Earlierthis year TheDudley Group celebrated the40thanniversaryofthe officialopeningofRussellsHallHospital.
On May21st, 1984,HRH PrincessAnnevisitedDudleytoofficially open thenew hospital building whichhad welcomedits first patientsinMarch1984

Theprogramme,which first launchedinMarch2022asapilotat theDudleyGroupNHSFoundation Trust,wasthefirstofitskindinthe NHSandcountryandhassavedover 1,945beddayssinceitsinception
Withsevenmembersofstaffnow partoftheteamleadingtheservice, thepatient capacity hasdoubled, withuptotwelvepatientsnowable tobeplacedonthevirtualwardserviceatanygiventime

TheteamhaspresentedthePaediatricVirtualWardattheEuropean AcademyofPaediatricsCongressin Venice,theRoyalCollegeofPaediatricsandChildHealthConferencein GlasgowandtheAssociatedofExcellenceinPaediatricsInternational ConferenceinParis.
Weareexcitedtoannounce that theartificialintelligence software‘RapidAI’was introducedatRussellsHallHospital, withtheaimofimprovingcare forstrokepatientsacrossDudley andfurtherafield.
Interventional Neuroradiology andStroketeams,with thesupportofDigitalTransformationandImagingITdepartments, have launched RapidAI aspartoftheTrust’sstrategyto improvepatientcarethroughthe adoptionofnew,innovativetechnology.
Stroke is alife-threatening anddisabling condition where thebloodsupplytopartofthe brainiscutoff.Timelyandeffectivemanagementofpatients withsuspectedstrokeisvitalto ensurethebestoutcomeforthe patient.Brainscansofpatients areusedtoidentify thecause ofthestrokeandthespeedand accuracyintheinterpretationof thesescansbycliniciansiscriticaltodiagnosisandtreatment.
Toaidfasterdecisionmaking andrapidinterventionbyclinicalteams,artificialintelligence (AI)solutionsforstrokeareincreasinglybeingadoptedacross theNHS.The softwarecreates enhanced, high-quality images frompatientscans,toempower clinicianstomakefasterdiagnosesandtreatmentdecisionsfor strokepatients.

As part of thecelebrations, TheDudleyGrouphostedMayor ofDudleyCouncillorHilaryBills andMayor Consort, John Bills, tore-dedicatetheirwell-recognisedorgandonationsculpture basedatRussellsHallHospital.
Markingthetenyearssince thesculpture’s creation,which commemorates theimportance oforgandonationinDudley,the Trustwerejoinedbyclinicalstaff aswellaspatientswhohavebeen recipientsoforgandonations.
TracyNorthallwasarecipient of amultipleorgan transplantinDudleythreeyearsago, whichsavedherlife.
Whenaskedwhyorgandonationissoimportant,shesaid: “Iwasgivenanewleaseoflife throughorgandonation.I received anew pancreas,liver, small bowel, largeboweland spleen–allofwhichsavedmy lifeandhaveenabledmetosee mychildrengrowup.
“Ittakesjusttwominutesto signupandyoutrulyaregiving someonethegiftoflife.”
Dudleyresidentsaged55to75 whosmokeorhaveahistoryof smoking, nowhave access to a vitalnewhealthserviceaimed at improving theearly detectionoflungcancer
TheTargetedLungHealth CheckProgramme(TLHC)hasbeen launchedacrossDudleytoimprove outcomesfor those at risk of lung cancerintheareafollowingsuccessfullaunchesinBirmingham,Solihull andSandwell.

In April, TheDudley Group, alongside otherNHS trusts, launched Call4Concern©, a safetyserviceforinpatients.
Call4Concernenablespatients and/or relatives, carers,advocates to callfor urgent help andadvice when they areconcernedthatthe patient’s deterioratingcondition is notbeingadequatelyrecognisedby thewardteams
Theinitiativeispartofthe Trust’sresponsetoMartha’sRule, whichwas foundedwhenMartha Millsdiedin2021afterdeveloping sepsis in hospital followingadmittancefor apancreaticinjuryafter fallingoffherbike.
Martha’sfamily’sconcernsabout herdeterioratingconditionwerenot respondedto,andin2023acoroner ruledthatMarthawould probably havesurvivedhadshebeenmoved tointensivecareearlier
In response to this andother casesrelatedtothemanagementof deterioration,theSecretaryofState
forHealthandSocialCareandNHS England committed to implement ‘Martha’sRule’;toensurethevitallyimportantconcernsofthepatient andthosewhoknowthepatientbest arelistenedtoandactedupon.
If anypatient or theirfamilies areconcerned,theyareaskedtofollowthethreesteps:
n Speaktothepatient’shealthcare teamabouttheirconcerns
n Ifthey’renotsatisfiedwiththeresponsereceived,asktospeaktothe nurseincharge.

HostedbyITVNewsCentralpresenterSameenaAli-Khan,theceremonywasheldattheGrandStation Hotel,Wolverhampton,onThursday June23rd.Thankstoourtrustcharityandsponsorsforhelpingtomake thiseventhappen.
Amongstthewinnerswerethe breastcarenursingteam.Sadly,they lost one of theirown beloved colleaguesfrombreastcancerin2019
andhaveusedwhattheylearntfrom theexperiencetoimprovetheservicefortheirpatients.
Rachael Willets, consultant breastnurse,said:“Thebreastnursingteamweredeeplyhonouredto receivethisaward,especiallyaswe know howhard-working anddedicated manyofour colleagues are too.”
Winnersalsoincludedthecommunity-based pulmonaryrehabilitation team,who won thePatient Choice Award, whichisa special awardwherenominationscomedirectlyfrompatients.

Winning theChair’s Lifetime Achievement Awardwas Professor SauidIshaq,aconsultantgastroenterologist whohas been with the Trustfornearlytwentyyearsandis renownedforhisinnovativeendoscopicwork.
ProfessorSauidIshaqwas‘lost forwords’afterbeingsurprisedon thestagebyhisfamilyandadded:“I wasdelightedtoreceivetheLifetime AchievementAwardandwouldlike tothankeveryonewhohasplayeda partinthatjourney.”
