The Medieval Map on the left shows the roman walled area near what is now Friar Lane and near the river Soar. This area as well as other Roman villages were important cities in Roman Conquered England (43AD to 410AD), with the map on the left housing bath complexes, mosaics and wall paintings. A lot of the roman remains including the mosaics and paintings have been excavated. Including Greyfriars, where the site for the project is located.

The number of students living near Universities has increased since 2001 with many students concentrated in the ‘Castle Ward’ region of Leicester. It is important that the design of the project can reflect this by having study rooms/ seminar rooms as well as social administrative spaces for students to liase.

MATERIAL ETHOS Stone The materials of the surrounding buildings mainly use masonry, bricks and concrete, including the buildings on the previous page. Many of these buildings hold great cultural and historical importance and tie the Friars area of Leicester together.

The King Richard III Visitor’s Centre holds a lot of importance due to the building holding the site of where King Richard III’s body was found and later exchavated and reburied at Leicester Cathedral just opposite to the Centre. The original place where King Richard III’s body was found is exhibited in the centre where the area is walled with stone and just above where the body was found, there is glass.

Stone, therefore is a predominant material in this area as the two most important buildings near the site of the project use stone. In the case of the Leicester Cathedral, it was constructed with stone which was reinforced with iron.

Advantages of stone in construction: - Durable - Long Lasting - Historical Value - Low Maintanence - Aesthetically Pleasing - High Resistance to Fire and Weathering - Eco Friendly Disadvantages of Stone in construction: - Can be time consuming - Cannot be used in certain whether conditions such as rain - Cannot be easily transported - Non renewable - Although relatively eco - friendly both natural and synthetic stone can still have a large carbon footprint if needed to be transported multiple times accross long distances - Does not carry long term sustainability due to the material being a finite resource

Timber Glulam Timber is a very strong construction material with many advantages. One off the key advantages is that it is a sustainable and renewable material and more new buildings are incorporating timber in their construction as a cost effective material.

The reason why this project will be made primarily out of timber is due to the need to be sustainable and look towards the future whilst paying homage to the rich history of Leicester. In almost all construction aspects there is a key need to be sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible in order to minimise the carbon emissions and contribution to global warming.

Thus, this project will be made out of Glulam Timber with concrete being used for the foundation and the green garden space will use stone for the pathway. Ensuring that my design does infact bridge to the King Richard III’s visitor’s centre by using the material used to exhibit the revelation of where his body was originally. The stone pathway is a way to incorporate the stone and to establish a relationship with the surrounding context while the design it self minimises its carbon footprint.

Advantages of Timber in construction: - Durable - Long Lasting - Cost and time effective - High Resistance Weathering - Eco Friendly and Renewable - Non Toxic - Natural Insulator - Easily Transported Disadvantages of Timber in construction: - Susceptibal to erosion over time if not preserved or maintained - Can be affected by condensation - Can attract pests - Needs to be maintained with preservatives from time to time

WOOD INNOVATION DESIGN CENTRE BY MICHAEL GREEN ARCHITECTURE Location: Canada / Size: 4820 sqm / Year: 2014

Conclusion: Timber construction can be innovative and can be a very useful construction material. The building compartmentalises the core of the building for its functions, with lecture theatres and seminar spaces for people to study, meet and innovate. This is important for my design as there needs to be a space solely focused on allowing people such as students to be able to study and innovate.

This building was designed with the idea to create a creative learning space which in turn can enable innovative ideas by designers and engineers alike to come up with innovative ideas for wood construction.

COTTAGE INSPIRED BY A SHIP CABIN BY PRODESI | DOMESI Location: VRANOV NAD DYJÍ, CZECH REPUBLIC/ Size: 61 sqm / Year: 2021

This cottage building is primarily made out of timber and is built in the deep forest of the Czech Republic.

The building contains multiple floors able for both residents and visitors.

The building has a faceted roof design. This was to enable maximise the floor space whilst taking some space from the roof. It also allows for the structure to resist rain as it can flow freely from the structure without a strong need for gutters.

Conclusion: What I have learnt from this design is that timber construction for residential use is a reliable and sustainable source. Also, timber construction as well as other materials allow for innovation of certain designs in order to maximise space in accordance to constraints. In this case, the faceted wooden roof design.

Analysing how people can access the site is important for my design as the entrance to the cafe and seminar rooms need to be placed in an area where it is easily identifiable and can be accessed by both padestrians and motorists.

The sun paths had to be taken into account in order to allow enough natural light into cafe and seminar rooms, as well as the green/garden space.

QUALITY OF LIGHT

Similarly to the sun paths, the quality of light at different times of the year needed to be taken into account due to where the building will be situated on the site, how the lighting will affect the green space/garden on the site, and how it will affect the ampitheatre.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

King Richard III’s remains were found under the car park next to where the site is located. Upon discovery, the vertebrate was found bent, indicating that King Richard III would have had scoliosis. Upon further research conducted at the Univeristy of Leicester, it was concluded that he had scoliosis although at the time of his reign, not many people apart from the nobility and medicial staff would have known about his condition.

I wanted the green garden space to feel connected to King Richard III’s Visitor’s Centre, as the building does contain the place where his remains were found.

The design conceptualised for this project was based on the House of York family emblem which is the white rose

So, the design would include greenery with a pathway connecting the southern end of the site to the ‘Wooden Rose’ building. The pathway would be made out of stone and would resemble the shape of King Richard III’s spine.

In order to recreate the geometry of a rose and to resemble the emblem more, the design would add a geometric point on each function
