Dear Readers

Community. We throw this word around a lot and it means different things to different people, but ultimately we’re all striving towards the same goal – to be part of a community. On a personal level we become a part of our neighborhood, school/gan, or shul communities. This is where our friendships, for the most part, are forged. But… there’s a greater purpose. In the interview we conducted with Rav Elazar Grunberger of Lev Modiin (page 19), he discusses the need to create an impact on the community in a substantial way. We can make a difference by looking outside our own lives and seeing how we can make an impact on our community, our city and ultimately on our country. All of this can only be accomplished if we work together regardless of religious backgrounds, political views and so on. In our interview with Councilman Shahar Mey-On (page 8), he talks about how his voting in city council is propelled by making the right choice for each specific case for the betterment of the residents as a whole. We need a starting point and we need to work together. Joanna Maissel’s initiative for the Modiin Clothes Swap (page 34) started from the “want” of helping a family in need. Coupled with being environmentally friendly, the idea of “recycling” clothes for charity came to life. As we enter the spring season, Dina Solomon (page 44) gives tips on how to start rejuvenating our bodies and souls. Once we have renewed ourselves, we can then turn our energies towards helping our communities – on the small intimate level or even on a national level. Wishing everyone a Chag Kasher VeSameach! Tell Your Children on that Day By: Rav Gideon Weitzman When Pharaoh first attempted to annihilate the Jewish people, he attacked the children, the newborns, and the boys. This would appear to be since they were vulnerable and weak. However, as he continued his campaign to destroy the new nation, he declared to Moshe that he need not take the children along to the planned service of God outside of Egypt. “Do not take your children with for it is dangerous” (Shemot 11:10). But Moshe insisted, “We will go with our children and our elders, with our sons and with our daughters.” Pharaoh, like many of our subsequent enemies, wanted to attack the Jewish family, feeling that this is the Jewish people’s strongest asset. Destroy the family and you have effectively erased the entire people. He prevented the people from procreating, he weakened the men with oppressive work so that they had no desire to be

with their wives. Pharaoh launched an all-out attack on the Jewish family. And so it is with the Jewish family that we fight back, with the one festival that is so deeply connected with the home and with the family. Indeed, the commandment of the Seder night is for parents to tell their children the story of the exodus and the formation of the Jewish nation. It is a night where we often sit in multi-generational gatherings and listen to the previous generation’s history. We invite the four sons who may rebel and not follow the exact ways of the parents but they do all show up. It is a night when parents and family concentrate on passing on the tradition to the next generation. And the way we do this is by asking questions. The Mishna (Pesachim 10:4) tells us, “and here

the son asks.” In fact, the four questions are only the default if the son has no good questions or cannot ask. The four questions are the minimal queries that should be posed, but they are by no means an exhaustive or comprehensive list. On the contrary, we should encourage our children to ask, to investigate, and to enquire. And this is part of our tradition, one of the most important ways to create family discussions and to connect the next in line with those values that we believe in. So how can we get our children to ask? There are a few very important things that parents can do. First, let them be inquisitive. There is no such thing as a bad question. Our children can be encouraged to ask anything and not be judged for any question that they may have. Second, validate their question by discussing it. Nothing is worse than having the courage to actually ask and then have your question ignored. We have often stopped our Seder before the Ma Nishtana section and gone around the table allowing and encouraging each person to ask a question. Whatever bothers them, regardless of whether it is connected to the Seder or Pesach or not. We have heard some fascinating and deep questions. But each question must be related to and not ignored. I remember occasions when a participant in the Seder said at the end, “but you didn’t answer my question.” Third, give good answers but learn to live with the reality that sometimes there is no good answer. While discussing their questions we need to try to find good and valid answers. But it is sometimes essential to teach how to live with doubt and to show them that we do not have all the answers either. The most important part is for us to be askers and not only answerers, for us to continue seeking and thinking and looking and investigating. To keep asking questions and not to take things for granted. Then asking becomes a bonding experience, one that connects us with the next generation, one that creates families, and that is our biggest strength and our ultimate weapon against all of our enemies. Have a wonderful Pesach. Rav Gideon Weitzman is the rav of the Merkaz Modiin Synagogue (sometimes called the Bunker) and is the Director of the English Speaking Section of the Puah Institute for Fertility and Medicine in Accordance with Halacha. He is also a Visiting Associate Principal at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and writes a popular weekly column in the Torah Tidbits. Meet Councilman Shahar Mey-On A Voice for Everyone By: Caryn Meltz & Rachel Kops Shahar Mey-On and his family moved to Modiin Maccabim Reut in 1996 and were thereby one of the first families to live here. Although Mey-On’s day job is a Distributor Account Manager for Lenovo, he started to volunteer his time when the second of his children was born in 2000 with special needs. Given that Modiin was a new city, there weren’t any facilities for special needs children and he had to send his son to ganim and schools outside of the city. Mey-On was instrumental in bringing AKIM Israel to Modiin with two mothers in 2002 – AKIM is an organization that gives support to individuals with intellectual disabilities of all ages. There are now more than 100 families involved with AKIM Modiin and they have a presence in the Sachlavim building. Mey-On is a big believer in inclusion and integrating special needs children into the community. He was integral in instituting after-school programs for special needs children in Modiin, such as Knafaim shel Krembo (a youth movement for special needs children), judo and Shevet Yuval in Bnei Akiva (the special needs group). One summer the special needs classes were going to have

their day cut short by one hour so Mey-One took the matter to the high court and won the case – the hour was given back. “Why should the day of special needs children look any different than the other children’s?” said Mey-On. Mey-On, with help from good people along the way, has built an infrastructure for mentally and physically challenged children in the city. This includes preschools, after-school programing, Psifas – the special needs school that opened this year with 12 classrooms – and summer camps. He has also been involved with creating accessibility in the city’s parks. His next project is an awareness campaign in schools and throughout the city about the problem of violence, especially against children with special needs which is 10 times Continued on page 10

