Dear Readers The municipal elections are coming up after the chagim. This will be Modiin’s fifth election and Mayor Haim Bibas’ third term running for office – this time unopposed. Although, no one is running against Bibas, please note that one still needs to cast the “yellow” ballot for mayor. The other “white” ballot is voting for city council members. History behind the municipal elections – until the 1970s, the municipal elections were similar to that of Knesset. The residents voted for city council and the council members would, in turn, pick the mayor. This system proved to be ineffective and in 1975 a bill was passed to change the system. For the first time in 1978, residents cast two ballots – one for mayor and one for city council. There are 19 council seats. The formula used to calculate how many votes needed to win a mandate for a seat in city council is: number of valid votes divided by number of council seats. Last election it was approximately 1150 votes. Featured in this issue are six of the parties (please note this is a partial list). Please turn to page 24 to meet the candidates. Sixteen of the 19 council members are volunteers (the mayor and two deputies are paid positions). It’s your civic duty to go out on October 30 and vote – municipal voting age is from 17. Chag Sameach! Caryn & Rachel

What Is Brain Health and Why Should I Care? By: Ely Simon, MD I am passionate about brain health. True, as a neurologist my main concern is to identify, diagnose, and treat diseases of the brain. That’s how I was trained, and that is the main reason that patients come to me. However, as the years of experience have amassed, I have become more attuned to the importance of maintaining brain health – even when there is no disease to worry about. Here is why… Let’s start by asking, “What is brain health?” We are used to hearing about heart health and general well-being, but we tend to take the brain for granted. Strangely enough, we give our brains little thought. I think that is largely because we understand so little about it. However, neuroscience research has taught us a lot about the workings of the brain. We now understand that the brain is the organ that controls all the body’s functions. It not only controls your movement and speech, but also your hormones, cardiac

6

rate, and even your stomach function. There are functions that you control consciously, and there are many others that your brain controls on auto-pilot. Even more importantly, your brain is the organ that serves your emotions, your personality, and your spiritual life. In short, your brain is what defines YOU. So, if you are interested in being the best YOU, you must make sure that your brain is in best working order. If something is not optimal, you may feel symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, dizziness, or depressed mood. This is what often happens after a whiplash injury or minor concussion. On the flip side, if you proactively invest in your brain health, you may find that you can think faster, clearer, and be in a better mood than before. This is what happens when you exercise regularly. But, you may ask, “I am doing just fine – Why should I care?” There is now plenty of clinical data that suggests how the Mediterranean-style diet, regular physical and mental exercise,

adequate sleep, and stress reduction can positively influence brain health. Some studies have linked these activities with decreased rates of Alzheimer’s disease, and others have shown better treatment of chronic pain, less depression, and better control of ADHD. The news is that a healthy lifestyle is good for your brain. Working on your brain health can pay off with less stress, less anxiety, less pain, and less depression. When you are more relaxed and better able to focus, you are also more likely to be successful at work and can better manage your relationships at home. Basically, you are happier. I like to conceptualize brain health as comprised of three essential elements. The first is “healthy neurons.” It is important to seek medical attention when you suspect brain illness, so that it can be diagnosed and treated in the best way. That is the realm of physicians specializing in brain disease. The second element is “healthy mind.” A healthy mind means a lot of things, including healthy emotions, healthy stress control, and healthy control of thoughts. That is the realm of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and life coaches. The third element is “healthy lifestyle habits.” The main factors that relate to brain health are sleep, diet, physical exercise, and mental exercise. That is the realm of sleep coaches, dietitians, sports trainers, and cognitive exercise specialists. Other specialists, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, movement therapists, and therapists who utilize various mind-body techniques don’t fit neatly into these categories but are just as important. What if all these professionals worked in a coordinated way to provide 360-degrees-care – wouldn’t that be great? We are at the dawn of a new era in brain medicine. Multi-specialty brain care is recognized as the ideal and is slowly becoming mainstream. A team of talented brain health professionals is working together to realize this ideal right here in Modiin. We will be offering lectures, workshops, and other events to introduce you to the wide world of brain-healthy activities. I urge you to participate. Come and learn. He is Clinical Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY and is the former Director of the Center for Memory and Attention Disorders at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. Siudi Plans – How the Kupot Cholim & Private Policies Interact By: Danny Newman and Ronen Goldman When the conversation of long term care insurance arises, many people (especially those in their younger years) dismiss the idea of the policy as irrelevant. However there are many advantages to purchasing a long term policy at a younger age. Before exploring the financial benefits, it is important to understand the policy itself. Who is considered a long term care recipient by the private insurance companies? With private insurance plans, the qualification for care is based on the inability to perform three out of six ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) or two out of six ADLs if one of them includes incontinence (with certain companies): 1. Standing up and lying down 2. Dressing and undressing oneself 3. Bathing 4. Eating and drinking 5. Toileting / continence 6. Walking unaided Irrespective of the number of aforementioned ADLs, should one suffer from cognitive impairment _ such as Dementia or Alzheimer’s _ the insurance company will also deem the individual as a long term nursing care recipient. In order to activate the policy, the insurance company will allocate a medical professional to carry out an assessment and ascertain if the client is indeed eligible. How much do I need to insure myself for? There are two long term care options currently available in Israel: 1. Home care, which is support and care given within the comfort of one’s home 2. Nursing home care The total cost for home care, including associated extras, is approximately 7,000-9,000 NIS per month. The cost for a private nursing home can often reach in excess of 15,000-20,000 NIS per month. Insuring oneself with those figures in mind should provide adequate coverage if the policy is needed. I thought the Kupat Cholim cover Long Term Care via their Siudi policies? While the Kupot Cholim do offer long term care policies, it is not automatic coverage. The policies are provided by external private insurance companies, and one must apply and receive approval for the coverage to be activated. In the past, the long term care coverage varied from Kupah to Kupah, but as of 2016 8

uniform coverage was implemented for all new members. What are the main elements of coverage provided by the Kupot Cholim policies? The table below is a summary explaining the main elements of the policies which apply to all four Kupot Cholim:

What is the level of coverage for new members joining the Kupat Cholim policies? For new members, the level of coverage will be dependent on the entry age of the person into the plan as indicated in the table at the next page. The Kopat Cholim plans provide limited coverage in terms of financial pay out. In addition, they only provide coverage for the first five years should one become a long term care recipient. How do I supplement the difference? The insurance companies provide a range of private policies, allowing them to be structured according to anticipated needs. For example, one can either purchase plans to cover the life span of a long term care recipient; choose a plan for a limited number of years; or a policy that starts after a predetermined number of years. The latter option is known as a deferred policy. The idea behind the deferred policies is to allow the insured to have the private plan start once the Kupat Cholim plan stops paying; or to self insure a pre-determined period, to reduce the cost of the premiums.

