Celebrations are taking place at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley as twoclinical wards havebothreceivedGoldStandardFramework (GSF)accreditations, whichisanesteemed recognition of thehighlevel of care beingdelivered by those departments.

Ward C5 whichspecialises in RespiratoryCareandWardC6which specialisesinUrologyhavesuccessfullymanagedtoachievetheaccreditationfortheveryfirsttime

WardsisterontheUrologyWard LeanneMcKeownsaid:“Asateam wearesopassionateaboutpalliative andendoflifecare,sowearethrilled toreceiveGSFaccreditation

“Thisachievementacknowledges allthehardworktheteamputinto makeadifferencetopatients.”

Inaddition,wardsprovidingcare intheareasofRenal,Oncologyand Frailty have cemented Gold Standards Frameworkre-accreditation, anotherhugeachievement forthe Trust.

TheGoldStandardsFramework (GSF)isthe UK’s leadingtraining providerfor frontlinehealthcare staff,caringforpeopleintheirlast yearsoflife.GSFisapracticaland evidence-basedendoflifecareimprovementprogramme,whichaims toenablea‘goldstandard’ofcarefor everyone,withanycondition,inany setting,givenbyanycareprovider, atanytimeinaperson’slastyearsof life.

Whenhostinganexternalassessor,staffontheRespiratoryWard alsotooktheopportunitytodebut theirnew ‘SunflowerSuite’which wasfundedbygenerousdonations throughtheTrust’scharity

Theroomisacalmandpeacefulspaceforbothpatientsandtheir

lovedones,aswellasstafftotakea moment of respitewheneverthey needit.Thehallmarklastsforaperiodofthreeyearsbeforeitcanbe re-appliedfor

Inordertoobtaintheaccreditation,theareashavetoclearlyshow howtheyaresupportingbothfam-

iliesandpatientstodiscussendof lifecareplanningandwhatmatters to them.To gainaccreditation the wardshaveundergoneaninspection fromtheGSFnationalteamtoreviewtheirpracticesagainsttheevidencesubmittedbythewardteams

Emergencydepartmenttransformationbegins

TheDudleyGroupNHSFoundationTrustarethrilledtoannounce thatworksareunderwayatRussellsHallHospitaltotransformresusfacilities,followingasuccessful redevelopment bidfortheTrust’s emergencydepartment

EnablingworksbeganinSeptember,signifyingthestartofthe worktoprovideanewstate-of-theartfacility, whichwill includean enhancedresuscitationspace,that willrevolutionisethecaregivenat theTrust’semergencydepartment

Theredevelopmentincludesadditionalresuscitationfacilitieswith adedicatedpaediatricareaandiso-

lationroomstoprovideappropriatesafecareintheeventoffuture pandemics or outbreaks. Further to this,the department will have state-of-the-arttechnology and equipment,includingadigitalmedicinesystemtoimprovethestoring, usageandprescribingofdrugsto patients.

We’vealsoexperiencedsome newandexcitingchanges.

Sinceourlasteditionwe’ve welcomedour newchief nurse MartinaMorrisandwe’vewelcomedfournew non-executivedirectorswhoeachbringa wealthofexperienceandinsight toTheDudleyGroup

Anydisruption to theTrust’s emergencydepartmentwillbekept toaminimumthroughouttheprocesshowever,duetotheseworks,it maymeanthatservicesarebusier thanusual.

Patientsare askedtochoose services appropriately andtake simplestepstohelpensurecareis availabletothosewhoneeditmost This includes using111 online asthefirstportofcallforhealth needs,visitingyourGPorattending yourlocalpharmacyandonlyusing 999inanemergency.

Ourteamsarealsobusydrivingforwardourgoaltoachieve University Hospital status in partnershipwithAstonUniversity;aprojectthatwillcontinue throughoutthenext12months, butIlookforwardtosharingupdatesasitprogresses

Each year theTrust sets out ourquality prioritiesfor the following 12 months.This is doneinconsultationwithstaff, governors, ourcommissioners andHealthwatchcolleagues.

2023/2024has seen unprecedenteddemandforemergencyservicescoupledwithdelayedtransfers ofcarecreatingabottleneckwithin acuteservices.DespitethechallengesfacingtheTrust,theTrustiscommittedtodrivingforwardimprovementsthatenhanceourpatientcare andtheirexperiencewhilstinour careatTheDudleyGroupofHospitalsNHSFoundationTrust.

Here,welookathow we have doneagainstourtargetsforlastyear, andoutlineourtargetsforthecomingyear.

1.a)During2023/24therewere 469patientswho completeda real-timeinpatientsurvey.59%ofpatientsstated‘yes’whenaskedifthey werespokentoaboutaplantoget themwellenoughtogohome.57% ofpatientsstatedthattheywereinformedoftheirexpecteddateofdischarge.

