Investment in its own IT has helped transform afurniture repair company that has just celebrated its 20th anniversary and helped make it areal Black Country success story

James Lane, founder of Emmiera Group, started the former Homeserve Furniture Repairs from his home in Amblecote as one man in a van.

Three years later it moved to Delph Lane Industrial Estate in Brierley Hill.

The continued growth of the business saw it move to its current much bigger premises at Waterfront Business Park in the town in May 2022. The call centrethereoperates 9am to 5pmMondaytoFriday and handles morethan 5,000 jobs aweek.

Emmiera Group –renamed last summer for Mr Lane’s three daughters Emmie, Rose and Abbie –now employs morethan 250 including

its nationwide team of technicians who go out to carry out the repair work.

Chief executive Mr Lane said he was very proud what Emmiera Group had grown to become.

“The rebrand has been areal success and and went moresmoothly than expected,” he added.

The 20th anniversary celebration day on February 23 at head office was an opportunity for the whole team to let their hair down. There was areally good buzz and it was areally great day,” said Mr Lane, who says that the group is set to move into new areas in the future.

“I’m hoping for another 20 years of growth for Emmiera.”

The bespoke efficient system developed by IT manager Dav Pattar and his in-house team has been key to the growth and success. It is constantly

being improved and refined. The arrival of smartphones was transformational for the business with technicians now using an app to find out about their jobs. It also means customers can track the progress of their repair.

Electric vehicle giant Tesla is to open aregional hub for vehicle servicing in Wolverhampton.

The United States company, owned by Elon Musk, has been given the green light to open up in abuilding on the former gas holder site at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park in Mammoth Drive, just offthe Stafford Road.

Tesla, which has its headquarters in Austin, Texas, has been given approval to make external alterations to the recentlyconstructed unit on which work started in September 2022.

Alterations to the arrangement of the outside parking area at the 18,000 sq metres site will see parking

Awash bay for cars is being installed along with aseries of post andwall-mounted EV charging points.

In astatement to planners, Kevin Ayrton of ELG Planning, acting on behalf of Tesla, said: “These changes are required as part of the company’sproposalto occupy the building. Tesla are an innovative industry leader in the development of electric engines, solar and integrated energy solutions, and one of the most valuable companies in the world.

“They areatthe cutting edge of the knowledge industry as one of the earliest developers of electric vehicles. Their profile and operation

fully complement the technology-focused business park at Wolverhampton Science Park.

“A separate application for aLawfulDevelopment Certificate is being made at the same time, to seek formal confirmation that the proposed use of the building by Tesla does not need planning permission for a change of use, as has already been confirmed by the local planning authority as part of pre-application discussions with the landlord.

“The site is located within a predominantly industrial area and is allocated in the local plan for employment use. It was formerly agas holder station, having remained vacant priortoredevelopment

work and the construction of the new units, which started in September 2022.

“Overall, the package of proposed changes is modest and will have alimited impact, whilst facilitating the occupation of the unit by Tesla.”

BUSINESS DOUBLES IN SIZE

Afamily-run manufacturing business has moved and doubled the size of its factory, following a£7.59 million investment from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Drywall Steel Sections, which has invested alongside the WMCA into the wider £13m scheme, has moved to anew 39,850 sq ft factory built on four-and-a-half acres of brownfield land in Ettingshall.

The firm was previously based in King Street, Cradley Heath for morethan 10 years but had outgrown the facility, which was also no longer fit for purpose for its modernproduction methods.

The factory manufactures light gauge steel framing for the construction industry (including modular housing), as well as steel products for wall partitions and ceilings. It also has an engineering department, DrySpec, which specialises in designing and detailing steel framing for avast range of buildings across the country

The WMCA’s investment has been used in part to cover the costs of dealing with several historic mineshafts on the site offSpring Road

and making it fit for redevelopment. The site had stood vacant since 2008 after luxury car maker Rolls Royce ceased using it.