worse than the regular population – a fact that most people are unaware of. Mey-On’s introduction to the political sphere began with meeting Yair Lapid before he ran for Knesset. After Lapid formed the Yesh Atid party, he asked Mey-On to run on the ticket in the local elections. Yesh Atid has a strong base in Modiin with mainstream candidates to appeal to different segments of the population. MeyOn agreed to enter politics in order to benefit the city and the country. When Mey-On was elected to city council – in a volunteer position – he had to give up his title in AKIM because it was a conflict of interest, although he remains involved with the organization. He holds the small business portfolio, as well as the advancement of children portfolio and sits on the advancement of women committee. He doesn’t vote on city council according to self-interest but rather looks at the big picture and votes according to the city’s needs. The small business portfolio keeps him busy, with more than

1,500 small businesses operating out of homes in the city plus 18 commercial centers. Small businesses approach him about issues at the commercial centers from the small issues such as cutting down trees blocking store signs, adding benches along the paths to centers, as well as adding signage directing traffic to the centers. Mey-On also instituted that businesses would not have to pay a tax on having the rollup signs outside their stores – which again, most people don’t even know businesses used to be taxed on. He also started the annual small business fair to provide exposure for small and independent businesses in the city. It is important for everyone to feel comfortable in our city. As a result, Mey-On has taken on to make it a law that businesses have the option of being open 24/7 so that those, for example, who would like to go out to a café on a Saturday have the capability to do so without having to leave the city. “I didn’t enter politics to have ‘my name on a chair,’” said Mey-On, “I became a council member so that I could represent the residents of our city and the reward is knowing that I’m able to help others.” Mey-On can be reached at 052-697-6442.

An Aliyah Story:

Joey and Sari Shabot From Aleppo, Syria to Modiin, Israel By: Rachel Kops and Caryn Meltz Joey and Sari Shabot both have roots in Syria. Joey was born in Aleppo and fled with his family when he was two years old. For Syrian Jews, there was no single catastrophic event that led to mass emigration like from many other Middle Eastern countries. The emigration from Syria was a slow trickle over many decades. Joey’s family fled Syria through Lebanon and then to Paris using two sets of fake documents that they hired a forger to make for them. Joey’s mother worried throughout their exit that the children’s accent would give them away because although they spoke Arabic, Jews were known to say certain words with a distinct accent. They were among the first of their extended family to leave Syria, and they initially settled in Israel. They started as refugees in an absorption center in Yavne and then moved to Bat Yam where they learned Hebrew. Joey’s father, a rabbi in Syria,

became a bookkeeper for the Israel Electric Company and his mother worked as a bank teller at a Bank Hapoalim branch in Tel Aviv. They were never truly comfortable in Israel and left after six years to join the rest of their extended families, who in the intervening years had left Syria and immigrated to Brooklyn, New York. They started over again, learning yet another new language and finding work. Joey’s two older brothers were old enough to start working, while Joey entered third grade. Joey was a good student and applied to Harvard after seeing the brochure in the college counselor’s office at his high school. His parents, who were new to the concept of Ivy League, didn’t understand the need to attend, but nonetheless were supportive when they found out that at least there would be kosher food. Joey decided to study Arabic Continued on page 14

language and comparative literature– while they always spoke Arabic in the house, Joey had never learned to read and write Arabic and he wanted to learn more about his heritage. After Harvard, Joey returned to New York and began working at a hedge fund. During this time, Joey’s sister-in-law fixed him up with Sari, a neighbor who also came from a Syrian background. Her family left Syria a couple of generations earlier and after spending time in Egypt ended up in the Brooklyn community. Joey and Sari met and got married within seven months, and then moved to Philadelphia where Joey started law school at Penn, and Sari worked as a

pediatric echocardiographer at CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia). After law school, they moved back to Brooklyn and Joey started working at a major New York law firm, Wachtell Lipton, specializing in mergers and acquisitions. After several years, when Joey was asked to work on a deal involving an Israeli company he said, “It opened my eyes to the advanced economy and business ecosystem in Israel.” The family spent the summer vacation of 2010 in Israel. After they returned home, Joey requested from Wachtell Lipton the opportunity to work overseas for a year as a visiting attorney in a foreign law firm. Wachtell was supportive of a learning experience and held Joey’s position for the year he was to be away. Sari was due with their fourth child in July, so they set off for Israel in August for a 12-month adventure. Sari had wanted to live in Jerusalem but

given that Joey’s job was in Tel Aviv it didn’t make sense, so they opted to move to Modiin. The couple, knowing that people have hardships in moving to Israel, feel very lucky when they say that “everything fell into place”. Joey had employment, and quickly found a house to rent in Modiin while renting out their home in Brooklyn. Sari said, “It was so sudden, finding a job in May, renting out the house and finding a furnished apartment. Things fell into place at the right time, as if Hashem swooped in and gently placed us here.” They came to Modiin not having any expectations other than “it being a city with roads, houses and a train,” said Joey, but “it turned out to be the perfect fit for our family.” They were especially impressed by the warmth of the community. The day after signing up to receive emails from the local shul, a neighbor showed up at their door with a welcome basket, a big smile, and survival tips. Towards the end of their year, they had to decide on a return date to buy their plane tickets back to New York, but they kept putting it off. One day in spring, Sari’s uncle had cut out an article from The Jerusalem Post about a major international law firm, Greenberg Traurig LLP (GT), that was planning to open a branch office in Israel. Joey immediately observed that this was a unique opportunity, as no major firm had an office here and he admired the entrepreneurial and unapologetically Zionist spirit of GT.