HomeforLunchremainstheprimarydischargeprogrammeacross theTrustandthefocus.

Clinical DischargeFacilitators (Band6)havebeenintroducedinto theDischargeTeamtohelpwithimprovingthemanagementofcomplex dischargepatientsand supporting theadminteams with increased clinicalinput.

Retrainingofclinicalstaffundertakentoensuredischargechecklists arecompletedroutinely with patientsasearlyinthepatientjourney aspossible.

Literatureisnowreadilyavailableatallpointsinthepatientjourneydescribingdischargepathways appropriatetotheclinicalareas. Introductionofseniorstaffmemberstobeingavailableatsettimes dailytoanswerquestionsandfind outthedesiredinformation

Progress is monitored through updatesonprogressagainst the workstreamsatthePatientExperience Group meetingfor assurance of recommendationshavingbeen completedandimprovementsmade. Inaddition,thedocumentationaudit scores will focusonthe discharge checklistcompletionandrepeatreal-timesurvey

Ourprogress:

a) TheTrust hasnot metthe 30%KPIforallinpatientdischarges tobeachievedbeforelunchconsistently Monday to Sunday.However, it is notedthere hasbeensignificantimprovementinthenumberof in-patientsdischargedbefore12.00 O’clock, especially Mondaysand weekends.

FromNovember2023,theTrust openedadditionalcapacitybedswith thepurposetofreeacutecapacityin response to thedemandrequired byouremergencyattendances.The Trustproactively transferred any patientsthatcouldgohomeforlunch andanypredictedfordischargesfor thefollowingdaywherepossibleinto thedischargelounge.Processeshave beenstrengthenedtosupportearly opportunitiesfor dischargecombinedwithproactive patient care planningandtreatment

TheHomefor Lunchteamhas providedfocused supportfor the SurgicalDivisionwhichachievedstatisticallysignificantimprovementin earlydischarges, decreasedlength ofstayandoveralldischargeperformanceMondaytoSundayacrossall specialties.Despitetheimprovement theoveralltargetwasnotachieved

b)TheDischargeloungehasbeen utilisedasaninpatientareafromOctober2023–April2024tosupport winterpressures.Thekeyfocusnow willbetoworkcloselywiththeDischargeteamandtoliaisewiththe siteteamtoensurepatientsadmittedtotheloungearemedicallyoptimisedfordischargetode-escalate andreturntoafullyoperationaldischargelounge7daysperweek.

TheDudleyGroupNHSFoundationTrustispreparingtoget into theChristmas spirit with preparationsbeingmadeforthe returnofthepopularmarket.

Theeventissettotakeplace on Wednesday4th December, from11amto4pm,atthemain entranceofRussellsHallHospitalandwillgivestaffandvisitorsthechancetosupportsmall local businesses andthe DudleyGroup’sNHScharity,whilst snapping up some festivepurchasesaheadofChristmas.

With around adozen stalls setupoutsidethemainentrance ofthehospital,shopperswillbe abletopurchaseitemssuchas handmadegreetingcards,baked goods,jewellery,handmadebath andbodyproducts,candles,wax meltsandmuchmore!

RussellsHallHospital marks40thbirthday

Earlierthis year TheDudley Group celebrated the40thanniversaryofthe officialopeningofRussellsHallHospital.

On May21st, 1984,HRH PrincessAnnevisitedDudleytoofficially open thenew hospital building whichhad welcomedits first patientsinMarch1984

Royalapprovalforvirtualward

Celebrations took placeat Russells Hall Hospital after theTrust’s world-renowned Paediatric VirtualWardwelcomedits 1,000th patientin earlyMay.

Theprogramme,which first launchedinMarch2022asapilotat theDudleyGroupNHSFoundation Trust,wasthefirstofitskindinthe NHSandcountryandhassavedover 1,945beddayssinceitsinception

Withsevenmembersofstaffnow partoftheteamleadingtheservice, thepatient capacity hasdoubled, withuptotwelvepatientsnowable tobeplacedonthevirtualwardserviceatanygiventime

Inadditiontothis,theteamhave beengiventhe‘royal’sealofapprovalandwereattendeesattheRoyal GardenPartyatBuckinghamPalace onWednesday8thMayinrecognitionoftheincredibleworktheyhave doneforpatientsacrossDudley.

With theirmajestiesKing CharlesandQueenCamillainattendancealongsidefurthermembersof theroyalfamily,theteamwereinvitedtothedaywhichcelebratedpublicservicemembersfromacrossthe country,enjoyingteaandcakeinthe royalgardens

AItechnology aidsstrokecare

Weareexcitedtoannounce that theartificialintelligence software‘RapidAI’was introducedatRussellsHallHospital, withtheaimofimprovingcare forstrokepatientsacrossDudley andfurtherafield.

