Dear Readers We are truly amazed by the people of our city. You have taken “Kol Yisrael areivim ze l’ze” (All Israel is responsible for one another) to a whole new level. Last month, after fires burned across the country, the residents of Modiin-Maccabim-Reut stepped up. Within hours of the fires in Haifa that left many homeless for Shabbat, you opened your homes to take in strangers. You immediately began collecting clothing, housewares and toiletries for all those communities affected. Within 24 hours, so much clothing was collected that they said not to bring anymore. There were collection points throughout the city – Reut, Kaiser and Buchman – to name a few. You put aside politics and religion and came together as a community. The Iriyah and Mayor Haim Bibas did a great job of keeping the residents informed of fires within the city. Our firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the week keeping us safe. Residents volunteered to patrol open areas in and around the city to guard against arson and brush fires. We are honored to be a part of this amazing city. Kol Hakavod! Chag Chanukah Sameach!

Living the Miracle By: Shonny Solow

We all know that Chanukah celebrates the miracle of the jar of oil. One of the most often asked questions about Chanukah is why we celebrate the miracle for eight days. After all, the first day of oil was not miraculous – the sealed jar of oil was found in the rubble of the Temple and the Kohanim (priests) knew it would last for one day. Having oil on the subsequent seven days until newly purified oil could be made, was a true miracle each day, and would justify a seven-day holiday. (Israelis understand that it’s the teachers’ union that has kept this eight-day holiday afloat.) The Rabbis have debated this question throughout the ages and have come up with a myriad of answers, some technical and some spiritual. They have pointed out connections to the brit milah (circumcision) that takes place on the eighth day and had been banned under Hellenist rule (and could be resumed after the defeat of the Greek army). This suggested that the oil was divided already on the very first day into eight portions, each of which could have burned only for a few hours, yet lasted all day and night, and herald the finding of even one unbroken jar of oil as a miracle unto itself. But Eliyahu Kitov, in his Sefer Hatoda’ah (The Book of our Heritage) brings one more reason, which has had implications for the Jewish people in all the subsequent generations – ours included. He points out that it would have been easy for the Kohanim, seeing that there was only one jar of oil, to postpone the lighting of the menorah for eight days, until they could produce purified oil for the Temple and be certain that the “ner tamid” (perpetual light) of the menorah was constant. Why begin a process, which would abruptly halt after only one day? I can only imagine the discussion that must have taken place amongst the Hasmonean leadership regarding this issue. Yet they lit the oil, confident that they were beginning a process, without concern for whether they could complete it. That is the miracle of the first day of Chanukah. Continued on page 6

We are told in Pirkei Avot, “Lo Alecha Hamelacha Ligmor” we are not required to complete the service of God, but we are also not exempt from beginning that service. It is this belief that has allowed Jews to continue to worship Hashem even in the direst

of times – as inmates in the concentration camps created their makeshift chanukiot, has allowed Jews to take on daunting challenges – as unaffiliated Jews begin the study of Torah as adults, not fazed by its overwhelming greatness, and as

Jews dared to return to Israel after centuries of dispersion, even without a Messiah and Temple. The Zionists who established the Jewish State did not wait until they had a modern army or millions of dollars to develop it. They began by resettling the land and were rewarded for their efforts with miraculous military victories in 1948 and 1967. We learn from this that we need to sometimes take the leap of faith necessary to pursue our goals. As olim, we can sometimes be overwhelmed by the tasks that need to be done to bring peace and prosperity to our country. Our role is to begin the process – allowing our children and grandchildren to keep contributing to the growth of the state, with hope that they continue to live the miracle. Shonny Solow was the Dean of Machon Gold and the Director of the Educational Leadership Advancement Initiative of Bar Ilan University’s Lookstein Center. She lives in Modiin near three of her children and many grandchildren.

Meet Council Member Jonny Cline By: Caryn Meltz & Rachel Kops Jonny Cline is the newest member to join the ModiinMaccabim-Reut city council, replacing Hila Shay Verzan as number two of the Bayit Hayehudi party. Shay Verzan recently stepped down from her position to pursue other work opportunities which presented as a conflict of interest to her council member duties. Cline who had been the Executive Director at the Israeli Fund for UNICEF, took over many of Shay Verzan’s responsibilities and assumed a few others. Cline sits on the External Relations, Reductions in Arnona, Management, Budget, Children’s Rights, Culture and Education Committees. Let’s learn a little about Council Member Jonny Cline… Cline made aliyah at the age of 18 – he came for a gap year to Ein HaNatziv and Maale Gilboa, and one day called up his

parents to inform them that he had made aliyah. He was then drafted into the army into the Nahal olim garin program. After his army service he went to study at Bar Ilan University and lived in Givat Shmuel. He was very involved in the community life there and took upon himself to run the junior year abroad program as well as being active in student politics. Upon graduating he went to work in the hi-tech industry for several years – during this time, he also met his wife Shlomit. When the industry started to suffer, he decided to reinvent himself and enter the non-profit world and got a job with the Shomron Regional Authority where he worked on special projects. Cline had always dreamed of going on shlichut, so as soon as he was in the country for 10 years – the minimum needed in order to be considered for shlichut – he and his wife, went to Winnipeg, Canada. They were slated to have been there for three years, but due to budget cuts, they returned to Israel after 14 months. In 2005, the couple and their two kids, moved to Givat C and Cline continued to work in the non-profit world which became more difficult after the Madoff scandal. Before the 2013 election, Continued on page 10

Cline was approached by Michael Harlap, the head of the Bayit HaYehudi party in Modiin, to join the party as the olim representative and as number three on the ticket.

