Count on Crowe locally and globally

While the business headlines tend to focus on the pan-global corporates, such as X and Amazon, did you know that 85 per cent of businesses in the UK are family-owned?

They are the backbone of the UK economy, and that is why the Midlands office of national audit, tax, advisory and risk firm Crowe is proud to continue our support the Express & Star’s annual celebration of the best of Black Country businesses. As sponsors of the Family Business of the Year award, we know what it is like to hear your name called out on the night as we have previously been acclaimed Professional Services Firm of the Year. Working with family and owner-managed businesses in the Black Country is our bread and butter. It’s what we do every day and so we have built up a huge range of experience and knowledge of the local economy and the key drivers that enable local businesses to grow and prosper. Our Family Business Focus will guide you through start up, growth, diversification, and restructuring to succession or exit – the key stages in the life of the family business. We recognise that no two businesses are the same, but many have common characteristics in their development. This includes the following stages: l Developing a Family Charter and family governance plan to outline the future direction of the business, the family’s commitment to the business, and guidelines for handling conflicts should they arise l Planning and structuring your affairs to meet the goals of the business which considers future aspirations l Overseeing your personal tax affairs and, as a business owner, helping you to extract your profits efficiently and prepare for retirement l Advising on how to bridge the gap between shareholders and the finance team to support the aims of the business l Planning for succession, ensuring the business remains suc-

cessful for future generations and the wealth of the founder/business owner is protected l Ensuring your operational needs are met by providing back-office support, giving a flexible solution to compliance, accounting and advisory services. E&S beats the drum for businesses

The Express & Star, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, is proud to once again be staging its annual business awards.

Last year was a year of change for the Express & Star – it became part of the National World newspaper group and moved from its offices in Queen Street, Wolverhampton, to its new office in nearby Mander House above the city’s Mander Centre. What hasn’t changed is the Express & Star’s commitment to celebrating the best in business and championing the success of industry across the Black Country and the south of Staffordshire. The Express & Star is once again sponsoring the overall Business of the Year category in its 2024 business awards. The Business of the Year category has been selected because as a publishing platform the team highlight businesses in the Black Country and surrounding area and continually shine a spotlight on the trades. There are a huge number of platforms to promote a business, including regular supplements, news pages, the dedicated weekly business section, website, social media and the annual awards themselves.

Express & Star Editor-in-Chief Martin Wright says the awards will be special

The 2023 Ladder for the Black Country Apprenticeship Awards winners

Editor-in-chief Martin Wright said: “This is an important year for the Express & Star, when we mark our 150th anniversary. We have always been known as the voice of Wolverhampton and, while much has changed since our launch in 1874, our commitment to being the number one source of trusted local news in the Black Country, South Staffordshire and beyond, remains as strong as ever.

the awards after a two-year break due to Covid-19 and continues to support the Ladder for the Black Country and Ladder for Staffordshire campaigns which are helping to promote apprenticeships and assisting businesses in finding key employees to help them grow. The newspaper also raises the profile of many good causes, with the intention of helping and supporting its readers.

“The business awards are a highlight in our calendar – we can’t wait to share the success of business around the patch with our readers, highlighting the exceptional talent and innovation that drives our region forwards. “The awards promise to be even more special this year because of our anniversary, so please get involved and make 2024 a year to remember.”
