MBE FOR BUSINESS FIGURE

Renowned Aldridge businessman Douglas Wright was made an MBE for services to the economy and charity in the West Midlands.

The McDonald’sfranchisee, who owns and operates 21 restaurants across the West Midlands, was been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list following the Platinum Jubilee.

His honour recognisedhis efforts and services to bring people together to help the community

Last year,Douglas celebrated his 40th anniversary working for McDonald’s, wherehebegan his career as acleaner at the age of 16.

It was the beginning of a remarkable career journey

which led to him being appointed McDonald’s youngest UK restaurant manager by the age of 20, beforegoing on to become one of the largest franchisees in Europe.

He now employ morethan 2,500 people in the area and this year is also celebrating an extraordinary milestone of 20 years as aMcDonald’s franchisee.

His charitable initiatives include asix-year role as chairman for Ronald McDonald House Birmingham, wherehehelpedthe organisation navigate through incredibly difficult times by establishing new ways to fundraise to help provide ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families

with children receivingcare at the nearby Birmingham Children’sHospital.

This was done by setting up the first virtual and hybrid events, with one evening last November raising more than £300,000. Doug’swork with RMHC was recognised globally this year, with a special awardbeing presented to him at the McDonald’s worldwide convention.

CHAMBER CHIEF MOVES TO COVENTRY

The chief executive of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce has left the organisation after six years.

Corin Crane, aged 50, has moved on to lead the team at Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber

He led the Black Country organisation during aperiod when the demand for business support had never been greater, asbusinesses tackled Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I was offered this role in the same week as the Brexit vote and my time leading the Black Country Chamber has been

dominated by big national and international events.

Three Prime Ministers, two national elections, two West Midlands Mayoral elections, lows of post Brexit worries, highs as the West Midlands businesses outperformed all contenders, the paradigm shifting experiences of the Covid pandemic, record vacancies but high youth unemployment, high levels of inflation and energy and fuel costs spiralling out of control.

“Through all this, the one thing that has remained consistent is the incredible resilience of our businesses.

Our business community adapts, innovates, finds new markets, solves problems, keeps astraight face when confronted by policy announcements which fail to hit the mark and battle hard when changes need to be made. Workingfor achamber of commerce is avery privileged position and Ihave been incredibly proud of the people and businesses I’ve represented since 2016,” said Mr Crane.

During his time at the chamber he was the driving force behind the creation of the Black Country Business

Festival, which was held for the first time in 2018 and is due to run again this autumn.

Phil Pursey, chairman of the chamber’sboardofdirectors said: “Corin brought energy and enthusiasm to the Black Country and set the chamber on acourse which has seen us rapidly modernise as an organisation across many areas of our operation.

“Going on to become a well-known and respected business figure, Corin’s leadership has meant that the chamber remains primed to deliver the types of business support our members rely on.”

PROTECTING AGAINST NEW CYBER ATTACKS

How to protect your business against zeroday cyber attacks

Didyou know that four malwareattacks happen every minute in the UK and out of these, ahuge96per cent of them arezero-day attacks? Let’stake alook at the steps you can take to help protect your business.

What is azero-day threat?

Azero-daythreat is a malwarethreat that hasn’t been seen beforeand doesn’t matchany known malware signatures which means that it can’tbedetected by traditional cyber security software. This threat might exploit an unknown software vulnerability

Why should you be concerned about zero-day threats?

Cyber attacks arebecoming moreand more prevalent and new zero-day threats areoriginating at an alarming rate. In order to protect your network, applications and data, it is vital to have an advanced threat prevention system in place.

How can you protect your business against zero-day attacks?

Although the natureofzeroday malwarethreats mean that we cannot see them coming, thereare still various ways you can help to protect your business.

1. Keep your softwareup to date to ensurethat security patches areinplace and reduce the risk of malware infection

2. Use afirewall to monitor and block suspicious activity

3. Use an antivirus software to protect you against known and unknown threats

4. Ensureyour team is educated on zero-day threats and seek out solutions when zero-day vulnerabilities are discovered

5. Limit the amount of applications you use, as the less you download, the less data you areputting at risk

Advanced Security Protection

In today’sclimate, abasic firewall is no longer enough to protect your business against cyber security threats; you need afull set of scanning engines to safeguardyour network against viruses, spyware, malicious apps and data leaks.

What should your security protection include?

Cloud Sandboxing:

Organisations of all sizes arefalling victim to sophisticated cyber attacks. Cloud sandboxes simulate physical hardware, exposing malwarewhich is designed to recognise and evade traditional network security defenses.

AI-Powered Anti-Malware: Signature-based anti-virus solutions areonly able to detect known threats, whereas AI-powered anti-malwareuses amachine-learning engine which can predict threats. As modernmalware mutates at an incredible rate, humanproduced signature-based virus detection is rapidly becoming obsolete.