Given that Cline had lived in Israel for many years coupled with the fact that he was an oleh vatik made him the perfect candidate for the position. The party only won two seats so Cline did not make the cut until Shay Varzan stepped down last month and he moved into the number two position.

Although Cline did not have a seat on the city council, immediately after the election, he volunteered for several committees and was not a novice in sitting in on meetings. He had also already established a connection with Mayor Bibas years earlier when he had toyed with joining the Likud party in Modiin. Now that Cline is serving in his official role as a council member, he is able to bring to the table the expectation of the oleh and the city’s understanding of the oleh needs. Although he doesn’t hold the Absorption Portfolio, he is able to bridge an important gap. “Bottom line, the olim don’t need more ulpan,” said Cline, “they need to be integrated.” In addition to all of the volunteer work that Cline does, he started UK Toremet, which is a UK registered charity that helps make donations to UK, Israeli and overseas charities. Cline said, “My philanthropy is to help facilitate other philanthropy.” Cline wants to be the voice for any issue. He said, “I want to make Modiin-Maccabim-Reut a better place for me, my children, my neighborhood and my city.” Cline can be reached at jonnycline@gmail.com.

An Aliyah Story: Ely & Zippora Razin By: Caryn Meltz & Rachel Kops Ely and Zippora Razin’s aliyah story began as a kid’s dream, followed years later by a thirddate pact to make the big move together. Back when Ely was in eighth grade, he represented Canada in the Chidon Hatanach in Israel. It was Ely’s first trip to Israel and he immediately fell in love with the country. He later spent time at Hebrew University, returned to Canada and then came back to Israel for another year before starting work at a big NY law firm. Like many a lawyer, he disliked the work and lifestyle, but stuck with his job for a year and a half in order to make enough money to move back to Israel. And so he did, in 1995, when he started a company of his own based in Jerusalem, called Expert Ease – a software company,

to, in essence, be a law associate in a box. During this time, he built a chevra with other English speaking friends living in Jerusalem who also hadn’t quite officially made aliyah… yet. They would get together at their own Central Perk in Jerusalem (the apartment of now-Modiin resident Julie Fine) on Sunday nights to watch Friends, Seinfeld and ER – Thursday prime time TV was aired on Sundays (pre-streaming). Ely began to commute to America for work and eventually settled back there for a few years. During this time he met his wife Zippora and made it clear to her that he had every intention of returning to Israel… with her. However, Zippora needed a little convincing and had to finish medical school and residency in psychiatry before the big move. In 2004, an opportunity presented itself and Ely sold his company to Thomson Reuters, while continuing to work for them. Zippora started to build up her private practice while she simultaneously worked as the Assistant Clinical Medical Director for the Palisades Continued on page 14

Medical Center. They decided that they wouldn’t buy a house in America until they bought their dream home in Israel. So, in 2007, Ely went to the New York Hilton for the Israel Housing Fair, with their baby Rachel saddled onto him and looked at projects in Modiin. The couple had never been to Modiin, yet decided to purchase on paper – if nothing else it would be a good investment. They later came on a pilot trip and attended Shabbat davening at Kehillat Shaarei Yonah Menachem, which at the time was located in the Mesuat Neriah school. They were impressed by the warm reception they received from the community and Zippora remembers feeling, “There are like-minded people here who share our Zionist ideals, but also love Ziploc bags! I could live here.” Since the plan was to live in Israel, Ely only spoke Hebrew to the children from the time they were born. Other extended family members thought that this was a bit odd, but it was important to him that their kids would come to Israel speaking the language. In 2011, the family made aliyah (Rachel was 9, Yehuda was 7, Avigayil was 4 and Devora was 1.5) and had an “Abba Speaks English Tekes” on the plane. The kids were shocked to learn how much English their father really knew! Ely continued working for Thomson Reuters, commuting to England once a month. Zippora went through bureaucratic hurdles to transfer her license and receive her specialization in psychiatry. She had to do “staj” (interning) for six months and felt fortunate to