He sent his resume cold, and received an offer in a matter of days. That made the decision for them – Joey had the chance to build up a unique cross-border legal practice for one of the world’s largest law firms, so they were staying. The Tel Aviv branch of Greenberg Traurig started out with just three lawyers and is now a fully functioning office with eight lawyers and a platform of 2,000 attorneys in 38 offices all around the world, many of whom frequently work with Israeli companies. Joey has his license to practice foreign law in Israel. Joey’s corporate practice is booming, as Israeli companies continue to engage in ever more complex transactions abroad, requiring a range of subject matter expertise and local counsel abroad. Joey was recently named one of the “Top 40 Under 40” professionals in Israel by The Marker, among other recognitions. Joey’s parents initially couldn’t understand why their kids would want to live in Israel given their own difficult experience, however, that was a different Israel and the next generation was better prepared to withstand the rigors of aliyah. When Joey made aliyah the first time, the family was embarrassed for people to hear them speak Arabic – coming back years later with an American education under their belts was a “new” aliyah. In addition to their four oleh children, the couple also has two sabras. Joey Shabot can be reached at Greenberg Traurig at 03-636-6000.

From My Kitchen to Yours By: Caryn Meltz & Rachel Kops

Hamitbahon shel Sima (Sima’s Kitchen) has become a household name in Modiin Maccabim Reut. In 2000, Sima Hadad, moved to Modiin with her four children – then aged three, five, twelve and thirteen. Sima had recently divorced and was looking for a fresh start. She had previously owned a small restaurant in Lod and after a two-year break, decided to open in Modiin. She started off in the Sharbat Center, and due to the size of the city had hours from 8am to 4pm as there had been no reason to stay open later. Her business took off and she needed a larger space so she moved to the recently opened Kaiser Center in 2009. Part of the growth of the business included providing meals to institutions

and hi-tech companies. Sima has also been operating the cafeteria at the Kravitz offices in Ligad for 13 years. Having grown up in a Moroccan household with a mother who loved to cook, Sima inherited her passion for cooking and baking. Her love for cooking stemmed from her desire to make people happy. When her mother was away, as the oldest daughter of four siblings, she was in charge of the meals in the house and so began her “career”. Sima’s mother concocted her own dishes and Sima learned how to cook that way as well - inspired by what combination of tastes complement each other. Every dish on Sima’s menu is her own creation. She cooks all the food with food prep help from her staff. Sima’s day begins at 6am on Sundays through Thursdays and at 4am on Fridays. She arrives at the restaurant and has two hours to herself before her staff arrives. “The time alone in the morning is my therapy and it gives me my strength for the day. Cooking is my passion and I wake up every morning pleased that I am able to cook for others and make their day easier.” Sima has the schedule down to a science. Sundays are the quietest day of the week due to people’s post-Shabbat “diets” and Shabbat leftovers. Mondays start to pick up and obviously on Thursdays and Fridays the kitchen is at full-speed. We asked what we would find on her table on Friday night, and she responded, “I’m eating what all my clients are eating – my food, of course.” Her children and grandchildren join her every other Shabbat so that the other Shabbatot are devoted either to down time, entertaining friends or traveling. Although she doesn’t bake at the restaurant, she does bake a lot at home with her grandchildren. Sima is modest about her food donations to people in need. She has been working with two women in the city’s welfare department for years and gives food on a regular basis. In addition, there are two families in need that come every Friday and she loads them up with Shabbat food on her heshbon. Building a business is never easy, but as Sima said, “When you believe in yourself, anything can happen. Even when it’s hard, hold onto the determination and never give up.” A happy customer said, “I’ve known Sima for 15 years and she’s an eshet chayil.” Hamitbahon shel Sima is located in Kaiser Center, 24 Emek Zevulun, 08-926-5368, www.hamitbahon-sima.co.il.

A Heart in Modiin Lev Modiin By: Rachel Kops and Caryn Meltz

Rabbi Elazar Grunberger’s experience over the years is what inspired him to start Lev Modiin in our city. Growing up traditional–conservative in El Paso, Texas provided him with a strong basis of tradition. He had a knack for DJing and received his first break on air working in professional top 40 radio at the age of 17. A trip to Israel shortly after put him on his path to questioning the “why’s” of Judaism and not just knowing the “how’s” – which he was already accustomed to doing. He went on a post high school program sponsored by the American Zionist Youth Foundation. During that year he became acquainted with Aish HaTorah and after completing the program enrolled in Aish thereby extending his stay in Israel. He met his wife, Bracha during this time. After years of learning, he received several Rabbinic Ordinations and was engaged in outreach projects while in Kollel. In 1984 Rav Noach Weinberg asked him to go to St. Louis and run the Aish branch there which he agreed to for a two-year shlichut. After 27 years and raising their 10 children in St. Louis, they returned and found their way to Modiin.

It's Not Faith In The Markets. It's Faith In People. I'll Sell Your Property Quickly.

Upon returning to Israel, Rav Grunberger and his wife decided to move to Modiin due to the large Anglo population. All he knew was that Modiin was a predominantly secular city near Jerusalem – a beautiful, young and clean city with parks on every corner. After developing and running outreach programs in St. Louis, he decided to open up a program for Anglos in order to enrich and enhance the lives of the residents of the city. Why Anglos? Because as a starting point he wanted to begin with the language he felt more comfortable in. “Lev Modiin provides a fresh perspective on what religion is all about,” says Rav Grunberger, Continued on page 20

“We have rich values, and I’m not even talking about the religious side. Our society can’t function without the values and our heritage which belong to everyone and should be accessible to all. It is our birthright.” The program began in 2012 with a series of lectures. This wasn’t an easy feat since it is a challenge to get people out of their homes and away from their electronics. A Carlebach Friday night davening started which led to Shabbat morning services. After many requests, they began High Holiday services in 2013. Lev Modiin also has holiday programs for Chanukah and Purim as well as a children’s program on Shabbat. The youth programs are very successful.