Depending on the type of Siudi policy you are considering, a number have a fixed premium, meaning the premiums are locked in at the rates according to one’s age when initially signing up. It is for this reason that the younger one enters a policy the financially smarter the decision may be. What is the best option for me? While the level of coverage and length of potential pay out in the event of a claim may be limited within the Kupat Cholim Siudi policies, the cost of this plan for many, make this a good financial base on which to build a long term care portfolio. Private plans provide solutions which allow individuals to supplement the coverage offered by the Kupot Cholim.

With increased longevity leading to a greater number of long term care recipients, the need for long term care policies is growing. As a result of the greater number of claims, prices for new private policies continue to increase on a regular basis. Reviewing the level of coverage one has with the Kupat Cholim together with the various supplementary private options with an insurance professional, can ensure one has adequate level of coverage at the most appropriate cost. Behind the Business: Michelle Binovitch By: Rachel Kops and Caryn Meltz Michelle Binovitch came on a trip to Israel six months before deciding to make aliyah from England. While on her vacation flight she happened to meet her future husband, Avi. Because Michelle spoke very little Hebrew, she moved straight to Kibbutz Maagan Michael to study at the ulpan there. After the first ulpan, she moved to Beit Horon (where Avi was a founder; then 30 families) and continued to study at Ulpan Etzion in Jerusalem. With a degree in accounting and economics from Leeds University, she started working in the accounting department at the Jewish Agency. She was immersed in a totally Hebrew-speaking environment at work and as well as at her new home in Beit

10

Horon with her new husband – the combination gave way to her Hebrew improving quickly. After the Jewish Agency, she worked for the tax authorities until their first son Liran was born (they are the proud parents of four boys, Liran, Ronen – who works in ithe business with Michelle – Gil and Alon). Avi was working as a flight steward at El Al and when the airline went on strike in 1982 they thought that the company would fold. Her father suggested trying the insurance business. Avi decided to take a course for insurance agents and Michelle took a course for insurance administration so she could be Avi’s secretary. When the El Al strike ended, Avi returned to work at El Al and Michelle decided to further her newfound career in insurance and took the next course for insurance agents. Michelle has a background in insurance. She started working for her father, knocking on doors and making cold calls appointments in England when she was 15 years old. Michelle’s father became one of the top managers in the UK Continued on page 12

insurance industry. One of his agents (an Israeli living in London) had a brother who owned an insurance agency in Israel, and he gave her the opportunity to open a branch in Givat Zeev. Shortly after, he closed his office, moved out of the country, and left Michelle in charge of the business. She changed the name to Reshet Insurance and the business grew from there. Given that she moved to Israel without the basic connections that most Israelis have (i.e. family, army friends, school friends), she had to create her own inner circle. From there, Michelle entered the world of networking – a tool that Michelle strongly believes in. She became involved in BNI (Business Network International) in Jerusalem where she formed a group and managed two networking groups. She still has clients that she met through her networking groups in Jerusalem. She eventually decided to leave Givat Zeev and built an office onto her home in Beit Horon and worked from there for 15 years. She then moved to an office in Shilat where she worked for a number of years and then moved to Ligad Center.

When she came to Modiin, she became involved with an English-speaking networking group, now called ABC Networking Group, and NIV, the women’s business networking group. The insurance business requires a lot of contacts and connections. Although she doesn’t live in Modiin, the networking groups have enabled her to connect with the Modiin population. Michelle feels that networking groups are essential for any independent business. Her ideal goal is that when people hear the name, Michelle Binovitch, they think insurance. Michelle’s son, Ronen, joined the business four years ago. He is a qualified insurance agent with an amazing business head and technology know-how. He has brought new life to the business with his fresh outlook. The business has grown to include a team of three underwriters – everyone with their own area of expertise. The Leishmaniasis Outbreak By: Michal Solomon, M.D.

Recently there has been news about an outbreak of leishmaniasis disease in Israel. What is Leishmaniasis? Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a non-contagious skin disease that can cause sores to form on the exposed skin, including the skin of the face. Affected people may have single or multiple sores. These sores heal slowly over months to years and may leave scars. The infection is more common in soldiers and children. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is known in Israel by the name Rose of Jericho (“shoshanat yericho”). How does it spread? Leishmanaisis is spread by a bite of a sandfly infected with the Leishmania parasite. The sandfly gets the parasite by biting infected animals (reservoir animal). The sandfly is very small and can hardly be seen. Its size is estimated as a third of the size of a mosquito. The sandflies are most active after dusk and are more common in rural areas. Sandflies fly low and therefore we find many cases in children.