Interventional Neuroradiology andStroketeams,with thesupportofDigitalTransformationandImagingITdepartments, have launched RapidAI aspartoftheTrust’sstrategyto improvepatientcarethroughthe adoptionofnew,innovativetechnology.

Stroke is alife-threatening anddisabling condition where thebloodsupplytopartofthe brainiscutoff.Timelyandeffectivemanagementofpatients withsuspectedstrokeisvitalto ensurethebestoutcomeforthe patient.Brainscansofpatients areusedtoidentify thecause ofthestrokeandthespeedand accuracyintheinterpretationof thesescansbycliniciansiscriticaltodiagnosisandtreatment.

Toaidfasterdecisionmaking andrapidinterventionbyclinicalteams,artificialintelligence (AI)solutionsforstrokeareincreasinglybeingadoptedacross theNHS.The softwarecreates enhanced, high-quality images frompatientscans,toempower clinicianstomakefasterdiagnosesandtreatmentdecisionsfor strokepatients.

As part of thecelebrations, TheDudleyGrouphostedMayor ofDudleyCouncillorHilaryBills andMayor Consort, John Bills, tore-dedicatetheirwell-recognisedorgandonationsculpture basedatRussellsHallHospital.

Markingthetenyearssince thesculpture’s creation,which commemorates theimportance oforgandonationinDudley,the Trustwerejoinedbyclinicalstaff aswellaspatientswhohavebeen recipientsoforgandonations.

TracyNorthallwasarecipient of amultipleorgan transplantinDudleythreeyearsago, whichsavedherlife.

Whenaskedwhyorgandonationissoimportant,shesaid: “Iwasgivenanewleaseoflife throughorgandonation.I received anew pancreas,liver, small bowel, largeboweland spleen–allofwhichsavedmy lifeandhaveenabledmetosee mychildrengrowup.

“Ittakesjusttwominutesto signupandyoutrulyaregiving someonethegiftoflife.”

Dudleyresidentsaged55to75 whosmokeorhaveahistoryof smoking, nowhave access to a vitalnewhealthserviceaimed at improving theearly detectionoflungcancer

TheTargetedLungHealth CheckProgramme(TLHC)hasbeen launchedacrossDudleytoimprove outcomesfor those at risk of lung cancerintheareafollowingsuccessfullaunchesinBirmingham,Solihull andSandwell.

In April, TheDudley Group, alongside otherNHS trusts, launched Call4Concern©, a safetyserviceforinpatients.

Call4Concernenablespatients and/or relatives, carers,advocates to callfor urgent help andadvice when they areconcernedthatthe patient’s deterioratingcondition is notbeingadequatelyrecognisedby thewardteams

Theinitiativeispartofthe Trust’sresponsetoMartha’sRule, whichwas foundedwhenMartha Millsdiedin2021afterdeveloping sepsis in hospital followingadmittancefor apancreaticinjuryafter fallingoffherbike.

Martha’sfamily’sconcernsabout herdeterioratingconditionwerenot respondedto,andin2023acoroner ruledthatMarthawould probably havesurvivedhadshebeenmoved tointensivecareearlier

In response to this andother casesrelatedtothemanagementof deterioration,theSecretaryofState

forHealthandSocialCareandNHS England committed to implement ‘Martha’sRule’;toensurethevitallyimportantconcernsofthepatient andthosewhoknowthepatientbest arelistenedtoandactedupon.

If anypatient or theirfamilies areconcerned,theyareaskedtofollowthethreesteps:

n Speaktothepatient’shealthcare teamabouttheirconcerns

n Ifthey’renotsatisfiedwiththeresponsereceived,asktospeaktothe nurseincharge.

Iwas electedpublicgovernor forthe Stourbridgeconstituency in December 2021 and became theLeadGovernor in September2022.

Thepastyearhascontinuedto beayearofactiveparticipationby measaleadgovernorandCouncilof Governorcolleaguesincludingsitting ontheinterviewpanelfortherecent recruitmentofournon-executivedirectorsanddeputychair

Thebusiness gala dinner bringstogetherlocalbusinesses foraneveningofnetworkingand entertainment.Thisyear’sGlitterBallwillbetakingplaceon November14thattheCopthorne HotelinBrierleyHill,Dudley.

Theevent is held to raise fundsfor aparticularappeal or to go towardsfundingstaff health andwellbeing projects

Last year’s event raised over £16,500fromsponsorship and tablepackages,aswellasfrom thegenerosityoftheattendees who bought raffle ticketsand auctionprizes