have been able to work in Reut at the Tachanat Briut Hanefesh under Dr. Roi Ben-Gal. She made incredible connections and learned the Hebrew terminology as well as learning her way around the Israeli medical system. She was forced to use and improve her Hebrew skills. Zippora then went on to rent office time from the Oasis Center, run by Jodi Wachspress, and gradually built up her psychiatry practice, working with adolescents and adults. Her therapy model is to work as a team with the patient’s therapist, medical doctor, nutritionist and any other professionals involved with the patient. In 2014, Ely was approached by a venture capital firm with a business idea involving financial information for real estate, in which the market provided nothing. Ely, having an “entrepreneurial soul”, couldn’t resist taking the challenge and said, “Let’s get the business going.” With funding and a PowerPoint presentation in tow, Credifi was born. The team decided to open the office in a central town transportation hub – none other than Modiin – given that the location could attract good talent from both the Modiin area as well as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Beit Shemesh. Today, the company has grown to 65 employees. A third are from Modiin and the surrounding neighborhoods, a third are Israelis, both chiloni and dati, with almost half women (and the rest, men). What started off as a kid’s dream has turned into a reality. “If you make up your mind to make aliyah, it can happen,” said Ely. “You can do anything here that you can do in America… it’s just such a dynamic country. There is much potential, you just have to make it happen, for you and your family.”

Tel Gezer By: Chana Koren

There is no lack of Tanach sites in Israel or near Modiin. One of the most important sites in the area is Tel Gezer. The Tel is located at a strategic point overlooking the Ayalon Valley and the roads leading up the coast from Egypt and the road connecting Jaffa and Jerusalem. We can confirm the actual name of the site – Gezer – by boundary markers around the Tel, clearly stating ‫( תחום גזר‬Gezer boundary). In the second century BCE, Gezer was an important fortified city with strong towers and high walls. The city, then Canaanite, had a cultic center which included 10 monolithic steles, which can still be seen today at the site. The city is mentioned in many Egyptian sources, such as a Thutmose III inscription, stating how he conquered Gezer from the Canaanites (in 1468 BCE). Many tombs

were found on the site, with a wealth of imported goods from the Aegean Sea, showing the wealth of the inhabitants as well as demonstrating that trade was prevalent with distant lands. Another important inscription, The Stele of Merneptach, dating to the 13th

century BCE includes the name of Gezer and is also the most ancient external (outside the Bible) text mentioning Israel as a nation. We know from the Tanach that Joshua defeated the King of Gezer (Joshua 10:33). Looking into Judges (1:29), we find that the tribe of Ephraim in whose land the city of Gezer was located, did not drive the Canaanites out but rather they continued to dwell amongst the Israelites. In the 10th century BCE, Pharaoh burned Gezer to the ground and then proceeded to give it to King Solomon as his daughter’s dowry, when they married (Kings 9:16). Solomon rebuilt the city as a royal Israelite center on the eastern border of Philistia. On site, one is still able to see the city’s gate from this period with chambers on each side of a central passage. Together with Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer, the three formed the administrative centers of Solomon’s’ Kingdom (Kings I 14:25). The Gezer calendar is one of the earliest paleo-Hebrew texts known today and is dated to 10th century BCE (copy located at trail head), and shows the agricultural chores of the seasons in ancient Hebrew script. After the division of the United Kingdom, Gezer was in Israel on the border with Judea. During this time a water system was constructed similar to that of Hazor and Continued on page 20

Rethinking Your Chanukah Gift By: Ronen Goldman

We all have fond memories of Chanukah. A time when family gets together to light the candles, spin the dreidel, bite into a soft doughnut and continue long-standing family traditions. At some point between all the singing and eating, the Chanukah gelt and presents are handed out to the children and grandchildren causing much excitement, even though we all know that within a few short months they are put aside and become a happy memory. This year, instead of heading straight to Toys R Us, take the time to consider a more meaningful gift with a much higher value to your loved ones – providing both financial security and protection for their future. What could be a suitable alternative? Investing for the future Many insurance companies and investment houses offer alternative and competitive savings and investment solutions in addition to the basic options that banks may offer. In doing so, they have opened up the savings and investment market making it a viable

18

option to both the major investor and the “everyday saver”. This Chanukah, instead of putting the money towards a toy, put it towards a monthly deposit in an investments policy which will result in a gift that will be more appreciated in the long term. By depositing as little as 100 NIS per month into a savings account for your child or grandchild (for a period of 20 years at an interest rate of 4%), they will accrue just under 37,000 NIS during this period, 13,000 NIS higher than a savings plan with no investment tool. Whilst the child may not understand the nature of the gift, it will be one that they will surely be grateful for later on in life.

Continue to protect your children into old age Medical advancements and greater longevity have increased the number of long-term nursing care recipients in Israel. The expenses related to such an unexpected change in lifestyle are particularly high. Long-term care insurance (Bituach Siudi), gives Continued on page 20

Megiddo. This system was built to protect the water supply in the time of enemy siege. Gezer, depicted on a relief found in Mesopotamia is dated to the Assyrian siege of 733 BCE with the name Gezaru. Gezer became the Assyrian administrative center of the lands they conquered in this region. What is there to see: Canaanite tower and gate, Solomon’s Gate and fortifications, water system, monolith Canaanite stele (‫)מצבות‬ and the tomb of Sheikh al-Jazari, which has a great outlook from its roof. How to get there from Modiin: Take road 3 to road 44 and turn right (north), continue 3 km to Karmei Yosef and turn right. Turn left onto Gefen and follow the road until the dirt road is on your left and the Tel is in front of you. The road is passable to all vehicles at least 48 hours after last rainfall.