The next step was opening the Beit Medrash program to create a great learning environment and promote achdut (unity) by welcoming Jews from all backgrounds and religious orientations. Thirteen men were hand-picked to come from Kiryat Sefer to learn in the Beit Medrash. The criteria were to be good role models, have a love of Israel, love Jews from all backgrounds, and be open-minded and non-judgmental. The program runs Sunday through Thursday and to date around 70 men come to learn throughout the week. A women’s chavruta learning program also takes place – English-speaking women from Kiryat Sefer are paired to learn with women in their Modiin homes.

Rabbi Grunberger says that the goal of Lev Modiin is “to create an impact on the community in a substantial way through quality educational programs and Torah learning opportunities.” In addition to the above-mentioned programming, Rav Grunberger is spearheading a new initiative called Chochmat Chaim (Wisdom for Life). The program was developed by Rabbi Grunberger to enrich the quality of life for individuals and families with Jewish culture and heritage. The program offers three sessions on five universal topics (wisdom in marriage, parenting, love, happiness and success) which everyone can benefit from and relate to. Each session involves discussing the topic with a partner, in an effort to be actively learning and engaging. There are source sheets and questions to provide direction and materials to be discussed. They are also working on a program for teens that covers topics such as friendship, loyalty and building self-esteem. Rabbi Grunberger is motivated by a sense of responsibility for Klal Yisrael, “Kol Yisrael areivim ze l’ze,” All Israel is responsible for one another. He says, “We each have our own individual missions in life but we can’t forget that we are all part of one Jewish community.” In an effort to reach more people, Rabbi Grunberger started Lev Echad, an umbrella organization for the Lev outreach network. Lev Modiin serves as the model city with its goal to replicate the programming in other cities and communities across the world.

The program in Modiin continues to enhance the community through the general programs for the community-at-large and the shul through Kehillat Lev Modiin. Very few shuls in Israel have a rabbi, which is something missing in Israeli society. Lev Modiin fills this gap by having Rabbi Grunberger available in their lives to provide guidance. Lev Modiin sponsors many outreach programs for the general community but the development of Kehillat Lev Modiin has provided a special place for families, particularly individuals and families with strong backgrounds looking for a warm family-oriented shul with solid Torah learning and inspiring services on Shabbat and Yamim Tovim. All of Lev Modiin’s activities are supported by private donors through fundraising. For more information about Lev Modiin, visit their website at www.levmodiin.com or email office@levmodiin.com or rabbigrunberger@levmodiin.com.

The Mouth-Body Connection How a visit to an appropriately trained dentist may save your life By: Dr. Tamar Adahan

Did you know that having the wrong bacteria lodged in your dental plaque can put you at higher risk for heart attack and stroke than smoking? It has also been shown to be associated with dementia, bowel disease and depression to name a few.

Oral health is essential to general health and well-being at every stage of life. A healthy mouth enables not only nutrition of the physical body, but also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem and feelings of well-being. The mouth serves as a “window” to the rest of the body, providing signals of general health disorders. For example, aphthous ulcers are occasionally a manifestation of Coeliac disease or Crohn’s disease, pale and bleeding gums can be a marker for blood disorders, bone loss in the lower jaw can be an early indicator of skeletal osteoporosis. Gum disease has been associated with a number of systemic conditions and it is clear that major chronic diseases – namely

cancer and heart disease – share common risk factors with oral disease. Recognition that oral health and general health are interlinked is essential for determining appropriate oral health care programs. Traditionally, oral health promotion has focused uniquely on the care of the teeth and gums, in isolation from other health programs. Modern up-to-date dentists apply a more holistic approach to health promotion and target risk factors common to many chronic conditions in order to achieve improvements in a range of chronic health conditions more effectively and efficiently. Recently, scientific literature has been linking intra-oral bacteria to a number of life threatening diseases, including cardiovascular

disease, stroke, preterm birth, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. Tooth brushing can reduce, control and/or maintain a better intra-oral bacterial environment, potentially improving self-induced, chronic disease states, such as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease accounts for inordinate intra-oral bacterial activity and has found itself intimately involved with the above disease states in many organs of the body. In recent years, it has been solidly scientifically substantiated that the bacteria in your mouth can cause or contribute to general health problems involving the heart, the kidneys, liver, pregnancies and respiratory disorders. The implications are that improved oral hygiene, can improve chronic health issues. Regular twice-a-year checkups with an appropriately skilled dentist could mean a unique opportunity for early detection plus initiation of possibly lifesaving intervention of up to 120 medical conditions, many of them lifethreatening. These include thyroid problems, high blood pressure, sleep and breathing disorders, HIV, tuberculosis and kidney disease. Let’s look at a few of the connections between oral health and overall health. People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease than people without diabetes. Researchers think this is because diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection. Oral health problems in turn may affect a person’s ability to control his or her blood sugar. During pregnancy, hormonal changes may result in tender swollen and bleeding gums called pregnancy gingivitis. Research

indicates that there may be a connection between gum disease and preterm delivery and low birth weight of the baby. Studies have shown that treating gum disease may reduce the risk of these pregnancy complications. Preventive dental care is safe during most of pregnancy and it can improve the overall health of the mother and baby. Although a visit to your dentist is not a substitute for a visit to a medical doctor you should provide your dentist with a complete medical history and tell him or her about any recent health developments even if they don’t seem related to your oral health. Remember to brush and floss regularly and build a good relationship with your dentist so that you and your dentist can work together to improve your dental health and your overall health and keep you smiling. How to Choose the Right Therapist By: Tanya Proc hko Despite the prevalent stigma associated with seeking mental health services, many agree that therapy can be a highly effective way of helping us cope with challenging situations as well as providing us with the skills and tools needed in order to facilitate change in our lives. The most common way of finding a therapist is through a referral. While this can work just fine, many people rely heavily on the one making the referral and don’t take the time themselves to look into the therapist. Going to a “top therapist” does not mean you’re going to the “right therapist” for you. Unfortunately, when therapy is unsuccessful, it may lead to feelings of hopelessness about therapy altogether, leaving the client suffering without proper treatment. The purpose of this article is to help increase the chances of successful therapy by giving you five key