DNS Filtering: Hackers rely on DNS to carry out cyber attacks. DNS filtering detects and blocks potentially dangerous sites, protecting your network and team from damaging malwareinfections. Cloud-based DNS filtering services areefficient and save time and money

Kevin Preston who has been integral to the technological development of the company as production director, has takenonthe role of managing director Mark Bifield, having overseen ahugely positive culture change for 15 years as works manager, has been promoted to production director.Richard Dyer is commercial director, having successfully steered the commercial development of business for several years and David Sherry has taken on the role of sales director,a promotion which recognises thesignificant contribution he has made to developing sales at Dreadnought Tiles as

OPPORTUNITIES FOR BLACK COUNTRYINEXPORTING

Dave Atkinson, regional director for the West Midlands at Lloyds Bank, looks at some of the benefits of exploring overseas trade opportunities and how Midlands firms can make the most of these.

“In the Queen’sSpeech, the Government said it will “continue to champion international trade” over the next Parliamentary term, with new trade deals set to be implemented over the next year

“This will bring moretrade in new markets, and we hope that it will open the door for moreWest Midlands

firms to exploreexporting opportunities. While it may feel like astep into the unknown for those dipping their toes into foreign waters for the first time, international trade can provide additional revenue and growth opportunities when the economy and customer demand in the UK might be uncertain.

“For those looking to exploreinternational markets for the first time, thereare a few simple steps they can take to help them preparefor and make the most of these opportunities.

“One of the first steps to

selling overseas is identifying the right markets to target. It is important to thoroughly research factors such as market trends and local competition to determine wherethe strongest demand for your products lies.

“At Lloyds Bank, we’ve developed an International Trade Portal, which gives firms information on everything from trade shows to potential overseas business partners to help inform export strategy right from the start. Lloyds Bank business customers can access this via our website or through their app.

“Another important step is to understand how selling to customers overseas can be different from within the UK. For example, export deals can take longer to complete than domestic trades, in part due to the distances involved. Slower deliveries, and as aresult slower payment, can put a squeeze on cashflow, making it moredifficult to turnassets into cash.

“Thereare opportunities abroad, and by planning ahead and making the most of support available, more firms can step into the global marketplace.”

COULD IGNORANCE REALLYBEBLISS?

The Dunning- Kruger effect proposes that thereisarelationship between our level of ignorance and our confidence.

In essencethose people with alow competence at something overestimate their ability.Whereas the high performers tend to underestimate their skills.

I’m surethat many of us will recognise the person who comes out of atest saying how badly they feel they have done, only to get top marks when the result finally comes in.

In the past Ihave thought of this as modesty on their part but perhaps they aresimply displaying the Dunning Kruger effect.

This cognitive inaccuracy is an example of just how poor we aremaking judgments about ourselves.

When we embark on anew task or learning anew skill, most of us lack confidence at the start because we recognise our own inexperience.

However, after awhile of doing something, we can start to feel we aremastering the task –gettinginto acomfort zone.

But if we arebeing pushed after atime; we often begin to realise that thereissomuch moretolearnthan we first

thought and we look fondly back to those early days of ignorance.

Hopefully, ifwepersist in our learning; our skills and confidence begin to converge until they intersect, and we recognise our own competency because we have actually achieved it.

In my day job as the chief executive of Dudley College of Technology Ifrequently see learners who fall into the overestimaters or the underestimaters of their abilities all the time, and recognise that each has something vital to learnabout themselves and the process of education.

Isimplywant them to stick with the task so they can gain amoretruthful understanding of themselves.

And Iknow that however much we learn, however many skills we master; all of us are simply scratching the surface of knowledge.

The moreexperiences you have, the morethings there arethat you know. But also, the morethings you know you don’tknow.

No matter how long you live therewill be an infinite amount of knowledge of which only you can grasp asmall amount.

Even Stephen Hawking had his limitations with an IQ of 160 the same as Albert Einstein but two points lower than Birmingham schoolgirl

Freya Mangotra, who took the test when she was just 10-years-old in 2019.

Hawking famously lost abet to the American theoretical physicist John Preskill on the natureofblack holes and he was cheerfully forced to acknowledge his own limitations. Concluding like Isaac Newton beforehim: “What we know is adrop, what we don’tknowisan ocean.”

Ihave heardknowledge described as an expanding circle the moreyou learnthe moreyou push the boundaries of the circle but as you do so the circumference of the circle expands and the moreyou come into contact with things you don’tknow.

So, in learning you arealso paradoxicallyexpanding your ignorance.

But Ifirmly believe that is not an argument for choosing not to expand our skills and knowledge. In fact we cannot avoid doing so.

Whether it be consciously or unconsciously life is learning.

So, Iwould encourage everyone to try to expand their own boundaries, learn anew skill and be just alittle bitmoreinformed on just one thing.

We allhave to start somewhereafter all and who knows to whereitmightlead us?

THE FUTURE IS NOW

THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS STILL CONTINUING TO GROW

Social media networks are becoming moreand more popular by the minute, as morethan80per cent of the world with access to the internet areusers of social media!

This is still expected to grow over time.

In previous years, we were happy to receivecomments and friend requests from friends and family, now it has been so engrained within all of our daily lives we can promote services, businesses and buy products and goods. Many companies use social media to communicate with their customers and to promote their business through different social media platforms. With the vast number of changes happening in adigital world –what will happen next?