you the peace of mind that your children will be receiving the best care possible, if and when they need it, without becoming a “financial burden” on their family. Selecting the best coverage for your children will provide some protection from the unexpected, since long term care policies offer fixed premiums and have a paid up value built into the policy. This means that the younger one enters the policy, the cheaper the premium (which does not increase with age), as well as the added benefit of a certain percentage of guaranteed coverage (via the paid up value) even if your child decides to stop paying the premiums in the future. Making the most of both options For the ultimate gift, you can combine the two options and provide your child with an investment for the future, and also a policy that will protect them should their circumstances change. It is essential to speak to an insurance professional to build the policies appropriately. Whatever the case, providing your child or grandchild with financial security for the future is the best alternative Chanukah gift they could receive this year.

Using Social Stories to Help ASD Individuals By: Ira Grotsky

Many people feel anxious when faced with a new experience, whether it is starting a new school/job, going on a date or taking the bus for the first time. Most of us will prepare ourselves for new situations in order to alleviate our stress and anxiety by doing research on the internet or speaking to friends. For an individual with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) this might be impossible. Carol Gray, a consultant for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, developed the concept of social stories in 1991. Social stories are used as a tool to help an individual with autism learn social skills as well as what to expect in new situations. Social stories can be created to help individuals manage a variety of situations including going to the doctor, traveling on an airplane, visiting relatives, preparing for social interaction with peers and greeting strangers. A social story always contains certain basic elements: A social story uses positive wording, telling an individual what to expect and not what they are doing wrong.

A social story uses four basic sentence types: descriptive, perspective, directive and affirmative sentences. For example: “A blood test helps a doctor know that I am healthy,” or “When the needle goes into my vein, I will probably feel a tiny poke,” are both descriptive sentences. An example of an affirmative sentence would be: “I will be happy if I try to do everything the doctor asks.” A social story answers the “WH” questions: who, what, when, where, and how. A social story is usually written in the first person. It may also be written in the second person. Since individuals on the autism spectrum are very literal, they must be able to interpret the story literally without altering its intended meaning. Therefore, we use the words “usually “or “sometimes”, so that an individual does not assume something will always happen that way. We do not use “figures of speech” such as “chilling out”, which can be easily misinterpreted if taken literally. Continued on page 27

The primary goal of a social story is to provide an individual with information about their social environment in a step by step fashion. This information prepares them for what to expect and will often reduce their anxiety and minimize any problem behavior. How does a social story work? One way to create a social story is to allow the individual to be the star of the book, with pictures of the person featured prominently throughout the book. These can be created through professional websites, such as Snapfish of Shutterfly where an individual’s picture can be added to the text. It can also be created more simply by using a picture album or scrap book. The following is a story about a 17-year-old boy with Asperger’s disorder, and how a social story helped him. Avraham is a very cooperative young man – he had never had any issues being examined by a doctor or dentist. However, Avraham presented with a great fear of the podiatrist and became very agitated when the podiatrist would examine his feet. When he needed to be seen by a podiatrist, a social story was created that featured Avraham and the podiatrist. A few weeks before the appointment, the social story was regularly read to him to prepare

him for the visit. The story explained the purpose of a podiatrist and what Avraham could expect throughout the examination. On the day of the appointment, Avraham went to his room and pulled out the social story. He presented it to the podiatrist and requested that the doctor read the story with him. After reading the story together, Avraham allowed the doctor to conduct the examination without incident. The story also helped the podiatrist, who then understood the importance of verbalizing what he was doing throughout the examination in order to keep Avraham calm. Social stories are a wonderful way for any child to learn a new social skill or help them manage a new experience. ADD with or without Hyperactivity: AD(H)D What’s It All About? By: Dr. Kevin Schreiber

AD(H)D is a chronic condition affecting 8-10% of the pediatric population. It affects millions of children worldwide and often continues into adulthood. AD(H)D includes a combination of difficulties, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. These components can cause difficulty in successful functioning in life’s tasks and demands. The medical world is continuously learning more and more about this condition. We know that AD(H)D is caused by low levels of two chemicals, Dopamine and Norepinephnrine, in a specific region of the brain. These two neurotransmitters are responsible for enabling our brain cells to transmit messages from one nerve to the next. When this flow is hindered, problems may arise. Why this manifests with varied symptoms in different children is currently unknown. Because AD(H)D is a chemical imbalance, difficulty is almost always present in more than one setting. Difficulty in one setting usually points to other conditions. For example, if the difficulty is only in school, learning disabilities may be more likely

28

than AD(H)D. That being said, one must keep in mind, that how AD(H)D symptoms manifest themselves in different settings, may vary greatly. In school, it might be the need to ask 10 times to take out a book and start working, while at home it might be nightly fights about brushing teeth. Similarly, a child who starts with sudden onset of symptoms as a teenager, makes the diagnosis of AD(H)D less likely. Almost all children with AD(H)D start with symptoms in the preschool years. Signs and symptoms fall into three categories: Inattentiveness: Trouble staying focused, easily distracted, appears not to listen, trouble staying organized, difficulty finishing projects, frequently misplaces or loses items. Hyperactivity: Constantly fidgeting, difficulty sitting still, constantly wandering, talking excessively or quick tempered. Impulsive: Acts without thinking, guesses rather than problem solves, answers questions before fully asked, intrudes on other people’s games or conversations, adrenaline rush seekers, or inability to keep emotions in check.