considerations when selecting a therapist. 1. You will notice that there are many different types of therapists, with varying degrees and training. Before choosing therapy with any professional, ask for a phone consultation, where you can inquire about his/her therapeutic approach. This is your opportunity to learn all about this therapist so don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as needed. Does the therapist’s approach make sense to you? A specific approach may be selected either because it makes the most sense to the client or because it’s the most effective mode of treating a particular issue. 2. During your phone consultation and during the first session, notice whether you feel safe with the therapist. What does it mean to feel “safe”? Safety in therapy refers to the feeling of trust in the professional, the feeling of not being judged but

rather accepted unconditionally as you are. I use the word “feeling” because it is very much dependent on your own intuition. It is upon this trust that a solid therapeutic relationship is built, and only with this feeling of safety and trust can therapy be successful. If you’re coming into therapy knowing that you have difficulty trusting in general, then be mindful of where these feelings of distrust are coming from. 3. What are the therapist’s qualifications? Don’t forget to ask about his/her training, years in practice, and other relevant questions related to his/her competence in treating clients with a similar issue(s) as yours. There are also many excellent therapists who are new to the field, and there are advantages and disadvantages to consider when choosing between a seasoned therapist and a newer one. For example, the cost of therapy may be lower with a less experienced therapist but you may be compromising on some additional experience. After weighing the advantages vs. disadvantages, make the choice based on what best suits your needs. 4. Don’t overlook other criteria that may seem less important than the therapist’s qualifications. For example, a therapist with a religious affiliation similar to yours might be something that’s important to you. You may prefer distance therapy over face-to-face because your circumstances make leaving your home very challenging. While professional qualifications are important, you should not ignore other criteria when making your choice. I referred a client to an excellent therapist and later learned that the therapy was unsuccessful because this client couldn’t get passed the age difference, as the therapist was significantly younger than this client. Despite the therapist’s top credentials and years of experience, the age gap stood in the way of successful therapy. 5. Keep your expectations in check. Coming into therapy with the expectation that the therapist will give you the magic answers to get through your challenges will only set you up to be disappointed. A good therapist won’t promise you a magical quick fix without any work from you. If a therapist has somehow given you this message during your initial consultation, then you are being misled. Success in therapy is as much (if not more) dependent on the work of the client as it is on the guidance of the therapist. It is a team effort and can only be successful if the client does his/her part of the work, no matter how amazing of a therapist you’ve found! RED FLAGS: There are many “therapists” out there who don’t have proper credentials to be therapists. They present themselves as such, have professional websites, and practice under the guise of a “therapist”. It is unethical for them to lead you to believe that they’re qualified to practice as a therapist, and it may even harm you

in the long run. I encourage you to ask to see their qualifications if you’re unsure. The red flag can also apply to trained therapists who take on cases that they are unqualified to treat. The important thing to remember is if you’re unsure, don’t be afraid to ASK. The therapist is the expert in their field, but you’re the expert on your life; trust that YOU can make a well-informed decision in choosing the right person to help you successfully achieve your goal(s). Insight into Eyesight:

Ensuring Your Vision for a Better Future By: Miriam Album, OPTICS MIRIAM The old adage says that you don’t appreciate something until it is gone. When it comes to good eyesight, this is very much the case. By taking regular care of your eyes you can really contribute to your quality of life. In the short term it can be through enjoying “higher resolution” vision, preventing headaches or safer driving. In the long term it can help with more serious declines in vision or by detecting other health conditions early on and thereby preventing serious issues. In my examinations, I don’t just determine your prescription for glasses or contact lenses, I also check your eyes for prevalent eye diseases, examine how your eyes work together and assess your eyes as a guide to your overall health. Do You Need to Have Your Eyes Examined? Eye examinations are a very important part of general health

maintenance for everyone. Adults should have their eyes tested at least once every two years to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of disease. As previously mentioned, as we get older our vison naturally deteriorates so it is important to catch this early. Vision tests for children are also very important and are required about once a year. They help to ensure normal visual development and confirm that children have the visual acuity and vision skills required for school work and other activities. Children will often not complain about vision problems because they are not always aware of what “normal” vision looks like. If your child is struggling at school, have their eyes checked – it may simply be due to an undetected learning-related vision problem. What Should the Optometrist Check? The optometrist should check the health of the eyes for eye diseases and general health problems, as well as for a prescription. The following and more will be assessed: The prescription: long-sightedness, short-sightedness, and astigmatism – these can be corrected if necessary with glasses or contact lenses; Detection of Lazy Eye (amblyopia); Performance of the eyes working together; Eye diseases: Optometrists who test the health of the eye can detect early signs of some diseases by looking at the retina and cornea. These conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and more; Cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD); Near vision problems due to the natural age-related decline in the focusing ability of the eye (presbyopia). Today, glasses can contribute not only to your vision, but also to your image and self-confidence as well as often being a fashion statement, so a visit to the optometrist can have both physical and emotional benefits! I recommend taking a proactive approach to preserving healthy vison. Test your eyes regularly so that you can see more clearly, learn more efficiently and preserve your vision for life. Miriam Album is an experienced UK qualified optometrist offering personal and professional eye care from her clinic, OPTICS MIRIAM, in Buchman, 054-566-5283, https://www.facebook.com/OpticsMiriam.