The investment is the latest to be made by the WMCA as part of its nationally leading ‘brownfield first’ regeneration programme.

The total investment of the scheme also includes the construction of the G5 Industrial Park, acollection of 17 commercial starter units totalling 44,100 sq ft. These units areperfectly sized and located for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to move into. It is expected to be home to around 150 new jobs once occupied.

Andy Street, Mayor for the West Midlands, and chairman of the WMCA, said: “Now Drywall areintheir new factory Ican’twaitto see them continue to grow and prosper in the years ahead.”

Drywall Steel Sections is part of afamilyowned group of companies set up by Rajinder and Sunita Gupta morethan 20 years ago. Since joining the business six years ago, their son Mayank has taken over as the managing director and the firm is seeing new growth through fresh vigour

APPRENTICESHIPS –NOT FOR PLONKERS

TR AI NI NG

As Iwrite this, Iam awarethatitisthe start of National Apprenticeship Week, and alsothe start of anew series ofthe eponymously titled BBC television series “The Apprentice”, in which Sir Alan Sugar puts wannnabe CEOs through their paces in the quest to win aplace at his Board Table.

Theshow’semphasis on team working in the search for personal professional success is atimely reminder that every business is only as good as the group of people who make it up, and that whilst good management is a key component of awell-run organisation, so too arethe daily routine contributions of every worker

And those work habits of perseverance, graft, and dedication that amanager looks for in every employee arefrequently formed in the early parts of an individual’s career, often when they arean apprentice.

That’swhy apprenticeships areasimportant today as they were50and a100 years ago. As through an apprenticeship the next generation of nurses, electricians, and carpenters can witness firsthand the behaviours of their work

colleagues –who act as their role models.

The task of supporting an apprentice on the factory floor, out on the construction site or in the boardroom is avital one.

Of course, I’ve heardpeople moan about being “landed with the newbie”, but I’ve also heardmany moreembrace the opportunity to pass on their expertise and nurture someone who often reminds them of themselves 10 or 20 years ago.

And when you think about it some of the most enduring partnerships on British TV are apprentice and master.Think of Lewis and Morse, Geraldine Grainger –Vicar of Dibley and her curate Alice Tinker and the most enduring of all Del Boy and Rodney

In all of these pairings the relationship doesn’tjust run one way, itismutually beneficial, with the senior partner gaining from the new ways of thinking and energy of their apprentice.

Many of our national icons and successful celebrities aretestimony to the power of an apprenticeship too. Host of “Amazing Spaces,” George Clarke started his career as an architect with an apprenticeship at 16-yearsold. His apprenticeship gave him agreat kickstart to his architectureeducation and

career.Karen Brady CBE also started out as an apprentice for the marketing company Saatchi and Saatchi before becoming the youngest managing director of Birmingham City FC at just 23-years-old.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson, who is one of the most successful football managers in the sport’shistory, winning 13 Premiership titles in his 26 seasons managing Manchester United, credits his leadership skills to the time that he was aTrade Union leader and apprentice toolmaker at atypewriter factory in Glasgow

Youmight also argue that King Charles spent many years as an apprentice to his mother.Learningthe skills he needed and mirroring her example.

So, if you werethinking apprenticeships and apprentices wereathing of the past, think again.

It’sless about “you’refired,” and moreabout being fired up, as all of these examples demonstrate the power of apprenticeships to change lives, build business and shape futures.

VARLOWE’S BRAVE AND INSPIRING STORYOFGROWTH AND INVESTMENT

Company founder Steve Varden details how the engineering services company has succeeded over 21 years with an emphasis on being specialists in service

INTERVIEW 26

Afamily-run business in Wolverhampton has grown to employ 42 and deliver excellence in engineering services to customers that include JLR, BMW and JCB.

Varlowe Industrial Services’ story has been one of continual growth and investment since it started in 2003 –initially from a6ft by 4ft shed within another fabrication company’ssite.

