This semi-suspended cabin mimics the structure of a bridge, however also facilitating a feasible structure by having concrete footing as the foundation for the timber glulam structure, as well as the timber structure sitting on two concrete beams which are anchored to the surrounding brick walls. To ensure the structure is stable in extreme weather conditions, it was decided that the structure would be placed under one of the brick arches whilst also having steel tension cables anchored to the brick walls; and thus ensuring the structure of the cabin remains intact. CABIN/LIVING SPACE

As this is an off grid cabin, water and ventilation systems were an important factor in the design of the cabin. Both the fresh water tank and septic tanks are on top of the brick archway in the same latitude as the cabin. The pipes descend to the cabin carrying the water to and from the cabin, with the grey water being recycled and filtered via the septic tank.

This semi-suspended off grid cabin is designed with the idea of being elevated and creating the feeling off living on a bridge. This design idea was chosen as this is an off grid cabin, the suspended structure would mean it is unteathered from the earth (in this case, the structure does contain concrete footings, however the cabin is still elevated), and therefore would imply that it is off-grid in both a physical and hyperthetical sense.

The overall structure of the building is designed so that it can be assembled with ease, with the timber posts containing slots for the timber beams. The beams need to be slotted into the posts and then screwed to the concrete beams lying beneath the structure as well as the concrete footing. The timber being used for the structure is glulam as it is can be easily procured, sustainable for the environment and structure and is a strong building material.
