However, she had a lot of pressure from her friends who questioned her mission to finish writing her book. They were of the opinion that she is still young and people would never listen or learn anything from someone with so little life experience. The book is well written with ten chapters, each discussing a different topic that allows Megan to share some of her experiences in relation to the topic of the chapter, to make it more striking and relevant. This simple yet inspiring read starts with the chapter titled, It’s good to give, where she encourages a way of making a difference in others’ lives by sharing the little we have. She eagerly relates the story of how she and her dad gave a cashier a R100 gratuity describing the absolute joy and excitement of the cashier recounts it as a humbling experience to witness the joy such small gesture means to the person receiving it. If you are a social media guru, you could learn a lot from this book. Chapter seven of the book discusses the positive and negative impacts of social media. Megan relied her older sister Cindy, to write this chapter for her because she has more experience with social media. Cindy shares interesting stories and experiences she has had so far with Snapchat, Facebook and WhatsApp. She once recorded a funny video of herself pulling funny faces and had planned to send it to a friend but unwittingly made public for the whole world to see it fortunately, it was just a silly lighthearted video. Megan is also an inspirational speaker; she attends different corporate and social events to give speeches. Her largest crowd was 5000 people at the National Achievers Conference 2015. Her topics of interest are mostly “Honesty” and “Never listen to negative people”. While public speaking is a challenge for many people, she takes it in her stride explaining how excited yet nervous she felt when she had her first talk, but she simply loves what she’s doing. With a bit of tongue in cheeks she shares she’s now a master of public speaking because of the responses and reactions she normally gets from her audience after her speeches. People would come to me in tears, thanking me for giving them a purpose again, for inspiring them to continue pursuing their dreams and that really motivates me to keep doing it”. This young, goal-driven lady, is also a model who dreams of becoming Miss Universe. “I know that will require a lot of hard work from me; I will first have to be Miss South Africa to reach my goal but that won’t stop me. I will work hard and enter pageants to reach that level.” For a teenager like her, I was curious to hear how she finds a good balance between school, preparing her speeches, promoting her book and doing extramural activities at school, it’s all about prioritizing, she says “I have to know what is more important first and make sure I get it done, I also set goals for myself”. Megan is preparing for a tour in Russia next year to go to promote her book, she will be visiting six countries and ten cities. It’s up to me, 7 ways to make a difference is available on Amazon, and a free downloadable audio is available on her website.

Psychiatric Profession

Aims to Heal the Nation

By DR Bernard Janse van Rensburg | Images Sourced

I

n the past months, student protests across the country have put renewed emphasis on questioning and renouncing the ongoing and perceived dominating presence of our colonial past. It is clear that the need for unity and change in South Africa cannot be denied. Bernard Janse van Rensburg, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of the Witwatersrand and chair of the Local Organising Committee for WPA, believes strongly that there is a need to realise that each person has a social responsibility to be a part of this journey—the journey towards more

comprehensive reconciliation. This concern will be paramount when over 2000 psychiatrists from across the world congregate in Cape Town this November for the World Psychiatric Association International Congress, which will be co-hosted by the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and the South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP). The theme of the congress is “Psychiatry: Integrative Care for the Community,” and it will be the biggest meeting of its kind to be held not only in South Africa, but on any African soil.

This meeting is also looking into psychiatrists’ role in addressing social issues. Issues around reconciliation, transformation and the integration of communities are put at the forefront in order to move towards healing the nation and to achieve comprehensive reconciliation. Transformation includes reconciliation and creating a nation united in the rich diversity of communities previously forced apart and with this notion in mind. The WPA’s call to action is to unpack relevant and current issues. In so doing, different components of psychiatric practice, such as neuroscience, psychotherapy, social involvement, and the cultural-religiousspiritual contexts are integrated. The WPA congress will explore concepts, controversies and consequences of psychiatry’s responsibility and accountability to society in terms of its scope of practice and of what can be considered as psychiatry’s and psychiatrists’ social contract. The concept of a social contract is generally used in a political science context, referring to the relationship between the state and it citizens, and the obligations that both parties may have in their relationship. Psychiatry’s relationship with society should be seen as a contract, and it includes notions of a mutual agreement, a compact, and a “memorandum of agreement” (albeit often mostly unwritten), in which the scope, principles, quality and outcome of such an agreement are specified. In terms of psychiatry, the social contract is all about professionalism and engaging with practitioners and the general public in order to ensure the quality of care in their practice. Apart from active engagement with the users of psychiatric services about clinical and service matters, engagement with the

public at large about mental health care issues generally, is also included in the activities of psychiatry’s social contract. Finding effective ways of establishing a context and opportunity for such engagement with the public in different regions and nationally does propose some challenges. However, being involved in the development of community art, music and drama projects has been identified as one possible vehicle through which to effectively achieve these objectives. During the WPA congress, a number of community arts initiatives will take place. In collaboration with WPA, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) will be performing a concerto, arranged specifically with the WPA in mind, during its 2016 Summer Season. SASOP is particularly proud to be part of this collaboration, which was made possible through the enthusiastic support and guidance of Mr. Louis Heyneman, CEO of the CPO. Other opportunities to engage with the local public during the course of the congress include two productions directed and produced by local psychiatrists: “Madness: Songs of Hope and Despair” (a mixed media production using music, graphic animation, dance and spoken word, directed by Dr Sean Baumann and artwork by Fiona Moodie) and a monodrama/short opera called “Shirt of Fire,” by Dr Pieter L. Cilliers. There still remains stigma attached to mental illness. Community outreaches and efforts to address mental health issues and psychiatric disorders have a long way to go. Knowledge and information on available treatments and multidisciplinary management is required by users of services and their families but also by the broader community and the public.

Through making themselves more accessible and being involved with community-focused activities and projects to improve mental health, psychiatrists as a professional group aim to: • advocate more effectively on behalf of patients; • address stigma towards mental health generally; • contribute to health education and information about psychiatric conditions; • engage with pertinent social issues that may contribute to the development of psychiatric problems and conditions; and • identify the common ground which will enable all stakeholders in mental health to operate as allies on matters of mutual concern.

Coming back to the current issue of student protests in South Africa, Professor Bernard believes that the fabric of our identity as South Africans is being threatened by still unresolved issues of racism and classism. This is dividing us as a nation. For the privileged minority in particular, the compelling argument to ignore this fragmentation and one’s individual responsibility to contribute towards finding a solution may be easily succumbed to.

“ Transformation includes reconciliation and creating a nation united in the rich diversity of communities previously forced apart and with this notion in mind. ” Bernard Janse van Rensburg, Associate Professor Department of Psychiatry, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