What parasite can cause leishmaniasis? There are two types of Leishmaniasis in Israel: Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica. Each type of parasite has a different reservoir animal and is endemic in different parts of Israel. 1. Leishmania major: Gerbils, psammomys and other rodents serve as reservoir hosts for Leishmania major, which is found in sandy areas in the Arava, the eastern and western Negev, Ramat HaNegev, and in the Beit She’an area. 2. Leishmania tropica: Rock hyraxes also called rock badgers (“shafan sela” in Hebrew), serve as reservoir hosts for Leishmania tropica, which is found in rocky areas of Judea, Samaria, Tiberias, northern Kinneret lake, and in the vicinity of Jerusalem such as Kfar Adumim and Ma’ale Adumim. Leishmania major has been endemic in Israel for many years. However, since the early 2000s, there has been an increase in infections of Leishmania tropica in Israel which is the more severe form of Leishmaniasis. The disease has also spread to new regions in Israel. Ten years ago, the disease was endemic in Peduel and Elkana. Lately, we are experiencing another outbreak Continued on page 16

of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Judea and Samaria, especially in Beit Arie, Alei Zahav, Leshem, Zofim and close to Modiin, in Nili and less common in Kiryat Sefer and Hashmonaim. No cases have been reported in Modiin itself. There are some estimated reasons for the spreading of the disease. It might be related to the construction of rockeries in the settlements which are habitats for the rock badgers. What is the clinical course? The main symptom of this condition is painless skin ulcers. Cutaneous symptoms may appear a few weeks after being bitten by an infected sandfly. Most of the bites appear in the summer time or in the autumn. If you feel a bite, there is no need to run to your dermatologist immediately because the sore develops only 6-8 weeks after the bite. The clinical course of leishmaniasis and the best treatment varies and is determined by the Leishmania species. Among the

endemic pathogens in Israel, the clinical course of L. tropica can be more severe, last longer and be more resistant to treatment in comparison to L. major. It is important to identify the exact species, to determine the best treatment. How is the diagnosis made? If you have sores that don’t disappear in two months and you visited or live in an endemic region, you should see a dermatologist who will refer you to a PCR test to determine the type of the leishmania. What are the treatment options? The main treatment options for endemic cutaneous leishmaniasis are topical treatment by cream (Leshcutan), liquid nitrogen, or intra-lesional injection of pentostam. Occasionally, there are cases of leishmaniasis that require systemic therapy, such as in cases that lack response to local treatment, cases of multiple lesions or if affected areas of the body are such that local treatment cannot be applied. The most common systemic treatments are intravenous pentostam or AmBisome or oral Miltefosine tablets. Dr. Michal Solomon is a senior dermatologist at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, and has a private clinic in Modiin. She can be reached at solomondr1@gmail.com.

A Worthwhile Trip By: Rabbi Darrell Ginsberg The intermediate days of Sukkot can be best described as the slow crawl through traffic heading toward a vacation destination. Unfortunately, the idea of taking a trip to the Temple is not commonly something at the forefront of our minds. While many know of the obligation to visit the Temple during each festival, it can be more challenging to understand why not being able to fulfill this commandment is such a terrible loss. Why is it so critical we visit the Temple three times a year? The Talmud teaches us that there are three commandments that must be fulfilled on each of the shalosh regalim (Chagigah 6b): “R. Jose the Galilean said: Three precepts are enjoined upon Israel when they make their pilgrimage at a festival: the pilgrimageoffering (reiyah), the festive-offering (chagigah) and the rejoicing (simcha).” Rambam codifies these commandments in the Mishneh Torah (Hilchot Chagigah 1:1): “The Jewish people have been commanded to observe three positive commandments on each of the three pilgrimage festivals. They are: to appear before the

Divine Presence, as Exodus 23:17 states: “All of your males shall appear”; bringing a festive offering, as Deuteronomy 16:15 states: “You shall bring a festive offering to God your Lord”; and celebration, as Deuteronomy 16:14 states: “And you shall rejoice in festivals.” The order listed above follows the order as found in the Talmud. However, when we turn to the Sefer HaMitzvot, the compilation of the commandments written by Rambam, there is a change in the order. He first discusses the commandment to go up to Jerusalem three times a year, which is expressed through the chagigah (mitzvah 52). He then lists the commandments for reiyah (53) and simcha (54). Why the difference in order between the Sefer HaMitzvot and the Mishneh Torah? There is a more basic question one could ask; namely, why is there a need for three separate commandments? The solitary directive could have been to travel to the Temple and offer three sacrifices. Why does each require its own charge? Another question concerns the command of reiyah.

What does it mean that one is obligated to “appear” at the Temple? And what of the “simcha”? How is there an actual commandment to “be happy”? Even during the most festive of events, such as a wedding, there is no formal commandment to be happy. The Sefer HaChinuch (88) offers a rationale for the entire institution of travelling to the Temple: “At the root of the precept lies the reason that it is not right to come empty handed before Him. Even though the truth is that He needs nothing from our hands – as it is written, If I were hungry, I would not tell you – nevertheless, in the image of our thoughts we see it as though we are to stand in His presence. And in truth, people are closer to goodness at that place, more than

in any other place….” The above serves as an opening to understanding these special commandments. A fundamental tenet of Judaism is the concept of our forging a relationship with God. This concept should not be understood as “making a friend”; rather, the personification of this relationship is our search to understand Him and His ways. Through studying Torah and the universe around us, we are aware of His infinite wisdom. The impetus to come to the Temple is to gain in this knowledge of Him. Of course, one can perceive this wisdom in something as small as an atom; however, we are drawn to the place of Divine Presence, the shechinah. The Temple is a repository of ideas and concepts, all avenues to a greater understanding of God. The function of “appearing” before God is to express the idea of inquiry and pursuit of knowledge of God.

However, there is another direction in this relationship. A distinct theme of the shalosh regalim is the idea of Divine Providence. Each of these festivals highlights a different aspect of how God relates to the Jewish people. Themes such as protection and salvation abound. The idea of the chagigah is the celebration of this reality, a recognition of the good God does for us. In one sense, then, the idea of our seeking knowledge of God, and the subsequent (but not causal) expression of Divine Providence, completes the “circle” of the bond. We travel to the Temple to embrace this two-way relationship, our pursuit and our reception. However, our seeking of knowledge is a discrete component, as is the recognition of the intervention by Him. We must relate to each one independently, but at the same time recognize how they work together to produce a complete image of this relationship. To this extent, one can see an order manifesting: we first come to the Temple inquiring, followed by the celebration of the Divine Providence. Once we appreciate the magnitude and importance of the relationship, we enter the state of simcha, the result of the process. The obligation of simcha, then, would not appear to “force” oneself to be happy. Rather, when we are in the state of simcha, where our entire mindset is focused on our relationship with God, we exist in our ideal state.