Five Steps to a Healthier Spine… Right Now By: Lisa Silverstein We’re all probably familiar with the parody illustration of the progression of human evolution. It begins with the silhouette image of a primate, hunched over, knuckles to the ground, and jaw thrusted forward. The drawing then depicts the images of man, over the course of millions of years, as he becomes more and more bipedal and upright. The progression ultimately ends with the image of modern man, hunched once again, only this time over a computer or smart phone. Now more than ever, we seem to be faced with greater challenges to sustain a healthy back and spine and maintain good posture. The hours spent daily pouring over a computer screen or handheld device are wreaking havoc on our bodies. It isn’t merely a cosmetic issue either. Sure, standing with a slouched spine, rounded shoulders, and a protruding chin isn’t the most flattering pose one can strike. However, more pressing, are the internal repercussions of how we have begun to carry ourselves. Headaches as well as pain in the back, neck, shoulders, hips and pelvis are all too often the result of poor sitting and standing posture. Furthermore, as we age and our flexibility tends to decline, our bodies get fixed into these rounded postures, making it difficult, if not impossible, to completely straighten out. We also habitually maintain this poor positioning while we exercise. Bikers and runners, for example, are often performing with their shoulders tensely lifted, backs rounded, and heads hanging low. The problem is even more pronounced in the adolescent population. Pre-teens and teens seem to spend a typical day alternating from one grossly misaligned position to the next: leaning forward and often to one side while lugging around oversized backpacks, slouching while writing at their desks, and hanging their heavy heads over a handheld screen. This population is at particular risk as their spines are still continuing to grow and change. 30

While seriously correcting one’s posture can take some time, here are a few quick fix tips to achieve a healthier spine right now: 1. Bring It Up to Your Face: Whether it’s a smart phone, a paperback book, or this magazine, bringing whatever you’re reading up to the level of your head and face (instead of hanging your head down to the level of what you’re reading) can seriously help align your upper back and neck, and minimize shoulder and neck discomfort. 2. Keep Your Shoulders Down: Always try to maintain relaxed, low shoulders. When we lift our shoulders up towards our ears, it not only causes us to hunch over, it also creates tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. So keep the shoulders loose, soft and low. 3. Push Your Chin Back: Very often, without being aware, we slide the chin forward, creating a rounded hump in the upper back. Here’s the quick fix: take two fingers and manually push your chin back so that your ears are tracked right above your shoulders. Ideally, when you are standing up straight, your ears, shoulders, and ankles should all be aligned. 4. Engage Your Core: Maintaining perfect posture can be exhausting! Strengthening the abdominal muscles is a critical piece of the puzzle. The stronger your core, the easier it is stand up and sit up straight. 5. Be Mindful of Your Posture: Sounds simple enough, right? But usually our biggest issue with standing up straight is simply forgetting to stand up straight! It probably won’t feel natural at first, although it can be if you work at it. By merely being more aware of how you carry your body, you can begin to more effectively lengthen your spine and straighten out. Lisa Silverstein is a US Registered Nurse, health instructor, and a Wingate Certified Pilates instructor.

Time to Part

Dissolution of Partnership between a Couple By: Adv. Hagit Halevy The term dissolution of partnership is usually known in context of business partnerships but, in fact, it is relevant to procedures of divorce, in cases where a couple doesn’t agree about the division of the common apartment. To do that, one can file a claim of “dissolution of partnership”. When does one file such a claim? What should you know about the procedure of dissolution between a couple? Dissolution of partnership, in practice Usually, the most expensive asset the couple has is their home. In most cases, the couple resides in the same apartment. When divorcing, one partner usually prefers to stay in the apartment and the other usually prefers to sell it, due, in many cases, to the financial burden caused by the divorce and the need to find alternative housing. What does the law say in a case where the couple’s home is registered in both their names but one of them refuses to sell? In such a case the partner who wants to sell might find himself in a difficult situation. There is no legal possibility of selling just

part of the home if there is a person residing in it. In such a case, the solution could be a claim for dissolution of partnership. This claim will oblige the spouse to sell the home. The real estate law states that a person who owns real estate in partnership, can at any time, request to dissolve the partnership. This goes for partners who are married, but not only. This being said, the necessary condition to dissolving the partnership is that the home is owned by both parties and is registered in both their names. I have filed a claim to dissolve the partnership – what can the court do? When such a claim is submitted, the court has the authority to force the “reluctant” partner. The court can, among other things, appoint a receiver who will sell the home. The receiver’s fee is usually included as an extra percentage of the apartment’s price. As a rule, such a claim is filed in family court because the rabbinic court has jurisdiction only in matters of marriage and divorce.

How can one secure financial existence after the dissolution? One of the most common questions asked regarding this matter is: How can one secure a dignified financial existence if one partner refuses to sell the home. For example, what is the law in cases where the custodial partner resides in the home and refuses to sell it? How can one make sure that the custodial parent and the children have a roof above their heads? The answer to these matters is that, usually, the court will come to a separate decision regarding the dissolution, separate from the divorce procedures. A claim to dissolve the partnership does not prevent the option of getting temporary alimony, in cases where the residents in the home are the wife and children. The wife can also claim for payment of housing expenses, which will assure a monthly income that will cover the cost of housing. These subjects are parallel to the claim for dissolution of the partnership and are usually heard in the framework of a claim for divorce, filed in the rabbinic or family court.

