Carnival’s successful return boosts town

PLUS inside...

Link Road delayed again; Amazing aurora; Otter charity expands; bumper what’s on and more

Molton Monthly Magazine - November 2024

Welcome to the November edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. Congratulations to all of the volunteers who organised and ran the South Molton Carnival 2024, and well done to all those who took part and made its return such a huge success.

We have some great pictures, but they don’t really do justice to the amazing atmosphere created, and even the weather held it together! Here’s to next year.

It’s another busy month ahead, especially in South Molton - the annual fireworks, Remembrance. Christmas Lights switchon, festival of food & drink and Winter Wonderland... our what’s on section is packed this month (plus it is Hallowe’en!).

Despite it being a pretty wet and gloomy 12 months, the weather has thrown up some surprises - not least sightings of the ‘Northern Lights’ or aurora borealis. Previously a rare sight this far south and west, it had its most vibrant display so far in October - check out Karolina’s ‘out of this world’ photo of the month. It’s awesome!

This edition has a festive feel, already!

Molton Monthly Magazine is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily updates for news and events on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

Out of this world!

2024 seems to have been the year of the aurora borealis in North Devon, but on Thursday, October 10th the night sky lit up with the most spectacular show of vibrant colours yet.

Luckily regular contributor Karolina Andreasova got a tip-off from her friend Vicky Haines in time to capture this phenomenon from Sheep Fair Field in South Molton for our photo of the month. “I said the word ‘incredible’ possibly a hundred times whilst shooting!” said Karolina. “By 10pm the whole sky was illuminated by the most incredible colours. As it was too big for one ultra wide shot, I combined four images for this picture.”

On the far left is a distinct red line which may be a ‘Steve’ (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), an even rarer spectacle only recently discovered by scientists. Little is known about its formation and why it can sometimes appear during an aurora display. You can see more of Karolina art and photography here: karolinaandreasova.com

Saving Tarka - world leading otter rescue centre to expand

The multi award-winning UK Wild Otter Trust has announced plans to create a second specialist rescue and rehabilitation centre in North Devon. The volunteer-run charity will keep its current site near Kings Nympton, which featured in the original 1979 film ‘Tarka the Otter’.

“Our charity has grown massively in the last 3 years alone and with the increased demand we see the need for a new, larger otter rehabilitation centre,” said founder Dave Webb.

“Our new site will not only be a place for the rehabilitation of rescued otters, but will also have strong elements of sustainability and biodiversity - the existing wildflower meadow will be maintained, a wildlife pond will be created and 500 native trees planted.”

To help, go to: ukwildottertrust.org/donateto-ukwots-new-rehabilitation-centre

The charity has acquired 4 acres of land as part of a five year plan, and the new facility will act as a sister site to the current centre. Since 2016, the UK Wild Otter Trust has helped save more than 200 otters, and has become a world leader in its field.

The new centre will have 25 enclosures, a volunteer building and 4 cub buildings. The expansion means that the wildlife charity will provide 45 specialist enclosures, outdoor cub isolation buildings and 6 indoor cub rooms, giving them a total capacity for approximately 80 rescued otters.

Carnival is a ‘triumph’!

Pages 18 -21

Thousands lined the streets to welcome the return of South Molton Carnival on a chilly Saturday evening on October 12th.

The procession was led by town Mayor Jacqui Footman, driven by David Johns in his classic open-top Triumph Herald. Waving to the crowds, she was followed by the team of Carnival Ambassadors in a horse drawn carriage with Jonathan Waterer from Chittlehampton at the reins.

Claire Bracher, owner of Bar27, told Molton Monthly Magazine, “As chairperson of South Molton Carnival Committee I am over the moon with so much great feedback and all of the lovely messages we have received. It means so much to us as a volunteer group.” (Continued on page 20)

“It will certainly push us to bring an even more spectacular carnival to South Molton in 2025.”

The carnival raised funds to help it return next year, and is donating £1,324 to the Rotary Club of South Molton, who supported its re-launch, to distribute to local charities and good causes. “Thank you ‘amazing South Molton’ and to everyone who participated, volunteered and donated to make the carnival what it was - FABULOUS!! It’s been a pleasure!” added Claire.

South Molton Mayor Jacqui Footman praised the organising team and all those who took part and supported the carnival, “I felt very proud and humbled to be mayor at this time. It was a fabulous day and I’m already looking forward already to next year.”

“My most sincere congratulations go to Claire and the Carnival Committee team on creating a lovely atmosphere and bringing off a stunning event.”