The above concepts point directly to an order – engagement to reception, the resultant entrance into the ideal state of existence. This is the experiential order, as seen in the Mishneh Torah. Why, then, does Rambam posit a different order in Sefer HaMitzvot? In that book, Rambam is detailing the various commandments and their overall source and structure (versus examining their application). Within this context, the source for the entire phenomenon of going up to the Temple is found in the chagigah. The fact the Jewish people were the beneficiaries of the Divine Providence produces the obligation to come to the Temple. The primacy of the chagigah means it should be listed first. The process, though, begins with the reiyah. The opportunity to spend one’s holiday experiencing and celebrating our relationship with God may sound foreign. It may not bring with it the fun of a water park or the enjoyment of a movie. It certainly counters the modern-day view of what to do with “time off”. Think, though, of the lost opportunity. The greatest state of happiness can be found at the one true vacation destination, the Temple. May we merit to return there speedily in our days. Start Where You Are… Use What You Have… Do What You Can … By: Karen Feibusch

In ancient times, there were no treadmills, elliptical machines or exercise bikes. Nor were there any free weights or weight machines. But does that mean people were out of shape? Of course not. Instead, fitness was a way of life – it was survival. Hunting prey, farming and maintaining a home meant that people were constantly moving throughout the day. Despite the fact that these individuals never had any structured workout routines, they rarely suffered from some of the health problems that we see in today’s world. They ate all-natural foods that came from the ground or wild and sustained a high total daily calorie burn. These two combined factors produced a fit and healthy body – one that was agile, strong, and lean. In today’s era, mainly due to modern technology, physical activity is no longer a large part of our daily routine. Our lifestyle

has become more sedentary, resulting in higher cases of heartrelated diseases. Lack of exercise is the single worst risk factor for heart disease, yet most of us still don’t do enough. This doesn’t mean you have to rush to your local gym; becoming just a little more active will make a real difference. Teenagers: Move that body!!! A physically active teenager is a healthy teenager. Developing an exercise routine during the teenage years will set your child up for a healthy, active & less stressful life. It’s a life skill. When children become teenagers, they experience many physical changes. As teens hit puberty, they will gain weight and grow in height. Regular exercise promotes a healthy body image; something which is vital to confidence building during the adolescent years. Body image is directly connected to self-worth. With high self-worth, adolescents believe in and value themselves thus demanding others’ respect. On the other hand, negative body image in adolescents can result in social anxiety, a need to seek approval and validation Israeli workers Over 15 years’ experience English speaking

from others. Staying active can reduce the likelihood of obesity and other weight related problems. Physical activity has a positive mental effect on teens. When humans exercise, endorphins are released. Endorphins are hormones that promote positivity and good feeling. By staying physically active, teenagers can reduce the risk of stress, depression and other mental health issues. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, teenagers should do approximately 60 minutes of physical activity each day in order to ensure mental health. Therefore, today more than ever, in a world where teenagers are glued to their screens, emphasis must be placed on encouraging our children to be physically active. The “Golden Age” of Exercise A recent Swedish study found that physical activity was the number one contributor to longevity. Being active is not just about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years. You’ll not only look better when you exercise; you’ll feel sharper, more energetic and experience a greater sense of well-being. According to the National Institute for Aging, contrary to popular belief, weakness and poor balance are actually linked to inactivity, rather than age. Starting a regular exercise routine can be a challenge at any age and it doesn’t get any easier as you age. You may feel discouraged by health problems, aches and pains or concerns about injuries or falls. While these may seem like good reasons to slow down and take it easy as you age, they are even better reasons to get moving. Becoming more active can energize your mood, relieve stress, help you manage symptoms of illness and pain and improve your overall sense of well-being. No matter what your age or physical condition, it’s never too late to get your body moving, boost your health and outlook and improve how you age. So whatever your stage of life, movement & exercise improves your health and mood, making you into a more positive, proactive individual. Whether you decide to increase your activity levels slightly or to develop and participate in a thorough fitness plan, I hope that you’ll experience the benefits that leading a healthy lifestyle can bring you. Wishing you all a healthy & active New Year!

Haim Bibas How many years have you lived in Modiin? I have been living in Modiin for 21 years. Family life I am married to Yafit and father to Roi, Dana and Shiri. Party affiliation Head of “Haim B’Modiin” list. Why do you want to be on city council? Being on the city council will facilitate the further development of the city – to continue to invest in all the aspects that make our city so successful, to follow through with development in all areas, and to establish Modiin Maccabim Reut as one of the leading cities in Israel. What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? The most important factor in our city is our children. My number one goal is to continue investing in our children’s education ensuring that every child in our city is provided with the best education system. Investing in them is an investment in the future of us all. We will also continue with the momentum of development, the implementation of new projects and the renewal of existing

infrastructure. We will continue to work for our youth, who are a model for their peers throughout the country. We intend to continue to work for the residents of the city of Modiin Maccabim Reut in all areas: education, development, employment, culture, transportation, environment, preservation of heritage sites and innovation. We will continue to develop the technological park and the Einav Center in which we have invested more than 500 million NIS. We have transformed the employment and crafts areas into a national attraction for leading companies and a center of attraction for business and commerce. For more than a decade the city has encouraged aliyah and absorption to the city. Our goals for the upcoming years is to encourage integration within our volunteer programs as well as business opportunities in our city. And we will not forget for a moment the founding generation – the population of veteran citizens. We will continue to work for them on every level in order to give them the best quality of life. This time more than ever, your vote is important both to the municipal authority and to the City Council in order to continue the advancement of Modiin Maccabim Reut as a leading city in the State of Israel.

On October 30th we will all be voting Haim Bibas

Ilan Ben Saadon How many years have you lived in Modiin? I’ve been a resident of Modiin for 22 years and have raised my kids here as well as contributed to the city’s development and success. Family life I’m married to Merav and have three kids – Aviv (20), Noam Haim (17) and Roni (14). Party affiliation The Labor party has chosen to support my candidacy in this election since we share the belief and the pursuit of social justice. The “Ilan For Modiin” movement aspires to represent all residents of Modiin – the young and the old, the secular and the religious, the Anglo community – everyone! Why do you want to be on city council? Modiin is a dream in the making, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the city’s administration in shaping its future. I view myself as a public servant, and have made it my life’s goal to serve the citizens of Modiin, whether young or old, rich or poor, new olim or veteran residents, secular or religious. Modiin with its diverse and highly educated population has the potential of being the most successful city in Israel, and I will not allow it to sink into mediocrity. We are building a city with a thriving community, an excellent education system, a city that takes care of all its people.