Is it worthwhile to claim for dissolution of a partnership? The answer could be positive in cases where there is no possibility to force the reluctant partner to sell the home. In many cases, this refusal has many reasons, realistic or emotional. In some cases the couple cannot agree about the sale of the home, which leaves no choice but to file a claim to the court. Since, in most cases, the claim is between ex-partners who have children together, I feel that the best way is agreement and compromise. It is best that the couple discuss and reach an agreement, within the framework of the divorce procedure. If this is unsuccessful, an option to filing a claim is open before the parties. It is best to consult with an experienced family lawyer who will advise you of the best way for you. Adv. Hagit Halevy’s office specializes in family matters including divorce, mediation, wills, inheritance, common-law spouses, financial agreements, divorce agreements and violence in the family. The Modiin Clothes Swap By: Joanna Maissel Because I believe strongly in recycling I am sort of happy with the new plastic bag law. I personally don’t think 10 agorot is enough, but at least it’s a start and from my visual survey in the local supermarkets it seems to be doing the job. My whole house is one big recycling project. I collect and upcycle second-hand furniture for my house, have received and passed on endless bags of second-hand children’s toys and books and a few years ago I turned my passion for second-hand clothes into a win-win project – The Modiin Clothes Swap! This year will be the fourth Modiin Clothes Swap, and I am hoping to up my average of raising 4,000 NIS and I’m aiming to attract over 100 people – with your help. Interested? Read on.

34

So what is a clothes swap? Residents of Modiin (you) bring me good quality women’s and teenage clothes (not men’s or children’s) and jewelry up until Pesach – exactly at the time when you are clearing out cupboards and shaking out the dust on those summer clothes. Yes, I am happy to receive your bags of clothes in my house just before Pesach! However when you drop off the clothes, I remind you that this is a fundraising event and I would appreciate a 50 NIS donation if you are not planning to actually attend the event. What a deal – 50 NIS to charity for allowing you to drop off your good clothes. Then at specific times and dates (watch this space – the ModiInfo website, the Modiin App, and Our Modiin Facebook page), I turn my house into a shop for a few days. The clothes are elegantly laid out, there are changing rooms, mirrors and also a fine window display, arranged by my husband who uncovered his hidden talent. Each person that attends pays 50 NIS on entry and this entitles them to take up to eight items of clothing. If you want more than

eight items then you pay another 50 NIS. Jewelry items are an extra 10 NIS each. It is a fun event – you come with a few friends, try on things that you wouldn’t normally try on, have a cup of tea (provided on-the-house) and hopefully go home with some “new” items, having donated money to a good cause along the way. As I said a win-win situation. Where are your donations from the Clothes Swap going to? Shaked, the son of Muki and Mandy Bortz Jankelowitz, is 20 years old. He is the same age as my son Carmi and they met when they were in mishpachton together at the age of six months. Their lives have taken very different paths. Shaked was diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum at age two and I have watched him grow up and achieve amazing things due to

the dedication of his parents who always looked for every possible way to support him and enrich his life. Shaked plays the piano, swims, reads in Hebrew and English and loves making digital photo albums. Currently Shaked is in a school for autistic children and he will be there until the end of this year. Muki and Mandy are currently raising money to build a “Home for Life” that will be an independent living facility for 24 young autistic adults in Modiin. This is so that Shaked will have a dedicated home to go to when he reaches 21. It will be a home that will provide him with everything according to his needs, but it will also be in close proximity to the home he grew up in, close to his parents, his brother Niv, and his pets Woody and Tula. The good news is that since our previous clothes swap, Muki and Mandy and the other parents are well on their way to reaching their goal of raising enough money to build the home. Your participation in the Modiin Clothes Swap will help towards them achieving their aim. Please whatsapp or sms me at 054-771-8322 to get the address for dropping off clothes. Looking forward to seeing you all.

Cool Shaping-Fat Freezing-Fat Reduction

We all want to feel good about ourselves. I remember myself as a little girl, loving to pamper others and doing my mother’s, sister’s and all my girlfriends’ hair, make-up, and nails. That love grew into taking care of others and making them feel better in body and soul.

As the years went by, I took my dream and love of beauty to another level and became a beautician. My goal was and is to be attentive to my clients’ concerns about their body image. I remember talking to all of the women in my life – my mother, Susan, my sister, Natalee, and my clients and friends that were all frustrated about their extra body weight, or baby leftover fat. They felt uncomfortable with the stubborn fat that would not come off with dieting and exercise. The vital element is to feel comfortable in our own skin – literally and figuratively. Body image, self-esteem and self-awareness all play a part from childhood through adulthood. How many times have we thought to ourselves, “how fantastic would it be for an innovative person to invent a machine that would take our fat away with no hard work.” With all the joking about it, I always believed that one day we would be able to enjoy the greatness of technology. Our dream came true... my dream came true... with the Cool Shaping technology. This, of course, goes without saying that

proper diet and exercise are also important, but this dream of ours keeps our motivation going. Cool Shaping by 4mp offers the most advanced body slimming solution by the integrated technology of cryplipolysis and vacuum technology, and best of all it’s non-surgical. It’s a proven solution for fat reduction that uses the methodology of cooling (hence the name, cool shaping) the body to about 4 degrees Celsius. The cool shaping technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and affectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen) and then die. Over time the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead calls, leaving a more sculpted you. Fat cells that are frozen during the cool shaping procedure are emitted through the body’s natural elimination process. That’s why the results are long-term and long-lasting. The fat is gone for good! Untreated areas will have no change in fat cell distribution. This treatment is highly recommended by doctors. Millions of happy clients have been treated successfully by cryolipolysis and the phenomenon is catching on more and more because of its positive effects. Your body and soul can have it all! Meet Robotics Team Alan Turing The small, but mighty Team Alan Turing (named after the mathematician) is made up of six students ages 11-14 from different schools throughout the Modiin area: Shmaya Heller (14) Netaim; Matan Green (12) Amit Boys’ High School; Yoav Muscal (11) Yachad; Erez Schreiber (12) Yeshivat Shalavim; Lehava Segal (11) The Democratic School; and Dani Stein (11) Shivtei Yisrael. These six students attend ThinkHigher, a cooperative thinking and creativity project run by The LearningWorks, a Jerusalem based social start-up led by Shaiel Yitzchak and Ariel Hershler. After advancing from the first round of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics competition held in February, the team worked around the clock, often spending long days in Jerusalem and