Down-to-earth owner and director Steve Varden, aged 61, originally from Bentley, Willenhall, says that Varlowe’s success has been achieved without any major bank

support or outside finance.

2023 was abig year for Varlowe Industrial Services, based at two units at Patrick Gregory Road, Wednesfield, whose mission statement is “Specialists in Service”, as it marked its 20th anniversary It specialises in pipe work and overs the years has continually added new strings to its bow including steel fabrication, welding, CNC machining and electrical installation.

Steve, one of six children in his family, originally worked as amaintenance engineer, completing an apprenticeship at Cannon Industries in Coseley beforebecoming a

sub-contractor

“It took me up the age of 40 to get all the engineering knowledge and skills Ineeded through practical experience. Idid that by working

seven days aweek. Ilove engineering and seeing it done properly.I recognised there was an opportunity to create abusiness providing multiple industrial services under one umbrella. It was astruggle in the early days but we have prospered and grown,” he recalled.

The company moved from its initial home in Neachells Lane, Willenhall to a2,000 sq ft unit on the Reflex Industrial Estate in Park Road, Willenhall, and 10 years ago made the move to Patrick Gregory Road to a5,000 sq ft unit.

The steady growth of Varlowe meant is eventually

needed even morespace, including amachine shop, and the adjoining unit, which was virtually derelict, was bought when it became available just after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

During Covid Varlowe was able to refurbishthe premises ready for the boom that Steve envisaged would come after the pandemic with many competitors having gone out of business.

He was proved right with Varlowe finding new customers. Only recently Cadbury’shas been added.

Other customers include West Midland Safari Park, Drayton Manor and Alton Towers theme parks and many hospitals.

Steve is proud that Varlowe has been astandalone business that tried not to rely on anyone and has also invested heavily in training its workforce

“I like to bring the very best people in to the business like our managing director Andy Holdcoft and business development manager Mike Boylan who arekey people in

our team.

“It has all been about getting the right men and women,” explained Steve.

He says the key thing has been to look for the right engineers and pay them the right money

Varlowe also uses alot of sub-contractors for work like paint spraying and galvanizing and always looks to find quality from its outsourcing

The only disappointment for Steve has been alack of recognition from the wider business community for the achievements of the business over its 21 years.

The business, which works with steel of all types, has invested £3 million over three years in transforming its current headquarters in Patrick Gregory Road into a cutting-edge workspace that embodies innovation.

The main building includes the offices, afabrication shop, machine shop, CAD room and inspection room. The other unit directly opposite houses awarehouse and the stainless steel fabrication operation.

The CNC precision

machining department has grown from two to 10 machines and has ateamof skilled machinists.

Therehas alsobeen investment in 3D printing technology to help with its prototype development

Varlowe Industrial Servics uses awide range of Hurco milling and turning machines to produce high-quality components for its customers.

“Wedoa lot of digital marketing, but we turnalot of work down.

“Weget alot of enquiries about one-offjobs, but we arenot looking for single jobs but for customers that we can have arelationship with so that we aretheir one-stop shop for everything being done properly and to regulation,” said Steve.

The 20th anniversary saw acelebration evening of greyhound racing for the whole workforce held at nearby MonmoreGreen Stadium.

“Everyone says thereisa family feel to the company Some of our men have sons who arenow working here,”

said Steve’swifeRachel Varden. She and daughter Tami handle accounts for the business with another daughter Luci also part of the management team.

Rachel explained why a classic 1970s Chopper bike features in the boardroom.

“I hunted it down for Steve’s 60th birthday as asurprise because he loved his bike when he was young.

“His dad turned up with two Choppers for him and his brother.Heabsolutely loved it, but two weeks later avan turned up to take it away because the payments had not been kept up,” she said.

Steve’sambition is to see Varlowe Industrial Services continue to grow

He stressed: “Wewant to be the best in the business at what we do.