What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? Our main points of focus are education, youth, and family. More precisely, our goals are to improve the educational system in opening a vocational school in Modiin, one which will promote technology and innovation, one that will provide its students with both a bagrut and a profession. Additionally, we will subsidize private lessons; make chugim cheaper; improve the public transportation system through the integration of mini buses (moniyot sherut) and adding bus lines for senior citizens; improve employment and create jobs within the city by supporting small businesses and also draw larger companies to Modiin through various incentives and marketing. Last but not least – housing. The housing situation in Israel is untenable! There is no way that our kids will be able to afford to live in Modiin when they grow up. A city that doesn’t draw young people is a city that dies. We are nearing a point of no return and unless we deal with this in the next few years Modiin will cease to be the city we all want it to be. By building smaller properties that are easier to afford, and long term rental options, we can creatively offer young people a place to live. I’m always available, so feel free to contact me directly at 052-2501365 if you need anything.

Moish Levy How many years have you lived in Modiin? We have been living in Modiin for the past 21 years, since the summer of 1997. Family life Married to Nili (we met in the fourth grade!), and father to three sons – all combat soldiers in special units. Party affiliation I lead the “Shachar Osim Chinuch” party, of which I was one of the founders 15 years ago. Our party is comprised of local residents of the city – religious and secular; men and women – all working together in harmony to further develop our city. We are not part of any national political party. Why do you want to be on city council? I have been a member of council for the past 15 years, and deputy mayor for seven years. During this time I have served on almost every city committee addressing the various issues that the municipality deals with. For most of my years on city council I have held the education portfolio, and have had the honor of leading our city to having one of the best education systems in the country. I would like to continue and take this success in education, and duplicate it in other fields. I would also like to be a bridge between the religious and secular

residents within our city, as I have great experience in this area within my personal life and within the Yachad community, of which I am one of its founders. Most importantly, I would like to continue helping people and making this city the best place to live and raise our children. What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? My goal is that our party will lead our city in the following areas: · Bringing together formal and informal education from birth until the army, including chugim and recreation activities. · Caring for youth and young adults. · Sports, culture and community. · Absorption – I grew up in South Africa until the age of nine, I know how it feels to come to Israel as a child without understanding the local language, culture or mentality. We have to continue developing and improving the process for new olim and returning citizens, to ensure their successful aliyah in Modiin and Israel. · Senior citizens – there are about 9,000 senior citizens in the city, and the numbers are growing. We have to draw up a strategic plan in order to meet their needs.

Shahar Mey-On How many years have you lived in Modiin? I have been living in Modiin for 22 years – since the establishment of Modiin. Family life I am 47 and a father of four. Party affiliation Head of “Yesh Atid” – “There Is a Future.” Why do you want to be on city council? For many years I have been involved in community-based activities. Seventeen years ago, I founded the “Akim” branch in Modiin, after undergoing a series of bureaucratic agonies with Idan, my 18-year-old son who suffers from mental disabilities and autism. In the last five years, I served as a member of the Modiin Maccabim Reut municipal council. We did a lot to promote the medium-sized businesses in the city. In addition, by sitting on city council, I was able to lead many social struggles, including the struggle against governmental budget cuts for students with disabilities throughout the country – a fight that we won.

For the first time, we set up a business and entrepreneurship branch in the city council, which works to promote business and entrepreneurship in the city. We encouraged community activities and businesses on Shabbat. We led the municipal bylaws to open supermarkets on Shabbat and voted in favor of appealing to the High Court of Justice against the decision of the Minister of the Interior to cancel the bylaws that we enacted. We promoted equality and worked for people with special needs and young parents and most important, worked to expand our municipal transparency. What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? We still have a lot of work. For us to continue to work for Modiin, we need your support. In the next five years “Yesh Atid” in Modiin will continue to work for the most important issues in the city, as we see it – keeping our city liberal values, equal budget allocation, promoting our education system and take special care for youth and elders.

More equality. More action.

Elad Shimonovich How many years have you lived in Modiin? I have been living in Modiin for twenty years. I moved to the city as a child with my family in 1998. Family life: Son of Irit and Chanan who have always been there for me; brother to Efrat and Or; uncle to Elai; in a relationship with Zlil. Party affiliation The Next Generation – Youth of Modiin Maccabim Reut Why do you want to be on city council? Serving on city council during the last five years enabled me to advance quite a few projects related to the portfolios I held: Culture portfolio: main events and shows; Teen portfolio: opening of the youth centers and the advancement of youth movements; Sport portfolio: improvements in competitive sports and community sport initiatives; Youth portfolio: affordable housing and the establishment of the youth center. I want to continue to advance all these areas in the next coalition not just for the youth but for all residents of the city. What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? Our city needs to address the needs of the youth as they are the next generation of residents. 1. Housing: Our city was built as a cheaper alternative for young couples and turned into a prosperous and successful city that is

not suitable for youth. This starts with housing. During the last five years we promoted and marketed over 4000 housing units in which 20% were given preference to residents of our city. We need to ensure that 50% of the new housing is within the framework of “affordable housing.” 2. Public transportation: One solution is to provide taxi buses – effective and simple and an alternative to Kavim. 3. Education: We need to establish a quality college for the city’s youth that will also bring thousands of students to the city and will change the face of the city. 4. Employment: We must continue to develop the industrial areas and employment in our city. 5. Recreation & nightlife: In order to keep the youth in our city, we need to provide solutions for all aspects of life including recreation. The City Center will be alive and vibrant and is one solution. The biggest challenge we face is that the youth don’t understand the influence that the Iriyah has on their lives and how important it is to vote. They take the good as “a given,” and the bad as something that they can’t change and that’s a mistake. Council members have the ability to facilitate change and to influence the lives of the residents. I recommend to everyone: Get to know the candidates, understand their worldviews, and vote. This is our home, this is our future!