Social media platforms arenot just creating coverage for your brand whereyou can promote your services directly, itisnow becoming easier and easier to conduct direct sales through your platforms. For example, you can now buy products straight through Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok.

With the rise of mobile users, advertising can be used for specific types of targeting using these devices to increase spontaneous purchases.

Nearly 95 per cent of all social media users access their favourite channels on mobile devices, and as social networks have ad formats specifically for this, mobile advertising will continue to become even morepopular. There has already been aslowdecline of PC and desktop users in recent years

Video and visual information has always been morepopular than standardtext. Visual content is rising faster than any other type of content with the huge increase of platforms like TikTok that offer small quick snippets of video, and anewsfeed that is personalised to your tastes over time. These features arepivotal in the development of social media marketing, as reaching your target audience is easier than ever

If you have an online business then chatbots areone of the most beneficial tools. They can have awiderange of features, for example: displaying aproduct

gallery to encourage purchases, answer simple FAQ’sand find a location of aservice. They will soon take over the digital world.

Influencer marketing is on the rise fast, and with the huge amount of advertising online that is on everyone’sscreens it is refreshing to see aperson sharing aproduct with us as it doesn’treally feel like advertising at all, strengthening the personal connection.

Looking to buy something but you can’tfind anywherethat sells locally? Local brand social media pages will be on the rise, as it increases the option for businesses to communicate with individuals on apersonal level. For example, Instagram has implemented location pages meaning that it is easy to search and explorelocal products.

Thereare awhole host of aspects that areonthe rise for social media and businesses must keep up in achanging digital world.

James Keeney-Wilson, senior PPC manager at MNA Digital says: “No one can predict how social media is going to change in a

large span such as five to10 years’ time, nor would it truly benefit a business to start thinking up a social media campaign now to be used in that time period. The most reasonable approach is to keep pace with the changes and trends as they happen, adapting your marketing strategy to the constantly evolving online world.

“Fundamentally, the key to this is don’tbescaredtotry new features or platforms, test them on asmaller scale wherepossible, learnwhatyou canabout them to improve your skills or performance and then scale up whereyou can.”

If you arelooking to expand your knowledge on social media advertising then MNA Digital has the perfect free webinar for you to attend on September 22 at 10.30am. Your speaker will be James Keeney-Wilson who will cover everything you need to know on boosting sales online. Save your space on the website events page.

Mark’sdetermination, drive and passion did not stop, and success continued as the business increased its turnover year on year. These successes lead to doubling the annual turnover within 10 years of Marks tenure. CLOSING THE DIGITAL SKILLS GAP

Matt Weston, managing director of Vantage 365, Brierley Hill, says that with moreand morecompanies embracing automation technologies to streamline their processes and practices, those organisations that areslow to adapt will likely find their productivity trailing that of their competitors ultimately.

Improving the skillis of employees so that they areable to create their own automations is essential for ensuring that processes areboth fitfor purpose and robust.

Mr Weston says the Black Country is still aregion dominated by manufacturing, construction, and other sectors that are generally further behind the technology curve than others. In the region, thereisstill an overreliance on performing tasks in the same way that they have been performed for decades, with many organisations continuing to rely heavily on the use of pen and paper to recordimportant information, without any kind of formal filing system.

With technology continuing to shape the futureofthe UK’sbusiness landscape, Black Country businesses run the risk of falling

behind their competitors from different corners of the country if they fail to adapt through digital transformation.

He says that automation at all levels of an organisation, when correctly implemented, can open up ahuge number of opportunities –not only for the organisation itself, but for the wider community too.

“The key part of addressing the digital skill gap is, first of all, to understand the benefits that aretherefor you and your organisation. Thereare still many businesses that do not realisethe potential that investing in technology can bring for them, and as such arefalling behindwhen it comes to embracing automation and training staff.

“The sooner that these organisations learn the time and cost saving benefits of technology, and having aworkforce that is well equipped to work alongside it, the sooner the digital skills gap can begin to be bridged,” explains Mr Weston.

“Organisations of all sectors arenow going through arevolution in terms of their use of technology. Some sectors aremovingmore quickly than others, and those companies who lag behind in this period of transformation risk becoming obsolete,” he warns.

“The Ladder Apprenticeship Foundation is championing the ‘Ladder of opportunity’, the mobility of learners through, education and work. We believe a diversity of apprenticeships area key factor towards amoremobile, andjust society

“This is moresothe case given the pandemic’sdisproportionate impact on some of those communities, and we have to address the misbalance, and the misbalance of the matching vacancies to those potential apprentices.

“These awards will magnify the best of those championing this effort,” he enthused.

The awards mark another step in the Express &Star’scontinuing backing to the Ladder for the Black Country campaign which sees weekly coverage in the newspaper

It covers businesses that are creating apprenticeships, new initiatives to support apprentices and the success stories of many of the apprentices that areshowing

Midland News Association head of advertising Kim Hazel said: “The Express &Star wanted to give our full support to the important efforts to increase the number of apprenticeships in the Black Country through these awards.