Everyone has some of the attributes described above. The main question is does someone have too many of these symptoms and does it cause difficulty in their day to day functioning. Most children with AD(H)D will also have co-morbidities that affect their daily routines. These may include sensory problems, fears, anxiety, eating problems and sleep problems, to name a few. So, you think your child may have AD(H)D and you don’t know where to begin. As with most childhood conditions, the best place to start is with your pediatrician. They should be able to guide you how to proceed. If there is a true suspicion for AD(H)D they will most probably refer you to a specialist who should be able to assist. Until recently there were two specialists permitted to diagnose AD(H)D: psychiatrists and neurologists. With the growing need for diagnosticians, the Ministry of Health started training and certifying interested pediatricians to correctly diagnose and treat patients with AD(H)D. There is no definitive test to diagnose AD(H)D. There are many different characteristics and no two individuals will present identically. You will probably be asked to fill out questionnaires to try and further understand from where the difficulty arises. An in-depth discussion between the specialist, you and your child can usually suffice in achieving a diagnosis. In some instances, even after consultation, there still may be an unclear picture and you may be asked to do further testing, an Ivchun Didacti (Didactic evaluation for Learning Disabilities) or

a computerized evaluation, such as TOVA or MOXO. These computerized tests are additional tools in the diagnosis, another piece of the puzzle – they are not a stand-alone, definitive diagnostic tool. If the diagnosis of AD(H)D is made, the next step is treatment options. There is no “quick fix” to help a child who suffers from AD(H)D. There are several different medicinal treatments available. It may take several trials to find the correct medicine and dose for each individual child. There are also supplemental treatments that can assist in the difficulties, including Cognitive Functioning (COGFUN) therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), parenting classes and private hours of schooling within the school system. Treatments such as horseback riding therapy, biofeedback and homeopathy have never been proven effective therapies for AD(H)D. Entertaining the reality that your child may have AD(H)D can be very overwhelming. Rest assured, with an appropriate treatment plan your child can thrive and succeed like any other child! I hope this sheds some light on what could be a very confusing subject. Dr. Kevin Schreiber is a pediatrician, who has been certified by the MOH as an AD(H)D diagnostician. Ice Cream Warms Your Heart and Soul By: Rachel Kops and Caryn Meltz

Hagay Moson-Levi and Moshe BenYakar had been business partners for years when they decided to dabble in a new business venture. They were looking to start a business that they could grow old with and would allow them to spend more time with their families. Although neither of them had worked professionally in the food industry, they were drawn in that direction. The two wanted to build an upscale creative business with meaning. Moshe had read an article about a survey that was conducted in the U.S. that gave him food for thought. A group of people were presented with several food items and were asked to replace all but one with a substitute – in other words, which food could they not live without. The answer – ice cream! It is a food that is soothing and makes you feel better – and not a food to satiate

hunger. Ice cream is considered the hi-tech of the food industry since it is artistic, creative and clean. The duo set out to create a quality product to satisfy the heart and soul. One day while Hagay was drinking coffee with his wife at Marlaz Center, he looked at what used to be Beit Harofim, and saw a for sale sign. That location would become the home of the ice cream parlor. The added bonus to the shop is that unlike other centers in Modiin, the stores are visible from the street. What about a name? Gelarte is a play on words of gelato and art. The name combines ice cream with the artistry that goes into creating every flavor. Since ice cream has generally been thought to be a summer food, they knew that they needed to devise a year-long model. The concept behind the brown and orange color scheme is derived from the impact that color has on mood. As a motivator to bring in customers during the colder winter months, the color brown creates warmth while orange inspires appetite. Moshe said, “We sell cold, but we give warmth.” Moshe and Hagay had a name and a location but they didn’t

know anything about making ice cream. Moshe had a friend who owned an ice cream store and taught them the basics. Afterwards, they found an Italian ice cream maker, Carlo, who shared the tips they needed to start their path to success. They bought their first machine and Erev Rosh Hashana in 2009, Gelarte was open for business. The first flavors they made were strawberry sorbet and French vanilla – two basic flavors, one pareve and one dairy. The two were realists and knew that it would take time for the business to take off, especially in a city that shuts down at 9pm. In order to finance the endeavor, Moshe continued to work at his previous job and Hagay became the face of Gelarte. After working all day, Moshe would come to the store for a few hours and people-watch to learn about the local population. Situated in a sleepy-town didn’t discourage them from keeping the store open until midnight (except Fridays and erev chagim). On the contrary, as Moshe said, “We wanted to create a tradition that people could count on Gelarte being open late and a place to come to.” Hagay added, “Gelarte was the only store for years who was open late in the center, and today, the rest of the restaurants are open as well.” After two years, they were able to upgrade their machinery to the “Rolls Royce” of ice cream machinery thereby cutting down the amount of time it takes to make each flavor from 25 to 8 minutes. The shorter the amount of time the ice cream stays in the machine, the

