VIOLENCEFEAR AT THEQUARRY

Violenceagainstwomenand girlsisontheriseinoneofShrop shire’smostpopularparks,areport haswarned.

SalopiansflocktotheQuarry,in Shrewsbury,for summer festivals andconcertsandforwalksbythe riverallyearround.

Butareportsayswomen have been targeted at thepark. Allegationsofoffenceshavingtakenplace in theparkrange from trafficking andgroomingtodrugtaking.

Thereportcomes afterpolice confirmedaninvestigationwasun derwayaftera19-year-oldwoman reportedshehadbeenrapedinacar in Bank Farm Road,Radbrook, on October30.

In thesummer,Shrewsbury TownCouncilrampedupsecurityin theQuarry,doublingthehoursthat guardsareondutyfrom30hoursa weekto60hoursaweekinAugust, withataximarshalalsoemployed tomanagethenighttimeeconomy.

Theauthorityisusing£168,000ofa SaferStreetsgrantfromWestMercia policeandcrimecommissionerJohn Campiontofundthebeefed-upsecu ritypresence

“Ofparticularnotehasbeenthe numberofviolenceagainstwomen andgirlsthathavebeenraisedby security staff; thesehaveincluded potentialgrooming,indecency,traf ficking andgeneral vulnerability fromalcoholanddrugconsumption Inthesecircumstancespolice,safeguarding andsocialserviceshave been informed to progress action andinsomecircumstancesthereare livepoliceinvestigations.