Modiin researching, coding and fine-tuning their robot, Sesame. On Thursday March 2, Team Alan Turing headed to Tel Aviv for the Israeli championship FLL Robotics competition. Even though they were a younger and less-experienced team than many of their opponents, Team Turing was ready to compete! Their level of talent, teamwork, pride and maturity was apparent throughout the competition and was noted by the judges. Although the team did not advance to the international competition, they won a prestigious trophy in the category of “Inspiration”. Team Turing talks about their experience from the FLL Israeli championship and the highlights from their preparation for that incredible day. Matan Green: It is a lot of fun to work as part of a team. We spent a lot of time in the past few months working on our robot and on our research project, and after all of our hard work we advanced to the Israeli Finals! For another month we worked hard on improving our robot and our research project. Then the day of the finals came, our results were great – our robot did very well and our team won a trophy for Team Inspiration. The experience overall was very Continued at page 43

fun and I hope to be in FLL next year too. Erez Schreiber I started being interested in Robotics this summer when I went to Hacker Camp in Jerusalem. Every year teams have to build and program a robot out of Legos to complete missions set forth by FIRST. Every year there is a different theme and this year it was Animal Allies; the missions all had to do with animals interacting with humans. This experience was important for my future because it helped me learn more about programming and I really want to work in this field when I grow up. It also taught me how to work with different people and become a team member working towards a goal. It was hard to balance missing school and preparing for the competition, but still I continued on and did not give up! Yoav Muscal Another part of the competition is a research project having to do with human and animal interactions. We worked on a way to stop Cynophobia (the fear of dogs) before it fully develops. We developed a trust system using characters from TV shows to give the kids motivation to have a positive interaction with dogs. This solution might seem logical, but it’s really innovative, because it

in

allows kids to easily build trust, because we used something they already trust – their favorite TV characters, before the fear fully develops. We even talked to the creator of “Phineas and Ferb” about making an episode about it! FLL was an amazing experience! I learned new and valuable things, but also had a lot of fun. Dani Stein It was such an honor to be the youngest TLW (The Learning Works) team to go to nationals. My favorite part of the competition was seeing all the teams from different places around Israel and the world. Teams give out headbands and pins to show team spirit and often they reflect the personalities of the team. I love meeting new people because different people teach you new things. It so cool because each team is unique in their own way, it’s kind of like snowflakes, no two are alike. I hope to meet more new people when we go back to Nationals next year!

Let’s Wake Up By: Dina Solomon

“The time of song has arrived and the buds are seen in the land.” Walk out anywhere in nature and experience the truth of this quotation from Shir HaShirim. The rains have drenched the earth and it is giving forth its greenery and color. We want to fling open our windows and dust out the corners of our homes and our hearts. The days are lengthening and we come slowly out of our winter hibernation. Touch the earth and be renewed. In this season we became a people, and at this time every year the same spirit of renewal returns to the world. Be willing to leave your personal Egypt and throw off all that is extraneous, both in your closet and in your daily activities. Keep only what is serving you to move forward with your life’s mission. Know and believe that there is divine help and avail yourself of it. Put on some music while you scrub and straighten. Smile often even for no reason. It is healing to the nervous system and

brings more joy into the world. Laughter is even better and is well known to reduce stress and release those good hormones which strengthen the immune system. In winter we crave warming foods, such as soups and stews, and fragrant loaves of bread. Now it is time to switch over to lighter fare. Drink plenty of water to flush out the accumulated debris. There is a wonderful practice from the Ayurvedic tradition called oil pulling. First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, place 1 Tbs of unrefined coconut oil or olive oil in your mouth. Swish it around, pulling it through your teeth for 10-20 minutes. The many benefits of this simple practice include promoting the health of the gums and jaw, soothing sore throat, reducing inflammation in the body and general detoxing. After 20 minutes spit it into the trash (not the sink as this can clog your drain) and then rinse your mouth with warm water. You can do this while preparing breakfast, or your kids’ sandwiches for school. The best part is that you can’t

speak to anyone while doing it so you have some quiet first thing in the morning! Next have a cup of warm water with the juice of half a lemon and a small piece of grated ginger. This will help to get your metabolism moving and alkalize the body. Since all disease thrives in an acidic environment this is a good step toward protecting yourself. It is best to wait at least a half hour before eating anything solid. Do a little stretching while the kettle is boiling. Simply reach up, bend side to side and swing your arms over your shoulders. Keep your spine flexible by moving it in every direction – this is the secret of remaining strong and youthful as the years pass by. Raise your arms like branches and absorb the good

energy that is shining down. Try to look at your family and your friends with new eyes. Inner peace really is a choice that you can make at every moment. Energizing Green Smoothie 1 cup water or cold herbal tea 1 handful green leaves such as spinach, chard, kale, or any of the wild greens that are abundant right now – dandelion, milk thistle, or chickweed 1 inch piece of ginger,

peeled and chopped 1 cup frozen berries or pineapple chunks 1 frozen banana 1 medjoul date Ice cubes (optional) Blend well and enjoy! Peanut Butter Swirl-fudge 1 cup peanut butter ½ cup coconut oil, liquefied ¼ cup honey or maple syrup 1 pinch of salt Chocolate swirl ½ cup of the peanut butter mixture, reserved ¼ cup cocoa powder 1 Tbs liquefied coconut oil 1 Tbs honey 1 tsp vanilla Pinch of salt In a mixing bowl, combine the first four ingredients, mixing well. Reserve ½ cup of

the mixture for the chocolate swirl. Pour the rest into a 5 by 9 inch pan or container and spread evenly with a spatula. Into the remaining mixture add the cocoa, coconut oil, honey and a pinch of salt. Put spoonfuls of the cocoa mixture on top of the mixture in the pan and then use a knife to swirl it. Place in the freezer for at least one hour. Cut into squares and store in the freezer until ready to serve. For Pesach, the peanut butter can be substituted with almond butter.