Amiad Taub How many years have you lived in Modiin? We have lived in Modiin for the last 16 years. Family life My wife, Ruth, and I are the proud parents of Sharon, Idan, Ofek, Noa and Omer. Party affiliation Bayit HaYehudi Why do you want to be on city council? “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains, and is, immortal.” -Albert Pine The above slogan is hanging on my wall. I have always led public action on a voluntary basis – I believe that those who can change things in our world must lead the way. For this reason, my teammates and I are running for city council – to help lead Modiin into the future. I live my life based on the religious Zionist theory, alongside a management style, that will lead to results for the city’s residents. The group of “Fighters” will voluntarily act on behalf of the city’s residents. We will take responsibility for all areas related to our residents, from education to health and social services, absorption and pensioner needs. Our excellent relationship with the national government along with a personal relationship with both Minister Bennett,

Minister Shaked and Knesset members with whom I have advanced many laws this year will be an added value for the city. What are the city’s most important issues and how would you address them? There is still a gap in the needs of the orthodox and traditional families living in the city. My goal is to lead the strategic rethinking around the needs of our community. Our youth, especially our older youth deserve activities, suitable for their needs. They need places to meet that are well maintained, they need content, and they need suitable entertainment. They need to be heard. In my worldview, the infrastructure of the city only exists to serve the needs of the residents of our neighborhoods. Now is the time to refocus on the people and our community’s social needs, educational needs, welfare, senior citizens, health and special needs. A unique aspect of the Modiin community is the influx of those who have chosen to make Modiin their home, within our ancestral homeland. The needs of olim in Modiin include but go way beyond ulpan. Every day I am learning of new requirements of that population that need answering. The people are the reason that I wish to give my time and energy to represent them on city council. When Did You Last Visit Your Doctor? By: Tanya Cardash, M.D. When was the last time you paid a visit to your doctor – not because you witnessed some symptoms of an illness, but because you wanted to get a regular checkup? Screening and health checkups take precedence over anything else when it comes to healthcare and should not be neglected at any cost. “Health screening involves the use of tests, physical examinations and other procedures to detect disease or complications of a chronic condition early in people who look and feel well.” The primary reason why regular screening tests are highly recommended is early detection. Even if your body has not yet

caught on to your illness, a medical examination will detect early signs of the disease. Any disease including cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol or heart illness if caught in the preliminary stage, is easier to treat and control. It helps your doctor take the most non-invasive plan of action for your treatment. In most cases, early detection can avoid the need of risky interventions and complications. Maccabi has been a pioneer in the field of promoting health screening tests and in 2004 started measuring the uptake of health screening in the routine practice of their healthcare professionals. Currently, Maccabi has defined 20 health care measures that we direct our staff to encourage our members to perform. These measures are based on international guidelines and recommendations of the World Health Organization and allied committees. The measures are split into: 1. Preventative medicine – screening for breast cancer,

colon cancer, cervical cancer, anemia in infants (between the ages of 12-18 months) and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The aim is to enable treatment of these conditions while they are still in an early and curable phase. 2. Vaccinations – encouraging the uptake of the pneumococcal vaccination for those over the age of 65 and the annual influenza vaccination for children under the age of five, adults over the age of 65, pregnant women and those individuals suffering from a chronic disease. 3. Routine tests to evaluate the control of chronic conditions – along with the increased life-expectancy of the population, we are encountering a greater incidence of complications of chronic diseases which can negatively affect the quality of an individual’s life. Such conditions include diabetes, ischemic heart disease and hypertension. If we ensure tight control of the blood sugar, blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels we can significantly reduce secondary complications, such as blindness, kidney failure and recurrent heart attacks and strokes. Two other chronic conditions which have been included in the health care measures in recent years are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and osteoporosis. Alongside the health screening measures, the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating well, exercising, and avoiding harmful substances (alcohol, cigarettes and recreational

drugs) can significantly benefit your health. Regular physical activity and proper diet can also prevent or help you manage a wide range of health problems, including: diabetes, hypertension and depression and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. So please make sure you schedule a physical exam every year. Your family doctor will check your blood pressure and refer you to the necessary screening tests. This appointment can reveal a lot about your health. It’s important to follow up with your doctor and listen to any recommendations to improve your health. Dr. Tanya Cardash, made aliyah in 1999 from London, UK and has been a resident in Modiin from 2007. She currently works as a family doctor in Maccabi as well as holding the position of the Deputy Medical Director of Maccabi for the JerusalemShfela Region. One of her responsibilities is the management of the health screening program on the regional level.

Going to Therapy: A Hop of Faith By: Raphael Schondorf, M.Sc. You have just had it! You are tired of feeling stuck/frustrated/depleted, and you know that the time has come to seek outside, professional help. But you are in a quandary. You know that for therapy to be helpful, you need to be open and give the therapist a window into what is going on inside; because, in order for someone to really help, he needs to understand you. He needs to see not only your gifts and strengths, but also your vulnerabilities and insecurities. This is tough, and frankly, it’s risky. The more open you are, the more you expose yourself to potential criticism and one-upmanship. Sure, he will encourage you to be open, and he will reassure you that you can trust him. But how can you be sure? Perhaps you have trusted in

the past and been hurt as a result. Here is my advice to you: Do not just trust. When you initially meet with a therapist, pay attention to your feelings as you sit with him. Does he feel like a judgmental, critical person? Does he seem like a person you might feel comfortable opening up to? If you do not feel comfortable with him, there are two possible reasons. Either he is not the right fit for you, or alternatively, the prospect of the inner work you are about to do feels so threatening and scary that you would feel uneasy with any therapist. One way of testing this out is by taking a small risk and mentioning this discomfort to him. See how he reacts. If you are comfortable with his reaction, then give it a few sessions to determine if he is the right fit for you. Trust your feelings. If you do decide to give it a go with this therapist, then a helpful guiding principle in therapy is to take judicious risks. Expose yourself just slightly more than you are comfortable with and see how he reacts. Do you experience him as open and accepting or as judgmental and recriminatory? If you do experience negative feedback from him, bring it up with him. How does he react when you bring it up? In short, experiment. Take small to increasingly larger risks sharing yourself with him and see if he earns your trust. It is important to understand that the feelings of uncertainty and fear that come up around exposing yourself are not some kind of “psychological resistance” that needs to be circumvented. They are legitimate feelings that are in place in order to keep you feeling safe and respected. You deserve to be treated with compassion and respect. Allow the therapist to earn your trust instead of unnaturally and prematurely forcing yourself to trust him. Trust should not require a leap of faith, just a small hop. An Aliyah Story:

Aliyah with Its Highs and Lows and Everything in Between By: Daniella Tannenwald A journey into the unknown is always a daunting experience. Leaving a country with all its familiarities, requires courage and ambition. In my case, looking back nine years ago, I guess I was filled with both. But mostly, looking as far back as a young girl, making aliyah comes from a dream. I have always set myself high goals, reaching them with determination and with encouragement from my magnificent parents, family, friends and children. July 2009, in the heat of the Israeli summer, our arrival in Israel was another one of my dreams come true. At 41 this was my 37th time flying to Israel – only this time, to stay. Baruch, my husband (known to everyone as Uchi), is Israeli.

No surprise to family and friends when I told them I was marrying an Israeli. We met and married in South Africa (where I’m from). One of our first trips to Israel was spent with his family in Kiryat Arba. Sitting on their mirpeset, seeing the freedom of the young kids going out at night, alone, made me understand that my passion for Israel, my Zionist upbringing, and the flow of Judaism that runs through my veins, means that my dream to live in Israel needs to become my reality. Leaving friends, family and the luxuries of South Africa was a difficult decision, but the right one. South Africa was going through some difficult times and crime was on the rise. I guess if South Africa could have given my children what it gave me, I may not have left. But, for future opportunities and the freedom for my children, giving up our luxuries and leaving the beautiful country we called home, was the only realistic choice. Nine years later – Uchi and I look back with no regrets. Despite Continued on page 36

the many difficulties we have experienced, Israel is the place we now call home. When we first arrived, we went on the first of many family tiyulim through the Modiin Absorption Department. Uchi fell while holding our youngest child and broke his arm. This was our first introduction to the Israeli hospital system. Shortly after that, I developed swine flu. We both went through difficulties with job opportunities, eventually working long hours in jobs that we did not enjoy, but putting food on the table was our priority. Our efforts enabled us to host many other olim families for Shabbatot and chaggim in our home. For our first five years of aliyah we arranged “potluck” meals so that no family in our neighborhood went uninvited and no family felt alone.

Sadly, our efforts ended when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I went through surgery and radiation during the most auspicious of times – Tzuk Eitan. My summer was spent in Shaarei Tzedek and Tel Hashomer hospitals. It was a long summer for my family. I chose to keep my illness a secret – in this way I could continue working and doing the best I could in a situation where I was fighting my own private war, and Israel was fighting its own national war. Nevertheless, at the end of a difficult summer, I hosted a soldier “spa day.” This commemorated my healing, together with 19 soldiers who spent two months in Gaza protecting our country and our people. The Modiin community was outstanding and everyone who could, pulled together to ensure that our event was an enormous success. Therapists, restaurants and Modiin olim chadashim were phenomenal in their contributions. Continued on page 38

In 2017, I received the diagnosis that the breast cancer had returned. The entire year was spent in and out of Shaarei Tzedek – eight surgeries, four months of chemotherapy and two further reconstructive surgeries. I can honestly say that my recovery is with gratitude to Hashem, my parents, Uchi and my three beautiful daughters – together with some friends and clients who chose to travel with me on my journey and the new friends I made along the way. And very definitely, the amazing hospital and doctors. In and amongst the challenging times, Uchi and I can honestly say that we have had enormous successes. We are grateful for choosing Modiin as our home ground. I am blessed with my massage and reflexology private practice which has proven to be an enormous success, both with olim and the Israeli community. I am also thankful for the three amutot that I am a part of which has enabled me to integrate further into Israeli society. Our oldest daughter, Shiara (21), completed her bagrut and then army service. She is studying cosmetology in a college in Tel Aviv. She made magnificent friends and has met her tall, dark and handsome husband right here in the land of Israel. Baruch Hashem they married on September 2, 2018. Another parent’s dream come true. Our middle daughter, Shenhav (14), is studying at Midreshet Amit. She has flourished in personality, academically and socially.

Her passion is photography and she has just won the ESRA national photography competition. Our youngest daughter Shalhevet (11) is almost a bat mitzvah. Another simcha in our family. She is the force behind our power. She is determined, ambitious and very assertive, and very accomplished at her young age. Four years ago, another of my dreams fulfilled, my parents Max and Libby Strous made aliyah. They are living in Raanana and flourishing in health and friendships. Uchi and I acknowledge that our contribution to the Modiin community is vast. Uchi works for the amuta for the elderly of Modiin and he is also a driver for Kaviim bus lines. I provide a service of healing to the Modiin community and beyond. Over and above, I have a new line of salad dressings that will soon be available for purchase from various boutique stores. My gratitude is eternal too, to Caryn Meltz and Rachel Kops for their support during the time that I was ill, and for volunteering to give me the opportunity to use their magazine as a platform in which I have been able to get back on my feet and promote myself and my business. Memories of Our Grandparents By: Libby Tzipori In 1991, I left Israel in the middle of the Gulf War to join my family for my grandparents’ th 50 wedding a n n i v e r s a r y. I took my gas mask with me to the airport and with a heavy heart, got on the plane to England. During the celebrations, I sat with my grandma and told her how I felt about leaving Israel at this tumultuous time and how life carried on with our gas mask box attached to our shoulders. She replied, “Oh, it’s just like the blitz.” She went on to describe how the exact same gas-mask box – cardboard with a black plastic strap – accompanied her during her time in London, and after

40

being evacuated to the country with her newborn baby, my dad, in the 1940’s. It occurred to me then how very little I actually knew about my grandma and her life. She was my grandma – the woman who spoilt me rotten, took care of me, gave hugs and kisses and made the most amazing chicken soup. But I really didn’t know a lot about the woman who was so much a part of my life. It is only recently that I have come to really know who she was. During her lifetime, I learned snippets about where and how she grew up, her choices and who she was as a person. But suddenly after interviewing my dad and aunt, finding pictures of her childhood, teenage years, wedding, etc., I felt I really know who she was.