“Not the biggest –just the best.

“Even though we have been going for 21 years, I feel like we arequite anew company compared to some competitors.”

AWI’S MBO DELIVERS £17.9M IN ONE YEAR

Large export successes, security of supply and making every member of the business ashareholder have been just some of the highlights of arecordbreaking year for Alloy Wire International (AWI).

One of the UK’sleading manufacturers of round, flat and profile wirehas delivered £17.9 million of sales since the management buyout 12 months ago, anear£5m rise on the same period in 2022 and £3m above anticipated revenues.

The senior management team of TomMander(managing director), Adam Shaw (finance director) and Andrew Du Plessis (technical director) have put the expansion down to aresurgence in oil and gas and aerospace volumes returning post the pandemic, plus ongoing growth in automotive and new opportunities in research and development

and space exploration. They have also underlined the growing importance of AWI’scommitment to a400-tonne stockholding in material and its ability to supply a 60-strong range of exotic alloys in just three weeks.

“The last year has surpassed all of our expectations and capped atremendous twelve months since we completed the MBO,” explained Tom, who has worked in the business since July 2005.

“One of the first things we wanted to do when we took over was extend the employee ownership model to every member of staff, meaning all of our 33-strong workforce at the time became shareholders in the business.”

He continued: “This really set thescene and ensured everyone knew we wanted to take them on the journey with us and they have responded by producing arecord year of £17.9m sales.

“Therehas been strong

domestic growth, but that has been outstripped by demand from overseas, with AWImaterial now sent to morethan 65 different countries –often beating off competition from low-cost rivals.”

International trade is definitely the flavour of the month for Alloy WireInternational, which manufactures wirein60exotic alloys including Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy,Nimonic and Waspaloy

The company has just sealed its largest ever export order worth US $400,000, supplying aUnited States springmaker with ahigh strength nickel cobalt alloy.

The DFARS compliant material will be used in an aerospace application that requires heat and corrosion resistance, with the company chosen for its world class quality and the ability to process the order in just amatter of weeks.

It is these two qualities, along with asector-leading 400 tonne stockholding, that AWIwillbe

pushing in Germany when it looks to exhibit at Wire2024in Dusseldorf from April 15 to19.

On Stand E26 in Hall 11, AWI will be represented by stafffrom the UK and agents from Germany, Italy, and the US.

Andrew Du Plessis, technical director at Alloy WireInternational, concluded: “The US order really does typify what we areall about. We received the enquiry about two months ago, went back quickly with aquote, agreed the deal, and processed the large quantity and despatched it in amatter of weeks.

“Wire2024 gives us another opportunity to take our key selling points to aglobal audience and we’ve invested heavily in creating our biggest stand yet and anew timeline that charts some of the big moments in our 78-year history.”

NEW INTERCHANGE ON ITS WAY

Dudley Bus Station has closed for the construction of the new £24 million transport interchange for the town centre.

The bus station offFisher Street and Birmingham Street is being demolished.

National Express West Midlands says the bus station will be closed for around 18 months.

Whilst the redevelopment takes place, services using the bus station areusing temporary stops on TowerStreet, Ednam Road, Priory Road, New Street, Castle Street and The Broadway.Thereare timetable changes due to the stop changes.

The “out-of-date” bus station will be replaced with anew interchange offering a“modern, accessible environment” and “seamless connections” between bus and West Midlands Metroservices.

It comes after Dudley Council dropped a public inquiry into the compulsory purchase of land on Fisher Street in the town centrewhich would enable the local authority to bulldoze a branch of Farmfoods in order to build the new Interchange.

However,the council confirmed the inquiry

was dropped after every objection to the scheme was removed through negotiation.

As part of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metroextension, Transport for West Midlands hopes the interchange will better connect the people of Dudley to leisureand job opportunities across the region, as well as providing amoderngateway to the town for visitors.