higher the quality of the ice cream. They only use natural ingredients in all of their products. Every day they sell 13 flavors of sorbet (the largest assortment in the area), six basic ice cream flavors, and about 10 other ice cream flavors that change daily. The menu has expanded to include yogurt, fruit drinks, Belgian waffles, crepes, churros and ice cream cakes. Everything is made fresh in the morning. They pride themselves in giving a personal touch to their product and their service. In the seven years that they have been open for business, Hagay has been the one to make the ice cream and sorbet on a daily basis. When you come to the store during the day, you’re greeted by the owners. Moshe said, “We trust our heads and don’t look at the competition. We keep our minds open 24 hours a day to make the best product possible.” Hagay and Moshe have succeeded in providing warmth to their clients with their mouth-watering delights. In the process, they have been able to hire 17 employees so that they can enjoy family life too. As a customer told Hagay, “Your name suits you as you bring a ‘chagigah’ to everyone in the city.” Gelarte is located in Marlaz Center, 66 Emek Dotan, 08-926-7595. Delivery available and pre-orders for ice cream cakes.

Michael Levin Lone Soldier Center By: Meira Weinstein The Lone Soldier Center in memory of Michael Levin helps thousands of lone soldiers every year – young men and women who leave their family and friends to serve in the IDF and protect the State of Israel and the Jewish people. They can be immigrants, Machal (foreign) volunteers, Israelis from broken homes or from ultra-Orthodox communities who have lost contact with their families. The Center was founded in 2009 by friends of Michael Levin z”l, a lone soldier from Philadelphia, who fell in battle during the Second Lebanon War. Today, we’re proud to be making Michael’s dream a reality, providing the community of 6,400 lone soldiers with “a home away from home”, as well as housing, guidance,

counseling, a strong community, social events and Shabbat meals. At the Center’s core are our 300 core volunteers, many former lone soldiers who work tirelessly to help lone soldiers t h r i v e before, during and after their military service. One of the Center’s most successful campaigns is the Community Meals initiative, in which communities across Israel cook and prepare food for Shabbat and holiday meals taking place at the Lone Soldier Center’s Jerusalem and Tel Aviv branches. Currently, there are over 30 communities who take part in the project feeding hundreds of lone soldiers each month, including two communities in Modiin who alone have provided for seven communal meals, feeding over 600 lone soldiers. Just a few weeks ago, the Modiin community pulled through providing last minute additions to the Center’s Thanksgiving feast for 900 lone soldiers from all around the world. Rachel, a lone soldier from Connecticut, was one of the lone soldiers in attendance. She said, “It meant so much to me to be able to come together with my friends and family from the Lone Soldier Center. You can’t even find turkey in the supermarket here – I couldn’t have had Thanksgiving otherwise! It was such a fun night, the food was amazing, and it was so special knowing so many people from all over Israel and the world care about us.” The program has since been expanded to include communities abroad to enable them to sponsor meals from afar. For more information or to get involved, email Bonnie@lonesoldiercenter.com. To learn more about the Center, visit LoneSoldierCenter.com.

Wheels of Love By: Debbie Zimelman

For the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of taking part in the Alyn Hospital Wheels of Love Charity bike ride. The Wheels of Love ride is a five-day journey that covers approximately 300 kilometers on a bike through either the northern or southern part of the country. The ride, which takes place each year right after the High Holidays, was created to raise money for the Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem. Alyn Hospital is a world leader in the rehabilitation of children who suffer from a broad range of physical disabilities. The children receive extraordinary services regardless of religion or ethnic origin. The goal of the hospital is to rehabilitate the children and equip them with the skills for functioning as independently as possible before returning them to their families as quickly as they are ready. Many of the patients were victims of terror attacks, car

accidents or born with various genetic orders. Riders commit themselves to raising at least $2,500 for the hospital. In addition, they have to train significantly before the ride in order to keep pace with the other riders. This year, nearly 450 riders from around the world took part, raising almost $2.5 million to date! We hope to reach 3 million by the end of 2016. This year’s ride took place in the Judean Desert, and as always, I opted for the off-road terrain track (there are on-road options as well). One of this year’s most memorable days was riding from Arad to Sodom on dirt trails with amazing views and more downhill than uphill riding! One of the ride’s most significant developments in the past few years has been the participation of a group of children undergoing rehabilitation at Alyn, some for several years. They train intensively throughout the year, and their presence has taken the ride to a whole new level. It’s truly an honor for me to climb the hills alongside these extremely motivated young people. It is a mutually beneficial relationship, since each group inspires the other to do their best, reach new physical accomplishments, and fulfill their potential. Several children participated all five