This was my journey to starting my photobiography business. If you ask yourself a few questions about your parents and grandparents and cannot answer them, then it is time to sit down with them and really get to know how they became who they are today. There are a million questions we can ask to get a true understanding of their lives but it is the pictures accompanying these stories that make for the perfect photobiography. When my children saw the photobook I produced of my parents’ lives, they asked why the photos were black and white, about the fashion, and the cars. They were amazed at seeing pictures of their great-grandparents’ weddings. Time is of the essence. Don’t leave it too late to really know who you come from. Nofim Gardens - Modiin That Modiin is a wonderful place to live is a given – testified by the fact of the thousands of veteran Israelis and olim who have been attracted to it over the past few decades. Its central location, pleasant and affordable housing, educational and commercial facilities, green open spaces and good transportation options all make for a lifestyle that is appealing. But there is good and there is better. The Nofim Garden Project, offered by the Tivuch Shelly agency, provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the best the community that Modiin has to offer within the framework of spacious, low-rise housing. Located in the Nofim neighborhood on a green hill on the western side of Modiin, Nofim Garden is strategically located near the Paatei Modiin Train Station and within easy access to commercial and leisure-time facilities. The neighborhood will ultimately include all of the amenities required for its inhabitants, including local shopping, schools and kindergartens, public buildings and parklands – all with a view toward the Anava Park. It also has connections to other areas of Modiin, as well as easy access to Route 431 connecting Modiin to highways 6 and 1. Nofim Garden consists of three buildings, offering an open lifestyle to those who love nature and want to avoid living in a concentrated high-rise. There are 24 units in total, eight in each building, encompassing six-room cottages with expansive gardens and five-room duplexes with balconies. Construction work has begun and will be completed within two years. Of course, everyone looking into a major home investment wants to know the quality of the people he/she is dealing with. In this project, the people guiding the project are those with solid credentials of integrity and reliability.

Tivuch Shelly, headed by Shelly Levine, is leading the sales effort. Shelly is a veteran olah from the US who has sold hundreds of housing units in Israel over the past 33 years, focusing on Jerusalem, Ma’ale Adumim, Beit Shemesh, Modiin and Tel Aviv. She understands what people want in their homes, and makes sure, together with the developer, that they get it.

Shelly works with the client from first contact to completion, including personal assistance in securing mortgages on the best possible terms. Shelly works only with developers with established reputations for excellence. In the case of Nofim Garden she partners with Bonei Habirah, a firm that specializes in “boutique” buildings that employs top experts in every phase of construction, from planning to “finishing.” Bonei Habirah maintains close ties with the buyer from start to finish, adhering to a high level of building specifications and striving to do the job with an emphasis on complete customer satisfaction. Currently, Bonei Habirah is building 10 buildings in various parts of the country. For further information about Nofim Garden, contact the sales office at 02-5662499 or email shellylevine2000@yahoo.com; website: www.tivuchshelly.com

Makloubeh with Chicken, Dried Fruit and Silan

Courtesy of Catering Chef at Maccabis – Tastes from Home Makloubeh is a dish of layers of rice combined with meat and vegetables that are flipped upside down onto a plate before serving. The source of the word Makloubeh is Arabic and means “upside down.” This traditional dish is usually made with chicken or lamb meat, with a choice of vegetables – cauliflower, onion, tomatoes, eggplant and/or potatoes. The version I chose here is more festive and sweet, with dried fruits instead of vegetables. The fruit and meat are placed at the bottom of the pot, with slow cooking, allowing the rice to absorb the variety of flavors that are underneath. Before serving, the pot is turned over onto a serving dish and looks like a high “cake” of rice, over which meat and vegetables are caramelized. On Sukkot, many people decorate their succah with the seven species, like it says in the passuk:

‫ עיינות ותהומות יוצאים‬,‫ ארץ נחלי מים‬,‫"כי ה' אלוהיך מביאך אל ארץ טובה‬ "‫ ארץ זית שמן ודבש‬,‫ ארץ חיטה ושעורה וגפן ותאנה ורימון‬,‫בבקעה ובהר‬ .)'‫ח‬-‫ ז‬,'‫(דברים ח‬

This festive dish, which is an edible decoration for the sukka, is suitable for any fine meal. Ingredients · 12 chicken legs · 4 onions sliced into thin strips · 1/3 cup olive oil · 1 tsp paprika · 1 cup water · 100 g raisins · 100 g pitted plums · 100 g apricots · 4 Tbsp silan · 1 stick of cinnamon · ¼ tsp ground cloves · 2 Tbsp brown sugar Rice: · 1 tsp salt · 3 cups rice · 4 ½ cups vegetable broth or water Directions Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Rinse and soak the rice in a bowl of water. Rinse and dry the chicken legs. Transfer to a bowl and add paprika and 2 Tbsp of silan. Mix until the chicken is coated, place in a baking pan lined with

foil and grill in the oven for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, heat oil in a large pot and fry the onions until golden. Take the chicken out of the oven and add to the pot with the dried fruits, spices and water (no salt) and cook an additional 20 minutes on low flame until liquid reduces to about half. Choose a wide low pot, cut a circle from parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pot and arrange the chicken legs in the shape of the sun with the fruits and onions in between. The parchment paper will help you remove the dish from the pot after it cooks. Strain the rice from the water and add the salt. Mix and place the rice on top of the chicken and squash it down. Make sure to completely cover all the chicken with the rice. Gently pour the broth over the rice and make sure that the rice is still completely covering all the chicken. Cover the pot and cook on a low flame for around 25 minutes. To serve: take a dish or plate that is larger than the pot and put it on top of the pot. Carefully with a towel on the pot handles and plate, turn the dish over onto the plate. Variation: For a strong orange shade it is recommended to spice the rice with a little turmeric or paprika. Your guests will love it. Chag Sameach!