Set to open in 2025, the interchange is one in aseriesofmajor regeneration projects which aretransforming Dudley town centre, including the Portersfield development.

It also follows recentdevelopments at the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre, Black Country Living Museum, and the Black Country and Marches Institute of Technology

The project is being led by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), which is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), in partnership with Dudley Council.

Funding for the interchange was awarded to the WMCA by the Department for Transport via the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

The work is being carried out alongside the development of phase one of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metroextension.

BOOST FOR CITY’S NIGHT LIFE

A£6million ‘box space’ could help efforts to attract morenight time visitors to Wolverhampton.

City of Wolverhampton Council recently submitted aplanning application for the food, entertainment and events venue in the west of the city centre. The proposals follow the demolition of derelict shops at 1-7a Cleveland Street last year and design work for the venue, which it is hoped will attract tens of thousands of visitors to the city centreevery year

It would be constructed on the cleared site and car park sitting between Cleveland Street and Bell Street and land from the proposed demolition of the vacant Neville Garratt Centre.

The working title for the venue is Bell Works, which provides anod to the Victorian ironmonger and manufacturer that existed in this area of the city centreinWolverhampton’s industrial past.

The development would also provide new and improved public car parking, with the entertainment venue offering food and drink vendors an exciting and different trading opportunity under one roof, the council says.

It would be funded through acombination of

the government’sFuture High Streets Fund and council investment, the venue will be the next phase of a£22 million package of investment in the west of the city centreand follows extensive public realmimprovement works to the Victoria Street andNorth Street areas.

Council bosses say it is all part of a transformation, creating new destinations, better public spaces and inner-city living opportunities.

It will also support the new-look Halls Wolverhampton in developing aburgeoning evening economy that is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city centreeachyear

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Wolverhampton Council’scabinet member for visitor city, said: “Subject to approval, we will deliver amodernfood, beverage and entertainment city centrefacility that will boost footfall and create invaluable employment and business opportunities.

“These type of spaces arehugely popular in other areas of the country such as Newcastle, London and Sheffield and will be asuperb addition.”

GROWTH ZONES AIDING REVIVAL

The West Midlands is to get three new ‘Growth Zones’ which will generate £1.7 billion for regeneration, create 60,000 jobs and deliver 4,500 new homes.

The zones, which include areas of Dudley,Walsall and Sandwell, will give the local authority the power to retain 100 per cent of business rates collected over the next 25 years, and ring-fence them for investment into regeneration projects.

It is the first scheme of its kind in the country

The scheme forms part of the Deeper Devolved Deal, agreed between the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Government.

The Dudley and Sandwell zone takes in Brierley Hill, Pensnett and Dudley town centre, extending

over the borough boundary into Tipton.

The Walsall zone will cover a corridor from Iron Park at Moxley, up to Junction 10 of the M6, where it meets the Black Country Route.

Athirdzone will straddle east Birmingham and northernSolihull.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said the deal was avoteof confidence in the region, and he expected to see tangible benefits to the areas.

He said the money could be used to incentivise the owners of run-down properties to bring them back into use.

The three new zones complement the Investment Zone, announced in the Chancellor’s autumn statement, which will see millions of pounds pumped into sites in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry and Warwick.

The 15-acresite offBrook Street will feature15industrial and distribution units offering 166,500 sq ft of accommodation to suit a variety of uses.

The WMCA boardhas now agreed, in principle, to make a multi-million pound investment to help kick-start the project which is being built by Oldbury-based Goold Estates and is part of the wider Bilston Urban Village redevelopment scheme.

It will be the latest in aseries of WMCA investments using money it has secured from the Government to provide new homes, jobs and

commercial spaces on urban brownfield sites, helping to drive economic growth while reducing pressuretobuild in the green belt.

The board’sdecisionwill now trigger detailed negotiations between the WMCA and the developer to finalise an investment deal.