days, while five children rode on tandems with veteran riders for several days through the desert. Watching and helping them along was truly an unforgettable experience for me. Riding a

tandem on a bike path is challenging in and of itself. But riding a tandem up and down rocks and climbing 1,000 meters in one day over 50 kilometers has to be seen to be believed. No less significant was watching the lead riders of the tandems who volunteered to train and ride with the Alyn kids. During our evening breaks, many of them said they felt they had someone else’s life in their hands. As much of the desert riding is very steep and rocky, it was up to the lead rider to maneuver through the obstacles and use all their technical knowledge to keep their co-rider safe. Prior to the ride, they had practiced only on bike paths, so the transition to dirt trails was quite a challenge. When I was debating whether or not to sign up this year or “retire”, a friend of mine said, “You don’t know how much longer you’ll be able to do this… go for it.” I knew she was right. I feel blessed that I’m physically fit to climb mountains on my bike, and that I can spend five days riding through the desert – over rocks, through dirt and mud, in the heat and the morning cold. Despite the challenges involved in raising money each year, there’s nothing like the satisfaction that comes from helping others. A majority of the riders come back year after year. Although we all began to ride for Alyn to help other people, we all agree that the ride has helped shape us and changed our lives as much if not

more than we have helped the hospital. When I took part in my first Alyn ride in 2005, I hadn’t ridden a bike for over 20 years. At the time, I bought a second-hand bike and rode it from the Golan Heights to Jerusalem! Now 10 years later, biking is a huge part of my life. I upgraded my bike, and became a certified bike leader three years ago, leading groups ever since. It is my hope that I will inspire other new riders to take part in what has been one of the most satisfying parts of my life over the last 10 years. For more information about the hospital and the ride, check out www.alynride.org.

Meet the Actresses of WIT

January 10th is opening night of the Women In Theater (WIT) musical extravaganza: JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT! This production showcases women ranging in age from 10-80. Some of these remarkable women shared their thoughts on being part of WIT and fulfilling their dreams. ACTRESS: Polly Hyams Sherman DAY JOB: Midwife ROLE IN JOSEPH: Jacob’s Wife, Bilha Polly, when did you first catch the acting bug? When I was about 7 or 8. I think (acting class) was my mother’s idea to get the kids out of the house on a Sunday _ but I loved it. I was branded the little showoff. What have you learned from your experiences with WIT? Really it’s all about team work and making the team great. Also, working with women on a creative level is very different than a professional level. It’s more raw, true and undisguised. I love really getting to know other members of the cast... and then there is that excitement as we’re nearing show-time. There’s truly a pride in the joy we give to others. It’s unbelievable. What is your dream role? Anything Maggie Smith has played, EVER. Do you have any advice for other actors? If you have a dream – get out there. From the smallest roles to the biggest roles, it’s fun! And when you get there – PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

38

ACTRESS: Shani Block DAY JOB: Account Coordinator at Silicon Valley Communications (a hi-tech PR firm based in Modiin) ROLE in JOSEPH: The Baker and Joseph’s brother Zebulun (Shani is performing in the show with her daughter, Eliana) Shani, when did you first catch the acting bug? I always had a hint of curiosity, but at first I was doing it for my daughter (Eliana). Once I got involved I got hooked. What have you learned from your experiences with WIT? Auditioning for WIT was the first thing I did for myself, since making aliyah. Since then, I’ve developed a connection with other people who think nothing of bursting into song mid-sentence! My experiences with WIT have given me the confidence and drive to keep pushing myself past what I thought were my limits. What is it like performing with your daughter? I am so lucky to be sharing this experience with her. She continues to amaze me with her talent, abilities and dedication! What is your dream role? Actually, I love supporting roles… so I am currently doing my dream role. Do you have any advice for other actors? The hardest part is taking that first step. But once you get started, you’ll never stop. ACTRESS: Zahava Pappagallo DAY JOB: Senior in High School ROLE IN JOSEPH: Brother’s Wife, Dancer, Chorus, and Yishmaelite.

Zahava, when did you first catch the acting bug? When my mom and I would dance and sing around the living room to the Chanukah Festigal. What have you learned from your experiences with WIT? I think over the years that I have been performing with WIT, I have gained confidence and stage presence. I’ve really learned to engage with the audience. Also, I love the dancing – I’ve discovered that dance really gives a show a new level of energy! What is your dream role? Maria from the Sound of Music, or Rizzo from Grease! Do you have any advice for other actors? Be confident with your talents. But, don’t be afraid to make mistakes – that’s how you learn. And practice makes perfect! Who should see the show? Anyone who loves singing and dancing. WIT always puts on amazing professional productions – it’s going to be incredible! ACTRESS: Batya Tchelet DAY JOB: Senior in High School ROLE IN JOSEPH: Junior Narrator Batya, when did you first catch the acting bug? I’ve always liked singing and dancing ever since I was small, but this is my first real production – and I am so excited! What have you learned from your experiences with WIT? I’ve learned to open up and not be so shy... Do you have any advice for other actors? The sky is the limit-never underestimate yourself!!! Who should see the show? Everyone! The music is fantastic. And the show has a great message. Follow your dreams! ACTRESS: Harriet Spitzer DAY JOB: Retired Early Childhood Educator ROLE IN JOSEPH: Mrs. Potiphar Harriet, when did you first catch the acting bug? I think I was born with it! My first performance was for the sisterhood in Yonkers when I was three. By age four I studied at Ms. Betty’s Dancing School. I was in all the school plays. I majored in speech and drama and used it when I was teaching. I have never