South Molton Carnival is scheduled to return on Saturday, September 27th 2025.

New junction opens but Link Road works further delayed

The newly built bridge at the West Buckland junction on the A361 opened to traffic for the first time late on Friday, October 4th.

However, despite assurances from contractors Griffiths that the £67 million road improvement scheme would be finished by the end of October, the latest schedule of closures on the North Devon Link Road goes up to at least November 9th. The roadworks should have been finished in December 2023.

The new road layout now means you can only turn left to get on and off the Link Road, and you must use the bridge to travel directly between Heddon and West Buckland. It’s designed to eliminate the dangerous right turns which led to several bad crashes over the years.

A freedom of information request sent by Molton Monthly Magazine to Devon County Council received the following reply, “The contractual completion date of these works is December 2029, which takes account of the maintenance period of the landscaping and average speed cameras.” It’s believed this is standard terms and conditions relating to ongoing snagging and maintenance of the road and verges.

Your jobs to do in November

1. Plant Tulip bulbs in containers or in flower beds for a beautiful spring display next year. Plant the bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height.

2. Prune roses to prevent windrock. Shorten the stems of tall bush and shrub roses to reduce windrock during winter gales. Prune to an outward facing bud.

3. Cut leaves of Christmas and Lenten rose type hellebores to make way for the flowers.

4. Cut down faded herbaceous perennials. Penstemons are best dead-headed and left until the spring when they can be cut back further.

5. Pruning and renovation of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out from now throughout the dormant season. Do not prune Prunus species when they are dormant. Evergreens are best left until the spring.

We are having a revamp at the nursery this winter; one of the polytunnels is going to be replaced as we no longer have enough room in the spring for all the bedding plants and hanging baskets. We will also be replacing the perennial beds outside, so that they are slightly raised, to make selecting your plants easier.

Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - hedgehog care and autumn weather

The autumn colours are magnificent at this time of the year, especially if we have a spell of dry weather - this though has been at a premium this past summer.

Yes we have had an abundance of grass, but harvesting of most crops has been testing. There just hasn’t been a prolonged period of sunshine. Even our grapes were ten days late in ripening with the dampness resulting in several bouts of ‘downy mildew’. This reduced yield by 20%. Some vineyards, especially those situated in valleys, have suffered much worse.

As farmers we tend to reflect in this month on the past year and continually try to learn lessons. One consideration we can all do is check our bonfires around November 5th for wildlife before lighting. Hedgehogs especially love nestling into the shelter of a pile of wood.

I am so pleased to see our prickly friends growing in numbers again after several lean years. Our neighbour had a surprise in her house the other day. She couldn’t understand why her two cats were eating their food so quickly. Then one evening the cat flap opened and in shuffled a hedgehog proceeding directly to the cat dish!

‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com)

DON’T PANIC! DAD’S ARMY COMES TO NORTH MOLTON

Captain Mainwaring, Sergeant Wilson and the rest of the Home Guard are marching to North Molton’s Victory Hall this month, for what promises to be a hilarious production of the popular BBC sitcom ‘Dad’s Army’.

The performances are courtesy of North Molton Amateur Dramatics Society (NOMADS) and features all the much-loved characters and catch-phrases!

This year not only marks the 80th anniversary of D Day, it’s the centenary of North Molton’s Victory Hall, as well as being 40 years since NOMADS was formed. The play is directed by former GB News reporter Jeff Moody. “It felt like the perfect time to recreate Britain’s favourite sitcom,” he says. “I have brilliant memories of watching Dad’s

Rehearsing for Dad’s Army

Army with my parents back in the ‘70s and I l’m loving reconnecting with these legends.”

Mick Buckley plays the pompous Captain Mainwaring. “It’s daunting taking on such a familiar role,” said Mick. “But it’s such a good script and I’m loving the challenge.”

Gail Ratcliffe is playing Mainwaring’s love interest, Mrs Gray. “There’s a great atmosphere in rehearsals (pictured above). Everyone’s really enthusiastic and there’s a lot of laughter!” she said.

Community Garden in autumn

It’s been a busy autumn in South Molton Community Garden so far. We’ve been tidying up and getting ready to put everything to bed for the winter.

Our ‘Big Soup’ team day was held during October and we had a very productive session working on the composting area (photo right). The compost bins were moved along to allow more space around the pond, and we’re planning to level out the ground in front of the compost bins to make them easier for everyone to access. We had a good catch up and shared some delicious soup!