stopped. It’s in my genes! What have you learned from your experiences with WIT? I have learned so much! There are a lot of talented young people, it’s a phenomenal thing. It’s great working with people of all ages... we shouldn’t box ourselves into an age group. When I come to rehearsals I feel so good – everyone is so nice and fun to be with. What is your dream role? Oh gosh! There’s so many! Bloody Mary from South Pacific... or I’d love to be Sophie Tucker, singing on the piano. I just love playing every role, it’s fun and so rewarding. Do you have any advice for other actors? Do it! Here’s a tremendous opportunity for religious women to do something that you really love to do. Enjoy yourself! Who should come see the show? Girls, women of all ages, moms and daughters, sisters, friends – everyone should come. It’s so much fun, it’s a phenomenal escape and you may even learn something too!

Hachnasat Sefer Torah By: Judith Arkush

On Thursday, September 15, Kehillat Darchei Zion held a Hachnasat Sefer Torah, which was donated anonymously to the kehilla. Over 150 people took part in a spirited procession from Bet Knesset Choshen along Avnei Hachoshen and across Emek Zvulun to the community’s new home at the Amit Girls’ School. Along with the many young children and families already involved in the community, further celebrants joined the musical procession as it gathered pace, from parks and apartments along the way. The community was honored to be joined by local rabbanim including Rav Chikotai, Chief Rabbi of MaccabimReut, and Rav Elharar, Chief Rabbi of Modiin who addressed the kehilla. Co-gabbai of the kehilla, Simon Levy, said, “This was the perfect event to celebrate the first anniversary of the kehilla, having begun last year for Rosh Hashana in the middle of September. It was wonderful to see all of our members, along with many people from the wider

community coming to celebrate the arrival of the Sefer Torah.” Kehillat Darchei Zion is a community that aims to combine the best elements of community from Chutz La’Aretz, with a real feeling of being in Eretz Yisrael. The community has recently celebrated its first anniversary, and boasts a continually growing range of social and educational activities, all alongside its unique ‘community feel’. Kehillat Darchei Zion is located at 31 Moshe Dayan.

Zalabia – Traditonal Sufganiot & Family Activity Rolled into One By: Eli Mizrchi – Chef at Maccabis “Please Mommy, make us zalabia.” “Honey, we only make zalabia on Chanukah.” For a whole year, we dream about making the sweet treat that we grew up with at home. No matter how much we begged our mother, she only made them on Chanukah. ‫ – זָ ָל ְבי ֶה‬a sufgania whose texture is reminiscent of the familiar Morrocan sfenj, is a sweet food made from wheat flour, deep-fried and soaked in sugar syrup. Some say that it was originally a YeminiteJewish cuisine.

However, it is commonly used with slight modification, in many kitchens in the Far East such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, as well as in the Middle East such as Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and of course… in Israel. Every sect makes Zalabia according to their own taste – small shapes, dipped in sugar syrup; plump sized, coated with sugar powder or filled; pretzel or any other shape. The dough is nice and soft and if you keep your hands wet they won’t get sticky.. We challenge you to be open to the experience and make this a family fun event. Let your children make all different types of shapes, filled with fruit… or not, with a hole or a classic sufgania. The frying should, of course, be left to an adult!

Recipe 1 kilo flour 20 grams dried yeast Coarse salt 4 heaping tablespoons sugar 2 ½ cups of room temperature water Canola oil for frying Filling (optional) Date spread, apple, pear, persimmon or banana Serve with powdered sugar sprinkled on top Preparation: Mix all of the dry ingredients in a bowl, add water gradually until you get a smooth mixture. The dough should be soft enough but not liquidy. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and leave in a warm place to rise – the dough

should grow to double its size (about an hour and a half). Heat up the oil for deep frying.

Zalabia without filling: Now the fun part – invite the children to make their sufganiot any way they want. They should wet their hands in water so that the dough doesn’t stick to them. Have them take in one hand a bit of the mixture and with the other hand, remove the excess. They should roll the dough in

their hands and then pass to an adult to place in the hot oil.

Zalabia with filling: Before frying, add a step – “open” the dough to create an open space. Put a spoonful of your filling of choice in the middle. Close up the sufgania by folding the edges to the middle. Roll it up and deep-fry.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve. Frying tip: If you fry at a temperature of 160-165 degrees, the zalabia will absorb less oil. You can tell the temperature of the oil when placing the dough into it – if it floats then it’s the right temperature, if it “takes a dive” then you need to raise the flame, if it’s “fiery” then you need to lower the flame.