The potatoes are out of the ground and we had a fantastic crop with barely any slug damage. Our bean poles suffered in the recent strong winds. Luckily, the beans were nearly finished so it didn’t affect the harvest. We’ve enjoyed sweetcorn and the last of the raspberries this month.

We welcome new members. If you’d like to join us, visit the garden on a Thursday at 2pm (weather permitting). Alternatively, see our website: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Police get ‘life saving’ drug kits

Police in Devon are making a potentially life saving overdose treatment drug available to officers to carry in their first aid kits.

Earlier this year two people died, including one from South Molton, and 10 others were hospitalised after taking drugs containing banned synthetic opioids which can be 500 times stronger heroin.

Superintendent Robert Youngman (pictured right) said, “Vulnerable people who overdose are by no means doing so out of choice. They may have obtained drugs which contain opiates or synthetic opiates of which they weren’t aware.”

Superintendent Robert Youngman with the new kit The kits include guidance on triaging a victim in an overdose situation, and a card to give to medics to notify them that Naloxone has been administered.

Superintendent Youngman added, “Having nasal Naloxone readily available to our officers ensures that we are equipped to step in and help people when they need it most. We aren’t replacing paramedics, but Naloxone helps us to stabilise victims while we wait for the medics. Lives will be saved.”

Water bill refund announced

Water firms have been ordered by Ofwat to pay back £158 million to customers across England & Wales, after missing key targets on pollution, leaks, supply interruptions and falling customer satisfaction. South West Water was given a rating of ‘average’. Final figures will be decided in December, but it’s understood South West Water’s share is £17.4 million, which means around £10 will be credited to customers’ accounts.

Jail for £1million National Trust fraud

A building surveyor has been jailed six and a half years for swindling the National Trust in North Devon out of more than £1million.

Roger Bryant, 73, of Coombe Close, Barnstaple, was convicted of 28 offences following a lengthy trial at Bristol Crown Court relating to submitting false invoices for building work. His sons, James Bryant (49) from Parracombe was sentenced to 4 years in prison, and Scott Bryant (38) of Church Close, Barnstaple, received a two year suspended jail sentence on related charges.

The fraud was first discovered in October 2013 when the National Trust was seeking to update its approach to procurement in the North Devon area and at Arlington Court. Devon & Cornwall Police praised the work of those involved in a “highly complex and lengthy investigation”.

Sian Mitchell from the Crown Prosecution Service said, “At every stage of the investigation Bryant tried to mislead investigators, attempting to hide paperwork and even trying to persuade witnesses to lie. However, the prosecution was able to build a robust case to prove beyond doubt that he was guilty. We are pursuing confiscation proceedings against the defendants to remove any available funds from this fraud.”

No pannier parking

South Molton Town Council has defended its decision to close the Pannier Market car park. A spokesman said, “As part of our vision for the market, it means space can be used to hold additional events throughout the week. It also means we can invest money in ‘facelifting’ the interior so that it is better for concerts and other activities.”

There was an angry reaction on social media to the decision, with many fearing it could impact on those who are less able. The council says it has been monitoring parking use and believes there will be more “positives than negatives”, allowing South Molton Pannier Market to be used to a far higher degree than it ever has been.

Show says ‘thank you’

The organisers of the North Devon Show have thanked all their supporters and sponsors for contributing to a successful 2024 event, which saw 16,000 visitors pass through the gates at Umberleigh Barton Farm (photo opposite page).

“The day was a huge relief after our loss in 2023, and we are pleased to report we have made a profit this year and another show like this next year will put us back in a good financial status. It is always great to see all our visitors enjoying the day with smiles on their faces,” said show secretary Theresa Soanes. The 2025 North Devon Show will be on August 6th.

Military attraction closes

Cobbaton Combat Collection near Chittlehampton closed its doors to the public for the last time at the end of the summer season, after 43 years.

In a statement on social media they thanked all their visitors and supporters over the decades, and all those who came along to say goodbye to the popular tourist attraction in recent weeks.

“The collection will now only be open for events and special occasions. For now, we’re going back to the workshop to continue with restorations, take in new ones and maybe dig out a couple vehicles we haven’t had running for years,” Preston and Tim (pictured right).

Winter fuel bill credit

North Devon Council is offering a £200 credit to around 1,000 elligble pensioners to help with fuel bills this winter. It comes after the government scrapped the universal winter fuel payment. More details on the Household Support Fund are available from the council.
